A Paul Bradshaw Tweet caught my eye today – about show us a better way.

A Paul Bradshaw Tweet caught my eye today – about show us a better way.

Here's what it's all about:

The UK Government wants to hear your ideas for new products that could improve the way public information is communicated. The Power of Information Taskforce is running a competition on the Government's behalf, and we have a £20,000 prize fund to develop the best ideas to the next level.

So, finding myself with a spare hour tonight, I donned my thinking slippers and fez, and came up with some of my own suggestions:

Public transport mapping: lets say goodbye to these visually noisy and counter intuitive conceptual public transport maps, and hello to bus routes mapped onto roads. Of course this isn't particularly revolutionary, they already have it via Google Transit over the pond. Still, factor in all that useful Journey Planner info that's already available (take London for example), and it could be updated in real-time.

A past, present and future roadworks map: It's all well and good providing maps of current and planned roadworks (some local authorities are already doing this - see Worcestershire County Council). But what about those of us who walk past the diggers and drills every morning with a grim sense of de ja vu (that includes anyone with the gross misfortune of having to walk up Wood Lane every bastarding day). When was the road last dug, and how long was the road in question due to last, according to contractual agreements between the authority in question and contractors? My dad is a retired civil engineer, and some of the stories he's told me over the years about corner-cutting right the way back to the 50s are well worthy of investigation.

A comprehensive map of digital divide: if you took all the information out there on PC ownership, time spent online, broadband coverage, Wifi spots, and every other online-related stat out there, and pipe them into a map, we can once and for all, get a comprehensive insight into the 'digital divided' across the UK, and beyond.

Map of UK dialects: At the BBC we have a couple of linguists, and an online synthesizer which talks presenters through the niceties of newsworthy proper nouns. But what if we took data from university studies into dialects (something a lot farther-reaching than this British Library example), and put them through a synthesizer-map mashup? This could take on a whole life of its own, if the public were encouraged to record and broadcast their living dialects via Youtube. I'm not sure what practical application it might have, but it would certainly help folk brush up on their character-based joke-telling down the pub.

When you're in SL®, you can dress up as anything, be anything, wear anything. It's your choice (erm unless you're planning on attending SLB5 LOL). However, that said, there are days when you just feeling like being comfy. No complicated outfits or clothes. Nothing you have to match. I'm talking your go to clothing. Like all fashionistas, it is safe to say that I change my outfit in SL EVERYDAY. I am physically unable to accomplish ANYTHING until I've changed my outfit for the day! I also like typing in all caps to create EMPHASIS!

Why you ask, am I doing a mashup post instead of rebuilding my shop? Why because I'm a major slug! I will say I have the prefabs completed and textured, and just a small tease here - I'm planning on selling these as prefab shops. I plan on doing a whole series. Plus my sale of $1L items is still going on, so can't exactly take down the shop!

Anywho - that all said, I have clothes and designers I consider my 'go to' clothing. Things I wear a lot because they are versatile and cool. Specifically, I really love anything from Pixeldolls. I've been busy lately with new builds, so not shopping so much. I had a $1000L giftcard from Pixeldolls burning a hole in my virtual pocket, so last night, off I went. I picked up these jeans which I think are an oldie but a goodie. I LOVE jeans that remind me of jeans I had as a teenager. I simply don't know why but I do. For instance I'm absolutely in love with my Nyte and Day faded jeans, but I'll save those for another post! The Pixeldoll jeans are the sort that you would buy new, with no fading and then wear for like a week straight to 'wear' them in and wash them 100 times till they fit you perfectly.

I'm also wearing the new "Sloane" hair from Tousled, which is absolutely drool worthy, OMG the bobby pins, the bobby pins....My skin is as usual LF Chai, Trinity, the bright pink lipstick on this is amazing, the perfect tank top from Pushbutton Industries, and OF COURSE (insert shameless plug here), my own colorful bangles, beaded hoop earrings and mother of pearl belt. I'm finishing off the look with a tattoo from Garden of Ku, Day of the Hummingbird and the awesomeness of awesome sandals from *G Field*. I wear these sandals CONSTANTLY lol!

