I have installed a couple of e-commerce websites in the past and I keep coming back to osCommerce. I find it to be powerful and yet very usable. Easy to setup and configure. I have recently tried to setup Magento and I found it to be beautiful and very robust. But a little more overhead that I am willing to put up with. And most of the time I set the sites up for people that aren't technically savvy. I have even thought about setting up an osCommerce site to sell my crap around the house. Like a virtual garage sell.

Meta Tagger
H Tagger
Bilde tagger
Sidens tekster og innhold

Well apparently there was/is a lot of confusion in the Magento community regarding "Virtual Products" vs. "Downloadable Products." While the roadmap and the buzz seemed to indicate that they were going to be basically the same, more research shows that the developers had to split "Downloadable Products" out of the 1.1 release as it was not yet ready. "Virtual Products" are simply products that do not require shipping (perhaps an event registration). The developers say that "Downloadable Products" are high on the list, and should be in the next release. They may be too late.

Open Source Shop System Magento

4. The top-level Magento directory (the one you uploaded the decompressed files to) must have the correct permissions in order for the installer to proceed. To do so, navigate to the directory with your FTP client. Then locate the function “Change Permissions” or “Change Mode” in your FTP client and select it. Once you find the function, you must set the permissions so the web server can write to this file. There are two typical ways of representing file permissions in Linux:

As a number (eg, 755)

As a series of permissions categorized into user, group, and other

If your FTP client uses the first representation, set the permissions on the directory to be 777, or 0777. If your FTP client uses the second representation, set the permissions as shown in the image below.

For more details about permissions please see this article: Magento Filesystem Permissions

5. If your server primarily runs PHP4 then you will require the PHP5 CGI Binary in order to continue. Please read the PHP5 CGI Setup appendix below and complete it before continuing to Step 6.

6. Now use your web browser to surf to the Magento installation wizard. If you’ve uploaded the Magento files to http://www.example.com/magento/, then the wizard will be located here: http://www.example.com/magento/.

7. Since you are using the installer version, the downloader will be the first installation process to run. It will attempt to download all the necessary components for a complete Magento install. If you notice a few “Warning” messages zip by on the green-on-black screen, don’t worry too much about it. The installer will detect an overall success or failure, and if you see the “Continue Magento Installation” button at the end (usually takes about 5 minutes) then the process has succeeded. Click the “Continue Magento Installation” button to continue on to the regular installer wizard.

8. Once in the wizard, you can configure various system-level settings that are required for Magento to function. Most options will be intelligently guessed for you, but you’re free to override any settings that don’t look right. At the very least, change the database parameters in the first box, “Database connection”, to match those of the database you set up in Step 3.

9. Success! You’ve completed a Magento installation. You can now visit the administration backend and begin configuring your new online store.

After much searching, tinkering, installing, re-installing, re-re-installing, etc., I've sort of narrowed down some options that look like really good possibilities for open-source, fully featured eCommerce solutions.

Magento: Very obviously an extremely professional product. Though relatively new, it's got TONS of support and buzz. Right now I see two drawbacks: it looks like it'll take a good bit of tweaking and designing to make it look REALLY good (it looks "just good," though professional, out of the box), and it does not yet support "virtual products" (aka digital downloads). For the first, we've got a crack team of website gurus here at GCC, and if they ever feel over their heads, we can hire some outside help to get it up and running. For the second, the Magento team promises that virtual products will be an option in the next release, slated for sometime this July (and the alpha I tried out does indeed have it as an option, just not a working option yet)

PrestaShop: Looks very, VERY nice out of the box, was EXTREMELY easy to use/customize. Probably wouldn't need any outside help to make it look how we want, with plenty of flash (the aesthetic, not necessarily the technology). Downsides: it's currently in Release Candidate 4 for the stable 1.0 version. Hopefully that means full stable coming very soon. Downloadable product size limited to 7MB, so we'd be restricted to users downloading PDFs with links/passwords to actual product. Also, on my first run (today), the whole backend/admin panel suddenly stopped working. Not sure what's going on. Time for one of those re-installs.
*update* before even posting this, I checked again, and was able to get to it. I blame our lack of good connection here at work, as it had been timing out

Drupal with Ubercart: Actually has pretty much everything we need. TONS of free modules, ability to have calendar with workshops scheduled, final releases of the software, all the options we are looking for. Drawback: it just doesn't seem as professional as the other two. Oddly enough, it seems like a CMS that has an eCommerce layer on top of it (hmm, wonder why that is). Things are relatively clearly laid out.... it just doesn't FEEL as nice as the others (we're talking admin panel here). The store itself should be pretty easy to make it look nice.

SO HERE'S MY QUESTION: Has anyone used any of these, and can provide feedback/advice on the good, bad, and ugly of using them in production? These seem to be three of the top dogs in the open-source eCommerce community, but are there others that are so amazing that I simply must check them out? Let me know!

