After spending 2.5 hours waiting for the bus on three separate days to go to Taylor’s from USJ

After spending 2.5 hours waiting for the bus on three separate days to go to Taylor's from USJ, I just realized how pivotal having a good play-list of music is even though I am still very much pissed at having to idle so long. So here I am sharing 10 tracks which just about saved my sanity throughout this torrid public transport debacle week:

1) Time To Pretend - MGMT

Probably most commonly known as the theme song for the movie "21", "Time To Pretend" by the Converse-supporting MGMT is an electro-rock heavyweight in its own right. Off their debut LP "Oracular Spectacular", the song really gives me the chills every time I listen to its majestic opening.

2) Funny Little Frog - Belle And Sebastian

If you do not know it already, I simple adore Belle And Sebastian, especially 2006's "Life Pursuit" which resulted in amazing pop tunes like "Funny Little Frog". Generally regarded as one of the best indie pop bands in the business by critics and fans alike, this Scottish masterclass produced a fantastic love song in "Funny Little Frog", which shines as a non-emo and fun-sounding romance-themed track. The song simply makes you want to jump up, dance, and kiss anyone in sight, and that is the power of Belle And Sebastian.

3) Golden Skans - The Klaxons

I actually first came into knowledge of this song when I listened to the Kaiser Chiefs' cover during BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, and I have been in love with it ever since. Boosting an incredible dance rock range, the Klaxons, who hail from London, produced one of last year's most-loved dance anthems in "Golden Skans".

4) Why Do You Let Me Stay Here - She & Him

I have a thing for retro-sounding 60's pop-rock, and She & Him are one of the bands in recent times who have been able to charm me with sounds reminiscent of the good old non-manufactured days, the other bands being The Pipettes and Camera Obscura. The video is disturbingly cute.

5) Pull Shapes - The Pipettes

The Pipettes remind me of a time when Diana Ross and The Supremes were at the stop of the musical pile, but I am so very disappointed that the original three band members have left the group. I would have loved to catch one of their live shows which are famed for them performing in matching pooka dot designs and synchronized dance moves.

6) Die Die Die - The Avett Brothers

If you even remotely enjoyed the Juno soundtrack, you will love this song. It was love at first hearing when I sampled this song off their 2007 album "Emotionalism", and its folk-y jangles have made its way to my very own personal musical hall of fame. Seth and Scott Avett, thank you for the fabulous bluegrass!

7) Naive - The Kooks

Off the UK rock band's critically-acclaimed 2006 debut "Inside In/Outside In", Naive is one of those songs you just cannot get out of your head, especially when the likes of Lily Allen and Kate Nash have already covered this hugely-popular song.

8) Sweet Temptation - Lillix

Lillix are one of my all-time favourite bands ever since my dad gave me an MP3 player and my sister introduced me to ARES way back in 2003. "Sweet Temptation" is the first single off their second studio album "Inside The Hollow", and is a rock tune that you can dance to. Plagued by constant upheavals in the band's line-up, the Canadian rock band more famously known for "What I Like About You" which appeared in the movie "Freaky Friday" has recently announced that they are working on their third album. Yay!

9) Young Love - Mystery Jets (Featuring Laura Marling)

A song about young love, yeah, pretty obvious. A song you can sing along with that tells the story of a guy who loses the number of a girl when the rain washes the digits off his hand. A desperate search for her ensues. Mystery Jets, who recently did a solid cover of Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love", team up with songstress Laura Marling for this great pop track, which also has a great dance remix by Shoes.

10) Invisible - Modest Mouse

The opening of this song kills me every time, classic Johnny Marr, a genius with a six-string. "Invisible" is my favourite track off 2007's "We Were Dead Before The Ship Sank" and one of my favourite rock songs of all time.

Yeah, so mainly my week has been spent trying in vain not to be late in class, and I also met up with a couple of friends who I have not seen in a long time who are in Taylor's, namely Helina and Lih Fern. I will be moving again next week to Mentari, which is just next to my campus. Thank God!

