I am a 22 year old free spirited, compassionate, worldly student of yoga and meditation, yet I am also college student at a small, secluded, wasp-ish institution, suffocated by the bubble it sometimes inflicts. After taking some time off from school to tend to my health I had the opportunity to travel and volunteer in other parts of the world, opening my experience and knowledge of what suffering is and how I will be connected to it. I grew up traveling (my mother is a travel agent), however it wasn't until I was older that I began incorporating volunteer work, cultural immersion, personal connection and adventure in those travels.

After falling in love with the practice of yoga and studying Buddhism extensively, both at school and in India, I have attempted to approach my travels and hearing other stories as valuable lessons on humanity, beauty along wiht physical, mental and spiritual "awakeness" and "mindfulness" (sati).

I am calling this blog Earthly Lotus for a myriad of reasons, but I will highlight one for now. The Lotus flower continues to serve as a guide for living one's life with self-acceptance, hope and beauty. You may have noticed the presence of the Lotus motif in a yoga studio or two, but the spiritual connection and contemplation of this flower is much deeper. As Buddhism is a way of living (not necessarily a religion unless you are studying Pureland Buddhism), the Lotus is an embodiment of that way of life. The Lotus can grow out of the dirtiest, muddiest, more cluttered of muddy soils. The Lotus does not pretend to grow out of perfect soil; it accepts the flaws of its origins and characteristics and opens itself up to becoming spotless and beautiful, silently sitting among the mud, embracing the sun, water, clouds....whatever comes.

Although I do enjoy many a superficial and material pleasure, I am not about to renounce those in this blog. I want to appreciate all forms of beauty in this blog, so I hope you enjoy my approach to travel and worldly beauty in this blog!

There's lots of talk regarding these creepy creatures, but the one I'd like to address comes from Samuel, who is skeptical that this type of marketing works, claiming it's doubtful that he'll be purchasing one of these automobiles.

It's dangerous and inaccurate to measure success of a viral campaign in terms of sales. Granted, all marketing must ultimately lead to sales, but not all marketing tactics have to lead to sales directly. Viral marketing must be measured in publicity, buzz and exposure. This exposure, in turn, should then lead to interest, which should then funnel down into sales. It's not an all or nothing proposition; it's a step-by-step process in which viral marketing is simply a piece of the puzzle.

Based on publicity, I'd have to say the faceless people campaign is working brilliantly. Just take a look at some of the talk that's going around, that a simple newspaper ad or TV commercial could have never generated. In the past week, there have been more than 1,600 blog posts on the topic alone. Plus, I have to think this has been a much more economical tactic. It's genius in how it presents something it knows will be talked about, blogged about, YouTubed and Googled about, leading to this ominous website, awaiting whatever it is they are about to launch.

Will it lead to sales? I can't say. My main concern is with gaining mass appeal for something with such a high price tag could be a bit wasteful. But it is a successful viral marketing campaign, simply because it got us, the consumer, to talk about them, the advertiser. And today, we are as equipped, or more equipped, to spread the word than the media.

Current.com features the story as it's number one news item on the news pages and comments far and wide are speculating about exactly what their motives are.

Here at the Engine House we can see through the speculation and reveal with the minutest amount of digging that the 'Faceless People' are a cleverly devised marketing ploy from the car makers - Lotus.

How do we know this? Well take a look at the images below...

The first image shows within the code of the website www.facelesspeople.com, a dramatic site counting down till 'True Character Emerges', a line of code stating 'http://www.grouplotus.com/cars/home.html' a clear sign that they are the creators.

The second image shows that the original website title tag was 'True Character - Lotus' - obviously the campaign has worked better than expected and the mystery is worth capitalizing on!

Further evidence for Lotus involvement comes from the use of the term 'Project Eagle' within the code - a Lotus project that will see a 'higher specification addition to the Lotus product range entering the market above the Elise' and the Faceless people counter timing down to an event which strangely coincides with the opening of the London Motor Show.

So the mystery is over. However, we have to say we take are hats off to the creators of this campaign. Intensive online attention, speculation and widescale press and media attention makes this a truly brilliant piece of buzz marketing.

Organizations are working mightily to figure out how to leverage social networking (blogs, wikis, presence awareness, messaging, expert directories, communities of practice) in all forms of corporate training, customer education and support, and talent management.  For example, 77% of all L&D organizations believe that younger workers (under 25) have significantly different learning styles than older workers, yet only 16% feel they have developed some level of expertise in the implementation of collaborative learning.  In our most recent Learning On-Demand research, even the most advanced companies tell us that only 14% of companies are using blogs or wikis, and fewer than 4% feel highly successful with these solutions yet.  One big surprise:  28% of our research respondents are not even using Instant Messaging yet, illustrating how long it takes for collaborative solutions to reach broad adoption (and support from IT).
2. Learning platforms are being "re-examined."  Most of the companies we talk with are significantly rethinking their entire learning platform strategy (LMS) to understand how to evolve or add new systems which support collaboration.  And today's LMS is not as successful as one would believe:  across all the organizations we studied (approximately 900 different organizations), on average only 51% of employees use the learning platform at all.
3. Sophistocated, large, global companies are moving fast.  Almost 1/4 (24%) of organizations now have some concept or strategy for "learning on-demand" (the term we have coined to describe the next era of corporate e-learning), and larger organizations (those with more than 10,000 employees) are twice as far along as small to mid-sized organizations.  The reason, of course, is that large organizations have no choice - without collaborative solutions they can no longer scale their L&D programs.
4. Social networking software companies are sprouting up like weeds.  We identified 90 such companies in our research, and more than 35 of them are somewhat focused on the corporate internal employee market.  Our initial research clearly shows that these companies fall into four categories:  (A) software providers focused on corporate learning, HR, and collaboration systems and solutions (e.g. IBM, Microsoft-Sharepoint, Jive, Mzinga, Awareness, Q2 Learning, and others), (B) providers focused on external customer and public-facing collaborative networks like a company external blog (e.g. Lithium, Ning, Communispace, Telligent) (C) providers focused on content management systems, who have added on systems for collaboration (EMC, OpenText,  Ektron, Alfresco) and (D) true application software companies who are adding collaboration and social networking to their systems (SuccessFactors, Saba, CornerstoneOndemand).
5. I firmly believe that this new form of software-enabled collaboration is a revolution, not an evolution.  Like many of the software innovations that I have personally witnessed over my career (e.g. the first color graphics PC, the CD-ROM, the web-browser, Flash, SaaS architectures, and others), social networking is really going to shake things up.  The reason is that these systems are both complex, data-rich, and require a new type of software architecture.  A system which supports 200,000 employees and customers with in-depth employee and customer profiles, active communication and blogging, tagging, content management, custom branding, and tracking each and every communication is quite a complex software solution.  As we examine these vendors we are finding some very significant new areas of functionality which are going to change and upset the traditional HR software companies.
6. The jury is out on what our ultimate HR software architectures will look like.  Small and mid-sized companies will likely adopt social networking through their SaaS application solutions.  Enterprises are more likely to develop IT standards eventually.  And many companies will implement departmental, divisional, and application-led solutions while the market evolves.  While most enterprises would like to have a corporate "architecture" in this area, it will take time for this to occur and it often takes a few years for the "safe, corporate-approved" solutions to emerge.  (None are there yet.)
