You are invited to attend:

An evening with Bob Lovelace

Wed. Aug. 13, 2008 - 7:00 p.m.
Hart House, Debates Room, 2nd floor
7 Hart House Circle , University of Toronto
(direction by subway: go to St. George station, walk south, left on Harbord)

Meet Bob Lovelace, former Ardoch Algonquin First Nation chief and Queen's University lecturer, who was sentenced to six months in jail for saying 'no' to uranium mining on indigenous lands. Lovelace made this stand in defense of the Earth and Creation, which indigenous peoples regard as sacred.
Popular support for this cause contributed to the decision by 22 Ontario municipalities to vote against uranium mining and a promise by the Ontario government to revise antiquated legislation which currently gives mining companies 'free entry' to contested indigenous lands and private property. At stake is indigenous sovereignty, protection of the boreal forests from contamination by toxic mine tailings, and the right of indigenous communities to say no development which affects them.

Mr. Lovelace will share his reflections on the events of the last year, the meaning that the land has for indigenous peoples, and the challenges that attend to the current age of mass industrial development and destruction of the land.

Sponsored and promoted by GSU Social Justice Committee (U of T), Toronto MiningSupport Group/Students Against Climate Change, Sam Gindin Chair ( Ryerson University ), University of Toronto Students Union .

Communities from Australia, Papua New Guinea, Chile, and the U.S. will be speaking over the next mon

Communities from Australia, Papua New Guinea, Chile, and the U.S. will be speaking over the next month about their resistance to Toronto's Barrick Gold, the world's largest gold miner.

I had put up a previous post about this, but here is a bit more detail about the itinerary of the international aboriginal leaders. Also of interest are the Goldcorp events later in May in Toronto and Guatemala City. Many Canadian and American citizens are shareholders in Goldcorp Inc. The Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) has over $200,000,000 of investments in Goldcorp.

These events have already taken place:

Sunday, May 4th: Indigenous Voices Against Barrick. Our guest will make presentations, show short films, and answer questions about mining on thier land. Steelworkers Hall. 7-9pm. 25 Cecil. sponsored by Mining Watch Canada, ProtestBarrick.net, Mineral Policy Institute (AUS), Friends of the Earth (AUS) and Western Shoshone Defense Project (U.S.)

Tuesday, May 6th: Barrick shareholders meeting 10am, Rally to express your disapproval of Barrick's conduct abroad and join voices calling for mandatory regulation to hold Canadian Mining Companies accountable. 250 Front Ave.

Wednesday, May 7th: Film Screening and Speakers. 'Pascua Lama: a contemportary quest for El Dorado' with film-maker Prof. Carolina Loyola-Garcia, writer Asad Ismi, and Indigenous guests. 6pm Steelworkers hall. 25 Cecil. sponsored by Toronto the Better, and the U of T Anthropology dept.

This event is taking place later today:

Thursday, May 8th: Photo exhibit 'Someone Else's Treasure: Barrick's legacy in the Philippines, and Other Struggles Against Mining Expoitation' Photo exhibit by Allan Cedillo Lissner 8pm Leonardo Galleries. 133 Avenue Road ( just south of Davenport). Part of the 2008 CONTACT Photography Festival.

For more information see

http://protestbarrick.net

----------------------------------------------------------------

Also of interest is the Goldcorp event later in May ...

THE 'OTHER GOLDCORP SHAREHOLDERS' TO MEET IN TORONTO & GUATEMALA CITY

On May 20, Goldcorp Inc. (www.goldcorp.com) will hold its Annual Shareholder Meeting at 2:00pm: Le Royal Meridien, King Edward Hotel, Toronto, 37 King St. E, Toronto.

Building on our 'Investing in Conflict' speaking tour, and upon years of critical education and resistance work by groups in Central and North America, Rights Action - in conjunction with organizations and concerned citizens in Honduras, Guatemala and North America - is planning educational and activist events in Toronto and Guatemala, to coincide with Goldcorp's Annual Shareholder Meeting.

