So, I was listening to Pandora again today. Ron Block (from Alison Krauss & Union Station) was featured from his album "Far Away Land". I love this one song. So, I head to Amazonmp3.com, search for Ron Block, click buy MP3 (99 cents). From their I had to download their music manager. I was a bit concerned, but it took about 30 seconds maximum. Once I clicked OK, the file downloaded (in about 15 seconds). The really cool part is it automatically posted the song to my iTunes . . . without any effort from me!

I went ahead and purchased another track. Since the softward is installed, it automatically grabbed the file and downloaded it. My credit card is already logged with amazon, so there really is just ONE click to buy the song. In less than a minute I'm listening in iTunes.

Good work, Amazon.

Essentially, most of us desire to be difference-makers in our world. Hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars later, we find ourselves still asking ourselves essential questions regarding our effectiveness in this huge world.

HOW can we be most EFFECTIVE? How do make the IMPACT we so deeply wish to make?

While many of us — justifiably so– utilize website rating services, spend countless hours browsing and commenting — we must be real and transparent. (Yes, especially in the political year!) So, what ARE the most important bullet points for actually acquiring something that is vital and real in this amoeba-like WEB 2.0 gestation?

First of all, as a very fallible guy with some terrible weaknesses, I share these thoughts — not as an elitist — but as a life-long learner. It is my heart’s desire to hear “well done…faithful one” when this trip’s all over! (Not planning on a reide soon.)

MUSIC + TECHNOLOGY + LOGIC = Music Technologists

IMPACT is essentially INFLUENCE. A basic recipe could include these primal ingredients when building a website that makes impact.

1. Patience. Surprised? Rome wasn’t built in a day. Actually, Web 2.0 is BIGGER than Rome! So, give it some time. John Maxwell states that we underestimate the power of TODAY. (TODAY MATTERS)

2. Practice. Remember the college practice room? Why would a college make the huge investment for rooms where students can only rehearse? Obviously, practice can lead to perfection.

3. Post. Yes. Post your thoughts. Post your knowledge and experiences that do have value to you and possibly to others. Post should be embedded in sound leadership principles vs. fluff. (Write to inform vs. writing to impress.)

4. Publish. Now that you’ve written it… push the post button! “The only thing we have to fear is… fear itself.” Never allow the fear of rejection by others on the stifle your creative thoughts. (None of us knows it all nor gets it right 100% of the time.) Publishers are those who have something VALUABLE to share.

Remember the 4P’s as you build your WEB 2.0 world!

What’s happening in YOUR world?

So, I wanted to write a quick post to let y'all know what's going on with me between now and Sunday. The reason being the fact that between now and then, I have an exam (Hebrew) and a paper due (Political Science). On top of that, we have to get ourselves packed up and prepared for a weekend in Michigan, leading worship at what we call the "Worker Weekend" for our summer camp (Impact). Honestly, I have so much to do between now and Sunday that I kind of wish I could drown myself.

Soooooo...that only leaves little time to blog. But I will try to document the weekend (the setup and tear-down, and all of the little nerdy details that some of you may care about).

So, until the next post...fare-thee-well.

I just read over at Music Thing about Melodyne's new breakthrough Direct Note Access technology . This software makes my mind hurt and I can only begin to try to fathom the potential uses and how much cookie-cutter pop culture music will abuse the flexibility and power (as they already have with pitch and rhythm correction). Either way I really want to try out the program and see if it is really capable of the powerful and unheard of concepts that it claims to do with ease.

What does this imply in terms of REELIN' em' N in 2008?

Did you know... that most normal, whatever that means, students in 2008 -- at least on the secondary level -- are savvy. I'm mean... REAL tech savvy? Ever asked a fish to swim? Or, asked a butterfly to show you how to dance on a hot summery day? Some things are sort of just common knowledge. No explanation necessary.

NOW HEAR THIS!!

Just 5 months into our brand new course @ Bremen High School (www.bremencs.com/~jwilborn), we have tons of kids asking me every single week "Hey! I hear your class is really cool. Gonna offer it next year? ... Yeah, like. I "wanted" to take it this Fall but... you know. BUT I'M DEFINITELY gettin' in next Fall.

