I have three reviews of books about Collingwood in the pipeline; let me start with the oldest one. Legally available for download on the internet, it makes an excellent resource for those of us who live on a tight budget. Being the geek that I am, I've made a colour print-out with ring-binding. Yes, I know. Don't mention it.

A FINE OLD ENGLISH GENTLEMAN,
EXEMPLIFIED IN THE LIFE AND CHARACTER OF
LORD COLLINGWOOD.

A Biographical Study by William Davies

The book is available as DjVu, PDF, TXT and, very handy, flip book

"(...) The writer of this just declination has seen him [Collingwood] upon deck without his hat, and his grey hair floating in the wind, whilst torrents of rain poured down through the shrouds, and his eye, like the eagle's, on the watch. Personal exposure, colds, rheumatism, ague - all seemed nothing to him when his duty called. (...)"

"(...) I'm an unhappy creature, old and worn out. I wish to come to England, but some objection is ever made to it. (...)"

"A Fine Old English Gentleman" dates back to 1875. Oddly enough, reading Collingwood's letters, most of them written 70 years before the publication, are far easier to read and understand than William Davies' narration. It's not only because I've become familiar with Collingwood's style by now; I also admit that I've always had problems enjoying Victorian writing style and language. Davies uses Collingwood's life to teach his readers a lesson. A moral one, a religious one, a patriotic one. I do see his point, I even agree with him on many of his statements, but as a person living in the 21st century, I find it very, very hard not to roll my eyes and groan when finding a marathon sentence like

"(...) Emancipated from the burdensome shackles and trammels of speculative generations, we shall meet the Great Captain and Example of all that a good and noble life ought to be face to face, clear in the fullness of that spiritual light by means of which we discern that rectitude and goodness have an intrinsic value far, far above anything to which they can lead us, or anything which they can bestow upon us, lovely and precious in and for themselves alone, and beggaring every other kind of wealth and happiness. (...)"

Eh - quoi? Let's rather stick to his statement that

"(...) About the necessity for, and value of, an earnest and upright life in all our affairs, thoughts, and actions, there can be no manner of doubt. Its value is never depreciated. Its elements never change. They were the same two thousand or ten thousand years ago as they are now. Time cannot alter or lessen their importance in the least degree. (...)"

I guess I could sign that.

Davies' way of expressing himself is pompous, yes, but that was the style of his days, and so you shouldn't let it keep you away from reading the book. If the author gets lost in his own sentences and exclamations of praise, then the reason is his great admiration and respect for Collingwood. It's an admiration and respect most people who try and study this great man's life will eventually share and find justified. Despite the cruel times he lived in, despite all the hardships and the horrors of war, Collingwood always kept his humanity; something which becomes once again very clear from his letters, some of which I have found for the first time in "A Fine Old English Gentleman".

We can read his thoughts on everything, from love to life to king to family; how to raise children, how to make midshipmen do some decent work, how to deal with unpleasant relatives - while some of his thoughts wouldn't sit well with our modern way of thinking, it's not difficult to see how "modern" his views were for the time he lived in.

Each of Collingwood's letters, be it about state affairs, war, his family or the gossip he loved so much are tiny pieces in a puzzle that can show us what kind of man Collingwood was. The puzzle will never be complete, we'll never know everything. Let's be grateful there is so much we do know; Collingwood gives the overused term "hero" some of its original meaning and value back. He's not ashamed of his fears; he admits and tries to overcome them. So he writes in a letter to his wife on 8 November 1808 that she "(...) cannot conceive how I am worried by the French (...)"; and he also adds:

"(...) Perhaps you might think I am grown very conceited in my old age, and fancy myself a mighty politician; but indeed it is not so. However lofty a tone the subject may require and my language assume, I assure you it is in great humility of heart that I utter it, and often in fear and trembling; lest I should exceed my bounds. (...)"

In this connection, I'd like to recommend the excellent article about Brutes, Wimps And Heroes" by Alex Beecroft over on the Macaroni-blog. Quite obviously, the "hero" dragging his hands on the ground is not as popular as many authors and movie makers seem to think. Manly men can be old gossips and show weaknesses as well!