Goldcorp Inc. operates mines throughout the Americas, including the 'San Martin' open pit, cyanide leaching gold mine, that has caused a health and environmental crisis in the Siria Valley, Honduras, and the 'Marlin' gold and silver open pit mine that is contributing to health and environmental harms in numerous Mayan communities of San Marcos, Guatemala. Both mines operate without community consent; they are depleting and contaminating vital water sources; they are contributing to repression and to community tensions and breakdown.

Unbeknownst to them, many USA and Canadian citizens are shareholders in Goldcorp Inc.

Example: The CPP (Canadian Pension Plan) has over $200,000,000 of investments in Goldcorp. Many other North American investment firms and pension funds are invested in Goldcorp (as well as in other mining, resource extraction and military production industries).

IN TORONTO: Is your organization/ community interested in planning your educational activities in the days leading up to May 20th and/or coordinating events and activities with Rights Action? Are you interested in organizing a group of people to join a mid-day peaceful information picket at the Le Royal Meridien, King Edward Hotel on May 20th?

IN GUATEMALA: For more information about activities being planned in Guatemala City, contact: info@rightsaction.org.

Brantford land claims - the true history behind the headlines

What: An informative lecture and Q

Brantford land claims - the true history behind the headlines

What: An informative lecture and Q&A time with 30 year veteran of Six Nations land claims research Phil Monture and other leaned special guests.

When: Thursday, May 15, 2008, beginning at 7 pm.

Where: At the BCI Auditorium, Brant Ave. Brantford.

Why: Without the truth, it will be impossible to understand why Six Nations are blocking development in Brant/Brant County and elsewhere.

DID YOU KNOW:
Did you know that more than 50% of the present Six Nations land and resources disputes registered with Canada involve Brantford or Brant County?

Did you know there are dozens more yet to be filed?

Did you know that since 2002, the Supreme Court of Canada has ordered the federal and provincial governments of Canada as well as municipalities and developers to engage in meaningful consultation and accommodation with First Nations where contested land land claims or treaty rights are concerned?

Did you know that the Canadian Constitution Act of 1982 recognized and affirms Aboriginal Rights and Treaties?

Did you know that only 807 acres of Brantford is accounted for, and most of that has yet to be paid to the people of Six Nations?

Don't believe it? Come and hear the real truth behind the settlement of Brant County and the expansionism policies of today's City Hall.

Find out where is the Johnson Settlement is; Eagles Nest; Burtch Tract; Onondaga Township; Martin's Tract; Oxbow; Oneida Township; Grand River Navigation Co. Tow Path; the Nathan Gage Tract; the original Brantford Town Plot, and many more important areas of Brant County in need of settlement of
200 years of historic claims of ownership by the Crown, Canada, Ontario and Brantford.

Background:

TRUE is a growing Brantford based citizens group, seeking knowledge, justice and understanding of our responsibilities towards our Six Nations neighbours, according to the Two Row Wampum Treaty.

"The Truth is a hard thing that gets even harder with every year it is kept bound and gagged in a dark room, away from the eyes of decent people," says Marilyn Vegso and Jim Windle, co-founders of TRUE (Two Row Understanding through Education). "That is why we began this series of lectures designed to reveal the real truth and gain a Six Nations perspective on the historical relationship Brantford has had with its Six Nations neighbours over the past 200 years."

Previous TRUE lectures covered the two Row Wampum Treaty and it's significance today, and Kevin Annett's revelations of Residential School murders of thousands of Native children in Canada's Secret Holocaust.

"This movement is growing as more and more non-Native people begin to hear the truth and are as appalled as we were when we discovered the history we weren't taught in school," says Vegso. "It is incumbent upon us to acknowledge what our government has done and to make it right. That's our
responsibility under the Two-Row."

With all the talk and headlines about how Six Nations protection against the development of contested Six Nations' land, TRUE has cut to the chase and is hosting what could be one of the most important and informative meeting of their series to date.

Brantford land claims - the true history behind the headlines with 30 year Six Nations land claims researcher Phil Monture and present Six Nations lands and resources manager, lawyer, and researcher Lonny Bomberry, along with other recognized Six Nations' historians.

