Organized requer Mac OS X 10.5 e é completamente gratuito.

Firefox 3 has been released to the world and with a Guinness Record to be the icing on the cake!!! This is late news but I was happy about Firefox for one particular reason; the support for my native language on Mac OS X. Uptil now I was forced to use Safari for viewing webpages written in Kannada because Fx 2+ could not render Kannada fonts properly. My efforts to tweak my computer to display Kannada fonts were unsucessful. My default browser is set to Firefox so whenever I clicked on a link, particuarly that of webpages in Kannada, I was transported to ugly looking pages. Copying the link to Safari was anything but pleasing. So, there I was thinking that Mozilla would fix the problem and surprise of surprise when I saw that my one the Kannada blogs that I visit sometimes was displyed perfectly. This particular website is written almost entirely in Kannada which made the experience all the more fantastic. I knew about the improvements over version 2, but this was new to me. Thanks Mozilla!!!

One more reason to use Firefox.

In Windows Weekly 66, Paul Thurrott turns into a whiny 13-year-old. Thurrott feels that he is the one to defend Microsoft against some mainstream journalists. The argument is valid, but essentially Thurrott debunked himself for not being a Microsoft (original) Defender (not to be confused with Microsoft Windows Defender, the anti-spyware software. Thanks clintthewookie for the corrections.).

Close to the 18 minute mark of the podcast (note to Leo Laporte: "netcast" term is lame), Thurrott mentions that with 1 terabyte hard drive and 4GB RAM, it is essentially OK to have "bloated software" just because the resources is there. Gee, that sounds like Thurrott echoing Bill Gates.

A little bit after, Thurrott was saying: "The version of Mac OS X that was available when Windows 95 shipped....."

Leo Laporte did not even catch it waht ever the reason was.

The truth is that either using a Mac or PC, not all the contents of the application is wiped off your hard drive. Some still hiding scared and alone in your computer.

AppDelete is a great application for Mac OS X that wipes out most/all of the contents of an application. Simply take the icon of the application you want to uninstall and drag it right on the AppDelete icon and confirm you want to uninstall it.

It's true, Macs do crash, but rarely. When your Mac does crash, you get a pretty little message that says you have to restart your computer (Kernel Panic). I guess you can say it's equivalent to Windows' Blue Screen of Death. A simple app called iPanic lets you simulate this Kernel Panic, only you don't have to reboot. Great for tricking your Mac friends into thinking there's really something wrong with their computer!

The title to this post has nothing to do with anything other than iPhone 3G will be released in seven days. "Seven Impossible Days" is a song recorded by Mr. Big.

It is the Fourth of July celebration for people in The United States, and Friday for the rest of the world.

In the meantime, MacNN reports that iPhone 3G starts forming at Apple Store Fifth Ave. in New York. I gotta say that these people are crazy. That's "Seven Impossible Days" for me to wait in line for the iPhone 3G.

OK, at least I tried making sense of the title to this post to the content, even though no one might get it.

For all of our Canadian friends, unfortunately you're no longer at the top of "Oh noes, our wireless data plans are ripping us off" list. Our Norwegian friends seems to be getting a more expensive plan.

what else?

OK, so I'm an idiot.

Either that or I always look for the complicated way to solve things. All I wanted to do was to organize my spaces so that the opened web-based programs were in space 1 and the open scientific programs were in space 2.

In Linux I know how to do this (Gnome-based answer), just right click the window title in the bottom bar and send it to a new desktop area. In OS X I just could not figure it out. Obviously there's no bottom bar, so no right clickability (not a bad thing really), so what can I do? You can't drag them to a new space, and you can't minimize windows and then maximize them in a new space (That's a feature!).

Of course, if I had read the propaganda I could have figured this out in 5 seconds. Just hit the hot key to open all spaces (F8 for me) and then drag the window you want into the space you want. Of course the window you want to drag needs to be in focus but it's pretty easy.

Doh.

