WASHINGTON — Jovita Carranza, acting administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), announced during a tour of Iowa July 1 that disaster victims now have increased benefits, including immediate access to loans of up to $14,000 without collateral and a $500,000 increase in the disaster loan cap to businesses.

The changes, which were recently signed into law under the Small Business Disaster Response and Loan Improvement Act of the 2008 Farm Bill, have officially been implemented by the SBA.

The enhanced benefits under SBA's Disaster Assistance program, all of which are retroactive to cover loans approved in disasters declared on or after May 22, 2008, include:

o Increased Loan Limits: Eligible borrowers may take out a $14,000 loan without collateral, up from the previous $10,000 unsecured loan limit.

o Increased Disaster Loan Amounts: The disaster loan cap for businesses has increased from $1.5 million to $2 million. The 20% mitigation measure formula has changed from total loan eligibility to total loss eligibility.

o Economic Injury Disaster Loans to Nonprofits: SBA's Economic Injury Disaster Loan program now includes private, non-profit organizations of all sizes.

o Net Earnings Clauses Prohibited: Borrowers are not required to make a supplemental payment for the first five years after repayment begins.

I for one never really realized how much work actually goes into getting a business started. Looking in from the outside, people made it seem so easy. Not even up and running, just starting the wheels in motion has been a good deal of work. I am currently working on my business plan. For some reason I believed the stupid notion that as long as I knew what it is I wanted to do, in my head, there was no need for me to put it down on paper; create a business plan. Some one actually told me that though. That’s the crazy part. I didn’t just make that up in my own little head. Good thing I am surrounded with people who actually want to see me succeed and they told me the truth. No matter what kind of business you want to start or get involved with, from what I have learned, your best plan is to start with a business plan. For me, being able to put my ideas down on paper, will give me the space needed to tweak the numbers and ideas as need be. This business plan thing is a difficult thing though. Don’t let anyone tell you that it is a “piece of cake” cause it is not. It is really time consuming and a lot of research. I have been researching for a good while now and I am no where closed to being done. You would never guess the information you need to know in order to have a good business plan. You need to know you competition (of course), market share information, target groups, area statistics such as population and demographics. Then you have to break those up by race, income, religion, and gender. WHY!!!

Now you would think being that I technically only want to throw upscale parties for a living, I wouldn’t really need to do any of this business planning stuff. But I do. I really do. And once I found out the whys behind doing it, it all made sense and became clear. In order to determine if your business will be successful, you have to do the math. In order to do the math and do it correctly, you have to do the research, no matter how many hours it may take, it has to get done. And when it comes down to it, the research is the easier part of it all. Putting it together is a whole other story…which I haven’t gotten to yet, but so I have been told. I honestly just wished that my business plan would just magically appear….who am I kidding?

When I posted my first entry to this blog, someone asked me, “Why do you want to start this type of business with the way the economy is?” That question really made me stop and think. Why would I want to do this with things not looking so bright for the average American? So I thought about it.

Who doesn’t want to be entertained? Who doesn’t want a night out where they could escape from all their worries of the everyday life? Who doesn’t want to have a good night out, even if once a month, with their girls or their boys? Who wouldn’t want to see the favorite artist perform in a not so crowded environment? Who couldn’t enjoy a good a laugh and an opportunity to make new friends? If you can tell me someone that these don’t apply to, I will rethink it. But I honestly don’t think that there is anyone out there who wouldn’t want this.

And yes I know money may be tight for a lot of us, but if you think about it, you end up spending money to be entertained every week anyway. You go to the movies, eat out, have drinks w/ the girls, go to the club, or maybe just go for a drive. Either which way you look at it, you are spending money.

So why not spend a little more and get what you pay for and exactly what you want; great entertainment, dinner, dancing, and good company all in one. You really can’t beat that, now can you?

So I will continue on my journey to improve the nightlife in Orlando, no matter how much work I have to put into it. From the comments that I have gotten so far, this is really needed. And I am not going to get everyone all excited about what’s to come, and not go thru with it. That would suck for all of us. So it may be some time before I have my first event but make sure to stay tuned because it’s coming. Just make sure that you are there because you would want to miss it.