Monture has dedicated his entire life to finding the truth behind what has become Canada's most pressing domestic issue. The wanton theft of Indian lands and resources is creating a formula for disaster which can be avoided, if we have the courage to face the truth and do something about it.

This meeting is guaranteed to be a bitter and inconvenient pill to swallow for most, but until we are cured of our short sighted arrogance, addiction to tax dollars, and the destruction of irreplaceable farm lands, we are on a collision course with not only the original people protectors of the land, but with nature herself.

There are two important upcoming events in Toronto this week:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Event at Ryerson: Land Rights Not Mining Rights

2. CAIA Fundraiser in Support of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

LAND RIGHTS NOT MINING RIGHTS

FREE ROBERT LOVELACE AND THE KI 6

DATE: Wednesday April 9th, 6 pm

PLACE: Ryerson Student's Union, 55 Gould St (between Victoria and Church)

INFO: www.ryerson.ca/socialjustice

Featuring: Ovide Mercredi, former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, and members of the KI and Ardoch First Nations.

In a travesty of justice and a grave assault on Aboriginal rights, seven
Aboriginal leaders are in jail today for upholding indigenous and Canadian
law. In March, Robert Lovelace from Ardoch and Chief Donny Morris of the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) community, four councillors and one community member were jailed for six months for contempt of court. In two separate cases, they refused mining exploration on their traditional lands without their permission. Additionally, Robert Lovelace and his community have been hit with huge fines.

These Aboriginal leaders were not only protecting indigenous laws, they
were also protecting the Canadian constitution as interpreted by the
Supreme Court of Canada, which says that governments must consult with Aboriginal Nations before licensing mining exploration on their lands.

The KI Six arguments that the Ontario government has a constitutional
responsibility to consult with them before issuing a mining permit in
their traditional territories were rejected by the court. The judge in the Ardoch case threw out Robert Lovelace's testimony that he was defending Algonquin Law and responsibilities with respect to human activity in their territory.

"I'm prepared to go to jail for my belief in the land," said KI Chief Donny Morris. "This is a land issue based on our sovereignty and I'm prepared to give myself up if the court decides I've disrespected the November ruling to allow Platinex on our land..."

They should not have to go to jail! Premier Dalton McGuinty should withdraw the licenses issued to these mining companies and free Robert Lovelace and the KI 6. The jailing of these leaders is causing terrible suffering and fear in their communities. KI is a remote northern community that has just lost the majority of its leadership and the Ardoch community is facing fines of $50,000. These leaders are also in jail because their communities are poor and cannot afford fines.

"The message delivered through this court decision is one of domination
and oppression," said Chief Paula Sherman of the Ardoch decision.

Support the right of a community to say NO to mineral exploration and
mining projects that threaten the health of people and ecosystems. Replace the antiquated 'free entry' system of mining and exploration with a process that grants exploration permits only after consultation with affected First Nations communities, and consideration of competing land uses and values.

Join us to show support for the Ardoch and KI communities, to protest these harsh court decisions, and to demand action from Premier Dalton McGuinty.

Co-sponsors include:

To coincide with Palestine Political Prisoners Day, the Coalition Against
Israeli Apartheid ( CAIA), is organising a fundraiser in support of the struggle of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation (AAFN )against uranium mining on their land. All proceeds will go to the AAFN On February 15 2008, in a travesty of justice, AAFN Spokesperson Robert Lovelace was sentenced in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Kingston to 6 months incarceration and fines amounting to $25,000 for refusing to comply with an injunction that would prevent him from protesting against uranium mining on land that is part of a 25-year-old Algonquin land claim.. In addition, the community was fined $10,000 and Chief Paula Sherman $15,000. The AAFN and the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation started their blockade of the uranium exploration in the area in June 2007.

The highly politicized nature of these sentences further underscores the
on-going criminalization of indigenous people's basic rights to self-determination and the free use of their lands and resources. Just as
Israel refuses to fulfill its obligations under international law with respect to the basic rights of the Palestinian people (including the incarceration of over 10,000 Palestinian political prisoners), the Canadian government has decisively rejected its obligations under the 'UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples' and continues to incarcerate indigenous leaders who defend the basic rights of their peoples to self-determination. Such a right includes the right of indigenous peoples to: "freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development" (Article 3, UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples).

The Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid (CAIA) is a grassroots Palestine-solidarity organization which understands Israeli apartheid as one element of a system of global apartheid and therefore stands in solidarity with all oppressed groups around the world, in particular, the indigenous peoples of North America.

In the 19th century East Downtown Toronto was home to several poor houses and by the turn of the century the slums of Cabbagetown housed thousands of factory workers who were employed by rich industrialists.

East Downtown Toronto in the 1950's was home to Canada's largest skid row and during the 1990's the corner of Dundas and Sherbourne became the site of some of most militant anti-poverty demonstrations in Canada. Now Toronto's oldest working class neighbourhood is disappearing. How did this happen? How can we fight back?

Community Friends for Peace and Understanding with Six Nations, a grass-roots coalition of community and labour activists is hosting this meeting in order to create a place for trade union activists in southern Ontario to come together to build union support for the Six Nations reclamation. From the beginning of the reclamation, the trade union movement has issued statements of support and made financial donations.

However, this support needs to be sustained as well as extended into the rank-and-file of the union movement, as we at the grassroots work consistently to build bridges between the common values and interests of the trade union movement and those of indigenous peoples.

Members from the following unions will be present at the workshop: CAW 707, CAW 555, CAW 88, CUPE 3903, CUPE 3906, CUPE 1281, CUPE 4400, CUPE 5167, USWA 1005, and USWA 1998.

12:00pm - 2:00pm "INDIGENOUS SOVEREIGNTY AND HAUDENOSAUNEE RELATIONS WITH THE BRITISH CROWN AND THE CANADIAN STATE: THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND TO THE CONFLICT OVER THE 'DOUGLAS CREEK ESTATES'".

The purpose of this session is to provide people with the historical and political background to the struggle going on and to provide people with the tools to convince their fellow union members about the justness and righteousness of the Six Nations cause. Speakers include Hazel Hill from the reclamation site, Ruby Monture, and Rhonda Hill - mother of Six Nations political prisoner Christopher Hill. Other speakers TBA

2:30pm - 5:30pm "WHY (AND HOW) SHOULD TRADE UNIONS SUPPORT INDIGENOUS RIGHTS? HOW DO WE ORGANIZE WITHIN UNIONS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF INDIGENOUS ISSUES AND MOBILIZE THE RANK-AND-FILE TO GET ACTIVE IN SUPPORTING INDIGENOUS SOVEREIGNTY?"

Some people argue that trade unions exist for the purpose of defending their membership from their bosses and should only be limited to working around workplace issues. Other people argue that "an injury to one is an injury to all" and that trade unions are powerful vehicles for social justice and solidarity on a wide range of issues not limited to the workplace. This panel discussion will address the question of how trade unions have related to indigenous struggles in the past, how they do so today, and why the union movement can be an important ally for indigenous peoples across the country. The second part of this session will focus on the nuts and bolts issues of how we can work within the union movement to build support for indigenous sovereignty in general and concrete support for Six Nations in particular and address the kinds of problems and challenges we might face in doing this work.Speakers: Lindsay Hinshelwood, CAW 707; Tom Keefer, CUPE 3903; Joanne Webb, CUPE National Aboriginal Council, and others TBA from the Trade Union Movement.

FRENTE POPULAR FRANCISCO VILLA INVITES OCAP TO ITS APRIL CONVENTION

The Frente Popular Francisco Villa is a powerful and deeply rooted social movement in Mexico that traces it origins back to the grass roots challenge to the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and the bloody repression that was directed against it. They are at the forefront of fighting neoliberal restructuring and mobilize poor communities to resist.

Recently, they contacted us and invited us to send a couple of our members down to an important convention they are holding next month that takes place every four years and brings in delegates from across the Country and beyond.

To say the least, we are honoured that such a movement of resistance in an oppressed Country would have heard of our little skirmishes here in Toronto and would want us to come to their meeting. They are proposing that we develop joint campaigns and develop an ongoing working relationship that will include activist exchanges. It is a huge opportunity to develop international solidarity and learn so much.

