Lecco, Italy

Dear reader. Yesterday was a day that made the whole trip wortwhile. I know this might sound lame and cliché, but it's true. If I had to drive through Europe with a Vespa, in a rain, just to experience yesterday again, I would. Oh wait, I just did that! :)

The train arrived to Feldkirch around 7.17am and we took a short bus-ride to the unloading platform and the bikes were unloaded well before 8.00am. It was a bit chilly morning, around 12°C, but the sun was shining and warming up the weather nicely. Before 10.00am the temperature was already well over 20°C.

Again I just drove through some borders without being asked a passport, had a coffee in Liechtenstein and continued driving through Switzerland.

[caption id="attachment_320" align="aligncenter" width="226" caption="Small castle. "][/caption]

From Switzerland to Italy the scenes were just amazing. The route I took provided absolutely the best landscapes of this journey. I had some trouble breathing sometimes and it wasn't because of the altitude, but because the scenes were just so flabbergasting. No picture can ever describe the beauty I saw, and of course I only took few pictures, most of the time I was driving.

I also met some old cousins of Vespa, who were driven by some nice Germans. They had been doing a 5 day trip with their older models. Nice, beautiful bikes and nice people. They also gave me the address of Vespa Café in Lecco, so I definitely have to visit there!

[caption id="attachment_327" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Cousins"][/caption]

Last 30 kilometers of my trip was mainly tunnel through the mountain. Quite uninteresting, but effective. I arrived to Lecco a little before 2.00pm. The weather here is perfect. Sun is shining and temperatures rise well above 30°C. It's time to spend few days here, have a holiday from driving - my Vespa also needs some service, there's about 5000km now in the tripmeter.

So, I will be spending few days in Italy, hopefully seeing some nice towns and villages of the beautiful lake Como. And also having a holiday with a friend of mine, Mari, who is having her holiday here in Lecco too.

Strange, as it might seem, the World Bank ranks nations, sometimes without giving their actual per capita income. No explanation is given by the World Bank, other than a footnote that says: 2007 data not available; ranking is approximate.' However, information gleaned from other sources bears out the World Bank ranking. So the nation with the highest per capita income in the world is Liechtenstein, a small country bordering Switzerland and Austria. Liechtenstein's per capita income is about $80,000 per annum. The principality has an industrialized economy, with banking and financial services being the mainstay. Tourism too is a major revenue earner for the nation. The personal income tax rates in Liechtenstein too are exceedingly low: basic income tax rate is 1.2 per cent on income up to 200,000 Swiss Francs, and maximum is 5 per cent on income over 2 million Swiss Francs a year.

Bermuda is tourist's delight, located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Bermuda's per capita income is almost 50 per cent more than that of the United States. The tiny island nation's per capita income stands at just above $78,000. It has the second highest PCI in the world. Bermuda is a major financial centre and is particularly attractive because of its low taxation rates. Financial services are the nation's largest industry, followed by tourism.

Norway

Norway's per capita income stands at $76,450, which is the third highest in the world. Norway has a mixed economy consisting of state-owned businesses and a robust free market. It's a high developed and industrialized state. Fishing, petroleum, hydel power, minerals contribute heavily to the nation's GDP.

Luxembourg's per capita income is at $75,880. That makes it the world's fourth highest PCI. Luxembourg is located in Europe and is bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany. The nation has highly developed industrial and financial sectors.

The per capita income of Qataris is $60,000, the fifth highest in the world. Qatar is an Arab emirate located in the Persian Gulf. The nation's economy mainly depends on its huge oil and natural gas reserves. There is no income tax in Qatar.

The Swiss enjoy a financially comfortable life, with a per capita income of $59,880. Switzerland ranks sixth in the World Bank's per capita income rankings. Switzerland, a truly capitalist economy, has many giant banks and multinational corporations. It also has highly developed industries in sectors like pharmaceuticals, chemicals, machine parts, electronics, precision instruments, banking, tourism, etc. Dairy farming too is an age old industry in Switzerland. It has very low tax rates.

Denmark's per capita income is at $54,910. According to World Bank rankings, it is the world's seventh highest PCI. Denmark has a highly industrialized economy, with robust agricultural and corporate sectors. Despite being one of the most competitive nations, the nation has a very weak financial regulatory system. Also, its labor laws are very lax and tilted heavily in favour of the employers.

