Ok, so Bowl Court is gone and the 24hour security put in there since our eviction have apparently stolen our video projector, media player, tools, cash and other valuables. Nether-the-less, we are not defeated and have retreated back to the rampART to regroup. Last saturday the place was packed for the Music & Lights benefit party and this thursday (assuming we can borrow a projector) we've got a film night
organised....

> > THURSDAY 21ST

Climate camp film night, debrief and discussion

Loads of short films about this years climate camp (including a never seen before exclusive première) and stuff from some of the other camps that have taken place around the world - along with a chance for people who attended to share their experiences. Bring photos/video to screen if you have any.

Starts 8pm. Free

15 rampart street, london E1 2LA

> > MONDAY MEETINGS

It should be obvious... the weekly social centre organising meetings are now taking place at rampART again. 7pm every monday. If you have a proposal or would like to get involved in the space, please come
along.

>> >> ELSEWHERE

> > BOOK LAUNCH & TALK - Haiti, Aristide and the Politics of Containment

Author Peter Hallward will be discussing how Haiti, once the most lucrative European colony in the Caribbean, has become one of the most divided and impoverished countries in the world.

In the late 1980s, a remarkable popular mobilisation known as Lavalas, or 'the flood', sought to liberate the island from decades of US-backed dictatorial rule. After winning a landslide election victory, in 1991 the Lavalas government, led by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was overthrown by a bloody military coup.
Peter's latest book 'Damming the Flood', analyses how and why Aristide's enemies in Haiti, the US and France instigated a second coup in 2004 to remove Aristide and Lavalas for good.

The elaborate international campaign to contain, discredit and then overthrow Lavalas at the start of the twenty-first century was perhaps the most successful act of imperial sabotage since the end of the Cold
War. Its execution and its impact provide important lessons for those interested in today's political struggles in Latin America and the rest of the post-colonial world.

"This riveting and deeply-informed account should be carefully read by those who recognise that Haiti's tragic history is a microcosm of imperial savagery and heroic resistance which, as Hallward argues, will continue to shape Haiti's political future if its people are granted the opportunity to take their fate into their own hands. " – Noam Chomsky

> > FILM SCREENING -Territorio Pacificado, (Kanal B, Germany 2006, 77 min)

On February 21, 2005, Colombian army units attacked two hamlets in the San José community in North-western Colombia. The soldiers brutally killed six people including two children and a baby. Those murdered were members of the peace community San José de Apartadó. In 1997 the farmers had decided to declare neutrality and to refrain from cooperation with any of the armed groups in the war-torn Urabá region – be it the state, the paramilitaries, or the guerrilla.

After decades of displacement the community hoped that neutrality would allow them to stay on their land. In the face of continuing attacks, the people hold on to their project which they call 'el proceso'. El proceso stands for the search for political alternatives in a conflict profiting few and victimising many. This film documents their struggle.

The film will be presented by Tobias Hering, co-author and co-editor of 'Territorio Pacificado', and member of the Berlin-based independent media collective Kanal B.

> > Anti-Olympic Street Party

* 1pm Sunday 24th August in Shoreditch Park *

Join us for a protest pic-nic at Shoreditch Festival ( http://www.shoreditchfestival.org.uk/sunday24.html ) , where Hackney Council will be marking the official handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London at 2.30pm. This will take the form of a 1948-themed street party: the last time the Games were in London.

Bring banners, sports equipment and food to share and consider dressing accordingly.

Let the Games begin!

In four years the Olympic games will be held in London: no reason to celebrate.

The 2012 Games will contribute to privatisation, inequality and surveillance in our city. It will convert large areas of public space into private ground, most of it compulsorily purchased. The Games rely on volunteers working for no wages as well as workers in conditions that will get worse as 2012 approaches. Already we have seen local businesses closed down, allotment-users, travellers and tenants evicted and amateur football pitches are getting destroyed (not to mention everything else) for what are apparently 'everyone's' Games.

> > Earth First! Summer Gathering

Ecological Direct Action without Compromise - 27 Aug - 1 Sept 2008, Norfolk

Earth First is a loose network of people, groups and campaigns coming together for ecological direct action. Join us for 5 days of workshops, networking and planning actions.

