A movie adaption of the Tony award winning musical, "Nine" is taking a hold of the big screen and it's not making its debut without some star entertainers. 33 year-old Grammy award winning singer Fergie has been cast to play Saraghina in the movie. She performs a racy song, "Be Italian" with actor Daniel Day-Lewis. Along for the Hollywood ride is Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Judi Dench, Marion Cotillard, and Nicole Kidman. We're expecting this movie to be a hit, since it's being directed by Rob Marshall, the same guy who directed the amazing "Chicago". This isn't the singer's first appearance in a movie; she had minor roles in "Grindhouse" and "Poseidon". Besides prancing on the beach as a prostitute, Fergie has other things up her sleeves...well, on her feet. She just debuted her two new shoe lines and collections with Brown Shoe. Also, she's back with the great group that brought us "Monkey Business" in 2005-the Black Eyed Peas-working on a new album.

It is not necessarily a chronological biopic of her triumphant yet tragic life, but rather seems to distill the very essence of it. Marion Cotillard, in the title role, is nothing short of spectacular and certainly deserved an Oscar. Highly recommended!

Distributie: Marion Cottilard, Gerard Depardieu

Premii: Oscar pentru Marion Cottilard ( Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role), Cesar ( cea mai buna actrita), samd.

Nota: 9

Un "Must see" alaturi de Walk the Line si Ray.

Mi se pare fenomenal modul in care Marillion se scufunda in personajul pe care il interpreteaza. Toata frumusetea din filme ca : "Jeux D'enfants", "Un long dimanche de fiançailles", "A good year" dispare si lasa loc micutei Edith.

Scena in care tanara Edith canta "La Marseillaise".

But first .... spuneti-mi ce parere aveti de film.

!!! SPOILERS AHEAD !!!

Amnesia has always been a narrative shortcut for dramatic effect, particularly one of suspense, inserted in the beginning of a film (as the plot mobilizes into a detective investigation of identity) or towards its very end (as a requisite hurtle before the sappy reunion). While Wall•E is no stranger to this rule, the film and its titular character do however share an uneasy relationship to the processes of remembrance and memorization, the twin halves of what we normally assign to as "memory."

Segwaying into Meg's post about the hazy "new order" between programmes and personalities, on the most basic level, Wall•E and the Gels aboard the Axiom are "humanized" exactly because they learn to replicate what they see and hear from stored cultural knowledge embodied by the Hello Dolly VHS and the computer's memory bank of our civilization before Earth was trashed. Humanity abides not to the laws of biology, but whether one possesses the mental capacity for acquiring and recalling information, followed by enacting it within a wholly contingent situation. Alanis was right: you live, you learn. If comedy is the result of miscommunication, then our laughs and sighs during Wall•E and Eve's initial courtship stem from watching signs of affection being misread and ignored by someone who's oblivious to their intentions. Eve has only one directive so far: to find the MacGuffin (seedling in a boot).

By the second act, everything slowly changes for both robots and humans alike, culminating in a sumptuous scene of emotional recognition by Eve of her own recorded memory, her POV video as surveillance footage. It's like watching your home movies 10 years from now and noticing details that escape your attention the first time around. Eve not only witnesses Wall•E's persistent dedication during her downtime, but the same identical scenes she experienced before, now in a radically different light. Walter Benjamin couldn't be more prescient about this triumphant moment of self-awareness through the unconscious mechanism of film: tapping into a realm where objects are more fleeting than concrete, visible only within the frame that hold its precious cargo of frozen moments, gone then, here forever.

Evidently a different nature opens itself to the camera than opens to the naked eye – if only because an unconsciously penetrated space is substituted for a space consciously explored by man...The act of reaching for a lighter or a spoon is familiar routine, yet we hardly know what really goes on between hand and metal, not to mention how this fluctuates with our moods. Here the camera intervenes with the resources of its lowerings and liftings, its interruptions and isolations, it extensions and accelerations, its enlargements and reductions.

Coincidentally, Benjamin's observation mirrors director Andrew Stanton's own attitude in hiring talented cinematographer, Roger Deakins, as a lighting consultant for recreating the photographic apparatus's penchant for flaws and blemishes, an absent trait in the world of animation, where imagination soars without limit, often without direction either.

