I’ve been nosey seeing what’s new in tech at GCPS (Goochland County Public Schools).

I've been nosey seeing what's new in tech at GCPS (Goochland County Public Schools). It seems that the teachers have a new blog system. I think it looks much better than what we had before. On some of the teacher's blogs, I see all kinds of new designs. As I look closely, I see WordPress on all of them. So, apparently all of the teachers at GCPS have a WordPress account. That's cool because, I have one too.

Another cool thing at GCPS is that all of the principals get an iPod Touch. I was shocked when I found they were getting them. I have an iPod touch too. Technology in our county is really booming. Too bad it's my last year here at GCPS. Maybe I should become a teacher, and work here forever :)

I also noticed several tutorials for Apple's new iMovie '08, which is a part of the iLife '08 suit. I believe that each of the teachers and students are going to upgrade to iLife '08. I find this good and bad, this is why:

The Good:

Has a lot of new features

iLife '06 was getting old for me

iDVD '08 has new themes

Magic GarageBand seems cool.

The Bad:

I don't know how to use it

Cost $79 to upgrade, I have $0

I have iLife '06, I'll wait until I get a new computer to get iLife '08 or '09 or whatever is out at that time

If teachers need my help, it will be harder, because I know very little about the software

iMovie '08 sucks, and is too simple to use

iMovie '06 is not compatible with iMovie '08

I can't confirm this rumor, but I don't think we are getting Mac OS 10.5 "Leopard" :( I'm not really sure about this. Certain teachers have Leopard. I love GCPS. We are the best!!!

Last night I purchased another USB hard drive to backup my MacBook. That brings my USB drive count up to five. This is a one touch maxtor 160gb drive. Why so many? Because I have been burnt too many times by not having my computer backed up or I'll experience a system or hard drive crash. Well not that many times but twice is one time too many. Plus it's good to have a cloned mini one touch drive to have around for those unexpected system crashes.

The process will be a nightly backup using an application called super durper, use another drive as a time machine backup. The other drives are used for file storage.

I'm just glad hard drive prices are so cheap now, because it looks like I'll be buying a 1TB drive soon to backup my backup drives.

adminertia : an admin at rest tends to stay at rest and an admin in motion tends to want to return t

adminertia : an admin at rest tends to stay at rest and an admin in motion tends to want to return to rest as soon as possible.

When Leopard was first released, I was almost grateful that it didn't work reliably with Active Directory since that flaw provided me with a valid excuse for not having an upgrade procedure ready to roll when upgrade requests started trickling in from my users. I knew that by the time Apple got around to releasing an update that made Leopard work well with AD, the number of requests would have increased significantly. I needed to have a method of handling them in a timely manner.

Walking around the building with an installer DVD or a FireWire drive in hand doesn't exactly rank as timely, nor does it rank as anything close to what I want to be doing with my time. NetBooting from a copy of the installer DVD is a slightly better option, but that would require applying a handful of OS and security updates after the initial install in order to bring each computer up-to-date. NetBooting with a NetRestore set created with Mike Bombich's (otherwise) excellent software is not an option because it can't upgrade a computer, only overwrite it.

Because I have chosen not to use Radmind in my environment, it seemed my options for creating a more or less automated upgrade to take Macs running 10.4.x directly to the latest version of Leopard were severely limited. After much despair, head scratching, and a little behind-the-scenes investigation, I discovered that Leopard's System Imaging Utility could be wrangled to accomplish my goal.

First, a word about Leopard's System Imaging Utility

I'll be completely honest. I have a love/hate relationship with this program. When I first started using it I found that it was the buggiest piece of crap non-beta software I had used in a very long time. It didn't allow me to save my workflows after I had carefully set them up, the resulting NetInstall sets would often simply not boot computers, and sometimes when they did boot computers they did not work as expected. The SIU and I have since come to an understanding. I've broken its spirit and now it does my bidding. (When I said "wrangled" above, I was not exaggerating.)

