While some of us have been salivating over the possible arrival of one of the two Davids (especially Euro 2008 hat-trick supa-star and Torres striker partner, David Villa), the reality of landing such a prospect is/was sketchy at best (because of our deadbeat owners who are so far in above their fucking heads and sorely lack any financial firepower). Going a step further to throw cold water all over this dream is Rafa, who's popped that Spanish balloon (unless it's a clever ruse... a ruse... a cunning attempt to decieve), but has confirmed his interest in another possible, and until now, rumored target -- Spurs' Robbie Keane.

Rafa on Villa and Keane:

I said the other day that he is one of the names we had on our list, but I can say at this moment that it is not an option for us. We know Villa is a very good player, we know the price and we know the players we have, so when you consider everything we decided he was one of the names, but at this moment, not our target.

Keane is one of the other names and okay we are still working with other names. We were in contact and we will see now.

Now, I like Robbie Keane. He's got plenty of talent, appears to be a decent human being, and has demonstrated his ability to do the business for various clubs. Yet, it would seem odd that Juande Ramos would be ready to jettison him so soon after arriving at the club. Granted, he's already scored the servcies of young Dos Santos and is linked to Luis Garcia (no, not that one -- the one from Espanyol), but the constant Berbatov-to-somewhere else (*cough*United*cough*) talk will likely mean that perception will eventually become reality. Keane isn't going to come all that much cheaper than Villa (maybe 6 mil less?), so where is the cash coming from?

I still say we hold out and spend that chunk of change on David Silva. Let one of the youngsters (Nemeth, Brower) fill the fourth spot in the striker rotation.

(UPDATE: Keeping with the young striker thread, Liverpool have announced the signing of 17-year old forward, Dutchman (or is that Dutchboy?) Vincent Lucas Weijl. He joins the Reserves from AZ Alkmaar.)

Ah, I absolutely adore alliteration.

Ah, I absolutely adore alliteration.

So, it looks as if the snowball that is Liverpool's summer transfer activity may be starting to pick up speed and mass now that it's gotten a decent push down the mountain. After the departure of the one-footed wonder, John Arne Riise, to Roma (he did serve Liverpool well... best of luck to you, JAR), Rafa has reinforced the backline by securing the singings of Phillip Degen (right fullback, via Borussia Dortmund on a free) and Andrea Dossena (left fullback, via Udinese for roughly £7M). By all accounts, both of them can get forward and can actually defend properly. My initial bet is that unless Fabio Aurielo can stay healthy, it'll be Dossena on the left and Arbeloa on the right.

While it seems Scott Carson continues to float in the vapors (despite rumors of a move to 'Boro) now that Martin O'Neill is now inexplicably considering making a move for Spurs' Paul Robinson (or more smartly, West Ham's Robert Green). While I have nothing but respect and admiration for O'Neill, I don't understand why he thinks he's going to find a better 'keeper than Scott. Surely, he can't forget how many games Carson kept them in this past season. Martin must be rubbing his nickels together. £10 million may seem steep, but it's money well-spent. I don't care how his form dipped after his England disaster, Scott Carson is the future number 1.

Keeping with the goalkeeper theme, Charles Itandje is currently being packaged and shipped off to Galatasaray for £2M while Brazilian Diego Cavalieri will be coming in from Palmeiras for £3 million. I would expect this revolving door to continue year-in and year-out as long as Pepe stays healthy.

I know it's shocking that I've gone three paragraphs without touching on THE transfer saga of the summer despite mentioning Villa and Martin O'Neill. The latest in the Gareth Barry soap opera seems to be that Rafa is trying to throw 32-year old Steve Finnan in the mix to sweeten the pot. Quite honestly, I like Barry, but £18M is pretty damn steep. For about five million more, we could have one of the Davids -- Silva or Villa (recently 'linked' to us for £25 million).

As an aside, Rafa on the idea of signing Villa:

But we will try to bring in another option. Villa is a player we know all about and he is on our list. But maybe it will be difficult.

While I realize that's a bit of a misnomer as we're talking apples and oranges when comparing the Davids and Barry, methinks the money might be better spent elsewhere. Granted, Barry is an England international, can play left back, left or central midfield, but if given the choice, I'd glady add to the Spanish contingent.

