My boss introduced me to a local band (Portland anyway) that has since become pretty big, Pink Martini. You know they are decent if you manage to find them on Pandora. They cover the gamut on Jazz styles, and have some excellent original compositions that equal the holy jazz standards. One of my rants about straight Jazz is how stagnant the compositions are. Everything turns out to be a rehash of songs that were written 75 years ago, known as the "Jazz standards." It doesn't matter how much I love the classics or the artists who perform them, because it all boils down to choosing which rehash I enjoy the most. It is almost like the classic Jazz community has suffered from writer's block since the end of the second world war. Granted there have been some great artists since that time, many with great original compositions (the greatest selling Jazz album of all time was Herbie Hancock's Head-hunters, but it is considered more of a mix of jazz, funk, acid... ), but nobody has really composed anything in the style of more archaic forms of Jazz that hit the spot for me. Pink Martini really transcends the ordinary, and captures the essence of the jazz standards without rehashing all of them (they do rehash a bit, so I can't make them exempt).

How did a young buck like me get on a jazz kick? I did play in school jazz bands for 4 years or so. But many people remember the underground swing movement revival at the close of the 20th century. We had a swing club after school where we tried to teach ourselves to swing dance and throw girls around (aerials). It was all fun and games until someone with reckless self-confidence would try a tricky aerial and drop a girl on her head... There were also larger swing groups that would meet within the county. I have never been a good dancer, but swing was the only style that really caught my attention long enough to learn a move or two. At the time, a few swing bands even made some big billboard hits, notably Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the Cherry Poppin Daddies (from Eugene, OR).

Most of the Jazz I listen to wouldn't be considered fit for an elevator in hell by most standards today, but Pink Martini seems to hit the spot with some of the pickiest ears.

Some of the other Jazz artists who have really fascinated me in the last few years are Bill Evans, Lisa Ekdahl and the Peter Nordahl trio (who earned the nickname "Jazz Kitten" in our little circle), and Raymond Scott.

Lisa Ekdahl is the latest angel to give me that little *schwing* feeling.  Her voice is like honey.  I hope you enjoy.
