Hot Mom Makes Olympic Team- Hot mom and world-class swimmer Dara Torres broke an American record on Friday while earning a spot on her fifth consecutive Olympic team.   At 41 she has done what most would have termed impossible since retiring (for the second time, no less) after the 2000 games: bear a child, get diagnosed with asthma, go through recent knee and shoulder surgeries, and arrive at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials posting faster times than in her mid-20s. Yet, when she touched a wall in the 100-meter freestyle Friday night, she squinted at digits that seemed downright impossible. Torres qualified for the Olympic team by edging out a 25-year-old Natalie Coughlin by five one hundredths of a second – 53.78 to 53.83 – in an event in which Coughlin holds the American record.  Knowing that fact, Dara Torres spent part of Friday night shrugging off the doubt that is bound to settle on her chiseled shoulders over the next two months.  At 41 years old and having qualified for her fifth Olympic team, the marble-physiqued Torres now owns potentially the most intriguing feel-good story line this side of Michael Phelps.  And with it, she also has materialized as the Olympian most likely to bear the brunt of suspicious success in the post-BALCO era.  Certainly the suspicions will come, even with Torres taking part in a special U.S. Anti-Doping Agency program called Project Believe. Framed as USADA’s most vigorous testing regimen, Torres says her involvement has led to her blood and urine having been tested “12 to 15 times” since March.  "I’m so used to it now that it’s not even an issue,” Torres said of the doping suspicions that have dogged her in this latest Olympic comeback. “I just got drug tested and I can’t see them not coming out and at least blood testing me with that pilot program I’m involved with. That’s fine. Like I said (before), anyone who makes any accusations I take as a compliment" (Sports: Hot Mom Makes Olympic Team).  Unfortunately for Torres, she’s carving out new territory in unforgiving terrain. Not only is she struggling against an abyss of cynicism created by a federal BALCO doping investigation (which implicated several Olympic athletes), her win comes off some strong remarks from Olympic gold medalist Gary Hall Jr. Hall expressed disgust with USADA earlier this week, suggesting that it is federal investigations – not Olympic drug testing – that are catching unscrupulous cheats.  So, now we're seeing steroids cross over into a sport where the only talent is paddling like a drowning dog at ridiculous speeds and looking good in a Speedo?  Somehow this one brings back questions of the physically fit East German teams from the 1980s, or was it the West Germans, where the men were men, and so were half of the women.  They were all supreme physical mutations from some sort of chemically induced trip, but that was a different time.  Despite gloomy shouts of cheating in the new era of roid abuse, Torres is what could be the best shape of her life, and she's out to prove to the sports world that 40 year olds can still compete at a very high level.  Plus, she's really hot, and she has a kid to boot.  How many 40 year old women with kids can look so good and still be making the headlines in a grueling physical sport?  Doesn't matter, and the negative drug rests prove it.  If you're looking for a story on a doping scandal, give Floyd Landis' agent a call.  Neither one of them have anything to do, so let's put the steroid issue to bed for a while.  It's Olympic times folks and whether you like it or not, Dara Torres is on the team.  For the record, she can play Marco Polo in my pool any day.

Existen mil y un motivos para escribir en la actualidad sobre China, así que este artículo apenas precisa de presentación. No obstante, como siempre viene bien explicar el porqué de las cosas, les diré que he escogido este momento con motivo de los próximos Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín. A continuación trato de analizar, de forma sintética y general, la Historia de ese país entre comienzos del XIX y mediados del XX. Pongo punto y final a mi relato con el triunfo del comunismo maoísta en China; aunque no descarto completar ese repaso histórico en artículos futuros.

China a comienzos del XIX: política interior y exterior

A comienzos del siglo XIX China era, como en la actualidad, un enorme país que contaba con un gran potencial demográfico. Sin embargo, ese gigante oriental era víctima de la inercia marcada por su centenaria tradición y por las élites gobernantes. Mientras el mundo occidental vivía un intenso proceso de urbanización e industrialización, China era un país de campesinos, compuesto por un sinfín de pequeñas y grandes aldeas; apenas existían ciudades que, desde luego, no eran como las europeas. Esa sociedad rural era relativamente homogénea; tan sólo destacaba del común un pequeño grupo aristocrático al que, debido al inmovilismo existente, era muy difícil acceder.

En Pekín, una de las pocas urbes a las que nos referíamos anteriormente, vivía el emperador con su séquito y los miembros de la administración estatal. El gobernante, para escarnio de algunos habitantes del país, pertenecía a una dinastía extranjera de origen manchú [3]. No obstante, la labor de gobierno, donde destacaba la figura de los mandarines, era relativamente eficaz. Estos, al igual que la mayor parte de la población china, recelaban de la presencia mercantil y militar extranjera que, a lo largo del siglo XIX, se fue haciendo más abrumadora.

La primera apertura de China a las exigencias comerciales de esos países –exceptuando, claro está, las tímidas relaciones establecidas desde los viajes de Marco Polo- se produjo en Cantón, y los beneficiados fueron los británicos. Posteriormente, el Tratado de Nankín puso fin a la llamada Guerra del Opio, que enfrentó a los chinos con el Imperio de la Reina Victoria entre 1839 y 1842 [4]. Según las cláusulas del mismo, los vencedores adquirían el derecho a comerciar en cinco puertos de China, uno de ellos a orillas del Yang Tse Kiang. Además, se otorgaba un estatuto especial para Hong Kong. En este mismo periodo también Francia y los EE.UU. lograron arrancar concesiones al receloso gobierno oriental. Había dado comienzo el reparto de la “tarta china” que tan bien caricaturizaron a finales de siglo los dibujantes de la prensa europea. Estas concesiones fueron ampliadas a estas y otras potencias con motivo de la larga insurrección de los Taiping, donde los occidentales tomaron postura en favor de estos o del gobierno en función de sus propios intereses [4].