At $54,100, the per capita income of Iceland is the world's eighth highest. It has the 11th highest PCI in the world. At number 9 is Channel Islands and in the 10th spot is Andorra. The Cayman Islands are situated in the Caribbean Sea. It is a major financial centre and also one of the world's best known tax havens. The nation's economic mainstays are tourism and financial services.

Attn: News desks

Attn: News desks

A federal investigation into the use of foreign bank accounts to hide assets and money from U.S. tax collectors might get a boost from an examination of photographs that were taken of the grandstands behind the 17th green at this year's TPC Players Championship at the Sawgrass course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Or, by checking the tail numbers on private jet aircraft that landed at nearby Jacksonville airport during the tournament weekend.

A staff report released last week by the Senate Subcommittee on Permanent Investigations reveals that UBS AG (the Union Bank of Switzerland), the golf tournament's sponsor, used sporting and cultural events in the U.S. to promote its business of selling private banking services that are tailored to evade U.S. disclosure and tax laws.

For years, UBS has sent a small army of bankers to rub shoulders with wealthy Americans. At least 20 UBS bankers, even though the bank has branch offices in all 50 states, made over 300 trips from Switzerland to the U.S. between 2003 and 2008. Their customs declaration forms, which all visitors to the U.S. must complete prior to entering the country, described the purpose of their visits as "non-business." But, an analysis of the dates and ports of entry showed the trips coincided with UBS-sponsored events, suggesting that the trips were, in fact, business related.

Credentials to enter the grandstands behind the 17th green, and the hospitality tent behind it, became a hot item at this year's TPC tournament when Sergio Garcia and Paul Gaydos were deadlocked after 72 holes of regulation play and headed to the 17th tee to start their playoff. Garcia won the tournament--and a $1.7 million prize, the winner's share of a $9.5 million purse which is golf's largest--when he sank a putt on the 17th green.

Whatever UBS paid to sponsor the tournament, it was chickenfeed compared to the business which the Swiss bank does with American customers who have parked billions of dollars into accounts that are carefully structured to avoid their disclosure to U.S. taxing authorities.

The subcommittee report focused on UBS and another tax haven bank, the LGT Bank in Liechtenstein which is co-owned by UBS and Liechtenstein's royal family.

U.S. tax authorities have fought a never-ending and never-winning battle against foreign bank secrecy laws for decades. There are 50 tax haven countries, some in places most Americans have never heard of such as Andorra and Vanuatu, but they "are engaged in economic warfare against the United States," Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), the subcommittee's chairman, said at a July 17 hearing.

"Each year," the staff report said, "the U.S. loses an estimated $100 billion in tax revenues due to offshore tax abuses. Offshore tax havens today hold trillions of dollars in assets provided by citizens of other countries, including the U.S."

Today, the U.S. government is on the brink of cashing in on its biggest break ever. Last February, a Liechtenstein bank employee delivered the names of 1,400 LGT Bank customers to U.S. and other tax authorities.

"The former employee who exposed LGT's dirty laundry had to go into hiding to avoid arrest by Liechtenstein which has listed him as its Number 1 target for arrest," Sen. Levin said.

Levin added: "A $10 million reward has been placed on his head...the subcommittee obtained about 12,000 pages of LGT documents related to U.S. clients from this former LGT employee. The documents and information he provided depict a bank that is a willing partner, and an aider and abettor, to clients trying to evade taxes, dodge creditors, or defy court orders. Internal LGT documents and other information show secrecy was a deeply embedded way of life at the bank."

In May, U.S. authorities broke open a second international banking scandal with the arrest of a former UBS banker while he was travelling on business in Florida. The banker, Bradley Birkenfeld, 43, pleaded guilty to defrauding the IRS by helping bank clients structure their accounts to avoid disclosure and taxation. It is believed to be the first time that the U.S. has criminally prosecuted a Swiss banker for helping a U.S. taxpayer evade payment of U.S. taxes.

The subcommittee report describes the lengths taken by the Swiss and Liechtenstein banks to attract new customers for their tax evasion services.

