In a previous comment, NK shares that s/he believes that the best course of action is not to rush into any relationships, and that got me thinking. I have to disagree. In my 27 years, I have never--not once--had love just come along and find me. Heaven knows I wish it worked that way, but I don't think I'm someone that these things happen to. I don't know why. Maybe it's because I don't really fit in anywhere; maybe I'm unapproachable; maybe I just have a limited circle of friends or acquaintances. Whatever it is, I think that the whole idea of waiting for love, or anything for that matter, is crap.

I really don't want to discount what NK said, though. Maybe that really does work for some of you. If it does, you have to tell me your secret because I am baffled.

If I want something, I have to go after it. Nothing ever comes if I wait. If I'm lucky, maybe a woman will strike up a conversation once a month or so, which means I'm always the initiator. Then, no matter how flirtatious our exchange, it ends there if I don't act on it and get her number or plan another meeting. Still, even at that point, I'll never get a second date if I don't plan it. Every step along the way has to be deliberate, and whenever I've backed off, it inevitably signaled the end of the relationship.  Love never just came to me; I always had to pursue it.

I have rushed into relationships before, and I freely admit that NK was right about how hollow and lonely I came to feel after a while. I'm not sure how much of that has been my bipolar cycle hitting a low and how much has been due to the rushing nature, but to be perfectly honest I'm not sure how to do it any other way. Once someone has established herself as my friend, our relationship never goes any further. Then again, maybe I misunderstand completely.

How does one let love find them?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- North Korea is to blow up a key part of its controversial Yongbyon nuclear reactor on Friday.

Hyun Hak-Bong (right), North Korea's deputy negotiator to six-party talks, crosses the border into South Korea on June 5.

The destruction of the plant's cooling tower is part of an agreement with the United States aimed at denuclearizing the Korean peninsula in exchange for loosening some restrictions on the highly secretive Communist country.

The North Korean government has invited news organizations, including CNN, to witness the event.

Earlier this year, Pyongyang agreed to disable its nuclear reactor and provide a full accounting of its plutonium stockpile, "acknowledge" concerns about its proliferation activities and its uranium enrichment activity, and agree to continue cooperation with a verification process to ensure no further activities are taking place.

North Korea has been taking Yongbyon's main reactor apart, but imploding the cooling tower is an exceptionally important psychological step given that the highly recognizable shape of the structure is synonymous with nuclear power plants.

Foreign Policy magazine has a feature on the Top Tourists Spots Americans Can't Visit. It seems to be in preparation for July 4, possibly since the reason we can't visit is the decided lack of law/order/safety/freedom of the territorial government.

The list includes:

• Mount Kumgang, Kumgangsan, North Korea
• Baracoa, Cuba
• The beaches of Mogadishu, Somalia
• Persepolis, Iran
• Mandalay, Burma

Of the five, only Mogadishu and Persepolis are must-sees for me. I think Persepolis might eventually be possible with a new president, but Mogadishu may take a while. I'm not exactly faint hearted about travel, but FP's explanation as to why not to go is compelling:

Because a good day in Somalia is the worst day of your life almost anywhere else.... The U.S. government does not maintain any consular presence in Mogadishu, so an American in trouble is likely to stay there. Most troubling is the fact that with little recognized, governing authority in Somalia, simply identifying which of the seemingly endless string of warlords and criminals has just kidnapped you is an important first step in negotiating your release.

I wonder why Cowen and Blattman didn't include advice for getting to know your kidnapper....

China is reportedly developing a North Korean iron mine through a joint venture with the North.

According to Chinese sources familiar with North Korean affairs, a leading Chinese magnesite processor is a partner in the joint venture. The development of the mine in Ongjin, North Hwanghae Province began in the second half of last year.

Man förmodar gärna att de som handlar där tillhör den medvetna,köpstarka storstadseliten,de som lägger ut rejält med pengar på märkeskläder för barn och senaste vagnen,inte sällan har de väl flera olika vagnar för att matcha mammas outfit för dagen.
Och eftersom de ser sig själva som medvetna och köpstarka så kan man ju tro att de fattar att barn och parfym är en meningslös och helt onödig kombination.

North Korea is expected to submit the full declaration of its nuclear activities to China as early as next week.

The AFP news agency reported, quoting an Asian diplomat, that the North is likely to make a nuclear declaration next week when top U.S. nuclear envoy Christopher Hill visits China.