We actually had a lot of stuff that wasn't correct in our software. The math wasn't doing the right thing, so all the subtle imperfections that you're used to, that you don't pay attention to that happen with the camera lens — the way things go distorted in the background, when they do it, how the plane of focus works, what things do in the foreground — all that was either slightly or majorly incorrect with our software, and had always been. I wanted to use the camera much more directly as a tool for intimacy in the film. I mean, I got a metal box falling in love with a metal box and a dystopian background, where am I going to get the intimacy? I'm going to use it with the camera by how shallow of a lens we use and how shallow the focus is, how narrow the lens is. So fixing all that and having Roger there to sort of confirm that we were in the right ballpark with it visually was just key to getting a lot of what comes, I think, unconsciously when you're watching the film.

Luckily enough we do not need a monitor screen to access our memory, but the film, being a work of science fiction, never treads away from articulating a future where scientific wonders afford the ability to prosthetize our mind from its body. Look up the Precogs from the grandmaster himself, PKD. Instead of being confined to a particular individual or even a localized site (the brain), memory as potential and kinetic energy is transferable and disperse, to be memorized, to be recalled, to be used again and again.

Eve fidgets with her hands as she reacts tearfully to the "It Only Takes a Moment" scene from Hello Dolly, echoing the same movement of yearning that Wall•E expressed, their behavior results from imitation, their hands gradually engraved with familiar reminiscence. Through this uncanny refraction by media itself are the two able to meet eye to eye, heart to heart. This is the stuff of remembrance, in which knowledge is retrieved in a manner that speaks beyond the level of barebone plots to byzantine associations worthy of prophecies and elegies, where meaning seeks confusion as an equal adversary.

When we finally reached the final act, the threat of amnesia leaves Wall•E in a state far worse than death itself, bereft of soul and spirit. Reading the weekend testimonies, men and women, young and old wept when Wall•E reverted back to his automated self; saving him from deletion inadvertently made the adorable spunky cube into a flat square, a shell of wires and silicon chips. Of course, this also happens to be the moment when the film succumbs to the cheap miracles of resuscitation by the 'Snow White' kiss (in this case, a spark of electricity), one can only eye-roll the numerous times Matrix got through that ordeal unscathed from fanboys booing at the incredulous act of faith performed by Trinity to the dying Neo. But I guess that film was an allegory of religion or something, I prefer its simpler elements: leather, bullet time, and Keanu. Most people subscribes to what Richard Corliss recently stated in his appraisal of Wanted that fantasy films work because of a built-in motor aptly called "movie sense" in contrast to the scriptures of our common sense.

This answer may be sufficient for most audience members leaving the theater, but I think Wall•E already has its own built-in logic for this unexplainable feat of life after coma. Recall that the film returns incessantly to a pair of hands in dire search of its righty and lefty, and that the explicit origin of this romantic desire comes from a fragment of an 1960s Hollywood musical. Despite of its revamped setup, the indirect reference that director Andrew Stanton, the know-it-all movie magpie, wants the smarter kids out there to think about is Chaplin's City Lights. Joe Morgenstern beat me to the chase, but I'll have my revenge soon. For a more nuanced study of physical comedy's legacy of jesters and simpletons (Wall•E has a vast family tree), look for the related post from Keaton. In the 1931 silent film comedy, the tramp falls in love with a blind flower girl, he finds money for her surgery but lands himself in the slammer. With her sight restored along with a new flowershop, she gives the downtrodden tramp a flower, only realizing when their hands touched that he was her mysterious benefactor. She utters, "I can see now," and these final words of the film verbally substitutes for the inexpressible warmth of their third skin, a crossroads of caresses between forgotten soulmates. Stanton gleefully simulates this classic scene by dividing it temporally and spatially (and gender reversal!), first with Eve's metaphoric blindness, then at the end, with Wall•E's amnesia as mechanical blindness, both overcome by the power of touch, of hands enmeshed into one, holding its own form of material memory. In short, a love conquers all ending that isn't a deux ex machina, it's all there, like bread crumbs leading up to the satisfying payoff.