What the f$%~ing c^%$ are you doing? Tracking the most profane tweets... and it turns out the twitterverse can be a very sweary place. As regular readers of this blog will know, I am not averse to a bit of profanity every now and then. Okay, at times swearing is juvenile, unneccessary, abusive and unfunny. But it can often be cathartic, creative, concise and clever, too. So, I put together a Yahoo Pipe to seek out the sweariest tweets (those using multiple expletives) and set up a Weebly page to display the results (though you can also subscribe to the feed). Turns out it's also a useful way to see what's really riling folks right now. Link

So here goes with the "two posts a week" thing. Here's to me not running out of crap to put up here. Anyway, about this next mashup:

a) No I am not on Vampire Weekend's collective dick like so many others seem to be. Has anyone here listened to Paul Simon?

b) I do, however, enjoy them. Sue me. I think they're pretty good. Don't hate.

c) I know the last mashup I posted involved Missy Elliot, but so does this one. Deal with it.

Get Y/UR A-Punk On (Missy Elliot vs. Vampire Weekend)

d) What the hell, I might as well get this off my chest in one fell post. Here's the last of the Missy-ups (for now).

She\'s A Lotus (Missy Elliot vs. Flying Lotus)

Note: If you're a fan of J Dilla, Madlib, Oh No, or anything that is beautiful in this world, please check out Flying Lotus. And then join my letter writing campaign urging him to collaborate with MF Doom.

So those are the mashups for this post. Here's the part of the post where I give you a song two songs that I like.

Crystal Castles- Good Time

and

Danger- 11h30

I really wish I knew how to make vocals sound like that. +56 points for the unapologetically epic intro.

A while ago I wrote about Tag Galaxy, one of the coolest mashups that I've seen. You should take a look at it. It's an awesome way to sort through Flickr images.

Now, Poke NY has created a YouTube mashup up. It's called up18, and it displays YouTube videos in an elegant interface.

To play YouTube videos with a certain tag, simply add it to the end. Thus, "http://upl8.tv/football" will show a collection of YouTube videos tagged football. Press the spacebar and the next video loads. Add a + sign to search for two videos with two tags.

I think mashups are an interesting tool for marketers. Think about it. We hear about the massive amounts of content on the web. There are millions of blogs, millions of photos, millions of videos. Google does a great job at helping us find the content, but tools like these do it way more elegantly and interestingly.

Now, imagine of a brand could launch something like this. Maybe a brand that's sponsoring the Olympics could create a web site that searches YouTube for all Olympic events. There would be relevant value to that idea.

It would also be a website worth visiting again and again. And the brand would get credit for delivering the content in an interesting way. So think mashups. Because online, everything is miscellaneous, until it's well-organized.

I recently attended the Mashed Museum event, organised by Mike Ellis (Eduserv) which was held on the day prior to the UK Museums and the Web 2008 conference. Further information on the event is available on the MashedMuseum wiki. Frankie Roberto has already written a blog post on his use of Freebase (for providing structured access to collections data from the Science Museum) and the Simile timeline service for visualising the data. However the most comprehensive summary of the day I've found is available on the Findus.org.uk blog which gives an excellent overview of several of the developments, together with a more in depth summary of a development which made use of Twitter, Google Maps, Google earth.

My effort was much simpler - it involved use of the PicLens tool to produce a 3D visualisation of museum objects along similar lines to the 3D visualisation of the history of the University of Bath home page. However rather than focussing on technical development (not a strength of mine) my main interest was in ways in which development activities which take place at mashup events can be shared with a wider community and become embedded within the organisation. And so my visualisation included details of why such a service would be valuable to an organisation (a 3D visualisation may be more engaging than a static 2D Web page and could help to engage new audiences), business models to help to ensure the sustainability of such services (you could have occasional advertisements including in the 3D gallery) and concluded by summarising possible barriers (e.g. accessibility issues) and how those barriers may be addressed. In addition brief technical details were provided for those who might want to know how to implement this type of interface for their own service.