That said, expect this one to drag out a bit longer as Gareth is still banned from pre-season training at Villa.

Either way, we're going to need another striker as Crouchinho is partnering back up with old 'Arry over at Portsmouth, filling Rafa's coffers with roughly £10M. I like Crouchie, but since money seems to be at a premium as our bum owners can't cough up the proper cash, I'll gladly take the ten million pounds. Peter often got a raw deal from the press and some fans, but he did lead us in scoring in all competitions the season before last (or "B.T." -- Before Torres). Now, he wants/needs (Maslow can sort that one out) a regular starting place to secure his place in the England squad. I do think, though, that in the not-too-distant future, Crouchie will find out (much like Emile Heskey) that the peak of his international career will likely have conincided with his time in a Liverpool shirt. Best of luck to him, though.

Now, maybe Rafa doesn't need to bring in another striker... maybe he's already on the books. The Gaffa has thrown down the gauntlet to the youngsters, telling them to prove themselves worthy of earning a place in the first team. Obviously, we've seen Plessis and Insua already, but the one I've (and plenty others) have my eye on is Krisztian Nemeth, who's been ripping it up in Gary Ablett's reverse side. Can you imagine the day when Liverpool are actually bringing kids up from the youth ranks on a regular basis (with success) ?

Not shockingly, Rafa has brought in another youngster in highly-rated (for whatever that matters) striker Nikola Saric. The 17-year old Croatian-born Dane can apparently play up top or on either wing.

So, Xabi Alonso may or may not be off to Juventus. It seems the Italian cheaters club doesn't want to pay over-the-odds for the midfield maestro (somewhere around £16 million). Xabi isn't sweating it, though. He's more than happy to stay at Anfield. It was a rough season for Xabi last term, as he was injured for a lengthy spell, then struggled to find his true form once fit. I think to view him in a lesser light because of last season would be folly, but my thinking is that Rafa is only willing to sell him because the midfield anchor position is covered (Masch and Plessis) and the Spainard would fetch a significant fee that would go to fund further purchases (i.e. Gareth Barry). To let him leave for anything less than 15 million would be criminal.

Another rumored potential exit is Yossi Benayoun. But don't mention that to the Israeli international, because he's having none of it.

Benitez told me unequivocally that he brought me here, that I had a very good season, that he’s depending on me and that there’s no way I’ll leave Liverpool. I have very good chemistry with Benitez. He loves me. He bought me. I really enjoy being with him, moreover, I had an excellent season. I even surprised myself. Benitez didn't want to hear and isn’t prepared to hear about any possibility of letting me go at any price.

...And women all over the world shake their heads at his gullability.

Speaking of shaking one's head... Harry Kewell has signed for Galatasaray and Anthony Le Tallec is finally off the books, having fucked off to Le Mans.

Funny I should mention 'fucking off' as there's a nasty rumor from a nasty publication claiming that Rafa's former #2, Pako Ayesteran, is a candidate to become Fergie's new assistant at United.

12 Jul 2008, vs Tranmere Rovers (A)
16 Jul 2008, vs FC Lucerne (A)
19 Jul 2008, vs Wisla Krakow (A)
22 Jul 2008, vs Hertha Berlin (A)
30 Jul 2008, vs Villa Real (A)
02 Aug 2008, vs Glasgow Rangers (A)
05 Aug 2008, vs Valerenga (A)

Hmm, tinggal menghitung hari nih, melihat kesebelasan tercinta kembali berlaga ...

Walk on, walk on...

Bit of a sad day as one of my favourite footballers, Harry Kewell, has left LFC for Galatasaray. I fondly remember being in Liverpool and going into the city centre store 4 years ago to get his name put across the back of my new shirt. He had so much talent and trickery, it's a shame he never truly lived up to expectations during his time at the club but he did contribute some great memories, including two of my favourite ever goals, both of which I managed to see live and made me stand up and scream in absolute joy:

Dipikir-pikir, pengen yang mana ya?

Premier League ?

Carling Cup ?

