On Thursday, this portrait of a brooding Heath Ledger, which was painted shortly before the Australian actor died in January, was voted the most popular painting in the 2008 Archibald Prize competition. The Archibald Prize is Australia's top art prize for portraiture. Ledger posed for the portrait in December at Ledger's family home in Perth, Australia.

Ledger, who was best known for his role as a conflicted gay cowboy in the 2005 movie Brokeback Mountain, died at the age of 28 in New York on January 22, 2008. Artist Vincent Fantauzzo, 29, had been friends with Ledger for many years.

The portrait features a bare-chested Ledger against a black background, looking straight out of the canvas with two other images of the actor at the sides whispering into his ears. Fantauzzo refused offers to sell the painting and said that he had spoken to Ledger's family, who requested that the portrait be donated to the New South Wales Gallery in Sydney, Australia.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House has passed a housing aid plan to
provide $300 billion in refinanced mortgages for struggling
homeowners.
President Bush says he'll veto the bill. It passed 266-154 with
support from 39 Republicans.
The measure would let debt-ridden homeowners refinance into
fixed-rate, government-backed mortgages they could afford.
Congressional analysts say it could help as many as 500,000
borrowers and cost $2.7 billion over the next five years.
The White House calls it a burdensome bailout that would open
taxpayers to inappropriate risk and reward those who helped cause
the housing crisis.

This story seemed straight forward this morning when I started: How many detainees who are released

This story seemed straight forward this morning when I started: How many detainees who are released or transferred from Gitmo have wound up on the battlefield again with the goal of killing Americans? But the more you report this story, the more you realize, the Pentagon doesn’t have a good handle on how many detainees are involved and some lawyers argue that their clients, the detainees, got radicalized after spending years in Gitmo without charge.

Cully Stimson, a former senior policy adviser on detainees to the president, told me that these detainees are trained to lie. It is part of their terror training – that is why Stimson says - it can be so hard to make the case they are enemy combatants. Stimson put it this way:

“You find a guy, who says he's a sheep herder in the mountains of Afghanistan, he has 25k cash on him and a GPS recorder and he's found with 200 rpgs. Is he a sheep herder? No. And so this is a typical type of cover story."

According to the Pentagon's statistics, and I mention the source because it’s always important to know the source and their agenda, of the 500 detainees released from Guantanamo Bay, about 36 are confirmed or suspected of returning to the battlefield. That is roughly 7 percent.

Among the group, Mohammed Nayim Farouq (top left) who according to military officials, quickly renewed his relationship with the Taliban and Al Qaeda after his release in July 2003.

Also, a Russian, Ruslan Odizhev, (bottom) who was killed in June 2007 after being transferred along with 7 other detainees to Moscow in 2004.

And Abdallah Salih al-Ajmi, (top right) who the military now links to a suicide bombing in mosul last month that killed 7. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said today that some countries don't even want the detainees back - period.

“I think we do as careful a vetting job as we possibly can before releasing these people. There are a lot, um, there are a lot of, prisoners down there frankly, that we would be prepared to turn over to their home government , but the home government isn't prepared to receive them."

I learned today that the conditions of each detainee’s transfer can vary dramatically. They could be transferred back to their home country and the only condition is that their passport is handed over. Each case is negotiated separately between the us and the host country.

A source familiar with a number of detainee cases told me the real problem is that there is no process at Gitmo. There is no way for a court to decide who should be held and who should be freed. And that in some cases, these guys become so angry and so frustrated, that if they didn’t hate the us before they got to Gitmo, they do now.

What should we do? Because the problem of possible radicalization is more pronounced in Iraq where, one contact claims, more than 20,000 are being held.

Senator Barack Obama won a clearly decisive 14-point victory over Hillary Clinton in the North Carolina primary on Tuesday and lost by less than two points to Clinton in the Indiana primary, an outcome that infused a huge boost of momentum to Obama's candidacy as the Democratic nominating contest entered its final weeks.

The results from those two Democratic presidential primaries, the largest of the remaining Democratic ones, was assured to further widen Obama's lead in pledged delegates over Hillary, providing him with new ammunition as he seeks to persuade the major Democratic leaders to coalesce around his campaign. He also increased his lead in the popular vote in winning the North Carolina Primary by more than 250,000 votes.

