Saraiva Megastore: "quem procura acha".

On the 30th of June, 2008 Nick Hornby wrote:

“For the first nineteen years of his life, Johnny Razor wasn’t Johnny Razor at all. He was Malcolm Weatherly, and he was born in Mile End Underground station on the night of 17th September 1940.”

These are the opening 35 words of The Forever Story.

A story that will be written, not by one author, but many. It’s an innovative online concept that will be launched 11th August and will encourage people to contribute to the world’s longest collectively-written story. The more people who join in, the longer the story will be, and the more money will be raised for children who find it hard to join in; children with Autism.

There are around 100,000 children with Autism in the UK, with around half a million family members directly affected by the condition. We want to raise awareness of the work Treehouse does to alleviate the often huge financial and emotional pressures associated with looking after a child with Autism and raise the much needed money so their work can continue.

For every single contribution to the story via our website: The Forever Story, TalkTalk will donate £1 to Treehouse. We want to reach TalkTalk’s donation target of £50,000 and to do that we’d like people to have the opportunity to write alongside some of the world’s most well-known and respected writers.

What we need from you? Just 35 or so words to continue our community-driven epic. The result of which will be more donations to Treehouse.

We already have the support of Nick Hornby who opens our story and more writers are poised to contribute. We’d love you to be amongst them.

We’re gearing up now in preparation for the start of a story that everyone should be compelled to participate in.

So beginnt der Klappentext des Romans "A Long Way Down" von Nick Hornby.

"A Long Way Down" ist übrigens auch der deutsche Titel des Buches. :-)

Nick Hornby: Langt nede.

Nick Hornby: Langt nede.

[caption id="attachment_266" align="alignright" width="223" caption="Den engelske forfatter Nick Hornby"][/caption]

Selv døden er vel næppe mere bitter;

Umiddelbart virker slutningen noget tam.

Albert Camus skriver i "Sisyfos myten", at "Der findes kun ét virkeligt alvorligt filosofisk problem: selvmordet. Derfor bør man huske hvorfor man lever.

Siamo in ferie, finalmente...

Però poi ci ricerchiamo in chat e continuiamo certi discorsi.

Have you read anything by Nick Hornby? If not, I think you should rush out and do so. I recommended A Long Way Down to my supervisor recently and she is listening to it on CD. Coincidentally, my book club pal Kathleen and her husband also listened to it on their recent road trip. Rave reviews on all sides, so I thought I would share it with you, too.

I read the book in print format, but reportedly the audiobook is even more of a treat. Here's the basic plotline: A diverse group of Londoners encounter each other on the roof of a tall building on New Year's Eve. Each one has plans of throwing themselves off the roof and ending it all. As these strangers become acquainted in this odd setting, they decide not to commit suicide then and there, and before you know it, they have become involved with each other.

Hornby's writing style is a pleasure to read. The book is not only very funny, but has something important to say about human connection.

Happy Reading!

- Niemi, Marjo: Juostu maa (Teos 2004).

- Hornby, Nick: Uskollinen äänentoisto (WSOY 1996) & saman tekijän Alas on pitkä matka (WSOY 2006).

- By, Oddbjørn: Memo - Helppo tapa parantaa muistia (Bazar 2008).

- Kinsella, Sophie: Himoshoppaaja-kirjat (WSOY).

- Vuosi nuoruudestani (1999). Tositapahtumiin perustuva kuvaus Susanna Kaysen -nimisen ahdistuneen tytön ajasta 1960-luvun jenkkiläisessä mielisairaalassa. Angelina Jolie sai sivuosa-Oscarin roolistaan vaikeasti häiriintyneenä sosiopaatti-Lisana. Eikä suotta, jos minulta kysytään. Elokuva on ahdistavimpia, joita olen koskaan nähnyt.

TV

Syksyllä television pariin rynnätään suoraan sateesta ja velvollisuuksien väsyttäminä. Silloin tulee helposti valittua kaikkea vähemmän älykästä katsottavaa niiden ikisuosikkidraamojen lisäksi. Televisio tarjoaa tätä nykyä himputisti huonoa tosi-tv:tä, mutta se kieltämättä toimii stressintappajana aina toisinaan. Kun raskaan päivän angstit on selätetty, ehtiikin sitten juuri sopivasti laatudraamojen ääreen.

- Idolsin neljäs tuotantokausi (alkaa MTV3:lla 11.9.). Pakko näitä maineenhakuisia "laulaja"tallukoita on taas kerran kyylätä. Saas nähdä, onko Ari Koivusen nappaama edellisen Idolsin voitto poikinut tälle kaudelle entistä enemmän ärsyttäviä ja noloja "hevi"yrittelijöitä. Kotisohvalta on helppo huudella.

