A kind reader (Russ P.) shared with me his method for playing the Naval Ship’s Bells (for the

A kind reader (Russ P.) shared with me his method for playing the Naval Ship's Bells (for the daily watch) with us on my About page. I've been meaning to revisit this for a while, ever since my first discussion of Chimes on OsX. Since I tend to be a fan of the Un*x underpinnings of OsX, I tend to try and use common commands (that are already on your system, that you might not know about) to get these types of tasks done.

For a bit of a review of the methods I've used for the Westminster Chimes on OsX, please read my previous post on the topic: Westminster Chimes

I will be using a few of the same tricks here, but I won't be using one- AppleScript. For the Ships Bells, AppleScript really isn't needed. We'll be adding 8 lines to our Cron file (using the nice GUI program called Cronnix. Unlike the Westminster chimes, we don't have to do any computation to determine the number of times to chime a bell (for the hourly chimes).

First, snag some Ships Bells audio files. The files here: WxTide Ships Bells are already separated by the number of bells: 1-8 bells. You of course can use any Ships Bells audio files you like to accomplish this task. Just be aware that we're using an approach below that uses a separate file for each type of bell (1-8).

Second, head over to Wikipedia to read about the watches and when the bells are to chime: Wikipedia. Look closely at that first table... we'll use it in one second (save it).

Third, if you haven't done so yet, snag a copy of Play Sound which is a simple program, very easy to call, and we're going to use it like the following (you can try a variant of this in your terminal.app):

open -a /Applications/PlaySound.app /Users/yournamehere/soundfiles/2bells.wav

That's a nifty little one-liner that will play a file (here 2bells.wav) with an application you specify (here PlaySound.app). For more help on this command, in the terminal type "man open" (manual for open).

Now, the sneaky part is we're not even going to use AppleScript at all to play the ShipsBells! Haha! What we are going to do, however, is to run that CLI command directly from Cronnix (the program that keeps track of when to run things for us).

Fourth, make 8 lines in your Cron file (via Cronnix GUI) to play the bells at the appropriate times. I do this by simply following along with the table in the Wikipedia article, and adding commas for each field in the Cron file as needed...

An example.. the 1 Bell chime can be seen in the first line of the table in the wikipedia article... and here's the cron command for it:

30 0,4,8,12,16,18,20 * * * open -a /Applications/playsound/Play\ Sound.app /Users/yournamehere/ShipsBells/wxtide32_bells/1bells.wav

As you can see, the 1 bell chime plays on the half-hours of the following hours of the day: Midnight, 4am, 8am, 12pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm (this one is funny, because of the Dog Watches).

Actually, with that little example, you can see the power of the simple Cron command... I can accommodate all the Dog watches very easily, where as some programs you can download don't even do the dog watches.

We completely avoid Applescript because no calculations are required. We only lose out in that we have 8 lines to add to our cron-file. But, I don't think Cron will be mad we added those 8 lines (one for each of the 8 bells specifying exactly when during the day they are to chime).

So, that's a simple and quick way to add Ship's Bells to your computer, if you're in the Nautical mood.

A quick one goes out to Sailorman Jack- Fair Winds, Jack!

Whilst reading my copy of MacFormat magazine earlier, I learnt all about a great anti-virus program for the Mac.

When I bought my first Mac computer (a desktop) over 10 years ago, there was very little chance of a Mac being either hacked into or infected with a virus. Sadly, as the Mac gains popularity, this is no longer the case.

I downloaded and installed this anti-virus program earlier this evening and I highly recommend it. It's now running quietly in the background whilst I work on my MacBook Pro, protecting my computer.

For a link to the developers website where you can download your copy, see the end of this entry.

PC Tools iAntiVirus provides real-time protection and comprehensive system scanning to ensure your Mac remains safe and virus free.

Protection against Mac specific threats

The iAntiVirus database has been designed from the ground up to detect and remove Mac specific threats. This enables a high level of protection whilst keeping memory footprint and resource usage at a minimum. The iAntiVirus database is not cluttered with signatures for Windows specific threats which your Mac is immune against.

Simple to use

iAntiVirus? has been designed with the user in mind. The user interface is purely functional, making it simple to scan for, remove and manage infections.

Some of the features:

A variety of scan options

You may perform a variety of scan types using iAntiVirus, this allows you to strike a balance between the time taken to complete a scan, and its thoroughness.