To make matters worse, my bus back to Seremban yesterday broke down as well. Curse you buses!

Anyway, hope you guys enjoy my selection of songs.

Kudos to great music!

Cheerio~

Almost all new festivals seem to suffer an inescapable array of organisational pitfalls from sound s

Almost all new festivals seem to suffer an inescapable array of organisational pitfalls from sound system failure to toilet overcrowding. Just take ZOO8 and the Mighty Boosh Festival this year as dramatic examples. This leads me to believe that a) most people thing organising a festival is easy when, b) it is bloody difficult, nigh impossible.

East London’s newcomer to the ever-burgeoning festival season is Field Day and, by all accounts (that I’ve heard), its first outing last year was little short of a disaster. However, the organisers have bravely carried on, pulling themselves up by the laces of their plimsolls and attempting to learn the harsh lessons of their initial attempt. And while there seem to be some haters still out there, in my opinion it was a great success.

Field Day lived up to almost all its promises, providing an eclectic and interesting cross-genre lineup of artists in a fun and friendly atmosphere. And without too many perfectly coiffured trendy try-hards, drunken aviator-sporting landfill-indie louts or worn out fogies complaining it wasn’t as good as festivals used to be.

Yes, the weather was miserable. Yes, Mystery Jets and Dan Deacon pulled out. Yes the female festival-goers had to queue for yonks to use the portaloos, resulting in a line of squatters along the perimeter fence. But despite all of this, everyone I came across seemed to be in high spirits, in a “hardship brings us together” kind of way, and genuinely excited about the music.

Noah and the Whale kicked things off with a brightly coloured start (from their blue and yellow getup at least). Much-hyped “song of the summer” ‘Five Years Time’ goes down well but there’s a certain repetitive formula to each remaining song – start quiet and slow, build to energetic folk tune complete with fiddle and trumpet backing – that leaves the crowd wanting.

Howling Bells adequately release their brand of female-fronted grungey rock before giving way to a band whose performance both live and on record continues to astound me: Wild Beasts. Even in the setting of a dreary day with a limp crowd, they perform each song with the love and attention usually reserved for small children (who thankfully seem to be largely absent today – what on earth makes people think it’s a good idea to bring their toddlers to festivals?!).

Laura Marling seems to be plodding along in a pleasant and inoffensive way as I watch from behind the control tent but I don’t stay to hear the beautiful ‘Ghosts’ as I’m keen to hear the Mae Shi. Initial disappointment at what appears to be another dull band supposedly working under the banner of ‘experimental punk rock’ gives way to some actually pretty interesting sounds and some actually pretty fun songs that my little brain doesn’t quite know what to make of in the 15 minutes I see them perform for.

Choosing Jeffrey Lewis over Of Montreal, I head to the Homefires stage and peer over the umbrellas to watch Jeff and his female companion crank out some classic anti-folk. Much to my surprise and delight this included the epic and incredible ‘Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror’ with the scratchy violin replaced by battered acoustic guitar but losing none of the head-fuck of lyrical flood of consciousness. Plus to experience previously unfamiliar songs is a genuine treat from this master of storytelling and “Creeping brain, creeping brain” still rings round my head.

Paying £6 for uncooked pasta is enough to dampen things more than the rain ever could, especially when done to the sounds of Lightspeed Champion who receives an undeserved bump up to the main stage. Indeed Mystery Jets cancellation is my biggest disappointment of the day as “Two Doors Down” and “Young Love” would no doubt have blown the clouds away, such sunny pop songs as they are.

Another hard choice comes as Efterklang takes precedence over Les Savy Fav, but thankfully their creamy mix of Sufjan Stevens sounding baroque pop and Broken Social Scene collective zeal instils me with joy. However, the weather has finally broken me and with no great love of headliners Foals or Simian Mobile Disco I decide to retire to the warm and dry.

