1. I enjoy cooking for the people I LOVE the MOSTest.

2. My financial future and success is something I wonder about often lately.

3. In my heart, I knew that I would become a Nurse one day .

4. Take a block of cream cheese, add a little pesto and spread all over the top and you end up with a yummy appetizer to serve with your favorite crackers!

5. Life has gifted me with the most loving and supportive friends and family.

6. A french pedicure with spa massage is an instant vacation.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to happy hour with Abi and Cousin, tomorrow my plans include working out & some night time fun and Sunday, I want to go to tea at LoveJoy's with Abi (it says "want" and I am aware that it's probably not going to happen, since they are always booked during the weekends!

I can be the quintessential procrastinator... Don't get me wrong, I can get things done but sometimes not in the most timely matter... Unfortunately the things I tend to procrastinate on are those that are most critical because dealing with them usually gives me the most anxiety - and I can get very passive at times. I decided to compile a check list of things that I NEED NEED NEED to do, and maybe by the end of September I will have completed at least half of these items or at least before 2009 rolls around!

Bring the bag of clothes I NEED to get altered at Ocean Ave.

Bring bag of clothes to Buffalo Exchange

Reorganize clothes in my closet

Get rid of storage bins in patio

Call my boss and HR

Email out the Vegas pics to Vikki

Take Mochi and Baci to Linda Mar Vet

So I have this obsession with making lists.

Today's List is 5 THINGS I DESPERATELY NEED TO DO..

1.) WORK OUT. This mom-pouch is doing nothing for my figure. Seriously, I think the last time I ran was back in sophomore year of high school... and I can't even do ONE push up!

2.) STOP FORGETTING TO TAKE "THE PILL". I don't want to have 6 kids by the time I'm 25. But for the life of me, I can't ever remember to take it! (I should get the NuvaRing...mirena perhaps?)

3.) GO BACK TO SCHOOL. I'm super lagging it. Everyone is already graduating from their UC's and Cal State's...I don't even have A YEAR of RCC under my belt. What a slap in the face.

4.) CLEAN MY ROOM. I haven't seen the floor in weeks....

and last but not least

5.) GET MY HAIR DONE. I'm bored with it already :)

Using Listmania to Promote your Self-Published Book

If your self published book is available on Amazon.com, there are a lot of ways to promote it. Sin

If your self published book is available on Amazon.com, there are a lot of ways to promote it. Since Amazon sales should account for a large percentage of your overall book sales, this site is a good place to concentrate a lot of your efforts.

I'm going to tell you about creating a "listmania" list on Amazon. Have you ever noticed when you browse for something on Amazon, there are lists that are related to that subject that are mentioning other books and/or products?

By strategically listing products on your lists, (including YOURS of course), you can start to generate more traffic to your book listing.

Here's how YOU can create just such a list:

Sign up for an Amazon Author Connect account if you don't have one yet. Or sign-in to your current account.

Click on your personal "store" on the top tabs. Then select "Your Profile" from the sub-menu.

You will see lots of things you can personalize, including your bio and your online photograph.

But scroll down and you will see a section called "Listmania!" And this is where you create a listmania list.

Creating a Listmania List is a good way to increase exposure for your book.

Obviously, you want to ensure that your book is on your list.

But the real trick to a successful Listmania list depends upon the OTHER books you put on your list, the ones written by other people.

There are two ways to go about it.

1 - Adding books to your list that are applicable to your subject. The idea behind this concept is easy -- if someone reads your list because they were browsing a similar book, they'll be more apt to buy YOUR book because they're interested in the subject.

2 - On the other hand, you can add very popular books to your list, since more people may have a chance of seeing it, even if fewer of them will be interested in your book.

I recommend creating multiple lists and trying different tactics to see which is more successful. Amazon lets you track the number of times your list was viewed. Use these numbers to create better lists in the future.

If you have more specific questions about creating a listmania list, the Amazon FAQ will help you.

Good luck and have fun!

So most of you by now have seen the New Classics movie list at Entertainment Weekly. Needless to say, I have my own opinions on the matter. I've been mulling these over for some time now, and I can't commit to anything past a 50-movie list. These are my 50 best films since 1983. Are they simply my favorites, or do I find them to be the highest quality films? It's too difficult to separate the two-- although I'm sure The Pianist is probably a "better film" than a Norm MacDonald comedy, but there must be some logical reason why I'm compelled to leave it off in favor of Norm. There's no analysis here unfortunately, just my list. Agree, disagree, tell me how it compares to EW's list, give me feedback.

