Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki says the Islamic Republic plays a vital role in settling crises in the Middle East region.

"Iran enjoys a significant geopolitical position in the region and the world," Mottaki said in a meeting with his Malaysian counterpart, Rais Yatim, in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 11th Session of the Group of Eight Islamic Developing Countries' Council of Foreign Ministers.

Yatim called for expansion of Tehran-Kuala Lumpur relations and cooperation in all fields.

The Iranian and Malaysian ministers exchanged views on avenues for bolstering bilateral trade and economic cooperation and key regional and international developments.

The 11th Session of the D-8 Council of Ministers opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday with the aim of discussing the agenda for the 6th D-8 Heads of Government Summit, due to open on July 8. The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will participate in the D-8 summit.

Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey are member states of the D-8. They are also members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

D-8 was set up in 1997 as an economic alliance with the aim of enhancing the position of Muslim developing countries in the global economy through adoption of measures toward diversification of their economies and creation of new opportunities for increased trade exchanges among them.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has upped the ante in his $2.5 million defamation suit against the Liberals, claiming an additional $1 million for "misappropriation of personality."

The potential blow to the Liberals' already depleted coffers came to light Wednesday as part of the 2007 annual financial statements filed by all federal political parties with Elections Canada.

The statements underscore just how little the Grits can afford to lose such a costly lawsuit: Harper's Conservatives vacuumed up donations last year at almost four times the rate of the cash-strapped Liberals, drawing on a pool of donors almost five times larger.

Harper launched his $2.5-million lawsuit against the Liberal party last March, after Grit officials refused to apologize for accusations that the prime minister knew about a "Conservative bribery" attempt in the Cadman affair.

On the Warrior’s Path connects the martial arts with the larger perspective of developing body, spirit, and awareness, and merges subtle philosophies with no-holds-barred competition, Nietzsche with Bruce Lee, radical Taoism and Buddhism with the Star Wars Trilogy, traditional martial arts with basketball and American Indian culture. At the center of all these phenomena is the warrior. Though this archetype seems to manifest contradictory values, Daniele Bolelli describes the heart of this tension: how the training of martial technique leads to a renunciation of violence, and how overcoming fear leads to a unique freedom. On the Warrior’s Path brings fresh insights to why martial arts remains an enduring and widespread art and discipline. This second edition includes two new chapters that focus on spirituality in the martial arts and the author’s personal journey in the field.

George Washington—one of his many aliases—starts out as the classic trickster figure, a blend of con artist, deep thinker, and willing object of white women’s sexual fantasies. Fed up with life in racist America, he leaves the rural South for Denmark on a curious quest, determined to discover if there is “any mother fucker in this despiteful world who ever told himself the truth.” In Denmark he spends his days bantering with fellow black expatriates and his nights bedding a series of white women who project their desires on him. Inevitably, these worlds collide, with Washington, aka Anthony Miller, aka Paul Winthrop, aka Mr. Jiveass Nigger, increasingly alienated in a world of opportunists. A return to America after his self-imposed exile promises transformation, but is Washington too far gone?

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki says the Israeli regime is not in a position to embark on another 'adventure' in the region.

"We do not see the Israeli regime in a position to commit a new act of adventurism by attacking Iran, considering that it is still suffering from the consequences of its heavy defeat during its 33-day aggression against Lebanon two years ago. Another defeat of the Israeli regime will be further proof of its illegitimacy," Mottaki told reporters in a joint press conference with his Pakistani counterpart Syed Naveed Qamar after the opening ceremony of the 17th session of the Joint Iran-Pakistan Economic Commission in Tehran Sunday.

"Iran's mission to the UN will file documents and statements by the Zionist regime's authorities because their speeches at various times are a clear admission of the regime's aggressive attitude, its moves against international regulations and its possession of nuclear weapons," he said.

He pointed to the package of incentives prepared by the six main powers on Iran's nuclear case, saying, "Iran is studying the 5+1Group's proposed package carefully and in a constructive spirit. The respectful attitude of the group's representatives prepared the ground for Iran's decision to study the package."

On June 14, the EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana presented a package of incentives to the Iranian Foreign Minister. The package was drawn up by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (5+1 Group) and requires Iran to renounce its right to uranium enrichment in exchange for a set of political, economic and security incentives.

