The day started off with a very perky Ting Tings playing at the Odeon. Lots of people for a fairly early performance - considering things only ended a couple hours before. They played all their hits in the beginning (ie - Great DJ, Shut Up & Let Me Go) and saved the big crowd pleaser That's not My Name towards the end. With only 1 slow song (Traffic Light) and ending their set with the same title name - We Started Nothing. Deliciously guilty pop music is what I call it. But I guess it's no longer guilty - it's just good!

The rest of the day after that was kind of slow for me. I took a few naps here and there. I woke up in time to catch Judas Priest at the main stage. Personally, it was more interesting to watch people around me than the actual band. I mean, who puts the PRIEST on in the day time? It was kind of lackluster. Rob Halford was way to nice for a metal god - you know what I'm saying? Plus I think he must have pulled a hip muscle himself... He was kind of dragging himself around real slowly - and with a metal studded leather trenchcoat the whole time. You could clearly tell he was sweating balls up there. I was hoping he'd be decked out in some bondage type leather vest or something. Oh Rob you dissappoint me!

Next act I caught was the recently reuinted My Bloody Valentine. I wasn't expecting to SEE anything explosive really. They are more a sound band to zone out to - it did leave a good ring in my ear for the next couple hours.  No talking in between songs from what I managed to catch.  I can finally say HEY I SAW MBV LIVE.  I left a little early to catch a little bit of Neil Young on the main stage. The old man is angry at something. Early on during his set he complained alot about the sound and other stuff - which was as accidentally caught on the big screen and he was mic'd. Once he started with his slow folky stuff - I fell asleep. It wasn't him though - it was me. I've been extremely exhausted! The nap did give me extra 'oomph' to catch LIARS at the Pavillion stage at midnight. This was my highlight performance of the evening. Not only was I up front to catch all the madness but they are my new jam. I've been listening to them non stop this entire time.

Of the songs I've heard by them (which you can also sample on their Myspace) - I don't really know how to classify their music. They are mainly three piece band with Angus Andrew (vocals/guitar), Aaron Hemphill (percussion, guitar, synth), and Julian Gross (drums). They had another guy on stage with them to provide extra guitars though. Maybe he's their 4th member - I'm not sure. Anyway, Angus is this tall, aloof looking guy who was clearly intoxicated or something but it was a good show. Aaron plays the guitar and he also plays a mean drum - in addition to the drummer they already have. He can bang my drum any time for sure! Also, when Aaron takes the main vocals - he makes their sound something like the Jesus & Mary Chain. Anyway, amazing band - I don't think I'll ever get bored of this band - and I ain't lyin about.

Neil Young is de duurste act op Rock Werchter dit jaar. Kijk, dat vind ik nu bizar. Niet omdat ik zijn status als levende legende in twijfel trek. Meer nog: laten we hier en nu meteen afspreken dat mijn respect voor de man enorm is, en de afmetingen die zijn discografie met de jaren in mijn platenkast heeft ingenomen evenzo. Maar toch: de duurste act. Dat wil dus zeggen dat hij om en bij het miljoen euro opstrijkt voor zijn passage op Werchter, want dat is vandaag de gangbare prijs voor een topact.

Dat heeft alvast weinig te maken met het feit dat Young onlangs nog veel hits heeft gehad. De laatste, 'Rockin' in the Free World', dateert van 1989, bijna twintig jaar geleden. Ook de frequentie waarmee hij toert is de laatste jaren geenszins afgenomen. In tegendeel: dit voorjaar alleen al was hij twee keer in Antwerpen voor concerten die, tegen 139 euro per ticket, ook al fors geprijsd waren. Dat geld hoefde hij alvast niet uit te geven aan een omvangrijke groep of een duur decor. Integendeel: de foeilelijke doeken die tijdens het optreden werden geborsteld gingen achteraf eveneens voor forse bedragen de deur uit.

Ook Tom Waits - een van mijn andere helden, voor u het zelf vraagt - schaamt zich niet om ticketprijzen aan te rekenen waar een gemiddeld gezin gerust een week mee aan de hap kan blijven. Niet dat zijn American Expresskaart onlangs is afgesloten. Waits' jongste paar cd's zijn de bestverkochte in zijn carrière en bovendien wordt hij door de talloze covers die van zijn songs worden opgenomen sowieso al slapend rijk. Ironisch, daarom, dat zowel Neil Young als Tom Waits zowat tot de grootste iconen van de alternatieve muziek worden gerekend. Het zijn, zo wil het verhaal, artiesten van wie de integriteit geen moment ter discussie staat.