Estancamiento y crisis en China.

La, en cierto modo violenta, incursión comercial de Occidente provocó un generalizado rechazo -en ocasiones rozando lo cómico- hacia todo lo relacionado con los “invasores”; incluido el desarrollo de estos. Y, por si fuera poco, la fidelidad a la civilización tradicional china no ayudó precisamente a superar estos prejuicios. Mientras el poder imperial se iba poco a poco descomponiendo, el territorio fue dividiéndose en feudos controlados por los “señores de la guerra”. Sin embargo, no todo eran desgracias para el pueblo chino. En los puertos abiertos al comercio, lugares donde se concentraban los principales intereses europeos y norteamericanos, se fueron formando enclaves de desarrollo económico. Fruto de la acumulación de población que huía de la pobreza rural, se levantaron grandes ciudades; lugares que sirvieron como catalizadores de las nuevas ideas.

La manifestación más clara del retraso de China la encontramos en el control que su vecino nipón empieza a tener sobre ella. Japón se convierte, al igual que las potencias occidentales, en “señor” de los destinos chinos tras derrotar al gigante asiático en la Guerra de Corea. La victoria japonesa tuvo consecuencia territoriales y comerciales para la propia China, de las que también procuraron sacar partido los europeos. Sin embargo, el temor de estos últimos a que el expansionismo japonés pusiera en peligro sus intereses comerciales, les llevó a apoyar al más débil. De esta manera, la nueva potencia fuerte –Japón- no pudo sacar de su victoria todas las concesiones que deseaba.

Las sucesivas derrotas y humillaciones facilitaron el surgimiento de sociedades secretas que actuaban contra los intereses del gobierno, de los señores, y de las propias potencias occidentales. Esas organizaciones constituyeron el germen de la “revuelta de los boxers”, ante cuyas reclamaciones los emperadores no tuvieron más remedio que ceder. Tan sólo la intervención occidental en pleno cambio de siglo impidió que los radicales chinos se hicieran con todo el poder. Las potencias, que por supuesto descartaban la posibilidad de colonizar territorialmente China –era demasiado extensa y llevaba asociada consigo demasiados problemas-, se limitaron a obtener nuevas garantías y privilegios una vez finalizado el conflicto.

Las revoluciones chinas.

La crítica situación que vivía China obligó a la emperatriz Tseu-Hi a aceptar el programa reformista propuesto por la nueva clase de hombres de negocios que había surgido en el país [3]. Estos impulsaron un proceso de desarrollo basado en prácticas económicas de tipo moderno, que vino acompañado de una reforma del Ejercito y del funcionariado, y por la promulgación de una Constitución. Además, se abandonaron muchas de las antiguas tradiciones, de entre las que destaca el culto a la figura divina imperial. Esto, junto con el aumento del número de funcionarios y altos cargos antidinásticos, debilitaron la posición de la familia imperial.

En 1912, tras la caída de la dinastía reinante Sun Yat Sen se convirtió en el primer presidente de la República China. Este personaje había elaborado unos años antes una teoría política en la que defendía el nacionalismo antimanchú, el antiimperialismo, la democracia y el socialismo. Sin embargo, su ineficacia en la lucha contra los imperiales y los “señores de la guerra”, a la que se unió la anarquía existente dentro del propio territorio republicano acabaron propiciando el relevo en la presidencia; Sun Yat Sen fue sustituido por Yuan Che-kai.

Al término de la Gran Guerra (1914-1918), los acuerdo de paz acabaron por legitimar la ocupación japonesa de varios territorios del Pacífico, incluidos algunos pertenecientes a China. Este hecho, unido a la inercia desastrosa que arrastraba el gigante asiático desde comienzos del XIX, volvió a sumir al país en una profunda crisis. Tras el periodo de caos, en 1927 el Kuomintang asumió el poder. La tranquilidad se prolongo durante un breve periodo de cuatro años, en los cuales este grupo mantuvo unidos en su seno a nacionalistas, socialistas y demócratas. La ruptura del pacto con los comunistas marcó el inicio de un nuevo periodo de crisis. Las luchas entre “señores de la guerra” volvieron a asolar el territorio chino, al tiempo que Japón invadía Manchuria en 1931. Con este panorama interno China iba a enfrentarse al convulso periodo bélico de finales de los años treinta y principios de los cuarenta. En 1937 iniciaba una guerra con Japón que, enlazando con los II Guerra Mundial, no tocó a su fin hasta el años 1945 [1]. La nación china sufrió grandes pérdidas en el conflicto, fue humillada en numerosas ocasiones, pero gracias a la victoria aliada salió triunfadora en la conflagración.

El final victorioso sobre Japón en la guerra de 1937-1945 no acabó de apaciguar los ánimos en China. La división dentro del Koumintang tras la ruptura protagonizada por los comunistas de Mao Tse-Tung, llevó al ejército de este a enfrentarse con el gobierno de Chang Kai-Shek [5]. La guerra civil china duró cuatro años (1945-1949). En ella los comunistas, con apoyo de la URSS, se alzaron con la victoria. Los nacionalistas huyeron del territorio continental, constituyendo un gobierno en el exilio en la isla de Taiwán (Formosa) bajo la protección y el reconocimiento de los EE.UU. Desde entonces existen dos estado que reclaman la herencia china: uno comunista en el continente, y otro nacionalista en la isla.