What's truly delightful and moving about Wall•E's intricate layering and retracing of past relics with present crises is the sentimental grasp it has over the viewer, paralyzing us to believe fully in the utopian dimension of the film, and I'm not referring to the optimistic epilogue, but rather how memory is fluidly passed on from human to robot, robot to robot, and on a metalevel, old media to new media, almost to the point of near indistinguishable. Yesterday's mass culture is today's national treasure. So much of the film, of form and content, relies on the fetish of live action by animation, the meticulous rendering of digital bits into its analog reality, and with that, comes the possibility of actual affect through special effects. What Wall•E hopes we remember after another 700 years is that it too was a special time capsule, a host of cultural history and emotional relevancy, waiting to be imitated by a new classic far far away.

P.S. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing that I wasn't re-viewing the tragic fates befalling on our star-crossed lovers, it would've be relentlessly cruel for Stanton to end on the lingering mood of The Notebook or A Very Long Engagement. Rated G for happily ever after.

Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard were on set in Chicago this week filming "Public Enemies". This new Michael Mann film has a star studded cast that includes Johnny, Marion, Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, Leelee Sobieski, Billy Crudup, Giovanni Ribisi, and Stephen Dorff. This film is based on Bryan Burrough's book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI.

Plot:
The crime drama is set during The Great Depression with the focus on the FBI agent Melvin Purvis' attempt to stop criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd. Christian Bale will play FBI agent Purvis, Johnny Depp will play Dillinger, and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard will play Dillinger's girlfriend Billie Frechette. Principal photography began in Columbus, Wisconsin on March 17, 2008[1] and will continue in Chicago, Illinois and several places in Wisconsin until the end of June.[2] Some parts of the film will be shot in Crown Point, Indiana, the town where Dillinger escaped from jail.

Mulher: Você conhece a Edith Piaf?

Never in my life would I have guessed that i would be writing a blog, much less a blog entry with the title "Love by Cartier." But as I was doing a little research into the band Phoenix (more on them later) their website advertised a "Free Download" and, as you probably know, I'm a sucker for anything free and more of a sucker when that free thing is music. So I followed the link. To the Cartier website.

I was in a mild form of shock and a definite state of confusion. Because I was greeted by this website:

http://love.cartier.com/

It's not exactly what I was expecting. But it's always a pleasant experience to find more then you were expecting. In this case I was glad, because it led me to a whole CD (12 tracks, standard) of music for free download. And there are some really good songs on it. There are also films on the website, a link to the charity, and highlights of the new Cartier jewelry collection. I briefly viewed one of the films, but when I realized it was just an artsy, black and white excuse to promote the aforementioned new collection, I stopped. I can only take so much propaganda in one day, and that website was too much to begin with--as pretty looking as it is.

Back to the music: there are some incredibly great songs on that CD, and sadly the reason I was there, for the Phoenix single, was not the highlight. Well, really that's better news for me because it means I'm expanding my musical horizons. And I'm sorry this review isn't more in depth, but I keep falling asleep during my listening sessions. You try and see if you can get through the whole thing without at least getting a little droopy eyed.

"The Ground That We Stand On" by Hawksley Workman - In my opinion, the best song on the compilation. Unassuming, simple, delightful. A near perfect song. Wonderful lyrics, such as the lines where the title is derived: "The time that we keep wasting, like we don't know the pain we're called to bear. Oh the ground that we stand on won't long be there." It's a song that passes my ultimate test: relistenability. Unlike my favorite Weezer songs that I have to take a pause from, this I cannot get enough of, repeat listen after repeat listen. If you download one song from this website (though you should download them all) it should be this one.

"The Strong Ones" by Marion Cotillard - It's just one of those infectious ballads that you're kind of tempted to cry along with. Not really, but just a little. And sung by Marion Cotillard, the actress who (more than deservedly) won the Best Actress Oscar this year for her performance in the biopic of Edith Piaf, La Vie En Rose. And now she sings, and sings much better than other actress turned singers (such as the most recent disaster: Scarlett Johansson. Or even the disappointing Julie Delpy album.) This song is just sweet, a song for people in love (which is a pretty common theme if you haven't already guessed.)