"Don't ever forget that we have a choice in this country," Mr. Obama said in his address in Raleigh, N.C., that carried the unity themes of a convention speech. "We can choose not to be divided; that we can choose not to be afraid; that we can still choose this moment to finally come together and solve the problems we've talked about all those other years in all those other elections."

Barack Obama's North Carolina Victory Speech

"We now know who the Democratic nominee is going to be," NBC's Tim Russert declared on MSNBC last night after Obama had decisively drubbed Clinton in North Carolina, winning there by fourteen points, and ending up within less than two points of her in Indiana. Russert, NBC's host of Meet the Press, declared that the Democratic presidential nominee is going to be Barack Obama.

The moment came shortly after midnight Eastern time, captured in a devastatingly declarative statement from Tim Russert of NBC News: "We now know who the Democratic nominee's going to be, and no one's going to dispute it," he said on MSNBC. "Those closest to her will give her a hard-headed analysis, and if they lay it all out, they'll say: ‘What is the rationale? What do we say to the undeclared super delegates tomorrow? Why do we tell them you're staying in the race?' And tonight, there's no good answer for that."

The impact of Russert's statements was apparent almost immediately, starting with The Drudge Report, the online news billboard that is the home page to many political reporters in Washington and news producers in New York. It had as its lead story a link to a YouTube clip of Mr. Russert's comments, accompanied by a photograph of a beaming Mr. Obama with his wife, Michelle, and the headline, "The Nominee."

[From ScienceDaily]

"More than one billion acres of biotech crops have been grown in the US, but their environmental impacts are not fully known. In Arizona, farmers share maps of biotech cotton fields with University of Arizona scientists, enabling detailed analyses of the effects of this technology. Now a team of biologists proposes that making similar maps of the entire US available to scientists will permit much-needed studies of the environmental impacts of genetically engineered crops . . ."

UNDATED (AP) - Without a break after yesterday's two contests,
Hillary Rodham Clinton is pushing full steam ahead to next week's
primary in West Virginia.
She's adjusted her schedule and will be campaigning in the state
today, as will her daughter Chelsea. All three Clintons will be
spending time in the state, which offers a total of 28 delegates.
Bill Clinton launches a busy schedule tomorrow.
Barack Obama beat the New York Democrat in North Carolina and
fell just short in Indiana. He's taking the day off at his home in
Chicago.
Meanwhile, Clinton backers have been making TV appearances to
underline that she's still in the race. They're also urging party
leaders and elected officials known as superdelegates not to flee
to Obama.
Obama is now 184.5 delegates shy of the number needed to secure
the Democratic nomination. His backers have been urging the 270
unaligned superdelegates to announce their support for him -- and
end the race.

WHITE HOUSE (AP) - President Bush is urging the military leaders who run Myanmar to let U.S. experts join the recovery effort following Saturday's devastating cyclone that has left more than 22,000 dead and 41,000 missing. The administration has pledged more than three million dollars in aid and Bush says the U.S. wants to do "a lot more." However, the president says Myanmar's leaders aren't letting a U.S. disaster team into the country. White House aides say the team is standing by in Thailand waiting for word on visa requests. And they say U.S. Navy ships in the area can't steam into port to help out. Some international groups have started to reach areas devastated by the weekend storm. But administration officials are calling the response to the disaster by Myanmar's military leaders "inept."

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - John McCain is taking aim at
potential Democratic rival Barack Obama for voting against John
Roberts for U.S. chief justice.
McCain told an audience at Wake Forest University in North
Carolina that Obama also opposed Supreme Court Justice Samuel
Alito. He says that amounts to following a partisan line against
two judges McCain says he'll use as "models" for those he would
appoint.
Hillary Rodham Clinton also voted against Roberts and Alito, but
McCain focused today on Obama.
McCain was reaching out to the Christian right, which is
concerned about judges making far-reaching decisions. He says he'll
appoint judges who know that there are limits to judicial power.

BAGHDAD (AP) - The U.S. military says 3,500 soldiers sent to Iraq last summer as part of the so-called surge will soon be leaving. A military statement released last night says the soldiers will redeploy to the U.S. in the coming weeks. The increase in troops - along with the rise of Sunni fighters who turned against al-Qaida and a truce called by Shiite militias - has been credited with helping dramatically cut violence across
Iraq in the last 10 months. All of the troops sent in as part of the surge are expected to leave Iraq by July, but U.S. commanders are asking for a "pause" in redeployments so they can assess the security situation as
soldiers leave.

