For what it’s worth, it was Linux that really got me into forums. Because it is community-deve

For what it's worth, it was Linux that really got me into forums. Because it is community-developed software, the various parts of the buffet are prepared at different rates. This is most consistently true of the user-documentation projects, and it seems that the best documentation is to be found on forums and wikis. Any problem a newbie, noob or gatecrasher runs into is likely to have been encountered before by others. They plug the forums, and someone in-the-know comes up with an answer.

I have also made overtures towards the documentation projects of a couple of software packages, and learned something of the struggle that is involved. The documentation projects seem divided between those who manage revisions with a program called gettext, those who establish wikis which are harvested for new releases, and those who host files through an administration group. This influences the speed and cohesiveness of the writing and translation projects, as does the involvement of a corporate benefactor. I found frustration with the fact that the debate about version control and editing systems often eclipses discussion of the actual text, and the fact that the writers often write like programmers, or non-native English speakers. I'll help if I can.

Nonetheless, I have learned that once a distribution is chosen, with it's collection of forums, wikis and HTML How-tos and FAQs, there are many places left to explore, some of which provide better answers. I offer, therefore, my current hit-list of information resources for music on Linux. I plan to add to this list on an ongoing basis, so this post will become a page as soon as I can set it up. I also invite comments in order to expand this list over time.

General Linux Musicians Information Resources

Forums and wikis

Many of my current interests were inspired by the LinuxMusicians forum, which I try to visit regularly. Associated with this is Planet LinuxMusicians, a webzine carrying news about Linux music software and distributions. I also found the Linux Audio User's Guide, which provides links to a selection of distributions, and some very helpful HowTo and FAQ links.

Blogs

There are Several blogs which provide a wealth of information about news, and specific activities within the world of music on Linux. Here are a few I've found useful.

Dave Phillips, who writes for Linux Journal, covers many topics related to music on Linux. His articles include tutorials, news and profiles of software and hardware vendors associated with linux. I plan to spend as much time with this one as I can.

Brian's Bedroom is an independent blog focused on UbuntuStudio and freeware, and is an example of what my blog aught to look like if I wasn't such a scatter-brain. This one is linked to from several of the forums, because it provides good tutorials, and is well organized as a site, to say nothing of a blog.

Distributions

Music on Linux begins with distributions. So far, I have hung-on to UbuntuStudio, while flirting with the Debian based 64Studio, and am now also downloading a liveCD Distro called Musix. I am also scratching my chin at a liveCD distro called Dynebolic; which enables streaming AV web-cast from almost any computer, using consumer-grade inputs and web-cams. One of the important issues within Linux is to use a run-time kernel with streaming-audio and recording applications. These distributions, which are based on more universal and popular distributions such as Debian, Ubuntu and Knoppix, have optimized kernels and user-interfaces, with collections of software which are expected to work well together.

Hardware

If you are looking for a quick list of compatible hardware items: one site I found is Linux Studio Pro. It is affilliated with the online store zZounds, and provides a pretty good idea of which hardware works with which sound architecture (ALSA, FreeBob), and who your friends are. It's a pretty impressive list, which features M Audio, Mackie, Edirol, Terratec, CME, RME, and a host of other manufacturers of interfaces and midi controllers. (my lexicon Alpha is not featured, but I'll try to write another post about that). The site reads like the browsers on many software-download sites, with pictures, purchase links, and tabbed info-boxes. The ALSA project also maintains a comprehensive dynamic list of sound-card manufacturers and user experiences.

Interface Software

The Linux sound architecture begins with ALSA the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture project, which focuses on how the computer talks to all our USB and FireWire bits; and FreeBob, which seems to catch the stragglers that ALSA hasn't caught up with. Most of the home-user media-players take over from here. But DAW, processing, MIDI, and Synthesizer/Sequencer programs need something special to mediate between them, and deal with the problems of latency and monitoring. For that, JACK has become the eureka we all feared, which provides a multiple channel digital patch-bay, with zero or very near zero latency. It is also a bit finicky to set up, and it is worth hitting the tutorials on the Linux Audio Users Guide to work it out. For better or Worse, it helps Linux cope with the hundreds of LADSPA effects which are available, layered over multiple MIDI and 44Khz (you can go higher, with an optimized system) audio tracks, in real-time.

