Today I cycled to uni. Stupidest idea ever. Did you know, just before UWA, there is this HUGE eff-off hill that I will have to cycle up to get home? Did you know that I am like the most unfit person ever? Did you know I might just catch the bus home and leave my bike here until dad gets home and then I'll go pick it up with the car? Did you know I just ate a whole cakes worth of icing straight?

Bet you didn't know that!

Contract again, sitting next to Sally (who just had a freak out cos she was looking for her callus on the wrong hang) and Bronwyn who is definately fitter than I am.

We're discussing total failure consideration and how to recover monies paid/damages. Sally is so bored she's staring at my screen, yeah that's right. THAT'S HOW BORING THIS CLASS IS!

Luckily, I write the most exciting and thrilling blog on this entire planet, maybe even universe, that during the next hour of contract she will be entertained as she will be able to read this post. Yeah, you know it. :P I bet she agrees.

Apparently, if there is not TOTAL failure of consideration, (ie there is only a little failure of consideration), then there's no claim for damages for your side of the contract. Or something like that. I honestly don't understand this class and if anyone would care to enlighten me, that would be fabulous.

Honestly, what on earth does that mean? Does the lecturer realise that she is speaking at twice my fastest talking speed and she is the lecturer and not me? Does she realise that if she is speaking faster than me then there is no way in hell that anyone less than a superhero would be able to comprehend what she is rambling about?

Lecturer is now asking us a question I didn't hear, which means I can't answer it and whoever answers it correctly won't make any sense to me either. Should I pay attention? Well, maybe, but it doesn't make a difference - this lady truely makes no sense, even though I have copied down all her notes and everything she writes and all major points she mentions. SLOW DOWN CRAZY LECTURER LADY!

Man this post is below par, sorry little choo choos (my followers), I hope I haven't let you down too much!

I shall now return my focus to the crazy lady at the front of the lecture theatre - hopefully I'll learn something.

Farewell my little choo choos!

p.s. Sally & I hae numbuts. We're numbats. Haha. What a pun. Poor effort.

The career, at the moment, is where it gets complicated. Well, more complicated. I came back from ab

The career, at the moment, is where it gets complicated. Well, more complicated. I came back from abroad with the hopes of starting a masters in September. I was accepted on an MA at the University of Manchester and applied for funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council - without it, I had no chance of paying for the course. Out of 30 applications forwarded to the AHRC by the University of Manchester, mine was rated top by the relevant University staff. Of course, when the letter came through a couple of weeks ago, I hadn't got the funding.

There are two basic choices - do the masters part time over the course of two years (working three or four days a week in a job, fitting the studies round that) or defer for a year and work full-time until September 2009.

Both options have pros and cons:

Part time starting 2008 - PROs

My skills don't get rusty - languages have a habit of doing that really quickly

I have the certainty of a career path

I can get started now without having to postpone my 'real life' for another year and f!ck about in a McTemping job

My motivation doesn't have the chance to wane

Part time starting 2008 - CONs

It's going to be bl**dy hard finding a decent part-time job that I can stick with for two years

Part-time jobs around here are generally less well-paid than full-time jobs

I might end up stretching myself too thinly

I've been ill over the summer, so if I crash and burn, it's not just studies, but work and thus money that go down the pan

Defer for a year - PROs

I have the chance to find a well paid full-time job for a year and save, save, save!

It gives me a chance to look at other career options (see below)

I can re-apply for funding

I can look at applying for a PhD as opposed to a masters and gain back my 'lost' year

Defer for a year - CONs

It leaves me in the same uncertain state that I'm currently in, and which is currently pecking my head

I still have to do extensive work and reading to make sure I don't get rusty and fall behind in the field

I'm gutted at getting so close to starting the course and then having to take a step back

I'm so torn - I need to earn enough money to fund myself for the next two years, no matter what happens, and it's proving hard and tempting me to look at other career options. As it is, my masters would lead me down a purely academic route - masters, PhD, post-doc... Fulfilling as this would be (and believe me, I think it would), it would leave me flat broke for the forseeable future. I specialise in German and the rate at which undergraduates are applying for German courses is plummeting. 610 people in the UK this year are starting German undergraduate degrees. 610!!