Well one thing is for sure its wont be a financially secure one or at least not in the short term.

Tom Hicks and George Gillett are both leverage buy out specialists and both could see the opportunity to purchase Liverpool football club which was criminally under valued by David Moores for a cheap price and by building a new stadium and upgrading the marketing department make millions from the club for very little outlay.

The club was purchased with no debt was the claims by the owners and this is correct. When Tom Hicks and George Gillett bought Liverpool Football Club they borrowed the money from the bank to do so.

Now the owners had purchased the club they could exercise the plan of moving that debt onto the club via a refinance option.

The problem that they had not accounted for though was that in the take over agreement it was signed that all the board members had to agree to such actions of moving the debt onto the club and Rick Parry and David Moores did not agree to this and therefore only part of the debt was actually put onto Liverpool Football themselves whilst the rest of the debt was put onto Kop Holding, a company set up by George Gillett and Tom Hicks to purchase Liverpool FC in the first place.

Liverpool FC will have nearly £30 million a year to find in interest payments thanks to the owners which if you want to look at it is paying the equivalent of signing a player of the quality of David Villa each season.

This is a lot of money obviously but could be offset by the new stadium which both Hicks and Gillett know is the big money spinner at the club but although this week we heard rumblings of work starting nothing has yet to begin and at the moment it seems pure PR from the pair of them.

What neither Tom Hicks or George Gillett could have forseen was the collapse of the financial market in America which has resulted in an almost worldwide 'credit crunch'.

Its pretty safe to say that had this 'credit crunch' not happened then the current owners would have put more debt on the club to get the stadium built but at the moment they are just struggling on.

So what is the future for Gillett and Hicks?

Well George Gillett seemingly has realised that he is over his head and is wanting to sell his shares in the club and had it not been for the 'veto' that Tom Hicks has over George Gillett then he would have already sold Dubai Holding/DIC already.

There are rumours that there is no such veto but i can assure you there is otherwise you would not have seen Gillett for dust.

The veto however is not exactly worded how many people think but still exists and stops George Gillett from selling to Dubai Holding/DIC at this current time.

Tom Hicks knows that there is money to made from Liverpool and therefore he is hanging on as long as he can to his shares in the club and although he can make a profit by selling to Dubai Holding/DIC he would make more money if he were to buy the club 100% himself, get the stadium built and improve the marketing.

The problem for Tom Hicks is again the 'credit crunch' means that there is no way he can afford to buy Geroge Gillett's shares and also pay for the stadium whilst still trying to find money available for transfers.

If work does not start by September and that both owners can prove the money is there for the stadium then they will lose over £30 million in grants so is it any wonder we have had a recent fanfare of unity.

Another stumbling block for George Gillett and Tom Hicks is when it comes to refinace again next year as the financial crisis in America shows no signs of getting any better and certain media outlets are forecasting it to get worse so you would imagine the owners would struggle to get the new finance as nearly all the banks just are not lending that amount of money at the moment and certainly not to people like Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

So whats the conclusion to this post.

I fully expect in the immediate future for Liverpool to be owned by George Gillett and Tom Hicks and for them to continue bluffing and chancing there way through but long term i full expect the boardroom to have a more Arab look about it.

Pre-season starts today for Liverpool as the lads return back from their holidays (obviously Euro2008 lads will have longer).

What can we realistically hope for this season ?.

Well personally without get expectations up too high i can not see why a title challenge is not beyond us and like Rafa himself has said if we are in the mix near the end then there is nothing stopping us making a push.

Obviously new top quality players help but even if we were not to sign any players during the summer then i still think we can mount a challenge but the players have to raise their games.

When i look at our team we are extremely strong and only lack strength in the wide areas but even then the players we have there would be more then enough against the majority of the Premier League.

The spine of the team currently is as strong as any in Europe for me. Players such as Reina, Carragher, Agger, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard and Torres give us a superb platform to build on and that's seven players who should be playing week in week out next season.

When you then add to the spine players like Ryan Babel who hopefully thanks to having a season experience of the Premier League under his belt he will push on and instead of been classed as 'raw talent' he will start and become more consistent.