But you're not here to waste your time reading about the parallels between a piece of software and a wild horse. You want to know...

What you'll need to get this working

A 10.5 software license, or individual retail copy of Leopard, for each computer you are upgrading from Tiger to Leopard -- this is easily overlooked, so let's keep things legal

One Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard Install DVD (i.e. not shipped with a computer), or a DMG made from one

One build computer running Leopard with the latest version of Leopard's Server Admin Tools installed (10.5.3 as of this writing)

A computer running OS X Server providing NetBoot services -- either Tiger Server or Leopard Server will work

The latest Combo Updater (10.5.4 as of this writing)

A copy of the OSUpgrade.pkg found on the Install DVD at /System/Installation/Packages

That last item is your key to success.

Why the OSUpgrade.pkg is your savior

By design, when you create a custom NetInstall image versus creating a NetInstall image directly from the Install DVD, you lose the ability to upgrade an existing OS X installation. Since Apple has no way of knowing whether any packages you add will cause conflicts or even hose your existing install, this safeguard is understandable. Before we can understand why this package is our savior, we need to know what it does.

As Greg Neagle mentions in response to a comment I made on his blog, this is a payloadless package that runs a script called migrateNetInfo, which in turn calls a compiled binary called netInfoToDS, which does the real work. Since it's a binary file, there's no easy way to see exactly how netInfoToDS is doing what it's doing, but at least we know what it's doing, and that's the vitally important NetInfo to dslocal account migration.

Without this OSUpgrade package, your custom NetInstall image will simply install Leopard over top of Tiger with no migration of user accounts from Tiger's NetInfo db to Leopard's dslocal store. By explicitly adding the OSUpgrade.pkg back in, you can circumvent the safeguard and create a 10.5.4 upgrade image that will bring existing user accounts along for the ride.

Let's build our NetInstall Image

If you haven't yet made a DMG from the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard Install DVD, do it now. (I use Disk Utility to create a default compressed image.) Mount the disk image and then launch the System Imaging Utility found in /Applications/Server. The program will auto-detect the mounted disk image as a source and select the NetInstall Image build option.

Click Customize at the bottom of the window to bring up the workflow assembly interface.

The idea here is to drag and drop the components you want from the Library window to the workflow area. The Define Image Source item is added for you at the top. We're going to build the simplest possible custom upgrade image, so we'll add only two more items to our workflow.

First, select the Add Packages and Post-Install Scripts item and drag it over. Now go to the Finder and locate the Combo Updater and the OSUpgrade package. Drag each of them into list area of the Add Packages and Post-Install Scripts item. (The order probably doesn't matter, but I do it in the order I mentioned.)

Then, drag the Create Image item to the bottom of your workflow. Agree to the software license. (Remember the first item in the What you'll need section above?) Click the In drop down and select Other. Select your boot drive from the Devices list in the sidebar and click Open. (Why save it to the root of the boot drive? In the past, there was a bug in SIU that would prevent your image from saving correctly if you saved it too deeply in the drive's hierarchy. I haven't verified if it's been fixed yet, so play it safe and tell SIU to save the image to the root of your hard drive.)

In the Named field, give the image a name that is unique from any other NetBoot images you may have. The Volume Name is not critical, so put in whatever you like. Enter a Description if you wish, and then enter a unique Index number. Choose a number between 1-4095 if you have a single NetBoot server. Choose a number between 4096-65335 if you have more than one NetBoot server in a load-balanced configuration.

In the past, when I tried to save my workflow at this point, SIU would lose all the work I'd done so far. I'm happy to report that Apple fixed that bug in their 10.5.3 update to the Server Admin Tools, so if you're using at least that version, you should be able to click Save and successfully save your workflow.

To build the image, click Run. In a few moments, you'll be asked for your admin credentials, after which the build process will begin. If you want to track the progress, go to the View menu and select Show Log. This is a relatively quick build, so hang around unless you really need a coffee. (The image I built while writing this article took approximately 10 minutes on a Mac Pro dual 2.66.)