12 Reasons for Investing in a Franchise

There are some obvious advantages in investing in a franchise, the most important being that you wil

There are some obvious advantages in investing in a franchise, the most important being that you will be buying into a tried and tested business concept. It may more expensive, (although there are some low cost franchise oppotunities out there), than starting your own business in the same sort of market but it does bring with it a recognised established brand image. It is estimated that whilst only one in five new-start businesses will still be trading after five years, some 90% of franchise operations will have succeeded.

There are numerous benefits in investing in a franchise some of which are:

You will have the opportunity to purchase a business concept that has already been tried and tested in the market.

The risks of setting up a franchised business are substantially reduced when compared to establishing a new business in the same market.

A franchise will provide a brand image that the public will recognise.

Business premises will all comply with an established interior and exterior design to assist with brand promotion.

Specifications for the equipment required by the franchise will be clearly identified from the outset.

Publicity and ongoing marketing can be arranged by the franchisor as part of the contractual agreement.

Comprehensive training in all aspects of running the business will be given to you by the franchisor, both initially and on an ongoing basis as methods are improved.

The 'operations manual' received as part of the franchise will give standardised procedures for accounting, sales, and stock control.

The franchisor may be able to provide you with better terms for the centralised bulk purchase of raw materials or goods used by the franchise.

As the franchisee, you should benefit from the franchisor's ongoing research and development undertaken to improve the franchised product or service.

Networking with other franchisees will provide both you and the franchisor with opportunities for review and improvement of the operating procedures.

The franchise should have a clearly defined geographical area within which the rights of the franchise are protected from other franchises from the same franchisor.

The final advantage of investing franchise opportunities, as opposed to starting your own business, relates to raising funding for the venture. Gaining finance to purchase a franchise, (6 common costs) is generally easier than gaining finance to start a new business. The reason for this is that the franchisor will be better able to provide estimates of the likely sales and costs, thereby giving a more accurate prediction of profit levels.

Not sure where to look try this list of top 500 franchises. Also here's a handy Introduction to Franchising PDF to print off and read to bring you up to speed with the ways of franchising.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were warning that sub-6% personal loans could soon be a thing of the past. Now it looks like we’ve seen the end of those below 7% as well.

According to Moneyfacts, two years ago the lowest interest rate you get on a £10,000 personal loan was 5.6%. This time last year it had risen to 6.1%. As of today though, the lowest rate you can get is 7.2% from the AA.

Why have rates risen?

This is obviously not great news and you won’t be surprised to hear that the infamous credit crunch is behind the rise. There is another factor at work here though and that’s the ongoing onslaught against the high cost of payment protection insurance sold alongside personal loans.

There’s no readily available data on how sales of this product have fared over the last couple of years but I suspect they may have fallen quite significantly. Considering that it’s payment protection insurance and not loan interest where most of the profits are made on personal loans, it’s perhaps surprising that loan rates haven’t risen by more than they actually have.

Well, for starters I am now almost back to normal, health-wise. Every now and again I have a dip d

Well, for starters I am now almost back to normal, health-wise. Every now and again I have a dip day, but I guess that's normal even for the 100% healthy. I no longer have Glandular Fever, but picked up some bacteria (which is apparently normal in the healing cycle), but am almost over that as well.

As a result of the lack of physical action over the past 5 months, and the added element of having quit smoking, I've picked up a good few kg's which I now need to work off. I mentioned a while back that I started T'ai Chi, and I've continued with that. I'm really enjoying it, because it gives me the throw back to my Kung Fu days, without the physical stress and trauma that goes with the training. I've also taken up Yoga, which I'm doing twice a week. I'm thinking that I probably need one more day of some exercise, so I'll look around and see what else appeals to me.

Then, in terms of the business side of things, I am in the throws of registering a Pty Ltd company, called The Journey Coach (Pty) Ltd. The registration will hopefully go through mid-July and I can then kick off properly. There is still a lot to do, including sorting out bank accounts, legal agreements, and the like. I won't bore you with the details, but I've already had a shocking experience with attorneys, so I'm a bit 'once bitten twice shy' already. Anyway, I've still got two weeks and some change to go to get everything done.