If Babel does find that next level in his development he will instantly make us more of a threat upfront.

We witnessed at the end of last season Rafa changing to a 4-2-3-1 formation and this allowed us to go on a very good unbeaten run and hopefully Rafa will continue this into next season and sign any new players around this formation.

We have already signed Degen an attacking full back who not many people have seen much of and the reports on him and our record on free transfers suggest he could be more Voronin then Babbel but as is always the case he will get complete support from me and hopefully he will prove to be a success.

Dossena is another player who will complete his transfer this week after the structure of the deal was sorted out and now he has returned from honeymoon i would expect to see him and Degen alongside Rafa at Melwood holding aloft Liverpool scarfs in the near future.

If there is one thing i hope Rafa has learned from last season it is not to over complicate things and stick with a settled side and a settled formation and allow the lads to go out there and win the games and not to be obsessed with avoiding defeat.

Hopefully this season we will have learnt the lesson of last season on how to kill games off as the draws we suffered cost us a title challenge last season and its important we learn to score the second goal in games we are vastly on top but seem to struggle to finish teams off in.

So start of a new season and hopefully the start of a very successful one.

Today was brilliant. It’s one of those days where you accomplish nothing you really set out to

Today was brilliant. It's one of those days where you accomplish nothing you really set out to accomplish, everything you planned goes wrong and as a result of this, you get to experience a bunch of other things you hadn't intended that are all actually quite fantastic.

Meant to head down to IFC Center for the Asian Film Festival, but unfortunately the film I wanted to see was sold out. Hastily made, cancelled, and remade plans with Vicarhelmet for something later that night. Picked up some Beard Papa and ended up walking through a fantastic street market on Bleecker Street - great for people watching. It spontaneously started pissing down which sent everyone scattering like mad. Made my way up to the Adidas store on Houston to pick up the new Liverpool kit before dropping into the LES to check out a few of those ever so trendy lifestyle shops and a slice at Rosario's.

At this point it turned into an absolute torrential downpour and with no uptown trains running in the vicinity I was sort of caught in no man's land. Had to run from scaffold to scaffold, ducking under awnings every step of the way so as not to be completely soaked through my t-shirt (no umbrella - never carry one). About this time I spotted a cozy little caff - Le French Diner. Walked in and there's French talk radio on, which the owner - apparently called Zucco - quickly shifts over to some tastefully trendy French radio station playing what I guess I'd call urban pop classics. Orchard Street was absolutely deserted and once I got settled in, it started properly gnashing it down outside. I can't remember the last time it stormed like that here. Zucco whipped up the biggest "grand mocha" I've ever seen and I had a relaxing afternoon, digging into the latest Wired, listening to the track Basement Jaxx sampled on Red Alert and watching the rain come down. One would have thought for a second they were in the 18th arrondissement...

Eventually made my way back to Broadway, a spot of - mercifully - stress free shopping in Soho as the rain must have scared off the tourists. Hit the R up to Union Square for a round of bargain hunting down the Strand. Picked up a great piece from the Taschen collection on East German design as well as a bit of a heftier read on the art and architecture of Basel and Zürich. There's something really quite inspiring about Swiss and German design but I feel I'm going to have to actually apply myself to create before I start to come off all Nathan Barley, swanning about town with no particular motivation or end product.

Eventually met up with Vicarhelmet for a nice stroll through Chelsea before heading up to hell Times Square for a quick run in to the Virgin Megastore. It all came back to France when I spotted Lamorisse's The Red Balloon digitally restored on DVD in the bargain racks. A total classic and having watched White Mane last week it's one of those things I'm quite happy to own.

Finally, walked up to Columbus Circle, grabbing dinner on the way and started thinking about Aqueduct Racetrack and how I've never seen horse racing and actually, might quite like to check it out. I appreciate how pretentious most of this must sound to the casual observer but there's something really quite satisfying about getting to a stage where you more accurately reflect your interests. There comes a point where I've been fortunate enough to actualise some ambitions. I hope I will be able to keep track of many more such actualisations in this journal in future.

