Reema bestowed me with the Mr. Best Blogger Award this month. Yey!!!! I am on cloud number 9 for sure. Such a nice gift on Friendship Day. :D Congrats to all the other winners too. Well, we should award Reema too. So what should be her title? How is - Ms. Most Vivacious Blogger?

The trailer of Harry Potter and the half blood Prince hit the Internet last week and made some sort of a record. I am really looking forward to watch the movie which releases on December this year. And, yes, before you ask I haven't read the books. So, I don't know what is going to happen and so I am doubly excited. :D Here is the trailer -

Delhi was the hub of the Kanwariya menace a few days back. Loads of Orange colored men flocked the streets like a virus and disrupted the traffic. Trucks full of dancing people held traffic for hours and yours truly was a victim. The day it all ended, I was quite happy that I could at least reach office at time. The next day I was greeted by this sight. Sigh!!! This was due to some strike by the truck drivers. The blocked all the roads and left a little bit of area in between as an act of kindness to that the vehicles may pass and the chaos may increase some more. There is always a way to make someones life hell!!!

I should have guessed by the way Mallika was slapping Ranvir. Why can't we come up with something original? Aamir was one great attempt but we need more such movies. And while I am on it, do watch the Korean Movie if you can get hold of it. It was the biggest blockbuster of all times in Eastern Asia and I really loved the ending.

We had a 1970s Bollywood theme party last Wednesday at 32nd Milestone in Gurgaon which was sponsored by our client. I was not able to get hold of what I was exactly looking for but finally I did managed to look like a movie star. ;) We danced, got drunk, ate a fabulous dinner and did some bowling at the end. The best part was that I later came to know that the bus which left the office that evening at 6 pm reached my home at 11.30 pm because of the ultra heavy rains that day. Thank God, I was not in that bus or I would have hanged myself from the curtains in the bus.

After belittling all the reality shows in the Ramdomizer, this might come as a real shocker to you that I am writing something good about a reality show. I have been seeing Comedy Circus ever since I shifted to Delhi as my family is a great fan of the show. And I am hooked. Everyone in the show is exceptional, may it be Krishna, Sudesh Lahiri, Shailesh or the mega hilarious Shaane Shakeel. The judges compliment the participants and Archana's laughter is the highlight of the show. A must watch. Here are a few acts from the show. To watch more, try searching for Comedy Circus on Youtube.

India got its first individual Gold Medal in the Olympics. When I got the news I thought my friend was joking. But its true!!!! And its great!!!! Congratulations to Abhinav Bindra. Its not a small achievement. The Indian News channels must be really happy. They now have the fodder for next 4 days. They are going to tear apart the whole family tree of Abhinav to find out the answer to one question - How the hell???

The last 7 days was the longest I have stayed away from blogging, all thanks to my MTNL Broadband connection. We all have experience of a certain category of friends who stay with us when things are hunky dory but abandon the ship as soon as something goes wrong. MTNL will remind you of such friends. It took the customer care 6 days to figure out the problem. 6 DAYS!!!!! Airtel has an SLA(Service Level Agreement) of 1 day which means that they have to fix the problem in 1 day. The MTNL staff is purely lethargic and incapable of any action till you reach them through the proper channel. Yes!!!! We had to ask a high officer to intervene. I HATE MTNL.

Quick Summary of Government's 3G guidelines :

Entry of foreign players (need to hold equity of atleast 26% in the JV floated with Indian partner)

Global auction will be conducted for 3G spectrum and all players having Unified Access Service (UAS) license or those eligible for the license would be allowed to participate.

10 slots of spectrum will be available for auction - 3 will be reserved for CDMA (spectrum: 50 MHz, 800 MHz and 1900 MHz frequency band.)

The spectrum will come with a reserve price of Rs 2,240 crore for a pan-India license.

The reserve price for a 2×5 Mhz block of spectrum for Mumbai and Delhi (both will have only 2 slots each of 5MHz available for allocation) and category-A shall be Rs160 crore and for Kolkata and category-B Rs80 crore and for category-C Rs30 crore. Spectrum for pan-India license would cost at least Rs2,020 crore.

BSNL and MTNL have one slot reserved to offer 3G services in their respective circles of operations.