For all the complaints made since the day, I remain convinced that the weather was the biggest problem and that Field Day presented the left-field-loving public with a festival of impeccable taste. Where else could you find as great and varied a collection of artists for a mere £26.50 plus booking fee?

I recently obtained the new Mystery Jets Album titled 'Twenty One.' The album is growing on me slowly but surely but this is hands down, the best track on the album. It has such an awesome summer sound and nice mellow sound.

I must admit I'm fairly ignorant about the band and their history (check wiki link above) but I do like their sound. As soon as I listen to the album a few more times, I'll inform you of my educated opinion.

Mystery Jets have a new video for their single, Half in Love with Elizabeth, which features a special appearance from her Majesty. Unfortunately the video isn't on youtube yet but it is on NME.com if you have an account with them. Meanwhile here's their video for their previous single (also my favorite song from their sophomore album, Twenty One.)

Merely four words, that’s all. Merely four little words. But, dear reader, is there any other

Merely four words, that's all. Merely four little words. But, dear reader, is there any other phrase which causes your heart to sink faster than a drink round Amy Winehouse than 'a new study shows....'? They range from facts that only simpletons fail to grasp (people who are overweight eat badly and then are unhappy) to the pointlessly obscure (we lose 6 years of our lives to doing that thing in the street where you are walking and someone walks up to you and you go one way to avoid them but they do the same so you go the other and so do they and you are stuck there forever.) That last one may not be true, but you get my point. And when it is teamed up with the phrase 'in America' all bets are off. Then it could literally be anything. 'A new study in America shows that people who drink battery acid suffered serious study pains. According to the University of Hal and Delorean, the test studies complained of mild discomfort at first before vomiting up their insides into a gigantic sickly puddle of organs and Bud Light'. Though, to be fair, I'll believe any statement that starts with the words 'in America'. You could tell me they'd invented a new banana which grows in plant pots and looks like Jemima from Playschool and I'd believe you. But I digress. The reason the phrase had come to mind was that I heard on the Radio today that a new study shows that if you focus on 5 things that you are grateful for each morning it gives you an energy burst. Hmmnnn. ELM's initial temptation is to dismiss this as the demented ramblings of fools who probably all have perfect lives with insanely shiny toothed children, sexually voracious partners who are game for anything (including animals) and cars which run on their own sense of self-satisfaction. But ELM is combating it's misanthropy this weather, and we are going to embrace it. And let's face it, there are so many great things about music, we've limited it to five current things. The Kooks, obviously, just lost out;

Ida Maria's New Album - Scandinavian Pop Music usually has that winsome, wan quality but closer inspection reveals that sort of thing usually emanates from Sweden or Denmark. Norwegians tend to be mental, and Ida Maria is no different. A long term fave of ELM, her debut is spunky, ambitious and above all, nuts. Check out new single 'I Love You So Much Better When You're Naked'. If you don't like it, you've gone wrong.

Britney Spears To Star in 'S&M' Film - When I saw this headline, I initially assumed that her career had hit rock bottom and this was the only career choice available. Closer inspection revealed that Britney is fed up with being a pop star - though I wrongly thought she'd given that up in 2003 - and now wants to be a serious actress. So, of course, she has taken a role in a movie which ostensibly deals with risqué scenes but will, in all probability, simply amount to a titillating T&Afest. I don't care. I'll wank to it regardless.

Johnnie Walker on the Radio - Ah, Johnny. Rock music just never got past big choruses and power chords for him. Filling in for Terry Wogan just now, we have had lots of Bruce, Mellencamp, AC/DC and even World Party. All of which are great. Perks you up in the morning like a strong cup of coffee and a menthol. Also despises his audience in a subtle way, which makes me laugh. Great to have him back, frankly.

