C.C. and Marianne: The Background Mystery

1 of the biggest mysteries surrounding Code Geass is the relationship between C.C. and Marianne, aka Lelouch's mother. In season 1, C.C. appears to have conversations with spiritual entities. During the duration of the season, it is hinted that the entity she is conversing with is the Queen Marianne, Lelouch's mother. This revelation has caused much discussion by fans. Is C.C. able to reach through time? Is C.C. a ghost whisperer? Or is C.C. just plain loony?

Code Geass R2, Episode 15

With episode 15, some blanks have been filled in. It is shown that Marianne and C.C. do know each other and have a relationship, though the nature of the relationship is not defined. It is also shown that the vi Brittannia twins, Charles and V.V., also know C.C. and also her history as the Geass cult leader. This accounts for Charles' research into Geass ruins and reveals the connection between V.V, C.C. and Charles. In a way, it also reveals the inner workings of Geass and the true nature of the Geass contract. The Geass contract fulfills 1 innermost desire, but the manner of fulfillment is twisted. For Charles, it is the power of truth. He thus gains the power to manipulate memory, i.e. he changes the truth as people understand it. For Mao, he wished to understand other humans, thus gaining the power to read minds. That power eventually drove him mad. For Lelouch, it is power that he sought and control freak that he is, he gained a power over people: The power to compel any order, no matter how disagreeable it is. It is not shown within the show what Rolo's wish was, though some speculations can be made. This manner of wish fulfillment is similar to the old parable of how the Devil(or djinn in ancient times) can fulfill any wish, but in exchange he drives a bargain for the wisher's soul. The story then goes on to describe how the devil then twists the wisher's dream about till it becomes a living nightmare. The parallels drawn between the 2 tales are interesting both in the nature of comparison, but also in their implications for the characters involved.

Queen Marianne: Pivotal figure in History

In many ways, Queen Marianne is the central character of the series. Considering she had zero screentime beyond flashbacks (she was killed before the chronology of the show started), she had a profound impact on the parallel world of Code Geass. If one were to plot the chain of events backwards in time, most of them will have their beginnings at Marianne's death. Queen Marianne's death was the impetus for the chain of events that led to the present circumstances, and the driving force behind many characters' actions. Milly's family went intro disgrace following Marianne's death, which led them to Nippon and the creation of the Ashford Academy. It is the source of Jeremiah's fanaticism and loyalty. For Lelouch, it is the pivotal factor for his raison d'etre, besides safeguarding Nunally's future.

Queen Marianne: The previous Contractor?

It can be seen that everyone involved in C.C.'s past was either a contractor, or another entity involved in Geass. Mao, Charles, V.V, Lelouch, Rolo, Bartley. The only "exception" is Marianne. Or is it? It can be speculated that Marianne is in fact 1 of C.C.'s contractors. It would explain her prodigious rise to power from a mere commoner. Marianne the Flash takes on new meaning once you consider that Rolo's Geass ability does indeed, make him appear to move in a "flash".

Marianne's "role" as Geass contractor would also cast new light on her death/murder. In any story with a tight script, it is often necessary to have a character play multiple roles because introducing a character loosens the focus of the storytelling which makes the narrative appear very unbelievable. It is for this reason that whodunnits are written around a small cast of "suspect" characters who just coincidentally are gathered together during the murder. If a perfect stranger were to be introduced as the murderer at the end, the story fails as a compelling piece of narrative. Similarly in Code Geass, a character that previously had no motive to kill Marianne, now does. And because of his position/power, he also has the means by which to murder Marianne.

Conclusions.

There is little proof that Marianne is a contractor. That is because we just know too little about anything related to both C.C. and Marianne. Even though episode 15 answers some questions, it also raises many more questions than it answers. But 1 thing is for certain; episodes 21-26 will delve into the history of Geass and C.C. and will answer, once and for all, the truth behind Marianne's murder on that fateful day.

This year July 14 fell on Monday. Earlier this week in otherwise crowded place with lots cars and people rushing to and off work everybody could celebrate this national holiday together with French right in front of the local brasserie Les Halles [lezal]. For an illustration of the unforgettable atmosphere of the Bastille Day imagine a day fulfilled by races of both waiters trying to balance with bottles and glasses of champagne and kids running around with the plates of French fries while silently eating up some of their crispy burden. Imagine a day full of celebration of French pride, the multicultural background with the presence of disguised figures of Statue of Liberty, Marianne (symbol of French) held in the early afternoon in a shade of the ubiquitous blue-white-red tricolored baloons' reflections and all of it overlooked by the majestic Capitol towering above the rest of all buildings standing nearby.

