Hehe... I found those gorgeous nailpolishes named after different cars. Like Mustang and Stingray. I like Mustang and Rambler best but I think the funniest was wax. A see-through polish with the same effect as wax for a car...

moolah! I went to collect my 100% organic everyday mineral samples that i bought & were flewn i

moolah! I went to collect my 100% organic everyday mineral samples that i bought & were flewn in from USA at my friend's place :D Cant say how excited I am to try on it! heh after all the raves i've heard & I shall start trying on it tmr! Too bad i'm gg ovr to England in less than a months time so i hv not enough time to spree for other stuffs from Everyday minerals :( bcuz some spree orgs are damn laoya & wols I shall use my everyday mineral with the mineral foundation from revlon! hehehe and can i add i love the jars they came in! So cute and handy :D hehe

Anws, on Monday i decided to try the Raspberry Roots Collagen Eye Patch i bought from The Face Shop (TFS)since it was raved at in Cleo as the best in lightening dark eye bags and totally owns my usual Signs Eye Mask from SKII i decided to give it a go to see if its really that good.

Concept
This advanced lifting line formulated with Wild Himalayan Raspberry Roots instantly lifts tightens pores and re-contours the skin that lacks resilience.

Description
Aqua Collagen and Raspberry Roots extract provides intense hydration and improves firmness on the eye areas

Duration: 30-40mins (Considered very long for usual eye mask of 15mins!)

With Pitera® and Eye Stress Eraser Complex, this eye mask targets problems around the eyes. Dark circles are lightened and fine lines reduced after just one application.

Duration: 10 - 15 mins

So when i first put the TFS mask onto my eyes, it does feel a little cold cuz i alwys put my skincare pdts in the fridge but aftr about 5 mins it didn feel cold anymore unlike SKII bcuz even after 15mins of use, the mask still feels very cold on face.

So after 40 mins of masking, i do feel that the skin around my eye area is indeed a little firmer but in terms of dark eye bags...they are still like the stormy sky lah! Kena cheated by the sales lady. BAHH. So if you wana liften the area around your eyes, you could prolly go for TFS mask since its much cheaper too! But if you wana reduce the darkness of your eye bags i suggest using SKII wld serve the purpose better! :)

So, on tues (i realise this week i'm like on a skincare frenzy! haha) i tried the "make my face sooooooooo smooth" mask accrding to my gf. heh but thats bcuz she use it everynight for 6 days alrd!

Lotus mask

Effects: Close up open pores. Rejuvenates cells and possesses anti-oxidants. Smoothen and moisture your skin. To whiten and re-hydrate your skin

Duration: 15-20 mins

After 20mins of masking on my face, my face does not feel super smooth maybe cuz first time doing lah. But my face feels tighter perhaps bcuz of the rejuvenating and tightening of pores effect :) apart from that i dont think my face is whiten/re-hydrated.

So tonight i shall revert to using my SKII Signs Eye Mask followed by a Collagen mask or Facial Treatment Mask from SKII but i'm afraid Facial Treatment Mask is gonna be too rich for my skin den little ugly red dots will start to pop out cz i'm currently undergoing stupid hormonal changes if you are smart enough to get what i mean.

Today two parcels arrived in my mailbox! :D

#1 Bucket Tote

I actually ordered a Sephia bucket tote i.e. the first picture below but there was a hole below the bag hence I had to get the dark brown one :( thou i've alwys loved tan coloured bags! but anyways, the real thing turn out to look better than the picture so its all good!