- Eri maiden Huippumalli haussa -tuotantokausia (Pyörivät Nelosella arkisin kuuden aikaan).

- Riitasointuja (Nelosella 11.8. alkaen). Hyvää vastapainoa Idolsille on katsoa fiktiivistä draamasarjaa - aiheenaan tietysti Idols-tyyppisen laulukisan raadollisuus ja unelmien murskautuminen. Odotan tätä kovasti.

- Rooma (toinen tuotantokausi Nelosella 20.8. alkaen). Eeppistä historiadraamaa isolla budjetilla tuotettuna. Kyllähän tätäkin katselee, vaikka jokaiselle historiaa vähänkin lukeneelle tapahtumien kulku on melkoisen ennalta-arvattava...

- Maria! (Nelosella 27.8. alkaen).

- 5 kulmaa kosmologiaan (YLE1, 11.8. alkaen). Esko "Parta" Valtaojan keskusteluohjelma kiinnostaa myös "kosmista maallikkoa", sillä Valtaoja on puhujana karismaattinen ja toivon tähtitiede-ekspertin saavan vieraistaankin irti paljon painavaa sanottavaa. Kun ohjelmaan on kutsuttu vieraaksi esimerkiksi uskontotieteilijä, en voi väittää, ettenkö olisi entistä kiinnostuneempi katsomaan ohjelmaa. Toivottavasti asia on puettu meille tallukoillekin passeliin muotoon.

Musiikki

Yleisesti ottaen omalla kohdallani syksy on suomenkielisen musiikin luvattua aikaa. Perisuomalainen melankolia on autenttisimmillaan, kun taivas itkee vettä valtoimenaan ja stereoissa pauhaa jynkkykitaroin maustettu raskaampi rock, jota värittävät kunnon itkuvirsimäiset sanoitukset, joita vielä on yleensä tulkitsemassa keski-ikää lähestyvä, sinnepäin laulava suomalainen uros. Voilá, tai PERKELE, jos sallitte.

Hiya. Long time no post. Oh, well, I'm back now anyhow.

The last two weeks was our holiday and I got to read quite a few books. Nick Hornby and Erlend Loe are two of my favourite authors, so I read High Fidelity, Fever Pitch and Slam by Nick Hornby, and Fakta om Finland (Facts about Finland) by Erlend Loe.

I have to say, I find these two authors strikingly similar. Well, perhaps not strikingly, but I do see some resemblances. They are both men around the same age, and they write about every day characters, mostly men (although they have both written, to my knowledge, one book each where the main character is a woman) who goes through some personal issues in regards to coping with life.

The books can seem trivial because of their everyday aspects, the mundane details and the slightly naivistic (Loe more so) style of writing, but they are both in the text itself and inbetween the lines dealing with topics that most people can recognize in themselves. Everything from insecurity and low self esteem to love and death is delt with in Hornby's and Loe's books.

I have now read all Hornby's novels (and one non-fiction, his autobiography) and four of Loe's novels so far, and I have really enjoyed them all. So far my favourite Hornby book is How to be Good and my favourite Loe book is L. (Interestingly enough, both those books were the first one I read of the respective authors).

If you are looking for a book that can deal with both trivial and profound topics in one and the same book, involving both humor and a easy-to-read language, I would advice reading Hornby or Loe. They are both brilliant. (For English speakers: From Erlend Loe, only Naive. Super is translated into English.)

Whilst not up to his previous highs of A Long Way Down, or High Fidelity, the book has some good things going for it. It is written in Hornby's usual light and witty style. And again, he deals with some serious issues.

Sam is a teenage boy who loves skateboarding. He's been brought up by his mum, who was a teenage parent when she had him, and doesn't he know it! He almost carries around the guilt that he ruined her life and he is determined not to fall into the same trap. But generally has a good relationship with his mum. He is a fairly typical teenager - one who is bored by school and who ends relationships simply by stopping calling.

However, by accident (of course), he gets Alicia, his girlfriend, pregnant. His initial reaction is to run away to Hastings, get a job, start a new life, and forget about everything. Of course, that doesn't work and he comes home and faces up to what has happened. The rest of the book is about how Sam deals with it and comes to some maturity. Near the end, once the baby is born, the book starts to drag a little, but as I said, there are a few good points worth looking at.

