Few new mixed dog articles on MixedBreedPets.com:

What is a hybrid dog breeds?
You hear the word Cockapoo, and you think “oh that's just another mutt...” right? Who wouldn't! The truth is, a hybrid [or designer] breed of dog is anything but a mutt. We are going to take some time to explain the difference before you go check out some of the breeds available.

Bullmation - a surprising mix!
When thinking about purchasing a designer breed dog the last mix that comes to your mind is a Bulldog and a Dalmatian, right? Think again! The Bullmation is a hybrid of...

There's a reason Pugs are used to create so many hybrid dog breeds; they're charming, personable, and apartment friendly making them ideal pets for the city dweller. So what happens when you take a breed like the Pug and mix it with the equally loving Boston Terrier? You get a Buggs! Buggs are going to...

I am using Mutt as my e-mail client and I have done that ever since I started using Unix. I have for many months been annoyed by my very ugly theme that I created when I was around 13, but I have never actually spend a few minutes on making something shiny that didn't piss me off.

Inspired from Ciaran McCreesh's Vim theme called Inkpot, I decided to create an inkpot'ish theme for Mutt and here is the result that you can put in your .muttrc:

color attachment color30 color80
color header color10 color80 "^(From|Subject|cc|date|To|X-Spam-Level|User-Agent|X-Mailer):"

color index color30 color80 ~T
color tilde color80 color80

color body color10 color80 "mailto:[-a-z_0-9.]+@[-a-z_0-9.]+"

color quoted color52 color80

color quoted2 color71 color80

Note: This probably only works in urxvt since that's what I am using :)

The Times Global had a canin-teresting news bit today, and I feel that it’s appropriate to add

The Times Global had a canin-teresting news bit today, and I feel that it's appropriate to add it to my blog. Now, I am not an American Doggie, but I admire America as a nation that’s built around individual freedom and competence. Today, I’ve found another reason to admire this country. The Americans appreciate our ca(paw)bility to manage the general public. This bit of news is from Fairhope in Alabama.

My dear fellow canines, have you heard the name Wille Bean Roscoe P Coltrane? He is a handsome 7-year-old Yellow Lab who’s got a very smart and resourceful human assistant called Ms. Tress Turner (Mercury…you’ve got someone you should emulate…especially for her dog-sense.) Now Mr. Coltrane, or Wille Bean as he is generally known, is running for the position of the Town Mayor!

The cynical may say that Wille Bean is probably running for the position of Town Mayor (Dogs), but the news article states otherwise. Wille Bean is running for the Town Mayor of Fairhope. Period.

The bad news is that he may not make it, for the qualifying deadline (July 15) has passed. (Don’t ask me what that means – I don’t know the intricacies of the American Mayor Selection Process.)

However, the article states that there’ve been other dogs who’ve held the position of the town mayor for a Northern Kentucky town. One was a black lab…and another…believe it or not…was just like me – a mixed breed or unknown breed (the article says, “Mutt”! That’s no way to talk about a Mayor!)

So, dogs are doing their bit to instill some sense into the thick human skulls…they are attempting to illustrate what good governance means, even though it many mean neglecting more important jobs such a chewing the toys, dictionaries, shirt-buttons, and so on!

The best part of this news item was a statement by a gentleman called Mr. Kilborn – He said that, “He (Wille Bean) doesn’t have any skeletons in his closet. He’s eaten them all.” Way to go, Wille!

I’ve spent the whole day trying to get Fetchmail and Postfix working on my laptop. Don’t

I've spent the whole day trying to get Fetchmail and Postfix working on my laptop. Don't worry, this isn't going to be yet another one of those tutorials. There are lots of un-understandable tutorials out there, and I don't want to write another. And enough of you have already done it, so it isn't exactly something exotic.

My story: I've been checking my mail over IMAP over an SSH tunnel, using mutt. The problem with this has been that it takes too long to load. The SSH connection takes time, and loading the headers from IMAP takes time. So I had to keep cleaning my mailbox. For sending mail, I used a set sendmail="ssh access.cmi.ac.in -C sendmail ... ", which, although slow, has worked beautifully for me.

Now I have this UPenn email ID. And I want a scheme to check that, and at the same time I want to check my CMI mail too. And mutt doesn't have any nice ways to use multiple inboxes. I don't want to .forward to Gmail since Gmail doesn't have powerful enough filtering capabilities, and in any case writing mails in Gmail is harder, since it does not have an emacs mode.

I tried Evolution. And did some remarkable stuff to get the CMI IMAP server to work with it. After a few days of receiving mails (And I was telling myself, Why didn't I ever do this before?) I needed to reply to a mail.

And then it hit me: I didn't have emacs key bindings.

I tried out many other MUAs, and came to the conclusion that I needed a Fetchmail+Postfix, so that I can use mutt. Fetchmail's great, fairly easy to configure -- I could easily set up IMAP over an SSH tunnel too.