Wel, niet dus. Op hun oude dag zijn het geldwolven geworden die de loyauteit van hun eigen publiek misbruiken om de kas te spekken. Een kas die - laten we wel wezen - groot genoeg is om er een hele straat in te huisvesten. Zo groot hun artistieke talent is, zo roekeloos blijkt de zakenman die ook in hen schuilt. En zo bijten ze alsmaar harder in de hand die hen voedt. In dit geval: de hand van het publiek dat trouw elke cd koopt, en ook als die tegenvalt toch weer naar de winkel gaat telkens er een nieuwe verschijnt. Het publiek dat de duurdere limited editions koopt en dan thuis vaststelt dat de extra dvd niet van die aard is dat je hem twee keer wilt bekijken. Dat T-shirts koopt waar je na vier keer wassen de originele kleur niet meer van herkent. En dat dus zonder morren een fortuin neertelt om de oude helden aan het werk te zien.

Een van Neil Youngs beste nummers, 'This Note's for You', is daardoor niet langer het statement waar ik het lang voor gehouden heb, maar een sterk staaltje hypocrisie. Ain't singing for Pepsi / Ain't singing for Coke / Ain't singing for nobody / Makes me feel like a joke. Het klinkt lekker, maar veel geloof kan ik er vandaag niet meer aan hechten. Wat mij betreft prijst Neil Young morgen het verfoeilijke Jägermeister aan. Of maakt hij reclame voor frituurolie of damesondergoed. Desnoods brengt hij fertiliteitsproducten aan de man. En daar mag hij dan grof geld aan verdienen. Als daardoor zijn concerttickets - of die van de festivals waarvan hij op de affiche staat - wat redelijker geprijsd worden voor de mensen die hem na aan het hart dragen: liever vandaag dan morgen.

Pero eso no iba a ser todo. Diez minutos después, al quinto tema, nos quitan el concierto y meten 5 minutos de publicidad, transcurridos los cuales empalman con la cancion que Young interpretaba en ese momento.  Como si nada, a media canción, en pleno solo, en un claro clímax. Habría un par o tres de cortes más de este tipo a lo largo del show. Esto sólo puede ocurrir en España.

A algunos se les llena la boca en defensa de una televisión pública y ésta no respeta a una parte de su inmensa minoria; no respeta la cultura; y tampoco la integridad musical de la obra ni al artista en sí. Claro, claro, me equivo -me digo-, eso no pasa con una retransmisión de música clásica, o de jazz, o de teatro. Evidentemente no tendrán la osadía de cortar por lo sano el concierto de Año Nuevo desde Viena a mitad de un composición de Strauss para meter unos minutos publicitarios. Pero bueno, el mandamás de la2 pensará que a los melenudos éstos del rock no les importa, ya es bastante que les damos un concierto de rock. Yo una televisión así no la quiero. O respeta a su audiencia, a toda por igual, o conmigo que no cuenten para sufragarla. A ver qué pasa con los conciertos de Police o Dylan, que también parece serán emitidos.

The first band on stage was "Everest", an indie/folk type band from California, they were very impressive and really helped the atmosphere of the gig. They came on stage with the sun shining and their set consisted of real laid back tunes that was just a good time. Sitting out in the sun just chilling with a great band how much better can it get.? The answer when you know Neil Young is on later on in the evening.

The Frames came on next and I wasn't horribly impressed with them. The acoustic stuff at the start was boring with the singer guy looking like he was constipated when he tried to hit the higher notes/shout at the courses. All in all thought the singer was very good he bantered with the crowd and tried to get a sing along going. The sing along is actually my last criticism of The Frames he chose probably the most depressing song for a sing along. The song was called "Happiness" but was slow and really depressing to listen to. Even the bit he tried to get the crowd to sing along with was slow and depressing. Aside from the obvious mention of the word happiness it was hard to associate the song with anything other than just plain depressing.

Neil's stage props and set up were strange to say the least. They included a pulsating red phone, Indian chief carving, a fan and light up numbers and letters. The artist's easel that was beside the Indian carving was strange but turned out to be a pretty cool idea. Anyway the set list was as follows,

Love and only Love lasted nearly fifteen minutes and was a great was to kick off the gig. The sheer wall of sound that came from the stage at the start was unbelieavable. The artists easel to the right of the stage had a canvas on it with a big N. Throughout the gig the setlist was displayed there, these canvas's were painted by a guy standing at the back of the stage. The gig was fantastic and I'm not going to bore you with a bit about each song but I do have a few criticisms about the gig.

