i slacked off and have not bothered to update this blog for a long time. have been somewhat busy bonding with my little one. now that i have started writing, i have to write about my little hero sometime soon.

ok the main thought for today is that motorola sinking is a very good thing. they make really dumb software. both in their phones and for pc connectivity.

i try to launch their motorola tools software to update some images. their software update center opens. there is no option to cancel it. i said OK to go ahead and check for updates. it showed up 2 updates (145 kb and 13 mb). i said i just need to launch the software and unclick both of them and hit next. it tells me that i "have" to select at least 1 update to install. i picked the one that had the smallest size and hit next. it went ahead and still updated all the items in the list. took close to 20 minutes to do it.

and then it took another 10 to install the updates it downloaded. it then restarted the software and popped open another download dialog for another software update. this time it is 75 mb. took another 30 to dowload and install. all this for a crap piece of software that is used to sync media back and forth between the phone and the pc. the software did eventually come up and crashed twice.

yep. their software converted me for good. i am never ever buying any more motorola shit.

p.s. - i know some of you iphonies are going ga-ga and thumping your chests on how great your god phone is. well, i am sure it is somewhat better, but definitely not worth the TCO.

Retail market watcher NPD Group is reporting that cell phone sales were down 22% in the first quarter compared to the same quarter last year.

If I'm reading this correctly, it's also saying that it's the first time sales have fallen between the busy holiday quarter and the first quarter.

RIM isn't so concerned since they actually increased their sales and edged out Sanyo to become the fifth largest cell phone manufacturer.

Here's how things break down:

Motorola: 27%

Samsung: 18%

LG: 17%

Nokia: 8%

RIM BlackBerry: 5%

Not making the list was Apple, but don't feel bad for the Cupertino-based company--I think they'll be okay. In the nine months up to March of 2008 they managed to sell 5.4 million iPhone's. Pretty good for a new player in the highly competitive cell phone industry.

With Nokia, Apple and RIM all trying to flex their muscles and become the new gatekeepers of the mobile Internet, carriers are responding by making their own moves. AT&T and Vodafone are amongst likely buyers of Huawei's handset unit.

Huawei Technologies, the largest mainland manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, is attracting interest from global industry players such as AT&T, the largest phone companyin the United States, and private equity firms including Blackstone on its sale of more than 50 per cent of its handset unit, sources said.
Kids these days are wielding more power over how video and televised entertainment are being pumped

Kids these days are wielding more power over how video and televised entertainment are being pumped into their homes, according to new research from Motorola. The company studied the influence and behaviors of the Millennial generation (young adults ages 16 - 27), and the results are not surprising: They want HD content when they want it, wherever they want it.

Some highlights from the Motorola study include:

71 percent of Millennials influence parental decisions about cable, DSL or satellite services.

62 percent have influence over purchasing an HDTV set and programming package.

Nearly 50 percent of DVR-owning Millennials use it for half of their TV watching.

84 percent are interested in TV and movie content on demand.

83 percent want to be able to download TV from a DVR to their mobile players.

Again, the results of the study aren't surprising. Modern TV setups are complex, so its natural to lean on the guidance from your connected child. Additionally, this generation was the first to get a taste of consuming content on its own terms. Just wait until the post-Millenials, who have never known anything but on-demand, start making the decisions.

Was Airave Sprint's second choice?

This article makes the interesting assertion that Sprint originally planned to roll out a WiFi dual mode service, but switched to femtocells after the launch of HotSpot@Home by T-Mobile. The author argues that femto was therefore Sprint's second choice, but it looks to me as though the headline should read "Sprint prefers femtocells".

Dean Bubley's femto forecast

Dean Bubley makes a "top of the head" femto forecast on his Disruptive Wireless blog this week: <1m in 2009; 2-3m in 2010; 4-5m in 2011; 5-8m in 2012. Many analysts are predicting "hockey-stick" uptake from 2010, but Dean is more sceptical about how fast the market will take off, and believes that "femtos will only become truly massmarket when we get to LTE".

(Elsewhere, based on stats showing that those who substitute their fixed phone for mobile are twice as likely to be heavy drinkers, Dean suggests that we femto vendors should integrate our technology into electronic beverage coolers :-)

On the other hand...