#2 Kimono! :D

I was sooooo happy to see this in my parcel cuz i've been lemming for a kimono since forever! but sadly, the pic looks nothing like the real item :( Sian 1 half la! the colour aint tt bright! I swear i thought the pocket doggy was FOR REAL so whn i opened it i was damn disappointed x 2.

~~~~
So i've just done my SKII signs eye mask and woo its really like what my mom alwys say, "一分钱一份货!" bcuz the SKII's mask is quite watery which is very good! it flowed down to my cheek so i rubbed it onto my cheek and instantaneously my cheek feels so supple n QQ 滑滑! WOO :D but wrinkles and lightened dark rings? I don't see any significant change so i'm gonna say no to that. i think tmr afternoon i'm just gonna do my SKII Facial Treatment Mask instead of the Dainty Design's Collagen mask! hehe
well, every girl just wants to look good isnt it? (;
I went to a wedding last weekend, and courtesy of Johanna,
I got a lesson in applying make-up.
During the session. Please ignore the fact that my hair resembles Sonic the Hedgehog.
The end product:
Jo's make-up always looks flawless, although I'm sure it helps when you're starting with porcelain skin. I've shared tips with the gals between pillow fights and bra freezings, but never have I had an elaborate "how-to." I loved the end product so much that I want to go out and buy all of the components. To anyone who is worried-don't worry, the dream of getting my make up applied at a department store counter one day has not died with this new knowledge. I will persevere.
Fun factor: 10
Le riviste femminili hanno da sempre un loro asso nella manica:
essere l’equivalente cartaceo
Le riviste femminili hanno da sempre un loro asso nella manica:
essere l'equivalente cartaceo delle discariche a cielo aperto,
ma senza le note conseguenze che oggi infiammano la realpolitik.
“Tu” non è da meno.
E' un rotocalco d'attualità, moda, pettegolezzo con varie scivolate nell'etnico;
contiene una pingua dose di astrologia e informazioni sui progammi televisivi settimanali.
E' impegnato in un alto compito: la diffusione del 'nulla', noto spauracchio di chiunque sia nato negli anni '80 e abbia visionato la 'storia infinita' dove, appunto, questa frangia oltranzista mieteva vittime fra il dolore generale.
(Foto: Tu è una testata di riconosciuta fama e autorevolezza, citata dai più importanti politologi dell'emisfero australe, per le sue politiche di neoliberismo profondamente sensibili al sociale)
I servizi di moda sono naturalmente anticipati di minimo una stagione:
durante la calura insopportabile, ronzii di zanzare e litri di the freddo, Esso vi parlerà candidamente di mise autunnali, riuscendo quasi a farvi desiderare calzerotti di cotone imbottito e le maniche lunghe.
I prezzi di tali 'suggerimenti d'acquisto' assicurano che siano alla portata del target medio della lettrice : una 20-30enne (ma anche sfacciatamente molto più mature) che sia stata salvata in extremis da un eccesso di glucosio di portata mocciana, consumista fedele alla propria carta-sconti del super-megastore di fiducia ; ma anche rispettosa frequentatrice di boutique, nel periodo della tredicesima o paghetta rinforzata. Naturalmente i prezzi 'tipo' di ogni articolo laudato e sbrodato si aggirano almeno sui 30-60 euri minimo, notoriamente bazzecole.
( Foto: i prodotti presentati fra le pagine del rotocalco sono studiati bilanciando qualità e prezzo di cartellino. Non solo i must di stagione, quindi, ma anche beni pronti a resistere nel tempo, sempre con un occhio verso la discrezione e il buon gusto)
Una pagina che si fregia anche di foto a colori è dedicata all'ormai sacra sezione de : ''l'interviste''
al personaggio famoso, che riporta anche le facce sorridenti di ragazze/i (presubilmente gay oppure desiderosi delle grazie serali delle proprie compagne) coinvolti nel sondaggione della settimana,
che notoriamente sottopone ai teste la bontà dell'atteggiamento dei propri idoli.
Variabile maggioranza di si o no, dipendente da oscuri motivi che ancora oggi sono secretati in qualche regione periferica del sud-ovest.-nord di Smajhellaudhy (per proteggere la privacy)
Con mano alle prime pagine, segnalo gli altri delicati e approfonditi temi di ogni numero:
-Cover Story (le intervistone sopracitate)
-Look&Star (ovvero: quello che le star comprano lo dovete ASSOLUTAMENTE avere anche voi)
-La Grande Sfida (due personaggi televisivi messi a casaccio a confronto, per demandare il giudizio sul vincitrore/ice della puntata (?) al lettore di turno)
-Intervista (è la versione al maschile delle intervistone)
-26 domande lampo (come sopra : domande a caso a un personaggio a caso)
-Pagine intere di non meglio specificate 'Storie'