50. Dirty Work
49. Purple Rain

Faithless feat. Estelle - "Why go?"

XTC - "Dear God"

Muppyen introduserte meg for denne i november, men i sommer har jeg blitt helt hekta.

Stone Temple Pilotes - "Plush"

En godbit fra grungens skattekiste.

Temple of the Dog - "Hunger Strike"

Here are some things that keep me sane:

Savage Love podcasts. Dan Savage is wonderful, frank, articulate, funny. When I grow up I want to be just like him.

The fact that the chocolate covered gingers and cherries at whole foods are vegan.

Running for ridiculous amounts of time.

Giggly phone chats with Jess and Nicki like we're in 7th grade.

The pile of books from the library that now rests on my desk, leaving little room for school supplies to exist.

The prospect of vegan baking this weekend.

Walking around naked in my little corner of the house.

Once, last semester, I was waiting in the unfinished basement of Gregory Hall for my journalism TA to show up for a critique. She was so late that the person scheduled behind me ended up waiting with me. We talked about our articles. Hers was on how the government demonizes psychedelic drugs. She traced a study that reported that 80% of people who've done shrooms said that their lives improved as a result of the introspection that took palce during their trips. Shrooms sound like a nice, hippie-esque idea anyway. I wanna try them.

And then she told me about her sorority sisters smoking up in their house.

Good.

5. Steder jeg har bodd: Tøyen, Bogerud, Vålerenga og Oppsal... I Oslo selvfølgelig.

Love

So I thought it would be a good exercise for me to compile a list of bands and artists I have been listening to lately, so here is a preliminary (you might even call it a beta) version of this. This is the lazy version, with me just looking in my recently played iTunes tracks and listing those. There is no order to these, no ranking according to favorites. They are just in order of what was most recently played. Later on i will put a legit ranking of favorites and probably something about my favorite new (that's brand new or just newly discovered by me) artists. So here it is:

Of Montreal

John Mayer

The Bravery

Velella Velella

Iron & Wine

Damien Jurado

Menomena

Radiohead

Daniel G Harmann

Beirut

Belle & Sebastian

Karli Fairbanks

Band of Horses

Modest Mouse

The Arcade Fire

The Appleseed Cast

Point Juncture, WA

Sufjan Stevens

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head

Photosynthesis

U.S.E.

Jose Gonzalez

Coldplay

The Whitest Boy Alive

A Weather

Yeasayer

Spoon

Dane Ueland

Kimya Dawson

Holiday Unheard Of

Fields

Feist

Architecture in Helsinki

The Blow

The Shins

Pedro the Lion

The Basement

The Weepies

Discover America

Irving

Barcelona

Swan Lake

Martin Luther McCoy (Across the Universe)

The Decemberists

Emery

City and Colour

Saosin

Nomasterbacks

The Poison Control Center

Nick Jaina

The Builders and the Butchers

Starfucker

Rivers Cuomo

Loch Lomond

World's Greatest Ghosts

Weinland

Au

Stars

So that's the list, it is freaking long, and I thought about stopping it preemptively, but I didn't. I think there's room for it (on the internet...). That's from the past week, and most of those have been listened to through full CDs or songs have been listened to multiple times. I think I have played through "Hissing Fauna" ten times this past week and "Gronlandic Edit" by itself probably twenty. Basically, I listen to a lot of music.

That said, I do so because I am always getting lots of new stuff, or (re)discovering awesome older music. Recommendations would be awesome, particularly for bands out of Portland, Seattle, Spokane, or the greater northwest. Not to say I have no love for the Canadians or the rest of the U.S., but I have a special place in my heart for the NW, especially good old stumptown. So let me hear about your favorites, whether they be new or old!

Speedboarding, Cruising, Carving, Sliding, Slalom. It has forums for different parts of the country so riders can get together. It has sweet videos, cool photos, links to vendors, links to gear deals. It has a Buy/Sell/Trade section. It has gear reviews. It has taught me almost everything I know about the sport (besides the things that I have learned from just riding!), and I know a lot.

Slacklining: One of the best sites for the sport is simply Slackline.com, and for gear you can check out Slacklinebrothers.com. The sport is growing, and you should be on a line! I've been doing it for a year but I cannot even compare to some of the guys you see on these sites. They are doing crazy stuff, like front and backflips, handplants, tree stalls, and a whole slew of other tricks. Makes me look like a novice.