I'm gonna teach you about rats today, but first things first. Thanks for posting your email address on my pot pie blog's comments for the world to see. That was a risky move so I responded in kind, and my bassist, ever the pragmatist, emailed me to warn of spammers so I took them down. After a lengthy email exchange with you about the price of airport snacks, I met Lackey for lunch and we went on a wild goose chase for books about things I don't understand.

While on this wild goose chase, I came across an encyclopedia set entitled The Wonderland Of Knowledge, A Pictorial Pageant. The set was published in 1938 and I wanted it bad. But since we were on foot, I could only buy one. So I got Volume 10: PEA-SAN for 25 cents.

When I got home, I started reading the Encyclopedia. It's awesome. It's written completely weird and it's delightfully outdated, and everything seems to be editorialized. There's no real information. Here are some actual excerpts for your enjoyment:

PINEAPPLE PACKING: Machines remove most of the outside coat, then the fruits are carefully trimmed by girls.

That's all there is to this entry. Accompanying it is a picture of women in hairnets trimming pineapples on a factory conveyor belt. Fascinating.

POLO, MARCO: Because two men once took a youth to China, all Europe stirred from its sleep to answer the call of far-off pagoda bells and bring back the riches of the East. The three Polos went to Persia in the company of a Mongolian Princess.

Well, I'll be. Thank god I now know why I play that game in swimming pools. WTF? And for the record, "The company of a Mongolian Princess" has now replaced "Traveling Bard to Follow Me and Record My Deeds in Song" as my Life Priority List Topper.

Billy. Tapping shoes on a table has now joined the ranks of "highly specialized crafts." Wanna run away with me and go to Foley Artist school? It sounds, like, sooooooo easy, and stuff.

PLANTS: Every person in the world is vitally interested in plants. One person may declare he is only interested in books, another may marvel as a farmer at grains, but either would acknowledge he could not exist for even a brief time without plants.

Hmmm. Books come from trees and grains are plants. I think there is more to say about plants. I dunno. Maybe these guys covered it all. Maybe I was wrong.

PUMPKIN: No one has ever discovered a definite rule for separating pumpkins from squash. A common field pumpkin would not be mistaken for a squash. Pumpkins are used for Jack-O-Lanterns and pies.

True. Pumpkins were not declared squashes until the birth of Wikipedia. This writer obviously disapproves of anything squash-related and will do everything in his power to separate his beloved pumpkins from being branded with the squash label. Very valiant.

And here's my very favorite. But before I go into it, take a look at the picture below, and its caption. It's all you need to know about raspberries:

And now, my favorite. You'll notice the picture above of the rat gazing longingly at the Raspberries. That's because "RAT" is the next entry, and the most editorialized of all. It goes a little something like this:

RAT: Death and destruction follow the trail of the rat. Every year, millions of dollars worth of eggs, meats, and small domestic animals such as rabbits and baby chicks are destroyed by this pest. Vicious fighters, they often kill and eat one another, and have been known to ATTACK AND KILL pigs, calves, and even MEN. White rats bear none of the characteristics of the hated brown rat and are perfectly harmless and may be kept as pets. Dogs, cats, poisons and traps are fairly effective as rat-killers, but the best means of control is the construction of rat-proof buildings.

Oh. My. God. Where to start? I feel like the dude who wrote this entry got up in the morning to go to work and found a rat gnawing on his toothbrush and shitting in his tea and he got SO pissed that he was like, "GODDAMMIT I'M WRITING ABOUT THOSE VILE RATS TODAY." He's okay with white rats, because those ones don't kill pigs and men. And forget about the fact that those pests will kill something as big as your cow babies, too, just sic your little puppy dog on 'em, unless of course you have figured out a way to construct a RAT-PROOF moat around your house.

I am having so much fun with this book. Tomorrow I will go get the rest of the set. I think I may start an oft-updated sidebar column in my blog, something like "My Favorite Encyclopedia Post This Week."

Di capo a tre giornate, andando verso mezzodì, l'uomo s'incontra ad Anastasia, città bagnata da canali concentrici e sorvolata da aquiloni. Dovrei ora enumerare le merci che qui si comprano con vantaggio: agata onice crisopazio e altre varietà di calcedonio; lodare la carne del fagiano dorato che si cucina sulla fiamma di legno di ciliegio stagionato e si cosparge con molto origano; dire delle donne che ho visto fare il bagno nella vasca d'un giardino e che talvolta invitano - si racconta - il passeggero a spogliarsi con loro e rincorrerle nell'acqua. Ma con queste notizie non ti direi la vera essenza della città: perchè mentre la descrizione di Anastasia non fa che risvegliare i desideri uno per volta per obbligarti a soffocarli, a chi si trova un mattino in mezzo ad Anastasia i desideri si risvegliano tutti insieme e ti circondano. La città ti appare come un tutto in cui nessun desiderio va perduto e di cui tu fai parte, e poichè essa gode tutto quello che tu non godi, a te non resta che abitare questo desiderio ed esserne contento. Tale potere, che ora dicono maligno ora benigno, ha Anastasia, città ingannatrice: se per otto ore al giorno tu lavori come tagliatore d'agate onici crisopazi, la tua fatica che dà forma al desiderio prende dal desiderio la sua forma, e tu credi di godere per tutta Anastasia mentre non ne sei che lo schiavo.