Having said that, once you're through the masters, there's usually a good level of funding available to PhD students, simply because there aren't so many of them. So I'd be almost (the words of my appointed supervisor) guaranteed funding for that. Hmm, famous last words?

The other option would be taking law and working towards being a barrister. This is a fairly new idea, but one that's been met with enthusiasm by people who know me. I'm not entirely unexcited by the idea either - it just frightens me to start again in an entirely new discipline. Although it would lead me down a professional route and not an academic one (this being a negative thing, for someone who has had her heart set on a career in academia), it would provide a good salary and allow me to do other things with my time. Holidays, photography, actually being able to give people gifts, eating out... All this vs. academic fulfillment. It's a hard toss.

I haven't told so many people about not getting the funding, actually. I'm completely ashamed, although I've been assured it's nonsensical, arbitrary marking. As I said, my application was rated the best of the thirty submitted by the language department at Manchester, and yet my application was rated '4' by the AHRC. There are six categories, '1' being the bestest ever application they've seen, like ever, '6' being an atrocious piece of waffle that they could barely read without vomiting. I got a 4.

I have to decide soon, what to do. Registration is next month, and with it, around five hundred pounds in tuition fees. My dad has offered to help me with the majority of the fees, if I want to do the course part-time over the next two years, but I don't know if i can live with that - he's flat broke too.

This whole thing is what I wake up thinking about at night. And I just gave you the simplified version!

Im so tired when i got back from school, cuz recently i have an assignment from teacher that my group have to compose a song out of a poem .

Difficult No ?

I have been brainstorming ever since .

My English Trainee teacher gave the class a selection to choose a few diffrent ways to present the poem in , which is

1) Blog

2) Cartoon Strips

3) Role-play

4) Letter Writing

5) Compose a song

Letter writing was already chosen , and so is Role-play

So choice No. 1 - 2 -5 is out for grabs. But Choice No.1

No one wants to choose Cartoon Strips is because No one in the class can draw well except Me , Fazira and Brendon .

Fazira is down with a Fever and we can't just create a Comic/ Cartoon Strip in one day .. Brilliant .. = = "

No one wanted to do Compose a song so everyone is rushing to take Choice No.1 and there are 3 groups after it ( Mine , Brendon and Godzilla/Bitches Group )

Dramatic is it not ?

Brendon's group have chosen Blog , so that leaves mine and godzilla .

At first my Group wanted to do Blogging but then , Wouldn't it be a walk in the park (to me its just kindergarten stage ) ? Besides .. there are alot of competitor , so marks will be a little difficult to obtain it in the highest form if the other group is better and yours suck .. they might completely over shadow you .

So my group has chosen to Compose a Song , which is the hardest among all ,

But of course im not so stupid to just pick that cuz i have my reasons , and one of them is that .. My english teacher's lecturer will be coming , so i might want to do something diffrent to impress her , And .. if this plan is carried out smoothly , the ticket is there to get full "formatif" marks or at least a decent score .

this will be interesting ..

Besides , it would be an Honor To watch Godzilla (s) present the blog ,using their so called " Bombastic" English that they are much famous at , especially coming out from the mouths of people who have terrible sense of clours (LALAs) .. i let them have the bate , knowing that they are too cheap to do anything and i pity them for having such low marks .. so why not ?

i couldn't care less,

So , Tomorrow i will be bringing my coffin guitar to school .. so wish me luck !

i will keep you readers out there informed as soon as i get a chance to blog ,

till then ,

Mr Smith says the most common mistakes should be accepted as "variant spellings" and include words such as "arguement" for "argument" and "twelth" for "twelfth".

He lists the 10 most commonly misspelt words, which include "arguement" for "argument" and "twelth" for "twelfth".

Mr Smith, a criminology lecturer, says his statements in the “Times Higher Education Supplement”, follows years of correcting the same mistakes.

"Instead of complaining about the state of the education system as we correct the same mistakes year after year, I've got a better idea. University teachers should simply accept as variant spellings those words our students most commonly misspell”.

"The spelling of the word 'judgement', for example, is now widely accepted as a variant of 'judgment', so why can't 'truely' be accepted as a variant spelling of 'truly'?"