Real-time protection

OnGuard protects your Mac against infections in real time. Whenever an infection is detected and blocked, an alert is displayed below the system menu bar. OnGuard automatically places detected infections in quarantine, works silently in the background and uses minimal system resources.

Quarantine

iAntiVirus quarantines all detected infections, allowing you to easily view and restore items in the case of a false positive (for example: when scanning with engine heuristics set to high).

Automatic Smart Updates

Frequent updates to detect and guard computers against new threats and viruses as well as provide enhancements to iAntiVirus are automatically installed and downloaded through the Smart Update function. Threat signatures are updated within hours of a high risk malware outbreak to protect you from the latest online threats.

Low resource usage

When in monitoring mode iAntiVirus? has been designed to work silently in the background, threats are blocked and removed without any system impact, while only a small alert window is displayed to advise you that your Mac has been protected against an attack.

To download iAntiVirus follow this link:

I have subscriptions to a few magazines each month, one of them is MacUser, which is my favourite Mac magazine. Today I got my hands on a copy of Mac Format magazine, which I haven't read before.

MacFormat magazine

MacFormat is the UK's biggest selling Mac magazine, full of practical, authoritative and passionate Mac advice.

With reviews of the latest Mac kit plus help and advice on all the Apple programs, and a DVD packed with full programs and the latest demos and updates each month

For more information - follow the link

http://www.macformat.co.uk/

Anyway - I love this magazine! I have devoured a small portion of it and I can happily say it is worth the £5.99 cover price (although more expensive than MacUser!)

I loved the disc that came with the mag and was surprised and pleased to see that is contained 3 full programs and a bunch of royalty free images which I have scoofed for my use. I also installed the SKETCHBOX application - a Sicky Notes type program for the Mac *squee*

SketchBox

SketchBox is a new 'multifunctional yet uncluttered' Sticky Notes Manager for your Mac Desktop.

You can enter text or make drawings and set individual reminders for each sticky to use them as a visual alarm clock.

Arrange all your notes in the thumbnail view, create little storyboards or comics or just store your daily thoughts as searchable text.

Each Sticky consists of three layers: The drawing canvas, a little text editor and an intuitive alarm timer that combines the best of analog and digital clocks. While editing text you can still see your drawing in the semitransparent background and vice-versa.

You can select the active layer by clicking on one of the tabs at the right side of the note. Each Sticky remembers its active layer, so that you can continue where you left after closing the Sticky's window. You can also set a default layer for new Stickies in the preferences.

You can download SketchBox free by following this link to the developers website - I love it! Do get it for your Mac!

Since switching over to Intel processors, the Mac is now capable of running practically any operating system. The simplest option is to use Boot Camp to create a dual-boot system that can run Mac OS X or Windows XP/Vista. A more flexible solution is to run Mac OS X and one or more additional operating systems at the same time. To run another operating system within Mac OS X, you’ll need a special virtualization program like Fusion. Although the program has been available for over a year, the company has recently released a version 2 beta to give you a glimpse of its upcoming features.

Fusion works by creating virtual machines, which trick another operating system into thinking it has access to a Mac’s hardware all to itself. Since most of the time your Mac is idle, waiting for you to do something, a Mac’s processor can spend this idle time running multiple operating systems simultaneously.

Virtual machines let you run multiple operating systems within Mac OS X

When running a virtual machine, you’ll see the other operating system displayed within a Mac OS X window. If you expand this window, this other operating system fills the entire screen, hiding the Mac OS X desktop underneath. If you resize the window, you’ll be able to see your Mac OS X desktop, but at the expense of seeing only a limited portion of the other operating system.

To fix this problem, Fusion supports up to eight displays connected to separate graphics cards. Multiple displays allow you to display the Mac OS X desktop entirely within one monitor and another operating system inside a second monitor. Such an arrangement creates the illusion that each operating system is running independently on separate monitors.

Any operating system that can run on Intel processors can also run on your Mac, including Linux, OpenSolaris, or FreeBSD. Since most people are likely to use Fusion to run Windows, the program supports a variety of Windows versions from Windows 3.1 all the way up to Vista.

Fusion supports all varieties of Windows

To make installing Windows XP or Vista especially easy, the program offers an easy install feature where you can type in your Windows XP/Vista product key at the start of the installation process, and let Fusion install Windows with no further interaction from you. In less than fifteen minutes, you should have a virtual computer ready to run Windows on your Mac.

