Here's a common misspelling from the blog for Yahoo! Live. Or is it Y! Live? Or possibly Y!Live? I can't tell, and it looks like Yahoo! doesn't care since the product name appears all three ways on the site. But I digress.

Even if the writer can't spell the product's name correctly (though it appears that any spelling is acceptable), he or she can at least spell accommodate correctly. It can accommodate two C's and two M's.

This teaser on the home page of Yahoo! Shine’s Entertainment section misplaces an apostrophe.

This teaser on the home page of Yahoo! Shine's Entertainment section misplaces an apostrophe. Just ask any fan of Li'l Abner where it should go:

Not a biggie, even to a nitpicker like myself. A greater problem is that the sentence implies that Ms. Parton believes that Ms. Spears and Ms. Lohan are guilty of some shenanigans that are beyond their self-control. In fact, Ms. Parton implies just the opposite in the actual article, shown here:

And while you're reading, take note of the misspelled Theater. Though that spelling is preferred in the US, the actual name of the performance palace is Greek Theatre -- and it's spelled correctly in the article that this one borrows so heavily from. Why would a writer make this arbitrary (and incorrect) change. And has it happened before?

While I'm picking nits, could you please add a period to the end of the last sentence? Thank you.

The writer of this sentence from a blog on Yahoo! omg! gets it wrong:

Of course, it's a common error. And using its when you mean it is also appears frequently on the Web. As evidence, consider this on Yahoo!'s front page today:

Writing correctly presents its own special challenges, but it's not that difficult to use the correct word. It's easy: A pronoun doesn't have an apostrophe, even possessive pronouns like its and hers. And a contraction needs an apostrophe.

But no, it's actually a case of a missing hyphen and a balloon that looked like Mr. D. Vader. If punctuated correctly, the sentence would include a Darth Vader-shaped balloon.

The crossed-eyed vulture is another matter. The hyphen is correct, but crossed-eyed isn't. It should be cross-eyed.

Earlier today "Condensed Soup" on Yahoo! TV gleefully reported that Wendy Williams butchered the pronunciation of actor Shia LaBeouf's name. But pronouncing his name can't be any easier than spelling it:

The writer of "Reality Rocks," a Yahoo! Music blog, has found a new victim for her torturous misspelling of names. Tyce Diorio, choreographer on "So You Think You Can Dance," has an unusual name. So unusual, in fact, that the careful writer would google it before committing it to the blogosphere. Instead, the author chose to misspell it twice in a single paragraph (albeit a long, densely packed paragraph):

On a more encouraging note, the writer misspelled Chelsie's name just once in the entire blog entry!

It turns out: Kind of, but not quite.

Since the launch of the new search engine, Cuil.com, (pronounced Cool), on Sunday, it's been in the news. Well, the nonmainstream news I heed, anyway. One such story was digging deep to discern the truthfulness (or lack thereof) of the site's claim that cuil is an Irish word that means knowledge.

The results are in: It kind of means that. The word (coll, with a genitive cuill) actually means hazel; it's associated with wisdom/knowledge in Celtic mythology. This culled from the comments on the above post; the commenter wrote succinctly about it here. So the search engine creators spelled their site wrong, too, apparently.

This is all a side note to whether the search engine actually leads a user to knowledge. From what I've heard so far, it's not scoring too well in that category. When I tried it, I got both tangential results and entirely unrelated results; some results were not even in English. I did not get any directly related results.

Numerous and egregious spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors can produce a train wreck of text and derail readers. Take this article from Yahoo! Shine, for example:

Could there be more errors? Possibly. My pen ran out of red ink as I was circling the slip-ups. Here are the ones I noted:

There's a hyphen missing from health-conscious state.

The plural of yogis doesn't need an apostrophe.

Where's the comma after etc.?

There's a missing hyphen before the misspelled laden. It should be trans-fat-laden.

Why capitalize the when referring to the Terminator?

The word bucks is redundant after an amount preceded by a dollar sign

BBC News needs a few capital letters.

The word this doesn't need a capital letter.

Did you find others that I missed?

I'm happy to report that two of the three errors in this Yahoo! Shine snippet have been corrected:

The subject and verb now agree in the first sentence. Happened is spelled as it should be. The only thing missing is the apostrophe in '90s. Not bad.

The writer of this excerpt from Yahoo! Shine borrows the actress' words from "In Case You Didn't Know," but took the liberty of altering her name:

Small-chested women are quite different from women who are small and chested, a fact that is apparently lost by the writer of this piece on Yahoo! Shine. A simple hyphen would fix the problem:

But the misspelling of the first and last name of actress Keira Knightley is another matter. Next time, I suggest the author google the actress.

If you're in doubt about the spelling of a word, look it up! That's my advice to the writer of this excerpt from Yahoo! Shine:

Although forego is a variant of forgo, I wish the writer had used the latter. Foregoing can mean "previous or preceding." I think forgoing, which means "abstaining from," would have been a better choice. As for au naturale, it's simply a misspelling of au naturel.

Dear Chace,

Dear Chace,

It's time you gave up this pretentious moniker and bent to the will of the media. Face it, son. Your name is just too hard for some people to spell. For the fourth time in as many weeks, you've appeared on the Yahoo! front page (at least I think it's you):

I think the good folks at Yahoo! are trying to send you a message, albeit a subtle one: You want front page coverage, then spell your name the way we tell you to! If it was good enough for Dr. Chase Meridien in "Batman Forever" and Chase Matthews in "Zoey 101," it should be good enough for you. And don't forget Chevy Chase. The comedian and that place in Maryland.

Give it up. You can't win.

The correct word is oftentimes or even the quaint ofttimes. But as two words, it just doesn't make sense, as illustrated by this excerpt from Yahoo! Shine:

The shorter, less formal often might have been a better choice. As for "go dutch," the dictionaries I use prefer "go Dutch" -- but maybe that's too formal for the Internet.