Mr Smith also suggested adding the word "misspelt" to the list and all those that break the "i before e" rule - weird, seize, neighbour and foreign.

He goes on saying that he is not asking people to learn to spell words differently but rather: "All I am suggesting is that we might well put 20 or so of the most commonly misspelt words in the English language on the same footing as those other words that have a widely accepted variant spelling".

Before Barack Obama decided to run for President, he spent twelve years as a highly popular lecturer at the University of Chicago law school. The New York Times has a fascinating account of Obama's time there. (A free registration might be required to view the linked article)

Prof. Barnett, writing at the conservative-libertarian blog The Volokh Conspiracy says that the materials show that "[Obama] is a smart guy, and an exceptionally fair-minded teacher" but "they tell us little about his core beliefs on the very sensitive issues covered by these courses." Considering these materials are taken from courses he taught to students, I think that is a good thing.

We are saddened to report that Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist whose last lecture [See EA 10/01/07], titled "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," became a viral video on YouTube, died yesterday at the age of 47 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Doctors told Pausch last August that his cancer, which was in remission, had recurred and that he would live only three to six months longer.

A month after hearing the dreadful news, on September 18, 2007, Pausch delivered the lecture that would become his legacy. He regaled students and colleagues with a tour that was both heart-wrenching and amusing of his attempts to live out his childhood fantasies. Some he managed to pull off: experiencing zero-gravity, helping to design attractions for Disney World by participating in its Imagineering program and writing an entry in the World Book encyclopedia--on virtual reality, his expertise. Others didn't come true, such as becoming a pro football player. He alluded to teaching as a way of helping students live out their dreams.

The video of his last class, which came to be known as "The Last Lecture" and surfaced on YouTube late-last year, has been viewed nearly 3.5 million times. The lecture became a best-selling book with the same title.

"I'd like to thank the millions of people who have offered their love, prayers and support," Pausch's wife, Jai, said after his death. "Randy was so happy and proud that the lecture and book inspired parents to revisit their priorities, particularly their relationships with their children. The outpouring of cards and emails really sustained him."

But Pausch told his students that it was his children – Dylan, 6, Logan, 3, and Chloe, 2 – for whom the speech was really intended.

"I knew what I was doing that day," he wrote in the introduction to his book. "Under the ruse of giving an academic lecture, I was trying to put myself in a bottle that would one day wash up on the beach for my children."

Aside from his Internet fame, Pausch is best known as the creator of Alice, a program that allows children to create 3-D animations. Carnegie Mellon's president Jared Cohon said of Pausch, to CNN: "His love of teaching, his sense of fun and his brilliance came together in the Alice project, which teaches students computer programming while enabling them to do something fun -- making animated movies and games." IBM fellow Grady Booch praised Alice for the ease with which it teachers young people computer programming in an interview last month with our technology editor, Larry Greenemeier.

Pausch also cofounded Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center, which according to its website, brings together technology specialists and artists to "produce artifacts that are intended to entertain, inform, inspire, or otherwise affect an audience/guest/player/participant."

I regret to report that Professor Randy Pausch who gave the famous "Last Lecture" has lost his battle to cancer.

For those of you who are not familiar with Randy, he was a Carnegie Mellon computer-sciences professor who, in September 2007, gave a lecture entitled "Achieving Your Childhood Dreams". This lecture was part of the "Last Lecture" series in which professors imagine they're giving their final lecture before dying. However unlike all the others professors before him, he was the first to give the speech after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. He was dying of pancreatic cancer.

Despite the potential for the lecture to be morbid and preachy, it was just the opposite. He tricked the audience into learning an invaluable lesson by entertaining them with his real life experiences, contagious smile and sense of humor.

Live your life the "right" way and karma will take care of the rest.

Maybe it isn't "karma" for you... maybe you believe in something else... BUT the point doesn't change.

