This is my first copy of MixTape and I am very excited. Just the dual covers by Blair and Daria are reason enough to love it.

The second piece of mail was a delivery attempted notice from the post office. What's exciting about that? It meant that the lens I rented was that much closer to being in my hot little hands. The next morning, I took the package slip with me and picked up the lens on my way to work. Brad, acting as the voice of reason, made sure I didn't leave the house with my camera. He knew full well that if I picked up the lens and had my camera with, I'd skip work and take photos all day. Good man. I had a meeting, anyway.

I did, however, come home earlier than usual and tore into the package. I think I'm in love.  It is a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro.

Better yet, Brad has acknowledged how fun it is and has stopped scoffing at my pipe dream to own one someday.

BossPrefs v2.10b, aunque todavía sea una beta, funciona perfectamente, yo lo tengo instalado.

Antes, con la versión 1.1.4 JB, tenia algunas mas opciones, que imagino que ira sacando poco a poco.

Ademas, puedes poner 4 iconos en el dock, de esos iconos que no usas nunca pero viene bien tenerlos.

Esta bastante bien, para activar y desactivar el SSH, es donde mas lo uso. Se puede instalar desde Cydia desde:

The city of Allegheny, Pennsylvania, no longer exists, having been annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907. But miracle of miracles, this post office survives. The Italian Renaissance building, designed by William Aiken, opened in 1897 as the main post office for Allegheny and was saved from destruction by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. It is listed with the National Register of Historic Places, and its four-story, copper domed rotunda stands over the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, recognized as a regional asset for its adaptive use of historic property.

I wanted my newly installed Ubuntu server to check for updates every day and then automatically update itself if there were any new updates found. I search the web trying to find an existing solution that would work out of the box for me. But I am of course very picky of what I want, so I could not found anything that met all my needs:

• Automatically check for updates every day.
• Automatically download and install any updates that were found.
• Report both success and failures to my e-mail and show me in the subject if the update failed or succeeded.
• Use an external smtp-server with authentication.

As I am also trying to learn the Ruby programming language, besides from Linux, I decided to use it to create my update script.

Installing Ruby

Ruby is not installed by default on Hardy Heron but can easily be installed from the Ubuntu repositories:

Set the script to run every day
Obviously you need to change the mail settings in the script as the comment suggest. Then save the script, I named it "autoupdate". To run the script on a daily basis copy it to "/etc/cron.daily". And don't forget to set execute permissions on the script (and as I have the password stored in the file I also removed all permissions from "others":

sudo chmod 770 autoupdate


Test the script
The easiest way to test the script is of course to just execute it:
sudo ./autoupdate

If you really want to make sure that it will execute when executed in the same way as when execute by the cron job you could run:

sudo run-parts /etc/cron.daily

Note that this will execute all scripts in the cron.daily folder. Another side note is that it probably won't run with the same permissions as when executed from the cron job, and it will probably take a long time to execute.

Now check your mailbox or the log files for the result:

cat /var/log/aptitude

Hopefully someone out there can benefit from this script as it is, or if you're like me; tweak it to suite your own needs ;)

Yes, you’ve heard of Phishing, but what’s this Vishing you ask?

The IC³ (Internet Crime Complaint Center) describes Vishing as an attempt to persuade consumers either by email, text message, or a telephone call, purportedly from their credit card/debit card company, to divulge their Personally Identifiable Information (PII), claiming their account was suspended, deactivated, or terminated.

In one scenario, recipients are asked to contact their bank by calling a telephone number provided in the e-mail, or alternatively, by an automated telephone recording. When the potential victim calls the telephone number, they’re greeted with “Welcome to the bank of …” and then requested to enter their card number in order to resolve a pending security issue.

In the email scam attempt, in order to persuade the recipient that it is not a scam, the fraudulent e-mail sets out all the caveats the potential victim should be aware of in dealing with this type of email. Who would consider that a scam artist would warn you that a bank would not contact customers to obtain their PII by e-mail, mail, and instant messenger?

To further convince the recipient of the validity of the email, it goes on to state that the recipients should not provide sensitive information when requested in an e-mail, and not to click on embedded links, claiming they could contain “malicious software aimed at capturing login credentials.”

Would this convince you that this email was genuine? It just might.

A new version of this scam recently reported to IC³ involves the sending of text messages to cell phones claiming the recipient’s on-line bank account has expired. The message instructs the recipient to renew their on-line bank account by using the link provided.

These types of attacks against financial institutions, and consumers, are occurring with such frequency that IC³ has called the situation “alarming”.

Minimum safety precautions you should take.

Consider every email, telephone call, or text message requesting your PII as a scam.

Never click on embedded email or cell phone links.

When contacting your bank; use a telephone number from your statement, a telephone book, or another independent source.

A la hora de realizar una selección de personal eficiente, un departamento de Recursos Humanos debe planificar correctamente unos objetivos, preparar una serie de competencias adecuadas al puesto y función, y establecer unos criterios de corte que servirán para descartar fácilmente bastantes candidaturas que no se adecúan al perfil evitándonos pérdidas de tiempo. Es duro, pero el mundo de la sección de personal funciona de esta manera, siempre a contrareloj. La mayoría de veces no hay tiempo para estudiar debidamente a todos los candidatos, y estoy convencido que muchas veces se descarta al mejor, pero este trabajo es así, mal que nos pese a muchos.