The operators will be exempt from paying any licence fees for the first year (will be charged one % of AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) every year).

This is surely a great news for foreign players like Qualcomm and BSNL/ MTNL are all set to launch 3G services in the next 6 months (iPhone to be available by next month - perfect timing!)

Typically every argument about India’s progress starts with poverty and ends with corruption.

Typically every argument about India's progress starts with poverty and ends with corruption. If you ask people to define corruption, most of them they give you a blank stare or run to get a dictionary. Then if you ask people to identify the exact corruption incidents and the rough estimate of monetary costs in their life, most of the time you get that blank stare.

Yet everybody seems to be very sure that corruption is the problem.

Let me tell you one story here. Around 1985, the performance of Bombay Telephone, only telephone company in Bombay, operated by government, was very poor. You had to register to get telephone and it could easily take 4-5 years (from the date you registered) to actually get a telephone connection in your home. It was a well known secret that you could bribe somebody inside to get your name ahead in the queue and get you telephone earlier.

In 1990 the privatization began and several new schemes were introduced. One of the schemes was "Immediate connection", wherein you could pay a large amount as a deposit and you would get connection immediately. The scheme was nicely packaged as new era customer friendly deal.

What is the difference? In both cases the "deal" so to speak served customers who could afford to pay more for a connection (like traders, businessmen, etc.) and who needed connection a lot sooner. In first case the money went to the individual employee, in second case it went to the organization. So does the first case qualifies as corruption, as second as service?

The reality is tiered service is the need of the time. Demand - Supply is the basis of any economic theory. And if the demand is not being met by system, then it will be met by bypassing the system.

Corruption is not the main problem in most of the cases. The main problem is poorly designed systems.

Indeed there are some cases where corruption is the problem. There was a case before some days when in UP, some people found the medicine bottles in the pharmacy were filled with water. This is not a corruption, this is crime. This is not system bypass, this is atrocity. There is no justification for this.

But for a large range of other cases, we must stop expecting something else. We must stop expecting people to behave differently.

I remember before a few days, we were waiting outside a railway station. It was raining heavily. We were looking for a taxi. A taxi driver stopped next to us and asked for double the fair. My friend got irritated and refused. The taxi driver left.

Since both of us have visited USA, the argument obviously turned to taxi drivers in USA. We talked about how impolite and how corrupt the taxi driver was.

Some time later I was reading in newspaper about the Bandh, and how it stopped the Rikshaw and taxi business that day. I wondered, would anyone go and give some money to the taxi driver to cover him up for this type of days? If not, then what is the option for him other than taxing more money from me when I am in need? That is his way of providing "insurance" for the days he will lose business because of Bandh and Rail Roko and Riots and worst case, auto accidents.

In several countries, there is a system of tip. To all people whose income depends on the time they work everyday, people add about 10-15% extra on the charge for the service. This is precisely to cover them on rainy days.

So if we do not have any voluntarily provided cover for rainy days, it makes sense that the Taxi driver would solicit more fair when he is in stronger position.

The more I think, the more I see basic human dynamics at work. What we need is redesigning "systems", not redesigning "human nature" to reduce corruption.

It was only a matter of time before it affected the cricket fraternity & today we are seeing cricket under the influence of that transformation.

A bit of trivia indulgence takes us back to the Packer phenomenon, which dealt with rights, social & financial uplift-men of players In terms of a metaphor we can describe the Packer era as the” INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION” in the world of cricket.

On the other hand the T20 phenomenon and the launch of the ICL & Stanford league is a metaphor of globalization & privatization of the sport and it is for public sector units (read BCCI & ICC) of the sport to acclimatize to the new change or perish.

The BCCI stance to leagues like the ICL has been like the iconic stance take by Ford motors which once shoved products with the approach of “you can have a car in any color as long as it is black”; how relevant that iconic positioning holds today for Ford is anybody’s guess. Similarly the BCCI needs to look at the change in order the sports consumption pattern is undergoing & change its approach towards two areas; first private entrepreneurship in the world of cricket & the basic product dynamics of all three forms of the game.

