Well look no further than the new album by Sigur Ros. Who cares if you can't pronounce either their album or song titles, music is universal right?

Their new album is streaming for ONE WEEK ONLY (before its big release). Enjoy, or let us know why you don't! We won't take is personally.

I am often asked where I hear about new music and my answer is usually pretty vague. Mostly because I hear about new music from so many different places; friends, family, radio, magazines, podcasts, etc. But I thought I would throw out some of my sources that keep me privy to both new music by classic artists and new artists altogether. One source is the NPR music website shown on the links list to the right. Newly remodeled, it really offers something for nearly every musical taste, sans thrash metal and Barry Manilow. For the more technically savvy, they also produce two podcasts under the name All Songs Considered and are worth the subscription (free). One showcases new music and the other features full concerts, mostly from the fabled 9:30 club in Washington DC. Check out their archive and prepare to pick your jaw up off the floor.

Another site I frequent is from radio station KCRW in Santa Monica, CA. Morning Becomes Eclectic is one of their programs and it features live in-studio performances which can be streamed live or via the archive. They do have a video stream as well for those who need more stimulus with their radio. My man Billy Bragg is performing on Monday. Check him out.

Finally, check out Pandora (thanks to Devin for the heads up on it) and Last FM if you haven't already heard of them. Both create "personalized" radio stations for you based on your musical tastes, using some sort of crazy algorithm which can read your mind!

Whenever I listen to this song-am mesmerized- its so thought provoking, takes me into another world - forget myself and the surrounding.

Life is so uncertain, :-? everything is the divine play of the supreme lord....the song says the same :

Deepavu Ninnade gaLiyu ninnade, aaradirali beLaku
kaDalu ninnade, haDagu ninnade muNugadirali badaku........

'Everything is yours- the light, air, water......do not put off the light of life- the shore/bank (as in river)belong to You oh god, so does the boat in which we sail-do not let the life drown/get washed away'

BeTTavu ninnade, bayalu ninnade, habbi nagali preeti

neLalu bisilu yellavu ninnave irali ekareeti

The mountains and the plains are yours; let love blossom(the poet means to say let there be vegetation/there ought not be a draught)

The sunny days and rainy are yours -measure them on a same scale

Alle ondu siDilu iigondu mugilu, ninage alankara

alle ondu hakki, ille ondu muguLu ninage namaskara

kaDalu ninnade,haDagu ninnade muLugadirali baduku....

The roaring thunder and the rain clouds adorn you like jewels; the birds and smiling faces sing thy praise.....dont let the boat of life to be drowned

Alli raNa dundubhi illi ondu veeNe ninna pratidwani,

aa mahakavya, ii bhavageete ninna padadhwani

deepavu ninnade, gaLiyu ninnade aaradirali beLaku
kaDalu ninnade, haDagu ninnade muNugadirali badaku........

Amidst the war cries, I string the melodious Veena which is your very voice; Epics have been written in your praise, I'm singing a song for you which I regard it as a foot-step to realise you......Thou art the light and wind too ; let not the light of my life extinguish, let the shore of my life along with the boat in which I sail by thy support; not wash away/drown.
This song is from the film 'Mysuru Mallige'- the lyrics has been written by KS. Narasimhaswami- such wonderful lyrics, equally well sung by S. Janaki- undoubtedly one of the most versatile singer.

The picturisation too is good-just a lamp in the room enough to see the face of the actress.

The song ia available here (Deepavu ninnade)

One method I like to use to inspire my writing is listening to music. I have a number of choices, such as soundtracks, rock, blues, classical, and just about any other type of music out there. Depending on the scene will depend on the type of music I choose. Here are a few tips:

Create playlists in your music player (Media Player, RealPlayer, other) with labels such as battle, romance, dialogue, or another 'scene' them you want.

You can copy your CD/DVD onto your hard drive to create the playlists. How this is done depends on your player.

You can listen to music online if you have high speed Internet (see links below).

Headset helps drown out outside noise, filling your ears with music, and allowing you to lose yourself in your story.

ISerenity- This site offers a means to use 'white noise' or ambiant sounds you can use for free. Simply pick your sound, and let it fill you. I like the wind chimes the best.

AOL Online Radio- offers a huge variety of music to choose from; most of which has no interruptions and you can hear the whole song. If you sign up (free) you can add up to 10 preset stations of choice. The link to hear the radio is near the top of the screen where it says "listen now".

Playlist User- offers a means to create playlists you can listen to on various styles of music. One drawback is often you find the song you like is no longer available.

Amazon.com downloads- Believe it not, there is an area on Amazon.com in which you can download music. These are samples, giving you a bit of a taste of music you might not otherwise hear. You can also buy songs on an individual basis through them. PLEASE note: backup your music in case your computer crashes.

Writer's Prompt:

Click here to listen to the music. (or listen to any song you have on hand). Write on whatever the music provokes inside of you such as a scene, a character, or start of a story. What images are brought to mind?

LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great

This is a song about that slow, sinking feeling you get when you receive bad news; that dreaded moment when the phone rings at an unnatural hour. Although the lyrics and melody seem rather casual (and even upbeat) at first, that ominous, Joy Division-esque warble of the bass synth keeps pounding home the reality of the situation until it finally sinks in. Only then does the song begin to lift off, capturing the feeling and paying tribute to that certain someone, suddenly gone.