A Replacement for Kirsty MacColl - Finally, we have a new 'Featuring'. Have you missed average bands being mightily improved by the addition of a talented lady on backing vocals? Of course you have. Me too. So, step forward Laura Marling, whose charmingly English vocals can be found improving both Noah and the Whale's 'Five Years Time' and The Mystery Jets 'Two Doors Down', two cracking summer songs. Her debut album is a bit ropey which indeed marks her out as a worthy successor to Kirsty. That invite from Billy Bragg must be in the post.

The End Of The Festival Season - Not that we are celebrating it, indeed we'll be attending the last biggie of the Summer, the disappointingly booked Connect, but when the festivals end, bands start touring again! From September on you can see American Music Club, Sun Kil Moon, The Hold Steady, The Cold War Kids, The Fleet Foxes and countless others. Plus, it was warm twice last week, so I'm sick of summer. Give me cold nights, darkness, pubs with real fires and cigarettes on the pavement. You know it makes sense.

Actually, I do feel a little bit more energised now! Who knows, there may be something in these studies after all!* As usual ELMer's the floor is yours.....
(*There isn't.)

Brincou...

“Prepare for a shockwave.”

Nummers als Bring Me Back a Dog werden woordelijk meegebruld.

For their first album in six years, The Pretenders have taken the unusual step of offering fans the chance to freely download a song per week from the album in the lead-up to its official release date of September 22nd. Each week the band's official website will direct fans to one of 11 media partners - including AOL, Apple, ClearChannel and MSN - who will host a different song from the record for a limited time. Recorded in just 10 days, Break Up The Concrete - the band's ninth studio album - is said to be a stripped down, raw sounding roots album, but listen for yourself and judge. The first song, ‘Boots Of Chinese Plastic', is currently available over at Spinner.

After teasing fans with the three-song Loose Ends EP earlier this year, Rachael Yamagata will finally release her long-delayed second album on October 6th through Warner Bros. The two-part album, prosaically titled A Record In Two Parts...Elephants & Teeth Sinking Into Heart, was produced by Mike Mogis (best known for his work with most of the Saddle Creek roster) and John Alagia (producer of Rachael's 2004 debut, Happenstance), and features guest appearances by Maria Taylor and James Valentine of Maroon 5.

First side, Elephants reportedly "plays like a film score, with orchestral transitions that expand as the songs progress", while second side Teeth Sinking Into Heart is "grittier and more defiantly cynical" with guitar-driven rock songs that touch on PJ Harvey, Tom Waits and "‘Pulp Fiction'-style surf guitar". Billboard.com reports that the album is a two-disc set with 15 songs, but the press release says one disc with 14 songs. Presumably the press release is more accurate but we can't say for sure.

Outstretching the four year wait for Rachael's album by some margin is the return of cult duo Shelleyan Orphan after 16 years of almost total silence. Caroline Crawley and Jem Tayle, who released three romantically inclined albums for Rough Trade between 1987 and 1992, issue their long-awaited (or should that be never expected?) fourth album, We Have Everything We Need, through One Little Indian on October 13th. Fans and newcomers alike will then have the chance to own an as-yet-untitled boxset of all four albums, complete with a bonus disc of outtakes and unreleased material and DVD footage, later in the year.

Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown just can't seem to keep out of trouble. Having both done prison time in the last few years, the rappers are now facing separate lawsuits from the same book published, Simon & Schuster. In Kim's case, the lawsuit seeks the return of a $40,000 advance paid to the rapper in 2003 in the expectation that she would turn in her debut novel by June 2004. Foxy, on the other hand, was paid $75,000 in 2005 for her autobiography ‘Broken Silence', due to be completed by February 2006. Both women have voiced their dismay at the filing of the lawsuits, with Kim claiming to have made many attempts to resolve the matter privately and Foxy blaming Simon & Schuster for withdrawing from the project and calling the legal action "meritless".

