I have finally come to grips that Ballon fight is not truly original, as it pays homage to the Atari arcade classic Joust. The game play in both titles is quintessentially the same. However, Balloon Fight brings more to the table than just solid well established game play. The game refines the game mechanics and also improves the look of a simple arcade game. The fact that the quality animation (not graphics) gives the game a smooth flowing looks makes Balloon Fight simply fun to watch.
Maintaining the trend of simultaneous multiplayer makes the game even crazier. Being able play both co-op and head-to-head adds depth to the multiplayer mode. I'm finding myself inviting friends over to play Balloon fight multiplayer style. They call me crazy for playing outdated video game, but then always want to play them. Balloon fight takes a very simple concept with tride and true game play, and comes up with something fresh fun.

Hi good news: The xserver runs !!!!! XD XD XD:

Here is a video, booting the T2 SDE 6.0 linux distribution for powerpc. It boots from an external usb hard disk, using the SD card as a pivot root. It can´t boot directly to an USB hard disk, as it isn´t recognized at boot time. The colours are wrong, as the X server runs in RGB mode, and the wii framebuffer only supports yuv2 colours. And the usb mouse doesn´t seems to work. Anyway, it shows how to boot, the login and little more.

Have fun

Recently Square Enix released a small website, under the sensor of course, for Chrono Trigger pointing to the DS. Not long after an official announcement was made regarding this long-awaited game. Square Enix made America very happy when they told us Chrono Trigger would be available by the holidays. The new and improved version of Chrono will be very promising showing to have some extra features like a new dungeon and some sort of wireless play. There will also be touch-screen support of course.

Here’s a nice article from Rob Fahey, former editor of GamesIndustry.biz, over at Times Online. Fahey makes several interesting points, including many factoids that would fit nicely in research articles on videogames.

- Nintendo is now the second most valuable company (by market cap) in Japan, after Toyota

- Consequently, the market believes the industry as a whole has enormous growth potential

- Game Group is Britain’s largest videogame retailer. Profits for the first half of 2008 will top £33 million, beating analyst estimates by 33%

- Consequently, Game Group’s market cap now tops the country’s largest construction firm by three times

- The current focus on all age groups by videogame companies is the natural outcome of marketing efforts beginning in the 1990s, when Sony began branching out from children’s television advertisements for the PlayStation to nightclubs

- The market for videogames continues to expand into all segments of the population, from teenage boys to older men; to girls and women; to senior citizens; to families as a whole

- The advanced graphics and capabilities of videogames have created a dynamic platform for storytelling that rivals moviemaking in scope

Finally, Fahey sums up with this statement, showing that eventually gaming will engulf everyone:

As video games continue to break new creative and commercial ground, the conclusion the markets have reached is simple - and inevitable. Being a stranger to interactive entertainment will be seen as eccentric as watching TV on a black and white set. Soon, we will all be gamers.

Enfim, Nintendo a capella:

If you remember on April 1st, 2008, IGN.com posted their joke known as "The Legend Of Zelda: The Movie" trailer. Like many people, I thought it would make a good movie just by IGN's faux trailer. So, now I'm wondering "what games could be turned into movies if done right?". I, kind of, made a list of games I personally think could get the big screen treatment.

*Halo - I don't have Xbox but, I would assume it could be a movie if done right.
*Megaman - If done right, it could be a good series. The birth of Megaman and Dr. Wily and Sigma teaming up some how. Protoman being bad but then turning good.
*Mario Bros. - I know there's already a movie about them but, we need an ACCURATE remake. The only correct thing is the last name (Mario Mario & Luigi Mario) and they were from Brooklyn.
*Sonic The Hedgehog - If he can have 5 cartoon shows and many comics, why not do a movie? The way they do Sonic in the games now, they can do the same for a movie.
*Paper Mario - I'm sorry but, I would pay to watch a well done Paper Mario movie. That's just me.

This is just a small list but I'm sure there's some I'm missing (and some I can't seem to think of). So, I say go for the gusto and post a comment of what you think would make a good Game-to-Movie.

The Amazon Gold Box deal at 8PM (central time) tonight was a Nyko wireless nunchuk for the Wii. I've been interested in this peripheral since it was first announced, but the steep $35 introductory price frightened me away. The Gold Box deal knocked $10 off the price, and Amazon had apprently taken off an extra buck somewhere else in the process, leaving me with a $24 nunchuk, and free shipping. Just four measly dollars more than a regular "wired" nunchuk. That four dollars is a easy cost to associate with the freedom of a wireless peripheral, isn't it? I think so.

The deal is still going on, for those interested. I'll have a review just as soon as it shows up on my doorstep.

