I just wrote an essay on how, in recent times, and even as far back as the 20's- the mass media are being controlled by 'the market'. If you think that, in this country, we have a 'free media' then you are wrong. Of course, it's much better here than in the US. The vast majority of news publications and broadcasting stations are owned by private networks. These private networks have other interests, their main interest being profit of course. The power of the advertising industry and the competition for a share in their vast wealth means that you are unlikely to hear (in the US at least) negative reports about major advertised products.

[caption id="attachment_320" align="alignleft" width="104" caption="Herman and Chomsky argued there are 5 filters our news goes through"][/caption]

Chomsky and Herman put together a study called 'The Propaganda Model' ( 1988 ) where they detail that the media perpetuate the ideas of the elite and wealthy.

What interests me most however, and what I find is most evident here in the UK, is the giant blurring of the lines between what is 'news' and what is 'advertising'. It seems more and more, we are being fed 'news' which is really just an advertisment to go and buy/try something.

Here is the most recent example; but before I go, I want you to think about how many more examples of this you can see and them maybe post replies telling us about them.

ITN News- 6 minutes ago: 14.06 16 August 2008

An orange which can be peeled in 35 seconds is to go on sale for the first time in the UK.

The launch is in a bid to win back consumers who have lost the patience to eat them. Sales of the fruit fell 2 per cent last year.

Sainsbury's said the new Australian orange can be peeled "in an average 35 seconds" and is 50 per cent sweeter than other varieties.

Peter Lyons said: "We are confident our new easy-peel orange will save our customers a huge amount of time and bother. This is an incredibly convenient citrus for people to peel and eat on the move or at their desks."

Garry Cirillo, commercial director at suppliers MMG, said: "In its home market in Australia this orange is big news and has a strong following.

"The proof of the orange is definitely going to be in the eating. If consumer feedback is as good as we expect, we are really hopeful that we can increase volumes and introduce the variety to other growers around the world to increase availability."

The Australian growing season means the variety will only be available in the UK until September 9.

Fox News Host Refuses To Talk About Russia-Georgia War,
Insists On Covering Edwards’ Affair»

By: SATVAM

Yesterday, Russia launched a major military offensive against Georgia, which Georgia has called “a state of war.” Nearly two thousand people have died and the conflict risks sparking a wider war. Also yesterday, former senator John Edwards admitted to having an extramarital affair in 2006.

Fox News has decided which story is worthy of more coverage. Today, host Gregg Jarrett interviewed PBS’s Bonnie Erbe. “We have these huge stories going on like the one you’re reporting in Georgia,” Erbe noted when asked about Edwards. Jarrett, however, completely ignored Erbe’s comment on Georgia and continued to talk about Edwards, offering praise for the National Enquirer:

JARRETT: You know, his excuse for lying is absolutely stunning. He claims he denied the affair because the reporting by the National Enquirer was “99 percent wrong.” Well, so far, they’ve been about 100 percent right.

Throughout the segment, Jarrett refused to talk about anything except for Edwards’s affair:

ERBE: The American public have told pollsters, this political season they want substance. Both these candidates have expressed support for allowing Georgia into NATO. … We could have been on the verge of nuclear war. Those are the kinds of the things that the American public wants to see discussed.

JARRETT: Right. You know, but getting back to Edwards, during the Monica Lewinsky affair, Edwards absolutely ripped into Bill Clinton.

Erbe called the Edwards story “water cooler talk,” noting again that Edwards’s affair is “not the stuff the American public wants to hear about in this election cycle.” Again, Jarrett wholly ignored her, responding with more Edwards talk:

JARRETT: Well it’s amazing, he thought could get away with it, and if he had become the Democratic nominee, my goodness.

Usually I don't mind not living in London. I mean, I never have, so why miss it?

But then I read Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, or Un Lun Dun by China Mieville or I hear that David Tennant is playing Hamlet against Patrick Stewart's Claudius and I really REALLY want to go and see it.

And then I read this kind of thing (a review of the top 10 performances of Hamlet by the Guardian's critic) and start to look at jobs advertised online ... More on it here.

Gillian took me on a journalist's tour of London in 48 hours that started with Fleet Street, long after the media had departed.

We visited a traditional journalist's pub where, she said, ink ran in the beer, there were old chaps who'd stood their ground against Murdoch's men and who hadn't worked since and where I could get a real English pint without any of the fuss.

However, it was Waitangi Day in New Zealand and all the ex-pat Kiwis on their big OE were charging round on the tube wearing t-shirts with the map of the Underground but with the place names crossed out and places like Johnsonville, Geraldine, Te Awamutu, Cambridge etched on instead.

The pub was showing Classic All Blacks' matches and serving Steinlager and was full youths in black shirts "talking loud in a Kiwi accent" including, but not limited to, a couple of guys I'm sure I remember from Waikato.

It was quite surreal and perhaps the best way to visit London.

But I would like to see Tennant's Hamlet. I very much would.

Hat tip: Neil Gaiman for his very funny take on the photos.

SMARTMONEY IS HALF own

Murdoch Plans Global Dow Index, Like It or Not

By Dan Burrows
August 7, 2008

SMARTMONEY IS HALF owned by Dow Jones, which is itself owned by News Corp. (NWS1), so when Chairman Rupert Murdoch unveiled plans this week for a new global index to complement Dow Jones's famed U.S. industrial average, our initial reaction was, "Great idea, boss!"

That was quickly followed by the realization that the investing world probably doesn't need another benchmark — and that that won't much matter as to its success.

A spokeswoman for Dow Jones said the company is still working on the methodology for the Global Dow and plans to announce the full details when it launches sometime in the fourth quarter. The components, as they are with the Dow Jones Industrial Average, will be chosen by the editors of The Wall Street Journal.

With new exchange-traded funds sprouting like mushrooms there are sure to be some takers. Expect to see at least three ETFs based on the Global Dow — one to track the benchmark, one that's leveraged to double its performance and an ultra-short version to capture gains when it tanks.

