Multiplexing is the process in which several channels are combined n such a manner that they can be transmitted through a single channel.

But what's Charlieplexing?

Charlieplexing has almost the same idea. But here it is for driving LED's from less number of pins .

So whats the use of this technique?

You can drive a large number of LED's from a less number of pins. You might be saying that it is possible using a multiplexer. The answer is not wrong. But it will be hard for a huge number of LED's.

See this example http://home.wanadoo.nl/electro1/avr/kitt.htm

See the explanation in Wikipedia

" Charlieplexing is an electronics technique developed by Charlie Allen (hence the name) at Maxim in which relatively few I/O pins on a microcontroller are used to drive a large number of LEDs.

With Charlieplexing, n drive pins can be used to drive n digits with n-1 segments each; in other words, n drive pins can be used to control n2-n LEDs. Traditional multiplexed display technique would take 2n drive pins to control n2 LEDs.

Charlieplexing works by having the I/O pins alternate between driving digits and driving segments."

In the April 2008 issue of LEDs Magazine (yes, I just discovered this article -- when did you catch it?), Noah Davis writes that "there are few good alternatives to the beam control provided by conventional lighting fixtures in the theatre." And then he proceeds to explain it all to us -- why it is the way it is, how conventional lighting works and doesn't work, and why LEDs will help save the world.

Davis notes that extending lamp life nearly indefinitely (conventional life: 300 - 1200 hours; LED life: 100,000+), eliminating the need for swapping gel in instruments, and lower lamp temperature are just a few of the "attractive" benefits of LED fixtures. However, Davis also notes that while there have been several LED instruments introduced for theatrical use, "none have the beam control that theatrical fixtures such as the Leko and Fresnel have."

But wait. According to Davis, the only LED fixture on the market that comes close to providing what a theatrical lighting designer needs is the Selador X7. The instrument from Selador "uses a seven-color system to achieve a wide spectrum of colors that include the pastel range," writes Davis. It is a strip light type instrument, and has seen competition since its introduction now that Altman is producing a similar unit called the Spectra Cyc.

But here is what I think is the key part of the article:

"The ideal LED-powered theatrical lighting fixture would not just save energy; it would save labor costs in several ways. Lamp life could be extended far beyond the hour rating of a standard theatre fixture, saving lamp replacement labor and the associated trouble shootinig time. If an LED fixture had a color-mixing method that could achieve the color range of gel, there would be no need for the labor expense of color changes. The heat generated by dozens of lighting fixtures would not compete strenuously with the air conditioning, therefore saving energy costs. Another cost-saving benefit of LED fixtures is the elimination of conventional dimmers. LED fixtures could have efficient on-board dimming that only requires line voltage and a control signal."

The LED is on its way.

With just two weeks to Doktor's debut I decided to do a full dress rehearsal. The sound isn't very good and the camera seems to have really picked out my own unprocessed voice despite the processed voice being a hell of a lot louder. Anyway, here's the test video!

I still need to find something to stop the hood sliding down and also the sling that carries the little laptop on my back slips off my shoulders so I need to do something about that too.

Performance notes are that I can't see very much in there. I have a spandex hood over my face which has no eye holes. This means that the lenses are completely black which is very cool but means that I can't see any details. Add to that some misting of the lenses and I can only really see enough to get around but I can't operate anything. Other than that, the costume isn't very hot, it's light. The laptop weighs very little and doesn't get in the way.

By now, plenty of us have read articles like the recent NY Time lengthy examination of the future of Light Emitting Diodes as low-consumption replacements for incandescent and fluorescent lighting. This article in particular, from last Monday's paper cites a number of indicators, from the famed New Year's Eve Ball in Times Square (pictured) to more pedestrian applications like factory and home lighting.

US fast food chain Chipotle has announced that it's currently installing all LED lighting in its new Minneapolis store, and a spokesman "expects LEDs to be in the overwhelming majority of new restaurants next year." In Detroit, a local bar uses LEDs and claims to light the entire place with the equivalent consumption of two incandescent bulbs (which they quote at "130kW" -- my physics is a little rusty, but I think "130W" might be more correct).

