I've had a bunch of Loudon Wainwright III vinyl for about 10 years. Maybe listened to one album one time. I'm a big fan of the rest of the family - Rufus, his famous son, Rufus' sister, Martha, and the McGarrigle Sisters, one of whom is Loudon's ex-wife and Rufus' mother. I've always heard how great he is. I loved him on M*A*S*H when I was a teenager - he made occasional cameos as a folk singin' doctor who stayed with Hawkeye and B.J. in "the swamp." On those episodes, scenes would be framed with the funny-sad songs he wrote for the show. But later in life, I just never quite got over the hump with him. He is an artist I respect and admire, but really dont' want to listen to - like Lou Reed after Transformer.

I know his song "Motel Blues" from hearing Alex Chilton do it on one of those mid-90's Big Star rereleased live and rarity albums, of which, there were too many. And I love Big Star, but I digress. I liked the song fine, but I didn't "get it." I recently found a version of Loudon doing it while looking for Rufus Wainwright stuff, and was truly moved. Chilton missed the self-loathing and desperation in his version. The audience thinks it's supposed to funny, and then has no idea what to think. And that's what they call "Art."

He may very well be an asshole, but he is a talented asshole.

I'm worried about a friend. I know in the long run she'll be okay, but right now her life is super-stress and I feel bad not being able to help take care of her. *le sigh. I love being a Martha.*

One of my closest friends (was one of the BMs in my wedding) is pregnant. For the first pregnancy in over two years, I am THRILLED for her. So happy I cried. Seeing her husband so excited warmed my heart tonight.

Work has been pretty stressful for the past couple of weeks. It's not horrible, but it makes me ready to leave work at 3pm.

Our walking-team found out today that there is no way we can win the $480. This isn't money I had counted on, but could have really made for a cool August.

I have been dealing with some physical symptoms that can't be attached to anything specific; that worries me. I'll call a doctor later in the week.

A blogging network is interested in me. THIS is exciting!

I have three posts saved in draft that I'm afraid to put up. I love being an emotional wiener.

Today the Catholic Church celebrates St. Martha, sister of Mary and Lazarus. We all know Martha, of

Today the Catholic Church celebrates St. Martha, sister of Mary and Lazarus. We all know Martha, of “Martha and Mary,” sisters of Lazarus. Usually when we think of Martha, we think of the exchange between her and Jesus when Martha is bustling around working while her sister Mary is sitting at Jesus feet. Martha complains, and Jesus admonishes her that “Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." That scene seems to diminish Martha (notwithstanding the fact that Martha took care of necessary tasks and the world could not survive without its Marthas).

Martha gets her moment, however. It occurs when Jesus arrives after the death of Lazarus. Martha chides Jesus for not showing up earlier, telling him that he could have prevented the death of her brother if he had arrived in time. Then she adds that "even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you." Jesus tells her he is the resurrection and the life and asks if she believes that whoever believes in him will live even if he dies. And Martha, without hesitation, professes her faith: "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world."

This is Martha’s shining moment. She demonstrates enormous faith, even as she is mourning her brother's death. We don't know what significance Martha's affirmation had for Jesus at that moment, but in his humanness, her affirmation surely meant something to Him. It is an affirmation that reveals the glory of God.

In terms of our own lives, the Women’s Bible Commentary frames the question Martha faced this way: "Can I let go of the limits that one places on what is possible in order to embrace the limitless possibilities offered by Jesus?" Can we?

Are you there, God? It’s me Candy~

So I think I have a major phobia...could this make me a freak??
Is there something in the Bible that talks about phobias? I will have to look into this.

Not that I could find.

I did find stuff on fretting, kinda like Martha did when Christ came to visit.

Luke 10:41
But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,

She was freaking out about Jesus coming to her house and I can feel her pain.

Maybe I just "fret" too much. Anxiety is defiantly there.

I came home today to find a "gaggle" of kids in my room!
They were using my computer for graphics that their computer doesn't have, but the panic in my face was visible.

Unfortunately for the sweet awesome teens, they were berated with "GET OUT"!! They didn't even know why I was freaking out!

My room is really the only place I can be alone, well at least every third day :)

I don't really have a problem if they knock and need something but I actually had to leave the house today. Anxiety?? YES!

I feel so bad!
Freaky mom? maybe.

Why do I have this roomaphobia (another made up word)

I have this phobia about my room, yes my bedroom. Sometimes even my house. I'm not sure where this started but I actually feel panicky when most people enter my lair. It has even taken me a couple years to get cable just because I know a perfect stranger will be roaming my house and in my comfort zone.