But Postfix (SMTP+SSL) was a pain. I tried lots and lots of things, as of right now I don't remember what exactly finally fixed it. I still don't know how to make special rules for chosing which email account to send from: I suspect that the idea I have in mind will require some configuration on the mutt side too. Here's what I want: On replying to mail that originally was delivered to my CMI address, it should be sent from my CMI address. Otherwise, it should default to my UPenn address. Any Postfix experts out there to help me?

If possible, I would also like a GUI warning when I try to suspend my laptop while there are mail waiting on the mail queue.

goldendoodle

Just moments after David Wroblewski sat down on a shaded bench in the oval-shaped dog run at 72nd Street in Riverside Park, a goldendoodle (half golden retriever, half poodle) jumped up and started licking his face. It was exactly what you might expect would happen to the author of "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle," Mr. Wroblewski's epic novel about a mute boy's extraordinary communion with his dogs.He pushed the dog down gently but firmly. "I'm no great shakes as a trainer," Mr. Wroblewski said. "I'm much more interested in what the dogs choose to do. But they must have manners."

Clearly, dogs are not the only ones in whom Mr. Wroblewski is able to strike a chord. "Edgar Sawtelle," out less than a month, is climbing up the New York Times best-seller list, with more than 196,000 copies in print.

Reviewers in this newspaper and others have rhapsodized about Mr. Wroblewski's outsize storytelling power and his lyrical language. (Janet Maslin described his book in The Times as "the most enchanting debut novel of the summer.")

The diagram to the left (created with $latex Xy-pic$) shows my ~/.mutt hierarchy. I'll explain what each file/directory contains and then I'll concatenate my the main configuration file, ~/.mutt/muttrc.

~/.mutt/aliases.rc - contains a list of my contacts in the format:

alias shortname Firstname Lastname email@address.com

~/.mutt/cache/ - contains a cache my mail headers for faster access

~/.mutt/gpg.rc - contains the commands for use with pgp/gpg encryption

~/.mutt/lists.rc - contains the subscribe command for each mailing-list I am subscribed to. The subscribe command makes Mutt behave differently when reading mailing-lists (changes the default reply-to to the mailing list).

~/.mutt/muttrc - the main configuration file. It is heavily commented below for your convenience.

~/.mutt/muttrc.local{1,2,3} - supplemental configuration files used for when I switch email accounts.

One theory is that there are more unadopted black dogs because there are simply more of them than canines of other shades. "I have heard that black is the dominant gene and in general that's why there are so many of them," says singer/songwriter Emmylou Harris. Active in the animal rescue movement, Harris adopted a big black dog, Bonaparte, years ago. "He was a goofy, poodle-looking dog," she says. "He looked like something Dr. Seuss would have designed." Bonaparte was her "road dog," traveling with her on tour and when he died she went into deep grief. In his honor, she built Bonaparte's Retreat, a rescue and foster operation in her backyard, designed with input from Friedman, and she embarked on a campaign to support pet adoption. She now travels with two "road dogs" - Keeta, a yellow mix dog saved from a 2005 hurricane in Mississippi, and Bella, a black dog with a sugar-dipped muzzle, the white and gray wisps of hair that often give black dogs an aging appearance. "Bella is Keeta's dog," Harris says, a "soulful" black dog of unknown age who came from an urban Nashville shelter just days before she was scheduled to be euthanized.

NIKHIL MORO writes from Mount Pleasant, Michigan: The alleged use of “mine power

NIKHIL MORO writes from Mount Pleasant, Michigan: The alleged use of "mine power" by the Bharatiya Janata Party to lure newly elected legislators from the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) in Karnataka is passé.

The real story is elsewhere.

Star of Mysore reports that swamis "of Veerashaiva mutts" are in an "operation to woo" Siddaramaiah into the BJP. No matter that Lal Krishna Advani continues to condemn "vote-bank politics". Or that Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay rejected politics which impeded “integral humanism.”

Without commenting on what might, or might not, make Siddaramaiah politically eligible, the real story is how the BJP has given a new meaning to 'Swami and Friends': Should swamis, who are presumably living vows of renunciation, associate with particular castes?

Should they be playing such an avowedly political role?

Further, is communal advocacy consistent with Basava's teachings? Might it create disaffected communities, cynicism, bitterness; even lead away from the constitutional egalitarian ideal?

Specifically, should Shivarathri Desikendra Swamiji (of Suttur) and Shivamurthy Shivacharya Swamiji (of Taralabalu) visibly advocate for Veerashaivas? Should Balagangadharanath Swamiji (of Adichunchunagiri) bat for Vokkaligas?

These questions are not new. But they gain importance in the context of the Election Commission’s proposals for electoral reform and continuing reports of Vidhana Sabha candidates abusing caste.

But most interestingly, the swamis' political activism exposes a severe disconnect between theory and practice.

Vedanta, the system of philosophy which forms “the foundation of the spiritual culture of India” (Swami Nikhilananda) lays an unequivocal emphasis on vairagya---a renunciation of temporal objects and of ego.

Swami Vivekananda in Raja Yoga declares renunciation as the “real heart of all spiritual culture,” central to the four yogas of religious practice---Karma, Bhakti, Raja and Gnyana.