I wasn't expecting Neil to be a showman ala Bruce Springsteen or Mick Jagger. But at times he seemes totally oblivious to the crowd, with his back turned to the crowd either with the bass player or the drummer. A lot of the songs degraded to self indulgent jamming. Which I have no problem with but when a five minute song gets stretched to the best part of forty minutes and he's still singing/playing, that sort of thing shouldn't happen on stage with a crowd that's getting bored. I was disappointed with the encore as well, I thought he's come out and play "Rockin in the Free World", "Crime in the City" or "Cortez the Killer" but no he played a Beatles song.

Still though it was a great gig and I'm glad I went to see him, but I don't think I'd go again.

So, I'm like the last dude to find out about these guys, but they're freaking great. I hear a ton of influences, or unconscious reminders other bands: early Neil Young, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Jeff Buckley's backup band, Interpol's song structure, The Shins, amorphous "Southern Rock", Poor Old Lu, Sunny Day Real Estate....

I like that the songs are unpredictable, the lyrics are interesting, and singer Ben Bridwell does cool stuff with his voice and his singing tempo. They don't seem to be a parody of anything, although they remind me of tons of stuff I like in other bands. Something is oddly familiar about their sound, even though I'm hearing a lot of songs for the first time. I definitely want to keep up with them.

Neil Young har sørget for et aktivt konsert-år for mitt vedkommende. Knapt ferdig med vinterens suksess i Europeiske konsertsaler begynte ryktene å svirre om opptil flere festival-opptredener i sommer. Siden mottoet er: Kommer Neil'ern - kommer Knut, så var det bare å bestemme seg. Roskilde kunne vært artig, men det blir for mye mas. Dublin var fristende, men valget falt på Hop Farm Festival på den engelske landsbygda. Dette er en en-dags festival som også inkluderer storheter som My Morning Jacket, Primal Scream og Supergrass, så her snakker man Value-for-money (£49.50). Opplegget er klappet og klart. Avreise fredag, turist i London på lørdag og endeløse gitarsoloer fra the Godfather of Grunge på søndag. For å komplettere helga blir det mellomlanding i Oslo og noen timer med Bruce Springsteen på Valle Hovin på mandag. Dette begynner å ligne på en brukbar langhelg...

At Neil Young kommer til Spektrum i august bekrefter Kinder-egg-filosofien om at "jo, det er mulig" å få oppfylt 3 ønsker på en gang. I alle fall på ett år. 3 europa-turneer med Neil Young i 2008 er intet mindre enn sjokkerende og viser at mannen er på hugget som aldri før (nei, han er ikke blakk).

PS: Konserten i Oslo Spektrum ble solgt ut på 45 minutter. "Verdens største band" Coldplay var ikke verst de heller. De solgte ut på én time...

Neil Young: Let's Impeach The President

Na verdade, comecei a escutar ele na quinta, mas achei chato! muito chato! achei as 3 primeiras músicas entediantes... depois disso melhora, mas nao empolga! Muito folk pra mim, exageradamente folk... cansa!

La música y la televisión actual no se llevan bien. Es un hecho. Las mayorías mandan y desgraciadamente, la calidad y la cantidad rara vez han circulado por la misma vía, y no es una excepción en la cultura. Por lo general lo que más gusta es lo más fácil.

Las películas que la gente más se mete a ver un sábado por la tarde son las de menos pensar, las más tontas, las que tienen el trailer con el montaje más espectacular. Los trabajos más ansiados son aquellos en los que haya que realizar la tarea más sencilla a cambio de la mayor nómina. Nos gusta que nos lo den todo hecho. Disfrutamos con la sencillez, y esto acarrea consecuencias contraculturales.

La música no se libra de ésto, y como ya he dicho, la televisión no hace mucho por inculcar a las nuevas generaciones esa inyección (a estas alturas casi póstuma) de calidad auténtica (gustos a parte) en las revenidas cabezas de los falsos poperos, payasos varios, y creyentes del fenómeno OT (y similares, no quiero concretar).

La cadena más polivalente en cuanto a culturilla en minúsculas es La 2. Parte exenta de manipulaciones como lo fuera la primera de TVE desde el primer día de emisión, se ha intentado mostrar durante años como la alternativa gratuita para cerebros hambrientos, pero la cosa no podía durar. La triste y dura realidad es que nos enfrentamos cada vez más a menudo a demostraciones tajantes de que incluso la "alternativa cultural" sufre de falta de ética (oh, vamos, no soy un cura. Digo ética DE VERDAD). Cualquier excusa es buena para anunciar un gel de baño, aunque tengas que cortarle las alas a un viejo ángel de pelos largos con un nombre y renombre que hace temblar corazones en todo el mundo.