Firstly, the book shows quite clearly that sex can make babies, even when you try to be careful. Current society has divorced sex from family in a way that often hides this. At no point in the book is the pregnancy a 'problem' that just needs to be 'dealt with'. The pregnancy is always a baby. Abortion is mentioned but Sam and Alicia never seriously consider it (although it might have been interesting to see in the book how this conversation might have gone). Their priority is to get through the next nine months and afterwards.

Secondly, Hornby employs an interesting way for Sam to think through his feelings. Sam, being a skateboarder is a huge fan of skateboarding legend Tony Hawk (who is actually a real person). Sam has a poster of Tony on his bedroom wall and knows the words to Tony Hawk's autobiography by heart. As a result, Sam seems to talk to Tony through the poster, and Tony talks back through the words of his book, Tony acts as a sort of interactive god to Sam, giving advice and thoughts. This reminded me a little of the Orthodox use of icons in order to commune with God, except that Tony isn't God. It shows Sam's need for a spiritual 'other' - a higher power to aspire to and to guide.

The end of the book starts to drag a little, especially once the baby is born. And it gets a little predictable. Not Nick Hornby's best book by any means, but it's a short read, has some funny moments, and some thoughtful ones.

I know that listing is best left to Jack Black and Nick Hornby. But, it's fun sometimes. The urge to canonize is essential to understanding a medium- or at least, to the fetishization of it- so I thought, with a healthy sense of irony, I could get away with a little play on the classic Top 10 as a weekly feature here at the leh repertwarr. Plus, I'm just too impatient to write things of substance here. Does anyone read this either way?

Believe me, I hate the AFI just as much as you do. So you will never hear me use the words greatest (or American, hopefully) in any of these features. And additionally, I'm going to resist ranking any of the films that I discuss under the headings I come to every week. WHATS MORE! I'm going to try to thread these things together, to have a common factor between each group of films week to week. So, like, if I happen to have included Naomi Watts in my list of the Top 5 Most Obnoxious Australians in Film, I might use the actress and her Lynchian bygones as my TANGENT for the next week's list: the Top 10 Movies For Which Knowing What Is Going On Is Not Necessary. Get it?

Commence!

I'm a genre film fan. This is a resoundingly annoying statement, I know. But it's a fact- I love when cinema finds a way to commute its pretensions to terms of genre, color, and style. I really do think that the greatest (oops!) instances of "high art" have a definite relationship to the opposite end of the spectrum, and that "trash" is an interminably versatile word. But, who the fuck wants to see another discussion of the best Sci-Fi films? Or even of the most interesting instances of exploitation?

That type of list would most certainly get me in trouble, so here's my alternative: Isn't it fascinating when genre films disguise themselves as the most serious fare? The system of sensation and spectacle can be so drastically manipulated, and hidden under layer after layer of the high art aesthetic. Because of this, the most exciting trait of the horror genre is, to me, that the monster truly can take any form. A horror film certainly doesn't need to have a physical villain to cause abject terror, it can draw affect from setting, theme, or mood and cause plenty of skin-crawling:

TOP 5 SCARIEST NOT-HORROR FILMS

AGUIRRE: THE WRATH OF GOD (1972)

Doesn't than name have just the most amazing catastrophe to it? Werner Herzog is amazing, sure. German, definitely. His philosophies are so dark and virile that his films ooze tropes of the horror genre. Sturm und drang seem to compose every bit of his somewhat fucked up string of virtuoso film exercises. DER ZORN GOTTES is no exception.

THE MONSTER: The Amazon. The S. American jungle in this film is utterly horrifying. From the first frame it begins to devour the human capability of it's conquistador prey. Just like in a slasher film, the supporting characters are unceremoniously taken out by wild aspects of the setting and their own blunders. Klaus Kinski's slow descent into evil ravings, culminating in the film's spectacular final scene (monkeys fucking EAT him!), is egged on by the Amazon, and finally succumbs to his insanity and the seething environment the very film's last dregs of humanity are defeated by nature.

LORD OF THE FLIES (1963)

William Golding clearly had intentions very similar to those of a horror writer with his classic novel about boy castaways. The novel is a beautiful exploration of the way manhood looms in front of a child and, even in the most disastrous of situations, cannot always be achieved before due time. Peter Brooks' film adaptation is simply one of the best examples of a movie that respects and expounds upon its source text, treating the story as not only a lyrical sort of eulogy for youth, but a terrifying study of boyhood pettiness.

THE MONSTER: KIDDIES! Kids are fucking creepy! Any horror buff knows this. The horrific child is one of the genre's favorite icons. But, when the Children of the Corn are traded for innocent victims of happenstance, their development into little terrors is all the more affecting. The spectacle of these poor English schoolboys completely deteriorating into raving animals should be revered as an ultimate spectacle of horror.

PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (1975)

Peter Wier's languorous study of summer (and girls) is a hypnotic and, eventually, wholly disturbing example of the effect of filmic tone on the viewing experience. The movie displays a haggle of girls from an Australian boarding school lounging in the haze of an afternoon, under the menacing crag that gives the work its name. When they suddenly disappear, the whole that this loss of characters and the angelic young woman at their lead, creates an empty space in the film that is absolutely haunting.

THE MONSTER: Time, Summer, and GIRLIES! In a sort of centrifugal Antonionian narrative weave, Wier terrorizes his viewer with brief pangs of loss that are felt in both the visual and aural tone of the film. When the girls go missing (have they been abducted? fallen to their deaths? spirited away to another world?), its as if the central binding figures of the film have been torn away. The effect is a severe, creeping sense of doom, and the suffocating heat that oozes off of the film's gorgeous cinematography only accentuates this feeling.

[SAFE] (1995)

[SAFE]'s coyly bracketed title perfectly summarizes its affect. The walls begin to close in on Julianne Moore (brilliant, here) from the first frame of the film, and her slow suffocation is the stuff of classic horror.

THE MONSTER: Disease, Paranoia, Modernity. Todd Haynes is self-admittedly obsessed with exploring identity and its influences in a wide range of style. Here, in another slowly creeping horror exercise, he turns his questioning gaze to New Age medicine, pollution, and the generally suffocating aesthetic of smoggy Los Angeles. The protagonist in SAFE is worried that she's being poisoned by her atmosphere, and it becomes clear that whether or not she's actually afflicted, her environment is absolutely out to kill her. Her wan figure becomes more and more like a porcelain doll as her home life and the eventual trip to a New Age healing retreat conspire to break her completely. The film's one rare moment of fresh air is a great example of its horror tropes: Moore's character is wandering in a California field, thinking for a spare moment that she might actually be healing, and she stumbles on a highway. Modern progress, pollution, exhaust, and the general invasion of natural space by modern shapes is punctuated by the car that blasts by her. The audience definitely shares in her horror.

SALO, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)

Shortly before being brutally murdered, poet, playwright, homosexual, alleged nihilist and film master, Pier Paolo Pasolini completed what is surely the most revolting cinematic spectacle in the history of the medium. Salò is an impossible film to enjoy; a fable of awful violence, masochism, and torture and... well, it's just a film that's pretty hard to talk about pleasantly. But its is an absolutely astounding and necessary masterwork.

THE MONSTER: Spectacle. Salò is the ultimate exploitation film. Based loosely on the Marquis de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom, it features what is probably the most disgusting string of depictions possible outside of snuff cinema (this term is hardly inappropriate for the work itself). It trudges from rape to torture, fascist declarations and sick piques of comedy, and is truly, bodily disgusting. But, the film contains an absolutely destructive social commentary and a statement on the experience of cinema that it is impossible to shake. It's genius and horror lies in the way Salò incriminates its viewer. It taunts the spectator, dares him to look away but keeps a brutal hold on the eye. It's as if the film is Pasolini's final fuck-you to the world that had named his heartfelt, poetic work, and his very nature as an artist, an abomination. It names and condemns the reflexive double-edge of cinema, and truly embodies the word horror!

"Agnosticism is not a state in which the mind of an intelligent being can permanently rest. It is essentially a condition of suspense—a confession of ignorance—an abdication of thought on the highest subjects. Generally, however, under the surface of professed Agnosticism, there will be found some more or less positive opinions about the origin and nature of things all of them agreeing in this, that they negate the belief in God. It is not, in the nature of things, possible for the mind to remain persistently in this neutral, passive attitude. It will press on perforce to one or other of the views which present themselves as alternatives—either to Theism, or to Materialism and dogmatic Atheism." —James Orr, The Christian View of God and the Word

The novel is about Sam (16), a skateboarder who lives with his 32-year-old mother. Sam seeks advice on life from Tony Hawk’s poster on his wall which talks back to him. Sam meets a girl called Alicia, who is a year older than he is, and the two begin dating and have sex and (predictably enough) conceive a child. The story is about his dealing with the fact he is soon to become a father, a teenage father. The interesting bit of the story: Tony Hawk's poster plays a great role in helping Sam shaping his mind, by zapping him into the future.

