Well, I know that this has the effect of breaking links... and this sucks. So, I'm leaving up the old site at: fourspaces.com/blog for a while until I can figure out what I'm going to do to make sure that existing links redirect. This is mainly to protect the links to the FeatherDB information. Perhaps I'll split that out as a main project in the future (Embeddable Document DB for Java?) Maybe we'll rename it "Eddy" :)

Perhaps now I'll start writing more often about what is happening. This was also precipitated by the lack of spam-fighting ability in my custom written blog engine that I was running. I'm also starting to get tired of using Java for web-apps in general, so I feel less of a need to dogfood my own frameworks.

So, we'll see how it goes.

New blog, new blog, what will I feed you?

I should probably first explain the name- the phrase comes from the Decemberists' song "Sons and Daughters" from The Crane Wife. Like so many Decemberists songs, it does a great job of describing my romantic ideals, in this case, of a dreamy insurrection.

When we arrive,
sons and daughters,
we'll make our homes on the water,
we'll build our walls aluminum,
we'll fill our lives with cinnamon now.

These currents pull us 'cross the border,
steady your boats,
arms to shoulder.
'Till tides are pulled,
hold our grounds,
making this cold harbor now home.

Take up your arms,
sons and daughters.
We will arise from the bunkers.
By land, by sea, by dirigible
We'll leave our tracks untraceable now.

When arrive,
sons and daughters,
we'll make our lives on the water,
we'll build our walls aluminum,
we'll fill our mouths with cinnamon.

Here all the bombs fade away.

So good, so good. Who wants to go to the bunkers with me?

Here is the Dan Zen board interface from 1998 (Read about it on this Blog). All this talk of Social Networks reminded me of my Social link up to left. This was really my blog announcing the latest things on Dan Zen through one of my "barnacles" Eg Orna. The barnacles were all anagrams of their colors.

More to the point is that just this corner of the site shows five social networks and games - they are still active and some started in 1996. To date there are a couple dozen social games on Dan Zen averaging about two per year over twelve years. They can be seen thought the Social Category at the right of the blog - please note there are two pages with the second page being accessible from the top.

The five social games shown in the corner are (Moustache Mysteries is a game for individuals):

Spirogram where you send and receive encoded messages.

Salamander where you go into a park with a bunch of others and try and find a spy called the Salamander based on clues.

Opartica where you can share portfolios or individual op art creations.

Hip Cats, an all out social network with accounts; ratings of other hip cats; dating; friending; indication of favorite movies, books, and music; top ten hip cats newsletter; a buzz section with user created music, book, movie and Website reviews, happenings, protests, koans, radical ideas, first times and translations that turned your words into certain hip moods like psychedelic, beatnik, goth, urban and surf; messages; ratings on products; tie-ins to affiliate Amazon purchasing; templated scenes for organizations to host a Hip Cats site complete with stats, word filtering, self modifying drop outs; all programmed in DHTML within months from its launch.

Password Paradox is another self modifying social game where the passwords you guess right are actually the passwords that others have already guessed.

Another thing I noticed recently was the Loves You tag on the top of the flickr logo (replacing the alpha or beta that once was there helping bring in the age of Web 2.0 gizmos). Dan Zen used to put We Love You at the bottom of a number of pages often after introduction and help pages. Examples are below. You can still find them on Hip Cats and other pages. Of course we are all welcome to love! It was really nice of flickr ;-)

One of my referring links came from http://translate.google.fr/ which means I got translated into French. Man, I sound really good in French.

I normally don't begin sentences with 'certes' but I like it.

The sidebar also becomes far more amusing. Plattie, alas, has no French equivalent (though it's translating her as well - she has a trou in her dent, alas - no, wait, it's J. who does). Smart Bitches Who Love Trashy Books (hmm, I seem to have mistranscribed the site name) becomes 'Smart chiennes qui trashy amour des livres' which is a nice try as French clearly doesn't get 'trashy' though given that their movies always seem to involve prostitutes, I am not sure about this.

Anyway, French is classier, but I lose track of the the diacritics.

Welcome, Web traveler, to theMaykazine,

Welcome, Web traveler, to theMaykazine,

Consider this Wordpress an indefinite holding cell until the actual time comes to launch the long-awaited tM domain. I've been itching to write regularly for over a year, holding off solely so that tM could get a more monumental debut: "Mayka returns to blogging!" Turns out I couldn't hold out for much longer than a year, though. A number of factors have contributed to today's seemingly arbitrary declaration of recommitting to blogging.

