There was a question in the comments yesterday about the frequency of the excremental disasters at my place of employment and I thought it was a great question because all afternoon it was the topic of discussion. The consensus was that our previous perpetrator was fired from the company about six months ago. I had no idea but there were four open investigations running into the same number of questionable hygienic events. One he even covertly confessed to in open conversation shortly before his dismissal.

One of the other problems in the back bathroom was claimed by one of the filthiest humans that I have ever employed. This guy serves a necessary evil because he will jump right in to a hole (remember this particular department fixed broken waste pipes) that scares even my toughest veterans. Because of that function we forgive some of his eccentricities where hygiene is concerned.

I think I told the story before of his desperate need to relieve himself while at a customer’s house. On the off chance that I didn’t I’ll sum up. Rather than kill a customers washroom he chose to dump in the back of his van in a bucket. The problem was that he forgot that his door was broken and he left his radio out by the hole. So he was locked in the back of a van with a steaming bucket of his own fun and no one knew he was trapped until the customer called the office wondering where he went. The guy that let him out said that the smell was so bad he rubbed hand sanitizer in his nostrils to try and make it go away.

As for the horror show of the other day the group having the discussion came to the same prime suspect that I had and he still had not showed back up for work. We have a new department that started a couple of months ago and he is one of its newest employees. They seem to think that he will not return. So to answer the question and hopefully end the toilet talk for a while yes it does seem like we get more than our share of washroom accidents but no one can put there finger on why nor would they want to.

I walked into the regular bathroom stall to grab some toilet paper with which to blow my nose and wa

I walked into the regular bathroom stall to grab some toilet paper with which to blow my nose and was an unintentional witness to a complete shitzaster. Now when I say regular bathroom it means the one up front where all of the normal office working type folks are supposed to go. Not the bathrooms in the back of the shop where the guys that dig around in the pipes that carry the bad stuff away from peoples homes relieve themselves. Even stepping in to those facilities is risky because there are better than even odds that the stuff on the floor is just as nasty as anything you would find inside of the bowl. So to be clear I was supposed to be entering the safe environment.

Also, when I said I was going in to the stall for some nose blow that was not code for anything. I am not afraid of or opposed to defecating at work. In fact, I go when I need to go but my body is pretty accommodating and usually only calls when it works out for me. I used to be a big fan of going at work when the magic seat was functioning and uncontaminated but a major security breach caused me to shut down the magic toilet project and that is now a permanent no fly zone. But as usual I am digressing.

I opened the stall door and didn’t get one step in before I froze. It is a natural defense move to glance at the toilet of any stall you enter. One never knows what surprises have been left by the previous occupant. There are a couple of stories floating around our neighborhood about child destroyed bathrooms that included parents leaving the horror shows for the homeowners and those always bothered me but I never thought I’d witness the likes in my own office.

The seat is broken at one of the bolts and hanging off one side. The wide tread skid marks indicate that the perpetrator slid off of the mug and actually finished up some of the business on the floor. I’m not sure if the swirl marks were an attempt at cleaning up or a misplaced support appendage in the scramble to not get caught on the floor of the stall covered in excrement. I jumped back out as if the stall contained a nest of rattlesnakes and immediately started asking my managers who they were maddest at this morning.

Cleanup is under way and the office will soon be buzzing with the news. It wont even take my CSI skills to solve this one because once I stop dry heaving I’m just going to go out and find out who left early or went home to change clothes. They might be injured as well because we have those bar stool height handicapped toilets everywhere and that is a bruising distance to dead drop from. I have no idea where I’m going with this. I feel a little sick and am typing this in an effort to wipe the memory off. (No pun initially intended but I made myself smile.) At least I’m not tired anymore. Have a craptastic day.

July 2008

In our last Newsletter we told you about the consultation process the Environment Agency was about to undertake. They have produced a strategy document, ‘Planning for the Future’. DOC has welcomed the consultation process and this document in principle. We are grateful to Nigel Stafford-Clark for writing DOC’s official response, which is attached to this newsletter. A copy of our response is being sent to both Members of Parliament representing the Marsh, The Rt. Hon. Michael Howard QC, MP for Folkestone & Hythe, and Michael Foster DL, MP for Hastings & Rye. Both MPs have already written in support of the DOC objectives.

If you haven't received a copy of the document, please contact us as soon as possible and we will arrange for a copy to be sent to you. It is vital that as many individuals as possible make their own response using the forms provided, before the consultation ends on 15th August. Following the completion of the consultation, we are to arrange an open meeting for all DOC members with senior officers from the Environment Agency. The provisional date for that meeting is Friday 26th September 2008 at the Guild Hall in Lydd, so please make a note in your diary now! Further details to follow shortly.