And why stop there? A passively managed mutual fund would do well to grab some inflows. Why shouldn't Fidelity or T. Rowe Price (TROW2) offer up no-load funds indexed to the Global Dow for 401(k) plans?

Never mind that the investing landscape is practically polluted with competition. Dow Jones Indexes, MSCI (MXB3), Russell, S&P, FTSE — they've got developed and emerging markets covered in any number of combinations and permutations. In case you were wondering, MSCI offers an index that covers the world, excluding Australia (which, curiously, is the home of our beloved chairman).

We suspect the Global Dow, like the doomestic Dow, is more about marketing than licensing. But that doesn't mean it can't avoid some of the Dow's problems in its constitution to be more useful. The biggest knocks on the Dow are that it's too narrow and that it's weighted by share price rather than market cap. You can buy the Diamonds ETF (DIA4) to track the Dow, but why bother? With only 30 companies, there are far more diversified ways to get exposure to blue-chip stocks. Meanwhile, the price weighting gives International Business Machines (IBM5) more influence on the index than Exxon Mobil (XOM6), even though the energy giant boasts more than twice the market value of the technology company.

What little Dow Jones has said about the new index gives us some hope that it will do a better job representing the global market than the Dow industrials do the U.S. Murdoch made clear that developing markets, emerging economies and alternative energy will factor prominently in its construction.

And if they mess it up on the first go round, there's always room for improvement. Of the original 12 members of the Dow first published in 1896, only General Electric (GE7) still remains. (See chart below.)

It's a testament to successful marketing that when people ask, "How'd the market do today?" they usually mean the Dow, even though the broader S&P 500 index is a truer barometer of stocks. A Global Dow that can grab the public's imagination and accurately benchmark world equities could be useful. And at the very least? It would probably encompass Australia too.

I have been spending a great deal of time taking a look at the candidates for President and was leaning toward Obama ... HOWEVER.. I REFUSE TO VOTE FOR WHOEVER RUPERT MURDOCH SUPPORTS so now I am confused exactly what to do... See, based on my spiritual beliefs whoever this guy supports is likely to be "The Anti-Christ" and Obama "APPEARS TO BE" too nice a guy to hang that shingle on him.

I simply cannot vote for McCain because he is aligned with the NEO-CON agenda and though refusing it was endorsed by the vile and repulsive JOHN HAGEE who is openly a Dispensational CHRISTIAN ZIONIST.

The following article appeared in the DAILY NEWS at : http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2008/05/12/2008-05-12_rupert_murdoch_sings_barack_obamas_prais.html

Rupert Murdoch sings Barack Obama's praises at Bush-bashing fest

(photo showing NY Post Endorsement of Obama)

How bizarre. Not only did Conservative media overlord Rupert Murdoch walk into a den of liberals Friday night — he was actually heard speaking warmly about Barack Obama!

Murdoch and wife, Wendi, turned up at the party for Arianna Huffington's book, "Right Is Wrong: How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution, and Made Us All Less Safe." Rupe arrived just in time to hear former Viacom topper Tom Freston salute the Huffington Post founder for "galvanizing opinion against this administration and other miscreants." Freston's co-host, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, concurred, "She's restored the rule of law."

You would've expected the owner of Fox News and the New York Post to bolt. Instead, he went up to Huffington, a former Republican who has known him for 30 years, and started chatting enthusiastically about Obama's strong showing in last week's primaries.

"It's a great day for Obama," Murdoch said. "Very good. The wall broke."

Some Murdoch-watchers have gone so far as to speculate that one or more of his newspapers may endorse Obama over John McCain. One confidant cautions, "Rupert really does admire Obama. But he hasn't decided yet about endorsements."

Whatever he's got up his sleeve, Murdoch was among the last to leave the Chambers Hotel bash. Also there were Larry David (in town shooting Woody Allen's new movie), Donna Karan, Les Moonves and Julie Chen, Charlie Rose, Griffin Dunne, Sandy Gallin, and Daily News Chairman and Publisher Mortimer B. Zuckerman.

So what to do?... Maybe I should vote McCain because at least i would save Obama from becoming the beast.

I may not agree with some of the verbage used in the following.. but I do agree with most of the ideas and thinking in this case.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
FR: THE PURPLE FOX:
link: http://xerxesqados.livejournal.com/88781.html

Perhaps our freedom is less threatened by our own government and more by someone else. We've heard about Google and Yahoo complying with Chinese censors and not displaying blacklisted sites in their search results. We've heard about how China's denying journalists covering the Olympics access to their own blogs. But that's all in China, right? It's just those two billion people, and the people who go there. It really sucks, but at least we still have the First Amendment here in the USA, right?

Well, not really. See, there's a man named Rupert Murdoch who likes money a lot and doesn't care what country it comes from. He owns this company called News Corporation, and it owns a lot of things. Namely, the Dow Jones, The Wall Street Journal, everything with Fox in the name, and, um, MySpace.

Anyway, Murdoch. He likes money. And guess who has a lot of it? China. Now, in case you haven't been reading The Wall Street Journal lately, it hasn't exactly said anything bad about China lately. In fact, they're kinda nice to China. Fox News is avoiding talking too much about Chinese human rights violations too. Has anyone noticed this?

Yes, apparently other people did.

So, let's see...Murdoch is married to a Chinese citizen...still trying to tap the Chinese market...and tends to cater the content of his media to appeal to people who, on average, have more money (Republicans)...naw, his company's love affair with China can't have anything to do with all their money.

Okay, so how is this news, you ask? Of course Rupert Murdoch's an unscrupulous scumbag, we know that already! The problem is, he's not the only one. He's just the pioneer of douchebaggery in this world.

I know Google's mantra is not to be an evil corporation. But honestly, if they see Murdoch pulling this crap and still making money, they'll realize that credibility is less profitable than pandering to the rich guys, and if the public is giving money to people who do that, maybe it's not evil!