Anyway, his lecture was amazing as was his message and I can honestly say that his words have changed me - dramatically. And I recommend that everybody watch his lecture or read his book. You, too, will be a better person for it.

damn, i almost couldn't wake up in time for 8am lecture. and it bloody rained rhinos and elephants this morning! i've NEVER like rain. tsk. luckily the bus came in time though, otherwise i'll be late.

and then... ( okay, no photos today! i'm not in the mood :( )

halfway through lessons went to find Mike G. ohboy! he's my favourite lecturer actually. why? its fun to "play/communicate" with him! well, we went to his room and he offered us "mothballs" (pretty tasty actually, but a tad too sweet) oh and he still say other weird funny stuff. lols.

after lessons went to "No Sugar Added" for a event/talk on love. lols. well, invited by miss pau. okay, it was pretty fun i guess? and left later on at 5.15pm for tennis. why? cause i have a hunch SYOW might be there.

and BINGO! :D it makes me happy to see SYOW in fact. and somehow i can sense something? hah.

ohwell, later on tennis. and kana trashed by the guys doubles luh. i'm really impressed with Lionel's tennis skill! he can volley and do the overhead smash so super well! WOW. i think there's high hopes for nyp guys team. well, the positions are more or less settled and i'm so nervous about this coming friday!

and tell you what, i fall today. yes, on the court. right in front of 22 pairs of eyeballs. OMG x438129054752451098451!!! how embarrassing since there's no such thing as a "graceful fall", haha. and thanks for all the concern, really. (you know who you are!) now, i'm having such a horrible abrasion (w/ bleeding, but it stopped already) sigh. the last time i had such a bad abrasion was when i was in primary 5. when i first started roller blading :( anyway, it sucked to fall. ARHHHHHHHHH!!!!

so with all the good and bad things, what sort of day is it today?!

Finally, there’s a new lecturer for my Hospitality Management module today. Her name is Meliss

Finally, there's a new lecturer for my Hospitality Management module today. Her name is Melissa and she's so much experienced in teaching this module. Thankfully, she is tons much more better than the previous Dr. Sein. He should go back home and rear chickens instead of teaching.

Well, Melissa is such a very nice lecturer. Having a lecturer who knows everything and anything about this module and teach without following the textbook. With her precious 10 years plus of experience, she is always very excited and eager to share her knowledge with us. Her lectures never fail to interest me and she's such a warm and pleasent lecturer. The school should have more of such type of lecturers.

After school today, I went down to Raffles City to shop around since it's still the Great Singapore Sale. As I got on the MRT, this song started to play on the radio... "Pure Shores" by All Saints from the year 2000. I looked out of the train and saw the sun shining so brightly up there but suddenly, there's a tinkle of sadness in me. The feeling of sunshine shining brightly on me makes me wanna melt in tears. Maybe it's too hot?

There's this guy neatly dressed in shirt, tie and pants boarded the MRT at Outram and he was standing beside me. I was surprised when he spoke to me. His name is Gerald and he told me he's a newbie doctor.

We spoke for quite a while and conversation started like this:

Gerald: Hey, what's wrong?

Me: (quite stunned)

Gerald: You don't seem alright. Are you ok?

Me: Err.. Yup...

Gerald: Are you feeling sad?

Me: Nope, i'm not. (smiles)

Gerald: (smiles back) Your eyes and your expression seems very sad just now.

Me: Haha... serious?

Gerald: Yup, you look more cute when you smile.

Me: Oh thanks...

We spoke for a while more and I alighted at City Hall MRT. It's so nice of a concern doctor to chat with me. So many pleasent people I met today. Still, I feel kinda weird today as so many people were giving me a funny type of look. Wonder what's wrong...

The fact that hip-hop music has changed the face of American and world wide culture has for many years been common knowledge. However, in the beginning stages of hip-hop culture, the messages and themes in the music were far different than what is dominating the marketplace today. What was it that shifted this powerfully influential art form from one of empowerment through story telling, to one of blatant self-degradation and misogyny?

In this powerful and controversial lecture on the current state of hip-hop, Essential MC will deeply explore the overt and hidden messages in popular hip-hop music of the day. Where does the responsibility lie? Is it in the hands of record company conglomerates, music video outlets and radio stations, the artists, and/or the actual fans? This presentation will enlighten future leaders to make more conscientious decisions as to the sound vibrations that they allow themselves to be so heavily inundated with.