A new Research & Markets report predicts the femtocell market will reach $434 million in 2009, growing to $9 billion by 2014 - that's the biggest number I've seen associated with femtocells. Rather bizarrely, the flier for the report begins: "Femtocells, are they a secret gathering of female revolutionaries or a miniature mobile phone base station? Probably the latter, but it is intriguing to think about the former". There's also some out-of-date speculation about Google rolling out a femtocell network in the US with its 700 MHz spectrum (which, of course, it has now admitted it was never serious about trying to win in the first place).

Analysys Mason says femtocells are good for mobile TV

DVB-H trials have shown significant indoor usage, with 36–50% of participants viewing mobile TV mainly at home despite the availability of conventional TVs. The report concludes that 3G femtocells offer an alternative means of delivering mobile TV into the home, allowing MNOs to relieve their macro networks of substantial loads and potentially offer higher quality picture and sound than is possible with outdoor 3G and broadcasting networks.

Will operators get femto pricing wrong?

Telephony Online thinks that operators will mess up the femtocell consumer proposition by making it too complicated. Instead of monthly subscriptions, their advice is for operators to just sell the boxes for a one-time fee.

News from The Bath Conference

This article includes a good write-up from Avren Events' recent Next Generation Networks & Basestations conference in Bath. For example, according to Ubiquisys, "femtos are a problem because they could cause interference with existing nearby cell sites and neighboring femtos". Ubi have been talking a lot recently about the need for "Cognitive Radio" in femtocells, which is really just a fancy name for what other vendors call "Network Listen" - the idea being that the femtocell automatically scans the surrounding radio environment then adjusts the frequency of operation and power output to minimize interference and optimize the link.

Are there already 23 femtocell vendors?

Continuous Computing VP Manish Singh says that his company has "23 active engagements" in the femtocell marketplace. If 23 engagements can be interpreted as 23 femto vendor customers (CCPU writes protocol stacks for femtocells and femto-gateways), then there must be a lot of femto companies still in stealth mode.

RadioFrame announces 2nd generation OmniRadio

RFN says it is planning a second generation of its OmniRadio femto chip, which will add LTE and WiMAX. So the marketing story goes that the chip allows the possibility of upgrading a femtocell in the field from 2G to 3G to 4G, as and when the time comes.

Open or closed access?

Beneath another "mast in your living room" headline, Ubiquisys' Will Franks advocates open access deployment of femtocells, whereas Motorola's Malcolm Latham says closed access is preferable. But wait a minute - aren't these two partners? The difference of views might be down to the fact that the two companies are looking at things from different directions. Open access improves RF performance, which is a primary consideration for Ubiquisys because they build the Access Point. However, the improved performance comes at the cost of a greater signalling load in the core network, which is presumably of some concern to Motorola as they are providing the femto gateway.

Components in Electronics looks at femtocells

This article looks at the opportunity for femtocell component suppliers, including comments from our own Chris Cox.

More UK mobile data uptake

Data traffic is now exceeding voice traffic on T-Mobile UK's network, and is responsible for 22% of ARPU. At the same time, Orange UK unveiled its third Digital Media Index - the latest findings reveal a sharp increase in mobile internet access:

Mobile internet - 35% increase in page impressions

Mobile TV - 87% increase in the total hours viewed

Video downloads doubled in the last year

Single music track downloads - 289,000 tracks downloaded in December 07.

I learned that the BlackBerry device is far superior than ever imagined. I mean absolutely amazing. The companies that were sponsoring the event beyond research in motion had a great plan. Showcase their technology to all those who would listen. And I was one interested in listening. I want to showcase a few of these applications and websites.

I got a chance to hang out with the owner of Pinstack.com. Pinstack is one of the better Blackberry blogs. He is an honest blog that reports the news from the BlackBerry community without all the kicks and giggles. He reports it but does not necessarily comment or give a sign of approval on the sites and applications. He lets the users do so. There is nothing wrong with either approach but everyone has thier preferred choice.

Also in attendance at WES was Crackberry.com. This site is a full fledged site for those who have Blackberries looking for good information and even buying applications and ringtones. Definitely a good daily read.