Now, I know a lot of people who like News Corporation's products will tell me this is just a case of the free market being all powerful. Actually, the free market reigning supreme would be News Corporation losing money because their customers are not going to stand for this crap.

I happen to know a lot of Bill O'Reilly fans like the idea of knowing the truth and not being lied to. It's been hard to convince them of the fact that Fox News is not as "fair and balanced" as they say it is. The evidence here is overwhelming, though. Every non-Murdoch-owned outlet outside of China has prominently reported on the fact that China is, um, not so nice. Even George W. Bush says they shouldn't be doing the things they do, as reported by the, um, Conservative Voice. Foxnews.com has a similar story, but I had to Google "china bush site:foxnews.com" to find it. Searching "china bush" on FoxNews.com's home page doesn't bring up the story, posted recently, on the first page of results. In fact, it's not even on the first FIVE pages of results. I have no idea where it is on that list, because I stopped looking at it after five pages. Many people will do the same.

So, yeah, Fox News definitely mentioned it...sorta...somewhere...can anybody show me an editorial on Foxnews.com about China that doesn't say good things about it?

In other words, it's not a liberal conspiracy. News Corporation is doing very bad things.

So if you like Bill O'Reilly, I think you can live without him for the sake of not having information dictated by China. First News Corp, next someone else.

But this isn't just about Bill O'Reilly. News Corporation needs to stop getting our money in regards to all their products. Want to see a movie? Find out if it's a Fox release, and pirate it if it is. Don't buy or use anything owned by News Corporation companies.

This. Includes. Myspace.

Stop using Myspace.

When I see an anti-China article printed prominently in any News Corp publication, and they prove that they're serious, we can continue giving them money. Until then, make it clear to News Corporation that we are not going to tolerate this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE UNICORN
MEETS
THE DRAGON
(dragon wins round one)

For those who wanted to see my latest video regarding my problems with MySpace it appears you cannnot view it on YouTube (a NEWSCORP company) as it was pulled after only 23 viewings.

I am very upset by this decision to censor something designed to alert people about..of all things.. censorship.

Let's examine something here for the record: go to Youtube and do a search of videos by entering MYSPACE SUCKS and see how many people have been allowed to freely express their views.

Emo kids and housewives and everything in between can ramble on.. one guy even has a music video that is actually quite funny and goes further to say that MySpace "F"ing Sucks.

My video at press time is still available on my other blog at Blogspot since I followed my instincts and loaded it seperately.. so you can still attempt to view it for now at the following Link (until Rupie's crew makes a call I suppose so when it's gone at least my words perhaps might remain here as witness.

http://wwjbwhatwouldjesusblog.blogspot.com/

I suggest you download a copy into your system and realize that whatever i shared must have scared them enough to pull it and I am sure somebody is likely reading these words even now from the rupiesquad.

I invoke my first amendment rights since i believe rupert Murdock is the False Prophet and is also a public figure .. Likewise I hold fast to my right under the law of "Fair Use" (accessable on my Home Page by link) because I do not profit from this site... nor does my ministry (I accept donations but never request them) ... I am signed up for Google Ads on my other blog ...yes.. but unless 30 cents is profiting then I make nothing from doing any of this.

So why would RM be upset about me?.. What did I say or print that was not the truth?.. I apologise if any information I ever present is in error and will gladly pull myself or rewrite ANYTHING found to be untrue. I have strong opinions about this and my theory seems to be only proving itself more valid when my materials are censored.

For the record... here is the working Script for the Video:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome My Dear Friends

My Name is Jesus of Zion and today I am going to share with you something very important regarding MySpace that you should be aware of.

Perhaps you have noticed some of your friends disappearing

Perhaps you have had links to other cool sites disabled so they don’t work anywhere.

Perhaps you have had your own profile deleted without warning or notice and wondered why.. Yet if you ask they only tell you broke one of their rules .. Yet never are they specific no matter how much you beg.

Have you noticed any of the new and inhibitive changes or did you just assume your friends with unique ideas simply deleted their own accounts.

I began on MySpace in 2006 when Tom actually still owned the site and it had less than 6 Million Profiles and NEVER did I see as much censorship, deletions and unexplainable harassment as I have witnessed since MySpace became part of Rupert Murdoch’s quest to take over and become “King of all Media”.

I had well over a thousand friends .. Over 800 Blog entries and my site was often said to be beautiful , inspiring and worth exploring by those who commented… Yet, in late April of this year (only a week before my Birthday) Myspace deleted me with no warning or advance notice.

I questioned this and got back only vague replies offering me NO specifics and as I kept asking the responses just kept repeating the same message in shorter and more curt responses eventually just telling me to review the entire Agreement and figure it out myself.

I asked for a phone number and here is what the response actually stated “Myspace does not have any phone number to access their main offices”… HUH?..What?.. Who does not have a Phone number.. Is MySpace run by monkeys????

Apparently , since after two years of effort I was VERY upset and according to MySpace there was “no way to recover my Profile once it has been deleted” ….(this is all BS by the way since I know of one friend who actually because of her celeb status did what Myspace told me was IMPOSSIBLE)

Anyway, being angry at this injustice and without any other way to protest I began a New Myspace and my blogs became openly critical of how I had been treated. I reposted every E-mail and every fact and guess what?

Within two-weeks THAT NEW PROFILE was deleted.

Again I wrote to get help and the same dry responses eventually led me to just basically give up trying.. Begin a new Nicey Nice profile and be really careful in actually having any opinion… I felt like MySpace had simply said SIT DOWN and shut up.

OK, I still have a myspace but I hardly feel comfortable saying anything except “hows the weather” or “ Whats up”.. I suppose I could repost Questionnaires and fake Virus scare letters like the rest of the 14 year olds But I was there to share something meaningful.. To change the world by being different and sharing my ideas openly and freely.

Don’t get me wrong.. I want to LIKE MYSPACE.. My ministry began there and I am loyal to those who provide opportunity in a Fair and Balanced environment.

