Barack & Curtis: Manhood, Power & Respect [Short Documentary On How Their Is a 50 Cent In Obama & More]

A short documentary film examining the contrasting styles of manhood exhibited by Presidential Candidate Barack Obama and Rapper/Mogul Curtis Jackson, aka 50 Cent. By Byron Hurt.

Good Boys (2005) is an Israelite film by Yair Hochner that tells the story of two young male prostitutes who meet one night and the events that change their lives.  The film is not for the weak hearted and definitely not for anyone under 18. 

It is filmed in such a way that there is a stark reality to the feel of the film.  It is like a reality show that is not meant to be entertaining but in the very real sense sobering. Hochner pulls no punches in showing the seediness of the prostitution lifestyle and the challenges these young men face in their daily life.

There is an overall sense of sadness that drapes itself over the whole movie as you watch the turmoil in the lives of the boys and the exploitation that occurs. The marginalization of people is also a message that comes across vividly in this film. 

Yuval Raz plays Tal, is held against his will by a renegade cop and is basically abused and raped all night by different men, in one of the most psychologically harrowing parts of the movie. In a desperate act, he finally fights for himself after being told over and over again that he was worth nothing by his captor. He was told repeatedly it was okay for him to be treated the way he was being treated because he was a gay prostitute.

As hard as that scene was to watch, it brought home the filth of our collective souls when we as a society marginalized people and relegate them to less then the human beings. We do this to justify our evil acts so we will not bear the consequences. The truth is, as history has proven, the consequences always follow.

Daniel Efrat plays Menni, the other male lead, who searches for love but is facing the hardened reality of prostitution.  He seeks parental solace in the tired and worn out, but kind, transgendered mother figure played by Gila Goldstein.  He also has a baby from a tryst he had with a female prostitute in the past, another sad figure, Mika, played Nili Tzerruya.

There is a moment in the film where Mika almost abandons her toddler in a public square so she can go trick.  She finally leaves the child with Menni as she descends further into prostitution and drug addiction. In one scene in the whore house, as she is in the middle of servicing a client, the camera focuses on her face, which has gone blank.  At that moment you knew she was lost.

The movie ends with the sun rising and maybe with some hope for some of the characters. It left me disturbed by the ugliness I saw but must admit that Hochner was able to portray this story in such a riveting way. His film won several awards in the Independent film circuit.

I am not sure if it is a film for everyone. It is a film that does not leave your mind quickly. Frankly, I needed to wash myself down with another viewing of the Sound of Music to remind me there is still good in this world. Thank God for you, Julie Andrews!

I wasn't originally happy with the choice of Robert Pattinson to play Edward but my oh my he was looking good in this trailer.  Definitely looks like a lot has changed from the books.  Like all the things Edward shows Bella after she guesses he's a vampire.  Also the fight scene looks drawn out and has Edward fighting James instead of Jasper and Emmett.  I wonder if they will have Bella being thrown around and bitten by James.

From what I hear, that show's pretty big in a number of European countries - specifically Italy.

The live-action remake is being helmed by Takashi Miike.  Best known in the West for his cult shocker Ichi the Killer (yes, I do have a copy of that) and his cameo in 2005's Hostel, Miike-san has already proven that he can do something a bit more family-friendly with 2004's Zebraman.

Anyway, I've got a hunch this early that this will suck just as bad as the Hollywood bastardization of Speed Racer.  When it comes to turning anime series to live-action, only Japanese producers and filmmakers can pull it off (though the wretched Devilman film stands as an exception, being an attempt to emulate the eye-candy approach of Hollywood filmmakers in treating comicbook/ animated properties)

One can say that by his passing, Paul Newman has managed to draw a tear to many an eye of those who have worked with him as well as those who have been influenced not only by his low-key manner of life but the way he has lived it.  His long-lasting marriage to Joanne Woodward (whom he also directed in some of her movies) has defied industry convention; at least he needn't have to worry about any of his offspring raising hell and besmirching his legacy.  Nevertheless, he managed to live a full life, diversifying his interests into such fields as health-food manufacturing and auto racing - he was still burning laps down the speedway several months before his sudden passing from a heart attack.  Even when his screen appearances have become more infrequent, he has managed to make each and every one of them count.

