ABC Adds Two Hours to Lost

The final two seasons of Lost will be two episodes longer. The 2009 and 2010 seasons of the series

The final two seasons of Lost will be two episodes longer. The 2009 and 2010 seasons of the series will be 17 hours each, not 16 as was originally planned. When the network picked the show up for three more seasons, it was for 48 hours (16-16-16), but because the writer's strike knocked out three hours out of the current season, the network is compensating for that loss. ABC recently added an additional hour to Part 2 of the season finale that airs on May 29th.

With the changes, the show will wrap with the same number of episodes that producers and ABC negotiated last year.

"We were supposed to do 16-16-16," "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof said. "But we ended up doing 14 this season, so we owe two."

Those hoping for additional episodes will be disappointed though, as producer Damon Lindelof made it clear the show will not be extended beyond the remaining 34-episode order.

"(Executive producer) Carlton Cuse and I worked so hard to get the show to end that I think to suddenly say, 'Oh, I think we got another season in us' would be a betrayal to everybody involved in the show -- but most of all the audience," he said. "It's better to retire your number at the top of your game."

Lindelof also discussed the season finale, and a little of what to expect for next season. Here are the highlights:

"The finale this year will not be as tricky as last year," he said. "Hopefully, this year it's a little bit more of a straightforward action-adventure narrative. But the ending of the episode will hopefully engage and intrigue people looking forward to the next season of the show."

About those flash forwards:

"It's very exciting that the audience is going to be wondering when is the present going to be (next season)," he said. "We've moved backward in time, now we've moved forward in time. The present of the show has always been on the island -- that may not necessarily be the case in the future."

And what do the producers have planned when the time comes to air the series finale in 2010? Well, Lindelof said he and Cuse plan to "go into hiding for many, many months" at an "undisclosed location.":

"David Chase set a great example when he went off to Paris after 'The Sopranos' ending, which is great because all these people are going to be asking, 'What does it mean? What is it?' " he said. "The fact that there's no one really around to answer that question, it forces people to come up with what they think it means. We can guarantee our show will not end with a cut to black, it will be more clear than that. But whenever anything you love ends ... there's a certain disappointment."

This is a spoiler alert and it's the only one I'll ever write. Below I'm going to talk about last night's episode of Lost, if you haven't seen it and plan to then don't read this. The same goes for any other post about Lost or various television shows and movies.

I've always liked John Locke.

He is me to some extent and last night proved that more than anything. Locke has always liked to think of himself as a "mountain man" or a lone-wolf. His actions have been fitting but I've at least always thought that it was a bit of a put-on.

He's always been a little too determined, when he does some brave act like trying to go on a walkabout even though he's in a wheelchair it tends to reek of him trying to prove something to himself.

That became apparent last night in his flashbacks. Locke's always been a nerd who was trying to be a jock. And last night, being the jock hurt Locke. When he picked up the knife, he lost his place on the island. When he chose not to go to scientist camp, he lost his place on the island.

Of course Locke made it to the island anyway but it took a plane crash instead of a boat trip.

And now he has to save the island. How? By moving it. Sounds far fetched yet I have no doubt that the island will be moved and I will enjoy the process. I would also like to add that I don't exactly trust Christian (Jack's dad) and Claire. Claire is obviously different than the sweet old Claire so something's up. Maybe it's all a big trick. Maybe not, you just never know.

It just seems that everybody is trusting everybody and that should never be the case on this island. Too much stuff has been done to too many people.

It was nice to finally learn what happened to Desmond and crew on the freighter. Which brings me to the most exciting part of the episode: the preview of next week.

Is it finally going to happen. I mean, I know about the Oceanic 6 and all but I never thought it would happen this soon.

I do have one small problem, that I'm sure will be explained sooner or later. When the doctor from the freighter showed up on the beach with his throat sliced a few episodes ago it hadn't happened yet on the boat. So last night when the copter flew over and threw a bag out was that in the past? If so does that mean that Jack and crew will be waiting on the copter when it actually arrives? Time traveling is maddening?

Overall, a great episode.