This beast might be another one of the reasons I keep my door shut and everyone (animals included) out of my sanctuary.

He doesn't fret, he mainly drools, eats and sleeps. No anxiety for Arson.

He has the perfect life....

Maybe I need to take advice from my sweet beast Arson who loves to invade peoples space and loves to sleep in my room :)

[caption id="attachment_119" align="alignnone" width="420" caption="Arson never frets!"][/caption]

With an insatiable appetite for intrigue, Kenya's politicians are already re-aligning for the next presidential election, even though the polls are 5 years away.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="217" caption="Martha Karua, the Minister for Justice. She will vie for the presidency - in 2012."][/caption]

A highly charged political atmosphere contributed to the chaos of Kenya's elections in December 2007. Five years of campaigning had whipped up violent emotions among the country's 42 ethnic groups, with each feeling that its candidate had to win the presidency at all cost. Threats against opposing ethnic groups were issued by candidates across the national divide.

In spite of the deaths of hundreds and displacement of half a million people, Kenya's politicians have not learnt much from the experience as campaigns begin 5 years too early. President Mwai Kibaki is serving his last term of office in accordance with Kenya's constitution, with allies dumping him and embarking on their own campaigns.

The latest entrant into the race is the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Martha Karua. The tenacious lawyer is a key Kibaki ally who played a prominent role in negotiations early this year that created Kenya's giant coalition.

Negotiations led by former United Nations Secretary General Koffi Annan were meant to reconcile President Kibaki of the PNU party with opposition leader Raila Odinga of ODM after the disputed December polls. Karua, representing Kibaki's PNU, maintained a hardline stance against the ODM. Eventually, a coalition was formed with Kibaki retaining the presidency and Raila becoming Prime Minister.

Ms Karua is said to have grown disillusioned with President Kibaki for his apparent preference for Uhuru Kenyatta as a successor. It just so happens that Kibaki is Uhuru's baptismal godfather. Other persons said to be in Kibaki's good books are Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Internal Security Minister, George Saitoti.

As a result of presidential ambitions among Kibaki allies, the PNU alliance is beginning to fracture. Ford Kenya has said that it will remain a separate entity as has the Democratic Party. Uhuru Kenyatta's KANU party is not likely to dissolve itself if statements from its members are anything to go by. Kalonzo Musyoka's ODM-Kenya is unlikely to willingly subsume itself into PNU. Thus, Kibaki and PNU are being described as lame ducks with little relevance in the emerging political equations.

The heightened presidential campaigns have been criticized by both President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Both of them say that government leaders should be serving Kenyans. Currently, almost 60% of the country's population survives in abject poverty, with little access to water, electricity and health care. Rising food prices and fuel costs are making life harder for majority of Kenyans amidst ethnic tension and rising crime. In this light, early presidential campaigns are being viewed as an example of insensitivity and corruption among Kenya's elite, most of whose income is largely untaxed.

Experience in Kenya's history indicates that the person likely to become president is one entirely unexpected to win. Founding president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta spent over 20 years in exile and close to a decade in detention before he won the seat. His successor, Daniel arap Moi was a former school teacher from a small tribe in the Rift Valley and who was considered as, "a passing cloud." The current president, Mwai Kibaki, had by the end of the 1990s been dismissed as a spent force with an uncanny ability to procrastinate crucial decisions.

If the past is any indicator, it can be concluded that the noise makers in Kenya's political scene have little chance of winning the coveted seat.

“Martha, the last known passenger pigeon [Ectopistes migratorius], died in 1914 in the Cincinnati Zoo.”

Sometimes I wish humans would just disappear and the Earth reclaim the locales we have so meticulously manicured, like in Alan Weisman's book The World Without Us. Or like in I am Legend, which was surprisingly awesome until computer generated zombies started laying traps for Will Smith and the religious discourse kicked in.

Empty and abandoned places are always sort of interesting. I've had some weird dreams on the topic. The recurring one is very spooky - based on something that really happened to me which was warped by my unconscious - and I'm trying, rather ineptly, to turn into a short story. The other was a one-timer: me in a black vacuum (outer space?), sparks start jetting out of my abdomen, and I realize that this is probably what dying is.

I was going to talk more about my history of dreaming and the legacy of how things come to artists in dreams, but it was sounding pretty New Age and self indulgent.

Not sure how I rambled my way to this point, actually, so I'll conclude with the fact that I ate a delicious ice cream sandwich for the first time in several years tonight.