Our PR and Media Officer has been extremely active in enthusiastically promoting DOC. You may have seen Brigitte on BBC Television South East Today.

The next local events for us to promote DOC are coming ever nearer (The Summer Fete in Camber on 9th August and The Day of Syn in Dymchurch on 25th August). It is vital that we are seen to be present and active at these events. Volunteers are needed to run the stand, please let us know if you are able to help. As there are no funds available yet to purchase our own display panels, Brigitte has managed to loan some panels from Camber.

We are also planning a website to promote DOC, which is being set up free of charge by Jim Whiteside of the CCAG. Tony Hills our Technical Officer has already designed some material for the site, which will be a great asset to our campaign. Let us hope that in the next newsletter we will be able to report it being up and running. Many thanks to Tony and Jim Whiteside for making this happen.

We have come a long way in a very short time since we started DOC, and have become recognised as a serious pressure group for the Marsh and its coastal defence issues. The Environment Agency is listening to us and so are the media - let us continue to keep the momentum going. There really is no time for complacency! Welcome news is that a number of local companies have promised us financial assistance, and our membership drive continues. The more members we have the more outreach we can achieve and the more effective we will become.

We would like to thank David Alford, the first Chairman of DOC, Chris Albrow, and our Minutes Secretary Mrs. Margaret Weaver for the considerable contribution they have made while serving on our Management Committee, particularly for all their help with the launch of DOC. We wish them all well in their future work and commitments. Terry Preston has been elected Chairman until the next AGM.

If you know of any one who would like to serve on the Management Committee, please let us know. Meetings are held in the function room above Camber Castle Public House. We are grateful to John Parker for his generosity in allowing us to use his facilities free of charge.

If there are any matters you would like to discuss or information from DOC you would like, please contact our PR & Press Officer, Brigitte Bass, Tel: 01797 225255 or email: doc.romneymarsh@ yahoo.co.uk. For donations, subscriptions or membership issues please contact our Treasury Secretary, David Donohoe, Tel: 01797 320714 or email: doc.members@hotmail.co.uk.

I'll never see her again. I have no way of contacting her. And she's probably happy about both of those facts. And you know what? I can't even cry about it. I'm trying. I can't. I can't even feel sad about it, I just regret it, like I lost a Rook or something. I don't even know if she's alive...and it wouldn't even make a difference to me if she was dead. That's how bad this is getting. I have nothing left to feel. I'm not going to bother denying it anymore...yes, Moose, and Celery, it was THAT girl. Please don't use her name, because that would be mean, and you don't want to succomb to my level, do you? From now on, I'm restricting all conversation about HER to this post and below. I'm done blogging about her...I want to blog about me, if there's anything left to blog about.

God DAMN! Speaking of which, could you please make up your mind already, God? Am I supposed to be happy again, or am I supposed to go through life as a living corpse? Oh, right, you're probably too busy ruining her life, too. GOD forbid one of us is happy.

One of the things about living abroad is that you get exposed to new music. I'm a big fan of the seemingly extinct genre that my friends call "Booty Music" — Quad City DJs, 12 Gauge, etc. One day I was watching Viva and saw this music video:

For over a year I tried to find this album with no success. Now it's on YouTube and I can buy the track from Napster for $0.99. I love the Internet.

(If you're interested in more German rap / hip hop, I highly recommend Deichkind and DJ Tomekk)

I was a little side tracked yesterday but I need to spit out my original thoughts. I really am in the middle of a little Olympic fever. Every night when the boy and I get back from football the Olympics are on the telly and I end up watching or listening long past my bed time. Sometimes it’s because I’m interested in the competition and sometimes it’s the freak show.

I love the little girl too ugly to sing story and the coach stabbed to death while sightseeing. OK I don’t love the stabbed to death part but after the guy finishes cutting up the couple he “jumped” to his death. I’d bet some of the fear goes out of your jump once the bullet enters your brain and the soldiers help you up and over the rail. It also turns out that this guy was homeless and crazy so the attack was completely random and there’s no one to talk with about a possible motivation. The news even said that the victims weren’t wearing anything that identified them as Americans. I immediately thought other than their skin and speaking English while following a tour guide dressed in fancy go to China cloths. It’s not just the side stories but some of the sports that I don’t normally care about.