Cabin Fever

There’s an organization I’ve dealt with on several occasions in North Carol

Cabin Fever

There's an organization I've dealt with on several occasions in North Carolina called the John Locke Foundation. My dealing with the foundation — named after the 17th Century English philosopher who maintained the people were born without inane ideas (in other words, we all come into this world with a blank slate) — usually deal with tax issues, locally. In the most recent vote for the .25-cent sales tax in Lee County (which failed), the John Locke Foundation joined Americans For Prosperity to fight it.
Their tactics are brash, but effective. In all honesty, they can be a pain in the ass ... especially if you disagree with them (which I do, on occasion).
I'd never heard of the foundation until I moved to North Carolina last year, but the name always stuck out to me, not because of my familiarity with the philosopher, but because it's also the namesake to one of Lost's main characters — John Locke. Last night's episode, "Cabin Fever," showed us more about the life of my favorite show's most beloved (and hated) character and led us to believe that John was always meant to be on the island. From his childhood encounters with the ageless Richard Alpert to his hospital encounter with Matthew Abbaddon — we understand that the universe knew Locke was meant for the island long before Locke knew himself.
Like the foundation that bears his name, Locke is stubborn. He's bull-headed and he gets what he wants, even if he has to offend a few people along the way. At least "Island Locke" is this way ... mainland Locke was always been indecisive (he failed the test at Age 5 ... he's had woman issues ... he couldn't help but latch on to daddy). I'm sure like the foundation, he's opposed to taxes too. Keep that in mind if he's ever president of the island.
We learn in "Cabin Fever" that Ben Linus is ready to hand the "chosen one" label over to Locke, or at least he's pretending to. Possibly, he's passing the "hot potato" to Locke so he won't be the hunted one anymore. I'm never one for great insight into these episodes, but "Doc" Jensen at Entertainment Weekly is ... and he offers this great breakdown:

Locke is born early. At age 5, he takes a test that most likely would have taken him to the Island if he had passed. He didn't. That same year, Benjamin Linus is born. At age 16, Locke is invited to go to a science camp that again would have taken him to the Island. He refused. About that same time, Benjamin Linus and his father joined the Dharma Initiative. The implication, it seems, is that Ben has been walking the path that was originally meant for Locke. Ben was the contingency plan — the course correction — for Locke's altered destiny. But Ben is his own person, of course, and he has done things differently from what Locke would have done, and this, in turn, has created further changes in the original order of things — changes that I think a certain ticked-off, Island-deprived billionaire named Charles Widmore is trying to reverse. The scene at the rehab center between paralyzed adult Locke and his wheelchair pusher, the creepy Matthew Abbaddon — who accepted the description of ''orderly'' with knowing irony — was meant to suggest one way Widmore is scheming to restore the original order: by getting Locke on that Island and taking back the birthright that was supposed to be his.

And this:
Struck down by...well, we never saw who was behind the wheel, did we? Maybe that's important, maybe not, or maybe not yet, but anyway, Emily was rushed to the hospital, and with that, John Locke entered the world three months ahead of time. ''He's okay,'' said the nurse. ''He's just a little early.'' As Preemie John was wheeled away in a toasty incubator that looked like a microwave oven (talk about cabin fever!), Emily cried out her wish that the boy be named John. Now, all of that should have sounded familiar to you. Flashback one year ago this week, in which Lost gave us another cheery Mother's Day edition, ''The Man Behind the Curtain.'' That episode told the origin story of Benjamin Linus, who, if you recall, was also born prematurely, and also born to a woman named Emily who cried out his name, although she did so as she died. Some points of difference: Ben was raised by his biological father (oops), while Locke was given up for adoption and raised in foster care. Also, Ben was born about five years after Locke; call it 1963. But as it so happens, Locke's fifth year was a key marker in his fate-whipped trajectory, for it brought Richard Alpert into his life.
READ THE COMPLETE ARTICLE HERE.

The writers of this show are brilliant, of course, and I'm ready to start trashing my childhood memories to make room for my mind being blown over the next two weeks (three hours of season finale greatness).
This week's episode ended with Locke, Ben and Hurley finally finding the cabin, and once Locke was inside, he didn't find Jacob. He found Jack's father, Dr. Christian Shephard, and Jack's half-sister, Claire (who I say died in the previous episode). Claire offered sly "I know what this is all about" smiles while Christian informed Locke that his job was to "move the island."
Now, we have no idea what the means, whether he meant move the locale or move the time, but it offers something nice to speculate about.
Elsewhere in this episode, we see the freighter crew return with one dead, thanks to a mauling from smokey. The creepy gunman Keamy is upset and takes it out on the boat's captain (shot through the heart), Michael (beaten to a pulp) and the ships doctor (throat slit, dumped in the ocean ... he'll arrive on the island yesterday). Yes, that wasn't a mis-type. Yesterday.
We see Sayid escape the boat (Desmond stays behind) to warn the island folk, and we see the gunmen head back to the island to start the killing. Lupidus drops a warning down to Jack and the islanders as they fly by, only Jack thinks it could possibly mean "that's where they want us to be." I think Sayid's purpose is to change his mind on that.