That Santogold/Diplo mixtape everyone has been talking about for the last two weeks is now available, for nothing! Top Ranking, which features songs by Aretha Franklin, B-52s and The Clash, guest appearances from M.I.A., Amanda Blank and Mark Ronson, and several Santogold remixes, is free to download here.

Fresh from their Laura Marling collaboration, Mystery Jets have enlisted Kate Nash and Florence & The Machine for the B-sides to their upcoming single ‘Half In Love With Elizabeth'. Kate Nash has recorded an alternative version of the song called ‘Disco Liz', while Florence & co. have covered the Mystery Jets song ‘Flakes'. The single is released on August 25th on CD, 7-inch vinyl and as a download.

Following the marriage of singer Becky to drummer Bert earlier this year, Welsh band The Hot Puppies are gearing up to release new album Blue Hands on September 22nd. Originally slated for release last year, only the single ‘King Of England' made it to the shops in the end, followed in May 2008 by second single, ‘Somewhere'.

And that's not all. In the lead-up to the album, Becky and keyboardist Beth will issue the Bec & Beth EP, a collection of acoustic covers of Burt Bacharach's ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart', The Smiths' ‘Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me' and The Inkspots' ‘I'm Making Believe'. The EP will also include an original composition, ‘French Song', a bittersweet lament sung in fluent français, and is released on August 25th through Bath-based label Purr.

In other Hot Pups news, Becky and Bert are expecting their first baby on Hallowe'en. Aww.

Jonatha Brooke releases her sixth solo studio album, The Works, on August 26th in the US.

Well, maybe not the best-kept, but certainly one that very little know about, and these guys are amazing. Especially since they're not even old enough to drink. Or to drive. Or to do anything, really. The Best-Kept Underground Indie Rock Secret?

THE UNDERAGE SCENE.

Now, the scene is still growing but it's thriving fast, acne-ridden, and having a lot of sex. Kind of like all the pubescent teens in it. And it's not any crap spewed out from Disney or Nickelodeon either. No, these kids mean business, they play music, and they are rocking it right. Despite age, they are damn good.

Although currently it is best flourishing in the outskirts of London, this rapid growing angst-ridden teen scene isn't limited to only one country. No, better yet, this scene is growing internationally. Highlights? From the UK come potential-packed Cajun Dance Party, who only just completed their high school years. Similarly, from Australia, are Operator Please, who got together for a Battle-of-the-Bands in 2005. From the United States are techno-grunge Tiny Masters of Today whom, although they don't particularly spark my taste, have attracted a lot of attention but still have a lot to learn about stage presence.

Including the small basement underage gigs all over the world, there are a couple places where they all get together. The first one, of course, is MySpace - accessible to anyone who was born after 1980 and has internet. The second, is a massive festival. I am talking about, of course, UNDERAGE FESTIVAL.

Yes, Underage Festival? Sounds silly? I assure you not. Every year in August, Victoria Park hosts thousands of teenagers in spanky skinny jeans and giant sunglasses. Age is not an issue here. These kids are just as hardcore and crazy about music as any adult. This festival is complete with 5 stages, bouncers, crowd-surfers, and moshes. Just without the drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. Nope, this festival is all about the music, the atmosphere, and the people. Hell, we've got some of the best bands on the bill too. This year includes: the Foals, the Gallows, the Mystery Jets, etc.

We might just be kids with questionable fashion. But we've got better hearing, hormones, the angst that dies after 18, and the ability to say "FUCK YOU" to the world without getting arrested. And that, I would proudly bet on, is what gives us credibility.

Best Underage Bands So Far:

- Cajun Dance Party

- Operator Please

- Pull in Emergency

- Lo-Fi Culture Scene

- Bombay Bicycle Club

- Those Dancing Days

- Kitty, Daisy, and Lewis

...and a whole lot more I'm not bothered to write.