It's done! Now what?

Ok, so your NetInstall image was created successfully. All that's left to do now is to copy it to your server's (or servers') NetBootSPx share(s). (I have mine shared via AFP, but your environment may be different.) After you've transferred it, use Server Admin to enable the new NetBoot image. Assuming your network is set up in a NetBoot-friendly way -- I am so glad I get along well with our network team -- you should now be able to upgrade any Mac under your control from Tiger to Leopard by booting it with this NetInstall image.

Before you go jumping into the fire, though, you must...

Test it, test it, test it.

If you're reading this article, you probably have a recent Tiger image you can deploy to a Mac for testing purposes. One way or another, though, you should find a Mac running Tiger that you can use for your initial tests. Boot this computer with your new NetBoot image and go through the installtion process. You will want to proceed with all default options. Because we're playing out of bounds with this NetInstall image, the interface won't reflect the fact that this is an upgrade installation. You'll have to trust me the first time through. (This is the primary reason I've asked you to test it on something you can afford to mess up.)

After you’ve successfully run through one or two zero-impact tests and proven to yourself that this NetInstall image does what I said it could do, it’s time to find a volunteer. In my experience, given a large enough group, there’s always someone willing to risk the inconvenience of some downtime in order to have the opportunity to use the latest major revision of the OS. (Mac people can be strange that way.) Just be sure you have a recent backup of their data at hand before proceeding.

If you love something, set it free

Eventually, your confidence in this upgrade method may grow to the point that you might consider trusting some of your users to upgrade themselves. Come again, you ask? Am I telling me that this has the potential to be a completely touch-free procedure, allowing you to remain at rest at your desk?"

Imagine that.

I’m celebrating a nice event: after years of turning around, after 20 years spent on dos/win o

I'm celebrating a nice event: after years of turning around, after 20 years spent on dos/win operating systems and 10 on Linux, I've decided to deeply use OSX Leopard too! What an event!

This OS is so simple to use (maybe too much...I missed the hard SCIM configuration for input japanese in some distros...;-)) and it's generally fast. It's fast to boot, fast to shutdown and fast to open dedicated intel applications. The graphic is good and clear, there are a lot of colours, wonderful icons and nice widgets (but a full customization of Compiz-Fusion is SO superior;-)). The terminal is often useless, but eventually give you the power to manage some hardcore situations.

As an addicted Linux user one of my fears was about the lack of osx freeware software for my work but after some hours I found (near) everything I need without using Vmware software or Bootcamp. Here some examples:

Fugu is a nice ftp-sftp-ssh frontend which also includes a console.A must; I also discovered macports, an intersting way to use open-source X11 or Aqua based software and in the list I saw...Putty!My old friend, please follow me even in the Mac universe:-)

Ooooooh.....Microsoft did it??A native osx remote desktop client for connecting to windows machines??

Simpyburns does the hard job of burning cd/dvd for free. Very light and useful. For audio cd you can obiouvsly use ITunes, that works good even if it's a little "heavy" software.

Free office application. Neooffice is sincerely not fast as the last Open Office, but it's full of osx native stuffs since its born and for example I've no problem input japanese and other languages in this software.

More to comes....As graphic editor the right choice coud be Gimp for osx, that works good with after the X11 install as you can read in the help section of the community.

I have studied many philosophers and many cats. The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior - Hippolyt

I have studied many philosophers and many cats. The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior - Hippolyte Adolphe Taines

After many years of dedicated support to Microsoft and its operating system, Windows, I have finally decided that the time has come for a change. I remember starting on my first operating system, Dos, and the subsequent conversion over to Windows 95, then 98 and finally settling with XP. Well, after my Sony Vaio decided to give up the ghost, I decided to abandon the notebook along with XP operating system that came with the machine. With much reservation, I walked into the nearest Apple store and talked with one of the representatives about Apple's creative yet tritely named operating system, Leopard. (Just as an aside, how introverted masochistic does one really have to be to start nicknaming operating systems after cats? I personally do not trust cats, I can see it in their eyes, always scheming and plotting. Those cats will take over the world one day, but I digress). After a brief conversation with the representative, I was assured that switching to Apple's operating system would be painless if not beneficial to my sanity, if only switching would conclude the obligatory yells I at time launch at my notebook.