For more info about the gathering check out our website or email us at summergathering _AT_ earthfirst.org.uk (though we won't be able to answer your emails after 21 August, as we'll be on site setting up)

The gathering this year will be held at Woolseybridge Farm - a lovely site in Norfolk with lots of trees and a little stream. It's approximately 1.5 miles NNE of Diss. Diss has regular train services and a wholefood shop. The Grid Reference of the site is TM130819. The post code is IP22 5SY.

The site is easily accessible by public transport, you can get the train either to Diss or Norwich and then catch the bus route no 1 (Simmonds) from Diss to Norwich or vice versa - this route goes right past the site and we'll be asking the local bus company if they will stop right outside the site on request. Or you could walk or cycle - it's only 1.5miles away from Diss train station. Please come by public
transport if at all possible! .
We will run pick-ups from the train station for anybody who can't use the bus service or for larger groups of people. If you need a lift please let us know well in advance (and not in the middle of the night, when you're at a train station somewhere!). Ring the Gathering mobile on 07789 331857.

For more info on travel, including a map and bus times, check out http://earthfirstgathering.org.uk/2008/where.html

You can advertise your Scotland business or academic event for free on the website and the newsletter helps to promote a few of those businesses directly. Watching the traffic flow to the site after sending out the newsletter is always interesting - a sharp attack as people click and then a slow decay as people get to their email over 2 days. And then the residual traffic remains a wee bit higher than it did before.

I have written only a couple of what are defined as “white papers” and that was back whe

I have written only a couple of what are defined as "white papers" and that was back when I worked in-house as a copywriter/editor. I don't think at the time I really understood what my possibilities were from a marketing perspective, so I'm on a mission to find out how white papers could be leveraged as a marketing tool.

But while I'm at it, what other copy vehicles may be or have been utilized as marketing vehicles?

Really the key to a really good copywriting marketing strategy may be to find the textual medium that is a still ripe niche. And I'm not sure there exists any "virgin" marketing content, but some are less overrun than others. Even classified ads have been used as effective marketing vehicles.

Blogs are being used as communication tools by growing numbers of businesses, but as far as I can tell many continue to languish without regular attention or commitment to their real marketing potential. Here's a list of Fortune 500 companies with blogs. I clicked on quite a few--many are not updated regularly and only a few are really going strong. This company blog author is a cartoon character. Here's a great post on building business blogs, just what this copywriter needed to hear.

Clearly the uses to which email may be put are well known and direct marketers continue to refine their lead generation and spam filter evasion tactics. I've actually added more than a few crazy good direct marketing emails to my swipe file. A few of them are just really well done.

Newsletters--yet another opportune vehicle for a few reasons: up front build an avid and loyal audience, get your message across and build a solid contact/lead list. Most good copywriter/marketers use them as a direct lead in to more bankable information vehicles, including seminars, workshops and specialty bootcamps. Readers live for free tips, tricks and strategies and newsletters offer the right medium.

Wikipedia--the big vehicle in cyberspace--is not the fertile ground it once was. In fact this online territory offers little opportunity for copywriters looking to write for biz markets. Businesses and corporate notables that do manage to carve out a wikipedia page are also wide open for totally unbiased editing and less than desirable PR.

Welcome to Mrs. Densmore's World Geography class!

I am so excited to have you or your student in my class this year! This blog has a couple of different purposes. I use it every Friday to email out a weekly update, which is mostly for parents. In class we will use it as a place to have discussions and where I can read your thoughts on some class activities we will do. As I get to know each class better, I will introduce the blog and how we use it (no last names, for example) in class. If you have already found this, feel free to leave me a comment!

Stay tuned....

[We continue hearing from Pr. Heath Curtis-see July for the previous section-on what has been inherited from those who have gone before us in the Church. As always, the invitation stands for you to discuss with me any questions or thoughts.]