This one is infrared for the most of it, but the last part of the video goes back to a standard look. It is amazing when you see how much of the submersible really is under the Pacific Ocean and this video shows it. You can also see how dangerous it becomes for our men and women fighting the war on drugs. Tough enough to approach a boat on top of the water moving at a good clip, now look at the drug runners out the hatch, preparing to abandon the sub and trying to sink it at the same time.

The web site Zillow.com, which tracks home prices, says more than half of homeowners who purchased during the market peak in 2006 owe more on their mortgages than the home is worth. Zillow says the rates of negative equity run much higher in the once-hot housing markets of California, Florida, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Robert Downey, Jr: The Darker Years

It was a while in coming, but in 1996 the police officers who had stopped Downey noticed that he was carrying an unloaded .357 Magnum, along with small amounts of heroin and cocaine. Just a month later, he was cited for trespassing and being under the influence of a controlled substance after he mistook a neighbor's house for his own and fell asleep in a child's bedroom. His life rapidly turned into a series of court dates and drug relapses. In 2000, he was apprehended by police in a hotel room with cocaine and a Wonder Woman costume.

There were rehabs that did not work, followed by jails that did not impress, ending up in his having to serve hard time, twice, including a one-year stint in a state prison where he had to fight to find a place to stand. Just four months after Downey's August 2000 prison release, he was arrested again, on a Thanksgiving weekend for alleged cocaine and Valium possession and being under the influence of drugs. The Valium charge was reduced to a misdemeanor in May 2001. Downey was sent back to drug rehabilitation and put on three-years probation after his July 16, 2001, no-contest plea to the November 2000 drug possession charges.

Elton John and Sam Taylor-Wood: Downey's Return to Acting

It is usually reported that it was Mel Gibson who gave Downey his first post-rehab film break, in 2003's The Singing Detective; as the producer, it's reported that Gibson put up the insurance money for his friend. However, Downey's real first acting job after being ordered into the drug treatment program in July 2001 came less than two-weeks later, thanks to Elton John and Elton's friend Sam Taylor-Wood. When Taylor-Wood suggested to Elton the idea of having an actor lip-syncing to the song in the video for the single I Want Love, both Taylor-Wood and Elton thought Downey would be perfect, and the video ended up being a one-shot video centered on Downey.

The video consists of Downey walking around an empty, lonely building (actually, Greystone Manor in Beverly Hills) at the end of July 2001, lip-synching the song, I Want Love. It has been reported that Elton and Taylor-Wood arranged for Downey to be granted a one-day pass from rehab in order to do the filming. Looking back, Taylor-Wood described the experience as one where, "The whole process of making it involved such serendipity, everything just slotted into place really beautifully. Between Elton asking me to do the video and its airing on MTV was less than two weeks. It was an unbelievably fast turnaround." The video also was included in Elton's subsequent concert tour and was shown on a big screen onstage while he sang the song.

I Want Love: The Paradox of Love

I Want Love, the Elton John music video produced by Taylor-Wood, becomes an awkwardly painful statement from Robert Downey about the paradox of love. Noting that he is a man carrying the heavy and aching weight of self-destructive baggage, Downey's desperate self basically says, "I want love, but I want nothing you do or say to affect me, I am who I am." In its encounter with the other, the self wished to affirm its absolute independence, even though its need for the other and the other's similar wish gave the lie to it.

Pietà: An Icon of Exhaustion and Distress

Sam Taylor-Wood:

"Doing it [the filming of I Want Love] was fun. It was such a different experience, because I felt I didn't have much to lose, it's not a world I wanted to go on and make a career in. On that day, I think there were 16 10-minute takes before we found the right one. When we got the perfect take, we were all so excited, we didn't want the day to end.

Afterwards there was still lots of film left. So we said, "Come on, let's play, let's make some things." I'd just been to Rome and seen Michelangelo's Pietà in St Peter's. So I said, "Right, let's do a Pietà." There was something very natural about the process of doing that. He was exhausted, I was exhausted, but we were both quite elated. The Pietà video consisted of me propping him up. The whole experience of doing the music video and the Pietà, was a tremendous release."