F. TORRES vs D. KUYT ???

There is no comparison. Torres is the best striker in the world in my books, and Kuyt is the most hard-working striker in the world. Kuyt with a little more confidence, added with Babel's development, and Gerrard a.k.a. Captain Fantastic in support... Even without new signings, Liverpool will have the best strikeforce in the world!

In 2006, Liverpool launched a bid for Feyenoord's hitman Dirk Kuyt. Kuyt had a sensational 3 seasons with the Dutch outfit, banging in an average of 25 goals per season in his last 4 season's in the Dutch Eredevise! Dirk Kuyt was one of the top strikers in Europe and Liverpool managed to swipe him up on a fee of a round £10 million. It was a bargain at the time, and Kuyt came to Liverpool having to lead the line alongside the special figure of Peter Crouch. Kuyt has so far banged in 25 gaols in just over 100 appearances for the Reds.

I've to admit that Dirk Kuyt was the most exciting signing made by Liverpool since the arrival of Djibril Cisse from Auxerre for £14 million, who turned out a complete flop! Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Morientes also had short unconvincing spells for Liverpool. As a fan, we accept whatever we get on the table, that was until in 2007...

The Kop, would be stunned by the arrival of Fernando Torres for £24 million! Torres had been a prodigy child in Spain. Loved all around the country and playing at the country's most underperforming club, atletico Madrid. El Nino, spent 6 seasons at the club, averaging just about 12-15 goals per season. However, he was the club's most prized asset. He was on a £105k per week contract and was awarded the captain's armband while at the tender age of 19! He was also a phenomenon in Spain's Youth outfit, as well as stamping his mark alongside David Villa as Spain's most lethal partnership.

Torres arrived at Liverpool, for one reason, to develop as a player by playing under the master tactician Rafael Benitez. Torres even took a pay-cut to join, now he is on a £90k per week contract, what a sacrifice! We love him to our bare bones, hence 33 goals in 45 appearances on his first season! That is wicked! Pernando Torres has also pledged his future to the Reds, stating he wants to play out the remaining 6 years of his contract at Anfield.

* Próximo Miércoles 5 de Noviembre, Foro Sol
* Preventa Banamex 16 y 17 de Junio

Sección General A $1100

Sección General B $450

Sección Verde B $550

Sección Naranja A $400

As Per The Official Website (Liverpoolfc.TV)
Torres Interview With Spanish Journalist Balague about

As Per The Official Website (Liverpoolfc.TV)

Torres Interview With Spanish Journalist Balague about his debut season, and the summer ahead

Did you fulfill all of your objectives this season? The statistics are spectacular: you've broken Ruud Van Nistelrooy's record as the most prolific foreign player in a debut season with 24 league goals; you're the most prolific Liverpool striker since Robbie Fowler and you've scored in eight consecutive matches at Anfield. What's next?

I did all of that in a short space of time and I did meet some objectives: I was successful in not having a problem with adapting, because that had been worrying me. Liverpool paid a lot of money for me and, if you struggle to adapt, people start to get nervous and that's when the doubts start creeping in: I might even have started to doubt myself. However, as a collective, we didn't meet our objectives. I came here to win trophies. In any case, I have many years left on my contract, and I expect to win some silverware. I've gone through things I'd never experienced before, like playing in a Champions League semi final, and now that I've come within touching distance of glory, I want it all. I now know what it means to be a champion, and that has made me even hungrier for success.

If we had to find a fault, is it not true that almost all of your goals last season were scored at Anfield?

There always has to be room for improvement. Next season I hope to continue in the same vein at Anfield and to improve away from home. I've scored at other grounds in other competitions, but it's true that, in the Premier League, I've found it more difficult. I now have a target for next season.

You used to follow the Premier League on television, but playing in it is another thing altogether...

It's a different style of football. I came knowing what to expect, but on many occasions the intensity can still be overwhelming and take you by surprise. The Champions League games against Chelsea are an example of that: they are a team with a lot of committed, capable players who are physically and mentally very strong. I like to come up against these players because it makes me a better player. I've also discovered that defending is more complicated than in Spain, because even though you know how your opponent plays, it's difficult to stop them when the ball spends so much time in the air and there are so few tactics. This style of play cost us a lot of points and in the end we were unable to compete with the clubs at the top.