"Love in This World" by Khalil Fong - how many soul and R&B performers do you really expect to come out of Hong Kong? Seriously? If you're impressed by that idea alone, you'll love the track. This very smooth Jack Johnson-esque track is sung in goodness knows which (or how many different) languages, and it's just so smooth, and so good.

"Drive Around Another Time and Stop" by Grand National - From the first seconds of this track I assumed I would hate it. It sounded like the overhead music I would expect to be in a Cartier store, or worse: the elevator music in the Cartier store. But I got over it. The over synthesized background isn't so bad, because ultimately these guys do know what they're doing, and they do make a good song out of it, regardless. At the very least, it's quite different, at least to my ears, and so somewhat exciting simply because of that.

"Twenty-One One Zero" by Phoenix - I'll highlight it, if only because it was the track that got me there in the first place. I do want to say it is a good song, it really is, but having listened to the rest of the Cartier compilation, I admit it is not my favorite. I was inspired by Phoenix's latest album "It's Never Been Like That" to seek out this new song in the first place, and I was initially surprised by the lack of lyrics throughout most of the song (not that they aren't there). As the Cartier website says of Phoenix's music: "a blend of youthful excitement and the mysterious science of the counterpoint." A fair and good description to this mysterious little song.

Ok, that's all. I'll stop there, lest I get carried away, and more critical as I get to the songs I don't like as much--like the weepy, voiceless, curious, but ultimately boring "Mor" by fennesz+sakamoto.

The other songs on the compilation are: "Liz and Jonny" by Dan Black, "Infinite Love" by Little Dragon, "The Power of the Heart" by Lou Reed, "Sur l'Ecorce" by Pauline Croze, "I Am Snow" by Sol Seppy, and "Everybody Knows" by Thomas Dybdahl.

However what I would like to impress upon you: Please download the track "The Ground That We Stand on" by Hawksley Workman. It's a great song.

Cotillard is good but they should have given her the Eiffel Tower not an Oscar–she would have been better is smaller doses. And her painted-on eyebrows, wiggling like worms up a huge hardboiled egg drove me nuts. This film is self-conscious, gimmicky and superficial. Don’t rent the DVD, buy a CD of Piaf and play that instead. There’s more drama in her voice than in any movie, even in one about her.

Valeu a pena.

Vejam a seguir alguns exemplos.

MOVED!

MOVED!

All my roommates have gone to sleep, because they have to get up for their internships tomorrow. I have cleverly decided to take my last week in LA off for some me slash paper-writing time, so I have no motivation to call it a night. Instead, I choose to sit in my living room, alone, with a book at my side, chatting on AIM and checking twitter every 5 minutes. Productive and healthy use of time, I feel.

There have been some gems of wisdom shelled out during my conversation with LA friend, Patrick, including: "41% of your daily fiber needs in just one artichoke fyi." At least I'm learning something.

This is what happens when I go home for any sort of vacation, too. I have no motivation to sleep, as I have nothing to get up for in the morning, so I stay up ridiculously late, alone, doing absolutely nothing. This then leads to me wasting my entire next day sleeping in until noon to make up for my lack of sleep. It's a dangerous pattern, and I end up getting bored and antsy. On top of that, I get mad at myself for accomplishing nothing during my days. Yet, during the semesters, when I'm busy and stressed, all I do is think about how much I want to go home, relax, and do nothing. Then when I'm sitting up til 3AM on my parents' couch watching reruns of "The Soup," I wish that I had a more interesting life. Why am I never satisfied?

This has quickly turned very philosophical. (See, I told you this would happen, and I'm not even home yet!) I promise this week will not all be me sitting around typing nonsense into the night. My friends and I have vowed to make this last week in LA awesome, especially after Grace, Jillian, and I finish and pitch our Business of Hollywood project tomorrow - an amazing remake of Roman Holiday staring James Marsden and Marion Cotillard. (Don't act like that wouldn't be amazing!) We have vowed to hit up every place we haven't been and do everything we haven't done. That most likely will not happen, but we have the motivation and the goal, so we will most likely get something accomplished. Cross your fingers for me. Maybe I really should be getting some sleep.