LGT Bank, the report said, advises customers to establish "transfer corporations" to disguise asset transfers to and from LGT accounts that might otherwise trigger a disclosure requirement. "It was also not unusual for LGT to assign its U.S. clients code words to confirm their respective identities," the report said. An LGT memorandum reveals that the bank used the Swiss bank secrecy law as a selling point (by pointing out that Liechtenstein's law was even more stringent), and that it used the Liechtenstein royal family to help secure new customers.

Although UBS has branch bank offices in all 50 states, the company used its Swiss banking staff to target U.S. citizens to open bank accounts in Switzerland. The subcommittee said the Swiss bank has approximately 20,000 American accounts.

If there are some politicians who don’t sell their loyalty, they do other things. Like stab their country in the back. Frankly I am disillusioned with the BJP too as it's clear that they are upset that it's not them who is getting a chance to push the deal through. So like a petulant child they are opposing it and national interest can go jump.

There is so much corruption amongst politicians that some of our MP's make petty money (Rs 30,000/- and above) from just raising questions in parliament and the BJP has such MP's too. You can find out their names here and also see their pictures. But parties still point fingers at one another...even though more fingers are pointing at them!

The fact is that India is number one when it comes to money in Swiss bank accounts and we have no way of knowing who doesn't have an account there. While people from all walks of life probably have accounts there, I am sure our politicians lead the pack. People who are there to make our country prosper are looting it!!

I came across this information (info sent to me by Priyank):

Swiss Banking Association report 2006 by Naman Sood

Deposits in Banks located in the territory of Switzerland by nationals of following countries
Top 5

India---- $1456 billion

Russia----- $470 billion

UK-------- $390 billion

Ukraine $100 billion

China------ $96 billion

As it says in the article:

India with $1456 billion or $1.4 trillion has more money in Swiss banks than rest of the world COMBINED.

There is another country called Liechtenstein (between Austria and Switzerland) which is also a tax haven. The German government managed to get a list of account holders at Liechtenstein’s LTG Bank and was/is willing to give the names to the Indian government but there hasn't been a response. The opposition parties aren't crying foul. You can guess why.

As for the live proceedings of the Nuclear Deal Debate in the Lok Sabha on television (just before the Trust vote) that reality show should have got an “A” certificate. If children see this how do you think they will behave in class…! But this time there was no violence…throwing of chairs and pushing and shoving, all of which I have seen on live TV in parliament. I guess we should be grateful.

Update: The UPA has won the trust vote with them getting 275 votes over 256 votes of the opposition.

California businessman Peter Lowy's name was on a list of secret account holders at LGT bank. Lowy's attorney says his client has done nothing wrong.

Also called to testify tomorrow are current and former officials of the giant Swiss bank UBS, including the head of the private wealth management Americas office, Martin Liechti, who was briefly detained by US authorities in Miami in May.
In court documents, federal prosecutors say UBS bankers helped set up many of the secret accounts in Liechtenstein and, overall, hid as much $20 billion belonging to US citizens.
"Sums are enormous and UBS appears to have been particularly aggressive in the way they marketed their activities in the US and elsewhere," said Christensen. "So UBS is extremely vulnerable to losing their license in the US."

The small country of Liechtenstein has several bank secrecy laws that encourages foreigners to open

The small country of Liechtenstein has several bank secrecy laws that encourages foreigners to open accounts and 'hide' their money. This time a bank teller spews information on some 'tax cheats' and has to avoid the Liechtenstein government for disobeying the law there. From ABC News:

Hundreds of super-rich American tax cheats have, in effect, turned themselves in to the IRS after a bank computer technician in the tiny European country of Liechtenstein came forward with the names of US citizens who had set up secret accounts there, according to Washington lawyers investigating the scheme.

The bank clerk, Heinrich Kieber, has been branded a thief by the government of Liechtenstein for violating the country's bank secrecy laws.

He is now in hiding but scheduled to testify to the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Thursday via a video statement from a secret location, according to Congressional investigators.

Why should we be angry that someone isn't paying a tax? We should be celebrating that and finding ways to avoid paying taxes ourselves. The government got along just fine without an income tax for over a hundred years, there is no excuse to force all people to pay one.

I've made this a recurring theme at the Inquirer in any post I make about taxes: the only fair tax is no tax.