Nothing can compare, though, to Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, his team-up with Robert Redford which practically rewrote the rules of the Western, in more ways than one...

The Burt Bacharach score is to die for....

Gotta admit...I've not been a follower of Newman's work (though I did catch both The Color of Money and Road to Perdition - and fell asleep while watching the latter!)  He's going to be definitely a tough act to follow...however, the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben Affleck stand to inherit his mantle.  Only time will tell if they do play their cards right and follow his career trajectory.

Going back to the business at hand, I was off by a couple of days in predicting the playdate for Mirrors, but I really feel like an ass in thinking that Beverly Hills Chihuahua would be released around the last week of September.  Just the same, local releases will remain in orange while must-sees are in italics.

I just hope that the R-rated grittiness of the source material (yet another adaptation from a PC/console game?? See Mutant Chronicles above) would be retained...it'd be a pity if it may wind up as yet another stinker.  Nevertheless, the presence of Mark Wahlberg should make this worthwhile - not to mention a solid supporting performance from Chris "Ludacris" Bridges (heeeyyy Luda, lay off the Marky Mark jokes, huh)

Then again, wasn't bullet-time a cinematic fancy whose novelty has long since passed?

I liked Shoot 'Em Up last year, so if Max Payne would be going down that stylistic direction, maybe I'd give it a whack.

The movie looks and feels ridiculous in notion to some who have yet to be exposed to the issues surrounding this fact that has become part of regular business in the USA. Some fear the same situation could happen in Canada depending on how Canadian voters, vote on October 14th.

The movie was written by John Cusack, Mark Leyner, Jeremy Pisker to help reach even more people with regard to the unethical business of war profiteering, being disguised as corporate outsourcing of military actions/services.

Public/civil services such as policing and military (as well as jails and disaster relief) have been handed over to private for profit corporations that are not government regulated, yet are government funded with tax payer dollars. Some of the arguments against these private corporations are that they don't do the job they claim they can do. Along with allegations of human rights violations and war profiteering, the country in this case USA, has spent even more money funding these corporations than had they done the job with the military/policing structures that were originally in place. These are just a few of the complaints against the government's decision to release these vital civil services to unregulated corporations. Many informed Americans are looking for ways to have their governments reverse the situation before it becomes even more disastrous. It's said that the human rights violations at current out weigh any positive argument to have contracts with these companies.

Hilary Duff was perfect in her part, as were all the other actors including John Cusack, an amazing onscreen force as usual (everyone loved the fight scenes). My group of movie goers were ages 40, 35, 22, 21, 20, 18, 16, and 3- 15 year olds. There was some hushed discussion once they realized Yonika Babeyeah was Duff; The kids even let me talk some politics with them on the way home from the movie and afterwards. All liked the movie, the boys (3- 15year olds loved it!) One still quotes certain parts... it was a great way to start some conversations about the bigger issues going on in the world, that would have seemed too deep and confusing otherwise. Having War, Inc. to relate to made it easy to open up the discussions that not only covered what the movie was about but other idea's as well that will hopefully have a positive effect on how they see themselves and their responsibilities in the world.

Recalling certain parts of the movie during our conversations kept everyone interested and they even asked questions, some I couldn't answer but at least they were thinking about big world issues and how being their best could help make changes. It was the weekend and it had just begun, so the converstion ended but hopefully not for long. I'm looking forward to getting the DVD and finding the answers to those questions that were asked that I was unable to answer or give an opinion on.

Alternate Title: Every Dog Has it's Day

Story: Doggone it! I wanted to lap up this film ever since I saw the trailer last summer. Sadly, this movie does not have a dog's chance of getting many Lobo Woofs. The adorable trailer (below) got me all psyched to see singing and dancing Chihuahuas. Do not be hoodwinked. The producers were lying like dogs. The movie doe not have any singing and prancing chihuahuas. Boo hiss.