I don't know where to start pointing out the little gems in this book, so here's just a small, random collection.

Collingwood's "Blue Peter" to bringing up your kids:

"(...) Your measures must be systematic: when they do wrong, never omit to reprove them firmly, but with gentleness. Always speak to them in a style and a language rather superior to their years. Proper words are as easily learned as improper ones. And when they do well, when they deserve commendation, bestow it lavishly. Let the feelings of your heart flow from your eyes and tongue (...)"

Collingwood about his health and age:

"(...) I'm pretty well pleased and thankful when I am not in pain, which, between the head-ache by day, and cramps by night, is no often the case. This mortal body of ours is but a crazy sort of machine at the best of times; and when old, it is always wanting repair; but I must keep it going as long as I can. (...)"

Collingwood about his request to the Admiralty to allow him to return to England, due to his poor health:

"(...) This was not a feigned case. It is true I had not a fever or a dyspepsy. Do you know what a dyspepsy is? I'll tell you. It is the disease of officers who have grown tired, and then they get invalided for dyspepsy. (...)"

"(...) Tough as I have been, I cannot last much longer. I have seen all the ships and men out two or three times. Bounce and I seem to be the only personages who stand our ground." (...)

Collingwood about Nelson:

"(...) Oh, had Nelson lived, how complete had been my happiness, how perfect my joy! Now, whatever I have felt like pleasure has been so mixed with the bitterness of woe, that I cannot exult in our success as it would be pardonable to do. (...)"

"(...) All the praise and acclamations of joy for our victory only bring to my mind what it has cost. (...)"

Collingwood's words of wisdom about fame:

"(...) Fame's trumpet makes a great noise but the notes do not dwell long on the ear. (...)"

Memorable also his statements about the King and Queen of Prussia, who had been driven from their throne and had to seek shelter - in an apothecary's shop:

"(...) The poor King and Queen of Prussia in an apothecary's shop! How reduced! And unable to get their breakfast until the bed is made! (...)"

And no book about Collingwood would be complete without at least one tale about his loyal dog Bounce, whom he obviously even sang to sleep...

"(...) Tell the children that Bounce is very well, and very fat, yet he seems not to be content, and sighs so piteously these long evenings that I am obliged to sing him to sleep (...)"

Of course all that might not be very interesting for those whose focus is on warfare and battle strategies. But for me, as a writer, it's essential to know how people work, how they think, how they feel, how they interact with each other. I observe, watch, notice all those little aspects of different personalities, and eventually, combine them to form a character.

Villains? They come twelve a dozen. Honourable men, on the other hand, are hard to find, but well - here is one. Enjoy the book.

In the mix of other posts I am starting to write down memories from some of the global cities I am some of my mates have walked through as we ambled our way across Europe and into the Middle East. I hope you enjoy the journey!

London

Walking through London in September 2005 was fun! The sight of the Thames stirred thoughts of what lay beyond in our journey down through England into Mainland Europe. This great river also evoked memories of history lessons at school when the deeds of the British Empire were displayed across the map of the world. Never has any one nation occupied so much territory in such a short time, with nearly a quarter of the global land mass painted red.

Passing the Tower of London and working our way down through docklands we soon discovered that our arrival coincided with the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the death of Nelson, (an iconic figure in British naval history). It was quite something therefore to find ourselves walking through Greenwich with the sound of canons being fired as a backdrop.

The British navy; our insurance policy against hard times and the enforcer of the slave routes that marked out that dark period of Britsh history. No doubt also however, the witness to incredible acts of heroism and a bold adventurous spirit that took the Empire right the way round the globe. What a complex mix to rise from the shores.

Was London speaking to us at this moment? Is there a city consciousness that is passed from generation to generation, rehearsing the glorious and not so glorious deeds of the past. Certainly we felt the ghosts of yesterday chasing our footsteps down those cobbled streets.