The power of imagination is surely very strong, lucky enough these days we also have a powerful technology that can capture these moments for us.  Through this blog, I would like to share some of the strongest moments that I managed to capture this Monday with you...

Avant même de le rencontrer, ce qui frappe chez Fabrice Hervieu-Wane, c'est son nom. Un nom franco-sénégalais pour un journaliste né et grandi dans l'Hexagone, c'est intriguant. "Je porte le nom de ma femme [qui est sénégalaise]. Nos enfants sont voués à avoir deux cultures. Ce double nom qu'ils portent c'est comme un étendard". Un étendard de leur métissage, que Fabrice Hervieu-Wane pourrait lui-même incarner, si ce n'était la blancheur de sa peau. Pour Myriam, de la librairie des Quatre Vents de Mermoz, où a eu lieu la séance de dédicace du livre, le journaliste "est très sénégalais". Lui répond "c'est très sympa" et le prend pour un compliment. Dakar, sur laquelle il vient de publier un livre, il y vient depuis quinze ans, y vit depuis trois. Le Sénégal c'est "un peu [son] deuxième pays".

Rien ne le prédisposait pourtant à prendre racine au pays des baobabs. Né en France il y a près de 40 ans, il intègre le Cfj, (centre de formation des journalistes à Paris), après un Dea d'histoire. A sa sortie de l'école, il est embauché à Phosphore, mensuel pour adolescents. La rédaction lance un sujet sur la polygamie, il se propose pour le faire et s'envole pour le Bénin, où il s'immerge pour quelque temps dans une famille de Porto Novo. Il confesse une attirance de longue date pour l'Afrique de l'Ouest. Les motifs? "Il y a des choses que l'on n'explique pas. J'ai dû être noir dans une autre vie".

Il revient pourtant dans la blanche Europe pour un moment. Son expérience à Phosphore dure cinq ans. Puis une période de free lance le fait pigiste au Monde de l'éducation et à l’hebdomadaire Marianne. Il s'adonne alors à l'une de ses marottes : l'éducation. "Je suis très fier de ce que j'ai fait à Marianne : des enquêtes de dix pages, notamment sur le système éducatif français. C'était très fouillé alors que l'on passe son temps à survoler les choses". Puis il devient rédacteur à L'Ecole des Parents, "une revue intello à tirage très confidentiel", ironise-t-il dans un sourire.

Et puis un beau jour de l'an 2000 sa femme, sénégalaise donc, est nommée à Abidjan. Retour sur la terre de ses ancêtres d'une autre vie. 2003 le ramène à Paris; deux ans plus tard il s'installe à Dakar. "Je me sens en affinité avec les Sénégalais, explique-t-il. Ce sont des personnes qui aiment l'échange, qui sont curieuses des autres et qui s'engagent. Ce sont des qualités que j'aime." Etre français résident en Afrique pourrait pourtant ne pas être chose aisée. Avec un passé de colonisatrice, la France a induit des rapports parfois viciés. Mais aux yeux de Fabrice Hervieu-Wane, le Sénégal est différent des autres pays du continent. "Dans certains autres pays d'Afrique, il y a une déférence par rapport aux Français, le signe d'un passé colonial mal digéré. Au Sénégal, de manière générale, je trouve les gens attachés à leur ‘sénégalité’ et les rapports sont plus clairs. J'ai l'illusion de croire que j'ai un rapport sain avec eux."

Fossoyeur de préjugés

Afin que tout le monde puisse avoir avec le Sénégal ce rapport sain, il s'agissait de faire tomber les préjugés. L'amour de Fabrice Hervieu Wane pour l'éducation induit chez lui une volonté pédagogique. Elle s'exprime pleinement dans son dernier ouvrage : Dakar l'insoumise. "Il y a trois types d'idées reçues que je voulais faire tomber : la tarte à la crème du ‘Sénégal inventif’, celle de l'hospitalité, et puis de la débrouillardise. C'est bien plus compliqué. Et puis le discours de Dakar a beaucoup choqué ici [discours prononcé par Nicolas Sarkozy en juillet 2007 où il disait que "l' homme africain n'est pas assez entré dans l'histoire", ndlr]. Ces vingt-six personnalités que je décris, et bien d'autres derrière, prouvent que les Africains entrent dans l'histoire.’ C'est un livre pour expliquer l'Afrique à ceux qui continuent de se méprendre.

