Storage of Cleaning Supplies

Every Saturday there is a flurry of activity in our house to do the necessary chores so everyone can get to the sports or projects they want to do. Since we have so many different people doing chores it has been a good solution to divide up the cleaning supplies according to rooms of the house. For instance, the necessary cleaning supplies that are used to clean the bathrooms are in a plastic bin marked "Bathroom". That way everyone that has to clean some part of the bathroom can easily find his or her supplies without having to ask mom!

Other bins are marked: Kitchen, Windows/Walls, General Cleaning, Fabric Cleaning, Floors, Dusting

I wouldn't recommend that everyone organize their cleaning supplies this way but for those of us that have multiple people working on the same room it is a good option. Hope that helps!

That Favorite Piece...

Everybody's got one. Nothing too fine. It might have been fairly cheap and even mass produced, on sale at a department store...not a treasured heirloom piece for once, but all yours. But you love it anyway. Probably already has a hundred tiny scratches and a couple of loose screws. But it was something you just had to have and grabbed on a whim. And it seemed totally out of character for your house...big, black, and another thing to stub your toe on in already-cramped quarters...but you adore it.

For me, it's my generic black hall storage bench (found at Target a couple of years ago) with my Ikea pillows. It usually is strewn with kids' bookbags and blankets, but the kids are all gone to school right now, and all is tidied. But no matter -- it just makes the house cozier.

I just wish I had a practical family mudroom to put it in instead of my dining room.

We officially took possession of the house on Friday. Basically since we signed the papers I've been either strategizing or actually at the house trying to get everything ready for the massive transformation.

I've had the great pleasure since closing to get to meet several of the family members who previously owned the property. It's clearly a loving, wonderful family. It gives us so much hope that this home will hold many wonderful memories for us as well. I've been thinking lately that I can't remember being this excited about something going on in our lives. It truly feels like an epic chapter in our lives - one in which we will write the beginning chapters of what is hopefully a long history of love... And we want to put a lot of love in this house!

BUT - before love can be added, we'll need to bring a little bit of destruction!!! :)

with the trim work done and the bulk of the interior work taken care of it was time to put some color on the walls!

The trim and casework has started in the house and things are really starting to tighten up and look like a house. All the windows and doors have been trimmed out and the first of the three built in bookcases are up. With this in progress most of the walls that didn't get drywall are now covered. With any luck we'll be able to finish this place up soon.

WHOO HOO!!! Drywall is in. We never thought we'd see this day come! After a month in suspended animation where we thought we'd be living in a house that had a VERY open floor plan we finally have the drywall up and the first round of mud and tape has been applied. We had a few areas to fix after the drywall went up, but we are good to go. There are a few walls where there is no drywall - which was intentional. We have a number of built-ins and some architectural wood details planned for the fit and finish phase that will hopefully set our house apart.

After about a weeks worth of work we have new subflooring and sheathing done throughout the parts of the house where the flooring was just a total mess. This will help out big time now that the new hardwoods are a few days away from being delivered.