I did wonder, though, whether such supporting materials would be needed - aren't software developers typically self-reliant and capable of working out for themselves how to make use of the lightweight development environments which were used during the event? I was therefore reassured when Michael Twidale raised the issue of the difficulties which can be encountered when using tools such as Yahoo Pipes, which aren't well-documented and fail to provide much assistance if the software fails to work. And several other people at the event agreed with Michael's thoughts, which I recorded as a video clip.

Shouldn't we encourage software developers to record screencasts of their development work, I wonder, explaining why they make decisions which may not be obvious to others, and perhaps even swearing when things go wrong - after all, learning from the mistakes made by other can be a particular valuable way of avoiding making similar mistakes ourselves.

And haven written the above post, I've just received an email from Mike Ellis announcing a 12 minute video clip which summarises the day's event including snippets from many of the developers at the event. Not only has he edited the various clips he took during the day, he's also added music which he'd composed - very impressive stuff!

Just got done with the twebinar hosted by Chris Brogan. It was an interesting way to push information out regarding social media. For those in the know, it gave them insight as to how some of the movers and shapers of social media, marketing and media think in regards to how social media is changing the game. It also was presented in a way that if someone who had "heard" what social media was, but was not entirely sure what IT was, could, perhaps in laymans terms utilize or understand it.

The mashup was interesting in that we had video, we had twitter, we had live webcam, we had twitter aggregators and we had live participants and we had half participants who were following the tweets and not perhaps the video. Even more interesting were the ways that participants were communicating. The primary means being Twitter, but in the Twebinar format, they were talking with individuals that were in the video, they were talking with the moderator, Chris Brogan and they were talking with each other.

Now picture that happening in any other type of moderator, speaker, panel, discussion presentation where everyone was, for the most part, talking at once. In this format it worked. It was staccato like in its essence, but it worked.

With a couple of tweaks here and there. I can definitely see this becoming some type of workable app for future conferences. Perhaps embedding the Twitter app in the screen of the presentation so that everyone could tweet and everyone could read everyone elses tweets without having to possibly toggle betwen Summize and the actual presentation? Either way it worked. Good job to David Alston of Radian6 as well. The good news? This is a 3 part series. What are you waiting for?

Humankind has been using maps ever since we existed, that’s because we simply have a very poor

Humankind has been using maps ever since we existed, that's because we simply have a very poor sense of navigation or maybe that we are too lazy to remember where is the nearest Tesco for example. But not long ago Google Maps came along, revolutionising the way we search and find places without the need of a compass. Further to the excitement, there has been an explosion in the number of Google Maps mashups in recent months, some of which makes mapping more fun, purposeful and most of all social, and I am here to review a few of them.

First of all, I've discovered this quite serviceable tool called MapMe, which allows you to pinpoint your favourite hotspots and personalise it by including photos and videos of the place. It then gives you an option to share it with your mates as well as the community on MapMe. So it's kind of like your personal map becoming available for others to see, simple!

Next is my favourite mashup called TwitterSpy, a tool that allows you to spy on Twitter public timeline in real time. It is built on the combination of both Twitter API and Google Map API and result is simply great! With TwitterSpy you can locate tweeters by their country, city and even by the streets!

Finally, Google Maps has been applied to an art project called SkipWaste. An art graduate Oliver Bishop-Young decided to turn skips to a lounge, swimming pool and garden for a graduate art exhibition, and all of his arty skips can be located via his Google Maps mashup SkipWaste.

Indeed Google Maps Mashups has become a form of Art, and recently been declared so by the Museum of Modern Art in New York according to Google Maps Mania

If you'd like a further reading on Google Maps Mashups, Mashable has posted 13 Must-see Google Maps Mashups, and there are 1,500 posts on the subject on Google Maps Mania.

