Baby just had his first vet visit today. All I have to say is "buyer beware!". Man, I hope this is just the initial primer treatment to get him healthy. I bought a young one so I could hold off on major medical problems for 10 years. But his initial visit uncovered the following ailments and cooresponding cost. Here I thought I would walk away from a basic $45 check up.
Basic Check up:
$45
Lukemia Test (results came back negative):
$55
Ear mites:
$27 for a swab to look at contents under microscope
$25 for Acarexx medicine to treat the infestation

Ring/Hookworm:
$17 for Strongid-T

URI:
$25 for Clavamox to treat his Upper Respitory Infection

Eye Infection:
$25 for Terramycin

Tried to have a conversation with the Assistant Manager of the Burbank Pet Plaza about the medical testing of their animals and reimbursement for accrued cost. No luck there. I also found out that the owner of Baby's sister called to say they would not be keeping the kitten but also they did not want to return her to the store. What does that tell you?

I feel for these little kitties and am not really sure if I would have not had the same issues if I got a cat from the shelter or an animal rescue. But it makes we wonder what happens to the animals who stay sick at these stores and do not get adopted. I am happy Baby is in a safe home and will be taken care of. But I can't say I didn't wince when I saw my vet bill of $222.50 and I worry that I am in for another costly ride of a sick pet.

I plan to drop by the Burbank Pet Plaza and leave a copy of my bill. I am also going to provide a copy to the person who bought Baby's sister. They should know what I had him tested for and possibly why they may be having problems with their kitten. It sounded like those owners had another cat and the two were not getting along. I have a feeling they are worried the new kitten will get their cat sick.

I hope to find out how the little girl kitten is doing by the end of next week.

This is from the Coach in Chief of Minnesota Hockey- good stuff
Chill Out and Have Fun By Hal Tears

This is from the Coach in Chief of Minnesota Hockey- good stuff

Chill Out and Have Fun By Hal Tearse, Minnesota Hockey Head Coach Mite hockey is about having fun, no more and no less. Ages 5-9 years old is hopefully when the youngsters develop basic skills and develop a love for the game. In recent weeks I have heard several stories of well meaning mite coaches and program administrators that have lost site of perhaps the most important aspect of the game, Having Fun. I will paraphrase a few of these comments as these individuals tell the story better than I can. “I had my boy sign up for mite hockey at age 8. He had just started skating. I was told that because of his age and size he would catch on quickly, so we will put him in our top group. I requested that he be put into the lowest group so that he could learn to skate first. My request was ignored by the “experts in our program”. My sons first year was very demeaning as he could not skate anywhere nearly as well as the other kids in his group. This parent has an extensive background as a player at the college level and referee for many years yet his own experience was ignored when it came to his son. This note arrived in my email last week. “My son has played hockey for three years. Last year he did not have much fun as all we did in our association most of the season was skate. There was very little puck handling and instead of playing cross ice games we played half ice with 10 players per side. There was still little opportunity for most kids to handle the puck. .... In many associations they are getting the message of 31 practice to game ratios but at least in our association the practices were not fun. My son is now 9 and feels that he wants to quit. The pressure to perform is already affecting him and he has not enjoyed the practice sessions. “ While these comments are only part of the story there are a couple common issues. 1) Mite hockey sessions need to include some basic skill instruction and then plenty of fun activities in which to practice those new skills. 2) Players need to be grouped by ability not age, grade or other factor. Yes they will learn fast and some faster than others depending on where they are in their physical development. As they improve players can be regrouped by ability. 3) The coaches/instructors need to be aware that when the players are getting bored it is time to throw away the practice plan and play some 3 on 3 cross ice and have fun. Usually when the kids are lying prone on the ice it is a good sign that they are bored. Take immediate action and yell “Scrimmage”. Then proceed to set up several cross ice games. Mite hockey should not be training camp and mite hockey players need to be kids. Off ice training programs, off season leagues, and specialty skills camps will not accomplish much in the long run. Yes, they may advance some kids somewhat compared to the other kids but eventually it all equalizes as the players mature. The research in Dr. Smoll’s book, Children and Youth in Sport, concludes in chapter six (At What Age Are Children Ready to Compete?, by Michael W. Passer) “The issue of readiness is complicated by the differences that exist in the rate of children’s psychological development and in the kinds of competitive sports environment to which they are exposed. Nevertheless, I recommend that children younger than 7 or 8 be discouraged from participating in organized youth sports. By this age most children have a general motivational readiness for competition and cognitive abilities sufficient for a basic understanding of the competition process. Even so, the competitive emphasis of sport should be phased in gradually as children get older and it is essential that coaches and parents of youth sport participants-especially 7-9 year olds- be made aware of the ways in which children cognitive capacities differ from those of adults. This educational goal should be the key component of coach and parent training programs.” Since there is little evidence that highly structured programs for mite age children have any correlation to the eventual competency of mature athletes, it makes sense to have programs that focus primarily on having fun. That does not mean that basic skills like stopping, starting, and turning should not be taught but only that they be taught in a fashion that is really fun for the kids. Sort of like they are learning while they are playing some sort of activity. Minnesota Hockey to the rescue! Pat Westrum, former collegiate all star and coaching Director for Dist 6 and Apple Valley Hockey Association, has provided us with a great video called “Fun Games on Ice”. It has several non traditional activities that you can use with the 9 and under group. Once you see and experience these games your own imagination will take over and you can create games of your own. The best part is that the kids will love coming to the rink and so will you! The video is available only from your District Coach in Chief. He will have several copies for each hockey association in his district. To locate your District Coach in Chief look at www.minnesotahockey.org and click on coaches and then District Coaching Personnel. We will be distributing free of charge several thousand copies of this DVD. It will also include two presentations for coaches who want to teach skating, one on small area games, and a new feature entitled “If it is going to be, it is up to me”. As we begin a new season let’s all work hard to make sure our youngest skaters, the future of this great game, learn to love it as much as we do. See you at the rink.