Yeah me and my friend have this random bush pathway that's behind these houses. Then off the trail a little bit is our spot, which leads to our other spot...which happens to be the back of a cemetery. It's not as weird as it sounds, the graves are ages away from us, we're just on the grass leading down a hill at the back. It's a good place to lie, look at the sky, and listen to an iPod. Ok maybe that is a bit weird...oh well, this is what we did on the way back through the forest:

We're BIG fans of Doctor Who. It's back on Australian TV now, Sunday night at 7:30pm. Sadly enough this is its fourth and final season. Which sucks, I wanted it to go for at least six. Hopefully they'll pick it up again at a later date. I'll just have to borrow all the DVDs off my friend.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="343" caption="An Ood"]

I think season four though will live up to season 3, which definitely raised the bar. Martha was the sidekick

then, and she was awesome. Catherine Tate (who plays Donna) has done pretty well though so far. And Rose

is also making a return sooner or later in the series, as well as Martha so I've been told. It'll definitely go out with a bang.

The latest episode aired was the one in Pompeii, which was really intense. But in the next episode the Ood are making a return. I love these guys, they're a weird looking slave race who have this little ball thing that makes them look like they're constantly drinking. LOVE this show, can't wait to see the rest of the season.

When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord,

When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." John 11.32.

We first encounter Mary of Bethany in the gospels about six months before the occasion being described in this morning's reading. There we learn that Martha, Mary's sister, had opened their home, just outside Jerusalem, to Jesus and his disciples. That was a lot of mouths to feed, so Martha went to work in the kitchen and expected her sister to join her, but instead Mary "sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said" (Luke 10.39). To sit at the feet of a rabbi was to be his disciple, just as Paul was once sat "at the feet of Gamaliel" (Acts 22.3, literal translation) — one of the great rabbis in Jerusalem — and learned from him the law. So Mary had joined with the Twelve and left her sister to cook alone. It won her a rebuke from Martha but a commendation from Jesus himself: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things ... only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10.42).

Now, six months later, something has "been taken away from her" — her brother Lazarus. He had fallen ill and they had sent for Jesus, but Jesus hadn't come and Lazarus had died. Only now has Jesus arrived, and now is too late. But still, unlike her sister Martha, Mary falls at Jesus feet. If to sit at his feet made Mary a disciple, falling at his feet makes her a worshipper. It is an act of reverence. In the Acts of the Apostles, as Peter entered the house where Cornelius was, "Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. But Peter made him get up. 'Stand up,' he said, 'I am only a man myself.'" (Acts 10.25-26). But Jesus is not "only a man" to Mary. He is "Lord", and, as Mary makes plain, if he had been there earlier Lazarus would not have died. Mary knows that Jesus can heal; now she is about to learn that he can raise the dead.

Which leads me to the third appearance of Mary in the gospels, in the very next chapter. "Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honour. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (John 12.1-3).

Again Martha is busy with her domestic duties and again Mary is at the feet of Jesus; but this time it is not just as disciple or even as worshipper but as lover. The pouring out of the nard over the feet of Jesus is a pouring out of Mary herself in extravagant love and costly devotion. To let down your hair in public was taboo in those days. A woman must let down her hair only for her husband. Letting down your hair was an act of self-giving, self-surrender.

At the feet of Jesus: it was where Mary of Bethany was always to be found. Learning, worshipping, loving. May that be true of me too, today and every day.

If you are currently watching Doctor Who on the Sci Fi Channel stop reading this now, because this is my review of the 2 part season finale, and it will contain spoilers.

PUT THAT BOOK DOWN, SPOILERS!

To read my review of part one, The Stolen Earth click here

Come on, you knew he wasn't going anywhere, didn't you. Let's be honest about that. And you also knew that that hand was going be involved, I mean why else has it been sitting there under the console all this time, and not under the decks in trunk H for hand. This is an example why Doctor Who is much more Fantasy than Science Fiction, while the universe has set rules, it doesn't mind bending them a bit to tell the story, and it doesn't get bogged down into the hows and whys with pages of dreadful technobable to explain it. One rapidly spoken sentence, from the Doctor explains it all away, and lets us get on with the adventure. And while The Doctor has escaped regeneration, he, Donna, Rose and Captain Jack are still trapped in the TARDIS, which has been transported to the ominious and vaguely Death Star looking Dalek Crucible.