Iranian officials insist that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the Islamic Republic is entitled to acquire nuclear technology for electricity generation and peaceful applications in such important areas as medicine, agriculture and manufacturing.

Iran's top diplomatic official added that the G5+1 had taken a constructive view of Tehran's proposed package, which was submitted to a number of countries and international organizations. The package is aimed at tackling a range of issues the world is facing in connection with terrorism, nuclear proliferation, drug trafficking and other criminal activities that threaten peace and security across the world.

He recommended the Group of Eight industrialized countries should take a constructive stance on Iran based on the new circumstances and avoid politically-motivated measures. "This will be beneficial to all."

In a statement issued on Friday, the Group of Eight urged Iran to accept the West's new incentive package and suspend its uranium enrichment program.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in Hanoi on June 28, wrapping up his official visit to the US at the invitation of President George W. Bush.

The Vietnamese government leader’s visit contributed to fostering bilateral ties between Vietnam and the US , opening up opportunities for cooperation in economics, trade, investment, education, science, technology and environment between the two countries.

The PM’s visit drew particular attention from the US public and international media agencies, especially his talks with President Bush at the White House.

The results of the talks not only helped strengthen and deepen the Vietnam-US relations but also helped push up economic, trade and investment cooperation which are considered as a foundation for the two sides to strengthen bilateral ties in many areas for mutual benefit.

The two sides announced that they will initiate negotiations toward a Bilateral Investment Treaty, signaling their commitment to fair, non-discriminatory and transparent treatment of foreign investment.

President Bush affirmed that the US is seriously reviewing Vietnam ’s request to be designated as a beneficiary of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) program and acknowledged the Southeast Asian nation’s request to be accorded Market Economy Status.

If what Vietnam has requested is implemented, both Vietnamese and US businesses will be beneficiaries.

One of the important goals of the PM’s visit is to enhance education cooperation with the US , a nation with the most advanced education system in the world.

Various forums and seminars on education were organised in Washington D.C and Houston, which the PM visited. PM Dung and President Bush agreed to set up an Education Task Force that will jointly study and put forth effective measures to enhance Vietnam-US education cooperation.

The US Department of Education and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the area.

The US Government decided to establish a new committee to help Vietnam study and deal with climate change and rising sea level. It will further assist Vietnam in prevention of HIV/AIDS, mine sweeping, detoxification of dioxin-contaminated areas, implementation of health care projects and search for the Vietnamese missing during the war.

During his meeting with the US ’s high-ranking officials, including the leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives and the ministers of the Departments of Defence and Treasury, the PM received positive signals for acceleration of bilateral ties in all areas, particularly in economics, trade, investment and education.

The results of the PM’s visit mark a new step forward in bilateral relations with the motto: For interest of both peoples, for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Usher: Yeah, must have been somethin' I ate

Deacon: Do you remember what it was?

Usher: I think it was the latest sermon served up by the pastor. He got together with some marketing people to address the homeless thing in the community and then fed it to us.

Deacon: Fed you what?

Usher: Oh, you know - let's all do something for the homeless this week. He put together some program so the congregation could go give 'em some food, buy 'em a blanket and hand 'em a tract.

Deacon: And what's wrong with that?

Usher: Nothin' I guess, next week is diversity week, following is prison week, then divorce week, short-term missions week, singles week, VBC week...... It's McChurch Deak, McChurch.. Come and get your limited time offer to minister - then we'll all go to Starbucks and drink lattes after.

It was announced yesterday that London will be hosting it's very own annual international Six-Day cycle race and cycling festival after receiving backing from Prime Minister Gordon Brown. According to CyclingWeekly.com:

Mr Brown also praised the London Borough of Newham, adjacent to the Olympic 2012 site - for hosting the festival. As well as seeing the pro stars of the winter six-day circuit in action on a portable timber track already in use at Continental Sixes, the festival will provide an opportunity for the public and local communities to learn to ride an indoor track.

I bet the team at the Manchester Vedlodrome can't be too happy about this!

by Rev. Djalòki(*)

The Concept of Interfaith

In the process of brainstorming on a definition of the concept of Interfaith, members of A World Alliance of Interfaith Clergy (http://www.worldinterfaithclergy.org) and of the New Seminary (http://www.newseminary.org) came up with this temporary definition (communicated by Rev. Norman Wolfe):

Interfaith is a spiritual path to the Divine through seeing and understanding the deeper commonality of all spiritual paths and appreciating the unique contribution each has made. It is through this that we hope to transcend any specific form and gain a direct and rich experience of the Divine that we can bring into our daily living.