Take the whole gymnastics thing. Now I am as big a fan of the great movie Gymkata as anyone but aside from that brilliant made up martial art I really don’t get gymnastics. But for some reason I got all caught up in the woman’s team controversy thing. Clearly those Chinese girls are young. I think the one is missing a baby tooth. And I didn’t really understand why that would be an advantage until I watched that stupid floor exercise nonsense. When you get older you develop more body mass and power which makes staying in the giant square harder. Not those Chinese kids. They fly around doing amazing tricks and are always shy of the lines. YIKES! ALL STOP! Sportsstupidtom is beginning to bore himself. Sorry about that, I’ll try to figure out how to get back on an interesting track.

So, just as I’m beginning to get pissed about the Chinese cheating, Bella Caroli comes on my team and starts bitching about the issue but he has the voice of Count Chocula. I had no idea that the US coaching husband and wife were from Transylvania. As soon as he started bitching I wanted unnaturally black haired Bob Costas to drive a stake through his chest. And his wife isn’t fooling me for a second with that fake tan. If it talks like a vampire…

Once again I’ve used up all of my time. I’ll try to sum up tomorrow but that could be tough as I am attending a bar’s golf outing with a foursome of Olympic class beer consumers.

The fair is in town, has been for almost a week now. For you, the fair probably reminds you of food, animals, and rides. For me, it reminds me of my two children. Why? There is a little running joke in my family that my wife gets pregnant around the fair, every other year. It's actually true! Lucky for us, this is one of our "off" years, which is nice! It means next summer we won't be having restless nights with a little one in our room.

Now we have a two year old, and that is going to be my joy this year. I hope that he can have a good time. He's excited to race the "race cars", however, we'll see if he actually gets on the rides. This is the best part of being a parent for me. The ability to take joy in my kids joy is so much fun, and is so awesome. So I hope it works out for all of us, but mostly for him.

So what do you enjoy about the fair? Is it the rides? Food? Beer Garden?

SMA America Launches www.Solar-is-Future.com

Last update: 12:00 p.m. EDT Aug. 13, 2008

ROCKLIN, Calif., Aug 13, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SMA America, Inc., the United States division of global solar technology giant SMA Solar Technology AG, has launched www.Solar-is-Future.com. This user-friendly, educational Web site explains how solar energy can be harvested and utilized via animation, illustrations and descriptions in easy-to-understand language. At Solar-is-Future.com, visitors can research the benefits of solar power and how the sun's abundant, clean energy can be collected through active and passive solar power systems.

"SMA America is very excited about the launch of Solar-is-Future.com," says Jurgen Krehnke, president and general manager of SMA America. "Now there is a one-stop, online solar resource where visitors can learn everything there is to know about solar energy and solar power systems."

In addition to various illustrations explaining solar radiation, solar power systems and solar thermal energy, Solar-is-Future.com features an animated grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system, which comprises the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. solar market. The animation clearly shows how PV system components are connected and examples of where the components would be installed in a residential system. Basic components include a solar array, inverter and meter. By clicking on a component, a box appears that explains the component and its function.

Elsewhere on the Solar-is-Future site is a Solar Power Professional Search where visitors can locate solar power system installers by zip code. There is also an extensive Frequently Asked Questions section that covers common concerns such as whether a building permit is required when installing a solar power system. The site's comprehensive glossary defines the solar power industry's most-used terms, including alternating current, grid-connected system and kilowatt hour.

About SMA America, Inc.
SMA America, Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, based in Germany. With over three gigawatts installed, SMA is the world leader in solar inverter technology and manufacturing, and has divisions in nine countries on four continents.

Upon further review this is a reoccurring condition for me ever since college where we would make up drinking games for most of the events. They were usually centered around the announcers and the buzz words they used for each particular event so I think you get the picture. My favorite college memory was sitting packed in the living room of the shithole house we rented surrounded by friends save one. This guy was trying to date one of my housemates (I had mostly female housemates not that there would be anything wrong…)

Well, trying to date would be putting it mildly. He was attempting to woo her. For two weeks prior to the night in question he stopped by every day with a note, picture, trinket, or combination thereof. Most of them were hand made and I’m sure very sweet and touching if they would have made it to their intended target unobserved. But he kept making the fatal mistake of delivering them to anyone that answered the door.

Most door answering was done by myself or whichever one of my friends was located on the broken loveseat that could reach the knob. As soon as he would leave the prize would be opened and the fun would begin. In our or my defense I did repeatedly ask him if he just wanted to put it in her room herself but he always declined. I think he was one of those guys who didn’t want to disturb the sanctity of his future beloved’s bedroom. This worked out for me because I would have had to make a quick preliminary sweep of the room to make sure that all feminine fun was at least shoved in a drawer including her Chlamydia medication but I digress.