While reflecting on the experiences I have had in church I was recently reminded of one church that I went to. Specifically the tithing that happened in the church.

In the year that my wife and I, newly married, attended the church we took a keen interest in making sure that we gave of our earnings to God. Often this almost broke the bank. Lots of time we bought pasta, it is cheap, and ate it for two whole weeks for each dinner. I am not trying to show how 'good' we were but trying to lay a foundation for our irritation. One Sunday we noticed that the tithe from the week before was not much. When we went home and talked about it we realized that out of the approximately 300 people that attended the church there was only about $30 over the number that we gave. At first we figured that we were just on a different two week pay period than most of the members. So the next Sunday we again looked at the tithe. This time the total given was less than what we had given. Over the year this pattern often continued, with a few notable Sundays that were outside of the norm. At the annual meeting the church leadership talked about being about $30,000 over budget because projected giving was that low. We ended up going for almost 2 years. I know from other churches that some business owners wait till the end of the fiscal year and then make one large donation out of the business. Again this did not seem to happen. For a while I even worked as a carpenter and built houses for a few of our members. I built mansions for these people. They had no problem spending $100,000 on a copper roof. But giving to the church did not seem in their budget.

I know that many of you may be rushing to the comment field to tell me that I am not responsible for others actions just for my own. You want to tell me that my faithfulness will be rewarded. What I learned out of the whole experience was the effect of a community mindset. It seemed that the community in general was withholding funds. They did not see that it was necessary to give, because someone else would do it. In a class of mine a pastor talked about his mega-church and how hey continually decreased there budget and each year giving went down too. They decreased the budget because the giving was not keeping up and then the giving underperformed.

The intent of this is to highlight the need to give. We are required to give our first fruits to God. God was happier with a woman who gave a mite than a man who gave lots. How is your giving? Do you measure up in faithful giving?

I suppose now is time for my confession. Currently we are sporadic tithers. We tithe when it is convenient. Sometimes I go for a while without tithing. As much as this is a challenge to you this is a challenge to me. So together lets do better.

Nobody likes to bear disturbing news. Nobody really likes talking about disturbing news either-well

Nobody likes to bear disturbing news. Nobody really likes talking about disturbing news either-well-that is unless it is comfortably distant from oneself. This is a common problem when it concerns our health. Sometimes we need to share knowledge that can keep the health of our local and global community a top priority.

This site is aiming to do just that on a topic that is under-represented in the public realm. In fact, there is more confusion and incorrect diagnosis, and thusly increased anxiety over what could be a simple issue. I am talking about a tiny little parasite that is just large enough to be visible to most naked eyes. These parasites are called Harvest Mites or are alternatively known as "chiggers". They cause us trouble because they are largely undetected initially or misinterpreted by the uneducated masses, and some educated professionals alike and are spread unwittingly.

What are HM?

Originally found in warm temperate locations, HM are documented in Tennessee and California. Due to air travel and general public interaction, however, HM that have made a home on their human most's skin (hairfollicle) can be easily transferred to other humans through touch or close proximity and have found many other temperate locations quite suitable.

HM are most prevalent in the Fall and Spring and prefer to reside on grasses next to ocean or marshes hoping for a small animal to walk by and brush up against.

Before you get too squeamish, you need to understand that this is the nature of being a hospitable host. Humans simply have what HM need to survive and they are not picky-any warm blooded mammal will do. HM is not exclusive to social or economically challenged individuals, nor is it an exclusively STD, it is equally contractable by everyone of all shapes and sizes however, the expression of the infestation ranges in different types of people (which you will learn in the DIAGNOSTIC section)

Your best bet for prevention is the ability to detect the signs of HM infestation (which show up only after a couple days) and the ability to protect the skin from potential infestation by tuning your skin health practice with the following simple PREVENTION list below.

BEFORE we further discuss what HM are about, let us clear our minds and look at what HM are NOT:

Scabies

Dust mites

Bed Bugs

Folliculitis

Pimples

(source : New Scientist).
