Concurso de Procrastinación

Kurioso tiene el placer de convocar el primer “Concurso de Procrastinación” en la blogocosa hispana.

“..Es esa enfermedad que sirve a diario a casi el 100% de la humanidad geek. La cosa es más o menos así: estoy aburrido, voy a rediseñar mi página, ahora voy a traducir un libro, ahora, no, mejor ahora hago un programita que me baje de Internet todas las letras de Death Metal a mi disco duro en un formato XM… ahora, mejor me compro estos siete libros para aprender “whatever 5.4″ y los pongo sobre la montaña que está junto al televisor, ahí junto a los 7 DVDs que no he visto. Un algo así como: ¡ponte a hacer una cosa nueva, no te preocupes por las otras trescientas también nuevas que te tienen estresado!”.. (Microsiervos)

Kurioso lleva tiempo pensando en ello, dándole vueltas mientras procrastina. Hoy he decidido, después de menear un poquito, visitar Fogonazos y ordenar la collección de pelusas de ombligo por colores, poner en marcha el asunto, aunque con espasmos neuronales y las ideas escarchadas. Tengo claro que para procrastinar es necesario tener la obligación, motivación o acicate del proyecto por el que se procrastina; por ello me tengo que comprometer en ofrecer un premio interesante y al mismo tiempo un castigo pseudo-intimidador por incumplimiento de bases.

Lo primero es fácil, el reciclaje geek me permite disponer de algún aparato infrautilizados dispuesto a aterrizar en el mejor procrastinador hispano. Entre ellos un Macmini (Core Duo 512mb 60gb) y una ‘Internet tablet’ nokia n-800. (Portes pagados Península y Baleares)

Para lo segundo, más complicado, propongo vuestro consentimiento para manipular despiadadamente y publicar en este blog el retrato personal que deberá ser enviado en el email de suscripción.

El concurso consistirá en diseñar, escribir, dibujar o manipular alguna gilipollez kuriosa e intrascendente (original, por supuesto, propuesta en los comentarios de este post y siempre bajo el tamiz del humor) después de un proceso de procrastinación personal que hay que detallar cuidadosamente. Se valorará el equilibrio y las conexiones entre el resultado final de la prueba y el proceso procristinativo que condujo a ella (mediante video, texto o imagen, pudiendo ir toda la obra junta o separada). El ingenio, la ocurrencia e ironía, el diseño y el lenguaje, etc… serán pautas de valoración y el tiempo, evidentemente, será un factor importante y limitado, valorando quien entregue más cerca del plazo final su propuesta. (Ojo¡ sin pasarse)

Para lanzar el concurso necesito un mínimo de 20 inscripciones (y participaciones). Cada participante dispondrá de un tiempo determinado (se le avisará por mail), sus plazos de entrega y su prueba personalizada. Conforme se reciban las propuestas se irán publicando (las mejores) en este post. Al final del plazo general se seleccionarán las dos ganadoras.

¿Te animas?.. Escribe una propuesta de tema o diseño y mándame un email, sin nombre ni datos personales (basta un nick), con una foto de cara (max 200k) y ‘Concurso Kurioso’ en el Subjet, con ello te enviamos un código de participación… kuriosoblog(arroba)gmail.com. El concursante que no entregue nada en el plazo previsto acepta que podamos desvariar con su foto y la publiquemos en escarnio público. Para evitar mandar fotos ajenas, el ganador y el finalista deberán demostrar para recibir el premio que la foto enviada es la suya.

En cuanto reunamos un mínimo de inscritos y anuncie el/los temas definitivos comenzaremos a mandar emails con los plazos.

El resto deja que me lo piense un poquito mientras estudio el efecto de la gravedad y me doy unas sacudidas

N800: Como montar un cable Usbhost

Todos aquellos que hayan actualizado a OS 2008 tienen una nueva característica que pueden aprovechar del N800 ( nueva no es, se podia hacer con el anterior OS pero era un poco más engorroso).

Se trata de usbhost en el puerto del que dispone el susodicho aparato. Este puerto por defecto y sin realizar ninguna modificación funciona como "usb on the go" o haciendo funcionar el N800 como periférico.

Voy a explicar como hacer que el N800 acepte periféricos usb, como por ejemplo teclados, cámaras, discos de almacenamiento, hubs usb, usb-ethernet, usb-wifi...

Para ello solo tendréis que montaros un cable y puentear el conector usb del aparato. Comencemos:

El cable:

Necesitaremos:

Un cable de la PSP ( si, has leido bien ). Este cable es un cable que cuesta sobre unos 6€ que se utiliza en la psp para recargar al mismo tiempo que la tienes conectada como periférico al pc. Este cable es idoneo para el N800 ya que tiene todo el cableado necesario para montarse un cable completo.