The goal of religious practice, Vivekananda writes, is to manifest the

“Divinity [which is] within by controlling nature, external and internal. Do this either by work, or worship, or psychic control, or philosophy---by one, or more, or all of these---and be free. This is the whole of religion. Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or books, or temples, or forms, are but secondary details.”

Separating religion and politics may not come easy in Hindu cultures because Vedanta prescribes merging of the temporal life with spiritual. That’s why Hindu dharma is sometimes described as a pan-religious “way of living”. Still, that’s little threat to Western-style democracy or secularism, given that Hindu religious practice is inclusive and personal (non-proselytizing).

Karnataka has more than 50 large mutts which, together, possess real estate worth numerous billions, manage vast business and philanthropic empires in education or healthcare, and seem to be treated with kid gloves by reverential tax authorities.

The mutts are led by swamis who command the reverence of millions. Many swamis are renowned less for spiritual accomplishment, or for intellectual wherewithal, than for social service.

Which begs the question: What sort of religious gurus do we want?

Should they resemble spiritual giants such as Vivekananda or Ramana? Economic titans like Ratan Tata or Anil Ambani? Storytelling maestros like Morari Bapu or Bhadragiri Achyut Das? Intellectual hulks such as Rajneesh or Rajaji?

The "Veerashaiva swamis", acting as BJP agents, are recruiting a six-time legislator whose persona is underwritten less by statesmanship than by an abiding frustration. From being part of a 1980s’ “dream team of second-line leaders” Siddaramaiah today seems clueless to confront Deve Gowda’s Machiavellian politics.

So why is the BJP recruiting him other than to access the substantial Kuruba vote which he controls?

What should be swamis' social role, if any?

Should they indulge in scholarly pursuits---explications of philosophy, tradition and ritual? Give us new interpretations of text? Prescribe tests for dharmic hypotheses? Or run schools and hospitals?

Or act as agents of political parties?

They should know best who own the least.

Photographs: (Left to right) Shivamurthy Shivacharya swamiji of the Taralabalu mutt, Visvesateertha swamiji of the Pejawar mutt, Deshikendra swamiji of the Suttur mutt, Balagangadharnath swamiji of the Adichunchunagiri mutt

The movie dog with the greatest personality of all time is a completely unknown to most people. In fact, the movies themselves are hardly known to most. Long before Linda Hunt won an Oscar for playing a man, Spooks the dog should have won a doggie Oscar for playing Daisy the dog in the series of Blondie movies made in the 40s.

The Blondie film series was about as perfectly cast as any movie based on recognizable characters could ever hope to be. It's hard to imagine anyone other than Penny Singleton playing Blondie and as for Arthur Lake, well, it's as if he channeled Dagwood Bumstead. In addition, Larry Simms as Baby Dumpling, later named Alexander as he grew older, is probably the least cloying and annoying child actor of his time, maybe of all time. And then there's Daisy.

Daisy, the Bumsteads' dog, appeared in all the movies and was a vital component in all of them. This dog was truly amazing, able to express more range than Keanu Reeves and Bruce Willis combined. Well, okay, that's not really all that amazing. Daisy was able to portray excitement, fear, and joy more expressively than Reeves, Willis and every actor who is even tenuously related to the Brat Pack. Then toss in the cast of Friends as well. What I'm saying is that Daisy could act rings around not only every other movie canine, but 95% of the actors making movies today.

Multiple personalities? I thought people paid to psychoanalysts to get rid of these!? For Chutney and Stomper's birthday, we made a pact to split the cooking - she had the humans and I had the furry monsters covered plus my trademark, Oreo Cupcake.

For three hours, it was insanity. My cheeks were aching from all the smiling I did because, it was just that hilarious.

LOVE BUG - Copper Ho

Yes, I am acutely aware that there's a little copper love fest going on but he is SO adorable. The youngest but the biggest. Scruffy has got such a great coat and looked dashing in his yellow/green rugby outfit. His possessiveness over his owners is mush-worthy. Chutney could not care less if I was hugging Copper, Scruffy, Brandi, Casey or Stomper. He would sell me for a piece of bone, I tell you!

In this bohemian celebration, Max the dog, the poet, the dreamer, is back. His struggle for acceptance since Hey Willy, See the Pyramids has not been easy--Max has had to post his poems on a wall at the corner of Pastrami and Salami Streets for his fellow New Yorkers to see. Even as he pines for Paris, Max admits that New York City is fine by him: " . . . a jumping, jazzy city, a shimmering, stimmering triple-decker sandwich kind of city." In this unique blend of reality and fantasy, intermingled words and images seem influenced by such strange sources as Mamie Eisenhower's wardrobe, the Jazz Age and the Theatre of the Absurd. Banter that rings with sophistication is well matched by the esoteric illustrative approach readers have come to expect from Kalman. Although there is much to glean from an unhurried single reading, this fanciful creation yields its greatest treasures through repeated visits.
Book by Maira Kalman