In my list of hobbies, I should just say "collecting hobbies." If there is something out there that's crafty or interesting in anyway, I usually want to take a crack at it. I tend to jump into these endeavors head first, with, for some unknown reason, an aversion to instructions. I think I'm a lot like a dude in that regard - I don't even ask for directions if I'm lost (in my defense I was a victim of a fucking mean playful gas station attendant the first time I stopped for directions in Memphis, being hopelessly lost and only 16, she gave me very precise directions through the ghetto and to a dead end, when I just needed to get to the highway. The immediate result was only a minor nervous breakdown, but in the long run, a lifetime of avoiding asking directions at any cost. But I digress...). I usually manhandle the craft supplies until I get some sort of result, and almost always realize I'm in WAY over my head and break down and read a how-to on the subject.

Anyway! My latest hobby acquisition: Cross Stitching! Here is my first project:

I saw a cross stitched something or other on the internet and thought that those little stitches looked exactly like pixels! Or legos, which I used for a pattern. Also, perler beads. So here I was thinking I was all unique and clever, but once I start trolling around the internet, I find that I'm on the tail end of this idea. Geeky cross stitches are EVERYWHERE. My favorite geeky cross stitching blogger so far is definitely Sprite Stitch. He updates all the time and has a bunch of fun patterns, and most impressive, is a dude that cross stitches. How awesome is that?

I'm currently working on a Black Mage pattern from his website. Hopefully now that I've actually done some reading on this cross stitch craziness, this one will turn out better.

In the previous postings we’ve looked at the on-site and off-site culinary options offered at

In the previous postings we've looked at the on-site and off-site culinary options offered at EA Redwood Shores, Ubisoft Montreal, and Microsoft. Now it's time to visit the home of Mario…and I'm hoping there's more than mushrooms on the menu.

Where: Nintendo of America in Redmond, Washington

Why I was there: I made my first trip to Nintendo almost exactly a year ago to work on the guide for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. This was also the first time I had to play an entire game on-site, requiring a two-week stay. Fortunately, I had a mapper with me (David Bueno) who helped expedite the process as we fought (and mapped) our way through Samus' latest adventure. But I wasn't the only Prima author setting up camp in the Pikachu conference room last summer. Steve Stratton was there too working on Phantom Hourglass; later joined by Levi. On our first day, Steve showed David and I around, making sure we knew where to go for breakfast, lunch…or any other time we needed something to eat.

The Facility: Café Mario is located on Nintendo's second floor, just down the hall from the employee store and museum. A line-up of culinary choices welcome you as you enter the cafeteria, including a large salad bar on the left and a number of hot and made-to-order options on the right. The dining area is reasonably spacious with plenty of seating options, even during the height of the lunch hour. Windows line one entire wall, providing plenty of natural light which complement the warm colors on the walls. More seating is available outside on a large patio. During E3 last year they setup a mini-E3 in the back corner of the indoor dining area for all the employees who couldn’t attend the real show. This allowed the employees (and even visitors like us) to try out some of the new stuff; Wii Fit was a big hit.

The Food: Operated by Sodexo, Café Mario offers everything from snacks to full meals, serving hot dishes daily for breakfast and lunch. While I never ate breakfast there, the smell of bacon, eggs, sausage, and hash browns were a daily temptation as I wandered in for my morning bottle of orange juice. Given my lengthy stay, I had plenty of time to explore the lunch menu. For the most part the menu is static, but signature dishes are provided on different days of the week, constantly offering a fresh selection for their regular customers. I sampled a few of the grill items (including the Luigi Burger) but quickly became attached to the salad bar and make-your-own sandwich counter. Pizza by the slice is offered too, which I often enjoyed with a side salad. No matter what I ordered, the damage rarely exceeded $5, which is a great deal considering the quality and quantity of food provided.

Alternatives: Nintendo is located in a somewhat isolated office park. So if you want to go off-site, you better have a car. Redmond Town Center is only a short jaunt up highway 520 offering plenty of great restaurants like Ruby's Diner, Thai Ginger, Claim Jumper, and Desert Fire. A variety of fast food restaurants are located on Redmond Way too. During my stays (I was there a few weeks later for Battalion Wars 2) I never felt the need to go out for lunch. I could always find the variety I wanted at Café Mario. It seems most of the employees feel the same way. I even saw Reggie Phils-Aime loading up at the salad bar one day. So if it's good enough for Reggie, it's good enough for me.

Pretty much as title says, I'm bored and I'm tired.

I'm currently listening to some Soundgarden - a few years old, but great music. It's the former band of the lead singer from Audioslave, Chris Cornell (he also went solo for one of the James Bond themes). Anyway, that's how bored I am, I have to wrtie about what I'm listening to.