Dos conectores hembra usb ( yo los he sacado de dos conectores ps2/usb ).

También podéis comprar un adaptador mini-A macho <==> tipo-A hembra y asi evitaros la ardua faena de soldar. Este adaptador es válido, aunque estaréis limitados a la alimentación que os puede proporcionar el N800 que son 100mA ( lo justo para que os funcionen algunos teclados, cámaras y lapices usb ).

El cable que tengo montado puede obtener alimentación de por ejemplo un pc o un adaptador de corriente y conectar mediante un hub todos los dispositivos que se requieran.

Lo único que tenéis que hacer es soldar la parte del cable usb a un usb-hembra y la parte del conector de alimentación a otro, siguiendo el esquema usb.

Ahora solo teneis que compraros un estuche barato de adaptadores usb y a disfrutar .

El Puente:

Necesitaremos:

Un hilo de cobre de un cable.

Para que el N800 entre en usbhost hay que puentear los pins 4 y 5 del conector con un hilo de cobre o bien hacer la modificación al cable que utilizareis para conectar los periféricos.

Y con esto queda todo dicho, no hace falta hacer nada mas, conectáis y os detecta o monta el periférico/s que le metáis. El kernel de base no tiene todos los módulos y programas necesarios para hacer funcionar muchos dispositivos, si los necesitarais, hay gente que han compilado algunos de ellos; nada que no podáis solucionar con una búsqueda rápida en google.

Advertencia: No conectéis entradas de corriente en los dos usb a la vez, porque no se como le pueden llegar a sentar 10V frescos al N800, bien seguro que no!!.

I found that the pre-configured settings for Singapore's StarHub mobile operator on my Nokia n800 did not work when trying to connect my tablet to my Sony Ericsson (Z800) 3G phone for internet access. After a bit of poking around I got it to work. Here are my settings:

Connection name: StarHub internet
Connection type: Packet data
Access point name: shwapint
Dial-up number: *99***4#
Username: <leave blank>
Password: <leave blank>

I did not adjust any of the 'Advanced' settings.

Com uma tela widescreen de 800 x 480 pixels, o Nokia N800 já rouba de cara a atenção. Mesmo não possuindo câmera de resulução comparável aos seus concorrentes(possui camêra VGA), o aparelho da fabricante finlandesa não deixa a desejar à nenhum iPhone ou LG Prada nos outros recursos.

No requisito conectividade, o wi-fi, gprs, bluetooth e IrDA (infra-vermelhos) marcam presença. Com 128 MB de memória RAM, 256 MB de memória Flash-ROM, USB 2.0, 2GB de memória interna, GPS, além de suportar os formatos de vídeo: 3GP, AVI, WMV, MP4, H.263, H.264, MPEG-1, MPEG-4 e RV (RealVideo); os de áudio: MP3, VMA, AAC, AMR, AWB, M4A, MP2, RA (RealAudio) e WAV; e os de imagem: BMP, GIF, ICO, JPE, JPEG, PNG, TIF/TIFF, SVG, Tiny e WBMP. É possível configurar contas de e-mail em IMAP, STMP e POP3. Ainda por cima, quem quiser receber suas assinaturas de RSS pode contar com os formatos RSS 1.0/2.0 e Atom 1.0. Image from WikipediaNokia's WiMAX-enabled N810 Internet Tablet has surfaced at CTIA 2008, and yep, this critter is destined to go on sale in the US of A this summer. Beyond that, you'll notice the familiar 4.13-inch touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and even a built-in webcam for video calls, Mozilla-powered browser, integrated GPS / media player, 2GB of internal memory and a microSD expansion slot. Heck, Nokia even touts this thing's ability to "access the Internet over WiFi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology." Also announced today is the freshly updated OS2008, which includes an enhanced e-mail client, support for Chinese character rendering in the browser and RSS feeds and "Seamless Software Update functionality" to boot. Where should I begin? What I think an mp3 player should have? Problems I've had with music players in the past? What I think get's the best BPB [Bang Per Buck] rating? Eh, I don't know, so I'll just start typing whatever comes to mind.

Over the last few months, I've been researching music players quite a bit. My main conclusion is this: The mp3 player age is nearly over! Terminated! Discontinued! Ceased! No more! Finito!