I believe this definition gives a good idea of the concept of Interfaith. In the course of the brainstorming however, the short version above evolved to the formulation below, and is still in progress in order to respect and incorporate as many different perspectives and sensibilities as possible:

Interfaith recognizes that the Divine expresses itself through all that inhabits this planet and is experienced in the diversity of their rituals, liturgy and practices. Interfaith is a spiritual path to the Divine of seeing, understanding and experiencing the deeper commonality of all spiritual paths and appreciating the unique contributions each makes to spiritual development. It is by drawing from the richness of rituals and practices of many faiths that we strive to transcend any specific path and gain a rich and direct experience of the Divine, which we can then bring into our daily living.

Three Major Approaches of Interfaith

Interfaith activities, statements or opinions are usually based on one or a combination of the three following approaches (it should be noted that this description is just an attempt of the author to modelize and present the Interfaith approach; it has not been widely shared so far and, as such, has not yet been the object of a wide consensus):

1- Inclusivism: religious tolerance and outreach rooted in a specific religion

This is the approach of the adepts of a specific religion who recognize the validity and truth of other religions for other people. Inclusivist (or Interfaith) groups and movements have been in existence in most of the religions of the world since their inception. It has often traditionally been promoted by the mystics of these religions, and now by more and more religious leaders of all faiths. Many people consider this approach as a prerequisite for world peace.

2- Pluralism: interstitial space and interface between different religions

This approach recognizes the riches and the uniqueness of every religion and spiritual path. It considers them as various pointers to a common objective, which is the union between the human and the Divine. It does not favor any particular religion over the others and focuses on the common ground between them as a foundation to access their potential of complementarity. Some people see it as an extension of the interdenominational and oecumenical approaches; others see it as a postmodernist approach of spirituality.

3- Spirituality beyond religious formal structures

In this approach, the spiritual quest seeks to transcend the socio-cultural, political, historical and organizational aspects of religions. In a sense, it focuses more on the "inter" than on the "faith" of Interfaith. The term Interspirituality is also used for this approach. It usually embraces a holistic body-mind-spirit-universe model and draws from various forms of teaching: religious, mystic, scientific (theoretical and empirical), philosophical, etc. Integral spirituality, which is the Integral Approach (developed by Ken Wilber) applied to spirituality, is an example of this approach of Interfaith.

There are many Interfaith organizations, seminaries and churches in the world today. Many of them are accessible on the Internet (I suggest you search the Web for Interfaith Organization, Interfaith Seminary, Interfaith Church and Interfaith Temple).

The Interfaith Minister

Although the Interfaith approach is not a religion, it is a legally recognized religious denomination in some countries, including the U.S.A. As a result, Interfaith seminaries, temples and churches that are legally registered in the U.S.A. as ordaining organizations can ordain ministers who are entitled to the same legal privileges and responsibilities as ministers of established and recognized religions in that country. Basically, they can legally perform baptisms, weddings and funerals, offer spiritual counseling and perform the usual tasks attributed to ministers in congregations and organizations, including worship services and various rituals as well as chaplaincy. As other ministers in the U.S.A., Interfaith ministers bear the title of Reverend.

Anyone can become an Interfaith minister, with no discrimination based on gender, race, socio-economic status, sexual orientation or religion.

The activities of many Interfaith ministers can be described through the lenses of the three approaches of Interfaith mentioned earlier.

1- "Religious" Interfaith ministers operate from the perspective of a specific religion. Some of them are ordained in their own religion and congregation as well. They promote religious tolerance and inclusivism in their communities.

2- "Pluralist" Interfaith ministers typically serve multicultural-multireligious communities, allowing people of different religions to live and practice their faith, not only side by side, but together in dynamic and interactive ways. There is a growing interest in hiring Interfaith ministers as chaplains in hospitals, nursing homes, the army and in humanitarian actions after large scale disasters involving people of different backgrounds.