The Chinese had Fa-Hien, the Arabs Al-Baruni, the Africans Ibn Batuta and the Europeans Marco Polo - world famous travellers all, who put their respective lands on the travelling map of the ancient world. In this melee of ancient international travel, India stood aloof. No one from India travelled or explored. Maybe some like the sea-farers of the west coast did - but no one wrote about it and certainly no one became famous. Nope, we never had our 'travellers'. Ancient Indian (read : Indo-gangetic, brahminical) texts talk of becoming a mleccha (an impure person) upon crossing a sea. Maybe this was the reason - but in any case, Travel in ancient India was not a cool thing to do,

Funnily enough, the other way for people to discover lands in ancient times was by marching off for conquest. In antiquity, the Mongols did it in Asia, the Romans & the Greeks in Europe - conquest of foreign lands was certainly cool for most of the world. But except for a brief period when India's eastern kingdoms used their maritime power to spread the Indian idiom to East Asia, India has not done much conquest abroad. We seemed to have been pretty caught up with ourselves.

Strange as it may sound, India's most powerful 'conqueror' of antiquity was probably Gautama Buddha, who brought the entire peoples of China, Japan & much of Asia under his sway. And his credo was, 'don't kill anything, not even an insect!'

As I do more travelling, exploring & writing, I am starting to sense a real opportunity here. All I have to do is to travel a lot (not too difficult), write about it (do-able) and get famous enough for everyone to know my name after 500 years (ahem..). If I can do that, I will be the first Indian 'traveller' which means a historical minority of One.

Nie byłoby w tym nic wyjątkowego, gdy przed nim „jedwabnym szlakiem” docierało tam już wielu europejskich kupców, Marco trafił jednak na sam dwór ówczesnego cesarza Chin, gdzie bawił dobrych 17 lat. Nijaki Rusticello opisał potem jego przygody w książce „Odkrywanie świata", ktorez to dzielo stało sie inspiracja dla pokoleń przyszłych podróżników. Tak rozpoczęło sie odkrywanie liczącej przeszło 4 tys. lat cywilizacji chińskiej przez Europę.

Azja pod zaborami Europy

Chiny z opisów Marco Polo przewyższały średniowieczną Europę cywilizacyjnie i kulturowo. Nic więc dziwnego, że chińscy władcy – tak po zetknięciu z Europejczykami czy z mieszkańcami Afryki czy Azji Mniejszej - rządzili w przekonaniu, że Chiny są mocarstwem samowystarczalnym i najdoskonalszym z możliwych. Przekonanie to - być może słuszne jeszcze w czasach europejskiego renesansu – stało się jednak w XIX wieku przyczynkiem do upadku Chin. W momencie gdy Europa przechodziła fazę dynamicznej rewolucji przemysłowej, Chiny zupełnie odcięły się od wpływów zachodnich, uważając, że Zachód, tak jak kiedyś, tak i teraz, nie ma im tak naprawdę nic do zaoferowania (sto lat wcześniej z podobnego założenia wychodzili władcy Polski, która w XIX wieku z podzieliła los większości krajów Azji, tracąc niepodległośc na rzecz europejskich, nowoczesnych mocarstw). Przebudzeniem ze snu o ponadwiekowej wielkości okazały się dla Chińczyków dwie wojny opiumowe w XIX wieku, podczas których wojska Wielkiej Brytanii i Francji bez najmniejszego trudu rozgromiły zacofaną armię chińską, czyniąc Chiny krajem praktycznie zależnym od siebie. (Dla Polaków podobnym przebudzeniem okazały się rozbiory). Mimo poniżenia przez obce europejskie armie, Chiny dalej trwały w zacofaniu cywilizacyjnym w stosunku do Zachodu i dopiero w XX wieku przystąpiono tam do koniecznych reform. Ignorancja Zachodu ustąpiła miejsca nadgorliwości w kopiowaniu jego wzorców a sam stosunek Chińczyków do białych nabrał ambiwalentnego znaczenia – z jednej strony podziwu, z drugiej: zawiści i nieufności. Chińczycy postanowili odbić sobie XIX wieczne upokorzenia nie tyle bezpośrednią militarną konfrontacją z Zachodem, co metodycznym zdobywaniem strategicznych przyczółków zachodnich na polu gospodarczym.

Tymczasem jeszcze we wspomnianym XIX wieku mocarstwa europejskie krok po kroku przejmowały władzę nad całą Azją, czyniąc z jej krain podległe sobie kolonie. I tak - Francji przypadły Indochiny (współcześnie Laos, Kambodża i Wietnam). Indie, Birma i Malezja - Wielkiej Brytanii. Indonezja - Holandii. Filipiny - Hiszpanii. Jedynym krajem Dalekiego Wschodu niezależnym wówczas od Zachodu była Japonia, gdzie - niemal w tym samym czasie, co w Europie – zaczęła rodzić się koncepcja wyższości rasowej i kulturowej nad ościennymi ludami. Z przekonaniem o wyższości swej rasy nad innymi Japończycy zajęli Koreę oraz część Chin, w tym Tajwan, stając się podobnie jak kolonizatorzy europejscy postrachem, ale jednocześnie obiektem szacunku podbitej ludności.

USA nowym rozgrywającym w Azji

Ameryka, budująca dopiero w XIX wieku swoja państwowość, nie angażowała się wówczas tak jak kraje Wielka Brytania czy Francja w podbój Azji. Fakt ten później pozwolił Amerykanom budować relacje z Daleką Azją bez balastu historycznych uraz. Dodatkowo zwycięstwo nad niepokonaną Wielką Brytanią w wojnie o niepodległośc w 1783 roku, a potem zwycięstwo nad potężną Japonią w 1945 roku czyniło z USA w świadomości społeczeństw azjatyckich niepokonanych bogów – nowych panów świata.