Why did Taylor-Wood decide to do a moving piece of Pietà rather than a still one? The Pietà, for instance, could have been a still. Taylor-Wood responded, "With that piece I wanted to see the struggle, to see the weight, so to speak. You can see the muscles in my arms and neck straining, and my breathing is really laboured. It's silent, but you can see me heaving to keep him held up. I drop him a bit, and pick him up, and drop him again. You couldn't do that in a photograph in the same way."

In Pietà, the draped body of Robert Downey Jr, laid out like Holbein's Dead Christ in the Tomb, is presented in a manner that is so matter of fact, so drained of real importance, that the idea of death asserts itself with the chilled subtlety of a business card dropped on a dinner setting. Why him, one might ask, and for that matter, why her? Why ask, would be her likely reply. Taylor-Wood has appropriated widely in the past, from Atlas to Roman orgy scenes (updated to the present day) to Hollywood movies.

Here, as elsewhere in her work, feelings of emotional and physical distress take the place of narrative. In Taylor-Woods' hands, The Pietà becomes an icon of exhaustion and distress. Or obversely, exhaustion and distress become iconic, if only by association.

It is very important to note that after the filmings of I Want Love and Pietà with Sam Taylor-Wood, Robert Downey Jr. has never again gone to rehab, jail or prison.

Sam Taylor-Wood: Crying Men

Prior to being diagnosed with cancer eleven years ago, Sam Taylor-Wood was the darling party girl of Young British Art. By the age of 42, Sam Taylor-Wood had become the British art world's acceptable face: a mature artist with an A-list address book and, with her husband, Jay Jopling, a place at the new art establishment's top table. Grown men have wept for her, but how woud they remember her? She could have sat for Modigliani. Her long face, the slim figure, the strong, bony hands echo the left-field sensuality and elongated elegance of his models. There are hints of it in her own self-portraits, especially the strangely balletic Self-Portrait Suspended, which was made after she had filmed and photographed members of Great Britain's Royal Ballet. This is a forgivable display of narcissism; a creative work that is evoked by a dream of swimming in air can hardly be a legitimate source of public outrage in the art world.

Taylor-Wood's acclaimed earlier experimental short film, Still Life, in which a bowl of fruit was filmed slowly rotting away, was about mortality and life's inevitable transience; her later work, Crying Men (2002-2004), was a treatise on the theme of sadness. Her series of photographs in Crying Men attempted to capture the moment between the real and the unreal, the imitation and the authentic. By her use of celebrity actors as models, the viewer debates whether their tears of sadness (and therefore their emotions) are genuine. If the models had been anonymous, the question would never arise. Of course, the question is really a moot one; even if their tears were acting, the pictures can give a viewer the rare opportunity to touch upon the real sources of sadness from which professional actors may draw upon to perform feelings of unhappiness ad sorrow. It is a subtle challenge that is typical of Taylor-Wood's increasing degree of maturity as a visual artist.

Robert Downey, Jr continued his working relationship with Taylor-Wood in this work, appearing as one of the celebrity actors in her Crying Men series of photographs.

Chaplin is a 1992 semi-biographical film about the life of Charles Chaplin. It starred Robert Downey Jr., Dan Aykroyd and Geraldine Chaplin. The film was adapted from the books My Autobiography by Charles Chaplin and Chaplin: His Life and Art by David Robinson. It was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough. The original music score was composed by John Barry.

Although the film was criticized for taking dramatic license with some respects of Chaplin's life, Downey's uncanny performance as Chaplin won almost universal acclaim. Attenborough was sufficiently confident in Downey's performance to include historical footage of Chaplin himself at the end of the film. The film's tagline was "Everyone has a wild side. Even a legend."

It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Music, Original Score. Robert Downey Jr. also won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor.

Robert Downey's return from the brink is truly a fighter's tale. Since getting clean in 2001, the man who was at one time referred to as the best actor of his generation, but also (in Time Magazine) as a "stark reminder of the strangling power of addiction," has labored hard to show Hollywood that he deserved another chance.

And look at him standing there now, a great big movie star in a huge, blockbuster of a movie, The Iron Man, with not a trace of human frailty. It was only seven years ago that the only time you saw Robert Downey Jr. getting big publicity in our newspapers or on television came when he was being paraded and humiliated in public by the police after one of his many arrests.

Yet when it came time for Marvel Studios to cast the lead for a huge franchise film, Iron Man, it bet on Robert Downey. He is not only back in the game but at the very top of it. Downey's saga easily can lead one to think: Isn't this a great country, or what?