-Rubricone : ''Moda e Bellezza'' (come spendere un patrimonio per farvelo dare dal vostro lui, che ve lo avrebbe dato lo stesso)
-Rubricone : ''Femminile'' (varie panzane piscologiche/sociali spacciate per verità ultime, immancabili consigli della dietologa, della sessuologa, della presentatrice tv(sic), qualche consiglio 'furbo' (sic) per i viaggi, e naturalmente cucina (cavallo di battaglia di ogni target rosa)
-Rubricone : ''TV&Co'' (ovvero: ormai il canone l'hai pagato no? E allora devi come minimo vederti 2349348923489 ore di trasmissioni varie per non sentirti derubatA)
( Foto: Anche illustri personaggi dalla straordinata levatura culturale sono attivamente impegnati fra le pagine di ''Tu''. Qui l'esimio professore, letterato, umanista e poeta ministro S.Bondi mentre pondera la migliore poesia cinquecentesca da citare nell'angolo di cultura rinascimentale che gli è stato recentemente proposto dalla redazione)
Questa settimana voglio proporvi l'inenarrabile:
La ''storia vera'' della settimana parla di una donna, mesta 43 enne, impiegata come segretaria in un villaggio turistico che rimane oscuramente anonimo.
La timida e onesta signora racconta di un suo vizio che coltiva da almeno una ventina d'anni.
Il nudismo.
No: non accusateci di finto moralismo (per quello basta il pubblico di Forum). Non stiamo parlando di un'amante del sole integrale. Lei è proprio una fondamentalista.
Vive e LAVORA nuda per tutti i mesi dell'anno che il clima lo consente.
In questo frangente scopriamo che la donna ha un marito che ne condive la passione, e un figlio ''ragazzo'' di 11 anni, del quale tutto ci viene taciuto sui suoi costumi.
Partendo dalla dichiarazione che '' la famiglia era d'accordo'' (anche quella d'origine... come si vede che c'è gente tanto avvvanti!!) comincia a raccontarci di come, inesperta ventenne venne iniziata alle gioie della nudità dal marito, al largo di un lavo sopra una piccola imbarcazione;
Un racconto che, in altri toni, sembrerebbe quasi la prima volta di qualche scambista.
Seguono immancabili puntualizzazioni sul senso di libertà e di vicinanza alla 'natura' che tale condizione privilegiata comporta... come dire, nel suo caso ci si presenta come un grido d'anticonformismo e di comunanza di intenti con un qualche destino d'amore salvifico fra gli uomini, ci viene da pensare.
(Foto: la politica di ''Tu'' è sempre stata religiosamente scrupolosa nello scegliere le testimonianze da offrire al suo pubblico. Nessun comportamento che violi il principio di buona creanza è mai stato oggetto di cronaca. La pacatezza, la moderazione e l'estrema tolleranza dimostrata, bensì, lo rendono fulgido esempio in ogni redazione di approfondimento sociale, nel mondo)
Un minuto di silenzio, perlomeno, vorrei riservarlo alle vittime :
la muta natura sottoposta a tali torture visive.
(ps. Nella foto dell'articolo di ''Tu'' si specifica che il pareo indossato dall'intervistata è solo una concessione gentilmente offerta alla rivista, così da essere liberamente commercializzata e posta all'attenzione delle anime candide)
Altre delizie vi attendo sul prossimo numero di ''Tu''....
I love make-up as much as I love clothes. I've been writing so much about all the fashion trends and styles for fall, but have not mentioned a whole lot about trends for the face, the most important accessory to any outfit! This fall there will be a make-up trend for everyone! I personally like to emphasize my eyes. After my legs, they're my favorite physical trait. This fall will be all about the eyes: smoky eyes, full defined brows (i can't recommend threading enough, for lovely and clean, defined brows...i personally love it!) and extra long lashes. If you're all about your pucker, bright pinks and reds will be the colors of choice. If it's your hands you want to draw attention to, metallics will be the colors for your nails.
I like all these trends and know I will wear them all, maybe not together, especially the smoky eye and bright lips, but it's all trends I am already a fan of. On a final note, please keep in mind that unless you're wearing very subtle, good quality false lashes, they sometimes work best at night, and remember that you can find good quality lashes that won't run in the hundreds. I personally really like Sonia Kashuk's lashes.
Here's a link on how to work these beauty trends.
Kosmetik - How to Take Care Of Your Cosmetics
Von [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Sara_Lowe] Sara Lowe