That's all I got for this week. Great episode .. though I do have yet another CHARTER CABLE gripe. Four times in this episode, they broke into a "tornado watch" alert that blackens the screen, tells you to turn to Channel 10 (which has nothing about a warning) and then reverts back to UNC-TV for a few seconds before bringing you back to the show. This whole shpeel lasts 15 seconds, and it occured during a few big scenes — Locke talking to Horace the ghost and Locke, Ben and Hurley outside of the cabin. Grrr.

From Lostpedia:
• The second protocol Keamy grabs from the safe has the same Dharma symbol that Ben's parka had in "The Shape of Things to Come".
• The test given to young Locke by Richard Alpert strongly resembles the Tibetan Buddhist ritual used to confirm a reincarnated tulku (the Dalai Lama being the most widely known).
• Young Locke is playing backgammon, the game he attempts to teach Walt in Season 1.
• Back in Season 1, when Locke meets his real mother for the first time, he is hit by a car when he sees her. His mother was was hit by a car in this episode, resulting in Locke's early birth.

I'm not going to say I understand Lost, because I'm not sure if I do. I have also learned that everytime I think I know what is going on, I realize I don't.

If you haven't seen this week's episode, don't bother to continue reading.

Last night, we find out John has to move the island. But we don't find out how. I think he's not going to move the island physically, but is going to move it in time.

If you watch the show, you know time travel exists here. It explains how some people move back and forth. And we know people can't find the island in the future. Maybe it's because the island doesn't exist in the future. It's either in the past, or in the far future.

Does it make sense? No. But a lot of things on Lost doesn't make sense. I still don't understand the smoke monster, or why Claire is so happy to not be with her baby. Or the point of the people in the tail end of the plane because they're all dead now but one person. Or what happened to the rest of the others. Or what the disease is that was prominent in the first season but hasn't been mentioned since (remember it was the reason Danielle killed her shipmates).

But I'm sure it will all be explained slowly. Very slowly.

Whoa, with so many hints and Easter Eggs in one episode, this show seems to get more complex by the minute. Learning that both the Island’s people and Widmore’s people have had an interest in Locke since a very early age just confirms what I’ve been saying all along: Locke is easily the coolest and most interesting character in this show. Moving along in random order, the ending scene seems to quell the rumor that Christian Shepherd is Jacob, but he apparently has very close ties. Likewise, Claire’s prescence in the cabin took me aback. I realize that she was last scene being lead away by Christian, and I’ve always liked her character, but I never thought that she was part of the “grand scheme of things” on the Island. I’m beginning to wonder if every survivor of 815, including the minor ones that are only in the background, is there for a very specific purpose, or was in some way or other “chosen.”

Back on the freighter, things take a turn for the scary as Keemi stages a mutiny and plans to “torch” the Island. We also learn that the freighter people received news of the doctor’s death from the Island before it happened, confirming again that the Island is definitely surrounded by some sort of temporal distortion. Whether this is more proof of my Temporal Nexus Theory or not remains to be seen.

Finally, we have the closing line of “we need to move the Island.” What sort of movement does this suggest? The first answer would probably be a physical displacement, implying the Island can somehow move, and with all the other crazy things in the show, it is certainly possible. However, I’m wondering if the movement will be temporal, perhaps the Island is some sort of giant time machine which can move itself back and forth through time? (It would certainly explain why Richard Alpert has appeared at several points in time never looking any older.) Anyway, I’m certainly looking forward to the season finale, as next week begins the first part, and I’m sure the ending will be even bigger than last year.

Davi Cruz - Nota 7,0

Diane,
I write this from Jacksonville, FL. Today is the last day of a four-day training exercise.

Diane,

I write this from Jacksonville, FL. Today is the last day of a four-day training exercise. Tonight, I will take two planes from Jacksonville to Detroit to Indianapolis. Final touch-down: 10:30 pm. Feel free to meet me at the airport, Diane - I'll be the guy with the hollow thousand-yard stare, burying his face in a Cinnabon as big as a guinea pig.

Jacksonville has had its ups and downs. What follows is an itemized list of both.

Ups:

~ Got to see a baseball game on a warm but not too humid evening, surrounded by soused locals and swooping seagulls. It was a hell of a thing. Incidentally, if you're going to see a ballgame and you don't care much for baseball, make it minor league. There's a lot more scoring and a lot less working of the pitch count.

~ Ate own weight at a great barbecue joint, and simultaneously learned that Southerners ordering BBQ pork will sometimes specify what cut they want. "Outside cut" for instance means mostly the "bark" on the outside of the pig, and it is chopped rather than sliced. Not only do they ask for this, Diane, but the waitresses are very accomodating of it.

