Erinnert mich stark an Dasani -überteuertes Leitungswasser in Flaschen-.

Recently the mobile phone market has undergone a radical transformation with an explosion of open so

Recently the mobile phone market has undergone a radical transformation with an explosion of open source initiatives and projects. Here is a brief description of some of them.

Openmoko

Their product is the Neo FreeRunner phone running the Openmoko software platform, and it is by far the most 'open' of all the mobile projects. Not only is the software totally open source and completely customizable, the CAD files for the physical phone are avaliable as well.

Unfortunately this phone is really only for the uber geek, since its primary value is in customizability and openness. If those aren't your main concerns, you can get a lot more for less.

Update: The Neo FreeRunner has sold out in less then a week! But more are on the way. Read about it here.

Android

Created by Google for the Open Handset Alliance, Android provides what Google calls a complete mobile platform. This means that it comes with all the software needed for a mobile phone, from the kernel to the core libraries to the basic applications.

In addition to the basic Android system, the are already quite a few third party applications built, due to Google releasing the SDK early and then running the developer challange. You can find many of these early applications at helloandroid, and if you want help building you own you can visit anddev.

Aside from the current lack of actual phones, the biggest problem with Android is their implementation of Java. Instead of sticking to a Java standard, which would have allowed for possible cross-compatibility with many existing applications, they went and created their own virtual machine called Dalvik. For the reason see this article.

LiMo Foundation

As opposed to Android, the LiMo Platform does not come with any applications whatsoever. Instead, each handset manufacturer is responsible for creating all their own applications, from the most basic onward. This means that the software on LiMo phones from different manufacturers will be unique in appearance and even function.

While there is currently no SDK for the LiMo Platform, the APIs are avaliable and well documented, and the SDK is slated to come out late 2008. There are also about a dozen phones already avaliable running the LiMo Platform.

The main issue that the LiMo Foundation has is a lack of a public following and hype. While Android and Openmoko are leveraging the power of community, LiMo seems to be relying solely on the will and desire of the Foundation's companies to use LiMo for purely technical reason. In other words, no one is clamoring for LiMo and very few third parties are writing software for it.

Symbian Foundation

After all the other open source excitment, Nokia bought Symbian and announced the new Foundation which would set it free. Despite the publicity stunt feeling this gives me, most tech news sites are at the least hopeful about the new Symbian Foundation.

Because I don't really know all the details, I am just going to link to some of the more informative news articles.

First Symbian Foundation handsets due in 2010 (zdnet). Link.

Nokia buys Symbian, will open Symbian OS (linux.com). Link.

Other Important Articles

Android vs LiMo: What's the difference? Link.

Crossing the chasm with Android: Can we view disruptive initiatives like Android in the context of the existing value chain? (This is a detailed and slightly hard to read analysis of the mobile market and how android might affect change). Link.

Ooh, I love fuzzy Saturday nights! Is it wrong to automatically assume that any guy who hits on me has mad yellow fever? Because I usually do. All I know is that we made it to 49 Grove, got a lot of awkward balding men at Off the Wagon before hitting up the usual wonderfully questionable Bar None... in a LIMO.

That's right. We're so classy we roll up to a college bar in a stretch. We'd just been leaving MacDougal when a Mr. John Henry, Professional Limousine Driver rolls down the window. "You ladies need a ride?"

So we took it and he was, contrary to our prejudgments, quite the gentleman. He stroked our egos and in a 10-minute ride we got a motivational speech that involved him advising us not to ever give it up for at least three months because "if he really loves you kissing and holding hands is enough!" That's right John Henry. You tell 'em.

John Henry gets a picture of us on his iPhone as exchange for driving us around.
What questionable things will he do with it? Only time will tell.

Other memories: boy who could not dance but was so hilariously cocky it was almost appealing, enormous slice of mushroom pizza that really hit the spot, and John Henry calling Jade at 3 a.m. to announce he'd found us two good-looking boys. "They're good guys! I screened them for you!"

...why is my life not a sitcom? Someone please tell me.

I am still somewhat intoxicated from brunch at Bondi Road. I'm baffled as to why there aren't brunch spots with unlimited mimosas in San Diego. Frankly, I think it's a brilliant marketing concept.

Jade rockin' a walk-of-shame outfit (AKA my newspaper staff t-shirt),

Unless there are, and I've just been missing out. In which case I fully intend to make my fall quarter a fabulous one, filled with many Screwdriver Sundays.

I have so much to take care of in the next 24 hours. My ass-kink has not recovered, for the record. This week I also need badly to: get a manipedi, buy new clothes (how is it that I've only been here for three weeks and I've worn everything in my wardrobe twice?), write something of substance, etc. I think blogging, which once served a *get out of writer's block* purpose just kills time now. Instead of doing anything productive I just blog and tell myself that was my one accomplishment of the afternoon. As if destroying any credibility with future employers is an accomplishment. Ha. I so funny.