Pressing on into the green of Kent and the English channel ahead we hoped our steps would have a lighter touch to them than those of our forefathers. Thoughts drifted to the bombers who, in the name of Jihad, had devastated London just two months earlier. Was this a modern day voice reflecting back the pain of other crusades of generations gone? The echo of such barbaric acts reverberated round our heads, even as the excitement of what lay before captivated and inspired.

We set our sun burnt faces to Paris.

All over the world some of the finest wines come from the estates that are firmly in family hands -

All over the world some of the finest wines come from the estates that are firmly in family hands - where the personal passions of family members drive the business. Nowhere would that be more true than in New Zealand's Nelson region. Nearly all the 20 or so producers are still firmly in family control and even the larger players are still owned and managed by family interests. There's not a major corporate in sight!

But in the pressurised environment of today's wine industry, retaining personal control can be difficult. Unless the business is determined to remain boutique in both size and outlook, the need for expansion brings all the problems associated with the increased investment and facilities. It's a conundrum that leads almost inevitably to the acquisition of shareholders or the sale of vineyards and plant to the larger pockets of national and international corporations.

But two of the larger wine producers in Nelson may have hit on a solution that enables them to retain their personal, "hands on" approach to their wines while at the same time providing a secure platform for their own and Nelson's expansion.

The first family is that of the Drummonds of Motueka, owners of Anchorage Wines.

Over the past 8 years Chris Drummond, his brother, father and brother in law have pioneered the Motueka area for grape growing with their first vines planted in 2000 and their first vintage under their own label in 2003.
With a background in orcharding that stretches back to the late 1800s they were well aware of the local horticultural environment and their viticultural efforts met with immediate success. Conversion of orchard land into vineyards has meant that their initial plantings of 20ha of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc have expanded to 45ha and they have another 20ha yet to plant. Viognier and a small amount of Pinot Noir have been added to their portfolio. With all the land in full production it will make them one of the region's biggest growers and a significant player not only on the Nelson scene but also nationally.

But with the expected expansion in production came the dilemmas of increased winery requirements and with the appointment of their own winemaker it was obvious to Chris that the establishment of their own facility was essential. A big call!

At the same time another family owned producer, Kahurangi Estate in Upper Moutere were facing similar dilemmas.

Greg and Amanda Day bought the old Seifried vineyards and winery in Upper Moutere in 1998 and have built the company to a stage where it has an extensive export portfolio and has increased production to the point where it is included in NZ Winegrowers catalogue as one of the "medium" category wineries with production of more than 200,000 litres of wine (more than 20,000 cases). They make two ranges. The premium range includes Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Merlot under their Kahurangi Label while entry level wines under their Trout Valley label include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir with Pinot Gris to be added for the 2008 vintage.

But with this increased production Kahurangi needed greater winery capacity. "As an example of our increased growth I'm already out of 2007 Sauvignon Blanc," Greg comments. "And I could certainly have sold more if I had had the capacity to make it. So as our own winery at Kahurangi came under increasing pressure from expanding volumes we could see a need not only for an outlet for our own increased yields but also the opportunity for a processing facility for many of the smaller producers in Nelson."

"I'd considered building a new winery on our Moutere site but it would have taken considerable work to ensure resource consent and it would not have fitted in well with the more boutique flavour of our cafŽ and tasting room or the characterful accommodation that we offer at our present winery site. So I was looking at finding an existing facility that could perhaps be converted."

"But in a serendipitous moment through contact with Justin Papesch, the newly appointed winemaker at Anchorage, the possibility of a joint venture winery and production centre was mooted. I had originally thought of a relatively small winery but once I met Chris and we talked it through, a partnership with Anchorage in a winery that would not only serve us both but also provide a contract facility for the Nelson area seemed the only way to go."

As a result of their discussion Torrent Bay Vintner's was born. Chris had access to a large packing shed that was admirably suited to conversion with cool handling and storage areas already in place, Both families are more than pleased with the results of their efforts.

