“L’iPhone 2.0 è quanto di più blindato si sia mai visto. Andiamo sul tecnico e vediamo di spiegare come e perchè siamo giunti a questa conclusione:

Il Chip ARM 1176JZF, che equipaggia l’iPhone anche nella versione 2G, ha al suo interno una funzionalità chiamata “TrustZone”, interamente basata sulle specifiche del Trusted Computing, o Palladium. Mentre nelle versioni precedenti questa funzionalità non era MAI stata implementata, a partire dal Firmware 2.0 Beta 7 ogni singola parte di software dell’iPhone si basa su queste specifiche.

Ora, come funziona il Trusted Computing e cosa comporta? Semplicissimo. Wikipedia ci viene in aiuto e spiega in modo esauriente:

“L’integrità del sistema viene protetta da manomissioni e falsificazioni grazie a una sofisticata tecnica crittografica che impedisce a emulatori software (ad esempio driver) di avviare una transazione sicura con un programma, un dispositivo hardware o un sistema remoto. Ciò sarà realizzabile mediante una coppia di chiavi RSA a 2048 bit che identifica univocamente ogni TPM. Tale coppia di chiavi, detta Endorsement Key (”Chiave di approvazione”), è diversa per ogni chip e viene generata al momento della produzione del chip. In alcuni casi, ma non sempre, è revocabile (e dunque modificabile) solo con una password fornita dal produttore. Il TPM è realizzato in modo che non esistano funzioni in grado di estrarre direttamente tale chiave, e lo stesso dispositivo hardware (secondo le specifiche) riconoscerà di essere stato manomesso. All’atto dell’instaurazione di una transazione sicura, i TPM coinvolti dovranno firmare un numero casuale per certificare la loro identità e la propria adesione alle specifiche TCG. Ciò potrà, ad esempio, impedire la falsificazione dell’IMEI di un cellulare rubato.

Le credenziali di Approvazione, Conformità e Piattaforma possono generare, su richiesta del proprietario, una Attestation Identity Key (AIK, “chiave di attestazione dell’identità”) univoca da sottoporre a una Autorità di Certificazione Questa funzionalità potrà estendersi fino alla creazione di una vera e propria infrastruttura a chiave pubblica (PKI) hardware e all’identificazione univoca di ogni dispositivo conforme alle specifiche TCG.”

Ora ci sono un paio di cosette da aggiungere: primo è che sull’iPhone l’unica Certification Authority accreditata è ovviamente Apple, per cui ogni applicazione dovrà essere firmata digitalmente da Apple (via AppStore) per poter essere scaricata, installata ed eseguita sull’iPhone stesso. Come avevo accennato poco prima, già dalla beta 7 avevo scoperto che TUTTE le parti del firmare dell’iPhone giravano in modalità “Trusted” (persino la calcolatrice e l’applicazione Meteo e Borsa), e che questo avrebbe ovviamente rappresentato un problema insormontabile.

Bene, ora andiamo alle cose concrete e al PERCHÈ le aspettative di tutti i possessori di iPhone 2G cracckati o di chi pensa di procurarsi iPhone 3G da crackare saranno disilluse:

Jailbreak: per poter effettuare il jailbreak, che consiste nel mettere la partizione di sistema dell’iPhone in modalità “RW” (Lettura e Scrittura) è necessario modificare/sostituire UN file (/etc/fstab). Non appena verrà modificato questo file l’iPhone smetterà di funzionare, in quanto il TPM per come è strutturato ha al suo interno una sorta di FAM (File Alteration Monitor) che controlla in tempo reale ogni file (si, anche i famosi plist che qualche cialtrone dice di modificare). Basta un BIT cambiato e TUTTO si ferma. TUTTO.

Attivazione: l’attivazione “farlocca” di un iPhone consiste nella modifica di un file all’interno dell’iPhone. Idem come sopra.