A few more old faces coming back, Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler join the family reunion. Two of the better extended family characters the RTD has brought into the mythos. (Let's face it we never saw much of what happened to the families companions left behind in the original series) I think that Mr. Davies got it right on with these two, the mother left to worry and fret, and the boyfriend, jealous and upset of being left behind. Mickey and Jackie arrive in the nick of time to save Sarah Jane, (We Smiths have to stick together) Only to have the three of them surrender and be taken up to the Dalek ship so they can find the Doctor, and the TARDIS. Meanwhile, Martha has gotten herself to Germany with the mysterious Osterhagen Key, has a mysterious conversation with a woman with a gun, and then descends down a hidden elevator. Captain Jack gets himself shot by the Dalek Supreme, so that he can be taken off, presumed dead (but we all know Jack can't die) and be an ace in the hole for the Doctor. The Daleks have the technology to disable and destroy a TARDIS (something they have gained fighting the Time War) and they attempt to do just that, having disabled all TARDIS defenses and chucked it down the trash chute and to the fiery power source of the Crucible, but Donna is still trapped on board, and death seems certain for her and the TARDIS. When Donna, hiding under the console, seeking protection sees the Hand jar glowing with regenretive energy. One touch and it explodes, and vooosh! from the hand a whole new Doctor grows. This new Doctor – identical to the current incarnation manages to get the TARDIS out of danger and quietly slips out beyond detection. At last the Doctor and Davros meet again, (not doing the nostalgia tour tho) the Doctor presses for information. The Dalek's have taken 27 worlds from across time and space, and brought them to a time pocket in the Medusa Cascade, and these 27 worlds will bring about the power the Dalek's need to power their super weapon and destroy everything. The Daleks are assured of success too because Dalek Caan's here too, all crazed and making dire predictions (The mad mutant was truly a sight to behold, Nick Briggs' sing songy delivery of Caan's ramblings was pitch perfect.) As Davros goes on about the plans of the Daleks - the unmaking of all things not Dalek with the power radiation from the Crucible's main weapon, the reality bomb. (which apparently unrealizes things) Twist and turns the Children of Time move into position. Jack finds Mickey, Jackie and Sarah Jane, and Sarah reveals her hold card, a bomb given to her by an alien fortune teller, a very powerful bomb inside a diamond. Martha has taken the Osterhagen Key and with two other UNIT members, has threatened the Dalek's master plan, by threaten to destroy the earth with 26 sub surface Nuclear Devices that will crack the planet open (Osterhagen = Earth's Gone) and then Jack and Co also make their presence known – threatening to destroy the Crucible with the Warpstar bomb in their possession. The Daleks transport everyone to Davros' lab, thwarting all the attempts to stop their plan. But the arrival of the TARDIS and the newly born Doctor and Donna arrive, and together the Children of Time step up and save existence. I want details a surprise for those of you have not seen it, and the revolutions revealed about Donna, the Doctor and the other Doctor (as Jack says.. "3 doctors –I cant tell you what I'm thinking right now") Unlike the previous episode, which dragged out the re-introductions and was intended from keeping the Doctor and Rose apart as long as possible, this episode flys by, which is interesting because t runs a good 20m longer than the average Doctor Who episode. There were times where I wished they took a bit longer on things. The goodbyes to Martha, Jack, Mickey and Sarah Jane seemed extreme rushed. (Mickey fans, I have a feeling you will want to keep your eyes out for Torchwood Series 3).

RTD was really saying goodbye here too, I know he still has 4 more specials coming down the pipe, but I have a hunch they will all stand alone, even from each other. He was really out there to give fans what they wanted (or thought they wanted) I have a friend, Thomasin who will squeal with delight when she sees what happens on the beach back in Bad Wolf Bay. Donna however, Donna made an incredible journey since we first met her that Christmas all dressed in white. It was sad to see Dalek Caan's perdiction come true in such a horrible way, but it doesn't really come true either.

There are few moments that I loved more than others in this episode

- David Tennant channeling a fantastc Catherine Tate impression,

- Anything with Davros,(not doing the nostalgia tour)

- Donna Noble Time Lady

- At 36 minutes in and everyone is finally together

- Donna throwing Sarah Jane off of Capn Jack

Some of the things I really didn't care much for

- I'm so sorry, (If I ever hear that line again…)

- Happy ending/ bit of a fanwank for Rose in Pete's world returning to Bad Wolf Bay (although I loved Jackie sassing the Doctor with the name of the baby)

A fairly satisfying end to it all I would say, giving almost everyone an end to a journey. Jack and Sarah Jane pretty much go through mostly unscathed, of course due to their series. And setting a pretty clean table for Steven Moffatto begin work on Series 5 in 2010.