"But... mp3 players are bigger than ever,"you say. Frankly, I don't see much truth in that. Not because music is going to loose popularity [it's growing faster than ever], but because what we know as mp3 players don't just play music anymore. They hold pictures, video, games, internet, and, you guessed it, personal style. Think about it. The most commonly heard mp3 player, the iPod, has gone far past music. At this point, the only version that doesn't play video is the shuffle! The Creative Zen plays videos. The SanDisk Sansa is rarely seen without a 16-bit video/picture displaying LCD. The Zune is made for visual delight. Cell phones are becoming portable media players that become phones. With that said, I shall restate my early-stated conclusion: the mp3 player age is almost over!

From this point on, you shan't hear me use the term mp3 player, but I'll be referring to them as "media players".

Let's start with the brand I like to rant about the most- Apple. I dislike the way their media player became so popular that iPod became a regular word. I've seen people actually witnessed people call a SanDisk a "black iPod". Foey! Electronic devices shouldn't be improper nouns! It's blasphemy, I tell ya'!
Let's talk about the actual media player, shall we? To begin, I'd like to say that the iPod is way overrated, and just like most of the things Apple makes, overpriced. I'm not paying $150+ for a 4GB media player no matter how small! As long as it fits in my jeans' pockets (which is most media players), I'm good. Now there is one reasonably priced iPod that I wouldn't mind buying, however. The 160GB iPod Classic, $300 if you search in the right place. Holds more junk than you'll ever need (unless you put all your HD movies in there). Other than that, overpriced and overrated. The iPod touch is way too small space-wise. That would be alright with me if it had an SD expansion slot, but no such luck. 30GB is my usual standard for space, and 16GB for $350 just doesn't cut it for me, though [as painful as it is for me to say,] it is undeniable that the iPod touch's UI is pretty well thought-out. Maybe I'll get a touch when the new 32GB gets down to $300 and there are at least 30 decent widgets [with the help of the iPhone/touch SDK]. Maybe.

So what do I like? The Zune. The Zune 30GB to be specific. How would you like a media player that stores 30GB for under $200? Microsoft has that. Wanna know who else does that? Nobody. Yeah, the company that often gets blamed for overpriced electronics fires back! As for the Zune 4GB and 8GB, I'm not too excited. I know it's small, has the same screen resolution, and costs a tad less, but still, you can get much more BPB with a little searching. And as for the 80GB Zune: heh, neat. I like the touch interface (the 4/8GB has the same, BTW) and the fact that it packs 80 gigs into a small, sexy package, but for $250 [and no SD slot], I'm not buying just yet. I think it'll be down to $200 by the holidays.

I'd like to make a final "notable mensions" paragraph, but unfortunately, I can't find more than two worth mensioning. There's the $130 SanDisk Sansa 8GB that has an SD slot, and the all holy (but non-relevant to the subject) Nokia N800 with a touch screen, stereo speakers, handwriting recognition, wifi, SD, Skype, Mozilla, Widgets, remote computing to a PC, a very nice interface, and a Linux-Based OS, but it's made to be a cell phone, and deserves to be in a blog post by itself. Yes, that was a run-on sentence, but it's hard to refrain from doing so when trying to describe the N800 :P

So for all of you screaming "I know better media players than that!," then let me know in the comments box. I'll read it, don't worry. I read all my comments for the most part.

Bluetooth PAN su maemo

Finalmente anche su Maemo è possibile attivare e utilizzare nativamente il Bluetooth PAN per interagire con gli smartphone windows mobile. Il Plugin da utilizzare è maemo-pan add-on (che è compatibile per ora solo con OS2008). E con pochi passi spiega Martin Grimme è possibile utilizzarlo :

Go to the system preferences and add your phone in the phone settings. Do not enter the wizard for configuring the dialup settings. PAN does not use them.
Start internet sharing on your phone. It depends on your phone how and where to do this. On Windows Mobile 5, open the Start menu and select "internet connection sharing" from there.
Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your internet tablet. Now open the connection dialog and you will see that there is a new connection called "Bluetooth-PAN". Select it and you will be connected to the internet via PAN.
When you're finished, just close the connection the usual way. Wasn't this easy? :)

Maemo Eclipse Integration v0.9 (Beta)

Maemo ha annunciato con grande soddisfazione di aver rilasciato la prima beta release dei plugin di maemo per eclipse. Un altro passo in avanti nell'integrazione di maemo e della sua piattaforma nel noto IDE di sviluppo openSource. Questa release è stata rilasciata dice maemo per consentire alla community di testare il software creato a avere dei consigli e delle correzioni da parte degli utenti prima di rilasciare la versione finale 1.0

Next version (planned to be released on March) will include more functionality to enable, for example, disk mounts between Internet Tablet and PC.