What it does have is a slim plot surrounding a pampered Chihuahua who lives in Beverly Hills. The dog, Chloe, is put in the dog sitting hands of a spoiled niece of Chloe's owner. Cut to the chase, Chloe gets lost in Mexico and has a scary run in with mean people who run an illegal dog fighting ring. How Chloe finds her inner bark and eventually her home is the meat of this three dog night tale.

The movie was directed by Raja Gosnell. Let this sleeping dog lie.

Acting: Piper Perabo as the spoiled niece was boring. Jamie Lee Curtis as Chloe's owner was manic. Manola Cardona as the landscaper was under utilized. The voices of the various dogs were Drew Barrymore, Andy Garcia, Edward James Olmos, George Lopez, Salma Hayek, Cheech Marin, Luis Guzman and are you ready? Plácido Domingo

Trivia: The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world and is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Chihuahuas are prized for their devotion, ferocity, and personality. One unique trait in most chihuahuas is the tendency to "burrow" into blankets or clothing in order to sleep.

Predilection: I have a rescue dog named Benny (that's him on the left) that is one part chihuahua. His face is all chihuahua but the rest of his 30 pound body is - well up for grabs.

Critters: Dogs, glorious dogs and a computer generated iguana and rat.

Sex Spectrum: It is a Disney film.

Blatant Product Placement: I do not remember any products but there is a public service ad at the end concerning the importance and responsibility of dog adoptions.

Alternate Title: Coming Home

Story: Whoa! This is a tough film to sit through but hang onto your popcorn and get ready for one fascinating cinematic ride. The family depicted in this film have been trough the ringer. Daughter Rachel is about to be married. Other daughter Kym, is being let out of nine months in rehab to attend the wedding. There is an unspoken family tragedy and emotional scars are evident everywhere. The film is exquisitely directed by Jonathan Demme and sensitively written by Jenny Lumet.

This is a character driven piece that requires forgiveness and understanding on the viewer's behalf. How this scarred family gets through the highs and lows of what should be a joyous occasion are at the heart of the story. Can amends be made and redemption found? Will Kym be able to step outside of herself and let her sister be the star? Will the bride be able to let go of some of her anger? Will the family be able to reconcile any of the unspoken events?

If you like cinema that is raw, honest and does not give you a Hollywood ending - this is your film.

Acting: Anne Hathaway as Kym, has had a break out role in her otherwise ingenue career. She handles it well. Rosemarie DeWitt as Rachel, is simply put - sensational. Bill Irwin as the father is terrific. Tunde Adebimpe as bridegroom Sidney, is fine in a small role. Debra Winger as the mother gives a knock out performance. Kudos to her.

Trivia: Jonathan Demme directed 7 different actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Mary Steenburgen, Jason Robards, Christine Lahti, Dean Stockwell, Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster and Tom Hanks. Steenburgen, Hopkins, Foster and Hanks won Oscars for their performances in one of Demme's movies. Bill Irwin is a graduate in theatre arts from Oberlin College, OH, a graduate of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's Clown College, FL, and received a MacArthur Genius Grant in 1984. Writer Jenny Lumet is the daughter of director Sidney Lumet and granddaughter of Lena Horne.

Predilection: I like Jonathan Demme films.

Critters: A beautiful standard black poodle

Food: Food glorious food. The father in this family cannot serve enough food. It is the panacea for everything that ails this troubled group.

Sex Spectrum: A quickie in the garage.

Blatant Product Placement: Pepsi

Soundtrack: Lots and lots of music by Zafer Tawil and Donald Harrison, Jr Demme's own son is one of the guitarists.

Opening Titles: Black background with an interesting selection of fonts.

Visual Art: This is an upper class family from Connecticut and the house displays that good taste on its walls.

Theater Audience: Two other guys in the secret balcony with me.

Weather: It is fall in CT. Sun, rain and a little of everything else.

Sappy Factor: 0

Quirky Meter: 0

Squirm Scale: The depth of problems in this family is squirmy.

Drift Factor: I thought there were passages that could have been tightened.