We woke up this morning and, on our way out of Reutte, took a quick stop to take pictures of Neuschwanstein, another of Ludwig's castles... and is most well known as being the Cinderella castle from Walt Disney world (and at the beginning of every movie)!

After that we drove some more and stopped for lunch (with our groceries) in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein is known as the "Postage Stamp Country". That is for two reasons: 1- on the world map, it is hardly even the size of a postage stamp (it is a very small country), and 2- One of Liechtenstein's biggest markets is postage stamps! People love to send postcards from there because it is such a hard stamp to find for all of those stamp collectors out there. We didn't do any shopping here because we didn't have time, so we just ate our picnic lunch outside the city and kept on our way.

After Liechtenstein we were into our third country (really fourth if you count the quick stop into Germany for the pictures of Neuschwanstein), Switzerland. We drove to Luzern, Switzerland and had a moment to take a look at the Löwendenkmal and the Kapellebrücke (two well-known attractions in Luzern that also have a great historical significance). Then we had a bit of time for shopping, but Switzerland is very expensive. A McDonald's value meal costs $15.00!

Once we were finished in Luzern, we had a beautiful scene to watch out the bus window as we drove to Wilderswil... beautiful turquoise lakes surrounded by Alpine mountains.

Finally we made it to Wilderswil, where we took up residence for the next two nights at Hotel Schönbühl. This hotel is situated so beautifully... we woke up every morning to the three biggest mountains in Switzerland: The Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. This hotel also has a pool and we took advantage of it right away after these hot and muggy days. We ate another delicious supper and then almost everyone hopped into the swimming pool right away. Everyone played water volleyball and then did some chicken fighting... and then a gaggle of 13 and 14-year-old girls from Scotland (they were on a school trip) hopped in and everyone played along. It was a fun time... and very refreshing.

29 de junio de 2008

Fuente: Elaboración propia

Target: ICANN

Costs in Liechtenstein are among the highest in Europe. If you're on a tight budget and you stay in the one hostel (there's no kitchen, so you can't self-cater, but they do meals), you could get by on around Sfr60 (US$50) a day, especially if you already have a Swiss Pass to cover your bus travel. If you stay in pensions, enjoy eating out and want to sample the admittedly limited nightlife count on spending two to three times as much.

All major credit cards are accepted and there's an international ATM apiece in Vaduz and Malbun. Tipping is rarely necessary as hotels, restaurants and bars are required by law to include a 15% service charge. Even taxis normally have a service charge included. Forget about bargaining unless you go to someone's garage sale - it's just not done.

Bush denied travel visa

July 27, 2014

WASHINGTON -- Even with an intervention from President Barack Obama, former President George W. Bush just can't seem to get official permission to visit Europe.

"It was as though the minute his administration was over, nobody wanted to see his face," said one current White House official. "Just to be gracious, we tried to get him a vacation package in Liechtenstein. But even the Liechtenstein government said no."

The rebukes came in all shapes and sizes. A form letter from Poland stated that their "immigration quota had been filled." A personal phone call from an Italian tourism official was apologetic but firm in tone. "So many members of Parliament dislike him [Bush] that we cannot risk the stability of our government by allowing him to visit Naples," the tourism official said.

No government official was willing to speak on the record, but all had surprisingly similar answers to the questions posed. All cited issues of government stability, as well as popular revulsion, as reasons for their failure to approve a Bush family visit.

Representatives for the former president had no comment.

The opening fixture of Euro 2008 is not quite the blockbuster everyone would be hoping for by any me

The opening fixture of Euro 2008 is not quite the blockbuster everyone would be hoping for by any means, but it could well provide an intriguing clue as to how the tournament unfolds. Will we be in for a dramatic, thrilling Euro 2000, with a clash of the titans in the final being decided by a golden goal, or a slightly less thrilling but nonetheless dramatic Euro 2004 in which Greece managed to pull off one of the greatest upsets in European Championship history, entering as a bottom seed but going on to win the tournament?

If Switzerland manage a victory then this could be yet another tournament for the underdog, but the Czechs are hardly giants themselves and are missing the two players who are quite easily their most high profile. Legend Pavel Nedved has of course taken the eventual decision to retire from international football while Tomas Rosicky's never-ending battle with injury is ongoing.