Maemo ESBox plugin for Eclipse IDE integrates maemo SDK Scratchbox based development environment to the Eclipse development environment. ESBox plugin supports application developers using C, C++ or Python programming language. Developers are able to do all their development work inside Eclipse, from starting the project using template to packaging final application into maemo installation package.

Maemo ESBox plugin can be installed from ESBox project home page from maemo garage using standard Eclipse plugin installation.

3. maemo Pluthon plugin for Eclipse IDE v0.1.7 (Beta)

Maemo Pluthon plugin for Eclipse IDE integrates Eclipse IDE development environment to the Internet Tablet so that maemo Python developers do not need to use maemo SDK and Scratchbox as development environment. Maemo Pluthon plugin fully supports application development process with Python where developer develops and tests his Python application directly with Internet Tablet.

Maemo Pluthon plugin can be installed from Pluthon project home page from maemo garage using standard Eclipse plugin installation.

Nokia n830 successore del Nokia n810 ?

Sarà questa la prima foto del prossimo internet tablet nokia n830 successore del nokia n810? Esteticamente sembra immutato solo la tastiera sembra di colorazione scura. Come caratteristiche però si avrà sicuramente qualche differenza a partire dal WiMax che tutti attendono. Attendiamo comunque notizie ufficiali da nokia.

Informo tutti i possessori di Nokia n810 e n800 che è stata rilasciata la nuova versione del software maemo OS 2008 2.2007.51-3
Chi volesse effettuare l'aggionamento può procedere :

- da windows potete usare il wizard grafico Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard

- da Linux e da MacOSX invece bisogna utilizzare i flasher in dotazione nel repository dei firmware adatti al nostro sistema operativo.

Today marks progress in a number of ways. The first is finally completing my review yesterday of the Nokia N800, which I used for a two week trial. The review took a lot longer to write than I thought it would - I've not gone into as much detail as I wanted, as it would have taken me 'til Easter or longer to complete it :)

Next on the list is the progress with my BT problems. I received my refund cheque through the post yesterday morning (three days early, which makes a nice change). It took a lot of pointless and cut-off phone calls to get there, but I finally have my money back. I've probably said this before, but now both my direct debits to BT are cancelled and my money will stay with me, until I decide to pay my bills. Fair enough If they were going to tell me in advance that they were going to unnecessarily and incorrectly increase the direct debit from £30 to £178.50, but they didn't. BT and direct debits - don't do it. It may save you a couple a quid a month, but it'll save you the hassle of them making you go overdrawn >: ( If you want to moan at BT accounts yourself, the number is 08000223089 for GB accounts. Others are via 0800800150.

Today is my third day without my XBox - decided to give it up for lent, because I had no idea what else I could. So far it has been easy and I don't expect it to get that much harder, but it will probably get annoying by next month, especially if an awesome new game comes out that I can't play :|

My job at Phones 4U, or chances of having it back are slightly hindered. Apparently all xmas temps have their details and such deleted from the system, and my name is alphabetically high on the list, so it was one of the first. I've re-applied online, but the jobs listed are all full-time. Hopefully, I'll be able to explain my position to the human resources people and get my job back.

I've got one minor step further in my 3rd year placement application. I received an e-mail from StepStone to tell me that my application has progressed and that they will be presenting my application to Microsoft in the coming week. There are still no guarantees of a placement, but it's been good to get this far. Hopefully they'll be happy with my application, see what they're looking for and advance me through to the final assessment stage.

N800: Actualizacion OS 2008

Ayer decidí upgradear el N800. Hacia tiempo que algunas aplicaciones no se instalaban y otras daban problemas. Pense... uhmm, basado en Debian... actualizaremos los repositorios, haremos un apt-get upgrade y listo...

!!Craso error!! ... me dice que se van a actualizar x paquetes, entre ellos librerias, dbus, hildon ...etc. Avisa de que es muy peligroso lo que estoy haciendo, ¿peligroso actualizar?.... le doy a upgradear, y todo correctamente instalado.

Reinicio para probar mi nuevo y flamante N800 actualizado. Y me encuentro que al llegar la barra de progreso a un punto, se reinicia y vuelve a reiniciar y reiniciar y reiniciar y asi en un maravilloso bucle infinito hasta que quitas la bateria.

Buscando un poco con san google, veo que Nokia tiene varias actualizaciones, y no actualiza via apt. Hay que bajarse la imagen de su pagina oficial y arrancar el N800 en modo upgrade.