"Beyond Tradition for Tradition's Sake"

Reverence vs. Hey Jesus, Pull My Finger

We are not merely traditionalists for tradition's sake - although as I have just narrated, that is not a bad thing: keeping the 4th Commandment is never a bad thing. Rather, those of us who advocate upholding the description of the churches of the Augsburg Confession as churches which adhere to the traditional

liturgical forms do so because we find these forms objectively more excellent, appropriate, and praise worthy than modern neo-Evangelical forms [which are often called "contemporary worship"]. In the first place, the traditional liturgical forms and ceremonies encourage reverence and awe. Our age and culture does not do reverence well. For us, nothing is sacred. Everything that is not humorous, sarcastic, or comfortable is stodgy, stilted, and unauthentic. This seems a far cry from the Biblical witness. You can't read your way through the Torah [Genesis-Deuteronomy] or the Gospels without constantly running into people kneeling, crying out in fear of the Divine Presence, and clearing temples of worshipless activity. The traditional liturgical forms embody this sort of serious reverence - where our age has given us the coffee shop church: the house of the Lord has literally been turned into an emporium and the altar of our Lord's Presence has been pushed to the side to make room for the band. These words from Pr. David Petersen eloquently describe the difference between a reverent approach to worship and the modern comfortable approach.

There are those among us who think the Gospel is best or most fully expressed as a casual, comfortable relationship with God. For them the resurrection of Jesus Christ means no fussiness, no solemnity, no seriousness, or formality. It is not enough that Jesus is your friend, He must be your bosom buddy. He is the kind of God you could go fishing with. It'd be okay if you hadn't showered and smelled like fish, if you wiped you nose on your sleeve. If you belched He'd laugh. He is the kind of God who likes greasy snack foods and licks His fingers. It is not really the Gospel for these people unless you can say: "Hey, Jesus, pull my finger." For them He is the kind of God you can tease. He understands. ... The angels do tell the believers to not be afraid. We are to come to God as dear children to their dear Father, trusting that He will not despise us nor grow angry with us even at our selfish and childish requests, but rather that He loves to hear our prayers. Jesus tells the disciples that they are not merely His servants but also His friends. But at the same time He is the Lord and Ruler of the Universe and should at least be given the respect we reserve for polite company. Being respectful of God, listening while He is talking, wearing your finest clothing, being serious, quiet, and attentive while He expresses His love for you and presents you with His gifts, is a confession of who you believe He is and what you believe He is doing. Joy need not always be mindless, fleshly pleasure. Joy can also be sober. In fact, the deepest joy is. There is time for trumpets and timpani, and there is a time to pray in silence. But there is never a time to forget who God is or that the Lion of Judah still has claws. Do not be scared. Do not be terrified. For your heavenly Father loves you in Jesus Christ. You are precious to Him and in Him you are safe. At the same time do not dismiss fear altogether. For the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. You are not His equal. Those who know His love respond in reverence, even as did Isaiah in the Temple, Peter, James, and John at the Transfiguration, and St. Mary at the annunciation. The Lord has not given you a playmate out of the Virgin's womb. He has given you a Savior. (http://redeemerfortwayne.org/blog.php?msg=1777)

Pastor Petersen would no doubt second the quip from CS Lewis' Narnia series: He's not a tame lion. Reverence in general begins here: acknowledging the holiness of God and our own unworthiness to be in his presence.

The Real Presence of God

And make no mistake: in the Divine Service we are in the Real Presence of God. For by his gracious invitation we are called to the Lord's altar to receive Him in his Body and Blood. Jesus is really there. He really is. This is the point of departure for the entire traditional Divine Service (Mass): the bodily and bloodily presence of Christ. [We should then ask ourselves:] How should I comport myself in his presence? How shall I prepare to receive him? How shall I honor him?

[The answers are given by what the Body of Christ does in the traditional form of the liturgy as we have it in Divine Service, Setting III of Lutheran Service Book [TLH p. 15]. See also the booklet on the liturgy that is available on the table outside the sanctuary. If you would like to see what Pr. Curtis has written on the liturgy, just ask.]

[...]

[T]he Historic Liturgy [has been] honed and perfected by all ages of Christians from the Apostles on down. Did it fall from heaven? No - but it is soaked in the Words of Heaven as found in the Scriptures. Is it unchanging and unchangeable? No - but it is no one man's to change willy nilly. It belongs to the Church and she changes it over time, slowly at a snail's pace as befits a Woman who is several thousand years old. It is self-contained and is its own culture. It does not adapt to cultures but absorbs them, takes on what is best and spits out the rest. Resistance is futile: you will be assimilated. And the only thing sadder than not knowing of this Historic Liturgy and its meaning is knowing of it and rejecting it for what you made up on Monday afternoon (the latter would seem to contain not a small measure of pride as well).