Oh and I'm officially starting the Don't Ask Me for My Number If You Aren't Going to Call Club. It's DAMFMNIYAGTCC for short.

I wanted to capture all of the little details that are sometimes NOT as focused on or paid attention to.

My goal was to get the behind the scenes candid moments of Tara & Adam's wedding.

I was also interested in some of the typical shots such as "the shoes shot" that you see a lot from wedding photogs and I wanted to find a special way to capture them. I tried 3 different things around the room that I didn't love until I noticed this framed painting Tara's mom had against the wall!

I read it and decided that it was PERFECT!

Always kiss me goodnight

Tara's mom had the invitation all set up at the house with cute wedding bells hanging nearby:

I told Tara "don't do anything without telling me first!" which made me laugh but I meant that I wanted to make sure I got all of the little details and I didn't want to miss a thing!

I followed her around her mom & dad's house and captured moments like this...

Putting on her jewelry in her mom's bedroom mirror:

Getting out her grandmother's ring out of the box to wear (her something old):

Mom looking beautiful...waiting to put her dress on:

Dad getting his tie on:

And I even captured behind the scenes moments of the photographer showing Tara and her parents one of the photos he had just taken.

(Gerard the photog and I go waaaay back... I told him I may ask him for a job one day LOL)

After the photographer left we had some time before the limos arrived so Tara and I stood near the front door waiting.

So much natural light was shining through the door that I was psyched to not used a flash for any of these!

I saw her fix her hair and I told her to just keep her hand there. I loved it...

Somewhere in between me following everyone around I managed to get dressed, do my make-up, fix my hair and then be ready in time to see Tara & the bridal party into the limos and follow them all to the reception:

I ration tears, quota smiles, restrict words. Limitations and measures are important to me; everyth

I ration tears, quota smiles, restrict words. Limitations and measures are important to me; everything has to be restricted to limit the overpowering emotions I have been feeling. Everyday I want to cry, and when ever I am by myself my eyes start to water. I close my eyes I count to ten, then twenty, then one hundred. I worry that when I start to cry I will not stop, I know it wont be little quiet tears but load sobs with water gushing down my face for hours, I feel unable to move but craw along the floor and into bed unable to stop myself. There I must lie until I fall asleep, it is such an energy draining process. This is something me and my social worker debated on Friday; she wants me to cry more and let things out, I want to cry less as Hannah does not do tears.

I don't just ration tears because I am scared of the emotion that engulfs me, since I was very young I have limited the amount of emotion I show. It all started with the idea that if you smile and laugh everyday how will people know which day is your happiest yet, how can you make a distinction between average days and exceedingly good days. People used to tell me to smile more as it makes the world a happier place and brightens up a room but I used to answer that I smile for myself and not for the joy of other people. Since then this rule had been applied to most areas of my life. If you cry all the time and t everything people will stop comforting you, if you are seen to be crying over spilt milk people will view you as weak. I want to be thought of as a strong person, someone who never cries. Someone like my father who I have never seen cry, due to this I cannot cry in front of other people.

The theory goes that if I tell everyone all the time that today is a bad day and I do it everyday how can you distinguish which days are worse from the others. Then when you are left having such a bad day that you cannot cope by yourself how can they tell this bad day is any worse than the day before, I suppose it s like the boy who cried wolf analogy. If every time I saw my psychiatrist I said that I have thought about suicide, it would get very dull for both sides, the information would be as worthless to him as if I had reported that my fingerprint was the same or that my eves were still green. However, if I only tell him when I need or want extra help then it's a useful piece of information. While I may have had thought that I would like to die, I am not at risk so there is little point in telling anyone, but the trick is telling someone at the right time; before you are so serious that you cannot tell anyone because you do not want to be stopped but after it is just fleeting thoughts. This might be a risky strategy it might go desperately wrong but you cannot blame anyone else but yourself as you are responsible for the decisions you make. I suppose I know that if I ever do kill myself it will be the only choice i have left, suicide is never your plan A, it's the plan X that you take when everything else has been tried, "People with depression don't kill themselves to frighten an errant boyfriend. They kill themselves because it is the obvious and right thing to do at that point. It is the only positive step they can think of."- Dr Kay McKallan writing in the British Medical Journal. Unlike usual I have become sidetracked, really suicide deserves a whole post of its own.

Last line...

I have my dress at last, and my leavers ball is on Monday evening so that's a weight off my mind. I hope I look formal enough though s most of my friends have full length dresses and we are going full out (a rather naff streached limo, but I have never been in one before so it will be an experience) with a pre and post party.