Then, in terms of the renovations, I've also had a torrid time trying to get that sorted out. The last builder that I found quoted me via SMS, but noted a few exclusions which I wouldn't accept, like rubble removal. One week later, the fully inclusive quote was R100 000 higher!! I am now onto about the 6th builder, and I think finally I have found someone who possesses the kind of the ethics that I am seeking. Obviousy, things change, but I'll keep you posted on how we go here. I am finally hoping to start building in a week or two, as I would like some office space outside of my house.

The book is slowing coming along. I've done the odd bit of writing, but nothing really to celebrate as yet. I'm hoping that persistence pays here, and that it will all just come together soon.

One thing that I am really celebrating is my discovery of Facebook. I have reconnected with people that I last saw 20 years ago, and that is just fantastic. I had coffee with Stanley about two week's ago now, and that was just amazing, and tomorrow, I'm meeting up with two girlfriends that I haven't seen for the same amount of time. It's just been awesome to have the technology to find long lost friends, but also from my side to have the time to invest in finding them and physically reconnecting. There is no ways that I would be doing this if I was still pulling my 12 hour shifts in the corporate world!

I'll keep you posted a bit more frequently, now that I am starting to feel better. Take care till then.

It isn't easy being green.

It also isn't easy being a young entrepreneur.

Sawyer Sparks, a junior majoring in agricultural economics at Purdue University, sees a bright future in producing biofuel and livestock feed from sunflowers. But the 21-year-old also is learning that funding his venture, Greene BioFuels, is a tough task.

Greene BioFuels -- for now based at the small "hobby" farm where Sparks grew up in Greene County -- produces biodiesel by squeezing oil from sunflower seeds and processing it into fuel. The business also sells the meal leftover from the oil-extraction process as livestock feed.

"We built a building in my backyard," said Sparks, who runs the startup with fellow Purdue student Tyler Trent. "We figured we could operate and put all of the money back into the business."

This year, Greene BioFuels has contracted with three farmers in Indiana and Illinois to grow more than 500 acres of sunflowers. That's up from just 20 acres last year.

The business hopes to produce 60,000 gallons of biodiesel and 500 tons of livestock feed. Indiana is known for corn and soybeans, but Sparks said he picked sunflowers because of the seeds' high oil content.

Sparks said he plans to keep his biodiesel priced about $1 a gallon lower than regular diesel.

This business, though, is not all about feed and fuel.

Offerings is an introduction to my Blog, and the eCommerce website which is currently under construction, as of this date. I am integrating the two, and the reasons why, are to follow. But, let me Welcome you to my Weblog...Global Eye Blog, and invite you to open yourselves up to an adventure.

Global Eye is created to bring to light, to a variety of World issues, to fundraise ($)for them and thus create a contribution directly from my eCommerce site. I will donate a portion of money that is made from my shop (in sales), to the Charity of your choosing, every month. Or my choosing, which ever comes first. I am prone to be partial to the issues of Domestic Violence, animal abuse and Healthcare. Poverty worldwide concerns me greatly, as well. So, I'll be blogging alongside you for causes that are near and dear to me.

To me, having an eCommerce website is empty without a purpose, or a theme. And, of course I will enjoy having my own business, but I would enjoy it even more, when I, myself, am "on purpose", doing something which is meaningful. Doing something which is right, and not all about me and my gain.

People in my life have been very good to me...though there was a time when life was very brutal for me...I have had the WONDERFUL and GLORIOUS opportunity to see just how very loving, caring and generous people can be, it has helped to heal my soul...and THIS, is my way of giving back. Or one of the many ways, I can give back, more precisely.

Truth be told, I can't do this alone. This is a very large world, with lots of people who want to make public, various issues, such awareness itself, is worth the effort, alone. Where should we start? Domestic Violence? Global warming? Fuel? Animal abuse? Poverty? Dis-ease?

Obviously, there will be some people that will connect more than others, whether it hits home from experience, or just by virture of favoring a given area. Nevertheless, this is a platform being created of great variety, which inevitably will...plant seeds in our hearts...and erect bridges, and bring some hope. We can fund the builders, the creators, the healers of this world, and if not that, then, simply promote an important event.