Kosmetik Frauen sind die besten Freunde. Viele Frauen verbringen viel Geld jedes Jahr zu ersetzen und ergänzen ihre Sammlung von Kosmetika aus ihrer bevorzugten Marken und Linien bilden. Wahrhaftig, Frauen sind niemals zögerlich zu protzen in Make-up, dass sie von Zeit zu Zeit. Aber obwohl fast jede Frau in der Welt besitzt ihre eigene Make-up, aber nicht alle von ihnen vielleicht wissen über die Verwendung von Datum ihrer Kosmetika und wie Sie kümmern sich um sie.
Warum ist es notwendig, kümmern sich um unsere Kosmetika? Kosmetika sind nicht die Dinge, wir können nur bei einer Ecke in unserer Schublade und Nutzung durch fünf Jahren oder so. Sie können auslaufen, und gleichzeitig können sie Schmutz ansammeln jeden Tag. Und deshalb müssen wir immer im Kopf behalten, dass wir kümmern sich um sie, genau wie es unsere Wäsche oder Kleidung, denn sie kommen in direkten Kontakt mit unserer Haut. Natürlich können Sie auch schon einmal von Frauen, litt Make-up Horrorgeschichten, weil der mit einem Lippenstift abgelaufen, oder die Entwicklung von Allergien wegen schmutzigen Pinsel. Hier sind einige Tipps, wie Sie kümmern sich um Ihr Make-up-Kit und alles innerhalb von:
1. Überprüfen Sie Ihre Make-up für Ablaufdaten. Ja, haben makeup Ablaufdatum wie Konserven. Und dass sie, nachdem sie verfallen, ist die Gefahr einer sich selbst auf die Gefahren von Allergien Haut und unreife alterungsbeständig. Jeder hat eine kosmetische Haltbarkeit und ob Sie zustimmen oder nicht, sind sie nicht erlaubt, lauern in Ihrem Make-up immer. So bekommen Sie Ihre Make-up-Kit gerade jetzt, und sehen Sie die folgenden Felder Haltbarkeit für verschiedene Make-up: Cream oder Compact-Stiftung: 18 Monate, Verdecker: 12-18 Monate, Blush: 2 Jahre, Pulver Lidschatten: 2 Jahre, Lidstrich: 2 Jahre, Liquid eyeliner: 3-6 Monate, Mascara: 3 Monate, Lippenstift: 2 Jahre, Lip Gloss: 18-24 Monate.
2. Kaufen neuen Make-up-Tools hin und wieder. Angesichts der Haltbarkeit der genannten Make-ups, müssen Sie immer stellen Sie sicher, dass neue Elemente, nicht nur weil Sie es so spannend zu werden, neue zu kaufen, sondern auch weil sie sich gesünder für die Haut. Wenn Sie noch, dass Mascara, die Sie zurückgekauft in High School, werfen sie weg ... JETZT! Es wird nicht nur Ihre Unordnung Kit, aber es muss entwickelt haben, alle Arten von Bakterien all diesen Jahren.
3. Halten Sie Ihre machen Kit staubfrei und sauber immer bis nach dem Gebrauch. Obwohl sich Kits sind abgedichtet und geschlossen, es gibt Make-up, verlassen Sie unter Umständen am Anfang der Schublade, während Sie wurden in Eile zu verlassen, für das Büro oder die Partei. Halten Sie sie nach Gebrauch, denn sie können durch Bakterien sammeln sich Staub oder Luft-borne Schadstoffe, die möglicherweise dazu führen, dass Sie Allergien oder Irritationen in der Zukunft.
4.Clean Ihr Make-up-Set hin und wieder. Also müssen Sie hatte das alte vertrauenswürdig machen, da Kit High School, und Sie haben es nie gereinigt, mit Ausnahme von ein paar Wischtücher hin und wieder. Glauben Sie mir, wenn man es unter dem Mikroskop, werden Sie sehen können alle Arten von Bakterien, einschließlich Staphylokokken, das ist eine häufige Ursache für Allergien Haut hässlich. Die meisten Häuser anfällig für Bakterien sind Make-up Deckel, Schwämme, blushers und Make-up Bürsten, und die Gesamtheit der ungereinigte Kit.
Wenn Sie sich schuldig, alle diese, machen Sie sich einen Gefallen und saubere up your kit gründlich, oder besser noch, werfen alles raus, und kauft eine neue Kollektion. Und beim nächsten Mal, werden mehr bewusst mit Ihrem Make-up. Auch Kosmetika sind im engsten Kontakt zu unserer Haut, so ist es wichtig, dass wir lernen alles über Kosmetik und wie man von ihnen.
They say that men are attracted to red lips because women's lips are flushed with blood when they are horny. This sounds true enough, but I can't back that up with anything other than word of mouth (well, I probably could, but I haven't done the research). But lately, the color of seduction in terms of lips hasn't been red but, surprisingly, orange.
The orange temptress look seems to go hand-in-hand with revived-grunge, disheveled, Cory Kennedy non-style. Nonetheless, I think it can be a sophisticated, playful lip color despite being associated with rich party girls who takes their clothes off too much. Maybe that was a bit harsh... It is hypocritical of me to judge girls who wear the same shade of lipstick as me, wouldn't it? Yeah, I bought into it, and I'm glad I did, it's one of the only shades of lipstick that I fully appreciate on myself. I should also mention that when scouring the web for pictures of orange lipped ladies, I did dare to venture to lastnightsparty. I know, I know, bad Laura. Well, chances are, unless you're brand new to this blog, you already know what I'm getting at, so enough with the commentary and here's:
Their Way
Don't you just love that picture of Agyness Deyn? Your eyes are just drawn to her face because of her pale hair and complexion. I guess this post is a little different because it isn't really about styling the orange lipstick, it's just about styling in it. Anyway, here's me 'stylin':
My Way
Please excuse the school shirt. It's tacky and uncomfortable but once in a while a person gets too lazy to do anything about that.
This is probably the one thing that I have given out more than I do campaign brochures! They are SO easy!
Now I admit, it did take me a couple of sheets to get used to the application that was easiest for me, but with 14 sheets in a package, 2 to burn isn't bad. At least to me it isn't. These are so versatile, you can put them on dry for a daytime look, or you can wet the back of the tissue for a bold effect. Add a fun eyeliner and some SuperShock mascara, BOOM you are done and out the door!
I can honestly say that over my time as a make-up user, I have probably purchased a couple of hundred dollars in eye shadows alone, trying to get colors that match and mesh together well. This is completely fool-proof in that area, the colors are already matched on the sheet.
Eu juro que até tentei tirar foto dos meus olhos, mas ficaram rédiculas hahahaha.
Bem...eu posso afirmar que os cílios ficam bem levantadinhos, mas cuidado na hora de aplicar, senão seus olhos vão parecer de boneca MESMO! RS... Ele dá um UP bem bacana, mas se vc, gosta de produtos à prova d´água, choro, etc, não recomendo, pois ele sai facilmente com qualquer demaquilante (usei o da Vult, que foi o último que comprei).
Eu, particularmente, não uso NADA à prova d´água, pois uso lentes de contato, e na hora que o produto começa a me irritar, tenho que tirá-lo com FACILIDADE, não importa aonde eu esteja! (fora que quando borra, só reza braba pra tirar né?).
Eu vou usá-lo em conjunto com outro rímel que tenho para dar volume...acho que vai ficar mto, mas mto lindo MESMO!
bjs,
Beauty is a relative term. I have seen many women who are beautiful, who would never make the cover of a magazine, due to their size, shape, or age. True beauty comes from within. It is confidence, passion for life, spirituality, compassion, and love that evolves from a place deep within; a place where one has worked through many issues and conflicts to arrive at a place of self-acceptance.
I could spend every day critiquing the flaws in my face and body, or I can make a conscious decision to embrace life and take care of what I have been given. Being that I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck, I learned long ago how to take good care of my skin. I can justifiably say that I have tried hundreds of skin care products, both high end and inexpensive. I’ve found very little difference in the two. I can with absolute certainty say, that regardless of the products that you use, my top three makeup tips actually come before you ever put makeup on! If you take great care of your skin, any makeup you use will give you a better result.
1. Cleanse - your skin morning and night. Oils and dirt can build up and clog your pores, creating unsightly blemishes.
2. Moisturize - your face and neck daily. Stay ahead of the aging game by being proactive in fighting it.
3. Hydrate - your skin by drinking lots of water. Dehydrated skin looks dull and lifeless.
Yes, my solution is simple. It would probably shock you to know that, having tried all of those products through the years, the most effective cleanser for my skin is Dove soap. I hear you gasping, “Soap is terrible for your skin.” Dove is a conditioning moisture bar poured into a soap mold. It also rates a “0″ on the scale of toxicity to your body. My skin is smooth, soft, and wrinkle free. I’ve used it for twenty years, and it works great for me. Experiment with various products to see which ones work for your skin, but be aware that many of them contain harmful chemicals, parabens, and phylates.
Click here to check out your personal care products for toxicity at Cosmetics Database. It is a great source for learning about the safety of our skin care products.
I am feeling a bit gold today, it is such a radiant and rich look. Doesn't take too much which is nice- subtle touches of the right hues in the right places is all.
I had been in a lingerie fashion show where the theme was wild animals. I was assigned the leopard (much to my pleasing) and simply loved the make up Morgan, the make up artist, had created.
Above and beside are photos of her work (it was a late show and some champagne and enjoying the evening afterwards makes one a bit tired- even so I think the make up held up quite alright).