"Looks like there's only room for one mobile Linux standards body in these here parts, and LiMo's recent momentum and partnership deals have apparently swept up the members of the Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) -- the two groups just announced that as of July, LiPS will be folded into LiMo", reports Engadget. This piece of news, with the recent Nokia/Symbian news too, prompted me to write this opinion piece that I had on the back of mind for a while now, where I offer an analogy as to how today's smartphone OSes compare to the 1985 personal computer OS climate and where does this may lead.

In a previous post I commented on how the open-source development community responded negatively t

In a previous post I commented on how the open-source development community responded negatively to comments made by Dr. Ari Jaaksi, VP of Software & Head of Open-Source Operations for Nokia. Dr. Jaaksi suggested that the open-source community needed to learn a thing or two about the mobile space & that the community needed to change their current approach for developing software applications due to the out-of-date business rules that are still enforced by the mobile industry.

Two days ago Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, made a very different statement when they made a move to buy up the remaining ownership in the smartphone software maker Symbian. If the $410 million deal goes through, Nokia will retain 47.9% majority ownership of Symbian. This move by Nokia indicates concern for those lower-cost mobile phone operating systems from Google Android & the LiMo Foundation.

With the mobile market heating up & businesses moving quickly to develop mobile applications it is key for Nokia to be running an OS which is widely accepted by the development community. Today, Symbian is used in two-thirds of smartphones being sold. Symbian's closest rival is Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS, which has just 13% of the market. Of course, both Apple & Google plan to gain a piece of this market very quickly. Apple has been making a lot of noise with its new software release for the 3G iPhone & although rumored to be behind Google is sure to gain a significant piece of this market when its Android software is released.

The good news for application developers & businesses is that we'll have options when deciding which devices & operating systems we want to develop applications for. Because of the increased competition in this market both device & OS manufactures will be more likely to bend & do more to ensure we are using their solution & not their competitors.

The greatest news of the week seems to be that Nokia is going to completely buy out the biggest mobi

The greatest news of the week seems to be that Nokia is going to completely buy out the biggest mobile OS maker Symbian. Nokia which already held a 48 p.c. stake in the company is going to buy out the remaining 52 p.c. So what? Is it a raw deal? What does Nokia want to do with the new deal in picture? Let us have a look.

Symbian: Symbian was a company which until now designed operating systems for mobile devices. The Os was largely proprietary meaning that no one else could use it without the permission of the Symbian consortium. Yes, the Symbian consortium (Symbian Ltd.) was established on June 24 1998 as a partnership project between the big bosses of the mobile space Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Psion, to exploit the convergence between the PDA's and the Mobile Phones. Soon other players joined the consortium like LG electronics, Samsung, Panasonic, and NTT DoCoMo.

What was the aim of the Symbian consortium? The Symbian consortium aimed at developing a unified closed source OS which the members could use with some modifications pertaining to the user interfaces and development of device drivers for proprietary hardware boards. The organizations joining the consortium after paying a particular license fees which would entitle them under the Eclipse License and they could use the OS.

Market: Symbian OS is the leading OS in the 'smart mobile device' market. Statistics published February 2007 showed that Symbian OS had a 67% share of the 'smart mobile device' market, with Microsoft having 13% through Windows CE and Windows Mobile and RIM having 10%. Other competitors include Palm OS, iPhone OS, Qualcomm's BREW, Google Android and SavaJe.

Current Trends and the OS (open sourcing) of OS's (operating systems): Over the years Nokia has been the leading mobile phone manufacturer in the world. Infact every 4 out of the 10 phones sold in the world is a Nokia. But the general trend over the years in the Smartphone market has been shifting to a more ready to market device. This has led to the focus on software development for the Smartphone's. However the developer community was not too happy. Despite the software being licensed out the developers had tough time adapting themselves to different user interfaces wherein Symbian has long served as the underpinnings for several palmtop interfaces, including Nokia's own S60, Sony Ericsson's UIQ, and NTT/DoCoMo's MOAP (Mobile Oriented Applications Platform). These varying user interfaces were a problem. This is where the developer's started shifting to the open source movements like LiMo (Linux Mobile) and then Google came out with Android. The Symbian Foundation will unify those user interfaces, which will likely make application development easier and more consistent across a wide range of phones. This is exactly what Google wants to do with Android: unify the mobile Linux community behind a consistent interface that's compatible across a wide variety of phones and available under an open-source license. According to sources at Nokia, code will be released to the public for the first time in either the last quarter of 2008 or the first quarter of 2009. All of Symbian OS and its development tools will be made available by 2010. At this time, Nokia and its Symbian Foundation allies plans on releasing the program under the Eclipse Public License 1.0. In short, Symbian and its major interfaces are well on their way to becoming a completely open source operating system and development platform. This spells potential trouble for Linux embedded systems. Google, faced with delays in its own Linux-based Android platform, made the best of things in its response to Nokia's news. A representative for Sean Carlson, Google's manager of global communications, said, "Openness fosters innovation, benefiting consumers. We're very pleased to see other major players in the mobile industry moving in this direction."