The news outlet predicted that Pyongyang would want to make up for time it has lost and start scrapping its nuclear weapons soon after the nuclear disclosure.

The U.S. State Department confirmed Saturday that Hill will visit China and Russia next week.
It also said that the chief U.S. nuclear negotiator could meet his North Korean counterpart Kim Kye-kwan in Beijing during the trip.

To discuss North Korea’s nuclear disclosure, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State will visit Beijing from May 27th to 29th and will then fly to Moscow.

A primeira hemisferectomia registrada foi feita em um cão, em 1888, pelo fisiologista alemão Friedrich Goltz. O neurocirurgião Walter Dandy foi o pioneiro na operação em humanos, em 1923, na Johns Hopkins University, Estados Unidos, com um paciente que tinha um tumor cerebral. (A pessoa sobreviveu por mais ou menos três anos, antes de sucumbir ao câncer.)

Em 1938, depois de realizar uma hemisferectomia em uma jovem de 16 anos, o neurocirurgião canadense Kenneth McKenzie relatou que a operação podia interromper convulsões debilitantes. Hoje, cirurgiões cerebrais fazem hemisferectomias em pacientes que têm dezenas de convulsões diárias, resistentes a toda medicação e decorrentes de condições que afligem essencialmente um só hemisfério. 'Essas doenças são geralmente progressivas e danificam o resto do cérebro se não forem tratadas', argumenta o neurocirurgião Gary W. Mathern, da University of California em Los Angeles (Ucla).

A cirurgia tem duas formas possíveis. Hemisferectomias anatômicas envolvem a remoção de um hemisfério inteiro, enquanto hemisferectomias funcionais retiram apenas parte de um deles - além de seccionar o corpo caloso, o feixe de fibras que conecta as duas metades do cérebro. A cavidade esvaziada é deixada assim, e acaba sendo preenchida por fluido cérebro-espinhal com o tempo.

Em geral os médicos preferem hemisferectomias anatômicas, porque 'deixar mesmo que um pouco de cérebro pode fazer com que as convulsões retornem', diz o neurologista John Freeman, da Johns Hopkins University, local especializado nesse procedimento. Por outro lado, as hemisferectomias funcionais, que os cirurgiões da UCLA preferem, resultam em menos hemorragia. 'Nossos pacientes costumar ter menos de 2 anos de idade, de modo que têm pouco sangue a perder', diz Mathern. Os neurocirurgiões já realizaram a operação funcional até me crianças com apenas 3 meses de idade. Nesses pequenos pacientes a memória e a personalidade se desenvolvem normalmente. A maioria dos pacientes de hemisferectomia da Johns Hopkins tem mais de 5 anos. Um estudo recente mostrou que 86% das 111 crianças que passaram pelo procedimento entre 1975 e 2001 estão livres das convulsões ou apresentam convulsões não incapacitantes, que dispensam medicamentos. Outro estudo verificou que crianças que passaram por uma hemisferectomia freqüentemente melhoraram o desempenho escolar após o fim das convulsões. 'Uma foi campeã de boliche de sua classe, outro, campeão de xadrez do estado, e outros já estão na faculdade, indo muito bem', afirma Freeman.

Mas dá para dançar?

Evidentemente, a remoção de metade do cérebro tem seus efeitos negativos - como uma perda de função em um lado do corpo. 'Dá para caminhar, correr - até dançar -, mas perde-se o controle da mão do lado oposto ao hemisfério retirado', diz Freeman. A visão também fica prejudicada.

Além disso, se o lado esquerdo do cérebro for o removido, a maior parte dos pacientes ficam com problemas na fala. Mas, quanto mais jovem é uma pessoa quando passa pela hemisferectomia, menor a deficiência de linguagem que provavelmente apresentará.

Mathern e seus colaboradores fizeram recentemente o primeiro estudo de ressonância magnética funcional em pacientes de hemisferectomia, para investigar como o cérebro deles se modifica ao longo da reabilitação física. Verificar como o hemisfério cerebral restante desses pacientes adquire funções motoras, sensoriais, de linguagem e outras 'poderia lançar bastante luz sobre a plasticidade do cérebro, isto é, sua habilidade de modificar-se', observa Freeman. Ainda assim, diz, a hemisferectomia está entre os tipos mais drásticos de cirurgia cerebral e é 'algo que só se faz quando as alternativas são piores'."