They will require yet more work after the Championship when iconic target-man Jan Koller calls time on his international career, but he is sure to give his all in one last push to do his part to get his country its first ever major honour on the international stage. They of course reached the final in Euro 96 and the semi-final in Euro 2004 only to see success elude them - could Euro 2008 be their last chance?

They are without doubt perennial underdogs and relish such a position. They have always made their way by disposing of sides beneath them in the pecking order, where more star-studded sides tend to stumble. The real test for them will come in the knock-outs, but first and foremost they must maintain their usual prolificacy in the group stages.

Facing hosts is never an easy proposition - particularly in the opening game - and Switzerland are coming into the tournament off the back of a couple of convincing wins in warm-up matches. While it must be noted that Liechtenstein and Slovakia are hardly the stiffest of opposition, winning is a habit and if the Swiss army carry this momentum into their opening game they could spring a surprise on their visitors.

This modern incarnation of Switzerland is famous for having been eliminated from the 2006 World Cup without conceding a goal; their woeful penalty shootout against Ukraine proved their undoing after what had been an impressive if not all that entertaining qualification from the group stage. Philippe Senderos is almost like another player entirely for his country, but is no doubt helped by the defensive tactics employed by coach Jakob Kuhn. It is their unit that provides strength - with Inler no doubt set to be a star for them - but their problem may be outstanding individual play to create goals.

Valon Behrami may prove a key man in this respect. The outgoing Lazio star has already expressed his enthusiasm leading up to the tournament and will relish the attacking freedom he is allowed on the wing for his country, having been played as a full-back at club level.

Gelson Fernandes may also have a fair amount of responsibility to create, and having not enjoyed the most morale-boosting time at Manchester City in recent months, there is a chance he may be found wanting. The key to their attacks will be using the flanks to their full effect. Barnetta, Vonlanthen, Behrami, Degen, Lichtsteiner and Magnin are all able down the flanks as full-backs and wingers, and if they use wide areas to break and try and hit the Czechs where they are somewhat weaker, they may well grab the opening day victory the whole country will be hoping for.

TEAM NEWS

Switzerland

Despite having played 4-4-2 in their two recent victories, against tougher opposition the Swiss are likely to revert to 4-5-1, with Alexander Frei the lone striker and fellow front-man Streller withdrawn for attacking midfielder Hakan Yakin. Tranquillo Barnetta has overcome an ankle injury and will be fit to start, though Johan Vonlanthen's impressive performances during his lay-off may make competition for the left-wing slot fairly stiff. Veteran defender Patrick Müller has looked solid in the warm-up games despite recently suffering a cruciate ligament injury and should prevent Johan Djourou from lining up with Arsenal team-mate Philippe Senderos in defence.

Czech Republic

It is likely that the Czechs will not want to risk too much and will therefore start with a similar system to their hosts. Milan Baros will most likely drop to the bench and come on only if they are pressing for a result, with Sionko having earned his place following a brace against Scotland and Plašil also likely to start. Full-back Zdněk Pospěch has the flu and will be sitting out the game, with Juventus' Zdeněk Grygera a possible like-for-like replacement, though Ujfalusi could play at right-back allowing Radoslav Kovac to partner David Rozehnal in defence. With the possibilities continuing, Matejovsky's place may also be taken by a more creative player such as Jarolim.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Switzerland - Gökhan Inler: The 23-year-old will play a key role protecting the defence in a game where Switzerland, despite being the home nation, will be under some pressure for periods of the game. Has enjoyed a tremendous debut season with Udinese and is likely to carry that form through for his national side in this summer's tournament. For the Czechs, it will be a matter of working around Inler in order to ensure they can break through what is sure to be a packed defence.

Czech Republic - Jan Koller: The big man is likely to be up front on his own and surrounded by a sea of red shirts for long periods throughout the evening. He will have his work cut out, having to knock down several high balls and attempt to put his aerial prowess to good use when attempting to fashion chances on goal. He has just recently announced he will be retiring from international football after the tournament, and he will no doubt be keen to improve on what is already an incredible goal-scoring ratio for his country.