[Next month we will consider the ceremonies of the Lutheran service. Pastor Winterstein]

*St. Augustine said, as Bishop of Hippo in North Africa, "For you I am a bishop [overseer]; but with you I am a Christian."

We’ve all been there, you discover something new on the Internet and want to sign up to a site

We've all been there, you discover something new on the Internet and want to sign up to a site's email newsletter to stay informed and up to date. You click on the sign link or even worse input your email address into a small box and press enter. You're now entering into a long a tedious journey where you'll be forced to submit a mass of personal details, right down to your second cousin's shoe size. Then, even then there's no guarantee that you'll receive what you're expecting.

I was taught to make it easy as possible for people to sign up for news and updates and I'm passionate about making it happen. The way I see it, if I let my customers trip and stumble on the way into my shop, they may never get inside and they're probably unlikely to come back again.

Here's a few obvious tips, I'll more to this post as they come to me:

First and foremost, decide what information you really need from your customers when they sign up. You'll probably need less than you think - if you're selling a product or service you'll probably pick up genuinely useful later on when they buy from you. Therefore, just the basic name and email address might suffice.

Make the sign up as short as possible - customers will soon get bored. If you have to make it long then at least let them know that they'll be with you a while - display a progress bar.

Don't let customers get distracted - don't try to sell products along the way, sign up pages are no place for banner ads.

Don't forget a subscription successful and unsuccessful page, it's like a goods receipt - it makes you feel comfortable that the service has been delivered.

Test your subscription form on all the major browsers and platforms to ensure it will work for everyone.

Include a link to an example of your service, customers like to try before they buy.

My other blog was about mass amounts of connections and status on social networks like linkedin.
Some more food for thought is what do people actually do with their 30.000+ contacts? The majority is sending me a "personalised" e-mail where the only thing personal is that the mail merger managed to correctly put my first name after the salutation. Many of those e-mails I receive are distributed to upto 30.000 "direct contacts". Those contacts who, my guesstimate being, for 95% never spoke more to than the standard reply after connecting with the sender. So are we talking about spam here? I surely never asked to be included in the first email batch that I got! Many offer an unsubsribe link, meaning it can be seen as a newsletter without doubt.
Are we seeing a new advertisement channel on the rise here where by connecting to an "open networker" you actually subscribe yourself to an add-generator?

The minister told the Congregation he had both good and bad news.

First, the church required money to fix the leaking roof. The congregation groaned.
He then dished out the good news; there was enough money to cover repairs. A huge sigh of
relief escaped from the congregation.
“The final piece of bad news,” said the minister, “is that the money is still in your pockets.”
We know this does not apply to us and many people have given very generously, however, our
pledges for the building project are 50% behind what was promised. We know that the financial
situation has altered for many, but if you can help it would be appreciated.

Are you interested in internet marketing? Have you started to research the vast number of internet

Are you interested in internet marketing? Have you started to research the vast number of internet marketers online? A large number of these so-called gurus claim to be the real thing. There are some highly respectful internet marketers online but there are also some dishonest marketers who will use deceitful tricks in order to get your money.

When you are looking for an honest and decent internet marketing guru, you need to find one who provides valuable and useful information that can help you.

Here is the biggest secret to finding the best internet marketer and guru - "Word Of Mouth". You need to do your research online and see how many people are talking about whatever guru you want to follow. For example, Internet Marketing Guru Mike Filsaime is mentioned throughout the internet. There are a large number of people who are giving Filsaime positive Word of Mouth. Consequently, when Mike does a product launch for a new product, he has a huge number of people promoting and buying his product.

How about Internet Marketing Guru Ed Dale? He has become very well known for his "Thirty Day Challenge" where he provides valuable information for FREE. Eric Holmlund (Eric's Tips) is another internet marketing guru who is providing great information for FREE in his video series. Eric's video series teaches you step-by-step how to be successful online. It is refreshing to find Dale and Holmlund because they aren't pushing their products on you. They are concerned about sharing their knowledge with others.