~ Uhhhh.

Yes, that's it: four days, and I truly enjoyed myself for about four non-consecutive hours.

--

Downs:

~ Ate own weight in almost everything imaginable. Own weight in fast food fajitas at the Indy airport (grade: B-). Own weight in sandwiches and fries, twice. Own weight in pizza for lunch one day. Own weight in candy and Coke to keep my eyes open during all-day training sessions. Own weight in (allegedly) Cajun, (allegedly) spicy snack mix. Did NOT eat own weight in fruits, vegetables, or any other remotely healthy thing, however. Current physical status: sludgy, pudgy, fucked up, pork barrel. I will need to be rolled on to the plane this afternoon.

~ This training that I have already mentioned a couple times? Diane, that shit was BORING. Boooorrrrr-ing. So very dull and purposeless. Each day we started early and ended late; and one day we brought lunch in and trained through lunch. Bosses who do this sort of thing should be locked in the training room at the end of the day with venomous snakes and enraged wolverines. And a big, open bag of poop.

~ Drove by a restaurant called this: Ying's Chinee Takee Outee. No further comment.

~ For a brief period of time at the ballgame, sat in front of drunken, constantly-shouting Boomhauer. This was surreal. I wasn't even sure if he was rooting for the guy at bat to succeed or fail; all I know is, he felt very strongly about it.

~ Missed "Lost" on account of planned bonding activities. I know Gordon and Albert aren't big fans of the show, Diane, but they need to respect my personal entertainment choices outside of company time. Now it'll be at least another day before I know if Jacob is actually Jack's dad, if Michael or Ben ends up in the coffin, or if a Kate/Claire/Juliet/Sun lesbi-throwdown is as hot as I think it would be. (Diane, when I get back to the home office, remind me to e-mail Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse with my list of suggestions for improving the show.)

~ Missed my woman. (Awwwwww!)

So that's it, Diane. Should I ever set foot in this mediocre city again, I resolve to eat more salads and less french fries, and fake an illness on days 2-4 that allows me to spend a lot of time in a zen state watching TV in the hotel room. I only got to see the first half of "My Super Ex-Girlfriend," for Christ's sake - how will I ever find out how damn stupid that movie was going to turn out to be?

On second thought, maybe it's good that other people occasionally run my life.

Lost Update Season IV 05/08/2008

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

I usually only post a verse or two of the song lyric but tonight, Neil Young's Old Man needs the entire treatment. It speaks volumes about the mysterious old man Jacob and how the island replenishes itself. Read the lyrics slowly and you will begin to understand what course Lost is heading on. And it touches on my Lost theory as well which is a nice touch.

Just what is my theory….. I’ll tell you in a Lost island minute.
Although it appears the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 are on a tropical island, they are being deceived. There is no island. The survivors are in a virtual reality laboratory. All the castaways are interconnected to one another sharing each others thoughts, memories, and feelings. While in this virtual reality laboratory, a battery of physical and mental experiments are performed on them. And who is behind all this other than the mysterious government men? Aliens of course.

Destiny is a fickle bitch!

Richard is on the mainland when John Locke was born. Lets say John is 40 years old. That's a conservative guess. Richard looks exactly the same forty years ago as he does today. Either time travel, virtual reality, or a race of people that do not age is in effect here. I'm opting for the second one. In a nutshell, Richard doesn't age.

We have to ask the question why he doesn't? My answer is virtual reality of course. In VR controlled by someone else, the parameters of the concept of time are can be changed. You may think that 100 days or 100 years have passed but in reality, only a few moments have ticked away.

The doctor was dead on the island, washed ashore, but on the freighter, he is still quite alive. Only later when Kheeme kills him and tosses him overboard does it make sense. Remember, time is different on the island and the freighter. In VR, time has no real value. The doctor is alive in one time sequence, and already dead in another.

Tonight we were introduced to Horace, a character that has been dead for 12 years. John sees him chopping a tree down in preparation for making a cabin. It's actually a dream John is having. Horace continues to cut the same tree down time after time as he speaks to John. He tells John that he has to find him, and afterward, then he will be able to find Jacob. (In the mass grave pit on the island where Ben shot John, lies Horace's remains) In the pocket is a map to the cabin.

John Locke needs his ego stroked. We learned this from his flash back as a child. Abandoned by his mother at birth, bullied in high school as a geek, or nerd, and of course pushed out a window by his father after his kidney was taken. In steps Horace. He tells John that they have been waiting for him for a very long time.