Rafa Benítez has already warned you that your second season is going to be trickier...

I agree that the second season is always the more difficult. People know all about me now, although I know more about my opponents as well, and I know how to take advantage of their weaknesses. But there's no doubt that I will have to account for the fact that I am better known from now on.

What's your best memory of the season?

The Champions League game against Chelsea is etched on my mind and while it's not the best memory, it's certainly the most striking: the passage of play around that wretched penalty and the third goal that settled the tie. A year's work undone by a couple of acts of bad luck.

There were question marks over your injury in that game...

I felt some discomfort and the coach decided to substitute me. The manager always wants what's best for the team. He spoke with me just before extra time and it is true that I was experiencing some discomfort.

You're being compared with some great players from Liverpool's past. Isn't it a bit soon for all that?

When things are going well, and people are happy with my work, you always get compared with the best. But for things to stay that way, you've got to keep working hard. If things don't turn out the same next season, you'll see how quickly all of that is forgotten. It's up to me to make sure that doesn't happen.

Euro 2008 has arrived, with all the hopes and fears of an entire country hooked on the tournament; does that create false expectations?

I don't believe they're false, but they are unnecessary. The favourites tag doesn't suit us: we're not. The favourite is a team like Italy that has just won the World Cup; or France, runners up at the World Cup and European Champions I don't know how many times. It's all the rage to say that we are going to win and it seems like we’ve already been labelled as having almost won it. They're counting on us, and they use these terms to generate hope, but at the end of the day, that gets confused with an obligation. Just imagine, if we reach the semi finals, we'll have bettered many generations of the national team: teams as famous, or even more so, than ourselves. We want to win and I believe that we have a chance, with some very useful players. This creates unnecessary expectations and if this tournament doesn't turn out well, it gives the impression that everything we've achieved has been for nothing. And it's not like that. We've been through some bad times, before reaching Austria, but we came through and, if things go badly, we'll come through again. But I can assure you, we do not need these false expectations.

I don't think I'm mistaken when I say that these kinds of expectations have hampered many of the players in the England team. Some of them have not even wanted to get picked for that very reason. I get the impression that this hasn't happened yet with the Spanish national side...

I can only speak for myself, not for the others. But nobody's going to take away that thrill. We haven't won anything for a very long time, and we want to go down in history. It's true that the European Championships haven't come at the best time for the players, nor did the qualifiers: shoehorned in to a packed fixture schedule; but everyone wants to play in a competition like this or in a World Cup. Sometimes, you might not fancy a friendly on the other side of the planet, but we all want to play for the national team and that's what you must go through. We know that to take part in the tournament this summer, it's necessary to play those other, less interesting, fixtures.

Would you be so bold as to predict who is going to be the player of the tournament?

I hope it will be someone from the Spanish side. I think it's going to be Cesc Fabregas. The rest of the world is going to find out that he is one of the best players in the world. In England, we already know that.

LFC 1 - 0 Man City

Spurs 0 - 2 LFC

In his very first season, Torres has broken the record for the best goal tally by a foreign player in his first season. He has been the striker that we have been waiting for since Fowler & Owen. He is totally in a class of his own.

Another bright spark is that our reserves won the reserve league. That is quite a feat considering that there was no senior players in the reserve team. Our future looks bright and i hope that we will have a conveyor belt of talent in the near future.

Anyway, the ownership debacle has not been resolved and it is worrying as the transfer window is opening soon. LFC can only have one owner and i hope that it won't be Hicks nor Gillett

Written by Rogers and Hammerstein for the 1945 Broadway musical 'Carousel', Gerry Marsden and his Pacemakers performed the song in Liverpool clubs during the birth of Merseybeat. "The audience would just stop, stand and listen. It had this immediate effect," says Marsden. Released in October 1963, YNWA was the Pacemakers' third consecutive number one and nowhere was it more popular than on the Kop, as fans sang along with the PA before matches. When it fell from the top spot, Kopites continued to sing it and YNWA has been played and sung at Anfield ever since.

I heard a Kopite calling :
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it's glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away..
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the redmen they are still playing the same way

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
