I bought the map and planned my route. I was not disappointed with my self-guided tour, even though I can't tell you anything about the houses (except the one with a placard!). I walked through the neighborhoods and admired the craftsmanship of the homes, marveled at seeing things in person that I've only ever seen in print, and stood dumbfounded that people actually live in these works of art. I'm guessing they appreciate their riches every single day.

It being the summer and all, the art world is a little sleepy. No problem. The British Geologic Survey and OneGeology have partnered to create this image of the earth as though nothing existed except, well, geology. No cities, no water, no soil, nothin' but geology. Aesthetically, aside from the sunrise coming around the bend, its a nice map, and who doesn't enjoy a good looking map?. Now i am sure for geologists this an empirical image, generated to illustrate data in an obective way. But am i the only one reading some substantial post-apocalyptic doom & gloom into this? I tend to do this with science anyways, but that bizarre sunrise thing has to have something to do with it. This is certainly not your typical scientific document.

The feature of Google Maps is about a year old, and inittialy was launched in the United States around May last year (I may, and probably am, wrong, heh). Since then it has slowly expanded, and on Monday the 4th (two days ago, for those who don't know dates very well) Australia was finally added. Google has a wide range of aeas fo Australia covered, including my house. I'd show the interwebz, but I just know I'll get a guy stalking me with rocks with in a matter of minutes. No thanks.

I reccomend you guys check it out, if you want. Head to www.maps.google.com, enter a street address and if the street is outlined with a blue border, or you have a clearly visible 'street view' link, then you'll be curious to what you'll see. It's surpsingly fun, to be honest.

Doing a google search, I was led to the google groups where it was explained that this was a symptom of an incompatible version of the Skype Firefox plugin.  This plugin was installed along with Skype (of course).  It adds the capability to call numbers directly from firefox, turning recognized landline phone numbers into Skype links.  In my opinion, this is very handy.  However, this plugin happens to stunt Google Maps, keeping it from loading correctly.  At one point in time, the only remedy was to disable the Skype plugin.  While this still solves the problem, it's recommended to download the updated plugin.

Download the updated plugin:

For those of you who would rather not mess with the plugin or updating the software, you can disable the plugin.

To disable the Firefox Skype plugin:

1. Open Firefox
2. Go to the "Tools" Menu, then click on "Add-ons"
3. In the window that appears, scroll down and click "Skype extension for Firefox"
4. Click the "Disable" button

This will disable the plugin and you will need to restart Firefox for the changes to take effect.  Once you have restarted, Google Maps should load with no problem.

Finally, seeing the low number of medals going to the the southern hempisphere reminded me of the proportional maps at WorldMapper.org, which lends size to different countries based on the information it is displaying. I wish the folks at WorldMapper had some more historical data, so we could compare different factors (infant mortality, food production, etc.) with the NYTimes medal map. Also of note, the NYTimes map reinforces the problem with using proportional area/volume maps - specifically, humans are notoriously poor judges of area and volume, and particularly bad at judging the relative size of circles. A circle that has twice the area of another circle appears, to most people, as much smaller than it is. This leads to the necessity for scaling compensation with maps, as cartographers need to artificially increase the size of circles for humans to accurately estimate its relative size. John Krygier of Making Maps: DIY Cartography has a great post about the entire issue.

Anyways, I give you the Mines:

These two islands were part of one large island, but due to steel mining, the center section has sunk.  Now, only sand harvesters and fishers (many of which are convicted Pouchers serving their sentences) live on the smaller island.  It has been completely leveled of vegetation in order to harvest the sand.

The sea between the two islands is blocked off from the rest of the ocean and is used as a breeding ground for the jellyfish they need to make their glass compound.  (The compound is made from superheated sand, combined with the mashed bodies of the jellyfish.  More on this later.)

The larger island is mostly forest, and supplies most of the need for wood.  Near the center of the forest, a kind of megalith can be found, moss covered and mostly hidden.  No one knows where it came from because any time a scientist or geologist has attempted to study it, he ran away screaming and refused to talk about what scared him so badly.

The capitol city of the Mines is Salveig and is mostly an industrial city.  Very few people live there who aren't laborers.