Fair and Balanced?.. Him? Where have I heard that before..

Oh YES.. FOX NEWS? Owned by News Corporation.. THE SAME COMPANY THAT OWNS MYSPACE and is run by a very dangerous man named RUPERT MURDOCH.

Here is a list of some of the companies held by Rupees NEWS CORPORATION and realize it’s growing every single day both in power and social influence having just acquired ASIANET as well.

(LIST)

It’s been said that HE WHO CONTROLS THE MEDIA CONTROLS THE WORLD and I agree (in fact I recommend seeing my last video called the FALSE PROPHET REVEALED which presents just a minimum of the evidence and support I am amassing… even today I found even more in support of my theory and I will be presenting all of this at MURDOCKWATCH.. My New Blog.

I also have links to the video OUTFOXED and even a Link to the new NAS (NAWZ) video “Sly Fox” with the words included.

So WHY DOES MYSPACE SUCK

Because now it’s owned by Rupert Murdoch in his quest to control each of us into HIS RIGHT-WING ULTRA-CONSERVATIVE WAY OF VIEWING.

IF YOU VALUE JUSTICE

IF YOU VALUE FREEDOM

IF YOU VALUE TRUTH

Please visit, subscribe and recommend both my Blog and this video.

Thank You and BE LOVE & BE LOVED!
-------------------end--------------------------------------

I am available to any non-NewsCorp media for interviews regarding this situation and I advise any and all freedom advocates to join me in my battle against the FALSE PROPHET and his attempt to censor opinion and truth.

Realize HE WHO OWNS THE MEDIA OWNS THE WORLD" and RM appears to carry a massive stick.. I am but a poor lad with a sling and a rock but NO GIANT SHALL I FEAR.. For I have the power of truth, justice and LOVE.

HERES ANOTHER ODD ONE: Anyone familiar with King Arthur Legends.. basically it's true story blown up into a myth about two warring clan families that has gone on and on throughout history.. Murdock is actually of the House of ULSTER whose clan usurped the kingship from it's rightful heir and helped place a false house into power of Europe (who still hold the power.. yet are not the true royal line)

Look at the "MURDOCK" CREST which at the top shows the "RED DRAGON" (please also recall that the Bible says something about a Dragon too..)

Anyway, I will not for now reveal my given last name here for now BUT lets just say my Family Crest shows a "Goat with a broken horn (hidden Unicorn) and there is also a knight which has almost an optcal illusion to it in which there is a HIDDEN KING and I will say My Name does include the word KING in it.

This would mean that at one time in Gaelic history his family and my family were at enmity and so one might say this has an odd twist I did not know about fully until this morning.

I oft am amazed at the things that confirm my calling and now it seems to make perfect sense on a level even I did not clearly see coming... whatta wied life and I may be upset but THIS TOO HAS GOOD PURPOSE.. The fact it was pulled should show I must be some sort of concern.

This ride called life truly is very interesting and filled with odd adventure Huh?

BE LOVE & BE LOVED
and Rupie I am starting to see EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE.. This is some odd destiny!

(P.S. If I appear crazy.. good... It keeps me safe by working in my favor for now... only later will most realize I'M NOT THE CRAZY ONE.. just takin' care of family business for My Father YHWH!)

MR. MURDOCK NOTE:

Let me make it clear that I realize your power and might and I respect your right to do as you must for who can war with the Beast.. I therefore wish to state for the record that I shall not advocate violence and give my oath that I shall not myself nor shall I entice or compel any violent or radical action against you. This is a spiritual and political battle and my only "sword" shall be "words" given me by YHWH.

I am a man of peace and honor and I would hope you are as well... But I must come against you for what you represent for as Moshe' before me I shall not let God's people be led to slaughter if I can help it and you condone beliefs I cannot comply with no matter the cost... Rightiousness shall always ultimately prevail. JBK (aka JoZ).

News Corp. earnings jump 27 percent
Posted by Holly Jackson Post a commentNews Corp., the parent company of MySpace, announced its fourth quarter earnings Tuesday, beating Wall Street expectations on the strength of its television and film businesses.

News Corp. reported a net income of $1.1 billion, or 43 cents a share for the quarter ended June 30, a 27 percent increase over last year. Excluding one-time items, earnings rose to 35 cents per share, a cent higher than analysts had been expecting.

CEO Rupert Murdoch noted in a statement that the company was pleased with its growth, but noted challenges ahead.

"Although we clearly face more challenging macro-economic conditions in fiscal '09, we're well positioned to deliver continued, if somewhat less robust growth," Murdoch said.

MySpace and other Fox Interactive Web properties reported a 57 percent increase in revenue. The company noted that while operating profits increased five-fold on strength of advertising and search revenue growth at MySpace, operating income from Fox Interactive properties was down due to increased technical costs related to new Web site features and ventures.

Rupert Murdoch set to acquire majority stake in Asianet
5 Aug, 2008, 0140 hrs IST,Sonali Krishna & Boby Kurien, ET Bureau

MUMBAI/BANGALORE: Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch’s visit to India may soon lead to a slew of changes within STAR India. Mr Murdoch is believed to have cleared the decks for an alliance with the Rajeev Chandrasekhar-led Asianet Entertainment.

Sources said that STAR is expected to acquire a majority stake in Asianet’s general entertainment channels across three southern languages, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. The move is in tandem with STAR’s plans in the regional space, and the deal is expected to be sealed in the coming weeks.

The deal with Asianet will only fructify after STAR exits Balaji Telefilms. STAR currently holds over 25% stake in Balaji. Last year, STAR entered into a JV with Balaji Telefilms to come up with general entertainment channels in southern languages. However, STAR’s relationship seems to have gone sour and Balaji Telefilms is in talks with several PE players.

STAR India officials were unavailable for comment. Asianet spokesperson told ET: “Asianet has been talking to several potential partners and STAR is one of them. However, we would not like to comment on market speculation at this point in time.”