"It enables us to retain our individuality and keep control of our own wines while at the same time pooling resources and even winemaking experiences," says Chris. "If there are problems or if there is the need for consultation not only can we call on both the Kahurangi and the Torrent Bay winemakers but we can also add the experience of Greg and myself."

Both families appreciate the fact that the new winery is on "their side" of town and that their fruit can be in the winery within minutes. Chris comments that he has noticed an immediate increase in quality since he has been able to get fruit into the winery straight from the vineyard without it having to be trucked over the hill to the crushing facility in Marlborough.

This year Torrent Bay crushed about 450 tonnes of Anchorage and Kahurangi fruit as well as some on contract for local suppliers. "We'll probably be up to around 700 tonnes capacity next year," says Chris. "And we already have a potential capacity for around a 1000 tonnes. It would be possible to expand to more than 2000 tonnes in the future but weÕll have to see what the demand is before we look at those sort of figures."

In the meantime the partnership seems to be working well. Greg has a nearby custom made winery for his increasing export production and is likely to make Torrent Bay facility the home base for his Trout Valley label.

At the same time Chris and his family at Anchorage have secured a long term home for the increased production they are expecting from their new plantings. And Nelson has a "top of the line" juicing and crushing plant that makes the smaller producers in the area less reliant on the vagaries of the Marlborough facilities. To mangle a cliche even further - it's win - win - win? MG

Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill’s hopes of signing Portuguese defender Nelson are shattered after the 25-year old claimed that he plans to sign a new contract with Benfica.

O’Neill who is looking to strengthen his squad specially after the exit of Olof Mellberg to Juventus, had been chasing the player for quite some time and this news will come as a set back to his plans for the new season.

In his interview with Portuguese newspaper Record, Nelson said: "It is true I went far enough to consider leaving, but now I intend to negotiate my contract with the club,"

"I have received some offers but none have come to anything and everything points to me staying.

"It is good that clubs appreciate my work but I want to stay here under better economic conditions."

The commentary surrounding each by-election from the major media outlets was very predictable and sadly very boring.

While much has been said and written about the Kororoit by-election being a test for Brumby's leadership I think the real test was for the Liberals. Labor was always going to hold the seat of Kororoit (something I had to reluctantly admit last week) so it was really a campaign to see if the Liberals and Ted Baillieu had the capacity to mount an effective campaign. For Brumby it really was a snapshot of how the electorate is feeling towards his leadership style but it shouldn't be extrapolated into how the ALP will go in the 2010 Victorian elections.

The Liberals spent a considerable amount of resources funding the Kororoit by-election despite it being such a safe ALP seat. From the newspaper advertising spend to getting notable Senators out on polling day, the Liberals wanted to make a big splash.

Indeed the Gippsland by-election was similarly a test of the conservative parties. Although with a swing against the Government as large as the one recorded it seems as though the Gippsland by-election was an indicator of Rudd's performance. It was a very old-style campaign with new Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester, blowing the dust off the 1950's campaign manuals and using them as his main play books.

Both by-elections showed that the Liberals do have some fuel in the campaign tank, and that they have deeper pockets then they've been letting on. Baillieu and Nelson should be sleeping a little more easy after strong polling results in both Kororoit and Gippsland.

Ok folks it seems that everyone in the country is confused.

I spoke to a 5 year old the other day (yes not all of them are scared of me) and when I asked this little sample human who the president was... the kids answer was "Nelson Mandela" ... yes dahlink we all wish this was the case but alas no.

The new word these days is "kill" normally used in the context of "We will kill for Zuma" (Zuma is next in line presidentosser). When put on the spot about this new chant and slogan of the youth league, Julius Melagomaniac Malema states that there is nothing wrong with getting the youth to chant about killing, besides apparently according to him, it is all Mandela's fault for breaking free from Apartheid... Huh? For the record the word "kill" now means "support till death" ... much like Nazi days, yes?

It seems our Government don't even know who's who in the zoo or rather jungle. I am however extremely surprised that the current leading party hasn't blamed the mistake on the opposing team stating "It is the DA's fault, they tried to manipulate the system to gain favours". Sorry just that would be a pot calling the kettle black.

