RIP: Benoit Lestang

Sadly Benoit Lestang died while I was on holiday.

Benoit was a great French makeup artist. Amongst the recent films he worked on were: Martyrs, Un secret, Le Scaphandre et le papillon, Molière, Ne le dis à personne, Manderlay, Arsène Lupin, Saint Ange, Tiresia, and Le Pacte des loups. He was also a friend to themakeupgallery.

DVDrama has an obituary (in French) with images of some of his recent work.

RIP: Stan Winston

Stan Winston died of cancer on 16 June, aged sixty-two.

In honor of his significant contributions to prosthetic makeup artistry Make-up Artist magazine, in conjunction with the Stan Winston Studios, will host a tribute at IMATS on Saturday, 21 June. As Michael Key said: 'He’s left a sizable void in the industry. There’s not a prosthetics makeup artist out there who hasn’t been influenced by Stan Winston.'

His influence on special effects is attested by a shelf full of Oscars, Emmys and BAFTAs. But his impact extended way beyond special effects; he enabled filmmakers to bring new, different and stranger visions to our screens. As James Cameron said: 'We’ve lost a great artist, a man who made a contribution to the cinema of the fantastic that will resound for a long long time.'

I can only commend the tribute at AICN which contains personal and artistic tributes from Rick Baker, Alec Gillis, Tom Woodruff, Joe Dante, Richard Taylor, James Cameron and other effects artists and filmmakers.

I had the pleasure of meeting the ladies from Beauty on Call this past weekend. They had to be some of the bubbliest and just adorable girls ever. Beauty On Call is a full service agency catering to clients from high end fashion clients, all the way down to the princess birthday parties. They offer services ranging from basic hairstyling for day of prom to Hanna Tattoo bridal shower parties. If it has anything to do with beauty, this team can create a wonderful experience for you. DDT Efectos Especiales: David Marti and Montse Ribé, Pan's Labyrinth, Oscar — nuff said.

Plan 9 FX: Oscar Del Monte and Nacho Diaz have a brand-new website with lots of new images of their work, including a batch of celebrity transformations from the TV show Anónimos. Recently, they've been working on Steven Soderbergh's Guerrilla.

Mario Campioli: Mario Campioli is based in Brazil so, apart from Olga, I've managed to see little of his work either on screen or on DVD.

Dharma Estudio: Arturo Balseiro's website; he has also worked for DDT and others.

Inside FX: Inside FX were nominated for a Best Special Effects Goya for their work on [REC].

maquiarte: Spanish makeup news and forum — sadly, the news is not updated as frequently as it used to be.

JNL Media: How long have you been doing makeup?

Mar-lis: I've been doing makeup, professionally, for 3 yrs.

JNL Media: Any particular field of interest?

Mar-lis: Personally, I prefer working on films and modeling portfolios for creative freedom purposes :oD

JNL Media: Do you like working on film projects?

Mar-lis: I love working on films because the producers usually hand the MUA the script and basically gives you his/her complete trust in making the images of the characters, that were conjured up in their head, come to life. What people don't realize is that when they are watching a movie, even the most subtle (natural) look, is a conscious decision made by the Key Makeup Artist/Designer.

JNL Media: Are there any drawbacks or dislikes?

Mar-lis: Makeup is an essential part of a film production and, a lot of the time, MUA's are being underpaid. Since the job title seems somewhat "glamorous", productions try to get us to work for as little as possible when, in fact, we put in a lot of long hours of standing up, applying & reapplying makeup and keeping actors looking shine-free (the most tedious, but needed, aspect) throughout the shoot day. It's a really relevant position. So i'd suggest to anyone who wants to be one, to really master the craft and let your body of work negotiate a just rate of pay for your time and expertise.

JNL Media: Are you just getting started in the film industry?

Mar-lis: Compared to seasoned MUA's, I'd be considered a newbie. But my first and last projects have been for film. I've been really busy.

JNL Media: Do you work on low budget or student films?