Po 1945 roku głównymi rozgrywającymi na boisku Dalekiego Wschodu zostały USA, Chiny i ZSRR. Ameryce udało się w znacznej części uniknąć kolonialnych błędów popełnionych wcześniej przez Brytyjczyków i nawiązać z częścią krajów Azji relacje partnerskie - nie tyle jednak z autentycznej przyjaźni, co ze startegii budowania swoich przyczółków w Azji w celu powstrzymywania rozprzeszczeniania się komunizmu.

Parasol nad Tajwanem

USA po zwycięstwie nad Japonią w 1945 roku dążyły z jednej strony – w perspektywie konfliktu z ZSRR - do nawiązania dobrych stosunków z Chinami, z drugiej strony do osłabiania ich pozycji w Azji i powstrzymania ekspansji komunizmu. Głównym partnerem strategicznym w regionie stała sie wówczas dla USA Japonia. Poza tym podczas wojny domowej w Chinach pod koniec lat 40-tych XX wieku Stany Zjednoczone wspierały prawicową armię Chang Kai-Szeka, prowadząc jednocześnie rozmowy z komunistami chińskimi na wypadek ich zwycięstwa. Niefortunnie w 1949 roku wojnę domową w Chinach wygrali właśnie komuniści na czele z wyjatkowo uprzedzonym do Zachodu Mao Tse Tungiem a pokonany prawicowy wódz Chang Kai Szek z niedobitkami swej armii zbiegł na Tajwan. Początkowo USA nie zamierzało poświęcać relacji z Chinami kontynentalnymi, wspierając prawicowców chińskich na Tajwanie. Sytuację zmienił komunistyczny przewrót stanu w Korei w 1950 roku, poparty przez przywódców ZSRR i Chin Ludowych - Stalina i Mao Tse Tunga. W odpowiedzi USA wysłało do Korei armię pod egidą ONZ oraz otworzyła „parasol ochronny”nad Tajwanem, rozmieszczajac na Morzu Wschodiochinskim swe okrety wojenne. Skutkami wojny w Korei byl szczuczny podział Korei na częśc Pn i Pd. oraz wsparcie militarne i finansowe Tajwanu przez USA, który obok Japonii stał się ich głownym partnerem strategicznym na Dalekim Wschodzie. Wówczas też byt Tajwanu stał się całkowiecie zależny od USA. Propagandzie Chang Kai-Szeka (notabene Chińczyka pielęgnującego dawne tradycje Chin) nie pozostało więc nic innego niż zataić skrywane kolonalne, urazy i okazywać Ameryce szacunek, wdzięcznośc i podziw – przekazywane nowym pokoleniom Chińczyków urodzonych na Tajwanie.
I nawet gdy USA w latach 70.tych za prawowite Chiny uznał te ze stolicą w Pekinie, a nie w Tajpei, Tajwan pozostał im wierny w miłości – nie mając w istocie innego wyjścia.

Kochac albo umrzec

Tajwan pokochał USA miłością bezwarunkową i bezkrytyczną – razem ze wszystkimi jego zaletami i wadami. To, co amerykańskie – w tym kultura masowa - stało się dla Tajwańczyków synonimem siły i wysokiej jakości. Jednocześnie propaganda państwowa nakazała swym obywatelom jednoczesny szacunek do dawnego okupanta, a teraz partnera – Japonii. I to właśnie Japonia, tak jak dawniej, stała się w Dalekiej Azji centrum finansowym i kulturalnym. Dla młodego pokolenia urodzonego na Tajwanie po 1950 roku – nie pamiętającego okupacji japońskiej i cynizmu zachodnich kolonizatorów – wzorce amerykańskie, japońskie i europejskie stały się wzorcami obowiązującymi. Wprowadzanie w życie amerykańskich rozwiązań gospodarczych pozwoliło zresztą Tajwanowi na osiągnięcie bardzo szybko niezależności finansowej. Wysepce – uznawanej w świecie jako niezależne państwo jedynie przez kilka prawicowych dyktatur w Ameryce Pd i Afryce – nie pozostało też nic innego jak przyjmowanie przybyszów ze świata – a zwłaszcza z USA i Europy – z otwartymi rękami. Oni właśnie – przy braku oficjalnych ambasad - mieli stanowić nieoficjalnych ambasadorów Tajwanu na świecie.
Absurdem w wypadku Tajwanu byloby tez stawianie jakichkolwiek warunkow Stanom Zjednoczonym, nie mowiac juz o krytyce poczynan Wielkiego Brata. Tajwan podobnie jak Polska bezkrytycznie poparl amerykanska wojne w Iraku. Jesli jednak Polska - bedac czescia zjednoczonej Europy - ma szanse bez pomocy USA nie zostac wchlonietym przez Rosje, Tajwan bez wsparcia Stanow Zjednoczonych nie ma co liczyc na jakakolwiek inna pomoc z zewnatrz. Inwazja Chin na Tajwan zakonczylaby sie prawdopodbnie jedynie protestami dyplomatycznymi kilku krajow swiata, reszta milczalaby nie chcac narazac swych stosunkow handlowych z Chinami. Tajwanczykom pozostalo wiec kochac USA miloscia irracjonalna i oblubiencza oraz wbrew wszystkiemu wierzyc, ze Ameryka bedzie z nimi na dobre i na zle.

Un producto con un punto de originalidad, que lo hace diferente al resto, más allá de la calidad que se le presupone y un precio mayor que la competencia. Ahí está, paradojicamente, una de las preocupaciones de la marca para este y otros modelos, ser más caro pero mostrar una versión de acceso que enganche y abra las puertas del concesionario a muchos entusiastas del estilo, aunque luego, como suele pasar, el precio suba bastante si queremos algunos extras.