Mr Presidentosser your nation solutes you and the rest of Africa want's your ass fired... "Zimbabwe's leaders were approaching their country's complex problems in a serious manner "in order to arrive at a stable solution. I'm glad to say that the leaders of Zimbabwe... are approaching this matter in that way," he said... sorry erm come again? *shrug* Yers I will kiss your shoes sir but please please don't infect me with politicus-bullshiticus cause I've had all my inoculations I swear!

You really can't dance, though you are quite willing to give it a shot.

Increases in petrol cost as well as interest rate has caused Australians to slow back on unnecessary

Increases in petrol cost as well as interest rate has caused Australians to slow back on unnecessary spendings. Housing affordability becomes a problem for the average Australian as inflation continues to increase to a 4% this quarter. There is also more focus in managing credit cards as Australians become more thrifty with some struggle to pay mortgage payments.

Recent concerns about petrol prices has put Prime Minister Kevin Rudd under the negative spotlight as he fails to find a suitable immediate solution that will lessen the burden on Australian households. The opposition (Liberal Party) has put pressure on the government to cut the excise tax on petrol which will cost the government $2 billion a year in tax but is this a smart choice? Rudd said no and I agree with him. Has Brendan Nelson gone back to the Keynesian Era? Does he not know that short term solutions especially such policy has not the slightest impact in the long run? Actually within a few months, his proposal will be defeated as the price of petrol continues to rise.

Instead of cutting the excise tax, perhaps it's more "effective" to transfer that money back through welfare or to the people who truly needed it. I am sure petrol cost has an impact on an upper middle class family too but its impact won't be as intense compared to those on welfare and earning less than the average wage. I am not sure how much petrol an average Australian household uses per week but exactly, how much can one average household save compare to a distribution company that exploit such opportunity? It is expect that roughly $2 - $3 per 60 litres tank but being Australians living in a suburban areas, if we cut back on one cup of coffee, we could achieve the same result (or better, bring your own coffee to work!). Again, such decision will only increase the wealth and inequality gap and honestly, there are many ways to save, we don't need the government to make ineffective policies for the rich to exploit.

What Australians (or maybe the whole world?) need is more control of petrol pricing. It is clearly obvious that the increase of prices is due to an excess in global demand and partially also price fixing between major petrol stations. We need more control or atleast aims to. Rudd has promised to withdraw our troops from Iraq and hopefully, with the next American presidential election quickly approaching (and hopefully Obama will win) they too, will eventually follow suit so that the Middle East will gain confidence to invest in further oil explorations as well as creating neutral agreements to not hike up the price excessively.

Another problem is housing affordability with a two-part fold. Firstly, the price of houses and rents have soared up tremendously during the last decade. Secondly, an increase in interest rate to control expenditures has put a toll on mortgage payers. There are many reasons that can be accountable for an increase in house pricings such as an increase in the numbers of international students which cause an increase in demand in inner suburban areas, an overal general increase in population, speculation by real-estate investors, a decrease in household size and so forth.

Although it is understandable that mortgage payments can be an issue but I do not exactly think that housing affordability at this current moment is quite exaggerated. Perhaps in the future but at this moment, I am still optimistic that one can still afford a decent home. The only problem is the fact that Australians demand to live in urban areas which is close to the city and other facilities and struggle to pay rent or buy a house because they cannot afford it. This too, is understandable but if they really take their financial state into consideration, they will find that there are areas that are decently priced, not exactly too far from the urban areas. These areas are also newly developed and the government is selling lands for a cheap rate to partially solve the housing problem as well as increasing the governmental surplus as much as possible. Sure, it maybe an extra 20 minutes lack of sleep early in the morning but it's either asking for a better wage, or putting up with that sacrifice or perhaps, move into an apartment somewhere closer to work. We must all make sacrifices one way or another, there is no use in complaining too often as the government's response is always much slower than individuals initiatives. We will only be wasting our energy, I doubt governmental intervention can really ease this problem as it involves a large figure of $$$.