So, so, so. Sunny, sunny June. A long, hazy, pleasant month with lots of good memories. And lots of singles to catch up on. Here's the pick of them, including Single of the Week cuts from Mystery Jets (again), Frankmusik, The School, Weezer and Ladyhawke (again). Enjoy...

2nd June 2008

Single of the Week: Mystery Jets – Two Doors Down

Despite recent confirmation that they're still a bit crap live, this is my second single of the week for Mystery Jets this year. While it lacks the subtle charms of 'Young Love', it's clearly a fabtastic pop stomper that throws everything into the mix (including potentially lethal sax solos) and comes out with something that sounds pretty much like Summer 2008 in a box. Sorry Lykke...

Click below for all the rest!

Other good stuff...

Lykke Li – I’m Good I’m Gone [YouTube]
My album of the year so far is Lykke's Youth Novels. This is another great track from it. Lacks the surprise factor of previous SOTW 'Little Bit', but otherwise flawless.

Sebastien Tellier – Divine [YouTube]
Didn't win Eurovision; still awesome.

The Clik Clik – Did You Wrong [YouTube]
File next to the Ting Tings, Alphabeat, etc. Is this the sound of 2008? It'll do.

Jeremy Warmsley - The Boat Song [YouTube]
Folkypoppygeekystrummything. I like.

Joan As Police Woman – To Be Loved [YouTube]
Slick, classy, but ulltimately a little bit too coffee-table.

Nightwish – The Islander [YouTube]
Why do I have a bit of a soft-spot for these preposterous Scandinavian rockers? Silly overblown prog this time, but difficult to hate.

REM – Hollow Man [YouTube]
Another decent enough track from their 'return to form' (tm everyone) album.

* * *

9th June 2008

Single of the Week: Frankmusik - In Step
The horribly named Frankmusik is Vincent Frank, a 21-year-old former beatboxer from Croydon. This is Discovery-era Daft Punk with slightly over-enthusiastic vocals. It's lots of fun. And don't we all want a flashing hula hoop?

Sonny J – Handsfree (If You Hold My Hand) [YouTube]
More sampleadelic fun from the Liverpool man who brought us previous SOTW 'Enfant Terrible.' If anything, this is better, but it's been released in a stronger week...

The Cure – Freakshow [YouTube]
Livelier than of late, and shower their many imitators how it's done.

The Duke Spirit - My Sunken Treasure [YouTube]
Not as good as The Step and the Walk, but also very good.

Kid Carpet - I Dont Want To Fall In Love With You (7”) [YouTube]
A strange, skewed pop genius from a slightly different planet. Or Bristol. Brilliant, as ever.

Laura Marling – Cross Your Fingers / Crawled Out Of The Sea [YouTube]
More of the same, but none the worse for it.

We Are Scientists – Chick Lit [YouTube]
Radio-friendly, solid stuff.

Single of the Week: The School - Let It Slip
Time to return to one of my guilty pleasures again... This is indie-pop loveliness in the Camera Obscura mould, from a Cardiff-based band featuring a former member of The Loves. OK, so maybe the intro rips off British Sea Power's 'Be Gone', but that's more than compensated for by the wonderful silky vocals and 60s-girl-pop breakdown.

And...

Infadels - Free Things For Poor People [YouTube]
Formerly chugalong electro-rock, Infadels seemed to have slapped a lick of Guilty Pleasures-style gloss all over their new material. It's an improvement.

Jamie Lidell – Another Day [YouTube]
There's something charming about Mr. Lidell that makes you forget he's essentially making glossy facsimiles of classic soul, with little new added to the mix. But he'll still never match 'Multiply.'

Jay Reatard - Always Wanting More [YouTube]
Excitable, ADD-afflicted guitar-pop. Good stuff.

The Kills - Last Day of Magic [YouTube]
The first time a Kills record has explicitly reminded me of Jamie's old band Scarfo. This is a good thing.

Presets - This Boy's In Love [YouTube]
Depeche Mode-esque dark electro from Modular band. Pretty good.