Por eso debemos de ser muy cuidadosos con los detalles de nuestros currículum a la hora de presentar nuestra candidatura a un determinado puesto. Hace tiempo leí que un departamento de Recursos Humanos que se encontraba inmerso en la búsqueda de un profesional con altos conocimientos en Internet, había establecido como critierio de corte los dominios de nuestras cuentas de e-mail. En concreto consideraban que el insertar en nuestro curriculum una cuenta de Hotmail, denotaba el desconocimiento de la Red y por ello eran descartados. De este modo filtraron a gran parte de la currícula que les había llegado. Seguramente, a la hora de definir las competencias del puesto, una de ellas era la capacidad de análisis de las herramientas que Internet pone a nuestra disposición. Tenemos una gran cantidad de ofertas en cuestión de servicios de correo electrónico, y sinceramente, la más sencilla y la más corriente para todo el grueso de la comunidad internauta es Hotmail. El no buscar mejores alternativas, como las de Yahoo, o por supuesto Gmail, y escoger Hotmail, identificaba a un candidato con carencias en cuestión de análisis de contenidos y servicios, ya que había escogido la opción del montón sin darse cuenta que existen alternativas mucho mejores. Y precisamente el perfil del puesto de trabajo era el análisis y la comparativa de contenidos. Descartado en menos de un segundo.

Puede ser que aquel candidato fuera perfectamente válido, pero no supo leer entre líneas lo que se exigía para el puesto. Habrá muchos que critiquéis estos métodos, o que déis como contacto en vuestros curriculums cuentas de Hotmail y no pase absolutamente nada, la selección de personal tiene estas cosas. Pero sí que hay que quedarse con el hecho en sí, los detalles importan mucho más de lo que pensamos, y el prestarles atención puede salirnos muy beneficioso en cualquier situación.

Heute Nachmittag hat GoogleMail die 7000 MB Grenze an Speicher überschritten. Damit ist es nach wie vor der größte, kostenlose E-Mail Speicher im Internet. ;) Zur Zeit kommen täglich 3,5 MB an Speicher dazu. Am 24.09.2008 wird dann die 7GB Marke geknackt (1GB = 1024MB).

The last few months have brought me back home by way of Rochester NY, Nashville and Knoxville TN, New York NY, Brookline and Boston MA. I have since curated an exhibition, played in my first pub-stage rock concert, peed in 8 different states, drank wine made in a South Philly basement, played catch up with handfuls of old friends, chased jobs and girls and my own tail, won $15 in a game of poker, read a few books, thought a lot about contemporary publishing, was amazed by Antonio López García, ate raw vegan food, realized that the world is smaller than it seems, danced in a supermarket aisle, found out that no matter how hard I try to fake it I'm still too shy, saw a total of 134 live music performances, checked missed connections 4 times, sent out a handful of postcards, saw one of the most misguided exhibitions at the Met, and buried something in the ground for someone else to find.

And now, I am back in Pennsylvania waiting to hear back about a job and the next addition to the list.

I am a bit exhausted but trying to power through it. Still trying to embrace the beauty of a fall in perpetuity. Enjoyed Philadelphia's First Friday and an after-art trip to Sugar Mom's.

Sometimes unexpected things come in the mail- like sponge animals.

Flera mottagare av mejlet menar att partiledningens information är felaktig, och syftar till att vilseleda moderaternas medlemmar.

Det börjar andas desperation från partiledningen och kommunikationsförmågan i den här frågan bör verkligen ifrågasättas. Eller om man nu kan kalla envägsinformation för kommunikation.

Nu är varken en intern diskussion inom moderaterna igång eller en kommunikation med medborgarna.

Enligt Fredrik Bergqvist är moderaternas partiledning mycket väl medveten om att kritiken mot FRA-lagen jäser i de egna leden. Men de slår dövörat till.

Är det inte sådant som brukar gå under benämningen maktfullkomlighet?

- Partiledningen har ju känt till att det finns kritik men valt att inte lyssna. Det här blir ju ännu mer anmärkningsvärt med tanke på vår vårkampanj, "Välkommen till verkligheten". Man ska vara ute i verkligheten och lyssna på vad folk tycker, men när det gäller FRA vill man inte lyssna längre, fortsätter han.

Ja vem minns inte den ena politikern efter den andra som radades upp och sjöng suspekta "barnsånger" på förskolor och som skulle visa de nya moderaterna från sina mest folkliga och verklighetsförankrade sidor. Idag är bilden något förändrad. Där har man stängt in sig i hörnet, håller händerna för öronen och blundar och hoppas på att problemen ska försvinna bara man ignorerar dem tillräckligt intensivt.

Detta är en politisk katastrof för moderaterna som nästan lyckats framstå som folkliga. Över en fråga och en sommar har man raderat den bilden och ersatt den av bilden av maktfullkomlighet och envägskommunikation.

Reinfeldt och partiledningen manar medlemmarna till Ordning i klassen!