So what can the government do about this problem? Perhaps one thing the government can do in the future is to start imposing on property restrictions to increase equality as well as provide a "fair go" for all Australians to own a house but of course, this too will be largely criticised by the "pro-liberals" as property rights are their hearts and souls to everything that is "economic" after "freedom". Of course, there are many short term, partially effective solutions to implement to such problem but whether how effective or efficient it is, only one who receives the benefits can find out.

So as Australians cut back on those Myer and David Jones' stocktake sales, spend less money on vacation and outdoor activities, perhaps we should also save more as we become more thriftier, so we can quickly invest in our own homes (before they are quickly snapped up by new migrants) and later utilise any spare money from rent or (rent - mortgages) to really, enjoy without worrying. Perhaps even by then, petrol wouldn't be a worry as we will be driving in a hydro/solared automobile...one can only dream but right now, we must work hard!

"The world needs more people like Nelson Mandela.
He was 34 when he became a lawyer.
He was 34 when he became actively involved in politics.
He was 46 when he was sentenced to life in prison.
He was 72 when he was released.
He was 75 when he received the Nobel Peace prize.
He was 77 when he became South Africa's first black democratic President.
He was 81 when he established the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
He was 84 when he launched his global HIV/AIDs campaign, named with his prison number '46664'.
This year, he is 90."

Nelson Mandela has arrived in the UK to celebrate his 90th birthday on Friday. Mandela will be feted by celebrities and dignitaries from all over the world.

A side story that is threatening to take the headlines away from the bash or at least grab a large chunk of it, is British performer Amy Winehouse. She is in bad health, is suffering from emphysema but has insisted on performing Friday for her number one fan, Mandela. Precautions are being taken to ensure that the entertainer, sometimes referred to as a loose cannon due to her onstage and offstage antics, does not push herself too hard.

Driver quotes after the Friday practice at Magny Cours

We had a small engine proble

Driver quotes after the Friday practice at Magny Cours

Fernando Alonso

We had a small engine problem at the end of the morning session but my mechanics did a remarkable job to fix the car and we were able to continue our free practice programme this afternoon without any problems. We tried several new elements that we ran in the test last week and everything went well and we completed our programme. Looking ahead to qualifying tomorrow, I think that our level of performance is rather encouraging.

Felipe Massa

It was a good day, apart from a slightly tight neck which I began to feel this morning: so as not to take any risks, I chose to avoid doing too many runs of several laps. I therefore concentrated on the car's set-up, working with both types of tyre. On the softer ones, it seems to be a little bit harder to find the right balance, but we must take into account that today, as usual on a Friday, the track is still dirty. Everyone suffered a bit with graining on the front tyres, but tomorrow the situation should improve. We must study all the data we have gathered to prepare as well as possible for qualifying and the race.

Kimi Raikkonen

I am happy with the way things went during these two free practice sessions. We got through all our usual Friday job list, working mainly towards the race. Of course we don't know how much fuel our main rivals were running, but I get the impression we are very competitive. Maybe I did not get the most out of the first lap, but I am happy with the balance of the car. We tried out this new system for a Safety Car period and I think it could be a good solution because it puts everyone in the same situation and that way,you can't be penalized just by unfortunate circumstances.

Lewis Hamilton

We made a great deal of progress this morning and seemed to get the car dialled in nicely to the circuit. This afternoon, I unfortunately had a twitchy moment at the exit of Turn Three and ran wide into the gravel. It cut short my run with no major damage and slightly disturbed our run programme. At the end of the session, we tried out a new Safety Car timing system, which still needs a little more work at the moment. But today has shown we’re looking quick this weekend.

Sebastian Vettel

I am very happy with the work we did today. I had a good pace since the beginning of the morning session and we made changes that seemed to improve the car. Fifth looks very good, but you never know what fuel loads the others were running, but it’s better than being twentieth! The new aero package is a good step forward and should show its value on this track with lots of fast corners and quick changes of direction.