So now we are back to the night I was talking about earlier. A dozen people or so were crammed into our living room watching the winter Olympics on our monstrous twenty five inch console TV. This guy and my housemate who shall remain nameless because I mentioned one of her STD’s (oops, further defamation of her character by implying more than one. Or did I infer? Oh well, back to the story)

So they are huddled together on the floor next to the coffee table because they came in late from their date. This is important because everyone else in the room was seated around them stadium style in a horseshoe watching the TV. So the speed skaters are up and that particular year there happened to be an Olympian that graduated high school with me. A nice guy but as you can imagine no one really knew him because it turned out that he was getting ready to be in the Olympics some day while I was wasting my life chasing girls and parties.

One of my dear sensitive friends yells out to me that my boyfriend is on TV because I was in the kitchen getting my girlfriend who would later become my first wife something to drink. When I get back they are telling him that the guy and I went to school together and dated. I was then forced to correct their telling and then it was time for the race. The race goes and the guy I know wipes out which was tragic because he worked hard to get there only to fall but it happens a lot when you are trying to go really fast in tight ovals on ice. In one of those rare cut to commercial before computers moments the room was completely silent except for the choked sobs of my housemates date. As I said before we were sitting around them stadium style and I’m not sure but I think as we all glanced frantically around the room to make sure everyone was paying attention to the new show we shared one thought. And then one of my friends said it out loud. “What the fuck is that?!”

When he realized that he was the only one in the room who was crying he got up from the floor and ran out of the house. Unfortunately I don’t think it was fast enough to miss the roar of laughter that erupted. We didn’t see much of him after that night. weird.

39. Some suggest that interest groups provide better representation for their constituents than do members of Congress because (Points: 2)
members of Congress are pressured by many groups and opinions; interest groups are more focused.
most interest groups represent a wider range of opinions and needs than do members of Congress.
interest group representatives are more honest and conscientious than members of Congress.
citizens are more informed about interest group activity than about congressional action.

40. The ability of an interest group to educate policymakers depends in large part upon its ability to (Points: 2)
too many free riders in an interest group will hamper its lobbying efforts.

44. One advantage labor unions have in maintaining their membership is that (Points: 2)
some states require workers to affiliate with the union that bargains with their employer.
they can offer to pay workers directly.
union members are motivated by ideological concerns that do not change.
unions do lot lobby, so workers are unlikely to be offended by political disagreements.

45. A major drawback with relying upon direct mail to attract members is that (Points: 2)
it is illegal.
it has a low rate of return.
it violates tax regulations for nonprofit groups.
addresses for potential members are not available.

46. ________ frequently lobby for corporations that do not have their own Washington offices. (Points: 2)

47. If you were the administrator of a typical corporate political action committee (PAC), you would be most likely to contribute campaign funds to (Points: 2)
any candidate, whether challenger or incumbent, as long as he or she shares your ideology.

48. The main drawback of protest activity as a tool for influencing the policymaking process is that (Points: 2)
it is basically a short-term tool, but policymaking is a long-term process.
it almost always generates more opposition than support.
no one pays attention to protest.
it is illegal.

49. If lobbyists from six pro-life organizations began meeting together to develop a joint lobbying strategy, it would be an example of (Points: 2)
legal advocacy.
direct lobbying.
coalition building.
grassroots lobbying.

50. The authors conclude that business has a privileged position in Washington because (Points: 2)
it dominates the news media.
roughly two-thirds of all organizations lobbying Congress are business related.
business is seldom divided.
business lobbyists do not lobby against each other.

Received an iPod Shuffle as a gift the other day. My first thought was to regift it but the usual recipients of my unwanted junk probably wouldn't want it any more than I did.

Then it occured to me that the Shuffle is perfect for a motorcycle. It cost me nothing and is cheap to replace so losing or breaking it is of little concern. The risk of losing it is actually pretty low — if it falls it will probably stay attached to the cord. It's vibration-proof. And best of all, with no screen to look at there is nothing to take my eyes off of the road.

So I began my quest to get sound into my helmet without buying anything. Apple's earbuds don't like to stay in my ears, which leads to painful helmet removal. My fancy Shure headphones stay in but they are so effective at blocking outside sounds that they shouldn't be used while walking, much less driving. Ripping apart a set of over-the-ear headphones and putting the speakers in my helmet's liner seemed like the best bet. The first pair I tried had speakers far too thick for comfort but the second set was just about perfect. Not quite loud enough for the most comfortable behind-the-ears position, but against my ears they are reasonably comfortable and just loud enough for highway driving.