Ahora voy a explicar el proceso de instalación de OS 2008. Hay gente que después de probarlo ha preferido quedarse en el OS 2007, pero para gustos los colores.

Para empezar hay que ir a este link donde nos pedira que escribamos la MAC del N800 y acto seguido seremos redirigidos a la página de descarga donde debemos de bajarnos la última version disponible:

Una vez bajado el firmware seria conveniente que también os bajarais el archivo MD5SUMS y le hicierais un checkeo de integridad:

$ md5sum firmware_XX_loquesea.bin

Si coincide la cifra con la del archivo MD5SUM, ya podemos proceder al flasheo. ( Recomiendo encarecidamente que hagais esta verificación al archivo, ya que, aunque han diseñado el N800 a prueba de torpes a la hora de flashear, es una buena costumbre hacer esto para prevenir futuros sustos con otros dispositivos o programas ).

Ahora en la misma carpeta donde está el firmware, descargamos el programa que se encarga de escribir el firm en la flash memory, que tambien lo proporciona Nokia en esta página.

Una vez que tengamos nuestra version de flasher, le damos permisos de ejecución:

$ chmod +x flasher-XX.bin

Desconectamos el cargador, apagamos el N800 y le conectamos el cable usb.

Acto seguido como usuario root hacemos:

# ./flasher-3.0 -F firmware_XX_loquesea.bin -f -R

Comienza a verificar archivos y la shell se nos deberia quedar con:

"Suitable USB device not found, waiting"

Encendemos el N800 manteniendo pulsado el boton Home ( el de la casa ) y enseguida comenzara a subir archivos al tablet, solo quedara esperar hasta que reinicie.

En el caso de que se os quede enganchado en este proceso o os de errores del tipo:

"Sending and flashing rootfs image (134400 kB)...
Sending request 0x54 failed: Timer expired"

No os preocupeis, volveis a repetir el flasheo y punto.

Lo primero que debemos hacer ahora es volver a tener acceso al usuario root que por defecto en todos los sistemas operativos del N800 está capado . Pinchad aqui para descargaros openssh-server, ( he tenido problemas con la instalación del paquete completo ) y a mitad de instalación os pedira que asigneis el password de root.

Una vez que este instalado, desde el pc abrís una conexion root via ssh. El password es el que habeis puesto en la instalacion de openssh-server.

$ ssh root@IP_del_N800

Bueno, ya somos root, ahora hay que habilitarlo para entrar desde osso-xterm. Para ello editamos el archivo "/usr/sbin/gainroot" cambiando la linea:

MODE=`/usr/sbin/chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool --get-rd-mode`

Por:

MODE=enabled

Y ya podemos entrar como root mediante el comando "sudo gainroot" .

Come installare un auricolare Bluetooth sul Nokia N800 e N810

1. Impostare il nostro Auricolare Bluetooth nella modalità di pairing (questa procedura varia in base al modello di auricolare che avete, verificate la procedura esatta sul manuale). Rimanere ad una distanza di rilevamento massimo 10 m tra auricolare e nokia internet tablet

2. Sul tablet cliccare sul menù applicazioni (il quadrato verde a sinistra)

3. Cliccare su impostazioni

4. Cliccare su Pannello di Controllo

5. Doppio click su Bluetooth

6. Impostare "Bluetooth On" e "Visible".

7. Cliccare su Devices.

8. Cliccare su Nuovo (New)

9. Aspettate che il tablet trovi il vostro auricolare e poi selezionatelo dalla lista e cliccate su ok

10. Se visualizza già un codice di pairing eliminatelo e inserite il codice di pairing del vostro auricolare

11. Assicuratevi che sia spuntato il controllo "Imposta come periferica di fiducia"

12. Cliccare OK.

13. Cliccare Chiudi.

14. Cliccare OK.

15. Chiudete il pannello di controllo

Da pochi giorni cominciano ad arrivare i primi nokia N810 anche in italia, dopo lo sblocco dei discount code e da subito tutti i felici possessori (anche io!!) hanno iniziato a smanettarci un po' su cercando di testare il piccolo internet tablet.

Naturamente dopo aver fatto un test generale e aver visionato dal vivo il nuovo sistema operativo OS 2008 chinook si incominci ad avere l'esigenza di installare quanche pacchetto ad esempio canola 2, aircrack-ng (ihihih!!) mapper etc..

Nei Repository già inseriti di default c'è il software libero di default che gira sull'OS2008, se volete quindi aggiungere nuove liste a quelle che avete già potete farlo in modo semplice dal sito : www.gronmayer.com che è una specie di aggregatore di repos per maemo