There is another internet marketing guru who needs to be mentioned. His name is Jeff Walker (Product Launch Formula) and he has developed a very positive reputation online for providing a high-quality product. When you talk about word of mouth, Walker's video testimonials from his customers have added to his positive reputation. His customers speak very highly of Jeff Walker and his product.

As you can see, there are some great internet marketers online. Another good indication for finding the perfect internet marketer and guru is to take a look at the information they release for free. This will say a lot for their character.

When you are doing your research to find the best internet guru, use caution. There are a large number of dishonest marketers online who only want to take your money.

If you find a potential guru that you might want to follow, get on their mailing list. Take a look at the quality of emails they send you. If they send you emails almost every day trying to promote their products or someone else's products, this should send up a red flag. The honest and reputable gurus don't need to email you every day just in order to make a sale.

After you choose a particular guru, pick the best product that works for you. They might have a number of products that they are selling but you don't need to purchase all of them. Your main focus is to make money. Don't go into debt in the process.

You should try to pick between 3-5 internet gurus that you will follow and sign up for their mailing lists and newsletters. If you pick more than 5 gurus, you will have a tendency to get brain overload and this might discourage you from pursuing internet marketing.

Do your homework! Take a look at word of mouth from other people and be careful when you pull out your credit card to make a purchase.

Need some service hours for your next rank? Walking the Trash Walk is a fun way to earn time. We will meet at the John Deere Implement building at 6:30, August 25, and will walk the highway from mileage marker 175 to 177. Make sure you bring gloves and wear your red T-shirts.

Arts in the Park will be September 6 (4pm-6pm) and September 7 (6am-9am and 5pm-7pm). This is a great fundraiser for the boys. The boys will help vendors carry and set-up their art displays to earn “tip” money. Make sure you wear your red T-shirt. If you have a wagon or dolly, bring it. Sign-up sheet and information can be obtained from Corene Richards.

Our Fall Court of Honor/pot luck will be held at Whispering Cedars on September 23, 6:30. Each family needs to bring a main dish, side dish, drink, and table service. The church hall has been reserved in case of bad weather.

Eighty-two merit badges were earned at summer Camp this year at the Spanish Peaks near Walsenburg, Colorado.

SUMMER HIGH ADVENTURE TRIP

The fresh mountain air, crystal clear lakes, and roller coaster downward views were all experienced on this summer’s high adventure trip to the Rawah Wilderness Area in Colorado. Weather fluctuated from 40 degrees to 80 degrees with the troop sleeping near snow. Sounds of elk serenaded the group to sleep while the day’s visions of bighorn sheep and moose replayed in their dreams. Meals of trout, freshly caught, fed the group. After a grueling upward hike, asked if one would ever do it again, the answer was a quick, “Never!” But after the week, the reply was, “Yes! I will!” Ah….the memory is there to stay with prospects of many more to come.

WANTED---PARENT’S PARTICIPATION

Just a reminder that we LOVE parents and the boys LOVE to have their parents with them!! We would like to have a parent help with at least two activities a year or find someone to take their place. Without parents’ involvement, activities cannot take place—but the primary reason for volunteering and helping out, is the chance to be involved with your son. It’s an awesome experience being with him as he “smokes” you running up the wilderness trail, or when he catches the “bigger” fish, or tells the scarier ghost story at the camp fire. Those are memories that can never be replaced. Find the time and call Dawn Grothe to volunteer. Her number: 532-4992, email: grothe5@charter.net.

TIME TO RETURN ALL TENTS

It’s time to return any and all tents that have been used. If you have one sitting in your garage, now’s the time to return it at the up-coming scout meeting.

CHANCE FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS

Jefferson Elementary has a Butterfly Garden that needs some help in maintaining it. If you need some service hours and would like to help with the garden, send an email to Michelle Strickland at mstrickland@nppsd.org.

Terry Wren has put together a blog for the troop. It’s a place for updates, questions, news, and a chance to talk to each other.
With our youngest son, Ryan, earning his Eagle and turning 18, we will be “retiring” and this will be our last newsletter. Terry Wren will be taking over the newsletter. We have spent a wonderful 19 years in Scouting and treasure those memories of and with our three sons and the numerous other boys we came to know and love. We know that only good times await those who will also risk the adventure and excitement of the Scouting trail.