First of all, I'm going on vacation this week. I'm flying out to New York, where I hope to be overwhelmed with sensory overload. I go on vacations to get away from everyday scenery, and my eyes have been aching for something totally out of the ordinary to severely offend or inspire me.

Second, I'm unemployed. My last day of work was about 2.5 weeks ago, and though I have my melancholy moments of feeling like I'm floating through space, all this free time gives me more things to notice, and thus more things to share with the rest of the world.

Lastly, Schwertlilie has been working on the design of tM for just over a year now, and though she's learning great things that take time to learn and even more time to apply to in the creation of a new site, my inner child can't help but be impatient.

So that all brings us here, with me in my apartment taking a break from simultaneously Websurfing, resume-polishing, and Photoshopping, to finally saying writing posting that I can't wait anymore. It's not that I think there is a public that misses me. It's that there are YouTube videos to be seen and blogs to be read that I can no longer handle sharing via the one-off e-mails and IMs I've been sending out lately. It's easier to broadcast, and when you're born with a healthy dose of narcissism, it's actually more fun.

I don't intend for this thing to be a proprietary vehicle. I have no delusions about gaining Julia Allison notoriety, beating Engadget to the punch, or being perceived as a credible expert on anything. If you're here now, you're probably just a part of my existing social circle. If you're here and you don't know how to pronounce my name, there is no fancy description for the non-phenomenon of landing on a person's blog. If you find yourself coming back here, you're probably just interested in the passive voyeuristic opportunities provided by "the blogosphere." Whatever your path, if you like to read about 20-something ABC girls who like dancing, writing, surfing the Net, hyphy music, and Puma sneakers, I look forward to your browser hits.

Have a happy Monday, and I promise (to myself, basically) that I won't bore you with writing like this in the future. I hate to end with a Kanye West song, because by no means do I think he shits gold, but I'm just feelin' the title of the song right now (I hate the song, itself.). So please excuse the cheese, but I just have to do this: Welcome to the Good Life.

Hello chicas and chicos.

Hello chicas and chicos.

You may have noticed that I've been absent. I am working my bad ass off at two jobs securing spending money for my trip next weekend to Music City, USA itself, Nashville TN (and thence to Dollywood!!) and haven't even had a chance to apologize for my absence.

I'll be back on Thursday, May 22nd with another music memoir.

Until then, here are two songs called "Tennessee" and two songs called "Nashville." I was unable to find a song called "Pigeon Forge" or "Gatlinburg" (where Dollywood is located), much to my own chagrin:

1. "Tennessee" by Silver Jews, possibly the best song about Tennessee ever (We're off to the land of club soda unbridled / We're off to the land of hot, middle-aged women):

[audio http://badassmusicblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/06-tennessee.mp3]
Download Tennessee

2. "Nashville" by the Indigo Girls, a lovely song from their 1992 album Rites of Passage, which actually reminds me a lot of my time in Los Angeles, weirdly ( I came to you with a half-open heart dreams upon my back illusions of a brand-new start / Nashville can't I carry the load / Is it my fault I can't reap what I sow? / Nashville did you give me half a chance / with your southern style and your hidden dance?)

[audio http://badassmusicblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/01-nashville.mp3]
Download Indigo Girls's Nashville

3. The classic "Tennessee" by Arrested Development. Oh yeah. I went there. And also, a cover by New Found Glory from a compilation called Punk Goes Crunk. While I'm not really sure you could classify New Found Glory as "punk" or Arrested Development as "crunk," I kind of dig the cover, even if the vocals are, you know, a bit whiny.

Arrested Development:
[audio http://badassmusicblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/02-tennessee.mp3]

New Found Glory:
[audio http://badassmusicblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/03-tennessee-arrested-development-cover.mp3]

4. Finally, one of the guiltiest of my guilty feminist pleasures, Liz Phair, applying her sexy, breathy vocals to her song "Nashville" from Whip Smart (They don't know what they like so much about it / They just go for any shiny old bauble, and nobody sparkles like you/ But I can't imagine it in better terms/ Then naked, half-awake, about to shave and go to work). It doesn't have a lot to do with the city itself, but goodness is it lovely:

One of the most important things about academic scholarship is the need to keep reaching out, to keep asking yourself why and how you can improve. Without this inquisitiveness, without this ambition, knowledge becomes static as we become too self-satisfied (or just too indolent) to reach beyond the bounds of what is perceived as comfortable, as the norm. Regardless of where one stands in academia, in society, in life, sitting there and giving up, succumbing to the status quo, is to submit oneself to the entropy and mass ennui that plague so many people. Mediocrity in a sense is very unrelative: it is the self-indulgent desire to settle for less.