OCAP's delegates will be housed and fed by the members of the FPFV but we have to come up with airfare costs that seem to be roughly $1,000. We consider making with link a priority but would greatly appreciate any and all assistance supporters might be able to give us.

If you can help us defray this cost, please send a cheque to:

The struggle of the Six Nations of the Grand River to reclaim the land called Kanonhstaton near the town of Caledonia, Ontario is coming up to the first anniversary of the re-occupation of the land by members of the Six Nations community. The dispute has had effects not only in the town of Caledonia and other parts of Canada, but also most notably in the Six Nations community itself. Overwhelmingly, the public and private media have focused on the economic and to a lesser extent the social impacts of the conflict in the community of Caledonia itself. Somewhat disturbing is the fact that media coverage has been much less, if not non-existent, on the impact on the Six Nations community.

Often the effects of these kinds of conflicts are revealed best through the eyes, the feelings, and the experiences of women. Women have played a prominent leadership role in the occupation of Kanonhstaton itself. The decision by governments to involve the Six Nations Confederacy in the negotiations after decades of suppressing their activities and denying their existence has highlighted the role of clan mothers as leaders in the Haudenosaunee governing system and their responsibility to care for Mother Earth. And whenever there is trauma in a community as has occurred during this dispute, this trauma is often felt most directly by women, whether as mothers of young children denied places in schools or sports teams, as community members faced by anger and violence that arises from frustration from the conflict, and as persons feeling such stress to the point of undermining their mental and physical health.

This forum will explore some of these issues with remarks being offered by selected women from the Six Nations Community and their experiences of the Land Reclamation Dispute.

Hamilton Solidarity with Six Nations To Hold Information Demonstration at McMaster
HAMILTON (ON)

Hamilton Solidarity with Six Nations To Hold Information Demonstration at McMaster

HAMILTON (ON) – March 21st, 2007 – A peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict near Caledonia can only be achieved if the federal government lives up to its obligations and negotiates in good faith with Six Nations. That’s the message a group called Hamilton Solidarity with Six Nations is hoping to spread at an information demonstration at McMaster University on Wednesday March 21st.

“The Federal Government can’t try to pass the buck by pretending that the Provincial or other levels of Government, or the Band Council, are responsible for negotiations.” says Dr. George Sorger, a spokesperson for the group. “We believe the authorized representatives of the Federal Government and the Six Nations Confederacy are the ones who will make the critical decisions and have to be at the negotiating table, because they are the ones who inherited the authority from those who made the treaties and agreements in the first place.”

The group is made up of a wide variety of people from the
Hamilton area: high-school teachers, trade unionists, community organizers, and university students and professors.

“Our group, along with a number of other solidarity groups in the region, want to send a clear message that this dispute isn’t about natives versus non-natives.” says Sorger. “We all have a stake in seeing this conflict and all land claims resolved and it is evident that the Federal government’s present approach isn’t leading to a timely solution that is acceptable to all parties.
The power to resolve this rests with them and as Canadians we should insist that our government act in good faith.”

This is the second Hamilton event where the group will be
asking the public to sign petitions and letters to the Prime
Minister to insist the federal government halt all development on lands in dispute and work to settle Six Nation’s claim with respect and integrity.

Free soup and coffee will be served.

“The response to our last information demonstration in
Downtown Hamilton on the 28th [of February] was incredible,” says Alyson McCready, a spokesperson for the group. “People are hungry for information and they’re angry the Federal government isn’t living up to its obligations.”

“We’re coming to McMaster because many of us live and work in and around McMaster and this and other land claim disputes really aren’t on the agenda in Canada’s education system.” McCready continues. “Canadians need to know more about what’s going on so we can hold our government to account.”

The information demonstration will take place from 11am-2pm in the courtyard between the Student Centre and the Library at McMaster.

Everyday across the city, immigrants, poor people, indigenous people and people of colour are confronted by the violence of the Toronto Police.

In our schools, near our workplaces and in our neighbourhoods, on our streets, we are met with racial profiling, random identification checks, beat downs and shake downs. People without status face the worst of it:
