Philip Gardiner's Diary of a Vampire provides an intriguing glimpse into the world of Bram Stoker, the Irish author of Dracula (1897).

As possible influences on Stoker's work the film looks at European history, Freemasonry, Asian mysticism, mythology, the esoterica of Madame Blavatsky and her disagreement with the German religion scholar, Max Müller.

Much visual and narrative emphasis is given to the idea that, in contrast to the scathing account given in the biblical Book of Genesis, the serpent represents sexual energy that may be transformed into spiritual power--i.e. the kundalini and the seven chakras.

Whether or not this kind of subtle power is healthy, hypnotic or perhaps even manipulative is left to open debate.

The film's treatment of the serpent is further developed by mention of the Christian belief that, as a symbol of evil, the snake is something to be overcome through intercessory prayer and, in the past, abject violence.

Dracula, then, is taken as a symbol for the English fear of esoteric cults during a time that saw a subtle resurgence of the ongoing conflict between the 'Christian West' and 'Pagan East.'

To its credit, this thoughtful and well-researched film asks which side Stoker is on, or whether he is merely observing and inadvertently encouraging a nascent consciousness shift that culminates in a full-fledged Gothic revival during the Victorian age.

Diary of a Vampire is highly recommended for those interested in the ongoing tensions and ambiguities found among Christian and non-Christian beliefs, especially with regard to the Victorian era and the esoteric, occult and underground influences of that period.

House Müller Gritsch in Lenzburg. The artist couple Barbara Müller and Stefan Gritsch lived for 25 years in the former carpenter’s workshop shed of Barbara Müller’s father. The sale of the building offered the couple the possibility to construct a new house in the yard of the building complex, on condition that the building costs did not exceed the funds raised from the sale.

The only feasible way to realise the substantial spatial program involved at the set price of CHF. 580,000 was to design the house in prefabricated wooden elements. The existence of a previous basement made excavation works superfluous and, after prefabrication, allowed the erection of building to be undertaken in record time. The end result was a cubic price of CHF. 480.

However, it should be emphasised that the search for innovative solutions was not merely motivated by the cost constraints. The resulting architecture deliberately mirrors a conscious attitude that defies the polished superfluity so deeply ingrained in contemporary lifestyles and attempts instead to address more substantial issues. The finished project affords the artists, who spend much of their time at home, spatial variety and complexity, and encourages both users and visitors to explore and rediscover the house anew. In this sense the house constitutes an introverted vessel, complementing the nature of artistic work whilst simultaneously creating deliberate links with the outside world. Considerable emphasis was placed on the relation towards the surroundings. The windows are placed in such a manner to frame Lenzburg castle, the Staufberg or the Goffersberg as if they were pictures. In terms of urban planning, the polygonal volume and the neighboring carpenter’s workshop form a courtyard around which the studios and the kitchen are orientated. The 1 1/2-storey living room constitutes the spatial focus of the house out of which all of the rooms are elaborated around the central nucleus, containing the chimney and the staircase.

The house is conceived as a spatial continuum, enabling a wide variety of spatial relations. Both of the two studios can be partitioned from each other, but simultaneously can be read as an extended living room.

La Repubblica Ceca fa il colpaccio e punisce la Svizzera con il primo tiro in porta. Primo tempo noioso e statico, secondo tempo vivace e più aperto. Sfortunati gli svizzeri, Repubblica Ceca compatta e "più squadra".

La Svizzera meritava molto, ma molto di più, ed è stata anche sfortunata con quella traversa presa da Volanthen, e con l'infortunio di Frei, fin a quel momento unico che era riuscito a tirare in porta di entrambe le squadre. Primo tempo noioso, bloccato, le due squadre non sono proprio votate all'attacco e si temono, la Svizzera però ha il pubblico dalla sua parte ed attacca benissimo sulla destra con l'ottimo Behrami, giostrato da un centrocampo di grande qualità con l'udinese Inler e il bravissimo Barnetta (si dice nel mirino della Roma, sarebbe un buon acquisto). La Repubblica Ceca invece con tranquillità si difende, anche grazie alla grande esperienza dei 4 "italiani" schierati in campo, su tutti sicuramente Ujfalusi, maestoso, e migliore in campo.

Secondo tempo più vivace, la Svizzera capisce di potercela fare ma l'infortunio di Frei è un brutto colpo. Entra Yakin che si rivela un buon ricambio, da mobilità all'attacco, ma Streller è veramente inguardabile e non ne azzecca una. Così nel momento migliore della Svizzera segna la Repubblica Ceca con un bel gol di Sverkos, subentrato allo statico Koller. Così la Repubblica Ceca cambia completamente faccia, anche perchè sembrava troppo Koller-dipendente nel primo tempo. La Svizzera comunque attacca ma non c'è niente da fare. Serata storta per i padroni di casa, che si non si possono neanche consolare, visto che anche il miglior uomo si è infortunato.

Ottimi gli "italiani" in campo, forse solo Rozenhal un pò intimidito, pericoloso Behrami, regista Inler, mi è piaciuto moltissimo Barnetta, ripeto, ma anche buoni gli esterni Plasil e Jarolim. Parte bene la Repubblica Ceca, che però dovrà vedersela con il Portogallo di Ronaldo mercoledì.

Que jogo medíocre! O CAP só defendeu o jogo inteiro e quando fez uma boa jogada que culminou num gol, este é rapida e erroneamente anulado.

O CAP não mereceu a vitória, o Verdão jogou muito melhor.

O que me deixou muito irritado foi a transmissão da SporTV. Nunca vi alguém puxar tanto o saco do Palmeiras quanto o Muller (ou Miller, sei lá, ele é um merda). O cara é um palhaço, deveria narrar só o Paulistão pois desconhece qualquer outro time fora do eixo SP-SP. Até por isso eu não assino o PFC (o Brasileirão em pay-per-view) pois com certeza o Muller é só um dos centenas de incompetentes que trabalham lá na Globosat narrando os jogos. O outro motivo de eu não assinar o PFC é a mediocridade dos jogos. Honestamente, quem gosta do Campeonato Espanhol e do Inglês, por exemplo, não se acostuma a assistir o Brasileirão.

Voltando ao CAP, primeira derrota do ano. Fora de casa, normal. Agora é voltar à boa forma..

Concerning certainty, the Reformed scholastics have much to say, especially in the light of Descartes' "clear and distinct" standard of truth. For example, Turretin notes that there are three species of certainty 1) mathematical, 2) moral, and 3) theological (Institutes, II.iv.22).

Mathematical certainty (a.k.a. metaphysical certainty) has to do with things known by nature and things demonstrated by nature. For example, 1 + 1 = 2. This is metaphysically or mathematically certain: you can see and prove it and it is known by nature.

Moral certainty has to do with truth that cannot be demonstrated, but are so clear that all sensible men agree upon them. For example, we know that Abraham Lincoln was the president of the U.S. during the Civil War.

Theological certainty has to do with the truths that cannot be demonstrated or known by nature or empirical evidence, but truths that are founded on things divine - i.e. revelation. Scripture is this revelation, and it does not belong to the mathematically certain category, else faith would not be required. Neither does Scripture belong to the moral certainty category, else our faith would simply be historical assent, much like our assent to the fact that Lincoln was the president during the Civil War. We are theologically certain, however, that God is God and that Jesus died to save his people from their sins. Saving faith carries with it a "certain certainty."

R. Muller describes the Reformed scholastic teaching of certainty this way: "Since God is neither a natural principle nor a thing that can be known immediately through itself, but rather is known through his self-revelation, theology has its own species of certainty, related to the way of knowing that is specific to theology: faith. This definition, although not at all polemically stated, does have a gently anti-Cartesian edge in its denial of mathematical certainty" (PRRD, I.412).