Robert Kubica

This was a quite difficult Friday and we lost some running time in the second practice session due to technical problems. The balance of the car was a bit strange and, therefore, it was quite difficult to drive. We now have to analyse the data and see what we can do for tomorrow.

Heikki Kovalainen

This is a circuit I’ve always enjoyed - the sweeping corners and fast chicanes really suit my style and I quickly felt at home. It’s been a pretty straightforward day: during the afternoon, we worked on the set-up and tyre comparison runs without any problems. I’m happy with the balance of the car in both the slow and fast corners and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

Nick Heidfeld

It is too early to say how we will perform here, but today my free practice was trouble free. We did everything that is on the usual Friday programme, including the tyre comparison and evaluation. At the very end of the second session the car bottomed out heavily at the exit of turn three after I ran over the kerbs. I could feel something come loose and went back to the pits one or two minutes before the flag.

Nelson Piquet Jr

The day has gone well. We have been able to do a lot of running and as a result collected lots of data, which I hope will allow us to continue improving after we have been through it this evening. We still need to make some small changes to improve the behaviour of the car, but overall I am satisfied with this first day. It’s certainly a good start to the weekend.

David Coulthard

There was some initial graining on the tyres early in the session, but it improved as the track rubbered in. It was a pretty normal Friday practice for us, we managed to work through all of our programme and now we’ll look at the data to see what we can do for tomorrow.

Nico Rosberg

We made a lot of progress today which is satisfying. We made quite a few changes to the car over the course of this morning’s session because I had some slight oversteer but, once we’d made those adjustments, things started to improve and we were fairly competitive in the afternoon. Performance-wise, we can be pretty happy with where we are at the moment. Obviously, my race strategy is a lot more important here than normal, so I might have to compromise my pace in tomorrow’s qualifying to account for that.

Jarno Trulli

Today we made it through a lot of work on tyres and set-up and the car felt good in general. It has been hot so the track conditions were changing a lot over the course of the two sessions. We still have to solve some set-up issues in order to find more speed as the car's handling is crucial here. The track surface is very dark and it is quickly affected by the sun so it can suddenly become very slippery. You have to prevent that and figure out what balance you might end up with in the race. But Toyota has generally been competitive here so I hope we can do well this weekend.

Sebastien Bourdais

It’s an enjoyable feeling to be taking part in my first home Grand Prix and to be close to the fans and I have a lot of good memories of this circuit. I got off on the wrong foot this morning, struggling to find the right balance on the car. The new aero package speaks for itself in that I think we are a bit more competitive, but we will have to see what happens in qualifying to see what the real improvement is. Today, I was not on the same programme as Sebastian and when earlier we were on the same set of tyres, the times were quite close between us. Therefore, given the difficult start this morning the day has ended up not so bad.

Kazuki Nakajima

It was a bit of a difficult day for me. We struggled a little with the grip levels but we tried many different set-up options to solve the problem and it finally started to go our way towards the end of the sessions. I think track conditions will be better tomorrow so hopefully qualifying will go ok for us.

Timo Glock

That was a difficult start to the weekend. The tyres are just not working for me at the moment and that makes the car very difficult to drive. I can't get the peak out of the tyres for the first lap so I am not getting the lap time, then I get massive graining and a big drop-off. So we have work to do but I remain hopeful. After our good result in Montreal, we had a positive test last week in Barcelona and collected data in all areas aimed at improving the car both mechanically and aerodynamically. We'll have to see how much progress the other teams have made but we should aim to score points.

Mark Webber

It wasn’t one of our better Fridays, it’s a good thing it wasn’t Saturday today! At least we have a chance to work through everything tonight and understand how we can get more performance from the car. After a very encouraging Barcelona test, it’s suddenly a bit of a mystery here how to get comfortable with the car. But, we’ll work tonight and try to get a better set-up ahead of qualifying tomorrow.