De verdad, me cuesta creer que corten a Neil Young para entumecer la casi protésica zona de convicción de nuestras mentes con tonterías que pueden estar muy bien y ser muy prácticas, sí, pero en cualquier otra cadena. En cualquier otro momento. No en mitad de semejante apoteósis musical. No puedo creer que la publicidad en programas basura esté más medida que en un concierto de un dios del rock. Pero es así.

Una pena, porque esta cadena, aunque sea un canal con una ridícula tasa de televidentes acérrimos a la supuesta cultura de calidad, podría servir perfectamente para ampliar horizontes, y ser partícipes desde nuestras propias casas, de algunos de los miles y miles de actos que transcurren en lugares que jamás veréis por la tele. Tan sólo cuando estos grandísimos artistas abrazan su final, se les recuerda en los noticiarios durante un escaso minuto (si llega) para elevarnos al olimpo de los grandes genios de la humanidad. Falsos, aprovechados. Nunca le dan importancia hasta que les salen las cuentas.

Neil Young jamás habría aparecido en La 2 si no fuera para meternos un buen puñado de anuncios cada pocas canciones. Para atraer a aquellos ignorantes que hubieran querido agarrarse de ese saliente televisivo, habida cuenta de que es el único gratuíto que existe. Y claro, para eso sí vale Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Mark Knopffler y cualquier figura de altos vuelos musicales que pueda hacerles mantener la "pasta".

Pero... ¿no es una televisión que ya pagamos nosotros? ¿De verdad es necesario interrumpir con publicidad piojosa un concierto por el que estamos pagando queramos o no? De veras creen que nadie se ha dado cuenta!?

Afortunadamente, a posteriori, esto tiene una utilidad. Ignorar por completo, como vengo haciendo desde hace años, esos momentos de "musicalidad" que la mierda de televisión de hoy día nos hace tragar. Mierda de música, para ellos. Mierda de artistas, sin arte. Basura de televisión, sin miramientos.

Nunca muera la verdadera cultura, la infinita, aunque sus amantes no salgan en televisión (ni falta que hace).

El pasado viernes, quien se enteró y estaba en casa pudo ver la actuación de Neil Young en ese esperpento parque de atracciones del "rock" que se ha montado en Arganda. Lo dicho, una buena ocasión para disfrutar de este auténtico genio estadounidense, al cuál no sigo como debiera pero que hoy va a valer para actualizar el blog.

No es propiamente un trabajo suyo, bueno, sí lo es, lo que pasa que la banda que acompaña aquí al bueno de Neil Young son unos chicos de Seattle que responden al nombre de Pearl Jam. Lo cierto es que entre ambos siempre hubo buena química, llegaron a girar juntos y a realizar apariciones conjuntas y todo acabó en un disco que no figura como tal en el carrera de Pearl Jam por esas cosas de los derechos de las compañías discográficas. Un disco potente que estoy seguro gustará a quien decida bajárselo, que no creo que sean muchos ya que es un trabajo sobradamente conocido pero que no hay que dejar escapar.

Anders kann ich mir den unverschämten Preis, den du für ein Freilichtkonzert im Stadtpark verlangst - 79,90€ oder 160,00 alte Deutsche Märker - nicht vorstellen!
Wenn du dein Geld versoffen, kifft, kokst, oder sonst was hast, oder dich mit Aktien verspekuliert, sag Bescheid, es gibt mit Sicherheit reichlich Fans, die dir 'nen Euro oder Dollar spenden würden.

Aber auf diese Tour, dass finde ich, kurz gesagt, Scheisse!

PS. Wie lange gedenkst du im Stadtpark zu spielen? Weil: für "nur" 20€ mehr hätte ich mir zum Beispiel in Scheeßel über 3 Tage lang ca. 60 Bands anschauen können. Vielleicht klingelt da ja irgendwas bei dir?

La canción es una versión acústica del single del mismo disco, Hey Hey, My My (Into de Black), y aunque la segunda es más rockera, más dura, ambas suponen un punto de inflexión en la carrera del artista. A finales de los setenta el rock clásico estaba de capa caída tras la muerte de Elvis, y el ascenso del punk amenazaba con sepultarlo completamente. Fue este temor a quedar anticuado lo que obligó a Neil Young a adaptarse a las nuevas corrientes, con la banda Devo como principal referente, pero sin renunciar a sus raíces folk rock. De hecho, los My My, Hey Hey son eso mismo, un lamento ante la posibilidad de desaparecer, aderezado con los solos de guitarra del de Toronto. La jugada le salió tan bien que el cantante se convirtió en un modelo a seguir por el movimiento grunge entre otros, tal y como demuestra la trascendecia del "It's better to burn out than to fade away" de la letra del tema en la historia de la música. Sin ir más lejos, Kurt Cobain, líder de Nirvana, incluyó la cita al final de su nota de suicidio.