Of course, this has everything to do with our finiteness, sinfulness, ectypal and analogical knowledge, and our "pilgrim" theology. We are not gods, nor do we have God-like archetypal and univocal certainty. Yet what we have is sufficient - theological certainty, or certainty of faith that "God is" and that the gospel is true for us.

This is helpful for our own wrestlings in the Christian life; it chases sinful doubts, and it frees us up from trying to attain mathematical certainty for things divine. It is also quite helpful for apologetic purposes, as we can show skeptics who want "proof" that they are pressing Christianity into wrong categories - categories that they themselves keep distinct in their daily lives.

Vania King vs. Violette Huck: I love this matchup only because of their names, and nothing more: two first names that start with "V" and roll off the tongue, and two short, sharp four-letter worded last names.  Sure, they're ranked 116 and 271 respectively, and their match might most likely suck.  But it's "Vania King vs. Violette Huck" and I just like saying (and typing) it.  (And I know it's hard to believe, but the next first round analyses might be a bit more in depth than this one was).

Karin Knapp vs. Martina Muller: Though the 32nd-seeded Italian Knapp (my favorite kind of Knapp!) is ranked way higher than the 85th-ranked German Muller, it is the German who has won all three of their matchups, most recently on clay in Palermo in '07.  So there could be an upset in the making here.

Kateryna Bondarenko vs. Dinara Safina: one of the eight billion Bondarenko sisters (give or take a few) squares off against the hit-or-miss talent of the 13th-seeded Safina - lately she has been mostly "hit", winning the tournament in Berlin and knocking out the likes of Dementieva, Azarenka, Serena Williams, and some chick named Henin, who promptly retired afterward.  Though Safina holds a 4-1 edge in their meetings, it is the 57th-ranked Bondarenko who won their most recent match, 6-2 7-5 in '07 on Los Angeles hard courts.  To add to the intrigue, Safina lost a match to Kateryna's older sister Alona by the bizarre score of 6-7 6-0 5-7.  So, yeah - this should be a fun one.

Samantha Stosur vs. Shahar Peer: Stosur, the Australian wildcard entrant ranked 150th in the world, has a real shot against the 17th-seeded Israeli Peer.  Though Peer has won two of their three matches, it is Stosur who won the most recent one, a 2006 matchup on hard courts.  Also, Peer has had some terrible recent results and had to skip the Strasbourg tournament with an injured shoulder.  Conversely, Stosur is coming back strong from a long layoff due to injury, and was once the #1-ranked doubles player and got as high as 27th in the singles rankings.  These are two players whose current trajectories are headed in different directions, and don't be too surprised if Stosur pulls off the upset.

Yung-Jan Chan vs. Tsvetana Pironkova: yeah, it's a match between two unseeded players (Chan is ranked 80th and Pironkova 47th), but I consider Chan to be one of the most dangerous floaters in the draw.  She made the semis of the current event in Strasbourg, BARELY losing to Katarina Srebotnik (who is the 27th seed in France) 1-6 7-6 4-6.  Plus the lower-ranked Chan has beaten Pironkova in their only meeting this year on clay in Berlin 6-2 7-5.  Look for Chan to win this match and then give 29th seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues (currently battling it out in the Strasbourg final against Srebotnik) a run for her money in the second round.

Anna Chakvetadze vs. Nuria Llagostera Vives: the 6th-seeded Chakvetadze has drawn a TOUGH first round opponent for her.  Though Llagostera Vives is only ranked 82nd, these two have played twice with each player winning a match in three sets.  Look for this to be a three-set affair as well.

Marion Bartoli vs. Casey Dellacqua: in an eerily similar circumstance to the Peer/Stosur matchup, this pairing finds a low-ranked but on-the-rise Australian (Dellacqua) facing an injured and struggling top ten seed.  Bartoli, France's top-ranked player, isn't even sure if she'll be able to go in this one, having withdrawn from Strasbourg with a right wrist injury.  The two have met twice before, and though Bartoli's won both their matches, the most recent in Charleston went three tough sets 7-5 4-6 6-1.  Even if Bartoli is 100%, this would be a tough draw for her.  Anything less than 100% and look for the Australian to prevail.