SIM-Unlock: questa parte è controversa. In pratica sappiamo che la parte che blocca l’iPhone alle SIM di un solo carrier è nella BaseBand (la parte Modem/Audio/Bluetooth/WiFi), della quale conosciamo ogni singolo Bit. Questa parte ancora oggi nella Beta 8 non viene controllata, per cui è virtualmente possibile patchare la BB in modo che l’iPhone sia Sim Free, ovviamente escludendo la versione 3G, dato che ancora nessuno ha visto il nuovo bootloader e che, dai data sheet che siamo riusciti a recuperare ha una funzione di controllo del checksum per la quale se solo viene modificato un bit la Baseband non si avvia.

Ma vediamo gli scenari che ci si prospettano:

- iPhone 3G: analizzando la versione 7.7 beta di iTunes la nuova sequenza di attivazione avviene in due fasi. La prima fase viene effettuata in negozio tramite una versione “allargata” di iTunes 7.7 (o versione 8…) che è gia’ stata distribuita ai negozi, che in pratica consiste nello scambio di chiavi con Apple, e che serve a generare il certificato di Attivazione e che verrà poi utilizzato successivamente per identificare in modo UNIVOCO l’iPhone. Questa procedura viene supervisionata dal certificato del singolo iTunes, che appartiene al negoziante, per cui scordiamoci la “corruzione del commesso” o altro, visto che ne risponderebbe poi lui ad Apple, e questo dà comunque ad Apple la possibilità di REVOCARE le chiavi univoche dell’iPhone in qualsiasi momento e di rendere l’iPhone non funzionante. Ovviamente, dopo questo scambio di credenziali, una volta attivato l’iPhone, questo potrà essere riattivato millemila volte direttamente dall’Utente da casa con il proprio iTunes.

iPhone 2G cracckato e MAI attivato (il 99,99 degli iPhone in Italia): difficile che Apple inserisca del codice che controlli lo stato del bootloader, ad oggi non ce n`è traccia, per cui programmi come PWNAGE continuerebbero a funzionare, ma sostanzialmente se l’iPhone non è “legalmente attivato” non potrà MAI essere attivato, a meno di riuscire a decrittare la chiave PRIVATA di Apple - che non è presente da nessuna parte se non in Apple stessa. In soldoni, avremo tra le mani un iPhone che non andrà mai oltre la schermata di “emergency call”.

iPhone 2G crackato ma ATTIVATO legalmente: ci sono diversi iPhone in questo stato, ad esempio chi ha l’iPhone regolare ma che ogni tanto usa altre SIM. Se utilizziamo la SIM originale nessun problema, altrimenti ritorniamo al caso precedente: anche ammettendo che la 2.0 definitiva non controlli l’integrità della Baseband, sarà comunque impossibile attivare l’iPhone con una SIM differente da quella originale, e quando si cambierà la SIM, anche se la Baseband la accetterà, comunque iTunes si rifiuterà di attivarlo.

iPhone 2G legale: nessun problema.

Tenete conto che il Certificato di Attivazione del quale si parlava prima - oltre ad essere anch’esso digitalmente firmato da Apple e per questo non trasportabile - rappresenta la carta di identità dell’iPhone stesso, e l’accesso ad AppStore e iTunesStore avverrà SOLO con questa credenziale. Non è detto che questa limitazione sia attivata immediatamente, ma i test che abbiamo effettuato sulle 2.0 Beta lasciano spazio a pochi dubbi. Questo rappresenta una ulteriore cattiva notizia per chi ha l’iPhone 2G cracckato e pensa di continuare ad usarlo con il firmware 1.1.4: con tutta probabilità si scorderanno qualsiasi accesso a YouTube, iTunesStore, forse anche ad iTunes Stesso.

Se non avete capito che cosa significa tutto quello che c’è scritto sopra, questo pone una pietra TOMBALE sul futuro dell’iPhone “cracckato”.

Game Over.

Un’ultima cosa (one more thing…), per chi delira sul futuro dell’Installer: i ragazzi di NullRiver (quelli che hanno fatto Installer) NON hanno intenzione di rilasciare una versione di Installer per la 2.0, perchè per i motivi sovraesposti (Jailbreak impossibile) e per il fatto che ogni applicazione per poter girare sulla 2.0 deve essere digitalmente firmata da Apple (ce lo vedete l’installer in AppStore?) e resa appunto “trusted” passando da Apple / AppStore. Oltre a questo i produttori del software che trovate sull’Installer hanno già da tempo cominciato a lavorare con l’SDK per pubblicare in AppStore”

It's also now cheaper to upgrade the processor from 1.6GHz to 1.8GHz, $200 instead of $300, on either the flash model or the one with the standard hard drive.