Life - it just keeps changing. Everyday something becomes a new challenge, because of something else

Life - it just keeps changing. Everyday something becomes a new challenge, because of something else that changed, unexpectedly. Our new needs reflect new requirements, new parameters that must be overcome.

Throughout our life(cycle), the nature of those changes will vary by situation and by urgency. One or more of 'Murphy's Laws' predicts that the most urgent will be the least understood or hardest to remedy.

Whether it's in personal health, family relationships, social issues, political realms, business 'success', nonprofit 'results', or government 'support' - change is the constant. Managing that change, and coordinating it to accommodate diverse populations in equally diverse situations is an enterprise-level undertaking. So why isn't that effort well integrated?

Why aren't our social conversations collected as anecdotes to point to symptoms? Then why aren't our response actions aimed at the root cause - instead of the 'because' (symptoms)...? Perhaps it's as simple as:

We're disconnected!

True, we have now been inducted into the world of online SELF-publishing, complete with video to document our 'intelligence'(?). We can rant in any of several forums and re-present ourselves in any of several media styles.

But what for...?

Even those sites that endear us to some worthy cause seldom capture our 'requirements' in a manner that even the novice programmer would accept for building the 'code' for the 'program' that could meet our 'need'. Even if an 'application' of effort was created, it might not even serve the original user population, let alone be scalable or able to be leveraged for reuse elsewhere, on someone else's 'platform', or in another 'environment'. Perhaps we should consider gathering 'enterprise-level' requirements to help with our

Global Relationship Management (GRM)

For that to be possible, we can turn to the art/craft of business analysis. Somehow we have to collect the 'user story' needs and turn them into functional 'human interface' results, locally and globally. What we must also avoid is 'analysis paralysis' by making BETA progress, pending 'perfection'.

Cooperation at this level demands a systems approach that accounts for all stakeholders, recognizes all perspectives, objectively creates consensus, amicably enrolls participation, makes those benefits globally available, and accepts that change is the only constant, the 'IF' that prescribes the next 'Therefore'...and

that's not utopian - that's utilitarian.

That's the requirements-gathering utility that we all need, to create a self-managed global platform built on the 'code' of ethics, to enroll us ALL - in a self-correcting 'environment', enabling us sustain our individual - and collective LIFEcycle 'programs', and

to meet our mutual 'needs', globally

Here are five pop songs, both old and new, that feature real instrumentation in a prominent role - i.e. they don't sound like the cookie-cutter, over-produced, synth-laden, sugar pop that permeates the airwaves at times. (Whilst you will find synths and electronic instrumentation in some of these songs, the key criteria is that their primary instrumentation is performed by a musician rather than programmed.)

Paolo Nutini - New Shoes

Who he is: a scottish singer-songwriter (father is of italian descent) who was discovered by his manager when he won a chance to sing a few songs onstage to stand in for a tardy David Sneddon. [Paolo on Wikipedia]

Why I like it: bouncy, jangly acoustic pop with a clappy head-bopping beat - what's not to like? xD Paolo's voice is kinda soulful in a folky way imho and he may not have the deepest story to tell xD but it's interesting enough on the first listen :).

Obligatory Cover: Paolo sings Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" - features a slideshow of Paolo's disturbing prettiness (disturbing for a macho paragon of manliness like myself - girlies (and you, Tim) might like it...)

Alphabeat - Fascination

Who they are: a Danish pop band with an 80s retro pop sound. The Spice Girls asked them to open on their 2007-8 reunion world tour but Alphabeat declined. [Alphabeat on Wikipedia]

What I like about it: The voices of the male and female leads (Anders and Stine) work together well and the chorus is driving and muscly in its own poppy sort of way. Plus there's a definite contemporary air about the song in spite of the very 80s pop sound.