Katarina Srebotnik vs. Virginia Ruano Pascual: the 27th-seeded Srebotnik will have to rebound quickly from her final in Strasbourg against a wily veteran who has beaten her in all three matches they've played.  Granted, the most recent of those matches was four years ago, but in my book that still counts as a mental edge for Ruano Pascual.  Though Srebotnik has obviously been on form lately, she needs to be fresh if she wants to continue her winning ways in this first round.

Virginie Razzano vs. Klara Zakopalova: the 24th-seeded Frenchwoman Razzano needs to watch out in this match, as the 58th-ranked Czech has already beaten her in two of their three matches, most recently on a clay court in Prague in '07, 6-2 7-6.  The French crowd will have to help Razzano to victory in this one, I feel, but I definitely smell an upset brewing here.

Caroline Wozniacki vs. Yvonne Meusberger: another interesting prospect, as the 30th-seeded Wozniacki has played the 91st-ranked Austrian twice, winning once and losing once with both matches going three sets.  The Austrian Meusberger has the most recent win.  This one is definitely a toss up, and another three-setter should be in the works.

Well, that wraps up my look at intriguing first round matchups - there sure are a lot of them this year!  Or maybe I'm just easily intrigued.  Regardless, parts three and four of my draw analysis should be fun for the entire family, as I engage in the prognosticatory art of projection, examining possible second week pairings, players' histories in those matchups, and a whole bunch of useless asides!  I hope to see you in part three, where all the Big Names will be well and truly dealt with.

Nach dem Abendessen im Bratwurst-Röslein, das alle fränkische Spezialitäten anbietet (insbesondere die von mir geschätzten rohen Kartoffelklöße), und einem Spaziergang durch das wunderschöne Nürnberg setzten wir uns in die Grauersche Antiquariatsbuchhandlung, wo Titus Müller aus seinem neuen Buch "Das Mysterium" las.

Die spannende Geschichte um William von Ockham und die Katharer spielt im mittelalterlichen München. Als Thema wählte Titus "Perfektionismus". Seine Aussage, dass er selbst von diesem Problem betroffen sei und sich beim Schreiben verändern konnte, ließ eine bekannte Saite in mir anschwingen...

Titus beantwortete auch Fragen der Zuhörer und ging dann mit zum Café-Restaurant Zeitlos, wo er uns noch viele Tipps gab und von seiner Arbeit erzählte. Wir lernten auch andere Teilnehmer am Autorentreffen kennen, erzählten von unseren Schwerpunkten und tauschten Adressen aus.

Das ausgiebige Frühstückbuffet am nächsten Morgen erfüllte alle meine Wünsche, und mehr als nur gestärkt nutzte ich die verbleibende Zeit, um Nürnberg weiter kennen zu lernen.

Im Bildungshaus begrüßte uns Ursula Schmid-Spreer und gab uns die Tagungsunterlagen. Die enthaltenen Beiträge der Vortragenden kann ich nur empfehlen. Nachdem wir unsere Plätze im Fabersaal "besetzt" hatten, sichteten wir den Büchertisch. Hier möchte ich Sandra Uschtrin danken, die viele Probeexemplare der Zeitschrift Federwelt auflegte und Normseiten-Schneidbrettchen verschenkte.

Nachdem Ursula Schmid-Spreer die Veranstaltung eröffnet und langjährige Teilnehmer geehrt hatte, referierte Harald M. Landgraf (im Bild rechts stehend in weißer Kleidung während einer Pause) über den Heftroman, ein Thema, das mich seit jeher besonders interessiert, sowohl als Autor, als auch als Sammler utopischer Romanhefte.

Das Mittagessen im Marientorzwinger füllte meinen noch nachfrühstücklichen Magen erneut bis an seine (ohnehin weiten) Grenzen. Wieder schlossen wir neue Kontakte, außerdem brachten mir die Gespräche viele neue Ideen, die ich notieren musste.