Drums: A company I just heard about through my friend Jake is a local custom builder out of Portland called Cockfight Drums. Nick from Holiday Unheard Of just bought a snare drum from them. I had the opportunity to see them play at the Boulevard in Spokane Sunday night, and they are doing great. They were recently signed to Standby Records and are going on a U.S. tour. It's cool seeing these guys get big since I have known three of them since grade school. I think Jared, Keegan and I were all in the same kindergarten class!

Another custom drum maker I have been coveting for a while is Truth Drums. They are some of the sickest drum sets I have ever seen. I have been getting back into music and want to invest in a nice set at some point (key phrase: at some point).

Treehugger is a site my friend Graeme showed me that is basically a hub for news about sustainable and "green" products, innovations and solutions. It has a lot of information for people who want to "green-up" their lifestyle. I definitely need to explore it some more because it looks like a great source. Just don't subscribe to the RSS Feed. I made that mistake and it clogged up my reader like nobody's business. They post very frequently.

One thing I meant to add to the blog yesterday was the site for my web browser, Camino. It is made by Mozilla, the company that also makes Firefox. Camino is basically Firefox except it is designed for Macs specifically. It's style matches the Mac interface and I much prefer it over Firefox. It is clean, simple, and very functional, which is what I want out of my browser. Firefox I find very ugly (though of course much better than Internet Explorer). The only thing that Camino lacks is the number of extensions available to Firefox, but I don't use extensions anyway.

Well, that's all for now since I need to go eat lunch (tuna melt, yum). More later (maybe).

Here is a list of some websites, blogs, and random stuff I have been reading about and exploring recently:

Pomomusings — Postmodern/Emergent Theology from a Whitworth and Princeton Theological Seminary grad.

Josh Brown — Interesting guy with good insights on faith and politics stuff

God's Politics — Jim Wallis' (God's Politics, The Great Awakening) Blog w/ Brian McLaren, Shane Claiborne and others from Sojourners.

Jesus Creed — Interesting stuff to check out.

The Ooze — Good articles

Reclaiming the Mission — Name is pretty self-explanatory. Dudes seeking to live missionally.

Jesus Manifesto — Sometimes a bit much for me but still thought provoking.

Evangelical Manifesto — Completely different from the preceding manifesto. This recently released document is a statement from some influential and peeved evangelical leaders who seek to reclaim the name "evangelical" which has been co-opted by certain figures for political purposes. Some commentary here here and here. (And for Jim Wallis' comments about the media reaction go here).
Jim McPherson — Jim is a professor at the university I attend, Whitworth University, in the communications department, and is the faculty advisor for the student newspaper. In his blog he discusses the media primarily, but also how faith informs the media and other issues.

Bike Portland — I have been getting more into biking lately and like being informed about what's going on in my beloved town. Plus, they have great tips and info for novices like me.

Other Bike Websites: Articles, etc — Bicycle Design, Commute by Bike, Velocommuter; Tips and info — Jim Langley has lots of good information about bike maintenance and different tricks that any new biker should know. Helped me a bunch. Finally, my new love is fixed gear bikes, and there's no better site than the Fixed Gear Gallery.

Computer stuff:

If you have a Mac, then you undoubtedly will want to at some point adjust and customize your beautiful system to match your intelligent, glowing personality. Go to InterfaceLIFT to get some groovy high-resolution desktop photos and other cool stuff. Dockulicious is a cool site that has sweet themes to apply to your dock and make it look sleek or sassy. Right now mine is a cool carbon fiber skin. You have to download some software for these particular ones, but other sites have directions for how to do it yourself in the Mac console, if you are confident messing around with your system. For more awesome desktop photography, check out Mandolux; this guy is amazing. Great composition, mainly pretty simple but emotive. He has them in tons of different sizes and a lot of them are designed for dual-monitor setups, if you are into that sort of thing.

One last suggestion if you have a Mac: download Quicksilver. Not that we really need more "time-savers" (yeah right), but if ever there was one, this is it. Open any program by doing a quick shortcut command (for me it is Ctrl+Space) and begin typing the name of any program and just hit enter when it pops up. Takes seconds to figure out. It really helps when I want to open, say, Google Earth. Instead of opening up the Finder and browsing the Applications folder until I find it, I simply type "Goo" and already it is displayed and ready to execute the "open" command. Actually, on my machine, all I have to type is "G" for Google Earth to pop up, though obviously it won't be the same for everyone. Not only is this program extremely functional but it fades in and out seamlessly, so it never clutters your workspace. Used in conjunction with Mac's default Command+Space shortcut to open Spotlight (the search engine) you can literally find anything on your computer in seconds. +1 for Apple.