C'est aussi une sorte d'appel aux hommes de pouvoir sénégalais, entre accusation et prière. "C'est presque plus adressé à la classe politique sénégalaise elle-même, pour lui dire qu'il y a mille talents et qu'ils ne l'ont pas attendue. Ces gens dont je parle se sont faits tous seuls. L'Etat ne les aide pas. Le Cesti [école de journalisme rattachée à l'université de Dakar] n'a pas de subvention par exemple. Ce n'est pas normal : c'est une école publique.’

Qu'une école de journalisme manque de moyens hérisse sans doute tout particulièrement cet homme de presse. Au sujet des Médias, tant sénégalais que français, il est intarissable. Pour tout autre domaine, son optimisme déborde. Sur le journalisme, il ne se lasse de critiquer l'esprit moutonnier, les moyens dérisoires, les logiques de complaisance, l'absence d'enquêtes. ‘C'est hyper frustrant, souffle-t-il. Mais je suis sans doute plus exigeant dans ce secteur-là parce que c'est le mien’.

Alors conjuguant ces exigences, son amour pour l'Afrique et sa fièvre pédagogique, l'un de ses projets est éventuellement d'enseigner, en Afrique, sur le décryptage des médias. Mais enfin il compte aussi faire un tour au Canada ‘très en avance dans le domaine’, continuer d'écrire, d'interroger le monde. Un avenir tout en couleurs, pour cet homme qui a su mêler le noir au blanc.

Is it just me, or did Milly lose her boobs? Maybe she loses them when she mourns.

My number two most hated in Code Geass. I don't know why. The first time I saw his face and I heard his voice, I got pissed off. LOL. I just so love seeing him in pain.

Another gay so in love with Lelouch's persona that just can't take the fact that he is Zero. He now takes the number 3 spot in my most hated list after Rolo and VV for the mere fact that he is trying to take Kallen away.

How I missed Kallen and her booby pair. Good thing she is back on the spotlight.

Shirley, whose fate was twisted by Geass, died because of Geass. In grief of her death, Lelouch decides to annihilate the indirect cause, the organization which studys Geass- The Geass Cult.
With the information from Rolo and Jeremiah, he found out the Cult's headquarter and charges with the Black Knights.
The person waiting inside is the young leader of the Cult, who has immortal powers same as C.C., and is the older brother of the Emperor of Britannia, V.V.

Turn 15- The World Of C「C の　世界」 , July 20th
In the middle of the battle with V.V., Lelouch is transferred to the mysterious World of C of the mystery. He has to fight with the enemy who has powers beyond all knowledge. When Lelouch is in a desperate situation, the one who shows up before him is...

The ending song was not that enjoyable for me but the angelic Clamp trademark animation is excellent.

And second, so many things happened. JUST SO MANY!!! And I can't help but feel sad about this episode.

The whole episode revolves around Shirley whose memories have returned. It was so like her memorial day. But first off, we have Orange-kun attacking Ashford, cancelling Rolo's geass while CAUGHT in it and having an awesome fight scene with ninja/maid Sayoko. And thanks to Jason [edit: Jason says in his later post it was Ruffles, but Ruffles say it was an anonymous pervert], I was not able to miss the superb panty shot that comes with the action scene.

At the same time, V.V. and Cornelia meet in the Order hallway. This scene just showed that V.V. is an immortal or I may say cannot be killed by ordinary means and that Cornelia seems to have gotten some rest before R2 since she seems way hotter now.

Afterward, Lelouch, Shirley and Suzaku meet while Lulu is testing his anti-Sakuradite train and while Shirley is trying to tell Suzaku that Lulu is Zero. And then, Shirley goes into a fit and falls. For one moment, I thought she would already go into a worthless death.

And here goes Orange-kun facing off with Lelouch. And poof! Orange-kun suddenly confesses his lust loyalty to Empress Marianne (Lelouch's mom). And so now, Orange-kun is part of the Black Knights.

Finally, there is the Shirley x Rolo match-up. How stupid of Shirley to pick the line "And his sister Nunnally as well." But, just WTF is that gay brother thinking to kill Shirley just like that. It made me want to kick his ass and slice him the way Sekai was minced by Kotonoha. Now, I am one swimsuit fanservice short. Damn Rolo!