ICL which started the city league format has seen its innovative format being replicated around the world. With it’s first off the blocks advantage today the ICL has built a formidable resource base in terms of player pool, facilities and support staff and it is for the BCCI to take a stance of either a synergistic approach or antagonistic position. The BCCI needs to understand that with a tight international calendar and large player pool it needs to outsource some portions of its domestic cricket to a private body so that majority of Indian domestic players receive the best of financial & social benefits.

It is a logical business solution of outsourcing & as a sports organization which prides itself on its financial success; it baffles me as to how the messiahs of modern sports management (Lalit Modi & CO) do not see the benefit of doing the same.

The rich representation of the ICL players in what is probably the oldest cricket league in the world (English County), was as an eye opener for cricket pundits who so far took the bait that ICL was a league of second rung and retired players.

The ICL is in the growth mode & with every tournament has thrown up a stronger player base (look at the progression in its foreign player signing since its inception) & therefore it is logical for the BCCI to bring the ICL under its fold to capitalize on the ICL resources.

Some may say that with IPL the BCCI has proved its might, but on the other hand the IPL has opened a Pandora’s Box which has seen countering polices adopted by old guards (ECB& PCB) against the shift in power. The result is initiatives like Stanford-ECB tie up or a proposed Pakistan Cricket League.

It would be a catastrophic mistake to rest on the inaugural IPL laurels. New leagues and initiatives will mean new challenges for the IPL in forthcoming editions. Also one needs to understand that the IPL has monetized its product financially to its full potential. This is at least for the next couple of years till they add new teams & increase the IPL calendar. On other hand, Stanford & ICL are in the growth mode; two years is a long time and things may just take a U-turn if the BCCI stance remains static.

The second point that ICC needs to address is the product format of especially its two longer formats of the game, One day internationals & Test cricket.

If they still rest on artificial assumptions that test cricket is the supreme format of the game (based on ex- players opinion) then they will be in for a rude shock. The arrival of T20 format is like the introduction of private news channels in the world of single state broadcaster or private telecom operators in the ruling times of BSNL & MTNL.

This area has been identified by astute readers of the game like Jaideep Ghosh (Cricketnext.com) & Harsha Bhogle (ESPN Star). Jaideep has thrown light of having a 125 over format in tests,(Ref: www.cricketnext.com). Harsha has dwelled on the introduction of two innings format for the one- dayers.

It is time for the ICC to consider these opinions with utmost seriousness; after all it survives in the modern competitive sporting scenario with mass sporting disciplines like soccer , Formula-1 & rugby to name a few.

MTNL will initially have 21 channels on their platform.

With Mobile TV, slowly but surely, we are witnessing the mobilization of what was a "lean-back", in-home service, in to a "watch anywhere, anytime" on-demand service. In some countries, as has been the case with simple voice calls, we may well even see the consumption of TV primarily via the mobile (data) medium, rather than via a cable/satellite system.

Broadband subcription numbers have increased significantly in the last year (+50%) but from a very small base. According to TRAI, the telecom regulator, there were 3.90 million residential broadband subscribers at the end of March. Public operators BSNL and MNTL currently provide 65% of broadband subscriptions. the largest private ISP is Airtel, with 0.7 million customers.

PC sales have also been dynamic, particularly over the last quarter, MAIT, an association representing computer vendors, recently reported a 11% increase on sales year-on-year. Laptop sales have increased 59%. Another survey by market research firm IDC gives a 25% increase in PC sales for Q3'07 and a 84% increase in laptop sales.

IPTV is still at a very nascent stage in India. Bharti and Reliance Communications (part of R-ADAG) have both announced that they will soon start offering IPTV services. Bharti, India's largest mobile company is currently running a test on 1,000 households around Delhi, and should launch the service next summer. Reliance Communications only offers Internet services to companies for now, but wants to foray into residential services, including 'triple play'. MNTL, a public company, is slightly ahead of the game, as it has already launched an IPTV service in Mumbai (Bombay) and claims to count 6,000 subscribers. MNTL is currently facing regulatory problems as TRAI says its Basic Service Operator (land-line) license does not allow it to offer IPTV services.