Sound and Music Application Software

So now that we've fussed with all that, why did we go to the trouble? To record our folk songs? To produce electronic music? To beat-mix, scratch, sample and control live PA shows or multi-media? To score our compositions, edit video, experiment with tangible interface instruments, master our recordings or get that killer guitar effect we couldn't fit on the pedalboard?

It's all there, or at least you're totally on its home turf. It would be silly to try and talk about all of the programs in one post, because there are dozens of them in my system (Debian contains many curios of the software world, another story). Instead, I will give you my current hit-list of programs which I plan to spend some time with right away.

Recording and Composition

Ardour is the DAW program which leads the way in Linux, and was authored by the same programmer who developed JACK. It features the ability to configure the bus architecture dynamically, for different kinds of projects, and is gradually adding MIDI functionality as well. It was written to become a contender for live sound control, is being ported into OS X, and is being sponsored by the SAE Institute.

Audacity also makes itself at home here, with little of the struggle involved in making it work on a Windows system. It talks directly to ALSA, but I have mostly used it as a scratch pad and file converter, with occasional use for simple editing. Soon I intend to try it for sample and loop editing. It uses LADSPA plugins, so you won't be limited to the simplified collection which comes with Audacity (helpful as it is). You'll still need to install LAME to export MP3s.

MusE and Rosegarden seem to be wrapped around the buffet of electronic composition activities, such as sequencing, scoring, and MIDI control. I have yet to explore these in depth, but they are both quite comprehensive.

Mastering

JAMin provides a suite of tools to sweeten the mix and prepare it for various stereo playback scenarios. It provides a 30 band and 1023 band "hand-drawn" EQ section, , in addition to four bands of compression, limiting and gain control. It works with JACK, (JACK Audio Mastering Interface) accomplishes processing using LADSPA, and allows recording 'scenes' in which different parts of a recording may be mastered. The home page provides useful information about the craft of mastering, and simple, straightforward documentation of the program itself.

Virtual Instruments and Performance Applications

Mixxx Is a DJ system which supports several MIDI controllers, but can stand on its own without them. Working DJs contributed to the programming and choice of features included in this software, and it shows. After the initial turn-it-on learning curve, the interface is very intuitive and responsive - take it from a guy who rarely spins more than one record at a time - that was my night off, no offense meant, of course...what was I saying again. I'm going to play with this a little.

SooperLooper is a live-looping sampler - and to think I was thinking of buying a stomp box. It is a JACK client which enables multiple channels of loops which can be overdubbed, and manipulated on the fly. If I can plug this thing the way it looks like I can, there's a-gonna be some changes in the live show. Processing might provide some limitations, but I already have a way around that: analog mixing. And only because my hands might be too busy to fuss with a QWERTY. But then, it accepts input from a foot controller (wait a minute, didn't I read that my zoom did something like that?...), hmmm. I'll let you know, alright?

When it's time to build beats, Hydrogen lays at your feet what other step-sequenced drum programs hide in the mysterious depths of their interfaces. It contains several drum kits, and sweats through syncopation without sniveling. It also exports songs as multiple tracks, synchronizes with DAW and sequencer programs, and works with MIDI. There are additional percussion kits available online.

Synthesizers

The Gnome Desktop provides a virtual MIDI keyboard, controllable from your QWERTYs. ALSA also works with MIDI and controllers from M Audio, Edirol, CME and others found on the Linux Studio Pro site. From there it is possible to control several synthesis programs and plugins. This will be updated on the Page version of this post.

Effects

LADSPA is the Linux Audio Developers Simple Plugin API. That's effect's racks, for us old-school music-freaks, and there are many to choose from. Dynamics, delays and reverberation, phase and flange, pitch control, distortion, amplifier and speaker modeling, and other obscurities are provided from several angles. For now, all I can say is, explore. I will end out testing several of them, and I'll let you know when I end out taking a liking to some of them.

Creox is a real-time guitar effects suite which works as a JACK plugin. The site I linked to contains links for related effects projects. It comes with UbuntuStudio, and is available within other distributions.

Other Programs

GNU Denemo is the OpenOffice-Writer of music-scoring in Linux. This isn't something I make time for often, because I like to improvise everything lately; but I think sooner or later I'm going to have to start generating charts so it's a little easier for the pros to sit in.

Here’s a post studio update on what’s happened the past two days I’ve been in it.