I offer now, an open invitation, as my website is being set up, to ANYONE out there, who would like to blog on my site, to get your story out, or your loved one's, your passion for a worthy cause can be manifested in a concrete way by submitting it to me, and picking a legit cause for whom we can rally around.

Though this is a prelude to the opening of my Cyber-Market-Place, it would be great to have a couple of blogs ready to put up. Please be mindful this whole concept and enterprise is new for me, including the obtaining of search engines, but I am continuously on top of it, and this dream will be realized!

"Make it and they will come" - Field of Dreams

Thank you, I look forward to getting to know you.

This is really exciting!

To the future!!!

Summary: Small business loans will help a lot to solve the unemployment problem of India. Indian ban

Summary: Small business loans will help a lot to solve the unemployment problem of India. Indian banks are now offering these loans in both secured and unsecured form.

Availability of required fund is the life line when people start a new business venture. In a country like India where 60% of the total population falls in the age group of 20-45, the availability of required funds to start a new business has a significant value. The nineties saw the problematic unemployment phase. Although full employment is an illusion (because there will be voluntary unemployment), the problem of unemployment can be addressed to a greater extent by making the required funds available.

Increasing the level of self-employment is the utmost priority for the growth of Indian economy. The reason is simple. The public sector is witnessing decreasing employment generation capacity. The IT and other hi tech jobs are skill oriented. Heavy industries can not meet the employment generation demand. The nourishment of small entrepreneurs and business house suit the purpose.

It’s a tough decision to start your own business, with no money in the pocket and no one to he

It's a tough decision to start your own business, with no money in the pocket and no one to help you. I did a lot of researched before I started, and that just scared me more and more. If someone told me 4 years ago that my business would become so successful today, I would simply laugh.

I can still remember my first job, it was for a friend of mine, who just finished a movie. He was a director, with no budget, but very ambitious. It was my first job, so how could I be picky? We met, I totally sold him on it, but inside I was so scared. I still remember the day my friend sent me the links to the reference sites, the sites he liked, and my jaw dropped to the ground. I thought to myself: "How do you do that? I didn't see that in the Bibles."

My instinct was to give him his $500 back and forget about starting a business...it wasn't too late. But I had what's called "pride". And I'm a survivor and not a quitter, so I buried myself in Flash & Dreamweaver Bible for weeks. With my persistence I ended up designing a site, but it was far from beautiful, but a site I will always remember. That site made me hungry for knowledge, I wanted to learn and become really good at it. Thus the computer nerd was born. :-)

I still have so much to learn, and I'm learning everyday, but I'm not able to apply my knowledge to something I absolutely love to do. I have since helped quite a few of my friends to start their own businesses, not necessarily web design, but other businesses. My outlook is this...you have to take the step in order to discover where it will lead you. It always brings me back to - "Leap and the net will appear."

To be continued...

I'm somewhat new to Wordpress, even thought I have created blogs for some of my clients. I started designing websites in 1998. My first site looked like something out of a web nightmare, I wish I kept it. My ex-husband, who basically got me hooked on computers, called me about two years ago, after seeing what my company does now, and his words were: "Honey, wow, you really did take this seriously. I never thought you had it in you." I went to school, and bought a lot of books, designers know the books I'm talking about, the bibles we call it. I read and read and did tutorial after tutorial. In 2003 I leaped...you know that quote: "Leap and the net will appear." Oh my, was I terrified to start my own business, I wasn't even well versed in some areas, like programming/scripting, that was so foreign to me. But guess what the net did appear.

Given we are in the so-called “creative awards” season I’d like to reflect on the notion of competition in our business. Hunting for awards is one of the ways we compete against each other. But the competition for new business is perhaps more grueling and, given one needs clients to make award-winning work, even more crucial to an agency’s livelihood.

In fact, I was so intrigued by the pursuit of new business, I actually wrote a book about it. The working title of that unpublished manuscript is “Fever Pitch” and it’s all about the pitching process and what it feels like to an agency and the people in it. I continue to be fascinated by rivalry between agencies, and the way in which we “play off” for a given client’s business.

The parallel to professional sports is both eerie and telling. Agencies are truly like ball clubs. We have coaches, star players, win-loss records, and even trade press following our progress.