A brand new site was launched named Blackberryhomepage.com and guys its a great site. Now, it's still new so bare with them. But these guys gave away 5 Blackberry curves. Count them. 1, 2, 3 , 4, 5. They posted a thread in Pinstack and it had over 11,000 replies and views in 5 days. Its a simple site that helps your beginner blackberry user learn what he is doing. I talked to these guys at length and did dinner several times during the week. Rumor has it they have alot more giveaways in store. I will be getting lots of insider information from these guys so stay tuned. If you want a Blackberry device or other things you may deem necessary, I would check this site daily. They are going to be a site to reckon with.

Coming up in the next few weeks you will see posts on software that you must have for your BlackBerry and other smartphones.

May 15 (Bloomberg) -- may waste its No. 1 descry in U.S. mobile-phone sales this year as consumers abandon its handsets for more-advanced models, check out firms IDC and Strategy Analytics said. Motorola's share of the U.S. customer base fell to 25 percent in the first quarter, according to data from IDC.

South Korea's and Samsung Electronics Co. each expanded their apportion to 21 percent, while gained on sales of its iPhone, IDC analyst said. At this pace, the band that created the mobile-phone market 25 years ago and maker of the Razr handset will yield the top spot in the U.S., the only region it leads, before the end of 2008, Llamas said.

Buyers in Europe and Asia already have switched to LG touch-screen phones and devices oblation retainer navigation, leading to a 33 percent slump in Motorola's worldwide phone behind year. ''The U.S., their bread and butter, is not immune anymore to their problems,'' Llamas said in a phone conference from IDC's headquarters in Framingham, Massachusetts. ''Samsung and LG have come out in the groove with great products and received a very good reception from most U.S. carriers.'' In the first quarter of terminal year, Motorola had 37.7 percent of the U.S. market, while Samsung had 16.6 percent and LG had 16.3 percent, , an analyst at Boston-based researcher Strategy Analytics, said in a phone interview.

He said Motorola will presumably misplace its U.S. lead in the second half of 2008. Pressure to Split Under prevail upon from billionaire investor , Motorola Chief Executive Officer said in March that the firm will split off the money-losing phone unit to heart on profitable television set-top boxes, two-way radios and wireless-networking equipment.

The phone has unchaste more than $1.5 billion since the start of 2007. Motorola gained 23 cents to $10.13 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading.

The shares have fallen 37 percent this year, compared with a 4 percent incline in the Standard & Poor's Information Technology Index. Motorola plans to bring out more products in the support half, followed by phones with improved features next year, spokeswoman said in an e-mail. She declined to remark on what the Schaumburg, Illinois-based attendance expects will happen to its U.S. market share.

American consumers were slower to corrupt video and Web phones than users abroad because U.S. carriers often subsidized the more fundamental devices or even made them free with some contracts. Then the multimedia iPhone came along in June and convinced U.S. consumers a phone is importance paying for.

The iPhone costs as much as $499 with a two-year contract. Motorola's Razr 2, which plays music and has a camera, costs $199 with a two-year obligation after rebates, according to AT&T's Web site.

I have been reading about the open handset alliance and collaborative work by 30+ companies using open standards for a new operating system for mobile phones. It caught my attention as I join the chorus and require a company or some entity to spark innovation and accelerate new apps for the phone decks. It's almost here?

From a "Wireless Week" article, "today’s smartphones run on several different operating systems, most of which are based on proprietary technology even though they may be open to a certain extent to developers. On the opposite side of Android’s world has been Apple’s iPhone, which was completely closed until its recent introduction of a software developer’s kit (SDK)."

I cant believe its 2008 and as consumers, we are still relying on the carriers and their "slow to market" approach with developing new consumer friendly products. I completely understand and appreciate the tradeoffs with opening up a mobile platform. The economics become quite unfavorable to the carriers, not to mention the seemingly insurmountable risks of viruses and other "bad actors" with users ability to build new apps for a former "walled garden". Not trivial but as we have seen from the past few years with the web, open standards and access for developers to build great products are required for truly great leaps in product. Carriers actually can become less indentured to OEM manufactures and may actually be able to innovate with Android? According to MediaPost's SearchInsider, "80% of all U.S. mobile Web activity takes place on-deck (inside the carriers' walled garden of content) whereas internationally 80% of activity occurs off-deck."