Insiders said Asianet Entertainment was being valued at about Rs 300-350 crore, but this could not be confirmed independently. The company has two general entertainment channels in Malayalam, one in Kannada (Suvarna) and one proposed in Telugu (Sitara). Asianet is the clear leader in the Malayalam satellite broadcast business, with a substantial lead over Kalanidhi Maran’s Surya TV.

On Monday, addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Mr Murdoch said that STAR will invest $100 million over the next 12 months to launch six regional television channels in India where the media is expanding at a frenetic pace. STAR currently operates 14 TV channels in India offering entertainment, sports and news programming. However, the leading broadcaster has been unable to crack the regional markets. STAR’s Tamil channel Vijay has not been able to take on Sun TV or Raj TV. In fact, it is learnt that Asianet is looking at dropping its original plan of entering the Tamil market in the event of formalising a JV with STAR.

Two months ago, as a prelude to the impending deal, Asianet restructured itself into four separate companies focusing on general entertainment, news, radio and media infrastructure. ET had earlier reported on STAR’s discussions with Asianet. In 2006, Mr Chandrasekhar acquired a controlling interest in Asianet for about Rs 130-150 crore. Mr Chandrasekhar acquired Asianet through his PE firm Jupiter Capital. Asianet currently has a sizeable position in the Malayalam and Kannada satellite markets, pegged at over Rs 500 crore.

Is Rupert Murdoch "Lovin' It?" McDonald's Corp. Responds to Rumors of a Corporate Policy to Exclusively Air FOX News
By meg
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Meg White

Update 5:00 p.m. CDT: McDonald's Corp. got back to us two hours after our stated deadline. Danya Proud, spokesperson for McDonald's USA, said that while there is no corporate policy that she knows of regarding in-restaurant television programming, the company does "require all of its restaurants to show appropriate content," which she defined as news and/or McDonald's-generated programming such as advertising.

Proud also said that there could be a regional or franchisee-specific policy regarding programming, which she would look into for me, so stay tuned for updates!

Rumors began circulating around several news Web sites and blogs yesterday that McDonald's has a policy to exclusively play FOX News on its in-restaurant televisions. Apparently, someone who called in to a program on C-SPAN said he had gone to a McDonald's in Missouri and asked them to change the channel from FOX to something else. Workers there refused, saying they weren't allowed to change the channel due to corporate policy. The caller said he then spoke with a regional director. An e-mail [1] written by a C-SPAN watcher who goes by "Libby" said that the caller said that the regional director told him the policy was due to "bad things on other channels."

A post [2] on Daily Kos said this about the encounter:

"McDonald's was in the process of installing wide screen TVs in all of their restaurants over the entire five-state region, and that the 'FOX News only policy' was corporate policy for all McDonald's restaurants in the region. The director also stated that the reason for this policy was that McDonald's had determined that there is less violence on FOX News than any other channel."

After hearing about the rumor, attorney William Betz of New York wrote an e-mail to the restaurant's corporate offices. Here is an excerpt of his e-mail:

"For your information, it is no secret that FOX is a right-wing political propaganda machine that is now and has been for years actively campaigning for the Republican Party and against the Democratic Party. It is the 'baddest' of the 'bad things.' This political activity on the part of McDonald's is entirely unacceptable -- although it would certainly be normal in the former USSR and present-day China and other totalitarian countries. As a lawyer and citizen who is very concerned about political propaganda being used directly and subliminally by a political party or its outlets, including, apparently, McDonald's, I am outraged at this report. Please either confirm or deny that it is true. If it is, it's certainly a firm basis for a nationwide, indeed worldwide, consumer boycott of your company. I await your reply."

He said he received a "form letter" e-mail in response from McDonald's customer service department saying that the issue will be "investigated" and that appropriate actions will be taken to ameliorate the situation.

"It's like I'm complaining about a worm in a hamburger," Betz said of the McDonald's response in a phone interview with BuzzFlash today.

BuzzFlash attempted to get an answer from the communications office at McDonald's. After repeated telephone conversations and e-mails, McDonald's Corp. did not provide an answer to our questions about in-restaurant television policy or about the veracity of the story being circulated online.

As we've reported before [2], McDonald's seemingly has few qualms about cozying up to news organizations. Recently, they've begun placing their products on the desks of local anchors during newscasts in Las Vegas, and plan to do so elsewhere around the country.

McDonald's is certainly less partisan than FOX News. In fact, just a couple of weeks ago, McDonald's was hit with a boycott [2] from a prominent organization in the religious right. But by following the money, one can see where the true sympathies of McDonald's Corp. lie.

According to the FEC, McDonald's PAC [3] has donated at least $191,000 to the House and Senate Republican re-election committees in the past 10 years. In 1998, the PAC donated $2,500 [4] directly to Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain's senatorial campaign. No contributions were found from the McDonald's PAC to Sen. Barack Obama or to Democratic Congressional re-election committees for the same period.

As for employees of McDonald's, both major party candidates for president got attention. McCain has received $15,250 and Obama $12,540 from McDonald's employees since the beginning of 2007. Of the 19 different donations to Obama from McDonald's employees, the average amount was $660. McCain got a smaller amount of heftier donations, with the average amount given to McCain by McDonald's employees at well over $2,000.

That may not seem like a lot for the world's largest fast food company, which annually spends more than $1 billion on advertising alone. However, if these contributions are combined with a promise to air only what the non-partisan group Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting calls [5] "the most biased name in news" with an "extraordinary right-wing tilt" in a swing state in an election year, well, that sounds to us like an "in kind" contribution worth more than any amount they've contributed to specific candidates so far.

It seems that every week or so there’s a new online gaming location, opening up for business here

It seems that every week or so there’s a new online gaming location, opening up for business here in the capital city of Bangkok.

There was an article just today in the Bangkok Post about True Internet talking about the dial-up internet market. Dial-up customers are expected to reach 750 thousand by the end of the year. Internet interest is growing and not everyone can afford DSL.