So don't. Don't settle for less. Push yourself to the limits of what you can do, discard old familar habits, go on a limb and experiment. Take with you efficiacy, resourcefulness, moral justice, and a yen for more. Sometimes you'll fail, sometimes you'll find something so wonderful you would have never thought of if you didn't push yourself so hard. You won't ever know if you don't try, and in trying you might find yourself redefined.

Another week, another lack of posts. I have to ask myself…what the hell is that about? It

Another week, another lack of posts. I have to ask myself...what the hell is that about? It's not like I am not at the computer. Of course I have a decent sized video project which is eating up plenty of time but still it's not like it's all I'm doing. I have just migrated to a mac just before I started this blog and it's really opened options that weren't available when I was on my slowly dying Dell PC. Do I have to even mentioned that my DVD player is dying so the mac is like my entertainment system? The line between all my entertainment sources is blurring. Not complaining mind you just noticing.

(Okay I am complaining alittle bit..stupid dvd player..)

I am still figuring out the internet vs Local/ "Clued vs Clueless" thing. It is very similar to that letter writing conundrum. (Yes I used to write letters.)Do you try to do the catch up thing or do you just throw 'em into the moment? As I wrote the last sentence I think I am siding with the latter. Just with a side order of the former. I have been in the tributaries of the mainstream for way too long to pretend I came across some things yesterday.

So I am just going to blow off all my big plans and just post some links to the things I've been grooving on these days. With the promise to myself I'll get back to all these things I've been digging for years. I am always looking for new things to blow my mind.

From Boing Boing, the well established blog that I finally got into, is this link to Gangstagrass. A free album that mashes up hip-hop with bluegrass to great effect. I am not a big rap fan though I like Anticon, Deltron 3030 and geek stuff like McChris. I tell myself I should check out stuff like Aesop Rock but I am lazy. And my bluegrass tastes lean towards a touch in my insurgent country. Stuff like The Gourds or Robbie Fulks, or even The Mekons will have a taste in their stuff but nothing full blown. But Gangstagrass is equal parts of both genres and not to mention really professional sounding for something you can get for free. Free is good right? Check it out.

My quest for pitch black British comedy has lead me to Peep Show. Only season one has been released in US and it is not the best season. Which is the best season? I am not sure. Like a lot of Britcoms, it is the overall appeal comes through seeing more than one episode. It all about the way the story builds. And a nifty gimmick which gives it a unique style.

So here's a link to the first part of episode one. Start there and dig further if you find it remotely interesting. This is some funny stuff if you can handle something brutally honest. Each episode builds to an extreme squirmy social situation. I want to write something more detailed. But I have lots of plans.

I enjoy webcomics like Boy on a Stick and Slither
but I also follow newspaper strips online as well. Yeah I like me some Pearls Before Swine but it is actually in papers around here. So here's a link for something that will probably not come to my neck of Penn's Wood. Zippy is a playfully odd strip which is the definition of a cult item. The above link is a good start to understanding Bill Griffith's work. It may take awhile for it to stick but it sure is addictive when you get into its surrealistic media satire groove.

I may be new to podcasts but I am well versed in the slanted funhouse world of cult/psychotronic/ bad cinema. As a struggling movie maker, I find more inspiration in the flawed and failed attempts of past genre specialists than the bland cgi saturated focus grouped efforts of modern Hollywood. On the internet I came upon sites like Eccentric Cinema which wrote smartly about movies that most 'normal” people would consider dumb. But only now have found what seems to be the top of the line in cult movie podcasts, Cinema Diabolica. The production values seem closer to something that might be played on radio, if radio didn't suck, and the guys mix intellect with gut level humor with aplomb.

And coming back to music, I point you in the direction of The Kills' third album Midnight Boom . I never listened to this duo writing off as some White Stripes sort of thing. But boy I'm glad that I listened to them. A rough guitar, some clever “found sound/organic” bits, drum machines, a female singer, and a minimal style which is thoroughly modern but points back to the golden age of first generation NYC CBGB 77 Punk. Greatness in a concise accessible package that is just the right amount of experimentation and straight ahead rock. Recommended.

Well this felt good. Maybe this is the direction to take this. A wild ride right across the digital info-scape. Okay I am done. See you in about a week with a chance of a more focused post here and there.

:D Dette blir post nummer 200 her på bloggen.

Men!