PREDICTION

Home support has been known to work its wonders in the past and there is nothing to suggest the same may not happen tomorrow evening. However, the form guide tells a story: the Czechs have been clinical in disposing of all inferior opposition while Switzerland have only managed results against the weakest of opposition. A home win would be quite an achievement - and one that definitely cannot be ruled out - but the Czechs should have enough at their disposal to make it a less than memorable opening day for the home support.

The short answer:
Perhaps not enough.
The long answer:
I am not a very gullible person. Just as I am

The short answer:

Perhaps not enough.

The long answer:

I am not a very gullible person. Just as I am substitious, I like to maintain an unhealthy skepticism about everything. To wit, I never believed in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny when I was a kid, I've never been rickrolled, and I've never believed in any of the other absurdities listed in Wikipedia under gullibility.

Therefore it's somewhat disturbing to me that when I'm asleep, I will believe basically anything. For some reason, night after night, every dream that I have seems perfectly normal when I'm in it, even though it never is. I could be working in an orphanage in Liechtenstein, and I never stop to think: "Wait a minute, I don't remember ever traveling to Liechtenstein. And why am I working here if I don't like kids? Also, since when do I have X-ray vision?"

Sometimes I try to find ways to figure out if I'm dreaming or not. I've found that a good clue is just to think about whether I'm dreaming or not. Sometimes I'll think to myself, "Well, it's possible that I'm asleep," and really that should be a good enough indication. After all, when I'm awake, I never think that there's any chance that I'm asleep, so if I ever think that I might be asleep, it must mean that I am. But apparently I am skeptical even when asleep, so I don't want to do anything crazy that I wouldn't do in real life, just in case I am awake. Instead, I just go back to defusing that bomb that I found in the laundry like I do every day.

That's the problem with dreams. They're usually pretty enjoyable, but they have a way of clouding your judgment that makes it hard to remember what's realistic and what isn't. Something can seem perfectly reasonable when you're lost in a dream, but then when you wake up, you can't believe how foolish you were. Unfortunately, this can also be true about the sorts of dreams that you have when you're awake.

As you may recall, I am not really a dreamer. I feel like most people dream about their future lives and loves, but I don't. Sometimes I think that having dreams is just a recipe for disappointment. Dreams are never easy to attain; that's why they're dreams. Most dreams must never become realized. And you know, it must feel terrible to be on your deathbed, never having fulfilled a lifelong dream. And even if you do fulfill your dream, what is there left to do afterwards? Die? That sounds awfully morbid, but it's either that or get a new dream that probably won't get fulfilled either.

But sometimes I think it's worth getting some dreams. When I was in college, I remember hearing a lot of statistics that went something like this:

"College freshman were polled on their long term goals. Of those who had very detailed career and life goals—‘I plan to be a successful urologist at Beth Israel Medical Center, have a boy and a girl, a loving wife with blonde hair, a summer home in the Hamptons, and an elephant-shaped paperweight in the upper right corner of my desk’—99.9% of them went on to fulfill them (and the one guy who didn’t was killed by a falling piano). Moreover, of the ones who did not have very well defined goals—‘Paperweight? What?’—all of them became that bum on the street who you always sidestep on your way out of CVS."

I'm paraphrasing, of course, and even though 28% of statistics are wrong, the point remains. Maybe, dreams give us direction but not distance, and sometimes direction is all that we need. Still, I wouldn't want to follow Gatsby's green light off the end of a dock, so some caution is still in order.

As much as I am confounded night after night by how irrationally I act, I wouldn't want to go a night without dreams—they practically make logs worth sawing. Perhaps this is the right attitude to take towards all dreams. Sure, they make us do things out of the ordinary, they may not end up helping us in our lives, and we shouldn't just blindly believe in them, but maybe they are just there to make life worth living, even without X-ray vision.

Cheers,
-qm

Keine Vetternwirtschaft in Kroatien, Nationaltrainer Slaven Bilić macht alles höchstpersönlich.

28 yaşındaki oyuncu,23. dakikada Peter Jehle'yi kafa vuruşu ile mağlup ederek Kubilay Türkyılmaz'ın 34 gollük rekorunu ortak olurken, Ludovic Magnin'in 31. dakikada geliştirdiği atakla gol rekorunu kırdı.

Çek Cumhuriyeti ile açılış mücadelesinde, sakatlığından dolayı Tranquillo Barnett'in oynamaması bekleniyor.