PC companies have been interested in flash memory hard drives for some time, but it's not clear how well they are selling. Using flash memory instead of moving parts to store data improves the reliability of the system; hard drive failures are one of the most common problems experienced by notebook users.

But it's still very expensive to choose a flash drive over a regular hard drive, and potential customers might not be able to justify spending that extra $999, or even $599. Reliability is important, but so is price, and recent news that flash-memory drives are actually a drain on battery life won't help sell them as an upgrade option.

Os filmes do Chuck Norris são sempre daqueles onde o herói está lá tranqüilo fazendo seu trabalho, até que acontece alguma injustiça ou crime, ele sente sede de sangue e vai se vingar, sendo que na maioria das vezes nem por ele mesmo, mas pela honra dos que já morreram ou apanharam no filme.

O fato é que esses "fatos" sobre o ser supremo, Chuck Norris, já vem de algum tempo e viraram inspiração pra muita coisa na publicidade. O exemplo brazuca é a campanha "Verdades sobre o Gol" que fala sobre a mitificação de um produto.

Outro exemplo interessante é um filme da série "Will it blend?" da Blentec. Pra quem não conhece, os caras colocam qualquer coisa dentro do liquidificador e botam pra bater. Já vi de tudo aí, desde iPhone até facas Ginsu.

O que quero dizer com tudo isso é que, gosto muito de personificar as coisas. Acho esse um exercício bacana pra qualquer um que quer definir uma marca ou mesmo fazer escolhas na vida.

E o quanto mais personalidade tiverem suas escolhas, fica mais fácil se decidir o que você prefere e/ou definir quem você é. E fica mais fácil para as outras pessoas também. Toda essa discussão me lembra mais uma campanha ícone. Com quem você se parece? Mac or PC?

When EFiX first announced a USB device that would easily allow people to install Mac OS X onto PC's using Apple's original discs there was quite a bit of excitement and interest, but when they missed their original release date people got a little concerned.

According to EFiX lead engineer and CEO Vilhelm von Vnukov, things are under control and their V2 device will be released tomorrow with their V1 to follow three or four weeks later.

The V2 device will sell for around $125 US but will initially only be available in Taiwan and Bulgaria.

"If you want to share an external drive between a Mac and a Windows machine, you typically format the drive with a FAT32 partition. One problem you'll run into, however, is that you can run into a file size limit if you're dealing with really large files. NTFS gets around this limitation, but unfortunately the OS X NTFS driver only supports reading from NTFS partitions.

Thankfully, there's a NTFS Fuse driver which you can use with the MacFUSE userspace filesystem driver. It supports full read/write capability, so you can use an external disk to swap large files between your Windows and Mac machines.

It's a bit of a pain to install, but here's the quick rundown:

Download and install MacFUSE - Link
Just get the DMG file and run the contained installer.

Download and install Fink. You need this for obtaining and building the NTFS Fuse driver - Link
- run the installer within the DMG file
- drag the FinkCommander application to your Applications folder
Get NTFS Fuse driver. You need to configure Fink to use unstable packages and then install the ntfs-3g Fuse driver. Open a terminal and run the following commands.
- /sw/bin/fink configure
Use defaults, except answer YES to use the unstable tree
- /sw/bin/fink selfupdate
- /sw/bin/fink index
- /sw/bin/fink scanpackages
- /sw/bin/fink install ntfs-3g
Reboot
Mount your drive
- First, make sure it's unmounted in disk utility (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility - select drive - click unmount)
- Make a mount point: mkdir /Volumes/ntfsdrive
- Mount the drive: /sw/bin/ntfs-3g /dev/disk2s1 /Volumes/ntfsdrive
Replace /dev/disk2s1 with your external drive's device. You can find this in Disk Utility.