It seems for the mobile platform to take off (video, community, location based apps, etc), we cant rely solely on developments from the carriers, but instead need to also harness some of the mojo from the likes of Facebook/Google/MySpace where users are interacting and building interesting new products. Combine that with some of the mojo from startups like Slide to build fun and zany new products for the mobile screen and the mojo from opening up platforms and allowing creative juices to flow (think of all that longitude/latitude data that is now available)!

The alliance for the open handset includes companies from the mobile operator industry (KDDISprint, T-mobile, etc), companies from the semi-conductor industry (Broadcom, Nvidia, Marvel, etc), handset manufactures which include the likes of (Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc) and from various software companies including (eBay, LiveWire, Google, SkyPop, etc).

Their efforts are to build out Android, a unified set of code built on an open platform (a la Linux Kernal). "Android™ will deliver a complete set of software for mobile devices: an operating system, middleware and key mobile applications. An early look at the Android Software Development Kit (SDK), is available."

With Google promoting a $10m Android challenge (for new product dev) it is exciting to think about the possibilities. Combine this with T Mobile's launch of the 3G network starting in NYC....things are about to get crazy! I wonder if there will be collaboration to buy spectrum and create a whole new network?

Finally, we all know what will really drive innovation and new product dev is the dollar. According to Juniper Research, "despite the incredible growth forecasted for mobile ad revenue -- over $1 billion in 2008 and $7.6 billion in 2013 -- it's still a drop in the $500 billion global ad bucket." But, its a chicken and the egg. Make the platform compelling and dollars will come.

Management Entscheidungen.

Deutsches Telefon?
Made in Bochum.
Bochum "Eins", Bochum "Zwei", und Bochum "Drei".
Teuer, Mittel, Billig

"Nein"!
"Wollt ihr SonyEricsson"?
"Nein"!
Wollt ihr das IPhone"?
"Nein"!
"Was-wollt-ihr-denn"?!
"Bochum, Bochum, Bochum, Bochum,..."!

Finally, Motorola also realized the power of open source. Moto MAGX is next generation of platform b

Finally, Motorola also realized the power of open source. Moto MAGX is next generation of platform based on Linux. "Moto MAGX will be part of it 61% of handset in next few years" says Christy Wyatt, Vice President, Software Platforms & Ecosystem, Motorola. All this showdown is to make Motorola a primary choice of application developers and get Motorola in center of the mobile space battle.

May 14th 2008, Motodev Summit, held in Bangalore, was by far a great conference attendance in Bangalore. Sheer glitzy stage, music and Hollywood like launch was certainly inspiration of Apple showcase events.

I personally felt that how business model shake down and technical adoption would really help Motorola being a viable option for entrepreneurs in Mobile space. There encouraging support for Java was a sweet in this bustling era of Mobile OS vendors.

During the panel discussions, two major challenges were discussed namely fragmentation and discovery. Fragmentation of choice of platforms and discovery of new and useful applications. Motorola seems to give answer by declaring support for Open OS like Linux and providing the Moto Catalog of applications. Welcoming the Linux on Motorola would be a greeted step by Motorola. This provide enough reasoning to call upon open world and play in their backyard.

Do *NOT* switch to Verizon Wireless unless they're finally ready to let you bring in your own phone. The ones they offer are still crippled versions of whatever you probably saw advertised on TV. Especially the Motorola Razr. It had great potential to be my favorite phone. Now, it's just my latest disappointment. There were tools to fix Verizon's purposeful crippling out there, but Motorola was apparently scared to let mere mortals mess with these and have reserved them for the ham-fisted repair techs alone. Looks like I'll be in the market for an OpenMoko again soon, damn the costs of converting too. I'm tired of getting crippled phones from Verizon.

I hardly use my Nokia E61i for taking pictures as I have a separate digicam for photography, but for others who love taking pictures and videos with their phones ShoZu is a fantastic free application to use!

ShoZu isn't just a Photo & Video uploading software, but it's an application which also lets you stay connected with people through a lot of different features like viewing your friends' "Status Updates" in Facebook, ability to Subscribe to Friends Feeds, read & post in Twitter etc.

Remember that when you add Facebook to ShoZu, it will send an email to you asking if you allow it. So, it won't start working till you validate it.

Check out the list of websites ShoZu works with at the end of this post, and by clicking on the links you'll get to read what features ShoZu offers with each of those websites.

