Even better though is having the time to enjoy all the good stuff before you box it up, which means taking it out and using it, often on occasions when a more prosaic item would usually suffice.

I have been doing just that these past few months, in preparation to store my life away and leave it all behind. For I am soon to be confined indefinitely to the suitcase of articles I choose to take with me, augmented (of course) by whatever I may acquire along the way. A style experiment of a different kind, you might say.

And it is a fabulous way to live: breakfasting on your best china and drinking wine of an evening from glasses you usually take out when guests are coming around for dinner. Satisfying and indulgent in a perfectly guilt-free way.

And why not. What are we waiting for? A special occasion? Don't wait - just create one! It shouldn't take the prospect of not having access to them to remind us that we have lovely things in order to enjoy them, whether that be for their beauty or the memories they hold. So why should that be only once in a while or, more often, not at all?

It is, of course, the same with clothes. And perhaps more so, in these casual times, where people no longer dress up to leave the house let alone for dinner.

With the financial crisis exploding all around us, now is the perfect time to draw on the special garments we already own for comfort - no need to buy more, let's bring out those party dresses languishing in the back of the cupboard!

Don't wait until the next wedding invitation to get out your gorgeous jewellery: wear it during the day. Next time you go out coffee or brunch take your most stylish clutch out of its cloth bag and take it with you. Or team your most expensive pair of shoes with jeans to go to the shops to buy the paper and a bunch of flowers. Think of an excuse to leave the house just to do it. I kid you not, you will feel more special as you stroll down the street. Why should only the filthy rich get to use their best things every day just because it's all they have?

Better yet, throw a dinner party and tell everyone that jeans and tee shirts are banned, including for the chef! That's what that apron you never use is for: keeping your good clothes away from stray ingredients...

It is in this spirit of making the most of the present that I am approaching travelling north for a friend's wedding next week. My theme for the trip is going to be Jet Set Glamour, taking inspiration from Michael Kors and his particular brand of same: think glossy shots of women on airport tarmacs, all dark sunglasses, sleek hair and trenches thrown over their shoulders with pencil skirts; or posing on the stairs of yachts, wearing jewellery and high heels with their swimsuits and bronzed legs.

Since we shall be spending our time celebrating in similarly civilised surrounds, with pools and riverside restaurants rather than tents and sandy beaches, it is the perfect opportunity to pack the best of everything. And why not be a little outrageous? I am planning cocktails and brunches, so will be ditching the thongs, sarong and baseball cap for a strapless maxi, wedges and a big floppy hat. Ready for that first cocktail of the afternoon? Why darling, am I ever!

Founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès as a saddlery company, the business has remained mostly in the control of the Hermès family for almost two hundred years. Today, the house of Hermès produces ready-to-wear fashion, home decor, jewelery, luggage, and fragrances as well as saddles.

One of Hermès' most recognized products is the silk scarf. The first silk scarf square in the Hermès collection was produced in 1928. The modern Hermès scarf measures 90cm square, weighs 65 grams and is woven from the silk of 250 mulberry moth cocoons. The per-pound cost of a scarf today is approximately $1,965.00 (compared to a pound of steel at $0.19).