1. Untuk localhost server, saya menggunakan XAMPP

extension=php_pdo.dll
extension=php_pdo_mysql.dll
extension=php_curl.dll
extension=php_mcrypt.dll

3. Download Magento Commerce

magento-1.0.19870.1.zip

$client = new Varien_Http_Client($url.$prefix);

Just now, I tried to deploy Magento, an e-commerce CMS, version 1.0.19870.1. Although it's just for fun, I really want to try this CMS, because in a review (I forget where I read the review) Magento regarded better than osCommerce. However, in the installation process, I met this kind of error.

Url "http://localhost/magento/" is not accessible

Error parsing body - doesn't seem to be a chunked message

Where "http://localhost/magento" was my Base URL.

Fortunately, it can be solved easily. I just had to add'"index.php/'" in <path>\magento\app\code\core\Mage\Install\Model\Installer\Config.php line 139 so that the original syntax:

$client = new Varien_Http_Client($url.$prefix);

will be like this:

$client = new Varien_Http_Client($url.'index.php/'.$prefix);

It will solve the problem.

(I think the developer just forget to add that part of syntax.. :p)

I’ve been using Magento Commerce since it’s early early preview release back in August o

I've been using Magento Commerce since it's early early preview release back in August of 07'. I've been a junkie ever since. It took me about an hour playing with the framework to decide that THIS was the solution i'd been waiting for. Not only is it open-source, a godsend for developers, but the ingenuity, the community, and the true MVC nature of the framework just rubbed me in all the right places.

Any developer knows that the E-commerce space has sucked for some time now. Yes... sucked. Been crap. Nothing to get excited over. And for myself... the majority of my clients are small, up and coming businesses, entrepreneurs themselves who don't have the budget for an over-priced ASP or custom solution. I like those people, I like their drive and ambition.. and I'm happy I can provide them with something to let them bang out with the big shots.

My most recent Magento project www.kanemarie.com, is a luxury jewelry retailer. Previously hosted by a ASP-driven box, I took on the project to really push magento to its limits. I've been happy with the results. Lot more work to go though. Magento just makes you WANT to code. Your not stuck within a limited system like say an OScommerce, or X-cart.... trust I've was a whore for them both in the past.

Why do I love Magento? From a design standpoint... you can literarally skin this baby anyway you wish. The Design is TRUELY seperate from the code. So CSS fanatics dig in. No need to mix PHP code within some smarty template with your xhtml. That in itself is a MAJOR improvement.

Another improvement is the code-base itself, the team behind magento has put alot of time into developing a smart, saavy system that can deliver results amongst a variety of e-commerce stores. Multiple language support, Multiple stores, Smart browsing via layered navigation, RSS product feeds, tagging and reviewing products, comparing products, product wishlists.... even Product Image Zoom is standard right out of the box. Impressive? Trust me theres more once you pop the hood.

But I think I started this blog and made blogging about magento my first post because of the community behind this project. Like I said, I've been playing with Magento since last August during its early preview release and I've had the pleasure of not only talking to the team.. but several developers, store owners, and cool people alike within the forums and magento blog. There's a surge of support that's uncanny for a software project this early in its lifespan. I'm thrilled to say I'm apart of the community, and invite any other developers to join as well. Ask and answer, show off your sites, and enjoy what definitely is E-commerce evolved. I sure am.

Go Go Magento!!

Look forward to more posts on this blog about specific tips and tricks with developing e-commerce sites with magento. Feel free to message me on the magento forum or send me a msg via Twitter as well.

My previous post was published before the launch of Magento - Preview Version and was introducing the features those were going to be implemented (and now have been implemented). The preview version was released on 31st August, 2007. So it has been very long time since my last post but busy schedule of life was'nt giving me a single moment for blogging.

And yesterday, on 31st March, 2008, long awaited Production version of Magento Commerce has been released.

Since the release of first preview version, the updates was being released frequently. With every release, Magento was shining more and more. The progress is incredible in very less time. Magento provides lot of exciting features like Multiple Stores and Websites, Google Checkout support, Single Page Checkout, Shipping to multiple addresses in one order and many more.

Varien - Magento Company has already announced parnership and collaboration with Parallels and Media Temple to deliver Magento 1.0 through a one-click installation wizard.

As a developer, the most impressive thing I found in magento is its flexibility for customization. As I have already mentioned in my previous post, magento is developed on Zend Framework and uses MVC architecture, which makes magento easier to maintain. Apart from that, magento also provides out of the box solution for customization. That means, magento can be customized as you need without modifying a single line of code in existing core modules. Instead, you can develop your own modules with specific configuration which overwrite the behavior of existing core modules. I love this way because it provides flexibility for upgrading magento to newer version.

So, on this occasion it really worths if they say:

Open Source eCommerce has officially evolved.

$> for i in *.csv; do iconv -f TIS-620 -t UTF-8 $i > "${i}".temp; done

$> for i in *.temp; do mv "$i" "${i/.temp}"; done

UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)