The reason I mentioned that is so that you can understand the increase in the online gaming establishments. It’s difficult to play an online game on a dial-up internet connection. You probably take your broadband service for granted, we can’t here.

Online gaming is addictive and it seems that males have a thing for anything with a rating system involving numbers. Everybody wants to be king of the game domain.

People used to the metro lifestyle would definitely recognise this phenomenon, where you know a stranger quite well and yet he remains a stranger nonetheless. As in, let's say some guy you have never spoken to, who happens to take the same train or bus every morning for work. There is a similar phenomenon for readers who read about books and reading almost as much as they read the books themselves - an author sounds so familiar as if you have been reading him/her for ages. Whereas, in fact, you may not have read a single word penned by him. At least, this happens to me a lot. To remedy that situation, I have been picking up certain authors at random just because they have been floating in my head for quite sometime. Iris Murdoch happened to be one of them.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="116" caption="null"][/caption]

Under the Net impressed me from the beginnig, however, if I said I was dazzled by the book and it turned out to be one of the best I have ever read, that would be lying trough my teeth. The first reaction at finishing the book was "What was the point?". However, if you let it sink in, Under the Net does cast a spell, though not as 'magnificient' as you may have expected from Murdoch's only title in the 100 Best English Language Novels of the 20th Century List by the Board of the Modern Library (a division of Random House).

There is nothing 'fantastic' about the plot or the characters. On the contrary, all is quite normal. However, probably to add that magical hmour, there definitely are events that you may not expect to experience every day. Having said that, let me add that the element of humour hangs at some little corner throughout the story, even at times when you are made to wonder at some profound implications of certain conversations.

Iris Murdoch's existential inclinations are well-known. It is my belief that the novel is a marvellous achievement in that respect. It is in the character of youth to be dazzled by the ever prominent struggle between action and ideas in life. Whereas all within feels profound, everything tangible is uninspiring. This gap that has prevented so many potentiatialities from being realized is so vague that to be able to describe it in a story as simlple as this one speaks volumes about not only the literary skills of the author but her clarity of thought.

"The trouble with you is that you are always expecting something". This simple sentence is the essence of all that Murdoch has woven the novel around. Throughout the book, there is a mention of 'extraordinary, profound, and interesting' conversations between the protagonist and his best friend which just eludes us till the end. This best friend happens to be one of the most interesting characters of the book, and in a frustatingly teasing manner, Murdoch keeps him silent most of the times.

A failure to find inspiration to act has been the nemesis of many great artists and thinkers and many others who never shall reach that stage of recognition so as to be categorised even as a 'failure'. The life of the 'ordinary' in the wake of great potential is probably one of the most difficult. Somewhere on these lines, Murdoch kepps you under her net throughout the journey of this book and when you least expect it, lets you go. Disappointed we sulk and ask - What was the point. Murdoch answers, "The trouble with you is that you are always expecting something".

Howdy Folks!

Howdy Folks!

So I suppose you've heard the news... I am in the process of fulfilling a nearly-abandoned dream of studying abroad. I've accepted a PhD position at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia (although I should say, they've accepted me). I'm very excited, totally overwhelmed and... a little freaked out. OK, a lot freaked out.

Over the next few posts, I'll catch you up on what's been going on, what the move entails, etc. I imagine once in-country I'll have heaps more interesting things to say; this is just the prologue. So, let's get into it, shall we?

Perth is known for its urban chic, mediterranean weather, uranium mining and the nearby Margaret River wine region, one of the best in Australia. Apparently it is a lovely, if somewhat isolated, city: the nearest metropolis is Adelaide, over 1300mi away on the central-southern coast of Australia. Imagine if the entire western US was like Nevada, and Seattle and San Diego the only cities west of the Mississippi. Come to think of it, this is a very appropriate analogy - Perth and San Diego are similarly situated relative to the equator; the state of Western Australia is mostly desert, akin to the American West's Great Basin, with most people residing along the coastlines. North of Perth is a large valley where much of the region's crops are grown, like California's Central Valley. WA is also nicknamed 'the Golden State' (or the "wildflower state'). Huh, right?

The great thing about working in Academia is that your social and professional networks are constantly moving around; eventually you know somebody with a sofabed in every country. This position came to me via my former colleague/buddy Daniel, a Perth native and long-time denizen of Murdoch U. His graduate advisor will be my graduate advisor, and Dan will surely be mentoring me as he works on similar projects. I'll be leaving in early September, it seems. The program is fully-funded until Dec 2011, sponsored by the Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity (CRCNPB), a commercial-applications-based federal funding program (which makes me kind of nervous... we've been here before). My PhD will be in "Sustainability and Technology Policy". The project deals with preventing the importation of plant pathogens such as phytophthoras, examines means by which new or 'emerging' phytophthora species can be detected at the nursery, and aims to establish federal policy to regulate and oversee international trade. That's pretty daunting. It's very similar to some of the work put out by my former lab, so while I have a good foundation in this kind of research, I also know what's ahead of me. I'll have to be very delicate to encourage nursery folks' participation, and will have to put in long hours teasing needles from haystacks. I also have to be right - this work could have some serious economic impacts on an entire nation's nursery trade and their global partners, so no mistakes! Nevertheless, this project gives me the opportunity to contribute to conservation research, and the fields of molecular and invasive ecology. I'm pretty psyched. If I can just figure out how to work evolutionary modeling into it, I should come out employable, desirable and a little bit smarter.

This program is a great opportunity - my tuition is waived and I'm given an annual salary that is pretty good by student standards. Because it is a national program, I will probably be required to attend workshops in other major cities, so there should be plenty of opportunity for travel. The budget for the project is also good, I think, although if I want to get into some really sexy molecular assays I might have to apply for additional funding. Apparently I'm one of the first international participants in the program, so that should add another dimension of bureaucratic surreality to the whole experience. The Australian system for post-graduate study is very different from the U.S. - I am not required to take classes for grades, but I am allowed to audit courses if I choose (which I probably will do, at least for something like 'flora and fauna/natural history of Australia'). There are no oral exams, and the thesis requirement is to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Suckers! I do have to provide my own health insurance (which is pretty cheap at 28$US/month), and pay for my visa. The student visa also allows for 20hrs/week paid work, so if anything happens and I need extra cash, I can T.A. or wait tables, etc.