The last step is all that you'll need to repeat in the future to connect to your NTFS drive. After executing the mount command, the drive will appear on your desktop and you should be able to write files to it!"

Bootcamp would let me use windows in a dual boot environment but i'm wondering which version of windows i could use. Windows XP or Vista.

I wanna upgrade my PC thats currently on XP to Vista, i'm been thinking about it for awhile now and i think i will soon enough do it, theres not alot of problems i heard about anymore except on laptops. SP1 seems to really made it stable

What does that mean to you? Well if your using that favorite outdated browser that you know how to use and dont like change well you are at risk of web-based attacks, each new version that say for example Internet Explorer comes out with focuses on Security. When thinking about that 600 million people, how many of those people are older and only know how to turn on the computer, go to their favorite websites, once and awhile send email and thats it, most new computers you buy theses days come by default with automatic updates on and if you are using Internet Explorer as your default browswer then you are most likely running the most updated version, Firefox as well everytime you load up its browser checks for updates and pops up with a notice if your not running its current version, now going back to thoses 600 million people, how many of thoses people are running like Windows 95, 98 or ME, all OS's that is no longer supported and no longer able to be updated, 95,98,and ME is not able to run Internet Explorer 7 and you are stuck with Internet Explorer 6 which is outdated and no longer secure.

So whats so dangerous is running a insecure browser? In 2007, a previous study by Google uncovered more than three million malicious Web addresses (URLs) that initiate drive-by downloads!

Явно днес съм на някаква мак вълна, тъй като след филмчето се замислих и май нещата, които най- ме дразнят до момента са и тези, които всъщност ме кефят. А именно - липсата или простотата на разни неща (програмки), с които съм свикнал от години в windows. Именно липсата на разни конкретни концепции/програмки/настройки е вбесяваща на моменти, както и е най-готиното нещо за други програмки и концепции, където просто наистина имаш нужда да направиш 1 нещо и то прави точно 1 нещо (или, айде, 5, но не 500 като в повечето windows-ки софтуер).

Това всичкото идеално пасва на теорийката, която развиваше пича в презентацията. Това, което MS не разбират (явно) е, че повечето хора, които си взимат компютри в наши дни (т.е. нямат 10г опит примерно) обикновено искат да ползват машините си за изключително прости задачи (мултимедия, комуникации, fun и т.н.). Съответно за тях най-важните неща са - да е просто, надеждно и бързо. Колкото повече неща/функции има дадена програма, толкова повече се размива идеята какво точно прави.

Оливането с features не само плаши повечето home users, ами често прави и софтуера по-бавен. По тоя начин не само, че е пълно с неща, които не ползваш, ами и плащаш някакъв константен данък върху тях. Мисля, че това е и основния проблем с масовото приемане на Вистата (освен и насрания маркетинг - Apple са добър пример как може само с маркетинг да се правят чудеса)

Apple от друга страна правят играчки. Малки, прости и радващи. Нямаш 100,000 функции, за които не знаеш. Тия които ги имаш пък са прости и с лесна/малка конфигурация. Мънички, но изпипани в общия случай. Което радва. Особено когато идваш от другата крайност. За съжаление обаче, ако не си типичен home user или пък смяташ, че някои от концепциите с които си свикнал от години (десетки) са наистина ценни (като правото и на елементарен networking, right mouse button, maximize, multi-instance apps и т.н.) малко по малко почваш да осъзнаваш, че колкото и да е хубаво, ако не работиш в 2-3 области (все мултимедийни май) - реално не можеш да ползваш ОСа за истинска работа. (лирично отклонение: най-малкото поради факта, че се налага да се пише туториал за How to do Right-Click in Mac OS, очевидно хората имат нужда от лесен достъп до контекстните менюта! Толкова ли е сложно баси?! Или и в случая е по-важно да ги няма тези неща, щото требе да сме различни no matter what)

Аз лично се надявам и двете фирми да се променят към по-добре, тъй като и двете биха спечелили. Apple според мен ще намажат ако добавят съпорт за някои от горните, MS пък ще спечелят още повече ако успеят така да си модуляризират ОСа, че да могат да шипнат версия, орязана и бърза колкото един Leopard.