Winners and Losers:

1. Apple can be seen sailing through the Smartphone market through innovation. It has already created a niche market for itself through technical prowess. So it is highly unlikely that its proprietary software policy will affect the sales. It can continue to innovate and attract new customers. Thus Apple is going to remain largely unaffected by this deal.

2. Symbian is been running on 60% of the mobile phones worldwide courtesy Nokia and since majority of Nokia's phones run Symbian it's obvious that Nokia does not want to lose out in the race and wants to be the market leader and develop Symbian to match the other upcoming competitors like android and the Limo. Moreover unifying the various platforms and open sourcing is going to make the developer community stick to Symbian Os and help in fostering innovation and better software for Nokia users. The developer community which was being wooed by the Open source Linux Mobile community and the Google's fully open sourced Android are now going to stick to Symbian. Thus Nokia clearly emerges as the winner out of this deal. It is going to lose out on some revenues though the licensing but it is going to earn through other means like lower development costs and faster innovation.

3. Google and the Linux community which share the same ideology will be losing out due to increased competition and largely because the LiMo is still very unorganized, compared to symbian which has a dedicated developer pool working towards a concerted goal. It is still Even-Stevens for them.

4. The odd man out remains to be Microsoft and the Canadian based Research In Motion (RIM). They have for long been closed source and charging high amount of licensing fees. Microsoft's share of 15% is sure to decline. Because unlike earlier the price to develop and time to market mobile software and Os is going to come down drastically with the opening up of Symbian and presence of other open source players like Google and LiMo. These have already brought down the cost to almost nil. So obviously companies are going to stick with Nokia-Symbian which would provide a cheaper solution and support than MS or RIM. So Microsoft Corporation clearly stands out to lose and will have to come out quickly to maintain its declining market share.

Thus Nokia-Symbian symbiotic existence and opening up is not only going to help the developers world around to innovate further without worrying about the platform and licenses, improve the time to develop and finally help bring down the prices . This will ultimately bring down the price of the mobile phones and the ultimate winner will be the end user.

Today, in yet another sign that open networks are coming to the US wireless world, Nokia announced i

Today, in yet another sign that open networks are coming to the US wireless world, Nokia announced it will purchase the remaining stock it doesn't own in Symbian and then migrate the solution to an "Open" platform.

First question: why are they doing this? According to ABI Research vice president Stuart Carlaw: "There has been financial pressure on Nokia to move in this direction at some point. The sheer economics of the number of devices it ships with the OS versus the value it gets out of its historic shareholding clearly indicated that such a `rescue' was inevitable at some point."

The second question of course is: How open will the platform be? "Perhaps this is an admission that the pressure from the Linux industry is really forcing Nokia and Symbian to change their game," adds Carlaw. "Questions remain as to whether the solution will be truly open and what the cost of a Symbian Foundation membership will be."

ABI research director Kevin Burden believes Nokia may still maintain a proprietary operating system for high-end mobile devices. "It's very possible that Nokia will eventually position the Symbian platform for mid-tier devices with another platform powering its high-end devices - a position that Sony Ericsson has already taken," says Burden.

Om Malik has a good post on what it means. My bottom line is that there is clearly going to be a war to dominate the open wireless platform. And it's probably going to take a few years for all of this to settle out. In the meantime, innovation will flourish but not as much as if the industry had already decided upon a single open platform. Get ready for the next standards war featuring Android by Google, Symbian by the Symbian Foundation, Blackberry by RIMM, OS X by Apple, Windows Mobile by Microsoft and the LiMo by the LiMo Foundation. It's enough to make your head spin!!!

It was GREAT!!! The girls loved it and they had a blast. I also wanted you to know how awesome AJ was. We had him going on a photo safari and he was just so pleasant and a great guy. He was a major reason the evening was so wonderful. I hope the business blossoms.

I had a shitty day at work. Seriously. I was not in the fucking mood for anything. But, that was okay. I knew that at 3:45 PM my chariot would arrive to take me to the airport for a weekend of pure bliss.

Bliss, I found, is something to be earned.

As usual, I called Carmel Limo to take me to JFK airport. I always use Carmel. Generally, they’re pretty good. The driver I had today was awful. Carmel usually shows up annoyingly early. This guy was annoyingly late. Then, to avoid traffic, he lengthened the trip by taking me through Woodhaven and Jamaica, in Queens. It took forever. And, he was a shitty driver … by my standards, which are not high.

It’s all fine now. I’m on the balcony outside my absurdly beautiful and comfortable hotel room. But, the ride sucked.

"Jadi konsumen tidak perlu was-was lagi," kata Dwi.

Lalu kapan mulai beroperasi?

Pemerintah????