Anyway, remembering this look, I allowed it to inspire one of my own. Though the side bronze is quite beautiful and great for show- it is a bit much for day to day.
So Instead I thought to make it softer with some bronzed gold coloring just covering the lids and underlining below. Gives it a bit of a bold pop- but then a soft finish so it works for the day.
For the lips I used a favorite of mine- a gold lipstick that is slightly sheer and more than anything gives a complimenting golden shimmer to the natural lip color. The make-up I use is Guerlain, they have some wonderful bronzes and golds that work beautifully together.
I love a little gold indulgence. Much love.
As a scholar who has done a fair amount of work in the areas of beauty and body image, and as one wh
As a scholar who has done a fair amount of work in the areas of beauty and body image, and as one who critiques what I term "the beauty imperative" of our culture, some might be surprised to find out that I am a make up junkie. In fact, I have often been accused of not being a "real feminist" because I like wearing make up. I am aware my predilections for mascara are likely due to my similarly make up crazy mom. I recall the thrill of making up with her collection from a young age. I would get all gussied up and then go out and pet our pigs or talk to the cows about the troubles of my young life. Mind you, I loved horseback riding, swimming, and getting dirty just as much as I loved dips into mom's make up drawer. Neither of my parents ever suggested I should or should not wear make up, nor that because I was a girl I was limited in any way (thanks mom and dad).
Later, though, I had relationships in which partners suggested I was "prettier without make up" or that they wanted to see "the real me." Well, a person who loves make up is the real me, damnit! I don't always wear it, I don't feel like I have to wear it, but I like to wear it. I am annoyed when people (usually men) suggest I don't "need it." Of course I don't need it! I don't need espresso everyday either but damn if I don't enjoy it.
I do not wear make up (when I do) to play up to the male gaze or be viewed as "properly feminine" - if anything, in my job as a women's studies professor, I am more suspect BECAUSE I wear make up. Last semester, many of my advanced feminist theory students repeatedly challenged me regarding make up. Several of them seemed to believe my fondness for eye shadow made me a sellout (because who cares how well you know your Butler or Hallberstam when you're eyelids are colored hot pink, right?). The problem I see with this attitude is that telling women they should not be wearing make up is no better than telling them they have to. Shouldn't we be able to choose for ourselves? Isn't feminism supposed to be about choice? Heck, if I had my way, men could more readily choose to wear make up if they wanted to. Why should women get all the eyeliner fun? (For a good historical analysis of changing attitudes towards make up and whether or not women/men should wear it, see this post here. Note also the ire and passion this topic generates in the comments section...)
The emphasis Jessica Valenti puts on feminism being about choices, even when those choices include fishnets or red lipstick, is one of the reasons I like the book Full Frontal Feminism. While I personally find high heels fashion torture, and certainly don't think elementary school girls should be crippled by them, I don't see a women in stilettos and think, "Oh, that poor unenlightened dupe." Likewise, I understand why young girls might WANT to wear make up (and even high heels) - yet, as with other choices, I think we as adults should promote girls (and boys) to question why they want to do such things.
Feminism has an ugly history of imposing all sorts of appearance-based rules - no bras, no shaving, no make up. Well, sorry bell hooks, but as a double D woman, I find going braless a back-breaking experience. And, I know I have learned this from our shave happy society, but I prefer all my underarms without hair (even the male ones).
In the world of women's studies and feminist scholarship, beauty norms and practices have been scrutinized since the get go. For instance, Mary Wollstonecraft warned women about the dangers of valuing themselves based on their looks and her daughter, Mary Shelley, went on to write Frankenstein, a classic novel that questioned appearance based judgments.