ROCKIN' and A-REELIN' 'em' N

These kids are podcasting out the wazzoo. News Reporter Podcasts, HOW I MADE MY OWN PODCAST podcast, + more.

Last Monday evening, I took a 15 year old girl - Level 1 student - and a 16 year old boy -- Level 2 student -- and had them tell the BOARD OF EDUCATION why they LOVE Music Technology.

GET THIS

The boy sayz... "You wanna know why I get OUT OF BED every day and come to school? For THIS!!!" He proceeds to play his 4 and 1/2 minute podcast with every eye glued to the wall observing some totally incredible stuff.

HIS JOURNEY

1. Pro Tools recorded his guitar in 3 tracks at 160 beats using a click track. Sings a couple more tracks.

2. Garageband. Next day. Creates/Edits drum tracks. Adds his own bass guitar part.

3. Imports Garageband file via his jump drive into Pro Tools. Clicks, drags. ShaBANG. This guy has his OWN original music totally self-produced ready for upload.

4. Creates a tutorial podcast on HOW I CREATED THIS PODCAST USING MY OWN MUSIC.

5. Takes the iMac home for the weekend from school. Works ALL DAY SATURDAY on it.

6. He and She sell the BOARD OF ED on WHY YOU NEED TO SUPPORT/FUND this program.

7. Ends with THIS IS WHAT I LIVE FOR!

What does this imply in terms of REELIN' em' N IN 2008?

Speaking of Amazon MP3

In my previous post, I mention Amazon MP3 briefly. It’s a known fact that iTunes is the leade

In my previous post, I mention Amazon MP3 briefly. It's a known fact that iTunes is the leader in online distribution of music. That's all well and good and they've definitely changed the face of how music is purchased by consumers. My beef with iTunes is that in order to play [most of] purchased tracks is to have an iPod. Now, I own an iPod and will probably never use anything else (it's that good). However, I like to stream music from my computer to my TiVo (and any other device and future device that supports the MP3 format). Well, iTunes is AAC format . . . so, no TiVo or otherwise (at least not easily).

I say all that to say this: Amazon.com has an online store with high bitrate (i.e. great sounding) files that are totally unprotected. That means you can move them to whatever player you want, whatever computer you want . . . it's all good. My thoughts are also on the automotive future (if I ever have the dough to get a new car!). Online hard drives are on the market, most of which support MP3.

Aaaand, the Amazon store's pricing is on par with iTunes if not cheaper in many cases.

Now, I'll still probably buy my favorite artists on CD so I have the prisine quality if I need it as well as a backup. But those odds and ends that I have ringing in my head . . . well, 89 to 99 cents aint bad . . .

So I’m so unbelievably wired from drinking too much tea yesterday that I couldn’t sleep.

So I'm so unbelievably wired from drinking too much tea yesterday that I couldn't sleep. A flash of inspiration hits and I have an idea for the most AMAZING tune. Unfortunately to do what I wanted to do (connecting this that and the other and re-modulating it through some other thingy) required a few more audio cables than I actually have.. as I only have about 2 that aren't beyond repair. So I decided I might as well put an order in for some more as I had my credit card handy, and I went for some *very* reasonably priced ones from Thomann.de.

That was at about half one last night. This morning I wake up at 9 to find they've TEXTED me saying my order has been dispatched already. Now that's what I like to hear! I can't think of anywhere in the UK that does that. In fact I just got an email this morning from a nameless UK site saying an order I made *last week* has only just been *processed*... Maybe I'm just an impatient victim of online retail. It's just a shame the stuff I want to buy is never in shops. 'Trapdoor' complete collection on DVD? Count Duckula t-shirt? I think HMV should get a foothold on the market of retro junk.

Ooooh and I want this poster :)

Well, I stumbled on to an old favorite. Pandora.com now has Genre channels. I just fired up the symphonic classical channel (yeah, I know) and it sounds great! If you haven't tried Pandora, head to www.pandora.com and check it out. If you work while online, this is just too good to pass up. Here's my other rant on the subject. Happy listening!