Predictability Level: Moderate

Tissue Usage: I welled up a few times.

Oscar Worthy: I would be delighted to see Debra Winger get a Best Supporting nod for her amazing performance. The Academy likes the type of roles that Ann Hathaway plays in this film - but I do not think it Oscar worthy.

Big Screen or Rental: Either will do. You can rent many films about weddings including, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Monsoon Wedding, Father of the Bride, Runaway Bride, My Best friend's Wedding, Muriel's Wedding, Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Wedding Singer, Bride and Prejudice, The Wedding Planner, Love Actually and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Length: Under two hours.

I have to confess that I'm a little nervous about the upcoming Confessions of a Shopaholic movie.  I'm a HUGE fan of all the Sophie Kinsella books and I'm not sure that they will be able to replicate the laugh-out-loud, no-she didn't-do-that moments that the Becky Bloomwood books offer in spades.  Regardless, the movie, out this February, will have people clamoring for the entire series, if only to experience the real thing.  Take a look at the trailer...I'm still hopeful, but I'll make sure to have my personal copies handy to re-read if it doesn't live up to my (admittedly high) expectations.  And if I'm really disappointed by the movie, well I can always go shopping to cheer myself up...

Alternate Title: Hearts of Darkness

Story: In an unnamed city that represents anywhere urban life an epidemic of sudden blindness erupts. Social order is quickly reduced to panic and fear. The Government responds by warehousing the people who were initially inflicted under the guise that this disease is contagious. The film is focused on Ward One in this prison. No one has a name. No one has a background. Everyone is leveled by this disease. An eye doctor's wife, who is not inflicted, enters the prison with her husband, pretending she is blind as well.

In the manner of disintegrating social order (think Lord of the Flies) people are reduced to characatures of themselves. They either rise to the occasion or are reduced to their most base levels. The characters are stripped of their backgrounds and identities and essentially have to reinvent themselves to survive.

It is a fascinating, dark and mostly depressing vision of humanity. The devolution of social order is the predominant theme. How people find their hearts in darkness is the light at the end of the tunnel. This film is not for everyone but if you want to see some visually impressive filmmaking with across the board terrific acting, check it out.

It was deftly directed by Fernando Meirelles and written by Don McKellar. It is based on José Saramago's Nobel Prize winning 1995 novel.

Acting: Julianne Moore as the Doctor’s Wife is fascinating to watch. Mark Ruffalo as the Doctor was a bit weak for me. Alice Braga, the Woman With Dark Glasses is beautiful and worked well Yusuke Iseya as the First Blind Man was a little stereotypical for my tastes. Yoshino Kimura as the First Blind Man’s Wife was grace under fire. Don McKellar as the Thief and is also the writer was great. Maury Chaykin as the despicable Accountant was perfect. Mitchell Nye as the token Boy, was fine but unnecessary to the film. Danny Glover as the Man With Black Eye Patch, was a medicated Danny Glover and Gael García Bernal as the very King of Ward Three, was, as always, beautiful (even when he is very very bad).

The quick recap (and I mean VERY quick)- New York was fantastic.

Fitz and I were able to enjoy some delicious meals with old friends, relish the fall season in the most energetic city in the world, shop around Soho, and I only encountered three rats in five days. One was the size of a small pony. Overall, my time on the east coast was simply stellar. I will download and post pictures tomorrow!

Thanks to the wonder that is the Blackberry, I heard that the new Twilight movie trailer will be out on October 9th. Once available, I will most certainly post it for all you vampire nerds to enjoy. Confirmation of such news can be found here.

This weekend a dream was lost. My beloved Cubs have fallen apart and let go of the passion that fueled them through this baseball season, and succumbed to the Dodgers. I'm beyond sad at the thought of this being the end of the road...after 100 years...there simply aren't words to describe the pain. Naturally, I will be back next year, still rooting and believing that something great will eventually happen. But right now, I'm just going to sulk and grieve the loss of what could have been.

For now...I'm just enjoying some D'Agostino's thin crust with Fitz while watching old reruns of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and unwinding from a wild weekend. Good night!