Today, there is lots of talk of "empowerment" and claims that owning one's beauty, sexuality, desire, etc are feminist moves. However, while I agree that women should be able to choose whether they want to look or dress certain ways, I also think it is imperative to remember the socio-cultural contexts in which these choices are made. We don't live in a vacuum, and as much as we like to resist or subvert the white supremacist, capitalist, heteronormative, patriarchy, we are all still shaped by it. Thus, even those choices that seem "free" or "empowering" are enacted within a sexist society. As such, when a female looks a certain way, even if she chooses that look and finds it empowering, she may be variously objectified, ridiculed, exploited, etc. So, I can see why some feminists claim that wearing make up is anti-feminist. Yet, if as feminists we judge other women's feminist cred based on whether they wear mascara or shave their legs, aren't we enacting a gaze that is just as judgmental as the traditional male gaze? As a colleague of mine writes,
"It is an obvious point, but keeping women in the habit of judging each other and themselves by the way they look just keeps us from banding together and overthrowing the whole system! ...Your scholarship and work is questioned/judged based on what you look like; are you 'brown' enough, are you 'peripheral' enough, are you too 'pretty'..."
This idea that one is "too pretty to be a feminist" arises quite often. It goes against the "feminists are all ugly, hairy man-haters" mantra. Each semester, I hear versions of this belief. Last semester, a student shared that her dad asked her "So how ugly is your professor?" when she got home from her first Introduction to Women's Studies Class. Yet, I am not sure that students surprised by the fact that I am not "ugly" is a good thing even though it might help to chip away at the ugly feminist stereotype. Instead, I wish students would question such norms and social constructions all together. What the heck is ugly anyhow? (I disagree with the premise that our definitions of beauty are hard-wired that the new book Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty by Nancy Etcoff makes). One person's pretty is another person's ugly, and as the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I understand that wearing make up is not without its problems. For example, recent work in ecofeminism and other areas reveals the environmental implications of everything from nail polish to product packaging. However, wearing make up seems like small potatoes compared to so many other social ills and norms. As a post over at Feministe notes, the "patriarchy" benefits from our squabbles over these relatively minor issues. In the post, Octogalore writes, "If ‘the patriarchy' were reading many of these posts, they'd be chortling right now. Fiddling while Rome burns!" I agree that we often spend far too much time on trivialities and not enough trying to dismantle patriarchy and other oppressive social systems. Examining beauty norms and practices is certainly important, but looking at the wider causes of our obsessions with appearance seems far more fruitful than trying to wrench the lip gloss from every female hand. Further, in today's era of infinite war, widespread genocide, and toxic dumping, it seems splitting hairs over bodily decoration is a bit trivial. (This is in fact while I have redirected my more recent research at issues of militarization and corporatism rather than at beauty and body image issues.)
Of course patriarchy, consumer capitalism, sexism, racism, classism and ageism perpetuate oppressive beauty norms and bodily expectations, but the wearing or not-wearing of make up need not necessarily bolster all of the above. The enjoyment of adorning the body goes as far back as recorded history, and I for one enjoy adornment practices. I feel they are part of being an embodied entity. Like tattoos or piercings or fashion, make up is another way to decorate and enjoy one's body. If it is not enjoyable to the individual body, then by all means that body should not feel pressured to wear make up. As with tattoos, make up is not for everyone. It is perhaps a bit like alcohol - not necessarily good for you, but enjoyable. (Now, the puritan minded out there might claim that using any sort of alcohol or drugs is indicative of some sort of dangerous dependency, but that is fodder for another post...)
This to make up or not to make up is a subject that is very complex and could take longer to dissect than all of Hamlet's soliloquies. Thus, I will end this already long post with the mere claim that while I don't think wearing make up is a feminist act, (as this post at Alternet suggests), I don't think NOT wearing it is one either.