Eugenie: Det stormer ofte i bloggpolis.

Peace Out!

I'm not sure how it happened.

I have become somebody I loathe.

But let me start at the beginning. I am successful and lucky by most measures. Good job, high income, intelligent, reasonably attractive, healthy, loving family, stable upbringing. Compared to others, I have no problems of substance, I have no hard luck tale. On the contrary I have a good luck tale.

Yet my problems are real to me. Many are common problems. Perhaps many are not problems at all, but things I perceive to be problems. Many are simply a consequence of my outlook and attitude.

So here I am - miserable. Worst of all I am miserable because of my own choices, my own actions and my own expectations. I need to change before I lose hope entirely. This is not easy for me; I have tried before. Bad habits are hard to break, and the black dog is never far away.

I've started this blog for two reasons: therapy and commitment. I hope the act of writing will provide me with some form of release and absolution; a confessional if you will. I hope too that publicly sharing my thoughts and intentions will keep me from straying too far off course. I don't really care if nobody ever reads this blog; the mere chance that you might is enough.

So this is a journey of discovery and healing. I don't have all the answers, but I hope to discover some along the way. Feel free to join me on this journey and offer your wisdom, support or abuse as you see fit. My ultimate aim? I'm not sure. To be happy with my life I guess. I think that's all that anyone can hope for.

I want to be a better person.

My friend Kristina wants to get a tattoo. We decided the most pretentious one for her to get would be a detailed portrait of a prominent philosopher, like Immanuel Kant. Then we realized that an even better (more pretentious) option would be to have two philosophers in profile facing each other, with opposing or maybe complementary quotes below them (swirling around them?). Finally, we thought it would make the most sense to take biographical sketches of two imaginary philosophers to a tattoo artist, who would then take that biographical information to draw portraits of each on our forearms/ankles/cleavage. (Just kidding, I don't have cleavage.)

Another option would be to use this opportunity to get a tattoo that you can use for reference, like "i before e, except after c." Or maybe just words that are hard to spell, or math equations you need for class. I often confuse the backslash with the forward slash, for example, so I could get one that says, "Backslash /" and below it "Forward slash \" (unless it is the other way around). Another good one is one that could show the appropriate use of the semicolon; for example, a tattoo could read ";however" as a reminder to use a semicolon instead of a comma when "however" is in the middle of a sentence. Or maybe you can't remember whether single or double quotation marks should be used when you have a quote within a quote within a quote. In that case, you could have a tattoo that looks like this ""'""'"" and you would always remember.

Other good choices are tattoos that make you look old, like forehead wrinkles or nasolabial folds, or a drawn-on receding hairline on a guy who's shaved his head. That way, a stranger can not only feel a pleasant sense of relief upon finding out that you are not actually old/balding, but will also not experience any alarm once he/she has known you a long time and you actually do start aging. It's kind of like the same function powdered wigs served in eighteenth-century Europe, only much, much more permanent (better).

Finally, you could tattoo every word you write on the internet on your body. That way, you might write more thoughtful, well-crafted sentences. Alternatively, you could just have "meta" tattooed on your body and resign yourself to a life of self-hatred.

I recently had a conversation with a friend who does corporate bloggy things, and the bottom line was this... most corporate blogs suck, right?

Well, yes. But they don't have to. So I've decided to start this blog to do my own snarky thing, which I usually do with politics, but this time with corporate blogs.

Every board room in America is having this conversation -

We need a blog. I have no idea what that is. But we need one. Now.

Before we get started, have a look at my series of reviews of political blogs in Ohio. That'll be a good jumping off point for any marketing or PR division head getting ready to take the dive. Then come back here, and we'll start the reviews.

In the meantime, make suggestions for corporate blogs that need a good going over.

Well, there's not too much more to say about the current season, but I've been keeping things up to date in the Spring 2008 Summary. The things I'm still watching are Kaiba, Kure-nai, Daughter of Twenty Faces, Library War, Allison and Lillia, Macross Frontier (I'm just a sucker for Yoko Kanno), Chi's Sweet Home, and for my dumbass guilty pleasure show, Kamen no Maid Guy.

Hope to do writeups for Allison and Lillia, Vampire Knight, and Wagaya no Oinari-sama soon.

Sorry folks, no Sunday Pages today - we've been busy all weekend with the Bristol Comics Expo. But stay tuned this time next week for a report on our time there, including some rather exciting news about yours truly and Spider-Man. We've also got some interviews to post at some point, too. Normal reviewing service, meanwhile, will resume tomorrow...