First Posted 16:51:00 05/06/2008

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Philippines -- Local officials of Palawan have broken ranks with Malacañang over the latter's preference for treating the Kalayaan islands as outside the country’s baselines.

The Palawan officials say areas of the disputed islands occupied by China and Vietnam, particularly Mischief Reef, should be clearly marked as within the national territory in the baselines bill pending in the House of Representatives.

"Why are we giving up Mischief? That is a weakening of our position over the entire island group which comprises the municipality of Kalayaan. I can't really understand what the executive department is up to," Northern Palawan Representative Antonio Alvarez told reporters in Palawan Tuesday.

Mischief Reef, a submerged coral reef system that lies within the Philippine claim, was occupied by the Chinese in 1995, prompting a howl of international protests.

China has since established a fortification in the area on the pretext of maintaining it as a haven for its fishermen.

Alvarez disclosed that administration officials, including former energy secretary Raphael Lotilla, have been doing groundwork to reverse the House position on the baselines issue.

"They [administration] are saying that our position in Palawan is parochial. I think this is beyond parochial. We are dismembering the entire country with the regime of islands position," Alvarez said.

The solon was referring to a Palace "suggestion" that Kalayaan Island Group and Scarborough Shoal in the Spratlys Islands be excluded from Philippine baselines and, instead, referred to as a regime of islands to be claimed by the Philippines in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Seas.

Alvarez proposed that the administration should let the House go ahead with its passage of House Bill 3216, or the Archipelagic Baselines Law, which the administration wants to recommit to the committee on foreign affairs.

"Let us just pass that bill and settle the matter finally in the bicameral [conference committee] level, if necessary," Alvarez said.

Earlier, the Palawan provincial board issued a resolution supporting the baselines bill and asserting the status of Kalayaan as Palawan's 23rd municipality.

The United Nations has imposed a May 2009 deadline for coastal states to submit their respective national legislation on continental shelf claims.

PLEASE NOTE: This post will be a constant Work In Progress.

Despite its trials and tribulations throughout the past 100 years, the Hotel Bentley is arguably the most important, historic, and architecturally significant structure in the City of Alexandria. During the previous decade, the hotel has been closed more often than it has been open.

Currently, the hotel is owned by Baton Rouge entrepreneur (and Alexandria native) Bob Dean, who closed for business back in December of 2004.

The Hotel Bentley was constructed in 1907 by Joseph Bentley, a native of Pennsylvania who became wealthy in the lumber industry in Central Louisiana. Bentley was an eccentric fellow, and legend has it that the only reason he built the hotel is because he was turned down for a room in the former Ice House Hotel (which was subsequently destroyed by fire).

Bentley was particularly impressed by the Capitol Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas, so he tracked down the architect and asked him to design a hotel in Alexandria. Both hotels feature similarly opulent atriums, much like the Peabody in Memphis.

Joseph Bentley at the wheel.

Bentley ensured the hotel could also serve as his personal residence. He carved out a large apartment on one of the top floors and installed a personal elevator; both the apartment and the private elevator remain today.

In or around 1933, Bentley built a massive addition to his hotel, an addition which was constructed by Tudor-Ratcliffe (both families remain in the construction business to this day). It added more than 80 rooms.

During World War II, the United States military trained over a half of a million troops in the Alexandria area, and the commanders of these troops-- people like Dwight Eisenhower and George S. Patton-- resided for long periods of time at the Hotel Bentley, planning the now-historic Louisiana Maneuvers.

Throughout the 1950s, the hotel continued to flourish, but by the late 1960s, it was struggling. The hotel closed for business for nearly a decade, during which time it allegedly served "other purposes" for select clientèle (if you catch my drift). The owner of the hotel during this period was apparently (subsequently) locked up in jail.

Skip forward to the early 1980s: Buddy Tudor, a local developer, purchased and renovated the shuttered hotel, reopening it after millions of dollars in repairs to national acclaim in 1985. Mr. Tudor remained as owner for nearly 15 years. He sold to a group out of New Orleans, and less than a year later, they sold the hotel to Bob Dean, who retains ownership to this day.

Mr. Dean, to his credit, initially made around a million dollars in upgrades to the hotel, though he kept the hotel open for less than five years.

Today, the hotel remains shuttered.