This is kinda random, but check out the Wikimedia Commons. It has a bunch of freely-licensed media (photos, animations, videos, charts, etc.) that you can use for just about any purpose. Which is great when you are trying to avoid breaking copyright laws for school projects or things that will be viewed publicly. Anything to stay out of jail, right?

Last night I was at my favorite local coffee shop in Spokane, the Empyrean, and there was a show/performance by locals Joel Smith and Kaylee Cole (Folk), as well as Kurt (last name?) who threw down some slam poetry. The main event, however, was Danny Sherrard, the 2007 U.S. Slam Poetry Champion. This guy was insane, and definitely worth giving a look, even if you have never heard of slam poetry and think it is inherently girly (I will save my cynical remarks about your pettiness for later). He has a Myspace page you can reach here. He's only 22, but he is going to represent the U.S. in France at the Poetry World Cup at the end of this month. If you have a Myspace, send him a little love and encouragement. I talked to him after the slam and he is a really cool guy, and an amazing poet.

If you go to Whitworth, and haven't heard about the Whitworth Forum, it is definitely time you checked it out. Though it sometimes is just a bunch of cynical college (ahem, University) students debating politics, religion, and complaining about our oft-underappreciated school, there are some true gems in there, if you are so bold as to explore the archives. I've even written there once or twice. If you think you have the chops to run something like this, Daniel Walters (Whitworthian Opinion Editor this year but now graduated) is looking for people to replace him and the other students who ran it this year. I think it could be a really beneficial thing for Whitworth, it just needs to get on its feet with good writers and consistent posting.

If you are a Portlander and in on the music scene, consider reading the Willamette Week's "local cut," which has news on artists coming through town and big events in the Portland music scene. They were among the first who noted the mischievous way The Decemberists were put on the bill for Barack Obama's rally last Sunday (which, notably, brought a crowd of 75,000 to Waterfront Park!). If you still live in Portland you should definitely get the paper edition of WW, just because it's an awesome paper, but the website is updated frequently with new info, whereas the print edition is weekly (hence Willamette Week).

I will just throw this out there, since I am a bit of a news buff, but my favorite sources of news are: BBC, Al Jazeera, Christian Science Monitor (the only thing I have Julia Stronks to thank for), The New York Times; and finally my two most reluctant sources which I only read so I know what they are saying — CNN, and Fox News. Another way I like to get my news in a more expedient manner is through Google News.

Speaking of Google, the way I keep track of many of the blogs and websites I frequent is through a program called Google Reader. It is an RSS Feed manager, meaning that it aggregates all of the different blogs that I read and puts them into one place, which is much more accessible and manageable. New posts come up chronologically from every site that I subscribe to. It is pretty easy to figure out and once you get the hang of it you will no longer have to go from site to site in order to read new posts. Instead, they come to you.

One awesome website you should definitely check out if you like music is Last.fm. There you can type in the name of any band or artist (within reason) and up pops their profile, and typically a few songs by them you can listen to. But you can get that on Myspace. What is so great about Last.fm is that once you type in an artist's name, it will bring up a playable playlist of similar artists for you to listen to. This is a great way to discover new artists and expand your musical repertoire. Also, they have a downloadable program that does the same thing more efficiently for your computer. If you download it, the program also keeps track of songs you play on iTunes, and can give you artist bios, and other good stuff. PLUS, if you create a profile on the site, it will keep a history of tracks played for friends to see and get new sweet ideas! My profile is here. See what I have been listening to. Oh, and the reason I have played "Mad World" by Gary Jules 174 times is not because I am obsessed with the guy; it used to be the song I woke up to with my sweet Mac alarm program, Aurora.

Well, I need to go to the airport to catch a flight to L.A. in a few minutes so I will stop there. This list is a bit more extensive than I intended and extremely random, but so am I in many ways. And it has been a good exercise, organizing all the things that I have been passionate about recently. I will add a few more things later, including some drumming, longboarding, and slacklining websites. Wish me luck on my journey — it could be a cataclysmic day...

Alan Scott (Creative Industries, Goodlyburn) has started using Amazon Listmania to list books he recommends for student use, and also highlighting those that are available in Perth College Library.
Which is a seriously good idea!