Shirley meeting up with Lulu before her death was a very toching moment. At some point, I was really hoping that Lulu's geass would take effect and make Shirley live. I think I replayed Shirley's lines to Lulu about 7 more times after I finished the episode. It says:

"No matter how many time I'm reborn, I'm sure I'll fall in love with you again."

If Lelouch didn't have this emo facial distortion, I would have dumped him in the garbage together with his gay sister brother wannabe.

We first see our Marianne in painting by Delecroix. She wears her chic little Phrygian cap but no chemise. Why not? I do not know. She is a very, very funny lady. The drapeau tricolor (three-color drapes) she holds up and she shouts, "Liberté, égalité, fraternité!" ("Liberality, Legality, Fertility!") Then she leaps like nimble goat over the barricades. Later she does not shout too much and she puts on more clothes. Sometimes she puts on cap, sometimes no.

All of Les Miserables (the miserables) do love Marianne so because she leads to glory and she is very, very funny. Ho ho. You would like her very much. Also, too, we must admit, do we not, she is so much better symbol than le coq gaulois (the Gallic chicken). What can I say? Hein? Chicken. Woman. What is there to choose between, eh?

Volksmusik-Stars Marianne & Michael im BILD.de-Interview

Rüpel-Rapper Bushido kann bei den Stars der Volksmusik wenig Punkte sammeln. Michael: „Es ist unbegreiflich, dass der Staat nicht eingreift. Ich bin gegen Zensur, aber es kann nicht sein, dass jemand so viel Geld mit solchen Texten verdient. Das geht nicht!“

Lieber Michael, es geht, siehst du doch. Der Staat wird nicht eingreifen, da er sich mehr für die Steuereinnahmen interessiert, als für menschenverachtende, gewaltverherrlichende und schwulenfeindliche Songtexte.

Jeder normale fühlende, denkende und handelnde Mensch sage: 'Das ist krank! Wenn Bushido ein Problem mit sich selbst hat, dann soll er zum Psychiater oder Psychologen gehen, aber bitte nicht auf die Bühne.'

Diesen Ausspruch solltest du nochmal überdenken, Michael. Meiner Meinung nach ist unser halbsüdländischer Freund ein eiskalter, agressiver Drogendealer Ex-Drogendealer, der erkannt hat, wie man unserer glohreichen, total verblödeten Jugend am besten das Geld aus der Tasche ziehen kann.

Fazit:

Wenn also jemand zum Psychiater muss, dann sind es ein paar Millionen Jugendliche.

Vi tog en promenad ner till sjöstan för att kolla på hennes nyköpta lägenhet som hon ska flytta till i februari.

Marianne hade gjort iordning picknick med mackor, muffins, jordgubbar och isté, mumsfillibabba!

Jag vart sjukt sugen på att flytta till sjöstan. Men då vill jag bo precis med brygga utanför, gärna en båt, annars får det va ;)

Hittade även en tröja med My Melody på. Den filuren hade jag på saker när jag va liten. Den är så himla söt!

Nuestras sospechas se confirmaron en esta semana, y varios medios (Celebrity Baby Blog, Daily Telegraph, Revista Pronto, Coldplaying) nos dieron la gran noticia de que nuestro baterista favorito ¿? fué padre de mellizos, Juno (nena) y Rex (varón), el día Miércoles 7 de Mayo.

A pesar de que Ava ya tenía con quiénes jugar (Apple, Violet, Moses, Nico, etc.), siempre es bueno que haya más miembros en la familia y que esta se agrande (pero no tanto como los celos entre hermanos)...

Y sin nada más que decir sobre los milagros de la vida, nos retiramos diciendo...

En prolongement de l'Appel du 14 février, "Pour une vigilance républicaine", l'hebdomadaire Marianne a décidé d'organiser quatre soirées-débat dans quatre grandes villes de province (Marseille,Nancy, Lille et Rennes).

Pour ce qui concerne Nancy, le débat aura lieu mardi à 20h à l'amphithéâtre Stanislas du Palais des Congrès (rue du Grand Rabbin Haguenauer -entrée libre) et aura pour thème " l'indépendance de la politique étrangère de la France".
Outre Jean François Kahn, ce débat aura comme intervenant Pierre Moscovici et Régis Debray. Laurent Neumann, directeur de la rédaction de Marianne animera ce débat.
Le Mouvement des Jeunes Socialistes de Meurthe-et-Moselle y sera présent et vous invite à prendre part à ce débat.