The Easy Install feature can automatically type in your Windows product key during installation

When running Windows within Fusion, expect a slight performance decrease. Unless you’re running a program that performs heavy data processing, you probably won’t notice this slight speed difference. However, one type of program that may tax the performance of your Mac are high-end video games that display realistic 3-D animation.

Since games are one area where Windows has a huge advantage of the Mac, Fusion gives Mac users a chance to play the latest Windows games. To run these high-end video games, the latest beta now supports DirectX 9.0, which video games use to create their realistic animation.

To further integrate Windows on your Mac, the program offers drag and drop support between Windows and your Mac. Grab a file off your Mac OS X, drag it over your Windows desktop, and drop it to transfer files seamlessly between the two operating systems. As an alternative to dragging and dropping files, you can also store files in a special shared folder that both Mac OS X and Windows can access.

Another feature specifically designed for Windows is called Unity. Normally if you want to run a Windows program, you must first start Windows and then navigate through the Windows Start menu to run the program you want. To eliminate this step, Unity lets you store a Windows program icon directly on the Mac OS X Dock. Clicking this Windows icon immediately launches your chosen Windows program in its own Mac OS X window so you never have to see the Windows desktop or Start menu at all.

This beta adds further integration for Windows programs in printer support. When you print from within a Windows program, Fusion automatically directs the output to your Mac printer without having to fiddle with printer drivers for Windows.

To further integrate your Mac with Windows, Fusion can redirect video input from a Mac’s built-in iSight camera and have it appear within a Windows program. If you have a Bluetooth device, such as a mobile phone, you can transfer data directly to the Mac or Windows through Fusion as well.

Windows can access your Mac’s hardware through Fusion

If you’ve used other virtualization programs, such as Parallels or Virtual PC, you may have virtual machines trapped in these other program file formats. Now you can import and convert your old virtualization machine files to run on Fusion. If you’ve already stored Windows XP/Vista on your Mac through Boot Camp, Fusion can run your copy of Windows within Mac OS X without having to reinstall Windows.

Taking the time to install an operating system isn’t difficult, but it’s probably not something you’ll want to do more than once. To protect your virtual machine, the program can take a snapshot of an operating system’s current configuration. Now if Windows crashes or gets infected by spyware, just return your virtual machine to a previous snapshot when everything was working. This snapshot feature gives you the freedom to experiment with another operating system without worrying about losing any data.

Fusion essentially gives your Mac multiple personalities. If you absolutely need to run a Windows program, or another operating system like Linux, just pack your Mac with enough memory (at least 1Gb or more) and you’ll have access to both your Mac programs and any programs on your other operating systems.

Whether you need to run an occasional Windows program or need to make sure that a web page appears correctly in different browsers and operating systems, you’ll find Fusion an important accessory for your Mac. As a beta, the program exhibited near perfect performance. Buy the current $79.99 version 1.1.2 today and VMWare will let you upgrade to version 2.0 for free when it becomes available later this year. By combining Fusion with a Mac, you’ll have the most versatile computer in the world.

PopChar has been around for over 20 years and is a favorite of editors and designers. To type a special character, you click on a P in the menu bar and a list of characters appears. Selecting the character you want drops it into your current document. Sure, you could always use Apple's Character Palette tool, but it's slow, and difficult to search for a special character in a particular font.

PopChar X 4.0 adds a new feature for searching Unicode characters by name across font boundaries. Ergonis, developer of PopChar, provides an example of searching for a "cubic meters" symbol in Helvetica. Typing in "cub" produces no results, but you can click a new "All" button to search across all Unicode fonts.

You can download a trial version of PopChar X 4.0, or purchase it online from Ergonis for €29.99. Multiple license packs are available at a discount.

The Firefox team would like to invite the world to join in their quest to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours. How do they planning to do this? They want as many people as possible to pledge to download Firefox 3 within 24 hours of its release as part of Download Day 2008.

While the release day is still unknown -- sometime in June is as much of a hint as we're getting -- pledging signs you up for updates about the imminent release of Firefox 3. You can also use your favorite social networking group (Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Twitter) to follow the journey of Firefox to a world record.

When I wrote this post, 356,554 people had pledged to grab Firefox 3 on Download Day 2008. The US is leading with 58,862 pledges, with Brazil in second place with 23,030. Wherever you reside, be sure to participate in this fun event!