It is unlikely that IPTV will take off in the short run, given the low PC and broadband penetration, and lack of LLU. Consultancy Gartner believes IPTV will not develop fast enough to compete with DTH and digital cable. We give a complete overview of IPTV in India in this document.

it was 2001 and there was an unsent admit card that was vexing me. there were only a few weeks left

it was 2001 and there was an unsent admit card that was vexing me. there were only a few weeks left for the exam and i had spent more than a thousand on the form. phone calls to the institute didn't help. someone suggested me to email the concerned people for help.

email?? what's that? when i was leaving for the cyber cafe, brother asked me to take some hundred rupees. may be they would charge similar to a STD call.

the cyber cafe wallah was too co-operative. from creating my first email id to sending my first mail, i did it all here. and all for just Rs 10/ hour.

i chatted for the first time on the net. unfortunately the girl on the other side moved out of the chat within a few minutes. "hey u r vry slw". i was a newbie then but rarely are people online so tolerant about about your weaknesses. even today i use not more than two fingers on each hand, i mean for typing, still i am fast.

also i had my first experience at watching porn then. now that boys as less than 12 are caught watching porn, i was not as fortunate. here too i was shy enough to even be caught by the cyber cafe wallah watching porn. besides he thought of me as too sidha. also i didn't want to break his perception. so i logged out before time.

from that time onwards, i have forever become fantasised with internet.

in those days internet used to be very slow. so an hour of internet surfing was rarely worth the money spent.

then i moved to pune for higher studies. there i got a little more trained in the use of internet. the internet charges were a little less here but offered better speed. had my first encounter with google then. there was a presentation to be made and the major part, from research to presentation, was to be done by me.

again used the google during my summer projects. as i didn't know much of keywords then, the searches on google were hardly satisfying, generally led to irrelevant searches. this fostered my belief that google was seldom helpful.

after returning from pune, and during the periods of unemployment, i came across this very attractive job opportunity in the newspaper classified. "earn more than 15000 from home." there were two lessons that i gained during my short stint at this job:

what looks attractive at first sight is most probably not good

everything, good or bad, is for good at the end

the job was simple. everyday the company would send you a large number of mails in your inbox. you would have to simply open up the mails and advertisements on it and then move on to the other mail. and for each ad opened, you would receive a cent. a cent and a cent and a cent somehow makes a dollar. so i went on religiously opening the mails.

3 months and more but my account showed not more than a dollar. in how many months will i make some money. finally i gave up. also the internet charge was making a dent in my pocket money. the first lesson learnt.

soon i got my first job offer. this time for a real job. thanks to spending several hours on the internet, i was pretty adept at working on it. the second lesson learnt. and my first job involved searching for matter on the net and then rephrasing it in my own words.

i had my own computer with internet fitted to it. i was satisfied.

two years into the job, i subsequently became the master at using the net and the vast resource of information it offered.

during this time i bought my home computer as well. it was a first. i was doing freelancing. home internet would save on time.

the internet providers talk about connecting the entire country, but they aren't even able to connect the whole of national capital. MTNL was the only choice. soon this too turned to be a failure. since there was no double cable coming to my colony, there will be no internet for me. "but why didn't you tell me about it at the time of connection". no reply. cost > Rs 1500

then came airtel. no not the broadband one. it was to be connected through mobile and then to the computer. i specially took a postpaid connection for the same. but umpteen number of calls to the customer care didn't help. each time a new person took the call and every time i had to explain the entire thing. finally after a month, i got the connection cut. Cost > Rs 2400

just when i was hapless in my tryst with bringing internet to my home that i joined my present company. the best thing was that they gave you a laptop to be taken to home. a reliance datacard connected you to internet. for the first few weeks, evenings were spent on internet, doing everything that i had forever wished for.

(6) Telecommunications

This movie is a journey along Wilders positions on freedom of expression, democracy and Muslims. Click here to watch.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has raised objections saying that MTNL, being a basic service operator, cannot offer value-added services like Internet Protocol Television (IPTV).

However, despite objections, MTNL launched its IPTV service in Mumbai on Mar 20, 2008, saying they would not let down subscribers waiting for the service since it was a much publicised and sought-after service. “We have been operating the service on a smaller scale for two years. For us, IPTV is a value-added service being provided by a basic service operator. We will reply to TRAI,” said MTNL chairman R S P Sinha.