So I have a few things I wanted to get written down somewhere, and like usual I wind up forgetting most of it before I forget... so:

1. LED throwies
2. Earth Magnets
3. DVD Authoring Software
4. DOCTORS THURSDAY @ 9AM
5. Update iPod
6. A) iBook project search
B) Old laptop project search
C) Janet's laptop
7. Papier Mache Tree for Emily
8. Movement; Nomadic, sporadic, specific, arbitrary, confined spaces, lofty ideas.

In other news, if you're still reading this, you may have had a life less-ordinary kind of day like I did. I have made some major decisions lately, and it's fucking stupid. However, with all that being said and out there in the open. I dont have any idea as to where this post is going, so it's gonna stop now.

ps: that title is so long that I actually gave up typing it in when i realized I probably wont be able to find an end to that text area.

pps: we just passed the 1 year anniversary of Anna Nicole Smith's death, so I am sharing this:

Du bruker mer penger i uka enn i helgene

Du rydder jevnlig i dypfryseren

Helst før two and a half men

Du blir lykkelig over en ny kjele

Ja, i grunn.

Nei, men god ide.

Nei. Jo færre mobilpratende drittunger, jo bedre.

Du får såpe i julegave

Du bruker samme tepose to ganger
Nei.

Du melder deg inn i bokklubben bare for å få kaffeserviset
"Jaggu, har'em laga bok av ringenes herre også nå"
Du har våtservietter i bilen
Ja, men det er av grisegrunner. Tenk koffert haha

Du soler deg i vanlig BH

Du danser swing til all slags musikk

Konklusjon? I'm a bitch

Pj

The Gravel Pit is going in reverse, looking back at half a year blogging and reviewing. Despite fail

The Gravel Pit is going in reverse, looking back at half a year blogging and reviewing. Despite failing my own “The Seven Days Countdown To New Year” Challenge, an ultimate effort to catch up on the best 2007 releases, I have still read some great books that I wanted to share with you here. In a way it is frustrating, I've spent my whole 2007 getting through George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire (before I started blogging) and Prince of Nothing (with The Thousandfold Thought next up for 2008) as well as a few other series. I've sort of been playing catch-up in reading. Most of the works I have read, was not material that came out this year. Nonetheless, I narrowed this list down to books I rated 8 out of 10 or higher. Better to treat this best of list as a (possible) 'source of recommendations' than a definite list of the sweetest '07 books. Enjoy.

Top Nine of 2007

1. The Warrior Prophet - R. Scott Bakker
The absolute number one this year. A mind blowing read with excellent prose, great world building and an impressing scale to go with that as well. The characterisation is rich and deep, the character really intrigue in their flawed ways. To me discovering an author like Bakker in 2007 was one of the highlights in my miserable life.

2. No Dominion - Charlie Huston
No Dominion is simply a blast. Offering a gritty noir-style with brutal pace combined with a nicely multi-layered plot. Joe Pitt ends up making some interesting choices in this second volume and I would argue that it is even better than its predecessor.

3. Altered Carbon - Richard Morgan
Altered Carbon is great and extremely enjoyable novel. It presents some interesting technological ideas, has a realized, fully fleshed-out protagonist and excellent pacing for most parts. It is gritty and realistic enough to be accessible and thus comes highly recommended to every fan of the genre. Morgan is one of the masters of SF still writing (kind of ironic that he is working on a fantasy effort now). I will be reading this year's effort Black Man in 2008 for sure.

4. The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
The Lies of Locke Lamora is exceedingly well written, set in a colorful setting and was the biggest debut of 2006. It has nearly everything a fantasy fan craves for, it is fresh breath through fantasy-land. Guaranteed fun.

5. The Darkness That Comes Before - R. Scott Bakker
Dense writing, packing much information in just a couple of striking sentences. The mark of a truly talented author. If listing the Warrior Prophet as my best read of the year has not already convinced you, this should do. Before I picked up the Prince of Nothing series there was just darkness, now I have seen the light.

6. Red Seas Under Red Skies - Scott Lynch
Red Seas Under Red Skies is, despite some flaws, still an immensely enjoyable novel by a talented author. Scott Lynch managed to improve in some areas, namely the characterization of his protagonists and maintaining a fast pace. I have not figured which work is the better of the two, this one or the 2006 debut of the year listed above. Does it matter? No, do yourself a favor and read them.

7. Already Dead - Charlie Huston
Joe Pitt seriously kicks the asses of most other vampires that I have encountered before in this genre. Forget Anne Rice, matter of fact fuck Interview with the Vampire, Joe Pitt tears it to shreds. Enough said.