I haven't tried all of them, as there are just too many!

I tried ShoZu out earlier with my Flickr Account and it makes uploading pictures from the phone to the web a breeze. I could also read and reply to comments which was fun. The initial settings take some time, but after that everything is just as simple as a click. :)

One feature which I really liked, but could not try as I don't have a GPS device, was the GPS Tagging. If you have Built-In GPS in your phone or if you have a GPS device connected to your phone, then enabling GPS Tagging in ShoZu will allow it to stamp all your pictures and videos with your Geographical Location Coordinates as you take them (where satallite signals are available). Now that is a really useful feature. No need to remember where the picture was taken as ShoZu does it all for you.

Everytime I took a pic or video, or even if I transferred a video to my phone from the computer, ShoZu gave a prompt asking if I wanted to transfer it to my Youtube or Flickr account. It got a little annoying as I don't always upload my stuff, so I fixed this by going to ShoZu> Options> Go to> Settings> Sending> Sending New Photos and changed the 'Ask Before Sending' option to 'Don't Send'.

For people who are constantly sharing their photos with friends & family through the web, the 'Auto Send' feature is a brilliant thing, as then they won't have to open up the application everytime they want to upload a pic. When ShoZu says it makes uploading as easy as One-Click or Zero-Click, it really means it!

Here are some screenshots of ShoZu in my Nokia E61i

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - With Motorola () in a declining spiral, there’s a young burning question

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - With Motorola () in a declining spiral, there's a young burning question in the $142 billion-a-year wide-ranging cell-phone business: Who will profit most from the collapse of one of its majors? Surprisingly, the answer is not customer base leader Nokia () or No. 2 Samsung Electronics. The real winner, as it turns out, seems to be LG Electronics, a South Korean companionship that had a reputation for turning out well-priced, workable handsets that didn't scream out to be noticed. Now, LG's days as a second-tier actress are over. Shipments of its phones were up 54% in the first three months of 2008, from a year ago.

In the process, LG denticulate its market share up to 8.6%, from 6.4% a year earlier, according to check out firm Strategy Analytics.

That catapulted it into fourth place in the rankings, in advance of Sony Ericsson and within striking distance of once unassailable Motorola. If Motorola can't get its comport oneself together, "LG is poised to overtake the struggling company later this year," says researcher Thomas Kang of Strategy Analytics. No question, LG's immediate ascent has been, to some extent, a affair of luck.

Two of its main rivals, Motorola and Sony Ericsson, have stumbled. Then again, LG has expert a lesson or two from competitors' mistakes. Motorola relied too heavily on its trend-setting, ultra-slim RAZR. LG's biggest hit so far has been Chocolate, a lanky total that resembles a chocolate bar and is equipped with a dial pad that glows red: Some 18 million have been sold worldwide since its start in May, 2006. The company also made a brouhaha in Europe and Asia with its Prada phone, a touch-screen model designed in conjunction with the Italian vogue house.

The pricey handset made its debut in March of last year-three months before the iPhone. The Chocolate's star helped propel its creator, Skott Ahn, to the first-rate job at LG's $11.2 billion handset unit in early 2007. But a substitute of churning out a succession of sequels, as Motorola did with the RAZR, the 50-year-old Ahn has relentlessly prodded his males and females to come up with distinctive new models. To turn up the dial on innovation, he doubled the headcount of designers, to 150, and engineers, to 4,000.

He also launched an annual in-house configuration competition. This year's champ is the Secret, fashioned from sleek yet sturdy carbon fiber and tempered barometer and outfitted with a 5-megapixel camera and software that lets users create their own music videos. It went on sales event in Europe this month, and it's likely to be introduced in the U.S. Says Ahn: "We needed leading performers to build trust in our brand." It's working.

The tawdry new handsets have helped LG raise its profile outside of Korea and North America, which together benefit for nearly half of sales. (Verizon Wireless, with which LG has a close partnership in the U.S., declined to comment.) "Carriers are treating LG with more respect," says Harrison Cho, telecom devices analyst at Mirae Asset Securities in Seoul. So are investors.

LG's house is up 57% this year, making it the best artiste all the world's top five cell-phone makers. Mirae's Cho expects profits from LG's handset question to more than double this year, to just over $2 billion, on the back of a nearly 50% cavort in sales.