En este caso, la agencia DDB Barcelona ha contado con la productora Garage Films y el realizador Albert Uria para contar la historia de una combinación nominal que marca una vida de éxito, hasta el punto en que el protagonista decide dar el relevo a su querido Polo. En ese momento todo se viene abajo, pero volver a empezar es muy fácil, sólo cuesta 9.900€. Y sabes que te cambiará la vida.

Continuand seria de concerte, Facem Records va produce editiile de hiphop ale festivalului Noisefun. Incepem in forta pe 16 Mai cu un line-up format din unii dintre cei mai respectati MC din lume... si cand spunem MC nu ne referim la marionetele care ne imbie cu masinile, femeile si bijuteriile lor in videoclipuri ci la oameni care au dus arta manuirii cuvintelor la un alt nivel. Vorbim despre cei mai apreciati creatori de rime, despre cei mai buni freestyleri, despre oameni care stiu sa miste multimea cand urca pe scena. Pe langa asta o sa avem primul showcase de sampling si beatmaking din Romania, un Wall of Fame la care participa cei mai buni artisti graffiti romani si nu in ultimul rand o demonstratie din partea breakerilor.

E pe departe cel mai important eveniment pe care l-am organizat pana acum si avem placerea sa va invitam si pe voi! Daca nu ii cunoasteti pe cei de pe afis nu-i nimic, va intelegem, nu toti ne-am nascut experti in hiphop. Avem si o solutie pentru problema asta: aprindeti-va un joint, asezati-va confortabil si cititi povestea de mai jos.

Unul dintre cei mai longevivi reprezentanti ai hiphop-ului newyorkez, MASTA ACE si-a inceput cariera in 1987 castigand un concurs de freestyle intr-un club din Brooklyn. Premiul consta in cateva ore de inregistrari la THE HIT FACTORY, studio care apartinea parintelui miscarii hiphop din Queens, MARLEY MARL. Acesta e impresionat de talentul tanarului MC si il invita sa apara pe compilatia MARLEY MARL IS IN CONTROL. In scurt timp, Ace este invitat sa fie parte din gruparea JUICE CREW. Norocul ii surade din nou atunci cand, aflandu-se in studio i se ofera ocazia sa participe la piesa THE SYMPHONY in locul altui membru JUICE CREW, MC SHAN,care nu dorea sa apara pe piesa pe motiv ca ceilalti MC langa care trebuia sa cante erau prea tineri si necunoscuti. MC-ii in cauza erau KOOL G RAP, BIG DADDY KANE si CRAIG G, iar aceasta piesa, devenita una dintre cele mai mari posse-cut-uri ale tuturor timpurilor, avea sa-i faca pe toti celebri.

Ace continua sa lucreze cu Marley Marl la albumul sau de debut, "TAKE A LOOK AROUND" care apare in 1990. In perioada care urmeaza, hiphop-ul incepe sa devina din ce in ce mai popular in State iar meseria de MC devine din ce in ce mai profitabila. Vazand potentialul, multe trupe noi incearca sa castige atentia publicului exagerand in rime pentru a vinde mai multe albume. Masta Ace este printre primii care observa ca acesta tendinta afecteaza imaginea adevaratei culturi si ia atitudine pe cel de-al doilea album, SLAUGHTAHOUSE, aparut in 1993. Este un album conceptual in care sunt parodiate atitudinile exagerate din piesele de hiphop. Cu ocazia acestui album, Ace isi infiinteaza propriul crew, MASTA ACE INCORPORATED, din care mai fac parte LORD DIGGA, PAULA PERRY, EYCEYOUROCK si LESCHEA.

In 1994 este cooptat de SPIKE LEE pentru single-ul de pe coloana sonora a filmului CROOKLYN. Apare astfel piesa CROOKLYN DODGERS produsa de Q TIP de la A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, unde Masta Ace descrie alaturi de SPECIAL ED si BUCKSHOT atmosfera apasatoare a strazilor din Brooklyn ilustrata si in filmele lui SPIKE LEE. In clip apar MIKE TYSON si MICHAEL JORDAN iar piesa ajunge deasemenea in topul BILBOARD si devine clasica pentru ascultatorii de hiphop, versurile celor 3 fiind printre cele mai citate din hiphop-ul acelei perioade.

Acesta il declara invingator pe Boogieman, care are versurile deja pregatite si il ia prin surprindere pe Ace care se pierde pe scena si este chiar huiduit de public pentru prestatia dezamagitoare.

Masta Ace, din nou in lumina reflectoarelor
Ace profita de moment si scoate in 2001 albumul independent DISPOSABLE ARTS care ii ia cu surprindere pe toti ascultatorii de hiphop si ocupa primele locuri in topurile de specialitate. MC-ul pare sa se reinventeze si vine cu un sound proaspat care ii intareste pozitia in randul celor mai respectati creatori de rime. Apare astfel ocazia colaborarii cu multe nume mari cum ar fi GURU, COMMON, BEATNUTS sau JEAN GRAE. Cu toate acestea unele versuri de pe album ii fac pe fani sa creada ca acesta ar fi ultimul material.

Zvonurile sunt insa infirmate odata cu aparitia albumului A LONG HOT SUMMER, cu ocazia caruia se solidifica si relatia cu ceilalti membri EMC care contribuie cu strofe pe mai multe trackuri ale albumului. Reactia pozitiva a fanilor ii determina pe cei 4 sa formeze un proiect pentru a realiza albumul THE SHOW.