Mar-lis: I would and do work on low budget and/or student films. If I believe in the project after reading the working script, then I will definitely jump on board, unless there is a schedule conflict or the rate of pay is almost insulting. :oD

JNL Media: What necessary steps did you take to build a strong portfolio?

Mar-lis: Well I began by testing with many diversely talented photographers. I do not only look for excellent photos, but also for other factors including friendly and effective communication between the photographer and I. Similar visions for the work we'd like to create- sort of bouncing ideas off of each other for theme, lighting,and color scheme purposes. All of that goes into producing a great working portfolio. *A beautiful model wouldn't hurt either *:o)

Makeup ala Mimi/Dior - What were they thinking!?

In a post called, "Crazy Things do Happen - Even in the Makeup World" from Beautiful Makeup Search, this picture was shown from a recent DiorFashion Show. She also mentions the new cosmetic line created by Amy Winehouse.

Mimi must have had a hand in that show!

Above is an amazing Avant-Garde look from Sephora's 2007 Holiday Catalog. She is beautiful and mysterious.  The Makeup Artists behind creating her look must be acknowledged for their extraordinary talent.

This picture, is what I think characterizes the"Makeup ala Mimi/Dior" look. At least it is entertaining.

You won't find her in the IMDb but she's probably the most famous makeup artist in the UK today.

Somehow, whether through naivity or as a willing accomplice, she became involved in the UK's biggest ever robbery; she spent two weeks working on prosthetic disguises for the robbers. She was charged as an accomplice but four months into the trial she switched sides, agreeing to turn Queen's evidence and testify against her former co-defendants: in return the prosecution dropped all charges against her. Whatever her motive in doing so it must have taken a significant amount of bravery, knowing the viciousness of the gang.

On one level the story sounds like one of those caper movies involving elaborate disguises (eg The Million Dollar Rip-Off) and an 'inside' man. But on another, it was a brutal crime, where the wife and child of the Securitas depot manager were kidnapped and held at gunpoint to ensure his cooperation.

Whatever her role, Michelle Hogg is probably going to spend a long-time in hiding — not least because at least one suspected member of the gang got away along with a large part of the money. If anyone finds her, I'd guess she's hoping it will be an agent looking to buy the rights to her story.

And as to the photo: I'd guess she's using all her skills not to look like this.

I spend a fair amount of time researching credits for movies and generally browsing makeup artists' websites so I thought I'd highlight a few I've encountered on my virtual travels.

I'll start with a few sites from French makeup artists:

Nomansland FX is a new  multi-lingual website from French FX artists Jean-Christophe Spadacci, Pascal Molina, and Denis Gastou: Dante 01, Sagan, Videocq, Immortel, The Crimson Rivers, Kiss of the Dragon, Irreversible, etc. It is well worth a visit — I particularly liked Sylvie Testud's transformation into an older Françoise Sagan for the forthcoming mini-series Sagan.

FXcinema  is the website of Pierre-Olivier Thevenin, Jacques-Olivier Molon and Frédéric Balmer. Between them they have worked on Bon voyage, Bloody Mallory, The Pink Panther, and Dans la peau d'un noir (the French version of Black.White.).

Pierre-Olivier Persin has worked on a series of interesting movies, including Sa Majeste Minor and Bloody Mallory.

FX-Studio is the website of David Scherer who has worked on a heap of French movies.

Frédéric Balmer has worked on Bloody Mallory, La Chambre des officiers and other movies. I am not sure whether he still updates this site as it may have been replaced by FXcinema.

SileFx is the website of Laurent Zupan.

This is by no means intended to be a comprehensive list of French movie makeup websites. I plan on including no more than six links in each of these brief features. If you want your site covered next time I get round to France or listed in the blogroll, add a comment below.

Next time, I'll do Germany, then Japan and South America. I'm deliberately leaving the English speaking countries until later in the series as the prominent makeup artists in those countries are already well-known internationally.