Titus Müller eröffnete den Nachmittag, und meine Befürchtung, dass ich wegen des reichlichen Mittagessens seinen Ausführungen nur unkonzentriert folgen würde können, erfüllte sich nicht: so lebendig und interessant schilderte er seine Erfahrungen, ging sofort auf Zwischenfragen ein und gab Tipps zu Thema, Plotten und Überarbeitung. Die Tagungsteilnehmer umlagerten ihn auch noch in der Pause.

Den abschließenden Vortrag hielt Sabine Franke (in der Bildmitte ganz hinten neben Titus), Lektorin beim Mitteldeutschen Verlag in Halle und Leipzig. Sie zeigte uns, wie die genaue Kalkulation für ein Lyrikbuch ausehen könnte, und warb um Verständnis dafür, dass ein kleiner Verlag keine Vorschüsse zahlt. Besonders interessant und hilfreich fand ich ihre Tipps zum professionellen Einreichen eines Manuskriptes.

Das Abendessen in Café und Bar-Celona passte zu meinen anderen Mahlzeiten: (zu) viel und gut. Meine Sitznachbarin versorgte mich noch zusätzlich mit gebratenem Geflügel; anscheinend wirkte ich so ausgehungert. Sie schreibt übrigens Krimis.

Leider etwas zu kurz kam dann der Programmteil "Lesung aus eigenen Werken". Die Vortragenden zeigten teilweise hervorragende Qualität, und die Kommentare von Titus und anderen Teilnehmern wiesen mich auf Fehler hin, die ich auch immer wieder einbaue. Besonders gefallen haben mir die Reime von Herrn Benedikt (?), der mit einem Zitat von Tucholsky begann: "Das bisschen, was ich lese, schreibe ich selber".

Vielen Dank an Ursula Schmid-Spreer (3. von links) und ihren Ehemann für die Organisation des Autorentreffens. Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, welche Mühen und Schwierigkeiten sie überwinden mussten, um ein so hervorragendes Ergebnis zu erhalten.

Parole chiare, decise, che si commentano da sole.

Anche perché sono pronunciate da un vero e proprio pilastro del calcio mondiale. Un signore che raramente parla, e se lo fa, non lo fa mai a sproposito.

In Germania esistono davvero pochi mostri sacri : beh, Gerhard (per tutti Gerd) Muller è senza dubbio uno di questi.

E se Gerd Muller è convinto che quest’anno il “nostro” Luca Toni, con la maglia del Bayern Monaco, potrà superare il suo record di 40 goal in stagione, significa che ci sono concrete possibilità che ciò accada veramente.

Anche perché stiamo parlando di un fenomeno d’altri tempi. Un campione unico, uno di quelli che, con le sue raffiche di goal, ha scritto la storia del calcio moderno.

Cannoniere unico, uomo d’area immarcabile, forte col destro, col sinistro, di testa, in acrobazia : attaccante talmente completo da segnare, a cavallo degli anni ’70, oltre 400 reti tra nazionale e Bundesliga.

Uno di quei calciatori che difficilmente rinascono, fra i migliori di sempre nel suo ruolo.

E non si distingueva tanto per le sue doti tecniche, ma per i suoi goal. L’area di rigore era il suo habitat naturale : era rapace e “rapinatore”, il più rapido di tutti su una qualsiasi palla vagante.

“Bomber Der Nation” (tradotto “cannoniere nazionale”), in 15 stagioni di Bundesliga, fu capace di segnare 365 goal in 427 presenze (record resistente tutt’ora), conquistando 4 titoli di Germania, 3 coppe campioni consecutive (’74-’75-’76), una coppa delle coppe e una coppa intercontinentale.

Nelle coppe europee segnò 66 goal in 74 partite, mentre con la nazionale tedesca il numero delle reti ( 68 ) supera addirittura quello delle presenze ( 62 ).