Echo la vista atrás y me percato de que poco a poco uno va consiguiendo acercarse a los grandes clásicos con un poco de paciencia: James Brown, Chuck Berry, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Springsteen, los Who, Rod Stewart, Stooges, MC5, Sonics,... pero finálmente he cumplido un sueño: ver al gran NEIL YOUNG. Hace unos años, cuando Neil sufrió su primer aneurisma, me prometí que viniera donde viniera, alli me acercaría a escucharle... no pudo ser, perdí ocasiones en Paris, Milán, Londres... pero la espera mereció la pena.

En su característica linea conceptual, Neil apareció con una escena repleta de los elementos de su imaginario: un misterioso caballete y junto a él un totem de jefe indio americano cubrian el flanco derecho del escenario. Al fondo los restos de un luminoso de espectáculos al más puro estilo americano en puro declive entretenían al personal amigo de las cábalas haciendo conjetura sobre el significado de las vocales y consonantes inconexas que aun pendían de las barras metalicas. Flanqueando a cada músico se habían dispuesto cinematográficos cañones de luz al más puro estilo de las producciones clásicas de cine. Un telefono rojo iluminado con un tenue flexo nos desafiaba en los juegos mentales frente a la sección rítmica...

Y por fin, con un leve retraso, apareció Neil, parco en saludos, pero gigante en humanidad sonrió como sólo el consigue sonreir a un público que le adora y le va a consentir todas sus malvades eléctricas esta y mil noches. Y vaya que se explayó en maldades electricas... sólo fue rasgar los primeros acordes del clásico "Mr. Soul" de los tiempos de Buffalo Springfield para que el público presente estallara de emoción. Un tema, sólo es preciso un tema para que las guitarra de este hombre y la sintonía con la banda se afinen a la perfección.

Crónicas de sociedad:

Una auténtica vergüenza de crónicas sociales (llamarle críticas a estos textos sería un despropósito), que no están a la altura del gran Neil. No cabe duda que el nivel del concierto fue sensacionalmente bueno, pero ¿vieron estas personas el concierto o estaban más preocupadas de comprar en ese gran centro comercial que fue el Rock in Rio?

Esperando algo más elaborado

Fue el final perfecto. Un chute de energía y compromiso de futuro inconformista. En el entorno perfecto, un Rock in Rio que proclama un mundo mejor. La catarsis perfecta entre un público totalmente entregado y el hippie de Toronto, que no defraudó a nadie.

La verdad es que tenía muchas ganas de verle en directo. Incluso a pesar de sus sesenta y dos tacos y de que los excesos le han llevado a un estado de salud endeble (hace relativamente poco en 2005 un aneurisma le dejó ligeramente tocado). Pero por lo demostrado en el escenario se mueve como nadie, se deja la piel en cada riff y sigue manteniendo fuerte su voz personalísima. Por momentos pareció poseído por el mismísimo espíritu de Woodstock y quería retrotraernos a aquel mítico agosto del 69 e incendiarnos con su rock violento. Muchas jóvenes promesas del rock actual (tipo Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Killers, Wolfmother, Black Mountain…) podrían aprender de la actitud encima del escenario de esta bestia rockera sexagenaria.

De un concierto para la historia destaco el fantástico comienzo con “Mr.Soul” de su época con Buffalo Springfield, la quebradiza “The Needle and the Damage Done” y el banjo de “Old Man” del Harvest, el country inconsolable “Too Far Gone” de ese gran disco de los 80 que fue Freedom, “Love and Only Love” una de sus mejores canciones de los 90 del Ragged Glory que inmortalizó durante más de 10 minutos y pasó a convertirla en un himno, una larguísima aunque maravillosa "No Hidden Path" que no conocía de su último disco Chrome Dreams II, y cómo no, mi preferida de siempre “Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)”.

Se echaron en falta clasicazos como Southern Man, Rockin’ in the Free World, Cowgirl in the Sand, Like a Hurricane, Cortez the Killer, Pocahontas… Pero qué cojones, el concierto fue de 10. Esperemos que regrese pronto.

Un último detalle, después de ver los resúmenes en TVE y los vídeos de La2 subidos en YouTube tengo que decir que los comentarios de Toni Garrido y Ángel Carmona me parecen lamentables y que estropean el conjunto . Por Dios, dejen de hablar gilipolleces mientras suena auténtico rock&roll!!!