3- "Interfaith Ministers of the Third Kind" (in lack of a better terminology) serve as facilitators, mentors and companions for people and groups who, while nurturing a deep reverence for the religions of the world, want to go beyond the conventions of religion in quest of global holistic encompassing paradigms and consciousness.

Interfaith ministers often combine various aspects of these three models in their activities.

In addition to their traditional role as ministers to individuals and communities, I also believe that Interfaith Ministers have the potential to become global spiritual leaders for humanity as a whole, along with others acting as facilitators and/or leaders in global healing, spiritual growth and the conscious evolution of our species.

(*) Reverend Djalòki, also known as Jean Luc Dessables, is an ordained Interfaith minister affiliated to the Interfaith Temple of the New Seminary (www.newseminary.org). His practice includes Paradigm Expansion Coaching (combining elements of Life Coaching, Spiritual Counseling and Shamanic teachings), cross-cultural consulting, and international lectures and workshops on the connections between religions (Eastern and Western), Shamanism (including 21st Century Vodou) and advanced science (of consciousness and of matter).

Djalòki is also co-founder of the "N a Sonje" Foundation (http://nasonje.blogspot.com), which aims at healing the historical wounds between the peoples of Africa, Europe and the Americas. He is an associate member of DOA/BN (www.haititravels.org, transformational cultural tourism in Ayiti), and an Interactive Imagery Guide.

His intention is to help create a sustainable multicultural global society showing reverence for the diversity of life and valuing inclusive excellence among people and institutions. He believes that the time has come for the global shift of human consciousness, prophesied by many ancient people, that may mark a major leap of evolution for humanity.

Djalòki is a citizen of the world and of Ayiti (Kreyòl name of Haiti); he lives in Port-au-Prince, Ayiti. He speaks French, Ayitian Kreyòl, English and Spanish.

Hanoi – Finance Minister Vu Van Ninh said that Vietnam will temporarily stop issuing international bonds until favourable conditions come along.

In addition, the Government also decided to reduce bonds-funded investment by 25 percent, the minister added.

In the first issuance of bonds on the international market at the end of 2005, the Vietnamese Government bonds attracted 255 investors with buying orders amounting to 4.5 billion USD against the total issued value of 750 million USD.

At the June 19 online forum with international investors, Minister Ninh said the issuance of bonds on the international market in addition to mobilizing more resources for national development, aims to help Vietnamese businesses get access to new capital source.

Therefore, in June 2007, the Government adopted a resolution to issue international bonds worth 1 billion USD with the maturities of 15-20 years to finance projects by the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, the Vietnam National Shipping Lines, the Song Da Construction Corporation and the Vietnam Machinery Erection Corporation.

However, the current situation is not suitable for the issuance.

The minister said that the interest rate of Government bonds will be reviewed in the context of rising banking interest rates in order to be more attractive to investors.

Calling the California high court’s decision justified, the Orange County Register, probably

Calling the California high court's decision justified, the Orange County Register, probably the state's largest conservative newspaper, in its lead editorial on Sunday (June 22,2008), succinctly and articulately endorsed gay marriage. Money quote:

Our preference would be for the government not to be involved in marriage, the most fundamental of institutions in a civil society. Why two people who want to be married should be required to get a license from the state is something of a mystery. Marriage existed long before the California or U.S. governments came into being and will continue long after they have been consigned to history. Whether a marriage is valid should be up to the people involved and the churches, synagogues, mosques or other religious institutions that choose to perform them or not.

As a practical matter, however, the government has so entwined itself into our daily lives that state recognition is important. Filing taxes as a married couple or as individuals makes a difference, as does the ability to own real estate, make end-of-life decisions or adopt children. Considering all this and the importance of equality before the law, the high court's decision was justified.

It is argued that allowing same-sex marriage will infringe on the religious freedom of people who have a religiously based objection to it. It is hard to see the validity. Church and state are correctly separate in this country, and the fact that the state recognizes a union as a marriage doesn't mean that a religious person or institution has to recognize it or approve of it. It's hard to imagine a minister, rabbi or imam who objects to same-sex marriages being forced to perform one, and we would be the first to object if anybody tried it.

We'll see what the mood of the California electorate is in November, when citizens will vote on whether to add language to the California constitution once again banning gay marriage in the state, but right now things are looking pretty good for the equal treatment of gays under the law. To read the full editorial, here's the link: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/marriage-state-sex-2073700-marriages-people