Numeri che fanno venire la pelle d’oca. Ai quali basta aggiungere un pallone d’oro (1970), un titolo mondiale (1974), un titolo europeo (1972, nel quale fu anche capocannoniere della manifestazione) e un titolo di capocannoniere ai mondiali del 1970, quando la sua Germania Ovest giunse terza dopo aver perso la storica semifinale con l’Italia, nella quale Muller ovviamente andò a segno.

Pochi sanno che, dopo il ritiro dal calcio giocato (al termine di un’esperienza di 3 anni nel campionato americano con 38 goal all’attivo), Muller prese il vizio dell’alcol.

A toglierlo dal buio tunnel dell’alcolismo, furono i suoi ex compagni del Bayern, che gli diedero la possibilità di allenare il settore giovanile della squadra bavarese, ruolo che ricopre tutt’ora.

Se Toni riuscirà a raggiungere il record di 40 reti stagionali di Muller, magari sarà proprio di buon’auspicio per la nostra nazionale Italiana.

Infatti Muller vinse mondiale ed Europeo. Toni un mondiale l’ha vinto…per essere suo erede basta “solo” che vinca il prossimo Europeo.

Several different topics of Reformed Scholasticism along with the Jerry Bridges book I'm reading (Respectable Sins), made me consider one area of practical Christian humility: being humble in doctrinal matters. Someone here suggested that Bridges' section on "Doctrinal Pride" - the sinful pride that we are superior because our doctrine is "superior" - showed that Bridges was a bit soft on this part. Basically, Bridges argues that we can and should hold our doctrinal convictions strongly, but with humility and love for those with whom we disagree (see pages 92-93). I've come to agree with Bridges, as I made some deductions from Richard Muller's Post-Reformation Reformed Dogmatics.

I'm thinking of these three areas of Reformed theology specifically. 1) The scope of Scripture (scopus Scripturae), 2) The fundamental articles of the faith (articuli fundamentales), and 3) The perspicuity of Scripture (perspicuitas Scripturae sacrae). Let me explain:

1) The scope or "bullseye" of Scripture is the gospel of Jesus Christ. In Muller's summary of the Reformers, "The center of Scripture...is the redemptive significance of Christ at the very heart of God's saving revelation" (PRRD, II.208).

2) The fundamental articles of the faith are the main principles of the Christian faith which one must believe for salvation. In Reformed scholastic language, the fundamentals are the "primary rudiments of Christian Religion" (see Muller, PRRD, I.416). These are central teachings of the Christian faith: they are "drawn directly from Scripture and teach of salvation in Christ" (Muller, PRRD, I.419).

3) The perspicuity of Scripture means that the fundamental doctrines are stated clearly and plainly (Muller, PRRD, II.325). Or, in Trelcatius' notes, though not all things in Scripture are equally clear to all people, the things that pertain to salvation are sufficiently clear (Ibid.). This, of course, overlaps with the sufficiency of Scripture.

What do these three have to do with doctrinal humility? Well, as Bridges notes, we do have to stand up for doctrinal and biblical convictions. Using Reformed terms, we have to fight for and uphold the perspicuous fundamentals of Scripture and the scope of Scripture: the biblical teaching of the gospel of salvation by faith alone by grace alone in Christ alone for God's glory alone. There is the overarching and undeniably clear scope of Scripture: God's recorded redemptive plan is that Jesus saves his people from sin. We must, at all costs, uphold this essential truth of Scripture - we must hold it with what I call "strong and humble conviction."

Also, on the non-fundamentals, the "non-scope," and the non-perspicuous things we must show extra humility, if that makes sense. This also has to do with a previous post of mine on certainty - the "less certain" things in Scripture should induce all the more humility in us. One seminary professor of mine taught a non-fundamental/scope/perspicuous doctrine right out of Scripture passionately for a few hours; he had me convinced. At the end of his lecture, he - with genuine humility - said, "I could be wrong. See you tomorrow." I was confused at first, but now I see that this is what "doctrinal humility" is about.

Come to think of it, our teaching of total depravity should also factor in here. As I heard from the time I was a kid, Calvinists should be the most humble people on the face of this earth.