Think about the competitive landscape in North America. Big cities (New York, Chicago, LA) have big agencies: JWT, Leo Burnett, DraftFCB as well as newer upstarts like my club, Euro RSCG. Smaller markets field some of the most competitive newcomers (relatively speaking), such as CP&B out of Miami and now Boulder. Or Fallon in Minneapolis. The metaphor gets better the more you play with it. For instance does not BBDO feel a lot like the New York Yankees? They win. They have pedigreed coaching. Big stars. And a stellar record in terms of new business and creative awards. I look at Crispin as an expansion team that shocked the world, kind of like the Tampa Bay Devil Rays during their World Series run. They might not like being tagged “lovable losers” but doesn’t Chicago’s own Leo Burnett remind one of the Chicago Cubs? Despite endless near misses and could haves and should haves, LBCO keeps pushing along, remaining a popular team regardless. And what about Management? Is Martin Sorrel the Steinbrenner of our business…or the Bill Wirtz?

Which team does your agency remind you of? And would you want to hang their pennant on your bedroom wall?

All those chores - disking soil, planting tomatoes and contending with irrigation pipes that seem to leak faster than he can patch them - would be waiting for him the next day, cold or no cold. He may as well get an early start.

A new farm requires sacrifices he's willing to make now, hoping to someday turn his 92-acre plot of corn and vegetables into a ranch that supports his family of five.

"It's a big dream we have," says Sanchez, 41. "But it's a long way we have to walk."

Like the Sanchezes, people still start farming these days. That old-fashioned American dream still lives in the age of closures, corporate ranching and the global economy.

"More people are getting into farming," says Clayton Burrows of the Washington State University Small Farms Program.

Agricultural lenders have noticed increased interest, too, as more growers try to tap into niches such as community-supported farms, organic produce and farmers' markets.

If it's true, it will mark a change in trend.

The 2007 U.S. Department of Agriculture farm census figures aren't due out until next February. But previous five-year figures show a decrease in the percentage of state farmers who have spent less than two years on their current farm. In 2002, it was only 3.3 percent - or 1,200 of 36,000 total - a 15-year low.

Some of the new efforts are paying off.

"Some of these smaller producers are finding a niche market that's providing them with a livelihood," said Wendy Knopp, assistant vice president of AgVision, a lending program for startup farmers at Northwest Farm Credit Services.

New farm families are driven by a "passion" for farming, Knopp says. They often grew up on a farm as children and want it back.

"It's that lifestyle they're looking for, Knopp says."

But romantic visions are not enough. Banks require detailed business plans that address short-term and long-term cash flow.

Programs abound to help. Knopp's firm has several.

Obviously you can purchase advertising space in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, etc. But l

Obviously you can purchase advertising space in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, etc. But lets face it, paying for ad space can get pricey, so let's look at a few cheaper ways to brand your business away from the computer, because shockingly, some people still don't spend their entire day on the Internet.

Stickers

Giving your customers free bonus items such as stickers upon purchases, is an excellent way to get your brand out there in the physical world. Making the sticker-design appealing to the customer will increase the chances that they will actually use it somewhere, and wherever they stick it, your brand will be there.

This is a great opportunity to advertise your website to people that would ordinarily probably not find you online on their own. It can be just as effective for brick and mortar businesses as well, but even you guys should have websites, so I'd worry about that first if you haven't already.

Flyers

Similar to stickers, flyers can provide a good advertising solution. However, they lack the longevity that a sticker can provide. Flyers can be torn down much easier than a sticker. You have to put them up yourself if you want them posted somewhere. If you just give them away to customers, they will most likely end up in the trash.

That said, posting them on bulletin boards, telephone poles, etc, can still attract some attention as long as they are up, and it shouldn't be too expensive to print some up. If you already have a printer, it will cost you next to nothing. I would suggest again, including your web address or instructions on how to find you online.

Bulletin Boards

Bulletin boards are good places to post a variety of marketing materials. Not only can you post flyers, but you can post business cards, stickers (without sticking them, leaving opportunity for someone else to take them and stick them somewhere else), etc.

Lots of places have bulleting boards. The first ones that come to mind are libraries and supermarkets, but if you pay attention while you're out and about, I bet you'll find plenty of them.