White Williams – Violator (7”) [YouTube]
Hypnotic, repetitive guitar/bleeps thing from young Ohio guy on Domino.

* * *

23rd June 2008

Single of the Week: Weezer - Pork And Beans
Probably a slightly out of character choice here. But it's single of the week because it makes me smile in a geeky sorta way. OK, so it's hardly a genuine return to form. But it's roughly a billion times better than anything on the thoroughly rubbish 'Make Believe' album. And they're back to doing what they do (sort of second) best - making brilliant, memorable videos.

It's a slow week...

MGMT - Electric Feel [YouTube]
Not as good as 'Time To Pretend', but sounds fantastic on the radio

Black Kids – Hurricane Jane [YouTube]
While this is competent enough, it does make one wonder if they peaked with their debut, and it's all downhill from here... I could be wrong, though.

The Charlatans – The Misbegotten [YouTube - audio only]
More decent stuff from their New Order-indebted latest record.

Five O Clock Heroes feat Agyness Deyn – Who [YouTube]
WRONG on paper. On record, actually not bad.

Glasvegas – Geraldine [YouTube]
Sort-of-OK stuff from band that are clearly aiming to fill a stadium sometime before the end of the month. It's a bit too much, too soon, for my liking.

Heloise & The Savoir Faire - Illusions (Hot Tonight!) [MySpace]
Seems like the sort of thing I should like. But somehow a bit too... forced?

* * *

30th June 2008

Single of the Week: Ladyhawke - Paris Is Burning
Second Single of the Week in a row (following the briliant 'Back of the Van') from the New Zealand popster with a bag full of classic influences coming together to make something very danceable but also rather beautiful. On live evidence, there's a possibility that Ms. Hawke may well be a bit of a two-hit wonder. And while I'm hoping I'm wrong there, it doesn't take anything away from the shiny brilliance of 'Paris is Burning.'

Other singles available...

Goldfrapp – Caravan Girl [YouTube]
Summery pop loveliness and third excellent single in a row from Alison & co.

Estelle – No Substitute Love [YouTube]
No 'American Boy', but still moderately enjoyable.

Freemasons – When You Touch Me [YouTube]
Actually quite fun OTT dance-pop.

The Long Blondes – Guilt [YouTube]
The relative rubbishness of the second Long Blondes album still makes me a bit sad. This average track, which doesn't really go anywhere, is probably one of the best things on it. Which really isn't saying much. They are better than this...

Paul Heaton - Mermaids & Slaves [YouTube]
Breezier, and more Housemartins-esque, than any recent Beautiful South outings. Quite cheering, in a resolutely uncool sort of way.

Rosie Oddie and the Odd Squad - Cola Coka [YouTube]
Certainly a bit odd. The slow intro gives way to an all-over-the-place knees-up. Can't really make up my mind here: great or awful? One of them.

Tricky – Council Estate [YouTube]
Sound little like anything he's done before, but it's pretty catchy and he handles the solo-vocals pretty well.

Wild Beasts – The Devil’s Crayon [YouTube]
New Kendal indie-rockers. Intriguing stuff.
Phew, nearly there...!

This one is on Mystery Jets, an english band from Eel Pie Island in London (only 120 people live on the island!). Now that you have you're geography straight, let me explain to you why these guys are in position to take over the Brit-Pop scene. First of all, they are bringing back the classic sounds of the Cure, the Beatles, and the Kinks, but in an updated fashion. Second, they've got Erol Alkan working on their albums, which is kind of a big deal. Mystery Jets are soo fun. Their lyrics are all about love and women, exactly like the Beatles in their early years! They're already huge in the UK, but haven't really broken out in the U.S, but they have a lot of potential as a band, and you should not pass them up. Here are a couple fun ones below.

A bientôt mes chers bloggeurs.

The White Stripes - Your Southern Can Is Mine

Franz Ferdinand - Swallow Smile