8. Twilight Falling - Paul S. Kemp
What? A Forgotten Realms novel listed here? Damn right. Forget R.A. Salvatore, in the hands of Paul S. Kemp resides the true power of the Wizard of the Coasts brand. A plot is packed full of action, more than enough to keep you interested right till the end. An unpretentious but nonetheless exceedingly fun novel. Classic Sword & Sorcery executed very well.

9. Midnight's Mask - Paul S. Kemp
A final volume that managed to impress me? And another Forgotten Realms novel listed here? By the same author? You'd guessed it right. Midnight's Mask presents an extremely satisfying ending to the Erevis Cale saga and that alone is worthy of praise. Other than that, it is fun, engaging and entertaining. What more can you ask for?

Other 2007 releases

- The Blade Itself - Joe Abercrombie ('07 US release)
Strictly speaking a 2006 release (in the UK) but since Joe Abercrombie went on a trip across the pond, this novel managed to sneak into this list. One hell of a naughty novel, it is. The Blade Itself is good summer reading, as it is fairly straight forward told story with enough pace and action to keep you interested. The novel also attempts to 'tweak' the fantasy cliches in an interesting manner. You could do much worse than picking this up.

- Ragamuffin - Tobias S. Buckell
an enjoyable novel with memorable characters to whom I look forward meeting again in the next novel Sly Mongoose. The rapid switching from different point of views in the latter parts of the novel does result in a bit awkward pacing, but the solid characterization, the unique Caribbean flavor and the craftly executed space opera setting fully make up for this major drawback. An accomplished second novel by a clearly talented author. If you are looking for something different, well go ahead.

- Reaper's Gale - Steven Erikson
I was not impressed as much as I hoped with this novel, nonetheless it was a good effort and managed to build up anticipation (once again) for the next one, Toll of Hounds, set in the areas known as Darujhistan and Black Coral. Although Reaper's Gale disappointed slightly, I'd consider Erikson's A Malazan Tale of the Fallen still as one of the best epic fantasy series of the millennium.

- Winterbirth - Brian Ruckley ('07 US release)
Another sneaky novel! Winterbirth is very solid, decent debut by Brian Ruckley. It offers extensive worldbuilding, good characterization of the main character and an interesting view of both sides of the conflict the novel is revolving around. Added as a bonus you get couple of nice maps, a timeline and list of characters. On the flipside, it is a not entirely original piece of work, the characterization other than that of the protagonist was rather weak and the pace was quite slow. I will wait for Bloodheir; the next novel to give my definite thumbs up or down.

- The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
My last review of 2007 and sadly I could not end with a bang. The Name of the Wind was disappointing, left too many threads hanging and was too much hype. Nonetheless, I see potential. Rothfuss handled the flow of the story with the hand of a seasoned writer. He might well surprise me in 2009 when his next novel will be published.

The worst of 2007

- Spaceman Blues: A Love Song - Brian Francis Slattery
Sometimes you encounter these novels you just do not "get". It was just impossible to discern any interesting ideas in the confusion mess the author (intentionally I presume) created. The novel fell flat on its face because it goes beyond simply telling a story. It tries to be stylistically innovative, to be surreal like a Dalí painting, to be a kaleidoscopic celebration of immigrant life, to play it loose with time and place - but ultimately forgets to simply tell the damned story. Bad.

- The Electric Church - Jeff Somers
The Electric Church is a classic example of trying too hard in terms of plotting resulting in an uneven paced story. If you are looking for action, there is plenty of it but it is hardly believable. The characterization of the characters is rather weak and neither original nor challenging. The lack of description did not manage to raise the quality of the novel to a higher bar. Guess what? I don't want even talk about this. Worse.

- Armageddon's Children - Terry Brooks
Aaaaaargh. I want my money back. And my hours of reading wasted on this piece of shit. Now! Lack of originality, resurrecting dogs, shit sliding downhill - going nowhere. The worst of 2007. Hitting rock-bottom with the speed of light.

Big thank you's to the FBS establishment and folks at the board, particularly Jay for the inspiring Jay 101 reads list and Damon for putting so much effort and money on the line to make FBS bigger. I predict 2008 is going to be the year of Heliotrope! Also thanks to my fellow bloggers, you know who you are, for all the linkage and support I got during my six months of running a blog. Thanks to Ran ( for running a great message board) and the folks at westeros.org for the interesting discussions and thank you's for everyone I've forgotten here (sure I missed a few)!

To another year of blogging & fun!

Cheers,