The original iPhone brought an interesting and effective concept to the mobile phone industry. The iPhone activation process was regarded as on of the greatest things that Apple brought to the mobile industry. Customer can buy the iPhone and activate it at their own time through iTunes. No more wasting the precious time at the store waiting for the phone activations. There were some problems with the activation process for the first few days as record numbers of people trying to do the same thing at the same time. After all the hickups the iPhone set a new standard for the mobile phone industry, the activation process in particular.

Since its introductions in January 2007, the iPhone was criticized by the so-called-tech-journalists who didn't even have access to the phone. They screamed and yelled about the lack of 3G network support and the pricing of the iPhone. Let's take a look at the two factors.

3G Network Support.
Having a faster wireless network on the iPhone is a definite advantage. Some said that the 3G network support requires more power consumptions thus shortening the battery life. The so-called-tech-journalists declared that the iPhone is severely behind the times for not having 3G network support. The irony of this argument is that the same "tech journalists" were saying that the 3G support in the iPhone is pretty much useless because of AT&T's lack of 3G network in the United States. Honestly, why would these so-called-tech-journalists criticize the original iPhone for not having 3G network support? That's a rhetorical question.

iPhone Pricing.
In the United States, the iPhone was originally priced at $499 and $599 for the 4GB and 8GB iPhone respectively. The so-called-tech-journalists screamed and yelled for the lack of subsidy on the iPhone. Fast forward a year later, AT&T is now subsidizing the iPhone 3G with a few caveats. Based on the available informations, iPhone 3G requires in-store-activations and a two-year-agreement. Whatever happened to the easy-to-do activation process through iTunes? It's now gone because of the subsidy. The pay-as-you-go plan is currently not available for the iPhone 3G. AT&T wants to deter all the unlocking by forcing the in-store-activation. For sure they are losing money for subsidizing phones that are not bound to their service contracts.

What have we learned here? We can't have the cake and eat it too.

Eight more days to go, and we'll see if how Apple would handle the iPhone 3G sales in their own retail stores. Until then, we could only speculate.

I recently tried to install an Open Source vector graphics editor called Inkscape. It wasn't as easy, as I thought: the App doesn't start... First start dialog appears, after clicking "OK" Inkscape quits.

After I made a lot of researches I've found how to make it work.

So here's solution:

0. I assume you have already downloaded and installed Inkscape on your mac
1. go to XQuartz web site
2. download and install the the latest X11.pkg version
3. right click Inkscape.app and choose "Show Package Contents"
4. go to Contents/Resources.
5. double click on "opendoc". A script should run and UI should appear showing a blank document.

After that, the whole thing is fixed. You no longer have to launch X11 or anything. Just click on the Inkscape icon as you'd expect.

As I alluded to in a previous post, the main reason for getting WinBUGS to run on the Mac was to be able to run WinBUGS through R using the R2WinBUGS R package.

Once I got DarWine up and running it was really only a matter of fixing some variables in the R2WinBUGS call of my model.

While written in Japanese, this guide had enough information to get me started down the path (no pun intended).

One of the main things that you have to do is to define WINEPATH and WINE in the call, which are of course buried a bit in OS X

bug.out <- bugs(...,
useWINE=TRUE,

WINEPATH = "/Applications/Darwine/Wine.bundle/Contents/bin/winepath",

WINE = "/Applications/Darwine/Wine.bundle/Contents/bin/wine"...)

It works, but as of now it ain't pretty. I also am not seeing faster model runs than when I use a virtual machine in Parallels, so I may need to test this further.

Ricordate: Internet ≠ Internet Explorer. Ok? :)

Per cosa state leggendo allora?

All visual code design using easy block and spaghetti lines to join the blocks. Easy and simple and you can make some pretty interesting things. The only drawback I found was that I needed a lot a clicking to get things done. Perhaps learning some keyboard shorcuts of by heart will do good :-). Anyway you can see a screenshot of a screensaver using the iSight camera below. (Try it on your own PC using this download)

Note: These are Screensavers (Mac OS X - Tiger only)