A Live Person

You can have an employee (or yourself) stand alongside the road and do some physical promotion. I've seen other businesses use this approach. Often times, they will be wearing funny costumes and holding signs. While this may not be the best way to keep your dignity, sometimes business is about making sacrifices (besides, if you're in a costume, nobody will recognize you anyway).

This can be an effective method particularly for brick and mortar business owners who have a store they can have somebody in front of or near, but I don't see why someone running a strictly online business couldn't go somewhere out in public and use the same strategy.

Attire

Another way to get some branding out of a live person that is a little less demeaning is letting them wear clothing with your brand on it. If you don't want to give away t-shirts to you customers, you could at least consider giving them to your employees. Whether you require them to wear a uniform or not, a t-shirt is a t-shirt, and they may even wear them out in public on their days off. At that point, you're not only getting free advertising, you're getting some work from your staff off the clock!

I hate to drive a point into the ground, but again, include your web address!

Auto

Many businesses will pay ordinary people to feature advertising on their vehicles. This is something you could look into if you're willing to put up the dough, but it would be cheaper to do it yourself.

This is another time when you are making a sacrifice, but you basically have a choice. Are you more concerned about your automobile's appearance or having another way to attract customers? Just think about how many people are going to see it on any given day while you are driving - to work, to the mall, to school, etc, etc, etc.

Step 1: Choose Your Business Name
Creating a name for your business is very important in establishin

Step 1: Choose Your Business Name

Creating a name for your business is very important in establishing your company identity. Be sure to research the name so that you’re not using a name already in use. This includes finding a domain name that is available. Try to pick a name that's easy to remember, and that relates to the product or service you're selling.

Step 2: Creating a Tagline

Create a tagline or phrase that helps people identify with what you do or what you sell. The tagline for my graphic design firm is; “. . .designing your image”. A tagline becomes a part of your business’s identity and is a permanent affiliation with your company and its image. The tagline can also be incorporated into your logo and used consistently in all of your marketing collateral, including your website. Be sure to also research the tagline to make sure it’s not already being used.

Step 3: Choose a Symbol or Image to create your logo

A logo establishes your business identity and creates brand recognition. Your logo should reflect what your business offers. It should be unique, eye-catching and easy to identify. You can create a logo on your own using various software tools, or you can hire a graphic designer to design it for you. If you design it yourself keep in mind the requirements for file types, colors, and formatting related to printing. Remember, your logo will be used on all of your marketing collateral in the future.

Hiring an experienced graphic designer to create your logo is a relatively affordable process. Shop around for a good price, and be sure to see some samples of prior work. Experienced designers know what printers are looking for when it comes to file format, number of colors used, and resolution, which are all very important when creating the logo for various formats (business card vs. tradeshow graphic vs. web). Establishing a relationship with a graphic designer is a good idea for future collateral that you may need created.

Step 4: Creating Business Cards

You can design your own business card these days with little very little artistic talent. There are many software tools, and stock image websites to help you. Where I caution you is in preparing the business card for print. What you see on the screen is not necessarily what you will get as a final business card. Use a business card template so that the images and copy are placed properly and not too close to the edge. Be aware of color limitations, and the file formats that are accepted by your print vendor. There are also many card stock thicknesses, colors, and textures. Make sure you are aware of your options, choosing the right type of stock to represent your image makes a professional looking card. You don’t want your image to look cheap, after all, when you hand out your business card, it’s a first impression about you and your business.

Step 5: Creating Your Website

Choosing a domain name

Having a website today is another way to establish your business’s identity, and an inexpensive way to advertise.

You’ll need to choose a domain name right away. Complete the domain name search, and find a good webhosting service that can provide both your domain name and web hosting service at a reasonable cost.

Designing Your Website

If you have any design ability you can pretty much design your own website these days. Choose a webhosting provider that offers already designed web templates. This allows you to choose a template design that works with your already created logo and business image. After choosing a template it’s as easy as adding copy and images to the template. In a few hours your site is created and published. Many of these websites also offer email as well.

Even if you write your own content, hiring a graphic designer to design a template for you, or manage your site when you need updates is also an option.