Here's a post studio update on what's happened the past two days I've been in it. So day two (Tuesday or Wednesday of week before last) in the studio was full of a surprise. I was feeling all ready to record "Don't Let Go [Sarah's Song]" when I got out into the studio. After a few minutes of trying and failing to make the chorus work with the metronome, I started sleuthing and discovered that the chorus has two measures of 5/4, followed by 3 of 4/4, and that repeats twice. So that put up a roadblock in my recording, but the metronome is always holding me down anyway. So that day was a wrap with the fruit being that I am a crazy songwriter. Silly, is what I mean by crazy. Then, we have day three. It had similar feelings going in, except the song was now "Am I Wrong?" I started recordig, and realized to my chagrin (did I really use that word? Kept it for laughs) that I hadn't practiced nearly enough. So that also ended with a bit of a reality check. I still had the positive result of that sample you can hear at purevolume.com/stephenwspencer but the Moral of the story is that I need to practice more before recording. That's a recording update for y'all. Cheers,

I hope for you so long
and went so far
that there are no signs to return
and there is no path to follow or light

We are older
but we are here
Now the branches are black
too late for complaints, I should not have gone

The crosses that you leave
are behind me
my sweet princess
your field of strawberries, does not grow in April

I've been awarded a Tree of Happiness by livingisdetail at One Little Detail. I have to list six things that make me happy. There are obviously many, many things, so I didn't want to just mention any old thing like poker or fresh car smell. Both of which make me very happy.

Six things that make me happy:

1. Playing guitar - I've done it for a while now and there's no better escape. I plug in my iPod to the stereo in my room, shut all the doors and windows, crank up the amp and bust it out. I wish I could say I rock out like they do on TV, jump around on the bed, kicking shit over, but... someone would probably walk in and see me. That would be... embarrassing. The best part about playing guitar along with the music is fantasising you're playing a gig. It's almost impossible for me to even listen to music without pretending it's me playing. The fantasies of my early days were stadium sized shows but have since shrunk down to playing a few covers in front of my incredibly impressed friends.

2. Surfing - I wish I could say I've done it since forever and am absolutely awesome at it, but that's a total lie. I only started last summer and haven't been in a few months. Go to the beach in a Victorian winter? Yeah right! There really is no feeling like riding a wave. I like snowboarding too, but it doesn't quite compare for me. I'd say it has something to do with the water. I've always been a good swimmer and could probably spend days on end in a pool if I didn't turn into a shrimp. Snow however, bloody hurts. I'll take the potential of shark bites and cracks against a rocky ocean floor over a bruised ass and flat face anyday.

3. Movies - I am what I would describe as a wannabe film buff. I'm nowhere near knowledgeable enough about movies to be considered a buff, but I'd say I know more than the average person. I also like arthouse films, or weird little independent films, like the non-actor type films from Gus Van Sant. My favourite movie is Donnie Darko, again, probably because it's a little weird. Unlike most people I have no problems with foreign films, in fact they can be a lot more interesting because they don't always follow Hollywood conventions. It frustrates the hell out of me my mates only ever want to watch comedies or action movies. Some of them find Pulp Fiction too slow, bloody hell!

4. Music - I know I said playing guitar, but this is different. There is nothing better than buying a brand new album and sinking your teeth into it. I've written about this before. The best part is that albums are often a story on their own, and the second best part is that most of the people out there in the world don't see the music the way you do if you know this. A song will hit the airwaves and people like the sound of it and it goes to number one, but just cranking it up doesn't compare to knowing what it's about and the rest of the story behind it. I'm going to list some of my all time favourite albums one day.

5. Driving - And driving alone. I do my best thinking in the car when I'm driving, but only if there's no traffic around. If there is even one car near my ass end I can't concentrate on my thoughts. It's also the best place to listen to an album from start to finish, or even listen to no music at all and just clear your head.

6. Cities - It was hard to think of a sixth thing, but I think cities is a good one. I like cities, what can I say. I reckon every city is like a living breathing person. It has its own personality, its own life, it ages but regenerates, and has enemies and friends, and all of these change with time. The best part is the kind of people that live in it, and then there are the buildings. I could spend the rest of my life just exploring the cities of the world. When I was still studying in the CBD I would sometimes just spend my breaks walking around Melbourne and getting a feel for the place.