I have never been to Australia, and decided to not visit to 'check it out' - it's too good a deal to worry about fitting in nationally, and other than the usual paperwork glitch I've seen no red flags. I have already met several of my future colleagues, and they were nothing but cool, cool, cool. I'm looking forward to getting to know them better. Another Garbelotto survivor is joining the same lab group this fall, also as a graduate student (although she may be sponsored by an entirely different entity). We'll have great fun getting to know the city, state, and university together. I have heard good things about my future professor, and i can tell from his sense of humor that we're going to get along great - except that he writes me emails in the middle of the night which tells me the man never sleeps. I like to sleep. I hope he doesn't mind that.

That's plenty for now. Stay tuned!

I’ve just been reading about how Max Mosley will now sue everyone in sight for deciding to pub

I've just been reading about how Max Mosley will now sue everyone in sight for deciding to publish his private life. Good. In turn, Lord Carey, the former Archbish of Canterbury has waded in to the row, saying that it is a harmful ruling (against the News of the World) that will harm free speech and morality.

Lord Carey writes for the News of the World.

So basically, a former leader of the Anglican church has decided to take the shilling of Murdoch and launch into an attack on the courts of this land.

Surely using his position in the Lord's would be better for all involved?

He is entitled to his views of course, but by announcing them in the rag in question he has utterly undermined his argument. You have to ask yourself: has he taken the bag of money from the NOTW to fight their corner and abuse his position, or is he so naive as to think that writing this article in this paper has no impact or consequence?

Either way, to my mind, he has reveled himself as having poor judgement.

One of his main points is that if a man cannot stay faithful to his wife and the vows he made, how can he stay faithful to his duty of office. What complete rubbish. Every monarch for centuries has had strings of lovers, countless MP's have had affairs and been pefectly able to do their jobs.

And Max Mosley is the head of the FIA, not exactly leader of the free world is it?

What the man did was not illegal, it is a matter purely for his conscience and it is for him to answer the judgement his wife, children, family and friends will lay at his door. It is not up to the tabloids to do it for him.

And it is certainly not the job of an old bastard like Carey, useless at Canterbury, has now apparently sold his soul to the media and is a puppet for their vested interests.

You can turn on the FOX Network at any hour during the day and assuredly you'll find them yapping about terrorist plotting to disrupt hootin' nannies all across fly over America. After the commercial break, you'll get a heavy dose of child predators and how there is one around every corner. With little to segue or space to take a breath, they'll bring on some guy who swears that gays will being suing your church for the right to walk down those most hallowed of aisles. Fear, fear and oh look just a little more fear.

You'd think that FOX might change their motto from "We report, you decide" to something like "We'll scare you, you freak out!" FEAR is the hallmark of the Murdoch/Ailes operation and now they've decided "what the Hell, let's trademark it!"

Yep, FOX News submitted a trademark application for FACT VS FEAR supposedly for an ongoing news segment. Somehow on the FOX Network when it's a competition of FACT versus FEAR, fear seems to win every time.

It's really not a bad strategy when you think about. People want to entertained when watching TV. AD folks will tell you that "sex" sells. Sex doesn't do so bad at the movies either. Likewise, scaring folks works as entertainment too. What sequel are we at on the Halloween Movies now?

To entertain, you've either got to Scare, Humor, Titillate or Shock. An easy way to remember it is with the acronym SHITS. If you can simultaneously do all four, you'd be giving people the SHITS.

With the likes of Hannity & Colmes, the morose Brit Hume, that Oompah Loompah Shepard Smith and Bill O the Clown, it is no wonder that the FOX News Netwwork gives me the SHITS.

So far they have not submitted a trademark application for "TERRORIST FIST JAB" but I'm sure it's in the works!

I used to think The A-Team was great when I was a kid – really, really great. Sadly, twenty years

I used to think The A-Team was great when I was a kid – really, really great. Sadly, twenty years down the line, it turns out the show’s a big pile of shit. I know this now because I watched five episodes back-to-back on Sunday and they were all awful. I was dismayed to discover that my childhood heroes were twits. That’s right, TWITS.

BA is a whining bully covered in a heap of stupid gold jewellery, Hannibal is a smug twat, Murdoch’s loony ways are annoying instead of amusing and Face is a greasy arsehole. All four together piss you off. They should be called ‘The Shitty Team’, or ‘The Twats Team’ … or something much more amusing than those last two suggestions.

The opening narration goes like this:

“In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. They promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no-one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.”

However, the opening monologue should really go like this:

“In 1972, four twats ran away from the Vietnam War and hid in a van in Los Angeles in the 80s. There, still wanted by the government, they survived in plain sight by starring in movies, being committed to state insane asylums, running a string of businesses, and being a car mechanic with the most recognizable look of anyone in the entire Los Angeles area – so, out of sight, out of mind, then. If you’ve borrowed money off a loan shark and now don’t want to pay the money back, and if you can find them (which doesn’t seem all that hard, as it ‘appens), then maybe you can hire that shower of wazzocks – The A-Team.”

That’s what happened in one show. An Italian bloke borrowed money off this loan shark chap, and then went running to the fucking A-Team when he couldn’t meet the (admittedly outrageous) repayments. And what did that old twat Hannibal do?

Well, he didn’t tell the old Italian fella to go fuck himself. No. He put on a bloody awful Oirish accent, borrowed money off the shark, opened an Oirish pub, then bust the shark’s ass with the aid of his team. At no stage did anyone say to the Italian bloke that borrowing $10,000 off a man who tells you he’ll ‘break yer head’ if you don’t repay triple the amount back was a stupid idea. No, they just meted out the justice – A-Team style – on the loan shark. Alright, so the shark deserved it, but surely the Italian guy deserved a smack on the kisser from BA’s big fat fists for being so stupid? Apparently not.