LEDs are enormously appealing to designers for lots of reasons: the aforementioned efficiency, of course, but also their amazing flexibility and longevity.

Fuseproject famously took advantage of the color control LEDs can offer in their Leaf Lamp for Herman Miller, allowing the user to adjust not only brightness but also the warmth of the light, to great effect. The minute points of light LEDs create also offer endless opportunities for clustering, distributing and shaping illumination, a fact that designers like Ingo Maurer have seized upon and run with.

The catch, of course, is price. Philips Lighting plans to introduce its first LED lightbulb replacements for home use this September in the Netherlands, at 69 Euros (US$107) a pop, while Sharp is making a similar move in Japan, with lighting systems ranging from US$420 to US$1856. This makes LEDs, at present, good for two things: high-demand applications where durability and low operating cost makes the investment worthwhile, and consumer lighting for those with deep, deep pockets.

There's a dilemma here for lighting designers: focus on an emerging, low-impact, low-consumption technology that offers candy-store-like creative opportunities, or focus on the technology that most of the world's consumers can actually afford? It's not often that "sustainable design" and "design for the other 90%" are so clearly in opposition, but this would appear to be the case, at least for the time being.

Resistor calculator for LEDs
SuperBrightLEDs.com

How is LED Brightness related to current?
led.linear1.org

So let’s review what’s typical: for 3mm and 5mm indicator-type LEDs, datasheets often list a typical forward current of 20mA. Forward voltage will depend on the junction material of the LED, but let’s use a white LED as an example. 3.3V would be a typical forward voltage at 20mA. So applying the series resistor calculator, we get a curent-limiting resistor value of 85 ohms (100 is the next largest standard value), and a power dissipation in the LED of (3.3V * 0.02A =) 66mW.

Very detailed info on LEDs - everything you ever wanted to know
Gizmology

Luminous flux = amount of light being put out

Brightness vs. viewing angle
Keep this in mind when buying LEDs for illuminating purposes - a 2000 mcd 30° LED puts out just as much light as am 8000 mcd LED with a 15° viewing angle. (The angle is half in both width and height, so the beam is four times as bright.) This is one of the reasons that ultra-bright LEDs are often "water clear", to keep the light going in one direction and not diffuse it all over the place.

Viel Spaß beim stöbern in Sachen LED.

Using a projector, a wii control and some infrared leds an image can be projected to a known surface, if that surface is moved the image projected will move following the surface.

Is easier if you see it, so we have posted here a small Mobile video where you can see how lenna moves around the wall following the surface. We hope to have new editions of this series soon.

I really want to start creating instruments like this. Nerd instruments, but awesome, nonetheless! This particular one is made from old video tapes + a tapehead from an old walkman and some other components I'm not so sure about. But I'm determined to find out how to make it and play it, and other awesome techno-instruments cuz they make such different, distinctive sounds that are fun to build too.

Speaking of building things, I found a web site call Instructables.com. It has tutorials and picture walkthroughs of seemingly everything you can imagine. Also, they have random projects that people have done on there and how to do them. I read how to build an LED-lit chess set the other day - these nerds and their LEDs - everything has LEDs.

Speaking of LEDs (and yes, I know that was the same transition - it's my favorite), I'm going to put some in my old mac. Let me explain. Last summer, I tried to make a Macquarium out of an old Mac+. You just gut the casing of all the components and screen and put a fish tank inside. This project stopped after we spent 3 hours constructing a tank out of plexiglass only for it to crack overnight. So maybe I'll reawaken this project, or I'll put a sculpture in there and here it is - put LEDs in the top to illuminate the sculpture. I just need a sculpture now.

You know that magical globe that brookstone sells, the one that displays messages and caller-id in a full 360 rotating text? Well how about being able to display 6 different video channels on that globe?

I can already think of two modes, one displays each channel static in its position, and another mode has them slowly rotating around the globe.

There is a bigger version of the brookstone sphere already available, but all those spheres use only one color of leds.. your turn to pump up the resolution and frame refresh rate ;-)