"Whoever invented skateboarding is a genius. There's only one skater, and his name's Tony Hawk. It doesn't matter if you don't know who he is, just trust me. Not only is Hawk the world's best skater, he's also good to talk to. So I talk to Tony Hawk, and Tony Hawk talks back. Because just when it seemed like everything had come together for me, I had to go and screw it all up. It only took five seconds. But all of me knew. One risk. One mistake and my life would never be the same. Hawk had a few things to say. And a few things to show me. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see your own future?"

Nick Hornby's Slam is very hilarious yet has a lot of moral values in it. It is such a page-turner, I just couldn't put the book down. *****

"I have chosen - as I believe we all must – someone who can represent me, someone who will do the work for me and present it in a way that I both understand and trust. (This is what politicians are supposed to do, but in the Reagan/George W. Bush era, the meaning of representation changed, from “I trust that guy to speak for me”, to “Hey! That guy’s just like me!” This alarming development is responsible for a great deal of damage, I fear.)"

Air halt. À propos Air. Wie schreibt Nick Hornby in „How to be good“ – „’Air’ […], die aus Frankreich kommen und hauptsächlich Instrumentals spielen, die klingen, als würde man sie am besten in Aufzügen hören“ (S. 241) Sehr poetisch, finde ich. Zu „How to be good“ kann ich noch etwas sagen. Aus „How to be good“ nämlich.

One’s real life is so often the life that one does not lead.

--Oscar Wilde, as quoted by JJ in A Long Way Down

A Long Way Down is a piece of contemporary fiction that opens on New Year’s Eve in a neighborhood of London. Four people have independently made their way to the roof of an apartment building with the intent to commit suicide.

The characters, in order of appearance, are:

Martin: in his mid-40s, a former morning television host whose career and marriage came to an abrupt end when he admitted to an affair with a minor. His life is now fodder for the tabloids; he assesses it as having “not enough regrets, and lot and lots of reasons to jump.”

Maureen: the eldest of the group, in her early 50s. Maureen had a one-night stand about 20 years ago, the result is her severely-disabled son, Matty, whose need for full-time care has allowed Maureen to build a wall around herself.

Jess: the youngest of the group, about age 18. Jess has an extreme case of adolescent rebellion coupled with extenuating troubles within the family structure at home.

JJ: The only American on the roof, JJ is in his early 30s. He has recently suffered a final break-up with his girlfriend and the dismantling of his band. Music is his life, and without it, he wonders how he’ll continue.

The novel is divided into three parts, clearing delineating major turning points – Part One ends as the four come down from the roof and make a pact to “not do anything” about their suicide plans until they meet again six weeks later on Valentine’s Day; Part Two ends back on the roof on Valentine’s Day. Have all four returned to the rooftop that evening? What does the future hold?

Hornby uses a series of honest first person narratives, with each character telling the story in turns. We have insight to the speaker’s thoughts as he or she comments on the events that unfold. Like witnesses to a traffic accident, each sees the situation from a different angle and thus offers a unique perspective and analysis.

Some examples of passages that resonated with me include:

Martin: To describe prison as the worst three months of one’s life is like describing a horrible car crash as the worst ten seconds. It sounds logical and neat; it sound truthful. But it’s not, because the worst time is afterward, when you wake up in hospital and learn that your wife is dead, or you’ve had your legs amputated, and that therefore the worst has just begun.

Maureen: If you spend day and night looking after a sick child, there’s very little room for sin, and I hadn’t done anything worth confessing for donkey’s years. And I went from that, to sinning so terribly that I couldn’t even talk to the priest, because I was going to go on sinning and sinning until the day I died, when I would commit the biggest sin of all…And why is it the biggest sin of all? All your life you’re told that you’ll be going to this marvelous place when you pass son. And the one thing you can do to get you there a bit quicker is something that stops you getting there at all …

Jess: I suffer from a failure of imagination…telling me I can do anything I want is like pulling the plug out of the bath and then telling the water it can go anywhere it wants. Try it, and see what happens.

JJ: Once you stop pretending that everything’s shi**y and you can’t wait to get out of it…then it gets more painful, not less. Telling yourself that life is sh** is like an anesthetic, and when you stop taking the Advil, then you really can tell how much it hurts, and where, and it’s not like that kind of pain does anyone a whole lot of good.

It’s a bit awkward to say that I enjoyed a novel about four people whose intent at the opening was to kill themselves, but, I truly enjoyed the novel! Simply put, this book isn’t so much about ending one’s life as it is about living it.

Award-winning author Nick Hornby has published several novels, a memoir, and a collection of short stories. More information about Hornby and his books, including the bestsellers High Fidelity and About a Boy can be found at his website. Hornby shares a brief essay about the writing process and some background for A Long Way Down at the Penguin website.