Apple was more than joyous to separate me from my hard earned money. Immediately seconds after placing the order, I was overcome with buyer's remorse. Can this notebook really be worth the $1500+ price tag I just paid? I was convinced at the store, but with a lighter wallet, I wasn't quite sure any longer. I would just have to wait for the notebook to arrive before I could be certain.

A few days later, the notebook arrive and my first impression was that this notebook appeared like any other notebooks I had owned in the past, but after powering the computer on and playing around with Leopard, my buyers remorse subsided. I could easily see that this was a well built operating system and its developers had its convenience, functionality and style in mind during development. Practically speaking, this notebook simply works. It does what I ask of it without the yells and it does it well. All my hardware were easily detected by the notebook without having me running around installing softwares and drivers. Everything just worked, including my printers, my camera and my usb drive. The only hassle I had was having to download Pocket Mac in order to sync my blackberry with the notebook, but it has flawless synced since the installation.

But alas, I am a practical man and I understand that Microsoft still control 90% of the operating system market and as such, most programs are still designed with Microsoft's OS in mind. This didn't present a problem in the new Intel Apple notebooks as the Intel chip allowed me to either run a copy Windows natively through boot-camp or as an emulation through Parallels or VMare Fusion. I did both. There are still many programs that I would prefer to run on the windows platform and now I at least have the choice to boot XP only when I require it.

Its now been about three (3) weeks since the notebook arrived and I've got to hand it to Apple, this operating system is well designed. I've seen found innovative software bundled with the notebook such as Front row and Spaces that I adore and even discovered numerous open source softwares I now have installed on my notebook. I still will never believe or accept that this notebook is worth its over inflated price tag, but I do agree with the necessity to make the operating system switch.

Don't fret though dear readers, I will do my best to stay away from the cultish fan boy culture that Apple user seem to have easily adopted. It would take more than a well designed operating system to get me to run around as a living advertisement for Apple.

Back in January 2008, a cryptic message from an imaginary source who was allegedly working for Apple

Back in January 2008, a cryptic message from an imaginary source who was allegedly working for Apple hinting at redesigned MacBook Pro. Although no time table was revealed, the information pointed out that the next iteration of MacBook Pro would benefit from the not yet released technology from Intel sometimes in 2008.

Then. I was hoping that the new MacBook Pro would sport the new technology and new design. The current MacBook Pro design borrows a lot from the 17-inch PowerBook G4. As a matter of fact. All current Apple's MacBook ad MacBook Pro has the somewhat "dated" look.

Rumors about the new MacBook Pro design hit the series of tubes a few week prior. Intel's announcement on their quad-core mobile processors fueled the speculations even more.

In addition to that, during Apple's earning conference call a new mystery product was mentioned. A product that competitors can match. A product that would be sold at a lower profit margin. Apple already has the product and it is ready for launch in several weeks if they chose to do so.

I for one hope that the Apple would release the newly redesigned MacBook Pro with quad-core processor at a lower price point.

In addition to that, Apple has been working on a new Mac model to fill in the gap in their product line. Somewhere in between the iMac and the Mac Pro.

Another completely unfounded rumor us that Apple is looking into partnerships with one or more major PC manufacturers for a Mac related product. Please take this one with a truck-load of salt. For now, it is a part of Apple branding strategy.

Sifting through the rumors, I am still waiting for the newly redesigned MacBook Pro to replace the original MacBook Pro Core Duo.

According to a completely imaginary source from Apple (no, it's not Phil Schiller), Apple is set to release update for Aperture in the near future. Based on the fake informations, the update will address some stability and compatibility issues.

Take that, Scott Bourne! (Last time I heard, he likes using Aperture.)