Went to a wedding yesterday, which was alright. Not many people I knew but it was still fun, even if it did rain. Constantly. But hey, that's the Scottish weather for you.

Still haven't seen Toms Hitler cat. I really want to, so I'll try and post pics when I do finally manage to see it:)

Oh, and I just bought myself a gamecube for some retro gaming - Nintendo style! Kind of an impulse buy, and got loads of games. Too many probably. Infact no, you can't have too many games. EVER. Also got a gameboy advance for some pokemon, I love that game :)

Anyway, I can't be arsed wrighting anymore, because I am so tired. I'll add more in another post, but for now I'm going.

Oh, if you have last.fm add me at www.last.fm/user/neillya1

That MSN conversation with Tom and Nikki is calling me with it's flashing icon at the bottom of my screen. Should really go and see what the idoit and the bassist are up to I guess.

I'll leave you with a completely random and unrelated picture today, because I can't think what to put.

Who ever said blashphemy wasn't fun?

It's that time of the week again and this week i've selected a little gem from 2004, celebrating the release of Pikmin 2. I just find the idea of small people dressed as Pikmin collecting hotdogs inexplicably hilarious, and in tune with the the game (although it was more batteries and bottle caps than hotdogs) Anyway, I hope you enjoy it :)

E3 kicks off in the next eight days and the wait is going to kill me. This post will definitely not

E3 kicks off in the next eight days and the wait is going to kill me. This post will definitely not ease my pain at all, but I'm going to share with you my hype for Microsoft's conference as well as Nintendo's.

Nintendo has been really quiet as to what we can expect for the rest of the year as far as their big titles go. Hopefully they have something big planned for E3, whether it's a new Legend of Zelda or something brand new (I hope so) because aside from a few big titles that we've seen from them, that have already been released, there hasn't been the greatest library of high tier titles on the Wii. I would hope they have some quality titles coming from some third parties as well as first party. As we've already seen, The Conduit is shaping up nicely and the team over at High Voltage seems to be taking advantage of online play as well as developing a strong first person shooter for the platform. Now we can only wait to see what else third parties are doing. I can't really share anything more for Nintendo because I really have no idea what to expect.

Microsoft is definitely the last of the three that I would ever worry about delivering on games considering their track record thus far in the current generation. One thing, however, that I really disliked about last year's conference was that they focused a lot on multiplatform games and seemingly less on their exclusives if my memory serves me right. For me, it's really the big exclusive titles that make a console special to me, granted I do buy a few multiplatform games here and there. I just hope they really kick it up a notch and have some real big surprises in store for us this year. We already know about a few of their games that we can expect to ship this year and that will most likely show at E3. Some games such as Halo Wars and even Fable 2 are seemingly less likely to make it out the door in 2008. All I know is that we can definitely expect some unique titles from Microsoft this year provided the 'Newton' motion controller rumors are true.

The following are some of the titles I am hyped for/expecting to show:

Gears of War 2 - Bigger, better, and more badass as Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games describes it, is most likely the biggest game Microsoft has in store for us in 2008 and as a follow up to one of 2006's greatest games, with a greatly improved campaign and a more in-depth polished multiplayer experience this one is definitely on my 'Must Buy' list.

Halo Wars - I've given the Halo franchise a fair amount of flack over the years, regardless of how much I secretly do love the games (Oops, the secret is out). After 'Finishing the Fight' in Halo 3 I felt underwhelmed. The Halo universe is something I'd love to continue exploring and Halo Wars gives me this opportunity except with a 'strategic' twist. I haven't gotten into a good RTS game in a long time and it's about time I do with Halo Wars.

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts - Banjo & his feathered friend Kazooie have earned a place in my heart since their first outing on the Nintendo 64. Now the third iteration of the franchise is set to release on the Xbox 360 this year. Even though I'm really skeptical about the vehicle focused gameplay, I'm still willing to give Banjo a shot even if it turns out to be something completely different than what I would expect from these two seemingly odd partners.

Fable 2 - As I've stated above, Fable 2 seems as if it won't even make it this year. The first Fable was okay but nothing more. Peter Molyneux has been known for making bold promises and not delivering on them, yet even with his reputation some of the grand promises he has made for Fable 2 have got me excited. Let's just hope Lionhead Studios can back his strong words.

Other Noteworthy Games:

Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, Alan Wake

Overall, I'm expecting all three companies to deliver great titles this year and get us salivating at what's to come. I will give my comments/impressions of each conference as soon as they come to a close. Stay tuned for more.