Fortunately, there are several people throughout the State who understand the wisdom of reopening the Hotel Bentley.

Pictured below: The Mirror Room in the Hotel Bentley

Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity.

"Crazy" by Ray Lamontagne

Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity.

Yes or no?

Regardless, with a fedora hat tip to Ryan, I find it pretty awesome that the folks over at TPM Muckraker picked up on the story about the anti-Cazayoux robocaller. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Actually, not only did they pick up the story, they followed up on it and confirmed our suspicions: Darrell Glasper, the ousted chairman of BREC, was behind the attempt to suppress African-American votes during the run-off election between Don Cazayoux and Woody Jenkins.

Mr. Glasper told the TPM Muckraker:

Glasper told me that he'd been frustrated by the Democratic Party's lack of support for Jackson when he'd run in the primary against the white Cazayoux -- there was no get out the vote operation, he said, and "without money in the community Jackson couldn't make it." But that support, he said, materialized on Cazayoux's behalf in the general election. "That's my interpretation of how they play the political games." (Of course, there's nothing remarkable in the fact that the party did not run a GOTV effort within the Dem primary but did against the Republican candidate.)

When I asked him why he'd signed off the calls "Friends of Michael Jackson," when the calls were not in fact from Jackson's campaign, he said "I'm a friend of Michael Jackson's." When I pressed, he said that the calls "may have said friends or by a friend," he can't remember.

Let's cut to the chase: Mr. Glasper's underlying implication is that the National Democratic Party decided to give Mr. Cazayoux more financial support because he is white.

That is absurd.

Mr. Cazayoux had announced his intentions to run way before Mr. Jackson entered the race. Indeed, Cazayoux said he would be running regardless of Baker's intentions. It's also worth mentioning that Cazayoux was considered the favorite for Speaker of the House prior to last year's run-off elections, a position that was subsequently bestowed to a Republican, per the endorsement of Jindal.

To be sure, Mr. Cazayoux enjoyed the support of the National Party, but to suggest that their support was based merely on his race is to imply that he wasn't a worthy candidate. More importantly, based on Mr. Cazayoux's campaign finance reports, it appears as if the National Party was not significantly involved in the race until after Cazayoux beat Jackson in the primary.

And again, it's difficult to believe in the integrity of a Republican who feigns concern over the "right" Democrat being elected.

This morning, Ryan at The Daily Kingfish alerted us to an interesting development in the Jackson/Cazayoux robocall story: Apparently, the company responsible for placing those calls was listed as "Magnolia Computers," which, as noted in the Louisiana Corporations Database, is owned by Darrell W. Glasper.

Darrell Glasper was the controversial chairman of BREC. He has been lauded by the guys over at LouisianaConservative.com and lambasted by the folks at Rolfe McCollister's Baton Rouge Business Report. McCollister recently wrote:

This guy (Glasper) should have never been appointed in the first place and has been a disaster—and divisive force at BREC. That he could even come close to getting support from seven folks may say more about the Metro Council than it does about Darrell Glasper.

We recently had a Daily Report poll that asked if Glasper should be reappointed, and 82% said, “No.”

Glasper is also, apparently, a Republican, having donated money to the National Republican Congressional Committee three years ago.

There's really only one way to look at this, despite what conservative commentators may imply about the dynamics of the upcoming election in November:

This is manipulative, dishonest, racist politics that should be publicly shunned and excoriated. And, if Representative Jackson is telling the truth (and we have every reason to believe that he is; apparently, he recently signed a sworn statement attesting to such), then it should be clear what this actually was: a Republican-backed effort to suppress African-American vote under the pretense of racial equality.

Ryan transcribes the call:

"I'm very upset that the National Democratic Party favored Don Cazayoux from New Roads over Michael Jackson. The Democratic Party raised $850,000 for Don Cazayoux which is the only reason Michael Jackson lost in the Democratic runoff. The National and State Democratic Parties always seem to back the white democrat over the black democrat and that's wrong. Alot of us who are supporting Michael Jackson feel the National Democratic Party need to be taught a lesson. We're not voting for Don Cazayoux because we believe Woody Jenkins will be a lot easier to beat in November when Senator Barack Obama is on the ballot. You haven't heard many black elected officials supporting Don Cazayoux. On Saturday we're going to stay home and see how the National Democratic Party do without us."

"Paid for by Friends of Michael Jackson."