John now has a strong connection to the island. It needs him. Unlike back on the mainland. John is being manipulated without his knowing. Just like he did to Hurley when he told him he could leave and Hurley chose to stay. Ben even tells John that he manipulated Hurley into thinking it was Hurley's own decision. Exactly what the VR lab is doing to John.

Locke finds the cabin, goes inside alone, but instead of finding Jacob inside, he spies Christian, Jack and Claire's father. And hey, Claire is there as well. She looks different, a little demonic, devious, not herself. Christian tells Locke the copter is coming and will kill them all. He tells John to ask the question. John asks how to save the island?

When John comes out, he tells Ben and Hurley the news. To save the island, they have to move the island!

This could mean several things. One, manipulate the coordinates of the island making it seem that it has moved. Or, simply change the parameters of the VR experiment and literally move the island. that is the real reason it is so difficult to find the island. Because it doesn't really exist. Onlt in the minds of the people in the VR experiment.

Significant Tidbits from tonight's show:

The comic book Richard gave John as a little boy was about a hidden land. As in the Lost island.

Michael cannot be shot. Kheeme tries to shoot him several times tonight but his gun does not fire. Just like on the mainland when Michael tried to kill himself.

Everything's going to hell on the freighter.

The captain agrees to help Desmond and Sayid escape. heading 305 to the island. Desmond stays behind.

Just wait until you read the Twilight Zone tie in to this episode. It'' blow you away.

Until next week, Get Lost...

Lost sure is at the top of its game. Last night's episode, entitled Cabin Fever, was action packed and of course, packed with events that raise even more questions!!

The few questions that jump into my mind are: why the heck is Jack's dad in Jacob's cabin? Why the heck is Claire there too? What was on Keamy's arm? How did the doc wash up on the Island a few days ago, but only is just murdered? Why does Richard Alpert never age?

Thankfully, Lostpedia is alive and well. Here is another overview from that great Lost resource! If you need more Lost insight, head over to The Lost Blog.

Star Trek: Generations: When Locke meets Goodspeed, he is chopping down a tree. This is very similar to a scene in Star Trek: Generations where Captain Picard meets Captain Kirk in the Nexus as he is chopping wood. (Movies and TV)

The test given to young Locke by Richard Alpert strongly resembles the Tibetan Buddhist ritual used to confirm a reincarnated tulku (the Dalai Lama being the most widely known).
The Bible: As the nurses wheel out Emily's premature baby, she yells out, "His name is John!", a direct quote from Luke 1:63, when Zechariah and Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist.
The comic book Richard Alpert shows young Locke is "Mystery Tales" issue #40, which was published in April of 1956 by Atlas Comics. The cover contains the text "What was the Secret of the Mysterious Hidden Land?" and "Does it Pay to Ignore the Voice of Warning?"

Buddy Holly's song "Everyday" is heard in the first flashback. Buddy Holly was a famous victim of a plane crash.

The X-Men: Richard Alpert's line "I'm Richard, John.
Love wins.

I decided to teach myself how to embroider. I'm one of those people (I think they're called women) who can't just sit in front of the TV (watching The Office and Lost) and not do anything else. I constantly need to have my hands working on something. In the past I've decimated my eyebrows with over plucking, but they're good now, so I need something else to do. Multitasking, ya know? So, I watched a few videos on how to do different stitches on YouTube (Did you know there are craft lessons on there? Awesome!), bought a hoop at the Goodwill and got to work.

Sorry the photo isn't the best. I was working on this after dark, so no natural light to go with. I really need to build a lightbox one of these days. For this project, I opened up a Word document, typed "Love wins." in and then changed the font until I found one I liked. All I had to do was size it to fit in my hoop, print it off and trace the letters onto the cloth with a water soluble seamstress pencil. From there, I just did back stitching and few French knots to dot the "i" and period. I started off with one row of back stitches, but decided to fill it in a little more with some more rows. I like that it looks chunky.

However, when Matthew came home from class, he looked at it and said, "Love wine?" I suppose looking at it really quickly, you could see an "e" instead of an "s" on wins. Since we don't drink, he was kind of confused as to why I would embroider that. Next time I'll work on making the distinction between the two a little more obvious.

I really like that phrase "Love wins." In the Bible, God tells us hundreds of times of His love for us and how we are to love others. Two of my favorites:

Book of John, Chapter 3, Verse16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life."

Here's a different version of that same verse: "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person's failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him."

Book of Luke, Chapter 10, Verse 27 The man answered, " `You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And, `Love your neighbor as yourself.' "

Love wins.