Debutand cu albumul MILLENNIUM METAPHORS, PHI LIFE CYPHER au avansat treptat pana la statutul de una dintre cele mai respectate trupe din Marea Britanie. Grupul este compus din 2 MC: SI-PHILLI si LIFE MC, ale caror versuri rapide, energetice si inteligente se combina cu beat-urile grele ale producatorului DJ NAPPA. Cei 3 au inceput sa faca muzica impreuna in 96 dar le-a trebuit mai mult timp pentru a se consacra. Printre motivele pentru care au ajuns in varful piramidei MC-ilor englezi se numara si faptul ca au fost finalisti in competitia organizata de mogul-ul hiphop-ului englezesc, TIM WESTWOOD, in 2000, sau prestatia devastatoare de pe posse-cut-ul lui DJ SKITZ, �Fingerprints of the Gods�. De atunci au avut ocazia sa colaboreze cu nume ca THE HERBALISER, DJ VADIM, TASKFORCE, SCRATCH PERVERTS sau ROOTS MANUVA si au mers in turneu alaturi de GORILLAZ, aparand si ca invitati pe remixul hitului acestora, "CLINT EASTWOOD".

Apare si primul material solo al lui Life MC, intitulat EVERYDAY LIFE, unde acompaniat de acelasi sound marca DJ Nappa, are ocazia sa atace teme mai personale si mai adanci decat pe albumul PHI LIFE.

In 2004, grupul si-a solidificat pozitia in elita muzicii britanice cu al 2-lea album, HIGHER FORCES. Beat-urile sunt de aceasta data mai putin sumbre decat cele de pe primul album, dar versurile celor 2 MC nu sunt deloc mai putin feroce sau mai superficiale. Albumul se bucura de participarea unui al 3-lea MC, SKIT SLAM, ca membru neoficial in grup.

Life MC mai are la active inca 2 albume solo, REALITIES OF LIFE aparut in 2006 si OUTSIDE LOOKING IN aparut chiar anul acesta. Ambele albume mentin standardul ridicat al celorlalte release-uri si ii ofera din nou posibilitatea de a trata subiecte mai personale decat pe albumele Phi Life.

Momentul cel mai apreciat al show-urilor este insa acela in care Life isi demonstreaza capabilitatea ca MC de freestyle, improvizand rime pe loc minute in sir, motiv pentru care in majoritatea cazurilor show-urile Phi Life Cypher intra in prelungiri.

MARCO POLO reprezinta in mod cert revelatia anului 2007 in materie de beat-uri. Atras in lumea hiphop-ului de primul album A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, producatorul originar din Toronto s-a mutat in capitala culturii hiphop, New York, si a inceput sa-si caute un loc de munca intr-un studio. Intr-un final, cu ajutorul producatoruluilui AYATOLLAH s-a angajat ca stagiar la CUTTING ROOM STUDIO, printr-o coincidenta pe postul pe care lucrase si JUST BLAZE inainte de a deveni unul dintre cei mai bine platiti producatori. Aici mixeaza piese pentru artisti ca FAT JOE, BEATNUTS sau TALIB KWELI si profita de pozitia pe care o avea ca sa-si promoveze propriile beat-uri, pe care le lasa sa se auda la maxim din biroul in care lucra de fiecare data cand venea cineva important la studio.

In 2005 apare si primul album, CANNED GOODS care contine in mare parte doar instrumentale dar isi indeplineste foarte bine rolul de a atrage atentia MC-ilor insetati de beat-uri puternice care sa le acompanieze rimele. In paralel, MP lucreaza si la albumul ORANGE MOON OVER BROOKLYN al lui PUMPKINHEAD, pe care il produce integral.

Din ce in ce mai multa lume din industrie incepe sa ia seama de talentul noului producator, printre cei impresionati numarandu-se si MASTA ACE. Ascultand un CD cu beat-uri, acesta se decide sa foloseasca unul din ele pentru piesa DO IT NOW de pe albumul A LONG HOT SUMMER. Cum Ace epuizase deja bugetul pentru album, cei doi cad de acord ca in schimbul beat-ului Masta Ace sa cante pe urmatorul single semnat Marco Polo. Piesa rezultata se numeste NOSTALGIA si avea sa-l determine pe M.P. sa renunte la postul de inginer de sunet pentru a se dedica productiei de instrumentale si mai ales pentru a lucra la ceea ce considera ca fiind opera lui, un album de productie pe care acum isi permitea sa-i invite pe toti MC-ii pe care ii aprecia.

Pe album apar KOOL G RAP, WORDSWORTH, O.C., ED O.G., BUCKSHOT de la BLACK MOON, JOJO PELLEGRINO, SADAT X, A.G., JUJU de la BEATNUTS si multi altii. Desi colaborarile joaca un rol important, beat-urile lui MP sunt cele care ii determina pe multi critici sa considere albumul PORT AUTHORITY cel mai reusit album de hiphop al anului 2007. Sound-ul puternic de pe Port Authority i-a determinat pe MC veterani ca O.C. sau KOOL G RAP sa apeleze la MP pentru a le mixa noile albume.

Marco Polo este primul producator din istorie care va sustine un showcase la Bucuresti, demonstrand live arta creerii unui beat pe samplerul MPC 2000XL. TORAE a inceput sa mearga in concerte alaturi de RUFF RYDERS sau CASH MONEY MILLIONAIRES dupa ce, la sfarsitul anilor 90, demo-ul lui i-a impresionat pe cei de la BAD BOY RECORDS. Prieten apropiat al lui CAM�RON si afiliat DIPLOMATS, TORAE s-a facut remarcat prin aparitia pe foarte multe mixtape-uri si show-uri radio din New York.