In another episode, an old bastard was in danger of losing the foster home he ran because he’d run up massive gambling debts. The heavies moved in, punched the old guy in the guts, and he signed over his house in lieu of payment. Fair enough, you might think … but no! Off his daughter runs to Hannibal! And what does he do? Does he tell her her dad can go whistle if he thinks his team of 1972 crack commandos is bailing the old bastard out of his self-inflicted gambling debts? Does he arse! He fires up the team and busts the ass of the man who’s owed money! Problem solved! Huzzah! Huzzah for the fucking A-Team!

None of this bothered me when I was ten. I was in it for the guns and the car chases and BA refusing to get on planes ‘n’ shit. I enjoyed the way the team could make an Apache attack helicopter out of three slices of cake and a fish finger. I loved it when Face got the poodle-haired ladies, when BA cracked some heads, when Hannibal dressed up in a stupid wig to deceive the bad guy, and I loved it when Murdoch went bonkers in a wedding dress. Most of all, I loved it when a plan came together.

Well not anymore. The A-Team are dead to me now, DEAD. Now I know they’re a bunch of bastards who’ll help out any old cunt with a sob-story, regardless of whether that cunt’s the author of his own misfortune or not.

“In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit.”

They should have been put in front of a firing squad.

Crowd of people in uncomfortable chairs drinking shitty coffee from styrofoam cups-Hi John

Seemingly jolly man with buttoned long sleeve shirt and tie with a creepy smile-Tell us about your experience

Me-Well, okay then...

Today i wrote a bulletin on Myspaces bulletin system about the way privacy is handled online these days. It was long and elaborate, and within it contained the makings of a borderline conspiracy theory worthy of a tin foil hat.

At this moment, I still haven't seen it posted.

I want to write it again, but I, in all my years of working with computers, didn't take 12 seconds to save the damn thing. Well, I didn't think it would get on anyways, seeing that its a News Corp owned subsidiary, Rupert wouldn't want such things said to the fine sheep who mingle away on Myspace. The essay did have some points though that I want to iterate here, and seeing that it is an open forum, I will go along and do so.

Privacy is no longer a prized possesion, but a commodity that is bought and sold. Privacy is just a policy now, something that we forget about as we click quickly on the "I agree" box and scamper away, unknowingly hacking our personal freedoms away. We wonder where all this spam comes from, and we get filters to take our minds off the problem, but when the majority of our emails sent are unwarrented, and they somehow know how to get your email, I worry a bit.

The Patriot Act gives way too many freedoms to our government. I read the Patriot Act awhile back ago and nearly vomited. The amount of freedom this single law gives to those in power is absolutely, knee shaking scary. It's the makings of thousands of paranoid schizophrenics the world wide, and for good reason. This law can give investigative agencies free reign to wiretap any, and all phones without legislative oversight as to who and why. It gives amazing freedom in its vagueness, and it includes passages that read like "books, records, papers, documents, and other items" where "other items" isn't necessarily implied.

There have been reports though, not from the media but from individual sources on blogs, where Myspace and Facebook profiles were accessed, while also being set to private, to aid in investigating crimes, such as people taking pictures of themselves smoking pot, and other uses of our tax dollars. I just can't get over how scary this law is, and how important this next presidency will be in supporting our freedoms.

What's especially interesting about Myspace, is who owns it. News Corp (Fair, Balanced, Fox News... and now the O'Reilly Factor) owned by the most self proclaimed propagandist since William Randolph Hearst, Rupert Murdoch. Now, why would they want Myspace? When they bought it, it was actually losing a fair amount of money, gaining in popularity, yes, but buggy and nearly unusable. 580 Million dollars later, Mr. Murdoch owned the lives of millions of teenagers, and with it, access to their email addresses, IP addresses, bulletins (which often includes survey information), web searches, friend lists, job information, messages between friends... basically, every nook and cranny of the lives of these people. Sure, it's good for advertising, but we're talking about Rupert Murdoch here, king of swing, Manda of Propaganda, crier for fire. This was the guy who said the greatest thing to come from a war in Iraq would be 20 dollar a gallon gas. I am appalled that in this "non-monopolistic" capitalist country, we have men like this who can control what we see, hear, and say, and now we blindly hand over every piece of ourselves to an organization of fear.

The thing I am most afraid of though is, we are going about our days like this isn't happening. Maybe it's the media, suppressing the message of the activist and calling them childish names so that all the viewers root on big brother like cows mooing right before their heads are chopped off. We have become a society that looks down upon free thought, and conformity is no longer an option, but a necessity. Our police are not protectors of justice any longer, unless justice is now the blind lady who shackles you into namelessness and oblivion. Our school systems grade on how well we stand in line, rather than how well we question its existence. It's scary the direction we are going, and it has to end soon before Orwell has his way.

What we need to do is find ways around these media markets, and its creations like blogging and the Internet that can drive these things. When 5 major companies control our news, our news is no longer news. What we need is teams of journalists made from the black and white keys of the Internet revolution. Web 2.0 will give us, the people, a voice. One that can be heard from every steeple and every valley but as close as the swing of a mouse. We need to free up the Internet, giving access to all, not just the subscribed few. We need to be constantly watchful, and at the same time we need to constantly write our experiences down, and write them well. We need to live outside the box. In a way, we all need to be cynics, and we need to be proud of that, because at least cynics are looking rather than waiting.

Now aghast seemingly jolly man with buttoned long sleeve shirt and tie with a creepy smile-Now how does that make you feel?

Iris Murdoch was a Dublin-born writer and philosopher. Iris's first published novel, Under the Net, was selected in 2001 by the editorial board of the American Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 1987, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Iris's novels are by turns intense and bizarre, filled with dark humor and unpredictable plot twists, undercutting the civilized surface of the usually intellectual upper middle-class milieu in which her characters are observed.