Jenson Button

It was a productive day today and we were able to achieve good mileage over the two sessions. We made progress during the course of the day and I felt happier with the car this afternoon. Unfortunately we were still lacking pace, which was a surprise as we were hoping to be challenging the top ten here in France.

Giancarlo Fisichella

We went through the scheduled programme today and made some steps forward, but we are still relatively far away from the others and have some work to do. The grip level was quite poor in both sessions and we had some understeer in the high speed corners. We also compared the tyres and the softer compound works okay, but it will still be a difficult weekend.

Rubens Barrichello

It was a busy day as we had a number of items to evaluate on the car to find the best set-up for this track. Although the track conditions improved in the afternoon, we were not able to make as much progress as we hoped over the course of the day. We were expecting the car to perform better around this circuit, however it is evident that we have some work to do to get the balance right. Although we may have been running a different programme to our competitors, I think today reflects that we will be competing in the midfield pack this weekend.

Adrian Sutil

Overall it was such not a great day as we had a few small technical problems today. The main issue was with the brakes and then the tyres overheating. I was struggling under braking, and this morning I lost a lot of the session. In the afternoon the track was slower as the temperature increased and it was difficult to get the tyres to work well again, but now we have found the problem and can get it fixed for tomorrow.

In my baby boomer travel dreams, I’ve always wanted to visit New Zealand, especially the Sou

In my baby boomer travel dreams, I've always wanted to visit New Zealand, especially the South Island. When Alan and I finally decided to make it happen, we began with our handy friend Google. But, before we pressed the "go" button, Alan and I listed our criteria:

No driving for Alan. Although he's perfectly capable of driving on the "other" side of the road, Alan wanted a relaxing trip where he could enjoy the scenery rather than concentrating on the pavement ahead.

Spending two nights in each location. I did not want the type of trip where we rushed from place to place, staying in a different location every night.

Experiencing as much of New Zealand's natural beauty as we could through walking, hiking and photography. We didn't want to rush from place to place, spending most of our time in the car, opting, to get out and explore, instead.

Stays in high quality lodging in a small setting. We hoped to find boutique inns or bed and breakfasts where we could visit with the owners, learning more about their life in New Zealand, plus meet other guests, to compare travel notes.

Cruising through pages of Internet information about New Zealand, Alan and I discovered Robert Panzer's company, Tailored Travel. We read reviews from his clients listed on his website. We researched the Qualmark logo displayed on the site, learning that it indicated that Robert had met high standards in New Zeland's travel industry.

We filled out the questionnaire on the Tailored Travel site, which began an email correspondence with Robert. Then, we talked over the phone. Robert listened to our travel wishes, gently guiding us away from poor choices, then designed a plan to meet our guidelines. After discussing lodging options, Robert submitted a travel package for our approval. We tweaked the plan to our satisfaction, then paid our deposit by credit card.

So, what did we get for our money? Robert's fee included all meals (except wine), lodging, ground transportation and his guiding services.

Alan and I chose an 8-day tour (which was mainly a tour of the South Island's West Coast) that began in Nelson and ended in Queenstown. Along the way, we hiked a short section of the Abel Tasman National Park, photographed Pancake Rocks at Punakaikai, visited the craftsmen in Hokitika, walked to Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, zoomed down the Matukituki River in a jet boat plus explored the vibrant area around Queenstown. Lodging more than met our expectations. The same can be said for our dining experiences. The best part, the only time we needed to pull out the credit card was for souvenir purchases or an excursion that wasn't included in our itinerary.

We traveled in Robert's Toyota van. He accompanied us to our excursions, stayed in the same lodging and dined with us. Driving from one location to the next, we learned about life in New Zeland through Robert's eyes. We even visited his home and met his American wife, Joan.

If you're looking for a no-hassle way to tour New Zealand according to your baby boomer travel dreams, this is the answer. When you call Robert, tell him Alan and Donna are coming back again soon.

To read about our trip, begin on this page at Donna's trip blog.

Have you toured New Zealand? Post a comment, tell me your favorite experience. I'll add it to the list for my next trip.