Obligatory Mash-Up: Destiny's Child vs. Alphabeat - Fascination Woman

A-Ha - Minor Earth Major Sky

Who they are: norwegian 80s pop icons - everybody's heard "Take On Me", right? [A-Ha on Wikipedia]

Why I like it: The rolling bass line gets your head bopping and Morten sings in an unusual mode for a pop song which gives the tune a vaguely exotic flavour.

This track is from their 2000 "comeback" album of the same name. I read a review at the time (which I thought was by Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic.com but I can't find it now...) that convinced me to check it out. Whoever the reviewer was they claimed that the album showed A-Ha sticking to pop but bringing it into the adult contemporary realm - pop for adults. I have to agree - there are some very good songs on the album that have the catchiness of radio-friendly pop but a little more longevity than the average 3 minute flash in the pan single due to A-Ha's seemingly mellower and more grounded approach.

Honourable mention: Another song from the same album - Velvet - is sweetly smooth and the video's worth seeing for the simple fact that you don't often see a pop video that hints at necrophilia... O_o

Obligatory Mash-Up: A-Ha vs Royksopp - What Else Is An Early Morning? - fellow norwegians melanchol each other out - Royksopp's awesome surreal video helps :)

Cliff Richard - Devil Woman

Who he is: He's 67 as of the date of this post - and he's the only artist other than Elvis to make it into the UK singles charts for every decade of its existence (1950s - 2000). [Cliff on Wikipedia]

What I like about it: Yes, he's old - he's very old... and so is this song - but the chords and melody in the verse are immediately catchy - Cliff could write some tunes, man! xD If someone doesn't cover this soon I'm going to have to do it...

Obligatory Obscure Cover: Cradle Of Filth actually recorded a version of this song... Since there's no official video some comedian edited a concert appearance by Cliff over it xD.

Yael Naim - New Soul

Who she is: a french-israeli singer-songwriter - she's the first Israeli solo artist to have a top ten hit in the US. [Yael on Wikipedia]

Why I like it: quite high profile as it was used to launch the MacBook Air but the song is ... errr... 'airy', fresh and upbeat anyway. Apparently Steve Jobs himself picked her song for the campaign.

I love to know what's good in pop but I can't stand listening to the radio so if you know of anything good (especially if you think it should be on a list like this xD) please let me know in the Comments!

Okay, WTF?

Okay, WTF?

And I do not say WTF? lightly. I only break out the WTF? for truly WTF?-worthy occasions.

Such as this one.

WTF?

I blame Australia. Weren't the Aussies the ones who got Jediism recognized as a religion? Yes, it's a real religion now. And so Darth Vader is either their Pope or their Anton LaVey, depending on your perspective. So, naturally, from that point ten years ago to this it's an easy stroll to this photo, which was apparently (my Icelandic is somewhat rusty; Paging Bjork!?!?!?!) snapped at a 100% legit ecumenical networking meeting.

Which is not to imply that there is a samizdat or heretical ecumenical meeting underground, although that would be post-worthy as well, if somewhat of a logical impossibility. But we have certainly never let impossibility or logic stop us, as Metro will be only too happy to attest in the comments.

UPDATE:

Bloody Hell! None of the major online translators have an Icelandic-to-English web page translation service. Why, this is SCANDALOUS! SCANDALOUS, I tell you! I finally found one at InterTran, praise be to Cthulhu!

EDIT: If you get that internal server error, try again later. Too many people trying to download at one time!!!

This may be the last thing I posted today because I want to make sure everyone downloads it.

So here's the deal: "any price grants the download of the entire album as high-quality 320kbps mp3s, $5 or more adds the options of FLAC files, plus a one-file seamless mix of the album, $10 or more includes all of the above + a packaged CD (when it becomes available)." And if you are broke, you get a message that looks a lil' somethin' like this:

I have opted to pay $0.00 because:

I may donate later
I can't afford to pay
I don't really like Girl Talk
I don't believe in paying for music
I have already purchased this album
I don't value music made from sampling
I am part of the press, radio, or music industry
Other reasons

I'd suggest/recommend paying a little cash, but that decision is yours.