In 2006 apare single-ul PROMISES care atrage atentia DJ-ilor din underground si se bucura de apreciere in acest mediu elitist, Torae fiind si nominalizat alaturi de crew-ul lui, THE COALESCENCE, la UNDERGROUND MUSIC AWARDS pentru BEST RAP GROUP si SONG OF THE YEAR. Ca orice MC talentat din noul val, isi sustine cariera realizand o serie de mixtape-uri cu piese realizate independent, dar care in cazul lui Torae se bucura de participarea unor nume foarte mari. DAILY CONVERSATION este cel mai apreciat, continand piese produse de DJ PREMIER, 9TH WONDER sau MARCO POLO. Reprezentand MC-ii romani la acest eveniment, CTC revin pe scena cu prima reprezentatie live in Bucuresti de mai bine de un an. Trupa este cunoscuta in randul ascultatorilor pentru show-urile energice si rimele complexe si este considerata de multi ca fiind trupa cu cel mai mare impact asupra miscarii hiphop in Romania in acest deceniu, reprezentantii CTC fiind initiatorii miscarii de hiphop independent la noi in tara. Peisajul nu ar fi complet fara graffiti si b-boying, celelalte 2 elemente ale hiphop-ului. Pe scena mare a Arenelor, pe 16 mai vom avea un perete de circa 30 de metri lungime pe care vor desena cativa dintre cei mai buni artisti graffiti din tara, iar pe linoleumul din fata peretelui vor dansa cei de la DLT Crew si invitatii lor.

LOCATIE:

Festivalul se va desfasura in incinta Arenelor Romane din Bucuresti, situate langa Parcul Carol. Arenele vor fi acoperite cu un cort, pentru a asigura desfasurarea evenimentului si in conditii meteorologice nefavorabile. Sonorizarea este asigurata de Sfinx Experience si este acceasi folosita la evenimente ca DJ Tiesto sau Black Eyed Peas.

Pretul unui bilet este de 35 de RON. Biletele pot fi achizitionate doar la intrarea in incinta Arenelor Romane, in ziua concertului.

In mijlocul Arenelor vom instala un cort cu capacitatea de aproximativ 2000 de persoane (nu cel din imagine :D )

The Adventures of Marco Polo by Russell Freedman is a well-written, carefully balanced assessment of one of the most controversial writers from the Middle Ages. Marco Polo's tales were so outlandish that they were dismissed by many at the time (and by many still today) as wildly exaggerated or even fabricated. For example, he said he had seen rocks that burned - a fantastic tale that Europeans dismissed. Of course, what he had seen was coal - which was plentiful in China, but virtually unknown in Europe in the Middle Ages. Still many of his claims remain unsubstantiated. Marco (and his cousin and his uncle) spent twenty-four years in China, learning the language, making a living as merchants, and winning the favor and confidence of The Mongol Emperor, Kublai Khan ( a descendant of Ghenghis Khan). Freedman does an excellent job of describing their journey, and the remarkable adventures they had while in China. And Freedman includes a page-long discussion of the influence that Marco Polo had on a later explorer, Christopher Columbus. Here is what Freedman has to say: "Marco's book seems to have fired the imagination of Christopher Columbus. He used his well-thumbed Latin translation as a guidebook, scribbling notes in the margins and underlining passages about gold, jewels, and spices, when he sailed west across the Atlantic, expecting to rediscover the land described by Marco Polo. When Columbus reached Cuba, he believed that he was at the edge of the Great Khan's realm and would soon find the Mongol kingdom of Cathay." Freedman's forte is young adult biography. He has twice had books finish as finalists for the Newbery Medal (The Wright Brothers and Eleanor Roosevelt) and in 1988 won the Newbery Medal itself for Lincoln: A Photobiography. He and his publisher do not neglect the visual in this book either. The full-page chapter-heading paintings by Russian painter Bagram Ibatoulline are stunning. Ibatoulline is able to adapt his style in masterful fashion as he moves from medieval illumination to Chinese silk painting. Also included in the text are dozens of archival illustrations which appeared in the numerous hand-written copies of Marco Polo's book that circulated in the century before printing. Together with the first class spa, The Deck is composed of Polo Bistro Pool Lounge, Sarangani Function Room, and Marco Polo's Fitness Center. Lazuli Spa is very inviting. However, knowing their rates will definitely make you think twice.. more than twice!

Located at the 4th level, The Deck is a perfect place to "chillax." I got there at around 4:00 PM. The sun was just right. The heat isn't much to be afraid of though because their pool side beds are placed under huge umbrellas. After a cooling dip in the pool, laying down with drinks and chips on the side is a perfect treat under the sun.

Nothing extraordinary with their swimming pool. They gave it an infinity pool look though with the water leveling to the ground. The pool is good for kids since it is only 3-5 feet deep (no division).

This is the classy Polo Bistro Pool Lounge. I heard dining at Polo Bistro costs P1,000 per head. Wish I could give it a try so I could justify its cost. hehehe

It's best to take a plunge during weekdays at around 2-5 PM for you to have privacy, "own" the place and enjoy the "just right" heat of the sun. There are more swimmers at night especially during weekends.

Durch die Kreuzfahrer gelangte das Rezept für eine Mischung aus Fruchtsirup und Schnee wieder nach Europa. Laut dem Karfunkel entdeckte ein italienischer Zuckerbäcker um 1530 die kühlende Wirkung von Salpeter und konnte somit Speiseeis herstellen. Wikipedia schreibt diese Entdeckung Marco Polo zu, er soll das Rezept in China kennengelernt haben.

Jedenfalls wurde die neue Entdeckung 1533 wirkungsvoll auf der Hochzeit Katharinas von Medici präsentiert. Das erste Eiscafé wurde übrigens 1660 in Paris eröffnet, um 1700 wurde Speiseeis auch in anderen europäischen Kaffeehäusern bekannt.
